Grandma’s House There’s something magical about going to your grandparents’ home.

Lately, my thoughts have been gravitating toward Betty, my late paternal grandmother. Amidst floundering attempts at crafting sourdough bread — a task at which my wife and I have been spectacularly unsuccessful — I’m reminded of my grandmother’s cooking. Not sourdough, to my knowledge, but something quite similar: buckwheat pancakes. These cakes, fermented and sour, were her specialty. The simplicity of her recipe was measured not in precise units but a casual cup of this, cup of that and water till it was right. Without exaggeration, it is my choice for a final meal.

My brother and I were fixtures at our grandparents’ home during our childhood.

They lived in Brimfield, their modest ranch perched atop a high elevation in Portage County. It was surrounded by an expansive yard that my brother and I adored. Our days weren’t consumed by the glow of TV screens or the flicker of video game consoles. Instead, we ventured outdoors, immersing ourselves in games of imagination — from playing cars and swinging bats in impromptu baseball games to rounds of gin rummy with my grandma.

Our excursions for ice cream were a treasured ritual. Although we initially patronized Emagine’s in Brimfield, we later transitioned to Katie’s Korner Ice Cream in Kent. My grandmother, wary of main roads, navigated us through a labyrinth of back roads, infusing each trip with a sense

of adventure. Occasionally, these journeys would culminate in shopping at Gold Circle. Regardless of the day’s escapades, we invariably returned home to a comforting meal of grilled cheese with tomato and tea with milk — a nod to her English heritage, where tea was a sacrosanct afternoon communion.

Summers at the house were an idyllic blend of tranquility and creativity. Our amusement was drawn not from an abundance of toys but from the simplicity of wooden blocks and a pogo stick, alongside the boundless realms of our imaginations.

Our afternoons were often spent wandering the woods with Gretel, our dog — as much a part of these visits as we were.

(Turn to pg. 20 for more stories about furry companions.) My grandmother, ever the indulgent host, spoiled Gretel with scraps.

In her twilight years, my grandmother remained in her home, her passion for Cleveland baseball undiminished. I treasure a voicemail from her, filled with her candid thoughts on Manny Acta (a former manager) and her dismay over the trade of pitcher Cliff Lee. Now, raising a 4-year-old, I find myself wishing he could experience the kind of days I did at my grandmother’s house.

Fortunately, he enjoys the loving attention of his grandmothers, spending cherished time with both my mother and his grandmother from Westerville.

being photographed means I have very few images of her. Out of respect for her wishes, I’m refraining from using her photo.

If we meet again, I’m mindful that she’d likely scold me with affectionate irritation.

Instead, see this photo of the majestic tree in her front yard — a silent witness to countless childhood adventures — captured on the day her house was sold. We bid farewell to a familiar home — and a place rich with memories.

Although its Front Street storefront may be new this year, the offerings at Thulung Boba House in Cuyahoga Falls taste tried and true. Shaking up both fruit and milk bubble teas, the spot, opened by a Nepalispeaking Bhutanese couple, also offers an extensive list of 23 tea flavors from taro to pineapple. Brown sugar milk tea ($4.75) is popular — we tried blueberry tea with popping lychee ($5.25). Plus, grab a lunch of steamed momos — savory veggie or chicken dumplings ($8.99-$9.99) accompanied by a sesame, chili, tomato, ginger and turmeric sauce. End your meal with an ice cream-topped cookies-and-cream bubble waffle ($6.44) for a sweet finish.

Mini Explorers Cooped-up families can tackle cabin fever by taking little ones to the transformed Akron Children’s Museum. The space received a 3,000-square-foot expansion last year, including upgrades and five new exhibits, such as Blast Off — where kiddos can build and launch mini rockets.

A dog helps locals breed inspiration.

sourced to a local agency — importing dogs from countries like Colombia and spending anywhere from a year to 18 months on obedience and socialization training. A sheriff ’s office handler would be paired with the dog, and the team would be sent away to get certified by the state for a specific purpose. That cost a flabbergasting $25,000 per K-9, a price paid five times over by the sheriff ’s office. Thankfully, Wiltrout saw an article about rescue dogs being trained as K-9s and pitched the idea to Summit County sheriff Kandy Fatheree.

When I first met Dottie in January, the new Summit County Sheriff’s Office junior deputy in training had lots of energy. Training to be a narcotics K-9, the cute AustralianGerman shepherd puppy was leashed by Lt. Michelle Wiltrout’s feet. Still, she tried to jump on the sheriff’s side table, paw at the carpet and chew on Wiltrout’s finger. The lieutenant took out a braided rope toy, and immediately, Dottie was content.

Dottie is so much more than her spirited puppy antics. She’s the first rescue pup that the sheriff ’s office is training in-house to become a K-9. Previously, training was out-

“You have to be very responsible with the people’s money,” Fatheree says. “Our K-9s are extremely valuable. It’s like having two officers, but the cost can be very difficult.

When Michelle talked about it, I’m like, Absolutely. She’s adorable, and why not a rescue?”

Now, Wiltrout is working on yearlong obedience and socialization training with Dottie. She’ll then partner with a sheriff ’s office employee, an evaluator for state certification, on training Dottie to identify the odors of heroin, cocaine and meth before going on to get state-certified.

The puppy loves saying hi to people at the courthouse, staying on a leash and following basic commands. At first, Dottie was tentative about the stairs and elevator in the office. After a few tries, though, she now runs up them with ease. Dottie may be catching on so quickly because she is a high-drive dog with great agility, physical stature and an energetic social demeanor — but her bond with Wiltrout is making their working relationship even stronger at the office and home. And there may be others like her.

“If she is successful, we’ll try to do more,” Fatheree says. “We get to pick that next handler. That person is going to have to take on the responsibility of a puppy and the morale building that comes with that. It may be a change for the future here.”

Fatheree hopes to have more narcotics K-9s to ensure drugs aren’t smuggled into the jail and prevent overdoses. This initiative is just one of Wiltrout’s many innovative ideas.

“She’s been around for 30 years. She’s seen what worked before and what didn’t work so well,” Fatheree says. “So it’s being able to have a different perspective, thinking about the future — how can it be better?”

It’s inspiring to see a long-time employee continually step up and make improvements. At Akron Life, we too want to spark innovation. Akron singer-songwriter Jim Ballard chats with local musicians about life, purpose and perseverance.

T

he road has come full circle for University Heights native and singer-songwriter Matt Harmon. Eager to find a way into the music biz, the budding musician majored in media production at the University of Oregon. There, he mastered the use of recording software, eventually landing in Los Angeles.

After interning, Harmon worked full time in recording studios, designing background ambiences for film and TV — even for the high-profile “18 Wheels of Justice,” starring Billy Dee Williams.

Seeking more affordable living, Harmon returned to Northeast Ohio and began performing at open mics. With influences like 12

Paul Simon and John Prine, he has cultivated a unique songwriting style. It moves effortlessly from weighty songs like “Marble,” which explores environmental destruction, to the joyful “Three Days on the Road,” about a young traveling family. His sunny lyrics set the tone of the latter — “From shore to shining shore, nothin’ but truck stops, soda pop and candy bars.”

Now a Cleveland State University instructional technology specialist, Harmon helps teachers integrate tech — and still gigs locally.

Jim Ballard: How do you know when it’s time to record?

Matt Harmon: I’m always writing as an exercise, but I find the best ones are the ones that you just wait for — as if they’re given to you.

Then when I realize I have a batch of songs that hang together … it turns into an album.

JB: Who do people say you sound like?

MH: Oddly enough, Cat Stevens, even though he’s not in my wheelhouse. I guess it’s something in the water.

JB: A lot of performers tend to be introverts off-stage, but once onstage, they become more outgoing. Do you find that to be true?

MH: Not with me. I’m pretty outgoing, having to work with students and teachers. I often need to diffuse a situation, and I tend to do that with a little bit of snarkiness, humor and, of course, kindness. I bring that same person to the stage.

JB: Are you working on anything now?

MH: I have my fourth album in the works.

It’s a 10-song collection that will be titled “Love in Troubling Times.” Its unifying theme is how we rely on friends, family, love, our dogs … to help us through. Pandemic, politics … you name it. The world needs songwriters.

H

onesty is at the heart of Charlie Mosbrook’s folk songs — as well as his drive to build a better world through music. Mosbrook often covers Woody Guthrie’s songs, and his performances during a Guthrie program at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 established him as a local authority on the iconic singer-songwriter. The recognition springboarded him to tour the country, sharing his songs of people — their hopes and dreams, troubles and joys.

He doesn’t shy away from addressing societal issues in his music. His song “Remember Who We Are,” inspired by events such as the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and the Black Lives Matter movement, won second place in the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival.

Mosbrook’s song, “Up Among the Stars,” was also featured in the iconic folk magazine No Depression.

Mosbrook’s life and career changed dramatically in 2010 when he sustained a debilitating spinal injury. After surgeries and physical therapy, he picked up his guitar again — establishing his music career and gaining both a wider audience and a national presence on folk radio stations.

JB: What artists inspire you?

Mosbrook gives back through charitable and advocacy programs and performs

Jim Ballard: What got you started in writing and performing?

Charlie Mosbrook: I got involved in a youth group through my church. We’d meet in a place called RapArt, which was filled with music, painting, poetry, pottery and a recording studio. I ended up in a performance piece that required me to write a song and play guitar.

CM: James Taylor and Paul Simon, amongst others.

JB: What are some of your favorite venues to play in The 330?

CM: I love the Rialto Theatre in Kenmore and the G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula. I also really enjoy the Music in the Valley festival in Bath.

JB: Do you have a song or album of your own that you especially like?

CM: I very much like my album, “Something to Believe,” but I never liked the mix. I’m presently remixing and remastering it for release in early February.

JB: What’s coming up?

CM: I have a few songs on the easel, and of course, I’m very involved with my work as president of Folknet. I was just elected to the board of trustees of Folk Alliance International. And of course, I continue teaching.

JB: You teach a class through Roots of American Music. Do you learn from your students?

CM: Yes! There’s always something to learn.

GREAT SAVE As Nicole Boberg drove down Akron’s West Market Street in August, a black furball zoomed by. It was so teensy-tiny she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her — but Boberg went into rescue mode after she and her son, John, got a better look.

“We saw this little kitty. It was trying to cross Market, but it was fearful of the curb,” recalls the Akron resident.

“It was the size of a pop can — it was so tiny.”

“Everyone was smitten because she was so fun,” says Boberg.

UNEXPECTED GIFT Joie Askew has assisted over 100 rescues in getting medical attention while working as a veterinary assistant at the Humane Society of Summit County. But last December, as Askew began prepping for a typical surgery, she instantly fell in love with a 2-month-old puppy under her care.

“I became so attached to her, checking on her post-operation to make sure she was OK,” says the Portage Lakes resident. She adored the puppy — a pit bull and American bulldog mix named Lilo — so much that she decided to talk to the adoption director. Askew decided to foster Lilo through the holidays.

Askew wanted to see how the puppy would adapt to her other pets, cats 4-year-old Otis and 3-year-old Binx, as well as her 1-year-old golden retriever mix Adonis. Immediately, the two dogs bonded.

“They became two peas in a pod instantly the night they met,” says Askew, who lives with her boyfriend. She continued to foster Lilo for the rest of the week and signed adoption papers to bring her into the family just after the new year.

Training came naturally to the new addition as she learned to complete tasks by watching her furry siblings.

“We always keep a bell at the door, so whenever they have to go, they ring it, and we let them outside,” says Askew. “She’s fitting perfectly into our household and our routines, getting along with everyone and being social.”

Lilo is a quick learner and wants to be just like Adonis — especially when it comes to using the stairs.

“She thought because her brother was so big and likes to skip steps, that she could too. She tumbled down, and I caught her right before she fell,” Askew says. “That was her favorite thing — trying to jump down the stairs.”

Yet Lilo’s personality is all her own.

“She’s very vocal and is a little sassy with an attitude. She will talk back to you,” Askew says, “like a little bark.”

Now, Askew and Lilo are inseparable. “She loves to be held like a baby,” Askew says. “She makes me feel like an actual mother.” // KC

MOOD BOOSTER When Emily Prestage and her mom, Melanie, first met a 5-month-old puppy with short blond fur and floppy ears at Buckeye’s Missions and Sanctuary in Brunswick, the Staffordshire terrier mix burrowed into their hands and legs.

Despite being a puppy, Mabel is calm, making it easier to potty train her and take her on walks.

“She was just a lover. She wants to be around you and wants to be loved, truthfully,” Emily says.

“That’s ultimately why we decided we wanted her because she was such a loving dog.”

“She’ll be laying there, and she has a smile on her face,” Emily says. “I’ve never seen a dog have that big of a smile.”

Besides shredding toys and indulging in post-potty treats, Mabel enjoys trying to chase her new brother, the family’s 13-year-old cat, Grady.

LOVE AGAIN When Brunswick residents Scott and Melanie Turner wound down at the end of the night in late October 2023, their 1-year-old tortoise cat, Lillybug, often snuggled with Scott in the recliner. Melanie, however, sat alone. She missed their longtime pet, Simba — the cat had been like her shadow and had passed away two weeks prior.

When Scott met the almost 3-month-old kitten around November, she was so playful that it made it tough to hold onto her. He adopted her, put her in a pet carrier, took her to their basement and called Melanie down. She heard a mew and saw the new kitten.

Instantly, she got emotional.

It was a slower process to get Lillybug acclimated to her new sister. They had to be separated at first. Now, though, they are two of a kind. The pair nap on the cat condo together, chase each other and even clean one another. Scott once found them snuggled up together in a drawer. And the Turners are just as attached.

“She likes giving me love and helped fill the void,” says Melanie, who realized Simba wouldn’t want her to be hurting. She’s glad she was able to open her heart to Ladybug. “I fell in love with her. I knew everything was going to be OK.” // KP

CUTEST K-9 Summit County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michelle Wiltrout goes to work with a diaper bag stuffed with food, bowls, toys and treats for her baby — her fur baby, to be exact.

With big brown eyes, 4-month-old German-Australian shepherd puppy Dottie, wearing a sheriff’s T-shirt, makes one cute junior deputy. Dottie is undeniably adorable, but she is also training for an important role — narcotics K-9.

“It’s like being a new mom again,” says Wiltrout, a Norton resident, who is married with a 10-yearold Cavalier King Charles spaniel and two young kids. “She is very spoiled.”

That sweet “little stinker,” as Wiltrout calls her, is setting a precedent. Dottie is the first rescue puppy the sheriff ’s office is training in-house. Previously, it outsourced training, which costs a whopping $25,000 per K-9 — as it did for its three patrol, one bomb and one narcotics K-9 officers.

After a year of obedience and socialization training, the dog will undergo about six weeks of narcotics odor training to get state-certified. Dottie could do narcotics traffic stops or undercover work. Her success could lead to more K-9s trained in-house, which also provides a morale booster. Even the toughest officers melt around the pup, including one who dropped to all fours in full uniform to greet Dottie in the courthouse.

“Our K-9s bring out a more human part of law enforcement.

The guys are all macho and then you put a puppy in the room and within minutes — it’s amazing to watch the change,” says Summit County sheriff Kandy Fatheree.

Upon meeting the 2 1/2-monthold pup at North Canton’s Pawsitive Hope in mid-December, Wiltrout knew Dottie had the right social, fearless demeanor for the perilous job.

“You need them, in the K-9 world, to be a little brave,” Wiltrout says. “She was pouncing, running between everybody saying, Hi.” Co-workers call the beloved pooch “captain,” joking that she outranks Wiltrout. All day long, Dottie gets visits from co-workers wanting to pet her, say hello and feed her dog treats stashed around the office. Dottie knows the Czech K-9 commands for sit and lay, getting rewarded with toys like a braided rope.

“The rate at which she is mastering simple things for a puppy in comparison to what I’ve seen in the past is astronomical,” says Wiltrout.

With an illuminated Don Drumm sculpture behind us, the reimagined 180-seat steakhouse is sleeker and more sophisticated than its predecessor — the football-themed Kosar’s Wood-Fired Grill. Opened in August, Valley’s Edge serves Midwestern corn-fed wood-fired steaks and global seafood from a largely reinvented menu — aside from holdovers including Kosar’s crab cakes and house-smoked prime rib.

Live-edge wood planks over the hostess booth set the rustic tone that’s inspired by its proximity to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as do rippling metal wall panels imitating the Cuyahoga River. Served under a glass dome filled with clouds from the smoker, the smoked OLD FASHIONED OF THE WESTERN RESERVE ($15) with Buffalo Trace bourbon and dehydrated orange slices — as well as the smoked TOWPATH BRAMBLE ($14) with Hendrick’s gin, blackberry brandy, dehydrated lime slices and fresh blackberries — create intrigue as they arrive. As the dome is lifted, applewood-scented smoke billows out, spotlighting the oakiness of the bourbon in the old fashioned. The surprises don’t stop there. Each cocktail has an organic raw sugar rock candy stirrer, adding sweetness for however long you let it dissolve.

“The rock candy … really helps add complexity to your drink,” says executive sous chef Lee Cooper. “As you start, it’s a little more bitter and then that rock candy melts away.”

Next, we turn to the CHARCUTERIE PLATTER ($23). It delights with balsamic onion cheddar, baby Brie wheels, blue cheese, baby gherkins, duck sausages, slices of prosciutto and capicola, lavashes, fig jam and grapes — plus dried mangoes, blueberries and cranberries, offering welcome bursts of juicy sweetness. The onion cheddar evokes French onion soup and the fig jam is scrumptious with lavashes.

Off to the side of our table, we can see chefs busily cooking in the open kitchen. A rack of firewood is piled in front of the massive wood-fired grill — regulated by two overhead wagon wheels instead of gas.

“You get that nice campfire taste on your steaks,” Cooper says.

That smoky flavor comes through in the 8-ounce center-cut filet of the SURF AND TURF (market price). Slightly charred, it’s mouthwatering with an herb demi-glace. The hefty broiled lobster tail with smoked paprika is succulent with squeezes of a half lemon and dips into clarified butter — so much so that my husband and I fight over it.

The PORK OSSO BUCCO ($39) is Cooper’s signature dish — an elevation of the Sunday roast he had growing up. The classic meal has evolved into a pork shank with microgreens, herb demi-glace, roasted carrots and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. It’s cooked sous vide for 12 hours — sealed in a hot water bath with salt and pepper — then flash-fried, giving it a delectably crispy exterior and juicy interior. The fall-off-the-bone dish stuns as it arrives taller than our water glasses.

“Being sealed in the bag, all the fat kind of cooks into the pork, and it gets very tender,” says senior general manager Tim Swan. “A couple of regulars — that’s all they have.”

A meal this indulgent needs a decadent ending, and it comes with a heavenly RED VELVET CHEESECAKE ($12). Two New York-style cheesecake layers sandwich red velvet cheesecake in a crunchy chocolate crust.

Artfully surrounded by a swirl of raspberry puree, the cheesecake also comes with whipped cream, raspberries and a marbled white and dark chocolate triangle garnish. The BONBONS AND BUCKEYES plate ($11) complements the cheesecake well — it has the same garnishes but adds buckeyes, chocolate truffles from Northfield’s Cake and Candy Center and chocolate-covered espresso beans. A to-go box of buckeyes and locally made F-bomb white cream-centered chocolate cake balls adds a sweet ending to the lavish night.

Although it boasts the white tablecloths and attentive servers of fine dining establishments, Valley’s Edge has no stuffy dress code. Anyone looking to make their dinner out an experience is welcome, and there’s plenty more within footsteps to complete your memorable evening.

“Whether you are gambling, going to a show or gonna go over to the sportsbook, it’s an entire night out without moving the car,” Swan says. “It creates extra energy and excitement.”

Ohio’s own Jackie O’s is making big moves. Not only has the Athens-based brewery and pub brought back crowd favorite See Foam — a hazy India pale ale — it’s also added it to its year-round lineup.

Ohio University graduate Art Oestrike purchased Athens staple O’Hooley’s in 2005, later transforming it into Jackie O’s BrewPub — named in honor of his late mother, Jackie. The pub began brewing beer in 2007.

Still Superb Alcohol-removed wines satisfy.

With the new year still fresh, those in the wine industry have seen an increase in interest in nonalcoholic — or dealcoholized — wines. Whether the trend is due to resolutions, health kicks or personal taste, the driest wines on the market are now on the rise. But not all nonalcoholic vino is made the same: There are three primary ways to remove alcohol from wine.

Vacuum Distillation: In this method, fermented wine is placed into a vacuum and heated to between 70 and 95 degrees. This high temperature allows the wine to boil, removing the alcohol but allowing for the preservation of the wine’s taste and aroma.

After the process, grape juice can be added to adjust the profile and flavor if necessary.

Spinning Cone Method: For this option, wine is placed into a column of cones in a centrifuge. The wine is spun at a high speed that separates the liquid into thin layers.

Then, nitrogen gas is added. It removes the flavors and other components, leaving behind only water and alcohol. Finally, the cones are spun again, and the water is added back in.

Reverse Osmosis: This process forces the fermented wine through filters at a high pressure. Once filtration is complete, two mixtures remain: highly concentrated wine without alcohol and a mixture of water and alcohol. The alcohol-water mixture is boiled to remove the remaining alcohol, and the water is then added back into the alcoholremoved wine.

Though these methods are effective, trace amounts of alcohol may still be present.

This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and of course physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists who we have missed that they feel should be included in our list.

Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged.

The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decisions.

Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.

Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

STEAM SHIP Oozing with color and texture, foodthemed slime offers an ooeygooey good time for kids who love science — and making messes.

Your child can climb aboard the S.S. Slimetopia at the Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron with Challenge Island’s Slimetopia 3: Slime Chefs on Deck camp. Running from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 29 to Aug. 2, it incorporates science concepts while campers mix up slime.

“They have a hoot. They just love slime,” says Anne Vaughan, the owner of Challenge Island for Summit and

Medina counties. “It’s a great way to teach kids about chemistry and polymers.”

Slimetopia’s cruise ship theme helps first through eighth graders learn about different parts of the world, discovering various cultures and creating squishy slime based on food from diverse destinations.

The slime itself isn’t edible — but foodthemed versions such as Belgian waffle, made by combining scents and textures, leave campers hungry to cook up more.

young chefs mix up ingredients such as glue, contact lens solution and food coloring to craft a fluffy “bun” — as well as an oozing brown slime to resemble the meat and colored slime to mimic condiments.

Previously, campers created a coffee slime using flavoring to achieve a rich scent and coffee beans for texture. They then placed the creation in a cup, topping it with shaving cream to stand in for whipped cream.

“It’s educational without the kids really knowing that it’s educational,” Vaughan says. “They are just having fun, but they’re learning along the way.”

Campers also engage in other science, technology, engineering, art and math activities — such as making a marble run. Designing, building and testing their track activates valuable critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These lessons also teach kids about team-building and communication.

As Challenge Island’s best-selling camp, Slimetopia offers its participants a unique opportunity to learn about the world, grasp STEAM concepts and become experts in “slimeology” — leaving little chefs with fond memories of cruising the seven seas.

EDUCATION To perform a needle, an equestrian vaulter extends their leg in the air while standing on a horse as it trots, in a circle, to the rhythm of music.

The sport, which combines gymnastics and dance on the back of a moving horse, requires great skill and synchronization. It can be rewarding, and Pegasus Farm in Hartville is helping future vaulters ages 6 to 18 learn the challenging sport. Its equestrian vaulting summer camp, from 9 a.m. to noon June 24 to 28, requires no experience and draws participants for myriad reasons.

“Often there’s a love of horses involved,” says Audre Manners, the equestrian administrative director at Pegasus Farm. “Some of them have done some gymnastics.”

The camp is directed by two coaches with level three Certified Horsemanship Association certifications. Campers perform warmups, practice moves, mount barrels and come up with freestyle movements. They also learn positions, such as basic sitting and standing, as well as more intricate moves on a barrel taking the place of a horse. Campers learn through trial and error.

“It’s something new, so it’s out of their comfort zone,” Manners says. “It’s OK to take risks and not succeed. There’s always room to keep trying.”

Once a student feels ready, they move on to the trained vaulting horse — whose back is covered in a thick pad and a special piece of tack called a vaulting surcingle. The horse trots in a circular motion while attached to a lunge line, with someone in the center of the circle holding the line and giving cues to the animal. This provides stability for the vaulters.

By the end of the camp, students create freestyle routines to perform for their families — demonstrating their new skills with showstopping moves like the flag, a position created by kneeling on the horse with the opposite arm and leg extended. Some love the high-energy sport so much that they join the farm’s recreational team.

“It’s amazing the amount of growth that happened in their knowledge base and their confidence in that short time,” Manners says.

IMAGINE THIS Kids can delve deep into a world of imagination at the city of Green’s Fantasyland camp June 17 to 21.

Campers ages 7 to 12 use pure creativity to engage in several activities that require them to activate their sense of innovation — such as using common ingredients like jelly and chocolate sauce to dream up a new food.

“We say, Come up with something fun that doesn’t exist,” says camp director Matt Kress.

“It’s trying to have them be creative, think outside the box and use their imagination.”

The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. day camp features morning and afternoon activities, lunch and breaks to play on the park’s splash pad and playground. Expect a pop culture-themed day where kids can make fan art of their favorite movie or TV show character through drawing, painting and more. Previously, campers dressed in gear related to a certain era (such as a hippie costume for the ‘60s or ‘70s) to learn about it and imagine they were back in time.

“They would learn something they didn’t understand or know that happened during that time or what was popular,” Kress says.

“The next day, they’d come in and say, I was telling my grandpa what we did. He was saying he would do that when he was a kid.”

Students also watch a movie and complete a related activity. In the past, campers watched “Sonic the Hedgehog,” forming teams to race around the park. Pretending to be the speedy blue hedgehog from the film, they worked together to collect hidden gold rings. This type of group approach helps kids learn about teamwork and forge new friendships.

“They can let other people get to know them and what they’re interested in, and hopefully make some friendships and bond over those shared interests,” Kress says.

Fantasyland camp not only allows kids to experience current and past entertainment — it encourages them to make their own fun.

Levity helped those living through the Great Depression. These women found it performing in downtown Akron’s Billy Sells Circus in 1938. Under the direction of Billy Bahnsen “Sells,” the show — with its trucks and billowing tent — featured everything from bears on leashes and stubborn donkeys to ragtag clowns and trick riders. Though no caged lions roll through today, Akronites can capture the three-ring magic with performers like local strongman Mark Burnett, who holds a world record for frying pan bending. Donning kilts and a handlebar mustache, his persona recalls the golden age of sideshows. For those who prefer the flashier, Kent-based entertainer Kate Starks performs with hoops and fire. The circus may not be in town, but there are plenty of local spectacles to witness.
