Do you need an attitude adjustment?

My friend Bob Shell has started a discussion group based on the “Three Principles,” (The “Three Principles” of Mind, Consciousness and Thought were first articulated by Sydney Banks, a 9th-grade educated welder, born in Scotland, living in British Columbia, Canada in the early 1970s.)

It is a philosophy, which teaches attitude adjustment and has changed many lives for the better. If you have read any of Albert Ellis’ works about Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, which he developed in 1955, you will also understand the basic concept of attitude. (My favorite he wrote in 1988 is “How to Stubbornly Refuse to Make Yourself Miserable About Anything: Yes, Anything.”) >> I talk about attitude because this winter has been especially hard on my attitude. It’s “too damn cold.” As I write this, the temperature outside has been hovering around 10 degrees all day as it has been since January 1. Even those who really enjoy winter and winter activities can’t because its “too damn cold.” You like to ski? “A pox on your house!” winter shouts back. All of the ski resorts in the area, and by area I mean, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York states, have closed their ski facilities because, again, it’s “too damn cold.”

Last winter was just as cold, but my friend, J.R. and I got away in the middle of it to play some golf in South Carolina. We’d do the same this winter, but the whole of the eastern half of the country is “too damn cold.” By “too damn cold,” I mean too cold in which to play golf and I am a hearty golfer. The last round I played in 2014 was in November at Firestone 9, where it was 39 degrees by the time we tapped our putts into the last hole. I’ve played golf in Florida in shorts when it was 41 degrees, though it did warm up that day. This winter has left me frustrated, short tempered, lazy and a complainer of everything. That’s not usually me.

There used to be a monograph above my desk entitled “Attitude.” It was attributed to Charles Swindoll, president of Dallas Theological Seminary and the author of several inspirational books. I think it addresses what many of us are going through this winter. It read: “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude is more than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important

than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a country, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past; we cannot change the fact that other people will act in a certain way; we cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitude.”

I’ve been stuck in a rut this winter. I’m not getting to all of the projects that I had saved for just this occasion. In fact, I have procrastinated writing this column for so long that it is the last piece to go into the March issue before we upload it to the printer. I am writing about attitude because I know mine has been so off-kilter. This piece is my therapy to get me up and going again. Spring is almost here, crocus will soon be poking up from the snow and the first robin can’t be far behind. Thank you for letting me vent.

You Cannot Control Chaos / But just watch this dad try /

I could hear them, their tinny voices echoing in the distance, but all I saw was a blank, snow-covered forest floor. My children wandered lost in the woods, and somehow I was expected to be okay with this.

I have control issues.

Anyone who knows me will undoubtedly nod in agreement. I like things to occur according to familiar and certain terms; as long as a situation plays out within the comfy confines of prescribed parameters, I can portray myself as a laid-back, gowith-the-flow kind of guy.

One step over the line in any direction, however, invites panic into the mix.

My control issues are diametrically opposed to the way I view the human condition: I believe randomness and chaos are the only constants that rule us as we, scrambling around on our little blue dot, hurl through the cosmos.

The only philosophical ideal that's ever made any sense to me is existentialism, which suggests attempts to impose order are absurd, ultimately doomed, conceits. And yet, I expend most of my energy trying to wrangle every day's moments into the speciallybuilt paddock of my, admittedly fantastical, control.

I remember, as a child, coming home from school to the greetings of my neighborhood friends, hopping on my BMX and trailing these chums around the subdivision. Sometimes we'd end up in the woods, swinging across dried-out creek beds on creaking vines and testing the feel of curse words on our tongues, their sharp, short vowels like knives poking from our hairless lips. Other times, we'd end up in random kids' yards, playing basketball or filing into the living room for an illicit viewing of the extended “Thriller” video on VHS. I never encountered trouble, the occasional angry dog or suspicious character aside, but had I run afoul of danger, my parents, blocks away in our home, would have been powerless to affect the moment.

Novelist Michael Chabon refers to this phenomenon as the “lost wilderness of childhood” in his book,

“Manhood for Amateurs.” He notes countless statistics and studies exist stating our children are in no more danger of abduction now than our younger selves were when navigating the previous century's streets, but he, like myself, freezes up the moment one of his kids slips out of sight.

Chabon tells a story of moving into his house to learn that the children living two doors away on each side — two kids with three houses between them — had never met. This seems incomprehensible, but I get it — my kids have never said “boo” to our next-door neighbors, never set foot

in our four acres of woods without a parent tightly clutching their blood-strangled fingers.

I want my kids to wander in the woods unaccompanied. I want them to play basketball with the kids two doors down. I understand that the day is just a mélange of random, unrelated events, and my children are, statistically at least, in as much danger sitting in the living room as out walking the neighborhood.

When my eldest was born, I told my wife I wished for her to one day climb a tree with a book tucked under her arm, for her to spend hours reading with her back nestled against the craggly bark of a hardwood trunk. Then last month, completely unbidden, my now 10-year-old daughter did just that, scaling the sturdy walnut just outside our dining room window with a tome pressed against her puffy coat. I left the room in a panic, the joy of the moment totally overshadowed by the mental image of her falling four feet to the ground below.

Parenthood is maddeningly bilateral.

So here I am, standing on the hill above, scanning the woods frantically for any sign of my children and the group they wander with. It's a birthday party at their friends' house, and the kids are on a fantasy novel-themed adventure in the forest below. Word's gotten back that the group is “lost,” though the hosting adults are fully at ease with the situation — I am expected to be at ease too, despite every nerve in my body alighting with a message to “run, find, protect.” And, eventually, the group of kids stumbled back into view, cheeks reddened with cold, feet numbed with the seeping chill. They were laughing and ready for cake; I was ready for a stiff drink and a nap.

When the party was over and my family was safely back in our danger-proofed living room, my children excitedly recounted the details of their forest adventure, all agreeing it was the “best party ever.” Stiff drink in hand, sleep on the horizon, I smiled and resolved to let them wander more, climb more, do more.

/ Founder, MacConmara Academy of Irish Dance / Irish step dance runs through Teresa Buck’s veins.

Buck, who was born and raised in the Portage Lakes area, comes from a long line of people who have a great appreciation for Irish tradition.

Her grandmother, Kay McNamara-Seeman, emigrated from Ireland to New York where she met her husband. Upon relocating to Akron, she worked at O’Neil’s as an elevator operator, and her husband was an Akron police officer. They enrolled their children in Irish dance classes, and since then, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren have all participated in Irish dance and cultural events.

Buck, the founder of MacConmara Academy of Irish Dance in Akron and Stow, began Irish dancing at age 5, and by the time she was 16, she was teaching Irish dance and competing internationally.

“My first memory of Irish dance was performing in the Songs of Ireland show at the Akron Civic Theatre with my aunt, Irene Uhalley, who sang with the band, Irene and the Irishmen,” she says. “ … I was embraced by Akron’s Irish community at a young age while attending dance classes at the Hibernian Club and have continued to support them to this day. Akron has been blessed with such a deeprooted Irish culture producing many musical artists and performers.”

Do you have to be Irish to be a good Irish dancer?

TB: When I was younger, most people dancing were from an Irish decent. Ever since “Riverdance” and “Lord of the Dance” came onto the scene, Irish dance has evolved, embracing students from all races and cultures.

Does a shot of Irish whiskey help?

TB: Besides driving a car, when does a shot of Irish whiskey hurt?

Do you think television dance shows accurately represent the competition experience?

If you were on a desert island, what three CDs would you take along, and why?

TB: Some of the reality dance shows seem to portray both dance parents and teachers in a negative light. Irish step dancing differs from other forms of dance because we are our own little community, supporting each other in dance and non-dance events alike.

TB: I would like to have an Enya CD for relaxation, a Carrie Underwood CD because I love to listen to country music, and an Irish CD, such as my aunt’s CD, to remind me of my home and heritage.

What are the health benefits of Irish dance?

TB: I will start my day at an Irish Mass at the Hibernian Club at 9 a.m. and then go home to our annual Irish-coffee-andbreakfast party that my husband and I have been hosting at our house for the past six years.

TB: Irish dance is a demanding cardiovascular workout requiring coordination, balance and stamina, but it’s the most enjoyable way I have found to get in a workout.

What’s the hardest part and the most rewarding part about teaching kids?

TB: Today’s demands on children and young adults with school work and extracurricular activities make it difficult for children and parents to juggle and prioritize their commitments. It makes it all worth it, when I see children excited to come to dance class or when I see them running up to me at a dance competition with their medals.

What inspires you to teach a new generation of Irish dancers?

TB: It is my goal to teach Irish dance to the best of each child’s ability … most importantly, to make it a wonderful and memorable experience while cultivating a love of Irish culture and dance. Irish dancing has been a part of my family my entire life. I want children to enjoy coming to classes, going to competitions and giving performances, just as I did growing up.

The skills taught in Irish dance go beyond dance steps and have been proven to be invaluable many years later to so many people. Lasting friendships are formed among students, parents and teachers, as well as memorable experiences.

If I weren’t the founder of this dance academy, I’d be …

TB: A preschool or elementary school teacher. I loved being the preschool director and teacher at St. Mark’s in Brunswick before starting my own academy.

After spending time with family and friends, we caravan to all of Akron’s popular St. Patrick’s Day festivities, including the Barley House, the Hibernian Club and Legends Sports Pub and Grille. We love listening to all the local Irish bands, such as The Shaffer Brothers, Callahan and O’Connor, Fergie and the Bog Dogs, and a few more.

All of our stops include the MacConmara dancers entertaining the crowds with their amazing talent. This is definitely the busiest day for my dancers, but it’s the most fun. We will be performing throughout March at various locations in Akron and the surrounding areas.

What’s next for you and your students?

TB: We have two girls competing at the World Championships in Montreal this April and five students going to the North American Championships this July in Rhode Island.

In May, we will be holding a competition, “The Akron Feis,” with more than 1,000 competitors at the Summit County Fairgrounds. It’s one of the longest-running feiseanna (competitions) in North America. Check out our website, www. macconmaraacademy.com, for an updated schedule.

50 Years of Memories

/ Summit Metro Parks celebrates Nature Realm’s golden anniversary. / Gardens, trails, nature programs and chickadees that will literally eat from your hand – all of these and more have made F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm a Summit County destination for generations.

The beloved park, at 1828 Smith Road in Akron, turns 50 this year.

“The park, its facilities and the staff continue to help people enjoy the Metro Parks through the interpretation of local history and nature,” says Mike Greene.

Greene, a Summit Metro Parks naturalist for 24 years, frequently visited the 104-acre sanctuary as a child. “I loved the nature center and the turtles in the pond,” he recalls. “My experiences there definitely reinforced my interest in the natural world.”

A New Park The Nature Realm began in 1964, when Summit Metro Parks acquired farmland to host history and nature programs led by then-naturalist (now longtime volunteer) Bert Szabo. At the time, the property included a barn, hayfields, a pond (today’s Seneca Pond) and a small pine tree plot.

Greene says the barn was used as a nature classroom, and the nearby farmhouse was adapted as a nature center, filled with exhibits designed and built in the basement by Szabo.

Several trails were constructed, including the looping Seneca Trail. Cherry Lane Trail is also original, but it was first called Erie Trail.

By the mid-1970s, as visitation continued to increase, park staff began recognizing the need for a new, larger building. Meanwhile, additional changes were being made to the grounds, including the introduction of an arboretum and a rock and herb garden, both designed with special considerations given to people with different abilities. The Arboretum was created on what had been the old hayfields using soil from the digging of the irrigation pond, known today as Echo Pond.

The Rock and Herb Garden was constructed to encourage people to touch and smell plants with aromatic, culinary or medicinal properties.

In 1989, construction began on an underground building that would become the current Visitors’ Center. A year later, the brick farmhouse was razed, and the new building opened to the public in November 1991, creating another spike in visitation. Over time, the exhibits aged, and a renovation was planned.

Modern ‘Makeover’ The building was closed in December 2008, and over the next 15 months, new exhibits were designed, fabricated and installed.

Crews also rebuilt the parking lot, added a new welcome kiosk,

rerouted the entrance walkway and made it more accessible.

Wetlands were created along the walkway to collect runoff, and a program deck overlooking Seneca Pond was added. Numerous green features were included, and the project achieved LEEDcertified “Platinum” status, making it one of the most energy efficient buildings in the state. The new-look Visitors’ Center reopened in spring 2010.

removed – done in 2014 to repair leaks – the new roof design will protect the building for many years to come, and it will give the center a sleek, more modern appearance.

Regular center hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is always free. The park includes the 10,000-square-foot Visitors’ Center with a gift shop, several gardens, observation decks, two ponds, hiking trails and a tall-grass prairie.

A Rich History Naturalist Mike Greene says Akron’s Smith Road started as an important east-west American Indian trail, connecting Pittsburgh to Sandusky and beyond. Pioneer settler Martin Smith widened it around 1800 so he could drive his ox teams over it, and it was an important military road in the War of 1812, when men – under the command of General Elijah Wadsworth – were stationed nearby at what would become Sand Run Metro Park.

“Wadsworth’s son, Frederick, served under his father’s command and later owned part of the Nature Realm property,” from the 1830s to the 1860s, Greene says. Frederick served as the Summit County treasurer and, later, the mayor of Akron.

From 1920 to 1948, F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., owned the land.

Seiberling was one of the park district’s first commissioners, and he donated more than 400 acres to help establish Sand Run. The Nature Realm is named in Seiberling’s honor.

Goodwill Opens First Boutique In January Goodwill Industries, serving Summit, Portage, Medina, Ashland and Richland counties, opened its first boutique in Kent, Ohio. The new store is called blue, a Goodwill Boutique. The boutique is a first-of-its kind store for this area. It features higher-end clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories, primarily for women, all at a fraction of retail prices.

The boutique concept is another type of shopping experience the agency can offer to the area. Whether shopping or donating to Goodwill, it all supports the mission of helping individuals prepare for, find and retain employment.

The store will be holding an event to celebrate its love of fashion with the community on Saturday, April 11, 2015. The event will include a fashion show and outfit styling advice from area blogger, Dina Younis of Dina’s Days. In addition, customers will have the chance to win gift cards as their skills are put to the test in a style challenge contest.

Catalyst for Creation Four locals bring a new energy to Akron

Communities change when people work to make a difference. As Akron has shifted into a post-industrial city, its population has declined. But some locals who remain want to change the city for the better.

A new energy, a catalyst for creative and innovative thinking, has settled into Akron.

Akronlife met with four locals working to make positive changes in our community.

From improving transportation and neighborhood revitalization, to causing quiet disruptions in people’s lives through creative interventions, to educating the city’s youth in innovative ways, these people all hope to create a better Akron.

Traci Buckner

Traci Buckner is moving the community forward through the education of its children.

Buckner is the director of specialty programs in Akron Public Schools. Previously, she was the founding instructional leader of the National Inventors Hall of Fame School, Center for STEM Learning.

Prior to getting into education, Buckner studied marketing and communication at The Ohio State University and then entered the business world.

“I liked the challenge of business and I liked the rewards in that area, but I felt I wanted to impact lives,” Buckner says. “I really had good mentors along the way growing up and wanted to be able to be that for someone else.”

Buckner went to John Carroll University for an intense, one-year program. She earned her master’s degree in education and her teaching certificate.

At the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Buckner promoted the vision of creative and inventive thinking that will prepare students for the workforce.

“On a day-to-day basis, what we do in the workforce is we solve problems. We’re problem solvers, and that’s an asset that you can’t take away from people if they know how to think of multiple options,” Buckner says. “There’s never just one answer or one way to do something, so it’s important to show them that skill because it will help them to be successful in all walks of life, no matter what area.”

Today, Buckner’s job includes expanding STEM opportunities across the district so that more families and students can learn in this way.

Buckner says one thing she likes about Akron is that people still want to enhance their city.

“I like that we’re not satisfied with what we have,” Buckner says. “While we’ve got it really good, we want to make it better.”

Buckner thinks one way the city can be made better is through the development of a place for children to be entrepreneurs in the community, a place that exposes them to new ideas and thoughts.

“Kids are fearless, and I think that we’ve got to take advantage of that. They have so many wonderful ideas that they just need to be nurtured,” Buckner says.

The first STEM class of Akron Public Schools will graduate in 2016, and Buckner is excited to see where the students end up.

For her, she plans on continuing to expand opportunities for Akron’s children.

“I want to be a person that doesn’t just sit by and wait for things to become better or what we want it to be. I want to be a creator,” Buckner says. “And I feel I am a creator, a creative thinker. I’m a risk taker. I’m not afraid to try new things. And I think that’s important. I think if there was anything I would want to do, it is just model that for my kids.”

Born and raised in Akron, Jason Segedy returned after graduate school in North Carolina because he felt he could serve the city.

Currently, AMATS is working on projects like promoting cycling and analyzing roads to see if car lanes can be repurposed as bike lanes.

Segedy is currently the director of the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS), a metropolitan planning organization focused on regional transportation planning.

But places and neighborhoods have been one of his primary interests.

Because Akron is home, Segedy would like to see the city grow again.

Through rebuilding neighborhoods, building new housing and attracting younger people looking for an urban living experience, Segedy thinks it can happen.

Segedy spends his free time in the arena of community development, working to move Akron forward.

“I live here in Akron, and it will always be home,” Segedy says. “I’ve been working a lot with younger leaders to try to get people to look at the community with fresh eyes.”

Segedy blogs about the community, his observations and tries to connect people with similar ideas. He also participates in neighborhood tours through Akron2Akron - a group that is trying to establish new ways of discovering the city.

With his transportation work, Segedy tries to pay attention to the social and community aspect of travel and what people are doing at points A and B of their trips.

“I think of getting a sense of community and a closer knit feeling, where people really have an identity with a place. I think there really is a place for neighborhood-based planning where you can live in a community and walk to a lot of things that you need to go to,” Segedy says.

“It’s not easy work, I mean that no one has a blueprint for how you do that,” Segedy says. “Every neighborhood is different, every community is different, but I really do believe if we work together — public sector, private sector, nonprofits, regular people — we can figure out how to get our city to grow again.”

Segedy tries to raise awareness for what the city could be and hopes Akron will be a thriving community in the future.

“I see my job as a catalyst in a lot of ways, to raise issues, to try to not just talk but help where I can,” Segedy says. “But also there are a lot of people that know more about a lot of things than I do, and so my job isn’t necessarily to try to fix everything myself — which I would fail miserably at, I think — but to help where I can, to raise awareness, to bring people together.”

According to the group’s Facebook page, “Walking tours are a great way to learn about neighborhoods in our city, engage in meaningful dialogue, meet new friends and think big about how to utilize space in Akron.

The tours typically last one hour and end at a neighborhood establishment where participants have the opportunity to network.”

Jason Segedy says these tours are a good way for people to see the city from a fresh perspective.

Segedy added that social media and technology make it easier to connect with others, but people don’t always take the next step.

“I think what makes some of our efforts unique with Akron2Akron is (that) we meet and we try to do things, so it’s not just Facebook conversations, but face-to-face interactions,” Segedy says.

University of Akron student David Swirsky and local artist Megan Shane saw a need for something that would allow Akronites to come together in a neutral zone to communicate — something that rarely happens in today’s hectic world.

Swirsky and Shane hope to establish a permanent headquarters for the league where they can store materials, continue to expand their work and social networks in the community. Swirsky says their leadership style is linking people and resources together.

They are the co-founders of Akron’s chapter of the League of Creative Interventionists, a group that catalyzes connections between people of diverse communities that would otherwise never meet. The group’s tagline is “building community through creativity.”

Swirsky has noticed a new energy in Akron from emerging leaders.

Swirsky and Shane heard Hunter Franks, the founder of the League of Creative Interventionists, speak at the Akron Art Museum in August. They were both excited about the creative challenge it presented and how a group like this could create new social networks in the Akron community.

For Shane, she says one reason she is passionate about investing time and energy into Akron is her family history.

With a “cardboard and shoestring budget” the league had its first intervention in September. They set up a color play space, designed to get people expressing and reflecting, during the Porch Rokr Festival in Highland Square.

Swirsky says the group tries to engage people in a shared experience in a public space. The league meets twice a month — once to brainstorm ideas for that month’s themed action and again to carry out the spontaneous intervention.

Shane describes the actions of the group as an intervention. They point out people’s previous actions and inactions that are alienating and not engaging others around them.

“I think there’s a grit, that people want to stick it out. It’s like the underdog feeling that people want to succeed,” Swirsky says. “Whether it’s having a big career or just being a leader in your community, and you might not even make that much money, but you’re making a huge difference and that’s really important to me.”

“So often people grow up, and they hate their town. They just want to move to where something is already established and amazing,” Shane says. “Well, when everyone does that, that amazing place, it just dies. It falls apart. And then what happens to their home is it never moves forward. The League of Creative Interventionists The League of Creative Interventionists was founded by Hunter Franks, a San Francisco-based artist, in February of 2014.

Franks founded the league with the hope of catalyzing connections between different social groups through the creation of spontaneous creative spaces centered around a different theme, such as color, fear, gratitude or change, each month.

The league has been spreading worldwide and is already established in 11 cities.

David Swirsky and Megan Shane, the co-founders of Akron’s chapter of the league, say people interested in joining the league can check out the group’s Facebook page.

Swirsky says new people attend each meeting, and the group continues to grow.

“My cheeks hurt after most meetings from smiling so much,” Shane says.

SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and of course physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists who we have missed that they feel should be included in our list.

Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees.

Successful Endodontist and Ten-Year Cancer Survivor Becomes Philanthropist

To describe Dr. Ronald Wolf as an over-achiever might be an understatement. His 18-hour days are busy leading his team at Summit Endodontic Specialists to provide the best endodontic treatment in the region, spending time with his family and raising money for cancer research.

A graduate of Case Western Reserve University and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, Dr. Wolf has been practicing dentistry for 21 years. He specializes in root canal care and dedicates himself to treating teeth that require special attention. In addition to routine and complicated endodontic care, Dr. Wolf also provides microsurgical endodontics, endodontic retreatment, diagnosis of complex tooth pain and treatment of traumatic tooth injuries. The Summit Endodontic Specialists team uses several proven techniques and state-of-the-art technology, including sonic and ultrasonic instrumentation, surgical operating microscopes and digital radiography, each of which helps improve efficiency and comfort for the patient during the treatment process.

Now Dr. Wolf and Karen have four children: R.J. was born in 2005, and triplets Olivia, Addison and Dylan were born in 2009.

Dr. Wolf is grateful to the medical community and the research behind the treatment that saved his life. He is active in raising money for more research and cures of blood cancers. Navigating tax season / Avoid common tax return mistakes with 5 quick tips /

That dreaded time of year is here again. Tax season. Each spring, mountains of paperwork and forms confuse and stress taxpayers all over the country.

Melanie McCoskey, Ph.D., CPA, is an associate professor of tax at the GW Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron. She says that this is a nervous time for many. “It’s the nature of the beast – the tax law is voluminous and confusing and we are afraid of making a mistake,” says McCoskey.

With care however, mistakes can be avoided. There are five major mistakes she sees people make when filing taxes – not including all of their information, improper filing status, incorrectly reporting names and social security numbers, not accounting for life changes and overstating deductions.

1 / Not including all the facts It is important to make sure you have all of your updated information when you are filing your taxes. “This year, you may have engaged in a transaction that you usually don’t have, such as a sale of stock or a distribution from a retirement plan,” says McCoskey. Paperwork for these transactions should be provided to you by the broker or party involved and needs to be included on your tax return. Taxpayers should also include any additional income they made that year on their return. “If you receive additional income, even in the form of cash, that additional income must

That question strikes fear into the hearts of many, but for Tom Haught, president and founder of Sequoia Financial Group, making a plan is his business.

Instead of looking only at individual activities or services that a client needs, Haught and his team take what he calls a “planning approach.” Through this approach Haught isn’t just looking at a few single pieces of a larger puzzle, he is constructing the puzzle for the whole picture.

“We’re trying to put together an overall plan.

Clients become much more likely to accomplish their goals if they have a solid plan from the beginning,” says Haught.

Haught’s been in the business of making plans for the last 25 years, establishing Sequoia Financial Group in 1991.

Over the years the company has become a team, one that Haught says is important to helping clients reach their goals. “A lot of our industry is very individualistic,” says Haught.

“One of our goals from the beginning has been to develop a team that would work well together to help clients reach their goals.”

Sequoia Financial Group is also independent, with no proprietary products. “From our perspective, we think that our independent position puts us on the same side of the table with clients and helps them develop a plan that’s more aligned long-term with their goals and objectives,” says Haught.

Nine out of 10 clients come from referrals.

The planning process starts with gathering information. “The first fear is getting started and having to gather up all the information,”

says Haught. To help this process, Sequoia utilizes a partnership with a regional tax firm Cohen & Company. The partnership goes back 15 years.

“Many people have positive aspects of their financial life and negative aspects of their financial life. They don’t always want to share the negative aspects,” says Haught. That's where trust enters the equation. “I think establishing trust, earning trust, is the most critical component.”

With the creation of trust comes sharing of personal goals, both short- and long-term.

“Typically most people have goals related to children or family,” says Haught. Parents may start preparing for their child’s college education while they are in high school or in the crib. Once children are grown and the nest is empty, parents might focus on a retirement plan, or as Haught says, financial independence. “Some people like to call it retirement, we call it financial independence because a lot of people say they don’t ever really want to stop working, but they want to know that they can.”

Life doesn’t always fit perfectly into a plan.

However Haught’s team at Sequoia Financial Planning do their best to build trust with their clients. “I think trust is the most important component to our services. If clients trust you, then they’ll share with you what they’re trying to accomplish and generally we can help them accomplish that,” says Haught.

A Charitable Team Giving back to the community is important to Haught and his team.

They support a variety of local charities and the company matches employee donations up to a limit based on years of service. “We’re very excited about employees who want to put their time and their own resources into a charity and think it’s definitely a better way for us to allocate our charitable budget than just a couple of us sitting around deciding what’s best,” says Haught. One charity that garners a lot of support from the team is the Akron-Canton Foodbank. “Probably 30 or 40 of our people contribute to one event or another related to (the foodbank),” says Haught. The company also supports Breakthrough Schools, a program in inner-city Cleveland that aims to stop the cycle of poverty through education.

Shop Around - Get at least 3 written estimates based on the same specifications, materials and labor needed to complete the project so you can easily compare quotes. Don’t be afraid to question why certain items are priced higher than a competitor. You may find that the higher cost is worth the money or it’s an opportunity for you to source materials on your own. The price should be broken down as much as possible so you know where your funds are going. You’ll need an accurate estimate if you plan to take out a loan.

Check Referrals – Ask for referrals and actually call the homeowners to hear what their experience was with the contractor you’re hiring. Talk about whether or not the contrac-

Get It In Writing - A quality contractor will submit a formal quote or contract to the homeowner which should include all verbal promises and start/completion dates. Be sure to read and understand the contract before signing! Keep a signed copy for your records along with any warranty papers. If a contractor insists you have to sign immediately, find another contractor. After completion, the homeowner will be given a final invoice. If there have been any additions or changes, a revised proposal should always be part of the process, enabling the homeowner to keep track of expenses. Additionally ask if the contractor will provide a lien waiver (ensuring all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid for their work) upon completion of the job.

Down Payment - Depending upon the project, you may be required to pay a down payment for the work. A small electrical project may only require payment at the completion while a large kitchen remodel may require a deposit. A payment schedule should be part of the contract language. Typical down payments are 25 percent to 33 percent and may be necessary when products have to be ordered immediately. Never pay 100 percent of the costs up front. Remember the rule of thirds and follow it – pay one third at the start of the project, one third when work is 50 percent complete and the final third after completion.

Like any project, miscommunication between people can ruin the pleasure of a completed project. Setting appropriate expectations for how to effectively communicate with your contractor will be key to enjoying the end result. Setting the right tone from the beginning is important. Be clear in your expectations since even small miscommunications can leave a bad taste for the overall feeling of the project.

Be suspicious of a contractor who is going door-to-door to offer his services. It is better to deal only with people you have invited to come out to your home. 2 / Improper filing status Figuring out your filing status can confuse people when filing their taxes. McCoskey explained that married persons must select either married filing jointly or married filing separately. “In limited situations, where the spouses have not lived together for the last six months of the tax year and the spouse has a qualifying child living with him/her, that spouse can claim ‘head of household,’” says McCoskey.

3 / Incorrectly reporting names and numbers As with most forms, getting all of the names and numbers correct is vital. The names of taxpayers and dependents listed on the tax return must all be spelled exactly as appears on their social security cards. If any names or numbers do not match those listed on the

matching social security cards, the tax return will be rejected. If your name has changed because of marriage, divorce or adoption this year, but not yet with the Social Security Administration, McCoskey says to use your current social security information. After filing the tax return, you can change your name with the Social Security Administration and use the new name next year.

4 / Not accounting for life changes Life is constantly changing around us. This can be reflected on your tax return. Are your children growing up? “If they were age 17 at the end of the tax year, you will no longer be eligible for the Child Tax Credit, which is $1,000 per child,” says McCoskey. This could change your refund significantly and can be a big surprise for unaware taxpayers.

Do you have a child under 24 who is a fulltime college student? “If so, you can generally still claim them as dependents and you, not the student, can take advantage of the education credits, even if the student paid the expenses via loans,” says McCoskey.

5 / Overstating deductions Again it is important to have all of your facts straight when looking at deductions.

Deductions like the home office and charitable contributions deduction, require specific facts and proper documentation.

Preparing your returns Once the pitfalls to tax preparation have been pointed out, the next step is to decide how you want to prepare your return. “Tax return preparation software helps alleviate other potential problems on tax returns – the computational and mathematical errors that are sometimes made when a tax return is completed by hand,” says McCoskey. laneous itemized deduction. However, she says to keep in mind that the deduction applies to the year the software was purchased. For example, if you purchase software in January of 2015 to file your 2014 taxes, that purchase cannot be deducted until you file your 2015 taxes.

Another option is to hire a specialist. A specialist can help with more complicated returns, like ones with stock sales and pension distributions.

McCoskey however cautions people who use specialists for tax preparation to do their research. “Make sure the person is reputable. Some may fraudulently prepare your tax return to get a higher refund or use your identity for other purposes.” This can

Taxpayers in the Greater Akron Area have another option available to them this year for help filing their returns.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a free service that both provides experience for students at The University of Akron and aids the community in their tax preparation. McCoskey says that the program is beneficial for students because they work with real clients and real tax return preparation software.

Each return is completed by a student – undergraduate, master’s or law – and then reviewed by a tax professor.

VITA program The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program benefits members of the Greater Akron Area with an income limit of $53,000. The free program is being held in the College of Business Administration Building, room 106. Services are offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays during tax season (January 31 to April 11). The program’s AARP partnership site, located in Polsky Hall room 550n, is open on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. This portion of the program runs from February 11 to April 15. VITA has prepared about 550 returns on campus, according to McCoskey.

The free program could provide a big savings for community members as an alternative to paying for a specialist or purchasing a tax preparation software. "If each taxpayer paid $250 to have his/her tax return prepared, we have saved the taxpayers $125,000," says McCoskey.

“The summer slide is a euphemism many parents and educators discuss where students are perceived as losing some degree of academic skills during the months away from formal education,” says Erich Merkle, Ph.D. and school psychologist for Akron Public Schools. Merkle, also the president of the Ohio School Psychologists Association, explained that this slide is not easily measured.

The modern day summer break harkens back to a time when communities structured their educational calendars around crops. Children were needed to lend a helping hand on farms.

“Even though less than 3 percent of Americans today participate in agriculture, the historic vestiges to the summer calendar remain,” says Merkle.

So how do you keep children engaged during the summer? One option is camp. Available in many shapes and sizes, Merkle says that “summer camps provide a formalized set of experiences around a theme.” Going to camp is not limited to packing children off in cabins for weeks at a time though.

There are a variety of camps available for children to explore.

Whether your child is a brainiac or a daredevil, there are opportunities for them to learn and explore over the summer break.

Rebecca Lieb, Ph.D., ABPP, says that the routine provided by camps during summer is helpful for retention. Lieb is the director of the Early Childhood Assessment Clinic, the School Success Clinic and is a clinical psychologist at Akron Children’s 62

Hospital. “I think what’s nice about a lot of summer camps is that they do mimic the structure of school in some way. You get up, you have to go to this place where there’s a teacher or a counselor that’s kind of leading different activities.”

This routine allows children to enjoy the summer while still being engaged. “The nature of the camp itself, is not what may help to mitigate brain drain or summer slide, but instead simply having the opportunity to engage in various activities to refresh, rehearse, or advance prior knowledge and experiences,” says Merkle.

Rehearsal is a key component of any skill. A star tumbler may have all of the talent in the world, but without practicing their acrobatics over and over, they would fall flat on their face. Rehearsal provides confidence in one’s skills and once gained, confidence can ripple outwards into other parts of life.

Rhonda Richardson, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology in the Human Development and Family Studies program at Kent State University, says that rehearsal is needed to solidify learning.

“Summer camp keeps kids physically, mentally and socially active. Even if they’re not actively rehearsing specific academic skills, they are developing non-cognitive capacities (such as confidence, problem-solving, curiosity) that will benefit them in the school environment,” says Richardson. According to Richardson there are five “C’s” of positive development for

Each of these attributes can be gained during summer camp, Richardson says. “They learn to take some responsibility for themselves, to follow camp rules and to be respectful of adults and peers, all of which are character traits that will translate to other settings in a child’s life.”

When checking out area summer camps, it is important to involve the child in the process. “Children who are given a voice in the decision are likely to be more enthusiastic and confident when the time comes to go off to camp, and this can contribute to a more enjoyable camp experience for them,” says Richardson.

Strike up a conversation with your children to find out what kind of camp they would enjoy this summer. Would they like to create a short film with stopmotion animation? Would they like to master horseback riding? Would they like to be immersed in foreign language? “Let your child guide you in interest, expectations and types of factors when contemplating camp. A child who is an active 64

partner and engaged in selecting the camp will likely have a better experience than one exclusively chosen by a wellintended parent,” says Merkle. No matter what it is, the structure and activity of summer camp could help your child remain engaged throughout the summer, fighting the dreaded summer slide.

“Most of all though, remember, summer

When my condition became so bad I lost feeling in my legs, I learned to walk again. And when I wanted to work, I got a job. It’s a struggle everyday, but I still get up because work makes me feel that I’m reaching my goals, I’m part of a team and I get to give back to my family.

Cherry Tart Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines Winemaker Jayson Woodbridge is the driving force behind Cherry Tart wines. Cherry Tart wines are an example of his visionary winemaking from different AVA area’s in California. Several times a year he travels the world, making wines from Australia, Italy, Argentina and different area’s in California. One of his best known brands is Layer Cake and his Shiraz from Australia is a huge success.

Today, his creation of Cherry Tart Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is another success story. The Wine Spectator recently gave his Cherry Tart Pinot Noir a “Smart Buy” and a rating of 90 points.

Cherry Tart Pinot Noir The Cherry Tart Pinot Noir is produced from three different AVA’s (Rodgers Creek Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast, Alta Loma Vineyard in Monterey County and Los Alamos Vineyard in Santa Barbara). Jayson Woodbridge blends grapes for different flavor profiles from these three AVA’s to create his Cherry Tart Pinot Noir. He calls this his artisan micro winemaking approach to making redefined wines.

The tasting notes from the winery say that “the 2013 Cherry Tart Pinot Noir jumps from the glass with aromas of raspberry, nutmeg, sandalwood and light smokiness, lifted by a floral note. Winter Warmer Fest Saturday, March 7 Northeast Ohioans are counting down the days until spring after a brutally rough season. However, winter will rare its head one last time in the form of one of the most anticipated beer festivals of the year – Winter Warmer Fest.

On Saturday, March 7 from 2 to 6 p.m., Winter Warmer Fest will return to Windows on the River to celebrate its 9th year as arguably the best showcase of what Ohio has to offer the craft beer world. Windows on the River is located at 2000 Sycamore St, Cleveland, Ohio.

This year will see more than 40 all-Ohio breweries sampling their best batches of seasonals, limited brews, as well as staples from their impressive repertoires.
