Interview with an Akron Vampire

I remember watching her sing and perform in various musicals and performances at Firestone High School and thinking she was one of the rare few who would actually make something of herself in the performing arts some day. So cool to see she actually is!

Firestone graduate takes a bite out of Hollywood.

Lisa Howard may not be a household name yet, but in the West Akron area, she’s the talk of the town.

The 1993 Firestone High School graduate has snagged a role in the upcoming film, “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2” — the epic finale of the Twilight saga — which opens in theaters Nov. 16. Howard’s character, Siobhan, is the leader of the Irish Coven of vampires, one of the groups called upon to help protect the half-human, half-vampire child of the saga’s leads, Edward and Bella Cullen.

“My character Siobhan has a quiet but strong presence. She can will a situation to go the way she wants it to,” she says. “She is beautiful yet fierce and is willing to fight if she has to.”

This is Howard’s first foray on the big screen, but she’s no stranger to the spotlight.

In high school, she performed in numerous choirs and on-stage in musical theater productions. After graduation, she studied music at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.

My mom, Susan Loughry, and I traveled to London in September to see my sister, Jen French, a Revere High School graduate, compete in the Paralympic Games. She won a silver medal in sailing in the two-person keelboat (SKUD 18) class.

Jen and her SKUD 18 teammate, J.P. Creignou, were the only Americans in the 2012 Olympic or Paralympic Games to medal in sailing.

Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies To paraphrase a Beatles song, Kent is in my ears and in my eyes. I grew up there; we moved to Kent when I was in the 8th grade. I attended Franklin Elementary School for one year, Kent State University High School for four years and several years on and off at Kent State University. I got married while in Kent, brought children into the world in Kent and began my magazine publishing career while in Kent.

My mother still boasts a Kent mailing address and depends on the Kent community for services such as doctor, dental and eye care.

She frequents the new Kent Free Library and likes the food fare in Acorn Alley. In October 2013 my KSU High School class is celebrating a reunion at one of the new hotels which are springing up downtown.

Now with enrollment far exceeding Kent’s non-student population, it seems appropriate that Kent be made whole again.

In the ‘60s, when the last major revamping of Kent took place, I covered City Council meetings for local radio station WKNT. That was when the Kent’s deep-thinkers decided to bisect the city with Haymaker Parkway to make it easier to get from one side of town to the other. To me, that move changed the entire city by isolating the downtown from the KSU campus and, as a result, many of the local stores just dried up. That seems to have been the unintended consequence to chopping the town in half.

A new redevelopment is underway now, one that brings Kent’s downtown into contact not only with the university campus, but also with the rest of the town. This redevelopment not only includes a hotel and conference center, but a second Acorn Alley featuring little shops and businesses that cater to the local community.

I don’t know what my life would have been like had my parents not moved to Kent when they did. I don’t know if I would’ve been the first in my family to go to college. Growing up in Kent was a “Happy Days” experience not found very often in today’s society, and I’m thankful for this very important place in my ears and in my eyes — and in my heart.

If you’re reading this November issue before Election Day: Hang on, it’ll be over soon. However, I have to urge all of you to vote for your local school levy.

I can’t understand how people can complain about the United States ranking 25th in math and 17th in basic sciences when many of those same people consistently vote against school levies. How can this country turn out first-rate scholars, scientists and teachers if students are rebuffed at every turn by a lack of funding for teachers, for books, for school facilities and for the very environment that expects children to excel?

Education has become a political issue, when it shouldn’t be.

There’s no room in our democracy for pitting teacher against teacher, student against teacher and the taxpayers against teachers. The way that our schools are funded through taxes on homeowners is not only unconstitutional (proclaimed so by the Ohio Supreme Court since 1995) but unfair – but for now, that’s how it’s done.

Vote for your local school levy even though you don’t have children in school, even if you want to send a message to Columbus, even if you can’t afford it. You may just be funding the next Nobel Prize winner or, by voting against the levy, setting that same child up for a life of crime — maybe even against you.

Talk about your just desserts.

Portage County Commissioners announced consideration of a new radio communications system for use by police, fire and emergency personnel. The

current radio system suffers from coverage shortcomings and a tendency to overplay Ke$ha songs, the latter being the most troubling problem.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, talking up the city’s video surveillance system, advised criminals to go to Hudson if they didn’t want to get caught. Hudson officials responded quickly by launching a fleet of street sweepers to polish the city’s gold-paved streets.

Sixteen Amish men and women were convicted of hate crimes for hair- and beard-cutting attacks on fellow sect members. The attack has rocked Ohio’s The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival was recently recognized by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA) with several Pinnacle Awards, all in categories for events with budgets over $1.5 million.

The Enshrinement Festival received a Gold Pinnacle Award for “Best Event Video” and Bronze Pinnacle Awards for “Best Event Website” and “Best Press/Media Kit.”

Horn of Un-Plenty

/ Thanksgiving, the gardener’s proverbial payday, falls flat for one local dirt digger. /

I guess I first became enchanted with horticulture as a kid, leaning my water-soaked body out of the pool to watch sunflower seeds, dropped from a feeder by careless backyard birds, sprout and grow into thick-stalked flowers that towered above my head. And when I reached up and plucked a black-and-white shell from the massive yellow head and realized we’d inadvertently grown food … that was a momentous day.

I’ve sown a number of gardens since those early days of seed-watching, my own attempts at coaxing food out of the ground, and though the results have been anything but consistent, one thing remains the same — I prep each bed and sink every seed with one hope planted firmly in my thoughts: the expectation of a bountiful Thanksgiving harvest.

In the real world, I shovel composted horse poo and screw together splinter-shaggy boards for raised beds, but my mind’s eye sees only plates piled high with roasted beets and squash, salads brimming with bright spinach and juicy tomatoes, heaping helpings of a casserole made from our very own Kentucky Wonder pole beans.

Once November rolls around, reality looks a lot different. Take this year for example: First, Colorado Potato Beetles sauntered in and removed homegrown mashed potatoes from my family’s Turkey Day menu. A fresh-baked pie stuffed full with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries sounds delicious and probably was for the birds that ate all our fruit. Plump ears of roasted corn, nestled beneath crisped silk inside grill-blackened husks? The stalks drought-dried and died back in July. Our green peppers timed out at the size of my infant son’s fist (maybe we could stuff them with a tablespoon of rice?) and the biggest beet was smaller than that ... way smaller. Vine borers took out our zucchini plants, and it’s a good thing pickles aren’t a 12

Thanksgiving tradition because cucumber beetles destroyed every last vine in our garden.

But our Thanksgiving table won’t be without victories, however small. After months of battling tenacious squash bugs, four plants rewarded our efforts with basketfuls of gorgeous, golden summer squash.

Our green peppers timed out at the size of my infant son’s fist.

The heirloom Kentucky Wonder green beans actually did yield enough for a modest casserole (if we double-down on the fried onion rings). We’ll roast a few homegrown garlic bulbs with herbs from the herb garden, and we have enough peas to give each of my three kids a child’s serving. I’ll stack sliced Roma tomatoes high for extra color, a bet hedged back in the spring when we sunk 41 plants into the ground.

And when our dinner table is packed full with family, perched on chairs borrowed from various rooms in the house, I won’t bemoan the store-bought potatoes we were forced to mash. My conversation won’t center on beets that should have been there, right there, plated beautifully beside the turkey, and I won’t think twice about berries pilfered november 2012

by bird burglars. What I will do is point to the squash, tomatoes, green beans and garlic and announce to my family, “We grew that!”

Then I’ll probably compare myself to a pilgrim and dig in to our harvest. / Rodney Wilson, the descendant of a long line of Kentucky farmers, wishes green thumbs were as hereditary as male pattern baldness and an uncomfortably prominent nose. The Power of Bear Hugs

/ Local mom’s personal mission continues to thrive nearly two decades later. /

Susan Summerville never plans to stop serving the children of Northeast Ohio. As co-founder of Project Ed Bear, she says this volunteer organization is dear to her heart.

Eighteen years ago, Summerville received the kind of news no mother ever wants to hear: Her 11-year-old son had bone tumors. Her son, Ede Bittle, was playing football when he broke his leg and was taken to the hospital. The staff there discovered bone tumors that were later found to be non-cancerous.

Bittle saw other children suffering from cancer during his hospital stay and understood what it’s like to face the possibilities of this disease. Inspired by their experience, Bittle and his mother set out to help those whose diagnosis was not as fortunate as his.

They co-founded Project Ed Bear and started off small by delivering teddy bears (or ‘Ed Bears’) to every child diagnosed with cancer at Akron Children’s Hospital.

“Ede had a teddy bear when he was a child,” says Summerville. “It was very comforting to him. He wanted every child that had cancer to have a teddy bear too.”

Fast forward to 2012: Project Ed Bear is on the rise. Summerville works with the Ed Bear children and plans events, while the now 29-year-old Bittle serves on the organization’s board of directors and works with the graphics team for the group’s website.

This mother-son team and their volunteers work to help young children with cancer every day, and Project Ed Bear has expanded to include more than just teddy bears. The group currently delivers movies, books,

games, computers and special holiday gifts to patients and even throws “after chemo” parties for them. It also awards four-year college scholarships to children with cancer or children who are cancer survivors.

Several years ago, Project Ed Bear began to sponsor Akron Children’s Hospital’s summer camp weekend for oncology/hematology patients at Camp Carl in Ravenna. After funding the camp for several years, the hospital honored Summerville and Bittle’s organization by renaming the facility Camp Ed Bear.

On the Friday night of Camp Ed Bear weekend, the children attend an ice cream party with the treats being served by many of the hospital’s oncologists. Summerville says this is a great way for the children to interact with their doctors in a fun setting, rather than a clinical one. The rest of the weekend includes swimming, laser tag, crafting, horseback riding and a dance.

In 2004, Project Ed Bear was able to finance the remodeling of the Akron Children’s Hospital’s oncology/hematology clinic waiting room, now known as the Ed Bear Cave, which includes a play area for young children.

Project Ed Bear also sponsors LIV THRU ART, an art therapy program inspired by and created in memory of an Ed Bear child named Olivia Ward.

“Olivia loved art,” says Summerville. “She was a child artist. I had a very close relationship with Liv. This project was a wellspring of my heart in her memory, and it serves all of our children with cancer.”

With the LIV THRU ART program, children diagnosed with cancer can choose an art medium that interests them, and then they’re paired up with a professional with expertise in that area. At the end of the year,

a gallery displays the work of these incredible children.

Project Ed Bear’s main fundraiser of the year is its annual gala auction the Monday after Thanksgiving at Quaker Station in Downtown Akron. It typically draws about 700 attendees, and proceeds support the organization’s efforts. This year, the gala is Mon., Nov. 26, and Summerville describes it as “an amazingly fun evening and very emotional as well.”

“Well After War”

>> When Jim McGarrity graduated from Garfield High

School in 1965, he didn’t have many options. He could either go to college to defer the draft, go to prison for avoiding it, wait until they called his name or join on his own. On what he says was a beautiful May morning in 1966, broke and unemployed, McGarrity walked into the Marine recruiter’s office at Main and Market streets and enlisted for three years — three years, he now knows, that would change his life forever.

“My life was so full of great adventures and experiences that people always said, ‘You should write that stuff down,’” McGarrity says. “I had tried many times to face it since as far back as the ‘70s but I could never come to terms with it.”

Unlike an earlier autobiography of his time in Vietnam, “Well After War” leaves nothing to the imagination. One of McGarrity’s main duties in Vietnam was to drive into potential land mine areas before his fellow

troops passed through to ensure their safety. It wasn’t long before he began to blame himself when things went wrong.

“I was a 19-year-old kid who could have cared less for helping a nation fight Communism after being there two weeks and seeing other 19-year-olds chewed up in the most horrific manners,” he says.

“Within two months after arriving in Vietnam in March 1967, I saw people blown to pieces and wondered, ‘Why not me?’ In June, I overreacted to an attack ahead of us, and a Master Sergeant that everyone loved died, and I’ve always felt it was my fault. In November, it started raining and never stopped until the following year.”

Though the weight of McGarrity’s horrific experiences overseas was slowly eating away at his sanity, he can pinpoint exactly the moment everything changed. He was standing on the edge of a road with a fellow Marine in his arms; the man had been severed in half during battle. As he stood there, helpless to save his friend, something inside him snapped.

“It was that very moment that I began to feel the insanity seeping into me,” he says.

“I dropped him, and everything around me went blank until later when I was at a

Despite his fragile mental state, McGarrity continued to serve for the rest of his term. On a 30-day leave a year before his release, his home felt cold and foreign.

“Everyone knew where we had just come from,” he says. “Friends you had all your life wouldn’t talk to you — even family members shied away. Mostly those 30 days, I drove around by myself with a bottle of wine and drank.”

When McGarrity ended his tour in Vietnam, the term “Posttraumatic Stress Disorder” was more of a diagnosis coined by antiwar activists than an accepted anxiety disorder. He enrolled in college upon his return to the United States, hoping to start a normal life, but he quickly felt alone next to fellow classmates and friends who already had established

careers. Over 30 years later, McGarrity began to receive the help he desperately needed.

“I was officially diagnosed at the VA Medical Center in Brecksville in December 2004,” he says. “Medications and awareness through therapy help a lot, but PTSD is an emotional attachment to a traumatic event. During those moments of great fear, the mind changes — there is an actual biochemical change to the way it stores memories and the way we relate to the world and react to it.

“A simple example would be an out-of-theordinary reaction to a dog based on a frightening experience from your past. Magnify that a thousand times, and you begin to see the reaction people with PTSD can have based on numerous ‘triggers,’ say a smell or look or innocent comment.”

With his wife Dorothy by his side (the couple celebrated their 42nd anniversary in August), McGarrity has tried to live his life as normally as possible. He spends a great deal of time trying to bring awareness to the devastating effects of PTSD on war veterans, but that doesn’t mean he’s trying to be some kind of hero.

“Ask any person who’s been to war, and almost exclusively, we don’t see what we experienced personally as deserving of any kind of special recognition because so many others did so much more,” he says. “In the Marines, you do what you’re told.”

Despite all he’s been through, McGarrity doesn’t regret going to Vietnam, but the current wars overseas make his blood boil.

“What pisses me off is why old bald guys send young men and women to fight for causes that don’t make sense or to just line fat cats’ wallets,” he says. “Would I encourage my son to go to war for oil or lies or whatever? The answer would be, ‘Hell no!’”

McGarrity, who recently moved to South Carolina with his wife, plans to continue writing so current veterans and the next generation of veterans can learn from his story.

the convention as an undecided voter who formally sided with Ron Paul, I was unsure what to expect from my experience.

While in Tampa, we spent a great deal of time among the Ohio Republican Party. We participated in a fundraising event at an aquarium featuring Mitt Romney’s son Matt, a quasirally for Ohio Supreme Court Justices up for re-election featuring Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett and Political Strategist Karl Rove, and a National Journal brunch involving several big names in news media and politics. We were even invited to an event from the Foreign Policy Initiative where the topic was American presence overseas, and the speaker was former governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty.

In conclusion, the trip turned out to be an extremely fun and interesting one. I survived my flights, met some interesting, famous and influential people and ate a lot of free food courtesy of the Ohio Republican Party. I heard a lot of speakers I agreed with, and an equal amount of speakers with whom I didn’t necessarily see eye-to-eye.

This August, I was fortunate enough to take a trip to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., through the Bliss Institute and my Campaign Battleground class at the University of Akron.

From the start, the trip was an interesting one.

It kicked off Tuesday morning with my confrontation of my rather strong fear of flying and taking two relatively short flights (though they felt pretty long to me) to arrive in Sarasota. After taking the lengthy drive from our hotel in Bradenton to the Tampa area, you could feel the excitement around the area.

The political buzz started on the route in, with signs for every candidate — whether they were national or local — adorning the billboards along the interstate. Heading into

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to attend the convention itself because the St. Pete Times Forum was surrounded by a mile-wide secure perimeter patrolled by sheriffs from various Florida counties, state troopers and the National Guard. It was slightly disappointing but not a huge issue. Watching the events on

I left the convention with a wealth of knowledge on the stances of the Republican Party, which will certainly help when it comes time to make my decision in November. That night, we met political journalists Anderson Cooper, David Corn and my cable news hero Lawrence O’Donnell, as well as Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Senator Charles Schumer. Wandering the epicenter of Charlotte-turned-“MSNBC-wonderland” was a left-leaning political junkie paradise!

Thanks to our good and loyal friend, Rep. Bob Hagan, we received two tickets into the hall that night, when Bill Clinton would deliver what many have called the finest speech of his life. The young man in our group who knew Hagan would use one ticket, but the second was a toss-up.

by Ian Schwarber In 2008 I watched President Obama give a soaring speech from a packed Invesco Field in Denver and decided when he ran for re-election in 2012, I would be there with him at his convention to add my energy to history. Thanks to the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics, at the University of Akron, I went to Charlotte with 20 other students, and our experience was complicated as well as life-changing.

First, we learned that the president wouldn’t be speaking from the Bank of America Stadium on Thursday night, the only event our delegation had assured tickets. Now that he was coming inside to avoid a possible thunderstorm, our entry was revoked, along with much of our promised access from the Ohio Democratic Party. We made the most of it.

On Wednesday my fiancée Mackenzie Justice, her mother Mary Catherine Justice, a few other determined friends and I attended the Ohio Delegation breakfast, and after hearing speakers Senator Sherrod Brown and

Now, Mary Catherine is a lifelong Democrat, and although she loves her family, she likely adores Bill Clinton more. The group resoundingly agreed that the second ticket was hers, and with a tear in her eye, she said, “What am I supposed to wear?” And then off she went to see one of the most powerful, impactful speeches a lover of liberalism would ever witness.

The next day I met famous types from Eva Longoria to Chris Matthews, Al Sharpton to Michael Steele; that’s quite a mix of individuals, and they were all so cool. But even better was meeting the random believers who haven’t yet had their brush with fame; people like us who just felt the need to represent. Everyone was kind and willing to shake your hand, look you in the eye, and remind each other that we were all here to take part in a symbol to our nation.

At this convention, when tens of thousands who had made the journey to spend one hour with the president got short-changed, we stayed strong, assembled and lifted our collective soul for the country.

We went to Charlotte with an itinerary and created our own. We traveled home with pictures on our phones, inspiration on our minds and smiles on our faces. The energy at that convention means more than any debates, advertising and punditry. It was a revival, and November is when this party will get behind and re-elect President Barack Obama, a commander who will lead this nation out of stagnation. / Ian Schwarber is a senior at The University of Akron, majoring in political science and minoring in homeland security and philosophy of religions. Shaw JCC Chef Julie LeFever and her Cooking Campers provided dinner for the Ronald McDonald House of Akron. Twice this summer, groups of 8- to 11-year-olds learned how to made lasagna, garlic bread, salad and cookies.

Camp representatives delivered the meal to the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a temporary stay for families who have loved ones at Akron Children’s Hospital. The campers decorated bags of cookies with uplifting messages and drawings.

Town and gown join forces locally, but is it for the greater good?

In 2011, at Kent State’s annual Bowman Breakfast, Kent City Manager David Ruller praised the university’s president, Lester Lefton: “Kent State success. Community success.

Coincidence? I think not …He’s taught us that it’s not enough to have great ideas, you’ve got to have the kind of energy and vision that can get people up out of their seats and rolling up their sleeves to help turn ideas into actions.

That’s leadership.”

Such visionary leadership is not only occurring in Kent.

Throughout Northeast Ohio, the heads of city government are discovering compatibility and partners with university administrators. Combining forces has created an irreversible impact on the cities, towns and villages that house the schools led by seers such as Lefton.

Those who earned a degree from one of these colleges or universities and haven’t visited their alma mater in the past 10 years should schedule a visit soon. There are sure to be some surprises.

Among the notable changes are new places to shop, eat and sleep.

There are also renovated stadiums and innovative partnerships for cultural events. Business leaders are holding events in state-ofthe-art facilities.

Today, colleges and towns are working together to create new opportunities for residents, students and faculty, as well as industry and commerce, and in an America that continues to have sluggish growth in its economy, especially in a place as hard-hit as the Rust Belt, one has reason to smile.

Even if it is a puzzling smile.

City leaders and university administrators working together? Though their values and priorities have traditionally been separate and distinct, it appears that those once secluded in the ivory tower and the elected members of city hall have found that working together is the best solution to the complications of managing affairs in the 21st century.

This relationship has been years in the making. Many universities in Northeast Ohio, and indeed, all of the United States, began in the late 1800s as land grant colleges. Their efforts were to advise the federal government on issues of agriculture and business. With their campuses established, they joined the ranks of private institutions of higher learning around the country by becoming “engaged” universities, responsible only to the goals of academic discovery, education and achievement.

In most cases, they retained the roles and rights of nonprofits.

Partnerships with cities were often established in lieu of taxes, further evidence that the affairs of the city and the college were notably separate. More obviously at a certain geographical point, the campus ended and the city began.

Throughout the 20th century, towns and cities grew, filling in the land around the city center and the edge of campus. After World War II, colleges experienced a flux of new students due to, in part, the introduction of the GI Bill and had to expand. Using the resources at their disposal, colleges in the 1960s and 1970s built and developed properties on their own terms, often distancing and discouraging residents and city officials.

According to Roger K. Lewis, professor emeritus at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, campus history is a major player in city and college relationships.

“Residents of college towns, especially people who live near a campus, view higher-education institutions as 800-pound gorillas. Love-hate relationships are typical,” he says.

“On one hand, a campus can provide business and jobs for the community and be a source of hometown athletic and intellectual pride. On the other hand, citizens always complain about adverse off-campus effects: disruptive student behavior, the sometimesseedy quality of student-oriented retail and entertainment destinations, higher residential rental rates because of student demand, student competition for on-street parking and traffic congestion.”

With the lessening impact of the steel industry on the region and the closing of many factories and businesses, the cities in Northeast Ohio that contain these institutions began to suffer. In addition, many more Americans turned to higher education to prepare for occupations in lieu of blue collar jobs once available without a college degree. With a spike in enrollment, it’s become necessary for schools to find ways to develop to meet the demand.

Current economic circumstances have made it more beneficial for city leaders to listen to and seek partnerships with university administrators. Cities that were self-sustaining and flourishing in the ’60s and ’70s are now facing stagnation, deterioration and decline.

Also, as Lewis points out, colleges and universities have a lot of the same planning and fiscal issues in common with cities and towns, making them especially prepared to face the demands of partnering with city leaders.

“In fact, managing the evolution of a campus is akin to managing the growth and redevelopment of a town or city. Like communities, campuses face intense growth pressures, traffic congestion, deteriorating infrastructure, aging and obsolete buildings, inadequate housing, limited land and loss of valuable open www.akronlife.com

space, environmental degradation and uncoordinated construction,” Lewis says. “Providing reliable security has become just as vexing on campuses as it has in cities. Furthermore, tight operating budgets and rising costs can result in the deferred maintenance of many structures.”

To avoid mistakes, current partnerships have sought the opinions of outside experts and have formed alliances with local lenders and developers.

In Akron, for example, city and university partnerships have facilitated the building of InfoCision Stadium, involving some $61 million used to demolish and build a structure that required the help of 25 area contractors and a Cleveland-based design firm.

The next project in Akron is the multi-faceted University Park Alliance — which will create a unified and redeveloped cityscape of 1,000 acres, connecting the north, east and south parts of the city with The University of Akron. There are also designs to bring the downtown and campus together using additional avenues for transportation. Currently, leaders have outlined four districts within the alliance, and The Center for Nonprofit Excellence has held meetings to try to bring the organization’s views in line with the wishes of the public.

The City of Youngstown is working closely with its residents and Youngstown State University on a planning effort titled, “Youngstown 2010.” This proposal promotes a Youngstown that, according to the city’s website, “is smaller, greener, cleaner, makes 48

efficient use of its available resources and capitalizes on its many cultural amenities and business advantages.”

Even a small community in Portage County is getting in on the excitement. Hiram College and the village of Hiram, with a population hovering around 1,300, have partnered with The Ohio State University to find ways to develop while protecting farmland.

Though they’re still working on the details of a plan necessary for the annexation of properties, recently a section of Hinsdale Street was dedicated near campus. It’s the first additional roadway in the village in over 40 years. “[The Hinsdale Street addition] is an important improvement for the village,” said Hiram Mayor Lou Bertrand at the time of its opening. “The future of the village and all its citizens depends on the cooperation with the college, and this improvement is a step bringing development in the future.”

Though projects are moving forward in all of these communities, growth and change appears most sweeping in Kent. Over the past few years, the coinciding tenures of Ruller and Lefton seem to have created a strong bond and shared vision. This has allowed these leaders to make a project called “Campus Link” — which connects Kent State’s once-isolated land grant campus with downtown — into a reality.

The progress has succeeded to the extent that the project has traded its name for the more alliterative “Esplanade Expansion.”

The new name will surely fall away as well, forgotten in the next few years as the joining between the university’s campus and downtown is finished, becoming a regular part of getting around Kent.

The esplanade is not going to be the only new reality. Ron Burbick, a chief developer who is helping shape the downtown vision, told Main Street Kent, a nonprofit organization, that he envisions the city as a booming metropolis by 2015.

It allows communities to become more vibrant, putting them in the position to attract new residents and businesses while keeping the people and businesses they already have.

Construction of The Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center is a joint venture of The Kent State University Foundation; The Pizzuti Companies, a property managing and regional development group; a community funding organization called Finance Fund; and an economic growth driver, The Development Fund of the Western Reserve. At 90,000 square feet, the structure will house a Kent State University store, a 300-seat conference center, a large lecture room and 110 hotel rooms. Plans indicate that this building will open next spring.

The potential for forming both further alliances and physical structures in Kent has momentum, and although the thought of it may make preservationists cringe, Kent will never be the same. Its future wouldn’t exist without the help of Kent State University.

Some argue that this kind of partnership changes the definitions of “city” and “university.” Others say municipalities are leaning too heavily on the ivory tower, and this will cause them to lose their own identity and their ability to act independently.

As a financial advisor, I’m frequently asked for advice. The inquisitive person might be a client, friend or even a random stranger who’s stumbled across my e-newsletter and felt moved enough to send a query (I love these!)

Usually the questions are about themselves or someone close who’s going through a significant life transition and wondering how to deal. Their world’s been altered, forcing them to think about wealth and security in a different way.

Imagine the unexpected: a layoff, a separation or maybe something fortuitous like inheriting a large chunk of money. Your next thought might be “What now?”

These kinds of momentous occasions can be overwhelming. Good or bad, a lifechanging situation followed by an impulsive decision can brew negative longterm consequences for your financial future. It’s times like these that having a financial advisor is essential.

Finding an advisor can be an important step in the rebuilding process. An advisor can help you gain knowledge and confidence by giving you the advice you need to make well thoughtout financial decisions. A good financial advisor can help you navigate life’s hurdles by working with you to craft a well-defined plan for your financial future — the cherry on top, if you will.

Equally important to knowing when to seek a financial advisor is knowing how to find the right advisor for you. Conversations with your advisor can often be quite personal, so finding an advisor you trust is very important. Leaning on friends and family for quality referrals is a good place to start. he Cameos of Caring Program recognizes nurses for their contribution to health care in Summit County and the surrounding regions. Modeled after the successful Cameos of Caring program at The University of Pittsburgh, the University of Akron program continues to celebrate nursing excellence and emphasize the nation’s need for quality caregivers.

The Cameos of Caring annual gala is recognized as one of the region’s premier health care events. Since the first gala in 2002, this event has raised more than $250,000 to support an endowed nursing scholarship at The University of Akron – a scholarship that allows students to focus on nursing studies without the added worry of paying for college.

On Oct. 20 at the 11th annual Cameos of Caring Gala, the University of Akron’s College of Nursing honored 15 nurses from local hospitals.

them to take their newborn home or the teaching I do everyday. I talk to parents on the phone, taking calls as a nurse for Ask Children’s. Each call is unique and requires the nurse to ask good questions, understand the real problem and then determine what needs to be done. Teaching is a big part of these phone calls as well.”

On an overseas experience: After working with Burmese refugees in Akron, Brumfield flew to Thailand with her church to help the Burmese overseas. “At first we didn’t get permission to enter the Mae La Refugee Camp, but we did teach at a migrant school in the village of Poppra,” says Brumfield about a school for the children of refugees who aren’t living in a camp, but are illegally working in Thailand.

Brumfield’s group also visited an orphanage.

“We taught the children lessons on dental care, played games and sang songs,” she says.

“We passed out a lot of toothbrushes and toothpaste too.”

When finally working at the Mae La Refugee Camp, Brumfield and her group taught five different classes to the high school students.

“My lesson included information on hand washing, how to be healthy, how germs spread and dental care,” says Brumfield. “The next time we taught at this school, I also covered the basics of first aid by using a toy doll to act out various injuries.”

On career satisfaction: “Being at a patient’s side when life-changing events are happening. Being a part in encouraging and comforting my patients and their families is a privilege.”

On saving lives: “A patient had developed toxic shock from a tampon she was using. I removed it and continued to assist our team to intubate her, start multiple IV lines and give timely life-saving medications. She survived and returned later to see me and my co-workers. She gave me a big, tearful hug and said, ‘You saved my life!’

Wow! What a feeling!”

On appreciating her career: “What started as a career that wasn’t my first choice, has become a career that I can’t imagine being without. There’s such variety, flexibility and opportunity to give of one’s self. Being able to give and use my nursing knowledge at work, home and in the community is such a privilege. (I’m involved in my parish nursing ministry and got AEDs placed in our church and school.) I recently became a magnet champion for the Stow ED but best of all is working for Akron General – a facility that recognizes and rewards dedication and good work.”

The girl told me she and her mom painted each other’s nails. After calling different floors and asking my co-workers, I found three shades of polish to show the girl. She chose pink and painted her mom’s nails, and the girl’s aunt painted hers so she and her mom would match. The mother later passed, and I felt that this experience would soften a sad situation and give a positive memory for the children.”

On teamwork: “A middle-aged man experienced sudden cardiac arrest at work. His coworkers rendered CPR and restarted his heartbeat using an AED. Paramedics administrated advanced life support en route to Aultman. Our emergency staff began brainsaving hypothermia treatment which was then continued through the cardiac cath lab procedure and completed in the CCU, where he was gradually nursed back to a ‘normal’ state.

If only one of the links in this chain of care were missing, he would have died. I feel both humbled and empowered to contribute to this man making a full recovery and enjoying a promising future.”

On sharing his experiences: “Right from the start, nursing seemed like the greatest profession to me because I get to fully develop myself while learning how to develop others.

As nurses, we are educators, scientists, counselors, communicators, healers, advocates, protectors, facilitators, givers and receivers.

I enjoy representing this at the local middle school’s annual career day. Sharing my perspectives and experiences, and answering probing questions refreshes my passion for this profession.”

A 92-year-old gentleman (and two-time stroke survivor) who had been attending these meetings for over a year shared this story from his days as a medic in World War II: He had found a soldier who appeared to be dead from multiple gunshot wounds, and his commander told him to put the body with the other deceased soldiers. However, he was convinced the man was not dead and, against orders, carried him to safety. He never knew what happened to the soldier until he had recently received a letter from the soldier’s granddaughter who knew the story. In her letter, she said her grandfather had recently passed away, but had lived a long and fulfill-

We were preparing to transfer her to another facility by ambulance for special treatments when she told me how sad she was. Her daughter had just had a baby in the same hospital, and she would never see her. I called OB to see if we could arrange a visit. We took her to OB, and she got to hold her baby granddaughter and kiss her for the first and probably only time. We all cried. It was a heart-wrenching, special moment.”

On being a nurse: “I will never regret having chosen nursing as my profession. The opportunities are endless to touch people’s lives, to be actively involved in someone’s road to health, to be able to make a difference, to ease pain, to be that support for someone when

is taking care of heart attack patients. When a heart attack patient comes in, we have 90 minutes to perform a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and open the occluded artery. A person arrives with impending death, and we perform a procedure and save their life. Fixing their heart is miraculous but what is so satisfying is seeing the patient go home the next day.”

On the power of CPR: “The first event I coordinated was the CPR Anytime class with the YMCA, American Heart Association, Barberton Fire Department and Summa Barberton Hospital. This class instructed 44 community members and YMCA staff on how to perform hands-only CPR, use a defibrillator and recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Since the event, we’ve saved two lives.

“The first was a man whose wife came to our class. She recognized his symptoms and made him seek medical attention. The second was a man who had a full arrest in the YMCA and was defibrillated by staff who had attended the class. He later had heart surgery and survived. Since this event, I’ve done several other CPR Anytime events in the Akron area.”

On the many roles of a nurse: “I love my profession, place of work and community. I feel each of these is closely connected. My profession allows me to participate in my community in various roles. I’m equally a teacher, a caregiver, friend, spiritual leader, comedian, healer, helping hand, listener, father, brother, mentor and so much more.

Wherever I am, whether it’s at home, in a restaurant, on vacation or at work, I’m always a nurse. Caring for others is instinctual and so natural for me.”

On a special patient: “I will never forget a patient that we would take care of frequently. He would come in every month or two and need to be put on a ventilator. He never wanted sedation, and he was always so cooperative and pleasant no matter how he felt. This went on for five years before he died. Every nurse in the respiratory lab was so sad when he died. He and his wife made a lasting impression on all of us.”

“The second component is seeing the positive result of our work. A patient who has been extremely ill walks back in to visit; a family writes to tell us of the difference we made; or even small victories like a patient who transfers out of critical care against all odds and is able to live and attend a pivotal life event, or a family who felt supported and cared for, no matter the outcome.”

The holidays are here, and I’m often asked what wines pair well with the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Although I believe in the motto: “Drink what you like and like what you drink,” the first wine I think of is Riesling because wine with a touch of sweetness would complement the dry white meat of turkey. Here are five wine suggestions to complement your Thanksgiving dinner.

The grapes used in Firestone Riesling from Santa Ynez Valley, Calif., are harvested during the early morning to preserve the floral aromatics and delicate flavors. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless-steel tanks at cold temperatures to quarantine its freshness.

This wine is very well-balanced and would be a great aperitif or pair very well with your turkey dinner.

Hogue Late Harvest Riesling, from Columbia Valley, Wash., is also a very popular choice. Because of the cool nights along the Washington coast, this is an excellent area for producing this wine. The Riesling has a touch of sweetness with crisp flavors of apricot and tangerine.

Italy’s Cupcake Moscato D’Asti has floral notes that dominate with hints of peach and flavors of tropical fruit. This is a soft and balanced wine that has some effervescence and just the right sweetness to pair well with holiday meals.

Firelands Winery, from Sandusky, Ohio, was established in 1880 as one of the state’s oldest wineries. Its Riesling has a touch of sweetness and has crisp apple and banana flavors. This wine pairs well with Gouda and goat cheese or by itself as an aperitif or accompaniment to Thanksgiving dinner.

Geneva, Ohio-based Ferrante Winery is one of the most popular wineries in Northeast Ohio. Its Cranberry Blanc is a new wine and has been very well-received. It would pair well with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner due to its berry aromas and sweet crisp finish.

I love exotic options at restaurants so I ordered the cactus salad, though having tasted it, I dub it “the green bean of the desert,” kinda smooshy and bland. I also chose tacos al pastor (shepherd-style.) Made with marinated pork and pineapple, the dish provided a new twist to give me something to talk about.

My three tacos had enough onions to bring a whole flock to tears but they were caramelized and combined well with the other sweet ingredients. The same generosity was much appreciated in the hearty tequila pour afforded my $3 margarita. Muchas gracias!

I have eaten huevos rancheros in the U.S. as well as Mexico. Nowhere have I tasted them as flavorless as at Rancheros Taqueria; I don’t recommend them. However, I tasted some of the other dishes and was pleasantly surprised.

The fish taco was outstanding, as was the tacos al pastor with an unusual pineapple flavoring. Next time I’ll order one of these two.

The Guac-a-Holic tastes the Chicken Fajita.

This staple of Mexican cuisine is often Americanized by chain restaurants. I was curious to see how this hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint could jazz up a fan favorite.

The rice served on the side gets a C+ at best. However, the chicken and veggies were so surprisingly delicious I forgot about the mundane rice altogether. The mixture of warm marinated chicken, green and red peppers and sweet onions together in a fresh tortilla was a satisfying combination.

Gluten-Free Mom tastes the Chorizo Quesadillas Mexicano.

Still obsessed with chorizo, I was excited to see chorizo quesadillas on Rancheros’ menu.

They can be ordered “American”-style (flat and cut into wedges) or “Mexicano” (folded like a taco and fried.) I ordered them Mexican-style, which made the chorizo nice and crispy, but it was too greasy for my taste. Next time, I’ll try them the other way. Our server, Sergio, was attentive to our needs and patiently answered our questions about menu items.

Ranchero’s decor is stereotypical, but as far as the food goes, I was impressed! We sampled each other’s meals, and each dish I tasted had a unique burst of flavor.

I ordered the shrimp quesadilla, which had a delicate, buttery taste.

The portion was small, but we were served enough chips, salsa and guacamole to leave quite satisfied. I would return to try other menu items, especially the fish tacos and al pastor.

After scanning this restaurant’s exhaustive menu, I nailed down the steak burrito lunch special. Don’t head into this one with a big, juicy sirloin steak in mind. The meat here is thinly sliced and nothing like you would imagine. Nonetheless, this dish was quite delicious.

The fish tacos stole the show at this Diners’ Diary outing. The tilapia - a tasty fish itself was seasoned with a skillfully chosen amount of spices and a healthy amount of cilantro.

The savory, homemade corn tortillas and the extra squeeze of lime made a repeat visit to this restaurant a no-brainer for me.

Southern Tier’s Pumking >> As the story goes, Púca was a creature from Celtic folklore that was both feared and respected.

Púca was said to have tossed wayward travelers on its back as it traveled through the night, offering them the ride of their lives.

Southern Tier’s Pumking, an imperial pumpkin ale, is an ode to Púca. It’s a brew that beer enthusiasts will remember far after the tap runs dry.

Founders Phineas DeMink and Allen Yahn started the brewery with the vision of reviving the practice of small-batch brewing to a region rich in brewing tradition.

Their handcrafted ales are now available in more than half of the United States, as well as parts of Australia, Denmark, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Ontario, British Columbia and the United Kingdom.

Dating back to 2002, Southern Tier Brewing Company began production in the Stoneman Business Park just outside Lakewood, N.Y. By 2003, select varieties of smallbatch ales were locally distributed, and by 2005, sales covered most of New York and Pennsylvania. Today, the brewery produces around 50,000 barrels of beer annually.

In 2007 came Pumking. Labeled with the suggestion to pour this brew into a goblet, this epic beer is filled with enough pumpkin aroma and taste to tantalize your taste buds and completely wreck your palate in the best way possible. With a nose and flavors of vanilla, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg, Pumking is a sufficient substitute for mom’s homemade pumpkin pie. So skip the dessert table this Thanksgiving and make room for a glass of Pumking. You won’t regret it.

Exceptional Entertainment The Kent music scene rocks Northeast Ohio, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The Kent Stage brings nationally known performers to town every week. Amazing Adventures Kent is full of fantastic parks, including Fred Fuller Park, where Kent Parks & Recreation hosts its annual “Art in the Park” event. From there, hop on the extensive network of hiking and biking trails that meander throughout Portage County.

If you’re up for a water quest, Crooked River Adventures will suit you up for an excursion down the Cuyahoga River, starting at Tannery Park. There’s even an outfitter in town — Wild Earth Outfitters — for your hiking, camping, kayaking and outdoor adventure gear needs.
