We Built It, They Came

L

ike most people, I can get grouchy, peevish, cynical and in a downright foul mood.

But this late fall blaze of color has kept me out of my usual pre-winter blahs.

We experienced one of the most beautiful summers I’ve seen in many years – a few days in the 90s, some rain (mostly at night) and the rest a perfect balance of sunshine and gentle breezes, leading to a late turning of autumn colors. And the last few weeks have been cool and crisp with plenty of sunshine, which leads me to imagine that maybe we won’t have winter at all this year.

My golf clubs are still in the back of my car, and my bike rack is still attached. I know, I know. We’ve had some of our heaviest snowfall in November (pardon me for a small flight of fantasy).

If this keeps up, I’ll stay in this mood till my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. Then it’s the Christmas season, when even I look forward to a white one.

I think Ohio this time of year rivals all of New England for color and grandeur. And lately, I’ve been noticing young people in their 20s and 30s really enjoying what we as older adults have come to take for granted. The parks and bike paths, the Metro Parks, the Cuyahoga Valley National Forest, the Canal Corridor and the new Wingfoot Lake Park are filled with families enjoying our great area.

We built it, and they came. We have purposely built a community where young and old come together to live and work.

From the new bike paths on our city streets to the bike carriers on the front of our Metro buses, we’ve created an area that’s attractive to young people and young professionals. And a quirk of fate has made housing here so affordable that young people can buy a house many years sooner than they could in most areas of the country. A $100,000 starter home in the Akron area would easily be worth 10 times as much in San Francisco or New York. Overall, the cost of living here is far lower than most areas of the country.

Our slumping economy has brought a temporary halt to the mini-housing boom we experienced a couple of years ago.

Likewise, jobs have disappeared, and the recovery is by no means assured in the very near future. It’s sad to see people out of work, especially those who haven’t built a nest egg that they can rely on to get them through. And these are mostly young people who are just starting out in life; the same young people for whom this area was designed.

To get them to stay, we need more jobs. We have everything else. We just need jobs to go along with all the other great assets the Akron area has to offer. And everyone is working on this problem, from the mayors to us who do the hiring.

Jobs will come, and when they do, the little secret that is Greater Akron will be a secret no more.

Akron/Canton Dinner of Champions

M

ore than 250 people attended the 1 4th annual Akron/Canton Dinner of Champions event July 13 at Quaker Station in Akron. Ann Amer Brennan, chair of the Brennan Family Foundation, was honored by the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for her ongoing commitment to community service. University of Akron student and scholarship recipient Holly Snyder discussed the life-changing impact of her mother’s MS diagnosis in 2004. Guests also enjoyed a silent auction and dinner.

Proceeds from these festivities support MS-related research efforts and scholarships.

he Akron Urban League celebrated 85 years of service to Summit County with a black tie gala Aug. 13. The event included a champagne toast, a live auction and dancing. Another highlight of the evening was a drawing for a Kia Borrego LX SUV, donated to the organization by Kia Motors on behalf of LeBron James. Bernett L. Williams, the Akron Urban League’s president and CEO, says proceeds from the event will be used to improve the quality of life for Summit County citizens, particularly African-Americans, through economic selfreliance and social empowerment.

Crooked River All Nation Powwow

T

he Keyser Farm Park in Cuyahoga Falls felt the beat of the drums Sept. 12 and 13 during the second annual Crooked River All Nation Powwow. Presented by the Northampton Historical Society, this event educates the public on native customs and provides a place for urban Native Americans to practice their heritage. This year, over 1,000 attendees purchased food, clothing, jewelry and more from 26 vendors. Traditional drums, signers and dancers provided the educational entertainment. Proceeds from the powwow support Akron’s Native American Indian and Veterans Center, which helps about 200 families each year.

H

er mother wasn’t an adventurous cook, so Tamara Mitchell began preparing her own meals as a way to try new things – and to not have to eat packaged food. Nowadays, the primarily self-taught chef also whips up fabulous meals for clients. Whether it’s for couples with kids and busy work schedules or singles who just don’t feel like cooking, Mitchell buys the groceries, brings her own supplies and equipment into their homes, and prepares 12 to 30 meals for them at a time.

Besides her personal-chef service, Mitchell offers catering and party services, romantic dinners for two and handson cooking classes. This fall, she also launched a line of herb and spice mixes – called Season to Savor – just in time for the holidays.

In more late-breaking news, Mitchell recently competed against 48 semifinalists at the Cleveland-region Aetna Healthy Food Fight – and won! On Nov. 18, she’s flying to Los Angeles for the final cook-off against the other nine regional winners. The grand prize: $10,000 in kitchen appliances. Iron Chef Bobby Flay will judge the final round, where the chefs will be challenged to make a healthy Thanksgiving dinner.

It was a little more than 10 years ago when Mitchell first got the idea to become a personal chef. She was looking for a gift for her in-laws and spotted a magazine ad for the services of a local personal chef (so she bought them a gift certificate). At the time, Mitchell was working a corporate job but was considering a career change. Inspired, she launched Dine-In Diva in 2006.

“I spent 20-some years doing things I didn’t necessarily like to do because it paid the bills,” she says. “But I’m fortunate enough at this point to be doing what I like. So I’m happy and living the American dream.”

Mitchell owns close to 600 cookbooks.

Walks ofDISCOVERY

Exploring the Distinctly Urban Space Called Lock 4

N

ext time someone tells you there’s nothing new in Akron, suggest he take a walk down to Lock 4, a new park just north of its slightly older cousin, Lock 3 Park. Artist Chuck Ayers and I did just that so he could show me what he’d discovered during his first visit over the summer.

Lock 4 is the antithesis of Lock 3. That is, Lock 4 is all hard surfaces – brick and concrete – while Lock 3 is an oasis of green stretching southward along Main Street from the Akron Civic Theatre.

Another difference: You have to know Lock 4 is there in order to find it. Unlike Lock 3, it doesn’t front on Main, but instead is reached off Bowery Street, just west of Main.

We walked through a wide entranceway with a wrought iron fence and then descended 34 stairs that could’ve been built for a giant – since each are at least a foot high. They extend down to the Ohio & Erie Canal, which streams noisily along its northerly path.

If anyone needed a reminder that Akron is a grownup canal town, this scene would certainly do the trick.

I needed no reminder, but it still took this visit and a study of the Akron map to reacquaint me with the canal’s course through town. The waterway disappears beneath Cascade Plaza, just north of Bowery, and doesn’t resurface until it passes beneath the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway north of West Market Street.

That look at the map also reminded me of a stub called Canal Street, which runs parallel to the canal and to Howard Street at Beech Street.

Standing on the plaza at Lock 4, we were surrounded by buildings towering on three sides.

The most interesting sight was the view looking south, in which the Civic Theatre lobby stretches across the canal on 10 giant concrete columns.

To the north are the PNC Center at 1 Cascade Plaza, the AT&T Building (formerly Ohio Bell) and the entrance to the Cascade Plaza Building.

The Akron YMCA Building dominated the view to the west.

Looking east, we saw the backs of six shabbylooking brick buildings that run between the Civic Theatre and the Akron Savings & Loan Building at the corner of Bowery and Main.

They were all vacant, as was Akron Savings. Many, but not all, of the windows in the six are boarded up, and one still containing glass features the word “YES” across one of its panes. One of the brick structures is white and has narrow fire escapes. Ivy grows up the back of another. The back of one building juts out to the west and is supported by four concrete columns.

Theatre lobby to Lock 3 Park where, looking upward, we studied the elaborate network of fire escapes along the theater’s outer wall before continuing onto Main Street for a look at the fronts of the brick buildings.

The yellow brick building at 178 South Main bears the name Whitelaw. Its neighbor at 174 has a neoclassical design along its top. The one at 164 also has the word “YES” on one of its windows. The other buildings show no addresses, but one displays posters and artists renderings promising, “Coming Soon: Main Street Apartment Living” and “Residential Lofts Later.”

Over the summer, Lock 4 was the scene of four Wednesday night blues and jazz concerts and, according to promoter Peter Karas, their popularity will likely result in twice as many concerts next summer.

They look impressive and taste divine, but the really extraordinary thing about these fabulous desserts and drop biscuits is how easy they are to prepare.

You’re sure to find a new favorite here — whether you need something special for a casual coffee with friends or a dazzling finish to a fancy dinner party.

Gingerbread is a term used to describe a variety of sweet foods ranging from soft cake to something close to a ginger biscuit. The common thread are predominant flavors of ginger and a tendency to use honey or molasses rather than just sugar.

They can be made well before guests arrive, and a few last-minute touches send them to the table with effortless style.

The first recorded mention of gingerbread being baked dates back to 1793 in Shropshire, United Kingdom.

It became widely available in the 18th century.

The tradition of cutting gingerbread into shapes takes many forms and exists in many countries, with wellknown examples being gingerbread houses and the gingerbread man.

Traditionally, these gingerbread men were dunked in port wine!

Pavlova with Cream and Fresh Fruits For dessert mavens, Pavlova — a dazzling finish to a special meal — is a must.

4 large egg whites, room temperature ⁄8 teaspoon cream of tartar

1

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 ⁄3 cup unsweetened, finely shredded coconut, optional

1 pint fresh blackberries or black raspberries 4 large, ripe kiwis, peeled and cut into pieces 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and thickly sliced

In a large bowl of an electric mixer, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar at medium speed until frothy. Beat in 1 cup of sugar, a Tablespoon at a time, until the meringue is thick and glossy.

Beat in the vanilla and then fold in the shredded coconut (if using). Scoop the meringue into six mounds on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the center of the oven for about 1 hour, until crisp and lightly golden. (Meringues will still be chewy on the inside.) Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

1 cup + 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar, divided use

Freshly whipped cream

Heat the oven to 275°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray it with cooking spray.

Crush half of the blackberries or black raspberries in a bowl, and toss with the remaining 1 Tablespoon of sugar. Allow to macerate at room temperature to create a sauce. Just before serving, toss in the remaining berries.

Set meringues on individual serving plates. Arrange kiwi and strawberry pieces on plates and top meringue with cream and some berry “sauce.”

The fresh and dried leaves are used traditionally in Mediterranean cuisine, having a bitter, astringent taste that’s highly aromatic and complements a wide variety of foods.

Gingerbread Fruitcake

Rosemary Lemon Biscuits

You either love fruitcake or you don’t! In this flavorful cake, dried fruit is used instead of the sugary, artificial colored candied fruit. The flavors are the perfect complement to the holiday season.

These drop biscuits are the easiest to prepare, with no need for kneading or rolling of the dough.

Warm from the oven, they’re light, flaky and irresistible!

1 1⁄3 cups unbleached, all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 large egg, beaten

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 Tablespoon lemon zest

¾ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¾ teaspoon ground allspice

2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh rosemary

½ teaspoon baking soda

2 cups pastry flour

½ teaspoon salt

1 Tablespoon baking powder

⁄3 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar

½ cup cold unsalted butter

½ cup molasses 1 large egg, beaten ¾ cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 ½ cups dried fruit, finely chopped (such as cranberries, apricots, figs, dates, cherries) ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans Heat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 10-inch springform pan.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, pepper, allspice, baking soda and salt.

In another medium bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and brown sugar until creamy. Beat in the molasses, egg, buttermilk and vanilla.

On low speed, gradually beat in the flour mixture just until blended. Stir in the dried fruit and nuts.

Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes.

Remove from the pan and serve warm, or cool completely.

Heat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, egg, lemon zest and rosemary.

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt.

Grate the butter into the mixture.

Using your hands or a pastry blender, work the butter into the flour mixture until the pieces are about the size of peas.

Form a well in the center of the flour mixture and stir in the buttermilk mixture just until blended.

Drop the batter by large Tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheet to form 12 biscuits.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center of a biscuit comes out clean. Makes 12.

Fairlawn (attached to Hilton Hotel) Average cost of an entrée: $20 Appetizer: Funky tuna tartare tower. A huge pile of delicious ingredients, great on their own, but perfect together.

Seasonal dish: Cowboy Steak – a giant, juicy, bone-in rib eye – topped with a fried onion and served with a heaping pile of garlic mashed potatoes and broccolini. Beau’s is known for what Chef Beau Schmidt calls, “good perceived value,” and I’d have to agree. The portion size for the cost is a steal.

About Beau’s: Beau was 19 when he opened his first restaurant. This is his third location—and it’s thriving. And while the hotel brings in a lot of business, much of the restaurant’s clientele is Beau’s community following. With Beau’s extensive menu, it’s a great place to go for big meals or just for apps and cocktails. The tuna tartare is one of their top sellers, along with the award-winning (Gourmet magazine ’89) chicken sausage that Beau’s mom, Jerry Schmidt, still makes today. The place to sit is the beautiful terrace with a fireplace, overhead heaters, open windows and two flat-screen TVs.

Lucia’s Steakhouse

Canton Average cost of entrée: $20 Seasonal dish: Sea Bass topped with roasted tomato and pesto, served with house rice and a zucchini basket. Fresh and flavorful, this dish is truly a guilt-free pleasure during a season of indulgences. Crisp on the outside with a pillowy, scallop-like center. The roasted tomato and pesto, while visually apt for the season, works perfectly with the fish.

About Lucia’s: Lucia’s has been open since 1941, with the exception of the two years the family – headed by Faith Anne Flickinger (granddaughter of the original owner) – joined with Rob Johns and relocated to the Belden Village area.

Chef Rick Young says they tried to keep the menu close to the old Lucia’s and then “kicked it up a notch.” The menu now includes a selection of fresh seafood, signature garlic butter-topped steaks perfectly cooked to order, Italian favorites and a few Lucia’s classics – like homemade crab cakes or cubanella and long hot peppers, which the regulars like to “shmear” on their bread.

Moe’s Cuyahoga Falls Average cost of an entrée: $25 Seasonal dish: Coriander and cashew-crusted salmon topped with a grapefruit, horseradish and chive beurre blanc, and fried leeks and watercress – served with root veggie mash. The combination of flavors blend deliciously. The crispy leeks and cashew crust lend interesting texture, and the beurre blanc was so good, I wanted to lick the plate. The root veggie mash and coriander make this dish hearty and perfect for the season.

About Moe’s: Moe’s opened in 1998, after owner Maureen “Moe” Schneider gutted and restored the Schnabel Building – which had been built in 1916 as an A&P grocery and then spent about a quarter-century as Pete Swallow’s Liquor. In the 1960s, it was the Kit Kat Club, a bar serving burgers and dogs.

Moe’s featured dishes – an array of eclectic ingredients – change monthly, and are the creations of Chef Jared Kirby, who has lived and studied around the world. The regular menu, which changes roughly twice per year, features salads, tavern food, calamari, lobster pierogies and short-rib sliders. The bread, pasta and sausages are all made in house.

One Red Door Hudson Average cost of an entrée: $20 Seasonal dish: Seared grouper with lobster and potato gnocchi gratin, wilted spinach and Maine lobster jus. The fish, lobster and gnocchi are a perfect marriage of flavors, but the really special part is the lobster jus, which Chef Sean Monday has been perfecting for a decade (saffron, brandy and vermouth are just a few of the secret ingredients).

Vaccaro’s Trattoria formerly of Hudson’s Downtown 140) and Michael Schwartz. The restaurant opened in September and has been extremely well received. The menu is decadent – with gourmet pizzas made from imported Italian flour (I tasted the lobster, fontina and spinach – wow!), share plates such as the chef’s famous bacon-wrapped roasted dates, and burgers with brie, date and applewood bacon aioli. The interior is beautiful, with lots of natural texture like heavy raw-wood beams, laced leather bar stools and a wall of varied recycled wood. Their next venture, an attached burger joint called Flipside, is slated to open this month.

Bath (Ghent Road, right off 77) Average cost of an entrée: $17 Seasonal dish: Porchetta, slow-roasted pork shank, caramelized onion mash with sautéed escarole in braising reduction. This was a huge portion of tender pork, perfect for those cold Akron nights. The escarole combined well to cut the sweetness of the reduction.

About Vaccaro’s: The Vaccaro name has been synonymous with traditional Italian food and pizza since Frank and Angelina Vaccaro first opened Vaccaro’s Pizza in 1956. Frank was declared the “pizza king of Akron” by the Board of Summit County commissioners in 1975, and when son Raphael took over in 2002, he took traditional Italian to a whole new level. While pizza is still a staple on the menu, customers also can enjoy old-world traditional Italian with a nouveau twist. And the wine list is extensive, with prices ranging from $15 to $400. Under Raphael’s guidance, the staff is adept at recommending a wine to perfectly complement dinner.

The unemployment rate in Ohio is hovering right around 10 percent, well above the national average. And there’s no end in sight – with unemployment expected to remain above 9 percent for at least the next two years. Everyone knows someone looking for a job. Yet somehow, many people still believe that the current state of affairs doesn’t apply to them.

I was once one of those people. And this is my story...

I have a master’s degree and five years progressively higher-level marketing communications experience.

I went back for an advanced degree thinking I’d graduate more marketable – experienced, yet young enough to be a sought-after candidate. I thought the current economic problems and unemployment rate wouldn’t affect me because I’d done what it takes to set myself apart.

I was wrong. It has taken me a full year since graduation to get a full-time job. My job search began during my last semester in school – and lasted 18 months.

There’s a collective thinking out there that unemployment happens to “those people” and not to me, because I’m different. But the truth is, I wasn’t different. It was just as hard for me as it is for so many – especially in my generation. According to a Pew Research Center study, 37 percent of Americans ages 18 to 29 are unemployed or out of the workforce. The unemployment rate for adults ages 20 to 24 is a whopping 15.6 percent. Without a doubt, the Millennial generation – those born between 1980 and 1991 – is being hit hard by this recession.

We simply cannot get our lives started.

Many critics blame us for our joblessness, calling Millennials lazy, entitled and instant-gratification junkies. As reported in the Akron Beacon Journal earlier this year, the average salary offered to employees with a bachelor’s degree is 1.7 percent

less than in 2009. New hires are starting at a lower pay scale and will suffer wage losses of more than $100,000 during their careers. In addition, according to the book “Strapped,” men 25 to 34 with bachelor’s degrees are making only $6,000 more than men in 1972 with high-school diplomas. The statistics are shocking. And it’s hard to listen to our generation being stereotyped as globally lazy when we’re faced with these kinds of obstacles.

I can’t blame those of us who have simply given up.

And while the negative descriptions of Millennials may be true for some, they’re not true for all of us.

I’ve been making my own money since I was 12, and I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in three years (10 days after I turned 21). I’ve worked professionally for six years, including during the time I was getting my master’s. During my professional career, I haven’t known a time when getting a job was easy, so I’ve consistently done creative, outside-the-box marketing to make myself stand out and highlight my value to an employer.

While I was seeking employment, I volunteered my skills, ideas and talents in an effort to keep myself relevant and to continue to build my portfolio. In addition to utilizing standard job-searching techniques, I used innovative approaches to job searching, such as sending a Starbucks $5 gift card, along with my résumé and a note suggesting we meet over coffee. I spent hours looking for jobs on the Internet, tailoring my résumé and cover letter for each job.

Many critics blame us for our joblessness, calling Millennials lazy, entitled and instantgratification junkies.

I grew increasingly frustrated as days turned into weeks and weeks into months – and I wasn’t receiving any kind of feedback. It was especially disheartening because my efforts had worked in the past. In two of my previous professional job searches, which also took place during a depressed economy, I was offered multiple jobs and could choose which position was best for me. During this job search, however, I often couldn’t even get an acknowledgement that my information was received, let alone reviewed.

As for my creative, unconventional efforts, they did garner feedback – some positive, some indifferent and some negative, including scathing criticism that left me shocked, depressed and caused me to temporarily give up. However, it was my creative approach, along with good fortune and networking, that landed me my current position.

I feel like I can finally start my life and build my future.

My sympathy and frustration for the unemployed in my generation is heartfelt. I wish more people understood the challenges we face. I wish older generations would understand why those of us who do want to work are having such a hard time. And please, stop telling us to move! Some of us want to stay in Northeastern Ohio and in Akron – an area in desperate need of retaining young talent, residents and progressive citizens who want to contribute to society.

It’s true. Some Millennials — like some Gen Xers and Baby Boomers before them — are lazy, unmotivated and lacking a work ethic, but a lot of us just want an opportunity.

And the ability to move out of our parents’ houses.

I cried when my current boss offered me the full-time position. And I’ve never been happier professionally. I was especially lucky because I worked in my position part-time for six months, so I truly knew it was where I wanted to be.

I’m so grateful to have again joined the ranks of the employed. I no longer cringe at the thought of seeing people I know and having to have the simple conversation of, “So what are you doing now?” I no longer have to pay for health insurance on my own. I no longer have to borrow money from my parents to pay for my car.

All About Abigail On the Weekends: During the day, I like to hike with my rescue dog, Cosmo Kramer or shop! I love the Summit County Metro Parks and am on my 9th year of the Fall Hiking Spree. I can be found on weekend nights in Highland Square, specifically The Matinee or Annabell’s.

Favorite Places to Shop: a boutique in downtown Chagrin Falls, Nola True. They carry a lot of indie labels and have much the same look as Anthropologie – but not nearly as pricey. From there, it just makes sense to go to Beachwood, and I spend more time there than I’d like to admit!

Favorite Places to Eat: If I could have my way, I’d eat all of my meals at the Diamond Deli, Cilantro or Sakura.

In My Free Time: I love to read. I’m a news and celebrity gossip junkie. I’m currently reading two books: The Serial Killer’s Apprentice (James Renner book about unsolved murders in Northeast Ohio) and The Purity Myth (Jessica Valenti – 3rd-wave feminist). I don’t watch much TV, but I never miss Real Time with Bill Maher or The Jersey Shore (my guilty pleasure)!

I Have a Passion for: history, feminism, fashion and politics. (I volunteered on two campaigns last year – one Democrat, one Republican). I’m also a member of the Junior League of Akron and enjoy volunteering. Also, I grew up taking dance (14 years), and this past spring semester, I enrolled in a ballet class at the University of Akron. I’m planning to continue studying ballet at either the University of Akron or a local dance school. Lastly, I highly enjoy Broadway shows and go to Playhouse Square with my mother, often.

About Her Love for Akron: It’d be hard to find another young person more in love with Akron than I am. First and foremost, my family and friends are here. I really think Akron has everything you could ever want – nightlife, education, shopping, restaurants. It’s easy to get around and easy to live here. It’s diverse and can be as much of a fish bowl as you want it to be – Akron can be provincial but can also feel like a bigger city. I love it here, and I don’t want to move!

By 1971 and under Dean’s direction, the company was grossing $46 million annually. The actual ownership of the company remained with his parents until 1975, when they passed it along to their three children. Though profits were to be divided equally, Dean became president and controlled the day-to-day operations. Fred and Sophie were made vice presidents.

The streets of downtown Akron drip with sins, secrets – and scandals.

Constantine “Dean” Milo was the son of Katina and Sotir, two Albanian immigrants who moved to Akron in the 1940s and built up a cosmetic business they started in their basement. Dean worked in the family business with his siblings Fred and Sophie, and by 1969, he was effectively running the small business for his parents.

A man wants his brother dead – and his gunfor-hire is a disgruntled employee the brother fired. A prominent member of society hides salacious acts at an apartment rented under his alias. A search for illegal guns at pawn shops leads police to a judge abusing his seat on the bench – and ultimately uncovers a countywide scandal of misconduct involving several officials.

Like every city, Akron has some dark corners to its past. And while most scandals come and go (replaced by new scandals), some are just too scandalous to forget...

When police found Dean Milo on Aug. 11, 1980, he’d been shot twice in the back of the neck – a blank telegram laid near his body.

On the surface, it wasn’t a bad deal for everyone concerned, but as the years passed, Dean moved Fred and Sophie to less critical posts and later, fired them for pouring thousands of dollars into another family-owned company. Although they continued to receive their six-digit incomes and still owned 66 percent of the common shares, they were no longer hands-on members of the company – and the rift was complete.

Soon after Dean made several overtures to Fred to buy his and Sophie’s shares in the spring of 1980, Dean was found dead. And with no leads, cops were at a standstill, and the case started to go cold.

Growing impatient, Dean’s wife hired private investigator Bill Dear, who soon discovered Dean had a lot of enemies, many in his own family – including his mother. In fact, Dan Moldea – author of “The Hunting of Cain,” a book on the Milo murder – believes that Dean’s mother not only contributed to the animosity, but may have even encouraged it.

“In my opinion, it was the mother that sort of egged this thing on,” he says. “The father went along for the ride.”

Dean had established a lengthy list of enemies that began with his immediate family. With all this in mind, and after a few hot tips and a long trail of questioning, Dear tracked down Tom Mitchell, a Vietnam veteran who told officials that, although he didn’t kill Dean, he was offered money to – by Terry Lea King, a go-go dancer and friend of Dean’s brother, Fred. After Mitchell’s arrest, he led police to King and a man named Barry Boyd, Fred’s attorney.

After his arrest, Boyd admitted involvement. He explained that in the spring of 1979, Fred asked him to kill his brother, but he refused and recruited King. King, however, was unsuccessful at lining up a hit man.

With no takers, Fred turned to a disgruntled former employee named Tony Ridle (who’d been fired by Dean) and recruited vending-machine company owners Frank Piccirilli and Harry Knott to arrange the hit. Ridle eventually confessed his involvement and incriminated Fred. Fred was arrested in December 1980, but since most of the evidence against him was circumstantial, investigators needed to find the triggerman.

Detectives got their break when they were made aware of David Harden, a small-time thug from Kentucky who’d bragged about murdering a Northern business executive. Harden had been recruited by John Harris, a Phoenix biker-gang member who owed money to Piccirilli and Knott.

During his police interview, Harden learned that he had received a tiny fraction of the $22,000 paid out for the murder.

Angry, he cooperated with police and revealed everything he knew about the crime.

Harden pleaded guilty in the 1982 trial, claiming Harris offered him $600 to kill Dean. Harden testified that he and Harris called Dean from a bowling alley to confirm he was home. After Harden rang the doorbell, Dean went to the window and asked who it was. Harden claimed to have a telegram for him. When Dean opened the door, Harden pushed him down and shot him twice.

With Harden’s testimony, Fred was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years to life. He died in prison in 1998 from a heart attack at age 53.

In a succession of trials lasting a year and a half, 11 conspirators were found guilty and sentenced to prison. The number of convictions related to the crime marked a record for the Bath Township Police Department and the end of the town’s biggest murder investigation in memory.

In 1972, Summit County officials got a call from an apartmentcomplex resident, saying his neighbor’s door had been left open and a light was on. It was snowing. As police searched the apartment and checked behind a closet door, they discovered floodlights, drop cloths and pictures. Hundreds of pictures, in fact – all showing a nude middle-aged man and underage girls.

Socially prominent James Dickinson Bell II was an Akron native.

He and his wife lived in an 18-room mansion near Merriman Road and Memorial Parkway and enjoyed a good life and a high 48

standing in the community. As the son of a rubber factory worker, Bell had become chairman of the multimillion-dollar manufacturing firm Portage Machine Co. by the time he was 35.

This is the Jim Bell he wanted people to know. But officials had discovered his alias, Jim Pepper, who lived in the apartment.

Now retired, Larry Momchilov at the time worked for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The one time he spoke with Bell, he had to ask: Why’d you do it? “He answered me frankly,” says Momchilov.

“He said, ‘You know, I’m so rich. I had so much money I could get any woman I wanted, but then it got to the point [where] it was boring and I wanted a new adventure.’ ” Bell threw frequent (and wild) parties at one of his many apartments – where he often photographed naked women. In the beginning, these women were over 18. But when that got “old,” Bell moved on to something more adventurous.

Momchilov says Bell used a prostitute to find a young girl, whom he paid for her time. And the young girl then found other young girls to come with her. But the money he paid these girls wasn’t much.

“They may [have gotten] anywhere from 5 to 40 bucks, maybe,” says Momchilov. “He’d offer more money for taking off their clothes, then more to get in bed with him, but it wasn’t much.

One time he took a girl to Kmart and bought her a shirt for $1.50.”

One of the most disturbing aspects is the way Bell fooled so many mothers into letting him spend time with their children.

For example, he’d attend programs for single mothers and act like a father figure – and later, he’d use these girls to produce child pornography. All along, Bell was married and had two little girls at home.

Officials found more than 27 girls who’d been abused by Bell.

“We had a huge amount of evidence against him,” Momchilov says. “It was unbelievable.”

Bell was sentenced to four to 25 years in prison for child molestation but only served several years. His influential friends orchestrated his release in 1981. So many people had written letters that the parole board was convinced Bell was cured. But Momchilov knew it wasn’t over. “I was shocked,” he says. “I knew Jim Bell wouldn’t quit.”

Bell knew he was going to have to make some changes if he was going to blend back into society. There were no sex-offender registries at the time, so he moved to Florida and reinvented himself. Bell and his wife lived in the prestigious Rio Vista neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale, and it “appeared” he was making a fresh start. But in 1998, police received a tip that Bell and a woman in her late 20s, Tina Marie Oakley – who worked as a babysitter for various families – were taking children to motel rooms. There, Bell would sexually assault them while she took photos. In return, Bell paid her mortgage and made her car payments.

One abused girl began talking about her molestation to everyone, including a school counselor, who contacted Children’s Services. They in turn called the Fort Lauderdale police – who began closely watching Bell. They got the evidence they needed in October that same year, when they caught Bell nude in the La Quinta Inn with two young teens.

“They arrested him,” says Momchilov, “and dragged him down into the street naked while everyone watched.”

Having accumulated the photographs of dozens of children he’d molested, police knew what Bell and Oakley had done. Bell insisted the girls were lying – and he stuck to that story even after two of his victims from Ohio walked into the Florida courtroom to testify against him.

Momchilov had, with some struggle, convinced two girls who’d been involved with Bell in Akron to testify in Florida, along with him. Also testifying was an 8year-old girl who’d been brought to Bell at a Florida hotel by a prostitute. “She had red hair in pigtails and was holding a teddy bear,” says Momchilov. “It really hit me – what the heck was going on down here?”

Bell was found guilty, and Oakley was sentenced to 15 years. Justice was finally served – or so they thought.

But in 2008, Momchilov got a phone call, informing him that some of Bell’s friends thought the judge had made mistakes and wanted Bell retried. Apparently, officials had worked out a deal, which would’ve let him out in 2012. Bell didn’t live long enough. He died in prison in May 2008 of throat cancer.

“The pervs move on, but the victims really suffer.

They suffer for years,” says Momchilov. “[This case is] a good example that we don’t always know who does these things. It could be anyone.”

When Detective Helmut Klemm and Sgt. Edward Duvall Jr. began looking in Akron-area pawn shops for illegal weapons that were to have been destroyed but were ending up back on the street, they also ran across some scandalous rumors about a judge.

Today Tim Smith teaches at Kent State University, but in the ‘70s, he was reporting for the Akron Beacon Journal. And he remembers the political power Jim Barbuto had even then. Barbuto was a major player in local government and politics, a well-connected Democrat in a time when the party dominated Summit County government. But Barbuto had great ambitions: a judgeship.

He succeeded. He was elected as a Summit County probate judge in 1979. “I think he wanted the respect that went along with being a judge,” Smith says. “Jim came from a harsh background, and my impression

was that he was always trying to gain respectability.”

Even early on, Barbuto’s reputation was tainted: He was known as a lady’s man. In the afternoon, according to Smith, Barbuto would take women to a hotel downtown, just a couple blocks from the courthouse.

But some thought it was more sinister than adultery.

“There’s not much for a probate judge to do, so Barbuto got appointed to criminal cases because he had the time,” says Smith. “There were allegations he was using his position on the bench to collect sexual favors.”

These rumors of favored trials made their way to Klemm and Duvall. Unfortunately, they felt the original prosecutor on the case was a Barbuto protégé.

And after failing to attain a different prosecutor for the trial, they contacted Geraldo Rivera, a reporter at the time for the national TV news program “20/20.”

On national TV, Rivera not only exposed Barbuto as a crooked judge, but played up his preference for being spanked while wearing women’s underwear.

Not long after, Barbuto was indicted on 26 counts but was convicted of only two felony charges – intimidation and gross sexual imposition. Barbuto would spend just 78 days incarcerated before being excused for “health reasons.” Though the scandal had cost him his law license, marriage and most of his friends, he still went on to run two different area restaurants after his release.

Barbuto was just one of several officials convicted.

Then-retired Akron Police Capt. Clyde Longacre pleaded guilty for illegally taking 17 guns that were confiscated, but not destroyed. Coroner’s investigator James Crano pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty as a result of handling of firearms in the coroner’s office.

Summit County Sheriff Anthony Cardarelli pleaded guilty to reduced charges of dereliction of duty and obstruction of official business, and was also indicted on gun-related charges.

Smith says County Auditor John Poda also “got caught with his hand in the cookie jar” taking bribes, but that had nothing to do with Barbuto. Neither did a county coroner who got caught stealing from corpses. Still, with the exposure of such rampant corruption, many people had serious doubts about the integrity of their Summit County officials which, according to Smith, may have contributed to the county’s decision to switch to a charter form of government soon after.

“I’m so lucky to love my job, and I hope I show that to my patients, their families and my co-workers every day by trying to give 110 percent,” she says, adding that the best part of her job is “making patients and families comfortable and reassured during their hospital stay.”

An “Excellence in Customer Service” award winner in Same Day Surgery because of her professional attitude, Scott says, “All my ‘Thank You’ cards and letters from my patients are the greatest award – and reward – for me.”

Scott lives in Dover with her three dogs, Mesa, Kayla and Molly.

She enjoys music and flower gardening.

She finds the most satisfaction from giving comfort and support to the children in her care – even when that means sitting with a two-year-old leukemia patient in isolation to just talk and play.

“Over my 30 years of nursing, our profession has experienced tremendous growth, and my love and passion for our profession has also grown,” says Forgach.

Forgach received her nursing degree from the University of Akron College of Nursing in 1979. In 2001, she became a Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse and, in 2006, she received the Corrine M. Rho Memorial Outstanding Oncology Nurse Award.

Forgach, her husband, David, and son Tim, 21, live in North Canton. In her spare time, Forgach enjoys swimming, playing games with family and friends, and bike riding.

Wandel started school to become a nurse more than 20 years ago, but “life happened.” One husband and three children later, she went back to school and, in 2008, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kent State University with her BSN. She’s now a staff nurse on the Hematology/Oncology Unit.

“I was originally drawn to nursing because of my interest in math and science,” says Sherrill. “I also enjoy taking care of complex patient situations.”

Akron City Hospital “I’ve always been fascinated by the medical field,” says Gray, whose experiences have ranged from working in an orthopedic surgeon’s office to surgical mission work in the Dominican Republic.

“When my kids were both in school full time, I also went back to school full time – to pursue my nursing career.”

Upon graduating in 1994 from Kent State with her BSN, Gray became part of the Neuro/Trauma Unit at Akron City Hospital – and has remained loyal ever since. “I’ve devoted my entire career to Neuro/Trauma, and I feel a strong commitment not only to the treatment of stroke patients after a stroke, but also to volunteering and promoting community awareness on stroke prevention.”

Gray also devotes her time and talents to the Nurse Ambassador program and the Preceptor Program – and her passion for her profession is easy to see.

“I love nursing,” she says. “I love being with people, and I love that every day is different and brings new challenges every time I step on the unit. … And I love encouraging young people to choose this as a profession.”

Gray lives in Tallmadge with her husband, Tom. Their daughter, Lindsey, 27, and her husband, Mike, and their son, David, 24, and his wife, Sarah, all live nearby. In addition to spending time with family, Gray enjoys traveling.

“I’ve been asked more times than I can count why I chose hematology/oncology,” she says. “I always respond, ‘Why wouldn’t I?’ I admit, I have days when my emotions are raw, but I know at the end of the day, I was able to help my patients and their families navigate through some of the most difficult decisions they may ever have to make.”

Playing an integral role in the implementation of Relationship-Based Care on her unit, Wandel serves as chair of the Unit Based Council, helping to guide her co-workers through the process of developing an implementation plan. She also serves on the Shared Governance Task Force, was an active volunteer for Nurses’ Week and serves as patient satisfaction champion on her unit.

Wandel says the most satisfying part of her career is, “when I can make my patients smile. I feel like I’ve given them a bit of happiness and perhaps an opportunity to step away from the challenges they’re facing.”

Wandel and her husband, Chris, live in Manchester and have three children, Chris, Megan and Anna.

Sherrill graduated from Metro Health Medical Center in 1991 and has been at Akron General Medical Center for 19 years. Throughout her career as a nurse at Akron General, Sherrill has served in cardiology, developing sound clinical judgment in the treatment and management of coronary artery disease.

Currently a Cardiac Testing Specialist in the Heart & Vascular Center, Sherrill was elected by her peers to the Unit Based Council for Cardiac Testing and is a member of the Relationship-Based Care Committee, whose objective is to put patients first while improving relationships with self, co-workers and families.

In addition, Sherrill has been a leader in developing policy and procedures in the department and in assisting with training of nursing staff within her department, as well as in others.

She and the Testing team work hard to meet the daily challenges, to accomplish the overall goals of the organization and to satisfy patients’ needs. To that end, Sherrill is often heard saying, “We have to step it up!”

Sherrill and her husband, Brian, live in Wadsworth and have three children, Kaitlin, Connor and Carson.

Melinda Wiles Aultman Hospital Wiles became inspired to go into nursing while living with a 16-year-old quadriplegic friend of the family. “Her family lived with ours due to financial constraints, and I witnessed everything her nurses did for her. I was intrigued by the care they showed and the knowledge they had,” says Wiles, a 2000 BSN graduate from Ohio State University who holds a certification in maternal newborn nurse.

Currently an Outreach & Bereavement Coordinator, Wiles is an advocate for patients and families dealing with perinatal bereavement and was instrumental in establishing the Aultman Memorial Stone at Forest Lawn Cemetery for families to remember their children.

Through her leadership, Wiles has provided individualized bereavement education and resources to families, disciplines throughout the foundation and outlying hospitals in need.

“I love knowing I’m making a difference in people’s lives,” she says. “I love the diversity of my roles. … And I feel that it’s a privilege being with families during such a difficult time.”

Wiles also serves on the board of “Gods Tiny Angels,” which provides support and financial assistance for burial of perinatal losses. And in 2009, Wiles established the Wiles Wellness Foundation, which raises funds to support community organizations assisting families experiencing perinatal losses. Beaty and his wife, Karen, live in Norton and have two children. He’s active in his church community and loves to play softball and run. He’s also an avid cyclist —using his bicycle as his primary source of transportation.

“Wherever you’re called to serve, whether overseas or volunteering in your community, do it for the joy of helping people.”

Gingerich lives in Uniontown, and her hobbies include volleyball, snow skiing, sewing and traveling.

Lee R. Beaty Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Center

Prior to becoming an RN, Beaty served as a surgical technician in the US Air Force, both active duty and reserve.

In addition, he retired as Major in the Medical Services Corp. of the Ohio Army National Guard. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and Health Care Administration and was previously certified in advanced life support and as an EMT. Beaty received his BSN from the University of Akron.

He has been employed in Orthopedics for more than five years in varying roles, most recently as a surgical nurse in the operating room. He also has experience in the pre-op area, as well as in the post-anesthesia care unit.

Beaty is described by his co-workers as an excellent source of knowledge and a great advocate for patients and families, as well as co-workers. He’s always willing to jump in and help. He’s dedicated, hardworking and compassionate and has a “can do” attitude.

Faith Gingerich Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute

Gingerich became a nurse as a way of following in her mother’s footsteps. “My mom loved her work as a nurse, and I never heard her complain about her job or her workload,” says Gingerich, who wrote in her memory book as early as kindergarten that she wanted to be a nurse.

Since graduating from Malone College in 1990 with her BSN, Gingerich has worked in a variety of areas, such as medical/surgical, geriatrics, home health care, and labor and delivery. She currently works as a staff nurse on the Traumatic Brain Injury Unit at Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute. Gingerich says that satisfaction for a job well done can be found anywhere from helping to deliver a baby to helping someone learn to walk again to having a patient say, “I missed you yesterday.”

Kathy Burns Medina Hospital

“I went into nursing because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives,” says Burns, who graduated from Cleveland State University in 1990 with her BSN and is now a critical care educator at Medina Hospital – where she provides support and education to staff in the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department and Immediate Care Center.

As an Emergency Room nurse, Kathy says it’s fulfilling to provide care, reassurance and education to help people through a medical crisis. In her role as an educator, Burns nurtures young nurses to help them grow into confident, competent professionals and guides seasoned nurses.

“I’m proud to be a nurse,” says Burns.

“We have much to offer – both in the healthcare setting and also in the community.”

Burns is also very involved in Boy Scouts of America and has used her nursing skills to teach first aid and provide care at scouting events. This past summer, she was the chief nurse for the National Scout Jamboree 2010, where her responsibilities included setting up 20 medical facilities to meet the needs of 45,000 Boy Scouts. She was the first nurse to be given a national leadership position in the organization.

Burns and her husband, Christopher, live in Medina with their sons, David, 19, and Matthew, 17. Burns is devoted to her family, her church and the Boy Scouts. She’s currently pursuing her master’s degree to become a CNS.

“Nursing has something for everyone,” he says, “whether you want to get your hands dirty or make the healthcare system better.”

“Although the nursing care can be a challenging profession,” says Ferriell, “I’ve never regretted my choice.”

After graduating from Youngstown State University, Derthick began his career at Robinson Memorial Hospital on the Orthopedic Unit, where he spent more than 15 years. When the unit merged with oncology, he expanded his specialty skills to cancer and palliative care.

Although Derthick has always worked night shift, he’s well-known throughout the hospital for not only his nursing expertise, but his willingness to help others.

One of the things she loves: “the patients who teach you about yourself, which is one reason I love working with the elderly.”

Early in her career, Ferriell was caring for a patient in the final stages of her life. With her family at her bedside, the patient would periodically open her eyes and call one of them over to sit next to her. Then she’d take their hand and tell them how much they meant to her and what her favorite memory was of them. “It was touching for me to be part of that experience,” says Ferriell, “and to learn how important it is to tell those around you what they mean to you.”

Ferriell describes herself as a “people person” who has always enjoyed taking care of others – so nursing is a perfect fit for her. Ferriell currently resides in Uniontown.

Mark Derthick Summa Health System Robinson Memorial Hospital

Derthick has been a nurse for 25 years – but says he became one by mistake.

“I was going to school to be a medical technologist and heard the university was going to drop the program.” So he picked up a program that would accept all the credit hours he’d already taken: nursing.

To more effectively deliver care to outpatients in Convenient Care Services on the Oncology Unit, Derthick volunteered to work a 10-hour shift that extends into the day shift – eight hours of inpatient care and two hours that start the schedule for outpatient care. It’s not uncommon for patients to vie for early-morning appointments with Derthick.

Derthick and his wife, Cindy – who’s also a nurse – live in Newton Falls. They have two children, Megan, 18, and Dylan, 16.

In his spare time, Derthick volunteers for his son’s high school football team.

Dr. Cynthia Capers Honored for Bringing Cameos of Caring to Akron At the gala, Dr. Cynthia Flynn Capers was awarded the 100th Cameos of Caring statue in recognition of her ongoing support to the Cameo’s program and the College of Nursing, and her contributions to the nursing profession.

A visionary leader, Capers brought Cameos of Caring to the Akron region in 2002. Modeled after a similar gala that originated at the University of Pittsburgh, Cameos of Caring has become one of the region’s strongest collaborative programs designed to collectively advance the professional nursing practice.

Capers background as a bedside nurse, an advanced-practice mental health nurse, an educator and a nursing leader have shaped her career and positioned her as one of the strongest nursing advocates today.

“As a senior in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do,” says Ingram. But that quickly changed, when she attended an open house at Akron General School of Nursing.

“Something clicked, and I knew I’d found my career.”

After graduating in 1974 from Akron General Medical Center School of Nursing with a diploma in nursing, Ingram began her career at Summa Barberton Hospital as a nurse on the Maternity Unit. She currently works in the Center For Emergency Services, where she also serves as a preceptor.

She’s also an active member of the Nursing Leadership Group. One of her many career highlights: her perfect attendance record – 35 years and counting!

Besides her job, Ingram feels strongly about volunteering and has donated her time to organizations such as Project Hope (which helps Akron’s homeless), the Battered Women’s Shelter and the JAM Program at Hoban. In addition to time, she has donated blood – more than 12 gallons. And as a breast cancer survivor, Ingram also has strong connections with Relay for Life activities.

Ingram lives in Barberton and has two children, Emily, 21, and Eric, 17. As a stress reliever and favorite pastime, she bakes – and shares the goodies with her co-workers. She also enjoys golfing, bowling, card making, hiking and crocheting.

“To be a small part of the healing process,” she says. “To hold a hand of a suffering person, to hug a family member, to comfort a patient and then watch that patient improve is, in large part, the reward for many long hours and tired feet.”

Cvammen lives in Akron with Bill, her husband of 43 years. They have two sons and spend as much time as possible with their five grandkids.

Brasse says the most rewarding part of her career is the “direct, hands-on” patient care. In fact, living in a small community, Brasse has had people stop her in the grocery store and thank her.

“I share smiles and touch lives,” she says, “and it’s my ‘mission’ in my profession to make a difference.”

Brasse lives in Wadsworth with her husband, Russ, and has two children, Sara, 30, and Wes, 28. In her free time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, knitting and walking.

Lois R. Cvammen Summa St. Thomas Hospital

“At an early age, I felt a strong desire to help people who were hurting,” says Cvammen, who graduated from East Orange General Hospital School of Nursing in New Jersey in 1967 and started her career there as an OR nurse.

There, Cvammen met her husband, and because of his business, they moved several times – during which Cvammen worked as a medical/surgical nurse and an ER float nurse. It was as a float nurse that Cvammen learned to love Critical Care Nursing – when she floated into the ICU and met a remarkable charge nurse.

In 1986, Cvammen and her family moved to Akron. In 1988, she began working in the ICU at St. Thomas and has since precepted and helped teach many new Critical Care nurses.

She’s also an active member of the Greater Akron Chapter of the ANCC, a member of the Ergonomics

Diane Brasse Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital

Around her 7th birthday, Brasse was given the book, “I Want to Be a Nurse.”

Fast forward a few years… “Then, while in high school, a wise man – my father – said, ‘Try it. If you don’t like it, nothing you learn will be a waste.’ I never looked back,” she says.

A new graduate nurse from St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in 1977, Brasse began her career at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, where she worked for one year before moving on to the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital in Fremont, Ohio.

Mary Hensler Summa Western Reserve Hospital

In college, Hensler wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her life – until she took a personality/vocational test offered through the university’s psychology department. “My highest scores were in the medical/nursing fields. And I didn’t know anyone who was a nurse,” says Hensler, who graduated in 1983 with her BSN from Kent State University.

During her years as a nurse, Hensler says that, “If nothing else, I’ve learned to appreciate all the fine interconnections among a person’s emotional, physical and social states. A tilt in any direction changes everything.”

Hensler currently works in the Emergency Department and says the best part of her job is “hearing people’s stories. Everyone has at least one good one.” In addition to her nursing duties in the Emergency Department, she serves on Nurse Practice Council and is always looking for new ways to improve both the department and the hospital. Hensler was recognized by her peers in 2009 by being awarded the Excellence in Nursing Award.

She currently resides in Hartville with her husband, Arthur. Her two children, Emma, 22, and Arne, 19, are away from home attending college, which leaves Hensler time to quilt, read biographies and anthropology-related books, garden — and train for her first marathon.

Akron Life & Leisure spoke to three Akron financial experts to debunk some of the myths of planned giving and to get some advice on how to creatively make charitable investments that are appropriate for you and your financial situation.

What’s the Right Age? “People have goals that will change, from a charitable giving standpoint, as their life changes,” says Brian Lake, a senior financial advisor and branch manager for Ameriprise Financial Services. “They can really take a look at options when they’re in their 30s or 40s, all the way through their 70s and 80s.”

Although younger adults may not have as much money to contribute, there are options available for them to make a financial impact on their favorite nonprofit.

Lake says many of his younger clients partner with local businesses to host parties or small events, and then they’ll donate a large chunk of the proceeds to a charity or school. He has also worked with individuals who chose to transfer highly-appreciated stock they received in an inheritance to their charity of choice.

Another option that’s popular today is donating a used car to a charity as a tax write-off.

“In this way, the donors don’t feel like they’ve disinherited their family, but they have enjoyed observing the benefits going each year to their favorite charities,” Jentner says. “These two trusts are examples of how creative you can design this, depending on what a particular family’s needs and objectives are.”

Typically, autumn is when individuals consider making charitable contributions to take advantage of last-minute tax benefits, but Jentner says this year, that has become a point of contention among tax professionals.

“In the current uncertain political environment, people don’t know whether Congress is going to increase taxes in 2011 or keep them at their current levels,” he says. “If there’s going to be an increase in tax rates, it could be to the donor’s advantage to delay giving or not to be as aggressive, which isn’t what charities want to hear because they obviously have needs right now.”

“After the election in November, Congress is going to have to grapple with what’s going to happen to tax rates in future years, and they’re going to have to do something between November and whenever they leave for the holidays.”

Do I Need a Will?

Determining the stability of your financial future, choosing a worthy and reputable charity and setting up a planned giving program can be a daunting task for any donor, but FirstMerit Bank’s Ken Dorsett, executive vice president of wealth management services, says you don’t have to go it alone.

“We always say, ‘Talk to your advisors.’ It could be someone like us, your attorney, your accountant, insurance professionals and certified financial planners. All are knowledgeable in this area and are good people to start with,” he says. “Regardless of your level of wealth, or lack thereof, there are opportunities to give.”

Dorsett also suggests that everyone, regardless of economic status, should have a will. Rather than trying to tackle it yourself, he stresses the importance of meeting with a competent attorney and drawing up this kind of document, whether it includes a planned giving program or not.

“What most people don’t know is that if you die without a will, the state you reside in writes it for you, which is something you do not want,” he says. “I’m a zealot about this because I’ve seen so many cases where people didn’t have a will, and there was fallout after the fact.

And, it’s always good for people, at least every other year, to review their estate plan because things change.”

How Does Akron Give?

Locally, Dorsett says donations are down over the last two years for the arts community, but they’re up for emergency services, homeless shelters and food banks.

“The philanthropic community is engrained, and people view that as a priority. They see their fellow citizenry in need, so programs like that are getting a larger share than they had in the past,” November 2010

he says. “This community’s always been supportive of the arts, but I think the arts have taken a back seat to these more pressing needs over the last two years.

This is something that morphs. It’s very fluid, the nature of the philanthropic component to one’s life.”

What is Osteoporosis?

What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone.” In medical terminology, it describes a disease in which bones become weak and can break from a minor fall or sometimes from simple actions like sneezing. Any bone can be affected, but fractures of special concern are fractures of the hip, spine and wrist.

How large is the problem? The National Osteoporosis Foundation has estimated that more than 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and an additional 33.6 million have low bone density of the hip. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, eight million are women and two million are men.

While osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person’s disease, it can strike at any age.

How is osteoporosis diagnosed? Osteoporosis is diagnosed by obtaining a bone density measurement. Bone density measurement is indicated in women age 65 and older, and men age 70 and older. It’s also indicated in women after menopause and men age 50 to 69 who have risk factors for osteoporosis.

What are the risk factors for developing osteoporosis? There are several risk factors for developing osteoporosis. Those include being female, older age, family history of broken bones, being small and thin, certain race/ethnicities (such as Caucasian, Asian or Hispanic/Latino), personal history of broken bones, low sex hormones (menopause in women, low testosterone in men), low calcium and vitamin D in diet, inactive lifestyle, smoking and alcohol abuse. In addition, there are certain medications such as steroids and anti-convulsion medications and certain diseases such as anorexia nervosa and rheumatoid arthritis that can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

How can you decrease your risk of osteoporosis? About 85-90 percent of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and 20 in boys. Building strong bones during childhood and adolescence can help to prevent osteoporosis later in life.

Here are a few tips to help build stronger bones and prevent osteoporosis:

• Get adequate calcium (about 1200 mg of calcium) and vitamin D (800 to 1000 units) from diet, supplements or both.

• Perform regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises.

• Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.

• Discuss with your doctor your bone health and have a bone density when appropriate.

How are Endocrinologists involved in the management of osteoporosis? Endocrinologists are trained in the management of metabolic bone disease, some of whom are especially trained in bone and mineral disorders. Several hormonal diseases have the potential to result in weaker bones, and those are best evaluated by an endocrinologist. Examples include untreated excessive thyroid hormone, excessive cortisol and vitamin D deficiency. There are other metabolic bone diseases that can be misdiagnosed and therefore mistreated as osteoporosis, so a consultation with an endocrinologist is important.

Oak Park Hill Estate A mansion, a millionaire manufacturer and a marriage

Built in 1870, the Oak Park Hill estate was home to Akron industrialist Lewis Miller and his wife, Mary Valinda. The wedding of their daughter, Mina—the seventh of 11 children—to Thomas Edison (yes, the Thomas Edison) on Feb. 24, 1886, was Akron’s social event of the year. People from all over the country arrived by train, were picked up in shiny carriages and whisked off to the estate.

Edison (in chair, facing forward), during one of his visits to the mansion. Edison claimed he taught Mina Morse code so they could converse in secret, even while the family watched. He also claimed that’s how he proposed—and how she responded “yes.”

Though Mina’s role as Mrs. Thomas Edison was difficult (he frequently stayed late at the lab and forgot anniversaries and birthdays), Edison adored her. A note found in one of Mina’s gardening books reads, “Mina Miller Edison is the sweetest little woman who ever bestowed love on a miserable homely good for nothing male.”
