Downtown Evolution

D

owntown Akron was not the place to be after dark 20 years ago. The streets were mostly empty, dark and foreboding. The only people on the

streets were the homeless, panhandlers, prostitutes and pensioners. Most of the store fronts on South Main Street were boarded up with only the peep show theater, the Peanut Shoppe, a couple of blue collar bars and The Downtown Adult Cinema open for business. Then things began to slowly change.

First the block that housed the McCrory’s five and dime, the Downtown Adult Cinema and some other local shops was torn down to make way for the new Canal Park baseball stadium, which opened in 1997. With the opening of Canal Park came a slew of upscale bars and restaurants, which have not only attracted the baseball crowd but young and old who want to socialize and have a good time. Then historic district developer Tony Troppe leased space for the Jacob Good restaurant in the Everett Building at the corner of Main and Market Streets. Big City Chophouse (now just The Chophouse) later took Jacob Good’s place, and Crave opened next door in another Troppe building. In the Northside District, we have Luigi’s,

which has been around since 1949, as well as Chrissy Hynde’s VegiTerranean restaurant, housed in the newly built Northside condos, and the Northside blues bar.

So, over these 20 years the north end of Main Street anchored by Luigi’s, has connected to the south end of Main Street with restaurants, bars, the new library, the new Akron Art Museum, the Peanut Shoppe, the Civic Theatre, Lock 3, and other attractions, until, by golly, we have a real entertainment district rivaling those in many much bigger cities. There is even a hookah bar on the street (whatever that is), which I don’t think you’ll find in many other towns.

This leads me to my point: This issue is devoted to downtown Akron. You can look at METRO RTA in a new light, learn about four local bartenders and more. If you haven’t been downtown lately, by all means, give it a try. I think you’ll be very entertained.

Here is a photo of Virginia Flemm sitting with a copy of Akron Life & Leisure in front of her favorite Akron landmark, the 1870 one-room schoolhouse, now named Preservation House and managed for rentals by Progress Through Preservation. She attended here in 1926 as a first grader when she was 5 years old. The building is located on the western edge of the Judith Bear Isroff Park at White Pond Drive and West Market Street in Akron.

We always like to see pictures in your magazine of people who took Akron Life & Leisure on their trip. So, I have included here a couple pictures of our trip to Mali, Africa with a group called African Sky. Linda and Jim Peshina were part of a group of 10 going from Akron to several villages in Mali, Africa, with African Sky Executive Director Dr. Scott Lacy. Here is a photo of the group holding a copy of Akron Life & Leisure in the village of Dissan where the non-profit organization has built a school.

he 107th Charity Ball, with a Forest Enchantment theme, was held at Goodyear Hall on Dec. 29, 2009 with 940 guests in attendance. Presented by the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital, the event featured 42 debutantes whose parents and/or grandparents made a significant volunteer contribution to the community.

Proceeds benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. For this year’s service project, debutantes provided 75 new stuffed animals for the plush toy bin in the hospital’s volunteer department, and they also gave Project Linus 25 finished, handmade blankets and 260 skeins of yarn for volunteers to make additional blankets for the patients.

Sugartown Express

he 34th Annual Sugartown Express was held Friday, Jan. 22 at the Akron/Fairlawn Hilton. The fundraising event featured raff les, music, entertainment and healthy snacks, including sugarfree desserts. Proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association.

n Feb. 2, the NARI NEO Contractor of the Year awards were given in recognition of outstanding remodeling projects in multiple categories. Competing projects were completed between July 1, 2008 to Nov. 30, 2009. Winners were selected based on each entrant’s “before and after” photography and project description. Judging was based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.

Free Downtown Lunch Trolleys

I

n case you didn’t notice, the Downtown Lunch Trolleys came back last month, and continue to run on Fridays in March.

From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Friday, the free trolleys take downtown workers, residents, students and visitors to their favorite downtown restaurants for lunch. The trolleys run on a continuous loop up and down Main Street from VegiTerranean on the north end to Spaghetti Warehouse on the south end.

Nature Realm Reopens

Hike & Breakfast

The Seiberling Nature Realm reopens this month after being closed for renovations since November 2008. What’s changed? A new welcome kiosk will make the property easier to navigate for first-time visitors. The steep entryway has been regraded for easier accessibility. A beautiful new program deck with a fireplace has been added to the back of the Visitors’ Center. Inside exhibits (more than 20 years old) have been revamped and will change out seasonally. Solar panels, rain barrels and porous pavement in the parking area are among the green features of the redesign.

Hike the transformed grounds and get behind-the-scenes insights into the Metro Park’s green decisions. After the hike, enjoy breakfast and tour the building. (Participants are asked to contribute to the morning feast. Register beginning March 11 at 330-865-8065.)

A series of special events is planned as part of the Nature Realm’s grand reopening weekend. Here’s a look at what’s happening there:

Stop by to visit and tour the Center and grounds. Children can make a take-home craft from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hikers can learn more about the history of the park with a 1.3-mile hike at 1 p.m., or search for signs of spring on a one-mile hike of Cherry Lane and Fernwood trails at 3 p.m. (Parking is limited. ith Old Man Winter having Northeast Ohio firmly in his grasp, the beer calendar turns to heartier brews meant to help combat the dreary days and frigid nights. Imperial stouts, winter warmers and barley wines are the order of the day in the beer world right now, all big beers with amazing complexity and high alcohol.

By definition, barley wines are ales with an alcohol content usually ranging above 8.5 percent. Similar to wines, they can be laid down and aged out, showing changing tastes and complexities that might not be readily apparent upon first opening a new bottle. For this reason, most brewers put a vintage date on them. The flavors are big, bold and deep, with an appropriate warming effect due to the high alcohol reminiscent of a sherry or port. Higher alcohol content is the result of using considerably more malt than in

a regular brew, thus yielding more sugar from those malts when they are boiled in the brewing process.

Brooklyn Monster is intended as homage to the British style barley wines. It is a tad hoppier than its English counterparts, but does have the deep aromas and flavors normally associated with traditional English barley wines. Figs, dates and toffee dominate the flavor with a creamy texture that helps hide the alcohol burn. A slightly spirituous finish helps round Brooklyn Monster into form.

Victory Old Horizontal is American in nature, thus it tends toward bigger flavors and a bigger alcohol percentage. It’s bracingly bitter up front, giving way to the traditional caramelized sugar, plums and cherries with a hint of orange peel and grapefruit on the finish. The heat from the alcohol plays and mingles nicely with all of the complex flavors. A slight drying is noticeable on the finish, leaving one thirsting for another sip.

nless you’re a regular at a local watering hole, it’s likely you don’t know much about the person who served you that vodka tonic on Saturday night. In attempt to change that, we spent time with bartenders from four popular downtown gathering places to learn how they got their start, which drinks they enjoy most and what makes them tick.

Favorite Drink: Jameson and Ginger Ale “It was a really easy way to have fun at work and make money without interfering with my classes,” Kelly Wells says of how she began bartending four years ago while taking classes at Kent State. “Now I’m graduated and it’s nice to be able to come in at night and meet people in the community, and have time during the day to work on my art.”

Wells has even found a way to incorporate art with her bartending job. In her down time, she likes to experiment with stuffing olives with different things—wasabi, cheese, spinach and artichokes. “Garnishing drinks is what I enjoy,” she explains, “making them visually pleasing.”

Another fun part of her job? Serving up warm libations like cognac. “It’s so fun to put hot water on the bottom and then balance the cup on top so the heat comes up and warms the liquor,” she says, admitting “sometimes it’s a disaster ’cause it doesn’t stay.”

Though Wells loves her job, it does come with a few pet peeves. For instance, she gets frustrated when customers ask if she has any sweet red wines. “They don’t exist,” she explains. She also doesn’t like when customers won’t tell her when they don’t like something. She says she can see it in their eyes when they’re unhappy, and if there’s a problem she’d be happy to fix it.

Wells is currently saving up to one day move to New Haven, Conn. “I have a couple little bells that I got there,” she says, “and every time I get a really good tip I ring them to remind me of my goal.”

VegiTerranean Favorite Drink: Mojito In keeping with the bar’s friendly atmosphere, Kimberly Blouir likes it when people address her by name to request another drink, rather than bang an empty beer bottle or glass on the bar to get her attention. “I tell everyone my name,” she says. “They can call me when they’re ready (for more).” However, Blouir jokes that if you don’t want to use her name “Beer Goddess” or “Bar Bitch” will also do.

If that bottle or glass is empty and you’re not sure what to order next, Blouir will be happy to give you recommendations. With 10 years of experience behind the bar, she knows her stuff and has created a few signature drinks.

One such creation is the Prickly Pear Martini, which features Voodoo Tiki Desert Rose tequila, triple sec, sour and lime. The tequila is made from the prickly pear plant, and is an ingredient Blouir discovered years ago when working in Florida. Thankfully, she was able to convince her local distributor to begin carrying it.

However, Blouir’s favorite drink to make is a mojito, regardless of the type. “I’m very picky about my mojitos,” she says. To make a good mojito, it’s important to have fresh ingredients (especially mint) and to avoid using too much sugar, she adds. Spring and summer are prime seasons for mojitos because that’s when you get the freshest mint. Pre-packaged ingredients just won’t do.

Like the restaurant, the bar at VegiTerranean is also vegan. This means you’ll find less variety when it comes to scotch, whiskey and other liquors that are sometimes cured in a pork-lined barrel, and you won’t find any Bailey’s or port. Don’t let that stop you from coming down and letting Blouir make you a drink, though. “Come in with an open mind,” she says.

When it comes to getting the best service from your bartender, the experts agree: Communication is the key. Don’t be afraid to say what you want and exactly how you want it. One of the biggest frustrations for a bartender is when customers don’t clearly communicate what they want and then are upset that the bartender didn’t produce it.

Secondly, assess the atmosphere of the bar before making your order. If it’s a busy night and you can see the bartender is trying to serve several people at once, make sure you know what you want before getting his or her attention. Weeknights, when the bar is less busy, are better opportunities to sit and chat with the bartender, seeking recommendations. Most of the time if a bartender recommends a drink and you don’t like it, they’ll gladly make you another drink free of charge.

Bricco Favorite Drink: Jack Daniels “I serve booze to my former Boy Scout leader. It’s funny how the world comes full circle,” says Bricco bartender Gabriel Riazi. “People who used to take me to soccer practice I now make Bombay Sapphire martinis for.”

Born and raised in the Rubber City, Riazi is a self-described “product of Akron.” You may have even seen the Kent State theater grad over the years in local productions at Porthouse Theatre, Weathervane Playhouse or the Canton Players Guild. But even if you don’t know Riazi personally, he’ll still give you great service. “The nicer your are to me, the nicer I am to you,” he says. “I always tell people I work for smiles, not tips.” Of course tips don’t hurt either.

Although Riazi hasn’t developed his own signature drink, he feels he makes “a pretty mean margarita,” and notes that all bartenders have their own flare when it comes to making drinks from Bricco’s martini list. One such concoction is the Hip Smurf, made with Hpnotiq, Smirnoff cranberry vodka, Skyy citrus, triple sec, lemon-lime soda and blue curaco.

“It’s pretty potent,” he says. “It kicks your ass.”

So does the quality of liquor you drink have any bearing on how you’ll feel the next day? According to Riazi, there’s probably a bit of truth to that. And although he wouldn’t personally drink well liquors, he can see why some people do. “It’s like the concept of drinking a $10 bottle of wine or a $300 bottle of wine,” he explains. “At the end of the bottle, you’re gonna be in the same place.”

If you really want to make an impression on your bartender, tell him or her your name and a little about yourself. Next time you come in, the bartender will probably remember you and this will lead to more personalized service.

Finally, how much do you tip? While this can vary, the consensus is pretty much $1 per drink or 20 percent of your tab. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on the quality of service.

“I’ve been on a tequila kick lately,” he says.

Raised in Northeast Ohio, Alexander White spent several years working as a bartender in New York before returning to Akron where he started work at Crave a few months ago. “The nice thing about Akron is you get to be a little more personal with your customers,” he says of the contrast between busy Manhattan night clubs and Akron’s low-key bar scene.

“There’s more interaction here.”

Though he had an opportunity to go to bartending school, White declined.

Instead, he felt he’d learn best “in the heat of the moment.” He has come up with a few of his own concoctions over the years. One of his personal favorites is Raspberry Lemonade, made with raspberry Stoli, Bacardi Limón, sour and seven, with a splash of Chambord that floats along the bottom. “It’s a good summer cocktail,” White explains, adding that “you always have to taste it with a little straw here, to make sure it’s just right.”

So what does your drink order say about you?

According to White, young drinkers have a tendency to order something really sweet or really strong. Seasoned drinkers tend to order more traditional drinks that are strong and have a kick. “You can kind of tell the maturity level in somebody by what they’re drinking,” he says.

here was a time when you could tell what city you were in by listening to the radio.

That’s not true anymore in most markets,” says Cleveland-based media consultant John Gorman. “Akron is a rare exception.”

According to Gorman, locally owned Rubber City Radio Group, which controls three Akron stations, deserves most of the credit.

This year, the company’s 97.5 WONE-FM celebrates 25 years as “The Home of Rock and Roll.” President and CEO Thom Mandel says it’s the top-rated station in Greater Akron among men 55 and older, and it’s consistently at or near the top among all adults 25 to 54.

“For better or worse, we don’t educate people about what they should hear,” says Mandel. “We play what they want to hear and sample things they will like.”

That includes a mix of classic and new rock, from AC/ DC and Skynyrd to Alice in Chains and Shinedown, and a lot in between. “Music trends come and go, and we’ve dabbled in them all. But our mission is (to play) basic rock and roll,” says morning co-host Tim Daugherty, who was part of the station’s original on-air team.

Local and independent Media mogul Mandel bought his first station, Medina’s 94.9 WDBN-FM, in 1988. He changed the format from adult contemporary to country and renamed it WQMX. In 1993, his Rubber City Radio Group purchased WONE and sister station 1590 WAKR-AM. What Mandel and his staff have accomplished in an era of “big corporate radio,” in which a handful of companies own the majority of stations nationwide, is impressive. “Akron may be the largest market in the country still dominated by a local, independent owner,” Mandel says from his first-floor office at

the Akron Radio Center, on West Market Street just west of North Hawkins Avenue.

Gorman, himself a former broadcaster who was with 100.7 WMMS-FM in its glory days of the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, knows of only one other local owner who consistently leads a market in ratings and revenue, and that station is in Philadelphia. “(Mandel) deserves more credit than just having successful and locally owned radio stations,” Gorman says.

“Akron is near the top in time spent listening. More people in Akron listen to the radio more often than in most other markets.”

‘Digital’ from day one WONE was Akron’s first FM station, created in the 1940s with original call letters WAKR-FM. It was started by family-run Summit Radio Corp., which also owned WAKR-AM and, later, the city’s first TV station, WAKR-TV (later WAKC-TV). In the 1960s, WONE was known as WAEZ-FM, an easy-listening station. It adopted the rock format and its current call letters in 1985.

Fittingly, the first song the new rock station played was Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

When the station switched to rock, Mandel says it was already playing CDs while the competition was still spinning vinyl.

Listeners probably couldn’t hear the difference, as the transmitters were still analog, “but it gave the station a claim to quality. It was ‘better, clearer, digital.’”

Today, WONE is completely digital. Every song you hear is a WAV file, with the music stored on a five-terabyte hard drive.

There is still a CD player in the studio, but it is rarely used. “I used to replace them every six months. Now they last forever,” Mandel says.

ers now do the work. And voice tracking allows DJs to record parts of their shows in advance. “I can be on the air while not really being in the studio,” Daugherty says. “Ultimately, it does make the job easier.”

The second appears local but uses, in his words, “smoke and mirrors.” Mandel cites the example of one Akron station whose midday host no longer lives in the city—or the state, for that matter—but is still heard here weekdays doing a “local” show—a cost-saving measure for the station’s owner.

The third kind of station is what Mandel has created at WONE, WAKR and WQMX. On-air talent is local, employees are encouraged to volunteer and be seen in the community, and charities and nonprofits receive station support. “It’s the right thing to do, and it’s good business,” says Mandel, a former board chair of the United Way of Summit County.

He sees his stations as agents of change that can do good by providing publicity for local events, issues and organizations.

One such recipient is Haven of Rest, which benefits each December from WQMX’s annual “Tree of Lights” fundraising campaign.

Broadcasting in Akron, for Akron Mandel says you can tune in to about 45 different radio stations in the parking lot of the Akron Radio Center, and all but 10 are from Cleveland. Half of those remaining are based in Akron, including WONE, WAKR and WQMX. That gives Mandel’s stations a head start among Greater Akron listeners.

But it’s not enough just to be based here. Mandel believes his stations have to offer quality programming—“to sound as good or better than the Cleveland stations”—and be part of the community.

Before Mandel made WONE No. 1, the station changed hands several times in just a few years.

Mandel says these owners “damaged the brand” by making cuts to local on-air talent. At one point, the morning show was imported from another market and the program director was from New York. The station had two local DJs, and according to Mandel, “all they did was play music.”

“Ownership changes came fast and furious for a lot of radio stations back in the late ’80s and early ’90s,” Daugherty says. “It was always a time of concern, not knowing if you’d be retained or if they’d go in another direction.”

Mandel changed that, with Rubber City Radio Group providing stability and a local presence that’s unrivaled.

Agents of change There are three types of radio stations, according to Mandel, who got his start in commercial radio and attended college in Syracuse, New York, before moving back to Northeast Ohio. The first is nothing more than a jukebox that plays music or syndicated 36

“Their partnership is invaluable as we reach out to help the homeless and needy in the Greater Akron community” says the Rev. Ben Walker, who will retire as executive director of Haven of Rest Ministries at year’s end. “Rubber City’s commitment to the community is so visible ... They’re a treasure in our area.”

A local success story In 1993, three years after Mandel purchased WONE and WAKR, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Among other things it eliminated ownership caps, making possible the nationwide chains that dominate today’s radio landscape.

Gorman says the big corporations paid too much for stations in the ensuing buying frenzy, thinking people had to listen to radio, and they didn’t consider competition or new technologies on the horizon like satellite radio or streaming audio.

Today, Gorman says the nationwide chains are strapped with debt. At least one is facing Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“I expect we’ll see some fire sales on the horizon as the major chains are forced by creditors to sell off properties to reduce debt,” Gorman predicts. “Some stations, including many AMs, will probably (go off the air), but we will have more independent owners and smaller groups in the future—and they’ll be looking at success stories like Rubber City Radio as the template.”

hen’s the last time you took a city bus? Do you avoid it because you think it’s unsafe...inconvenient...or just doesn’t go where you normally drive? And if gasoline prices got higher would you reconsider public transportation at least as a part-time option?

These are just a few of the questions METRO Regional Transit Authority officials have been asking its current riders and the community-at-large in an ongoing effort to match routes, schedules and services with the transportation needs of all kinds of local people.

Vital services and “choice riders”

Many of the bus lines in Summit County provide vital transportation to low-income riders who don’t have cars and to people whose disabilities prevent them from driving. Monday through Friday grocery buses take senior citizens who live in low-income high rise apartments to the grocery store. About 600 Akron students ride the METRO RTA to school each day. More than 15,000 people are registered to ride smaller SCAT, Summit Citizens’ Area Transit, buses to places like doctor’s offices.

Beyond riders who rely on METRO for vital transportation, there is also a loyal core of what RTA officials call “choice riders”—those whose cars would get them where they want to go, but who choose to take the bus instead. Right now, most of those choice riders live in Summit County and take the NorthCoast Express, NCX, to work in downtown Cleveland.

Alec Works, senior internal auditor for the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, is one such rider. Having taken the NCX for several years, he says METRO buses are reliable and its drivers are courteous.

“The best part is not having to deal with traffic, especially in bad weather,” Works says. He spends his afternoon commute on the bus reading, listening to music or just relaxing—much less stressful than driving home after a long day, he adds.

METRO has been offering NorthCoast Express service for more than 14 years and there are currently eight buses. All are equipped with Wi-Fi and six buses are new. There are two daily NCX routes.

One starts at the new Intermodal Transit Center on South Broadway and stops at the Park N Ride lot on Ghent Road before heading to Cleveland. The other initiates at Chapel Hill and stops in Twinsburg on its way to Public Square.

Base rate is $5 each way; 10-ride passes are $40.

How is METRO RTA funded?

While Greater Cleveland RTA is expected to begin a $9 million reduction in service levels in April, METRO RTA (which has also faced federal and state budget cuts) is in a much better position. The biggest reason is that Summit County voters passed a sales tax levy increase in 2008. This permanent levy of .5 percent replaced the previous .25 that helped fund METRO RTA. This county sales tax funds the lion’s share of METRO’s annual budget: 69.58 percent in 2008.

5.6 million in 2008 to a little more than 5 million in 2009. NCX ridership dropped from 90,784 in 2008 to 75,726 in ’09.

That eco-friendly design cuts energy consumption by 25 percent in the summer (less in winter) and saves METRO RTA about $12,000 per year in electricity usage. Even more surprisingly, it has become an income producer for METRO.

This reflects a national trend, Becker says.

Because of new legislation passed after it was built, the center is expected to generate $50,000 per year from Duke Energy for the purchase of METRO’s Solar Renewal Energy Credit which the utility can use to offset its requirement to produce more energy from renewable sources.

Overall, passenger fares cover less than 11 percent of the operating costs of METRO RTA. Base rate for rides is $1.25 (compared to the Greater Cleveland RTA base rate of $2.25.)

Riders pay $2 each way on SCAT, which operates about 1,500 trips per day at a cost to the system of about $22 per passenger.

Intermodal Transit Center

The additional funds (expected to be about $32 million per year compared to $18 million previously) actually put our bus system in a growth pattern by the middle of last year according to Molly Becker, director of communications and marketing for METRO RTA. Still, public transportation funding has been on a roller coaster ride in recent months.

Bad news: Because of the economic downturn, sales tax revenues for 2009 were 9 percent less than expected.

Good news: The federal government provided an additional $8.3 million in stimulus funds through the Federal Transit Administration. This freed up money for more projects, according to Becker.

Bad news: Investment income is down and riders (with or without cars) still need jobs in order to have a regular need for bus transportation. Increasing unemployment meant overall ridership dropped 11.5—from a little more than

Since METRO was created in 1969, passenger transfers were made street side in downtown Akron. The new transit center, which opened in January 2009, provides safer, off-street transfers and much more.

It features an enclosed waiting area for 300 people, a meeting room (open to the public and free to nonprofits,) and the Urbean Café which started as a kiosk in late 2009 and expanded recently to a fullservice café. The facility has a public art space managed by Artists of Rubber City, more than 90 security cameras and even an Akron Police Department substation.

It also houses the Greyhound Bus service and has space available for other possible tenants down the road.

The 14,000-square foot glass and steel center is equipped with alternative energy, heating and cooling systems.

Its solar panel array (133 KW) was the largest single array in Ohio at the time it was built. It also has 45 geothermal wells (each more than 300 feet deep) for heating and cooling.

Other new developments...

Bike racks have been installed on all lineservice buses to make it easier for people to bike and ride.

A new South Arlington Road circulator route and an extension of an existing route to the Stow courthouse were added last year.

Plans for a possible rapid transit route on the East and West Market corridors (similar to Euclid corridor project in Cleveland) are in the initial stages.

With a $1 million grant from the State of Ohio, Department of Development, METRO is adding an even larger solar array (488KW) to its Kenmore Boulevard bus barn.

The system will introduce its first hybrid diesel/electric bus in April to coincide with Earth Day. It will continue running promotions like Dump the Pump day offering free rides June 17 and its “Traffic Jam” community party in September to encourage more people to try the bus.

Will Summit County ever become less dependent on cars and more oriented toward public transportation?

“I think it’s gonna have to,” Becker says.

“Even though you can get around Akron pretty quickly by car, I think economic and green concerns are making people more open to public transportation,” she says. “Especially if we can make our system more user-friendly. The more options we can give people, the better.”

Destination Dentistry Two local dentists make a great impact in far places

T

hey hear they are coming a few days before, despite the fact there is no telephone, Internet or television. Those who live closer gather soon after sunrise. But some arrive later, after as much as a day’s walk. They stand in long lines, hoping to get their turn before the cutoff.

This is their only chance of help. They are eager. They are waiting to get their teeth pulled.

Robert Fulton, D.D.S., is there, 200 miles deep in the Amazon jungle, waiting for them. There is no electricity or running water. Fulton pulls as many as 380 teeth a week with sunshine and a flashlight. It’s not the medical standard Americans are used to. “My first dental chair consisted of a wooden stool next to a pole, to which we secured a floatation cushion with duct tape for a headrest,” Fulton says. But simple sterilization and anesthesia are treats for these indigenous people.

Fulton, who practices in Cuyahoga Falls, has been performing volunteer dentistry in the Amazon for the past 10 years. After developing an interest in the rainforest during a trip to Costa Rica, he surfed the Web to research more on the Amazon and found a volunteer opportunity instead. In 2000, he joined the Amazon Promise, a U.S.-based non profit organization that helps provide desperately needed medical care in the Upper Amazon Basin and Northeast Peru. The organization has been taking medical and nursing residents over since 1994, but hadn’t had a dentist in years.

So Fulton got right to work. “I left Ohio with my three large Rubbermaid containers of personal belongings and dental supplies to meet a group of people I did not know, in a third world country about which I had no idea and where I could 40

not speak the native language, other than ‘no entiendo.’”

What started as a big leap for Fulton has become a great success. In his time there, he has worked as dental director of a clinic he helped established. It currently runs like an American clinic with dental chairs and modern sterilization.

Fulton makes an effort to go every two years for a couple of weeks. Meanwhile he keeps in touch directing the clinic by e-mail and fundraising. “My goal is to train the people down there to do what we do,” he says.

Fulton hopes to look into restorative work in the future, but for now mainly focuses on extraction. “Right now I have to think about how long a tooth is going to be in this person’s head. If it’s decayed to a certain point, it’s not worth saving, and that point is way different over there,” he explains.

There’s a desperate need in the villages and Fulton feels it’s his duty to fulfill it.

“If I don’t do it in the Amazon, then no one’s going to do it,” he says.

Rod Siddall, D.D.S., has the same feelings about the people of Southern India.

For the past four years he has taken time away from his practice in Tallmage to make annual service trips to the Indian state Tamil Nadu. He travels with his wife, who works as hospice nurse, and a small team out of Hudson Community Chapel to volunteer at the Sharon General Hospital and Cancer Center.

The center is part of the Sharon Gardens Mission Base, a ministry of the India Gospel League since 1994. Siddall coordinated the installation of a permanent dental clinic inside the hospital with equipment he spent one year refurbishing in his garage. But before Siddall, dental services were rare in this area as well. “This is the first time many will see a dentist in their lives,” he explains.

“People can’t get help from anyone else except you.”

But the trip over isn’t easy. Siddall and his team spend 22 hours in the air, including three layovers. They fly into Bangalore, where a van is waiting to take them on a five-hour drive to Salem. But

they’re not there yet. The team travels to about four or five villages on each 10-14 day trip. The villages range in size from 40-6,000 people. A local pastor and his wife let the community know they are coming and the lines start forming.

Like in the Amazon, there is no electricity or running water. But these people are also especially impoverished. They are the Dalit, the untouchable population in India. The average worker makes about $1 a day or less. Siddall and the other team members work under what looks like a “sultan’s tent” helping men, women, the very young and the very old.

They pull teeth, kneel to help a patient with no legs and sometimes see much worse.

Siddall speaks of one especially serious case. “One lady had a very severe facial swelling. She was in her early 30s and had suffered from headaches for years.

When I examined her I found she had a hole that had eroded in her cheekbone and went clear up under the eye socket.

It was the result of a tooth that had badly decayed and became infected. All she could do was suffer through it.” Siddall drained the infection and gave her injections of antibiotics. “I thought that we probably saved her life,” he says.

The team usually consists of one physician, four or five nurses and about seven or eight non-medical volunteers.

They stay for about two weeks helping with dental, medical and even vision concerns. But whatever the situation is, Siddall says the people are overwhelmingly grateful. “People are gracious and happy. They enjoy life more than we do here. We’re not accustomed to show our appreciation in America because we’re usually not in such difficult situations.”

Fulton sees great appreciation from Amazon patients as well. “People turn out on the riverbank and say thank you for coming to our place. There was honest and emphatic gratitude from the entire village for what we provided. It’s extremely gratifying work,” he says.

hen Drs. As much as we try to keep ourselves and our families safe and healthy, serious injuries demanding the type of care available only at Trauma Centers-do happen. It’s easy to imagine the wide range of injuries Emergency Departments (ED) see on any given day. For the trauma teams at Summa Akron City Hospital and Summa affiliate Robinson Memorial Hospital, the ED is the front door to their office.

Since trauma is unpredictable, the trauma centers must be prepared to respond at all times. Patients brought to either Summa Health System trauma center are immediately evaluated by the trauma team to determine the extent of their injuries and prioritize their care. The trauma team is led by the trauma surgeon; however, the specialty of trauma care crosses many disciplines, including emergency physicians, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and others. These specialists work as a team to ensure patients receive appropriate and coordinated surgical, medical and rehabilitation interventions. The result: Injured patients receive immediate, comprehensive and compassionate care at the right place, at the right time.

Summa Akron City Hospital is a verified Level 1 trauma center and provides the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients with a full range of specialists and equipment available 24 hours a day. In 2008, the Summa Akron City Hospital trauma center treated nearly 1,300 patients—a three year high. For the previous three years, falls remained the most common source of injury for patients admitted to Summa affiliate Robinson Memorial Hospital, a level 3 trauma center. Summa Akron City Hospital’s fall statistics overtook motor vehicle crashes for the first time in the same 36-month period. This trend is attributed to the aging Baby Boomer generation.

Nationally, trauma kills more people under the age of 44 than cancer, heart disease, AIDS or other diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control. “Injury most commonly affects people in the their most productive years of their life and often is devastating to patients and their families, which is why injury prevention is so important as well as providing superior care to our patients,” says Summa Akron City Hospital Trauma Program Manager, Berni Martin.

According to Martin, Summa’s trauma centers utilize an allencompassing approach to optimal trauma care beginning with injury prevention and extending through pre-hospital, resuscitation, acute care and rehabilitation. Summa Health System provides training and trauma education for physicians, nurses and emergency service providers as well as community injury prevention educational programs and interventions.

“As a Level 1 trauma center, Summa Akron City Hospital has an active research program and vigorously participates in many research studies to advance the science of surgical care as well as collaborating with other facilities and agencies in our communities to deliver the highest level of care,” Martin says.

Looking for a Break?

Tax relief on 2009 income aimed at consumer relief, spurring economy.

E

xpanded deductions and new tax credits for a broader cross-section of taxpayers are among the changes to watch for when you file your 2009 income tax return. Families with college students, new home and car buyers and homeowners who made energy upgrades to their property are among the groups targeted for tax relief this year.

Many of the new reductions and credits were created by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, ARRA, the stimulus package passed by Congress last February.

Here are some of the most noteworthy credits, but you’ll have to do your homework to collect on them.

Documentation requirements can be complicated and some parameters changed mid-year 2009. Consult irs. gov for more specifics or check with your tax advisor to stay on top of the ever-changing rules and regs.

Education Credits A new American Opportunity Tax Credit, worth up to $2,500, is applicable to “qualified tuition and related expenses.” This represents a $700 increase over the former Hope Credit and includes books, supplies and equipment required for a course of study. It also gives relief to more families in higher income brackets.

Taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less—$160,000 or less for joint filers—qualify for the full credit. Because 40 percent of the credit is refundable, even those who owe no tax can get up to $1,000 of the credit for each eligible student as cash back, according to the IRS. In addition to the Opportunity Credit, another temporary change allows monies set aside for college or post-secondary training in 529 saving plans to be spent on computer technology, both hardware and software, if that technology will be used for educational purposes.

Credits for Employees Unlike some of the other tax credits, which are realized at filing time, the Making Work Pay Tax Credit came to employees a little at a time last year in their paychecks.

Beginning April 1, 2009, employers were required to withhold less income tax from their employees last year (about $400 less per single employee). This credit will continue throughout 2010.

If you’re on a really tight budget, you’ve probably already noticed that your take home pay is slightly lower this year than it was last year from April through December. That’s because the Making Work Pay Credit is being divided over a 12-month period in 2010 (as opposed to a nine-month period in 2009.)

Certain employees (those with two jobs, for example) need to be especially proactive and make sure that only one employer gives them this credit in the same tax year. Otherwise, come filing time, the overcredited employee could have an unexpected tax bill to pay. Ouch!

First-time buyers who didn’t own a home for the previous three years are eligible for a tax credit of up to $8,000. The deadline for that credit has been extended to include home purchases that close

by June 30, 2010. The credit does not have to be repaid as long as you continue to live in your new house for three years.

This credit has been expanded to include other home buyers (not just first-timers) as well. If you bought a replacement home after Nov. 6, 2009 (or agree to buy one by April 30, 2010 and purchase it by June 30) you may be eligible for a home buyers credit of up to $6,500. If you’re not moving, you could still qualify for tax credits on home improvements that make your existing property more energy efficient.

Products like insulation, certain new exterior windows or energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems could do more than just add to the value of your home. You could get a 30 percent energy tax credit to help offset their cost.

The maximum credit limit is $1,500 for improvements placed in service in 2009 and 2010, and purchases must meet specific energy-saving standards.

Many solar hot water heaters, geothermal heat pumps, plug-in electric cars and car conversion kits qualify for the 30 percent credit with even higher limits.

But standards have been raised since the last time energy tax credits were given in 2007, and some products that qualify for EnergyStar ratings do not qualify for a tax credit. Again, do your homework before you buy.

E-Filing Your Taxes Last year, 67 percent of taxpayers—almost 95 million—filed their taxes electronically, according to Eric Erickson, IRS representative for Ohio and West Virginia.

Individual taxpayers are not required to e-file by the federal government. (In fact, those who are amending their return or claiming the First Time Home Buyer Credit, must file a paper return.) Still the IRS encourages e-filing and beginning this year, the state of Ohio has made e-filing a requirement for tax preparers who filed more than 75 returns in 2008 or 2009. This new requirement is estimated to save the state more than $1 per return.

Tax returns submitted electronically facilitate more rapid comparisons between the federal, state and school district returns to minimize discrepancies. They also allow for faster processing procedures and quicker refunds, according to the Ohio Department of Taxation.

Erickson agrees. “If you file electronically and have your refund deposited directly into your bank account, you can have your money in 7-10 days as opposed to a few months,” he says.—JD

The Term Mental Retardation is Disappearing from Common Usage Across Ohio

By Kevin McGee So what should you call a person with mental retardation?

O

n July 9, 2009, Ted Strickland, Governor of the State of Ohio, signed Senate Bill 79, which dropped the term “mental retardation” from the name of the County of Summit Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and the name of the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. This change has caused many of the uninitiated to ask, “What’s the big deal with the term mental retardation? I thought it was a diagnosis or a common, even polite reference to a mental condition?”

The truth is that the term does remain as a diagnosis in the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th. Edition,” also known as the DSM IV, a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association that defines all known mental disorders and disabilities. However, over time language changes, in meaning and in use. A form of the word “mental retardation,” commonly referred to as “the R-word” has been morphed by popular culture into a pejorative, sometimes hateful term. Terms like “mentally retarded” and “the R-word” are far too com56

monly used to sarcastically chide and tease by those ignorant of the label’s damaging and hateful nature. A brief education in the use of the German form of the “R-word” in the Nazi eugenic policies 65 years ago might be helpful in convincing many of the true level of distaste that should be associated with such verbal affronts.

But changing times and changing attitudes can be expected to lead to changes in government policies and the language used by the state. For many, such language revisions might be considered the province of Orwellian “newspeak” from the “Ministry of Truth.” However, that is not entirely the case relative to the Ohio’s decision to change the name of the state department and 88 county boards that oversee the provision of developmental disability services to more than 70,000 Ohioans. It was different because it was those 70,000 people who became politically active to drive the change.

You see, it was people with developmental disabilities and the organizations they have created in recent years (like People First of Summit County and the ARC of Summit and Portage Counties) that contacted government officials and advocated for change. It was not third party do-gooders who made this March 2010

change but rather these organizations and their members with disabilities that requested that the term “mental retardation” be removed from the Ohio Revised Code. On their own behalf, they asked for a change to a law that has heretofore categorized all people with developmental disabilities with the broad, labeling brush of “MR” when in fact their commonality is that they are simply eligible for services.

On Jan. 13 of this year, the Summit Board of DD recognized the Summit County Chapter of People First of Ohio for the role that they played in making a change for the better for themselves and all the others who will come after them. During the board meeting, a special resolution was presented to the People First of Summit County officers—President Jack Carroll, Vice President Karen Dudock, Treasurer Brian Monroe—on behalf of people with disabilities.

So as a result of the law change, Akron Life & Leisure readers need to know two things: First, the new name of the primary community agency that provides and funds services for eligible Summit County residents is now known as the County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board. Second, some may still wonder, “What should you call a person with mental retardation?” To this question the thinking person might respond, “Try using their name.”

e often hear about various organizations dedicated to providing services for people with developmental disabilities (Goodwill, Hattie Larlham, UDS, Ardmore and others), and some people may wonder what these providers have in common and also how they differ from one another.

One commonality is that all these providers receive funding from the County of Summit DD Board and the levy that funds Summit County’s services for people with developmental disabilities.

Every Summit County resident, child or adult, who is eligible for services is assigned a Summit DD Board Service and Support Administrator. It’s the SSA’s job to assess individual needs, facilitate development of individual service plans, arrange for services and monitor the provision of those services. SSAs often assist families with questions, planning or referrals on subjects such as Social Security, guardianship, Medicaid, waiting lists, etc. One way that the SSAs facilitate this “free choice” of provider is through an online portal with a list of providers and where individuals may post their needs (found at summitdd.org).

Medicaid-eligible individuals are able to choose from a variety of services including residential, transportation, employment, day array services and others. Essentially, each agency, including the Summit DD who provides some of these services, is competing for people who are eligible to choose them. Staff salaries are paid through the agencies, and businesses bill Medicaid directly. Medicaid pays approximately 60 percent of the cost while the other 40 percent needs to be matched, usually through local tax dollars. Because these providers all receive funding from the Summit DD Board, either directly or through the Medicaid match, when you see a Summit DD tax levy on the ballot, understand that those tax dollars help not only the board’s services, but several agencies throughout the county.

One such agency is United Disability Services of Akron, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. UDS provides a wide array of services including adult services, respite community living, low-vision services and transportation. A few examples include:

• BraVo! - “Building Relationships and Volunteer Opportunities” is the mission of this group, which provides volunteer service to more than 23 community agencies. The work varies from putting together member packets for the Akron Roadrunner Marathon to painting stands for Salvation Army kettles, serving in soup kitchens or maintaining gardens for Keep Akron

Beautiful—and that’s just the beginning. Though BraVo! is self-governed, UDS staff member Courtney Deal, facilitates the group and helps participants keep track of their milestones and achievements. As of Jan. 13, members had completed more than 11, 581 hours of service in the community.

• Toy and Resource Center - For 35 years, this toy lending library has provided developmental toys for public use to anyone with a child from birth to age 6. Many of the toys have been equipped with adaptive switches to allow use by children with various disabilities, but the library is open for public membership for a nominal fee.

Toys are available to help children improve their fine and gross motor skills, cognitive development, social development and more.

Currently under Evant’s auspices, there are 30 residences providing small familylike environments for individuals with disabilities. Each home has access to a vehicle, which allows residents regular

Nate sees himself as a middleman. “I’m a mediator between the parents and child; school and child; and the hospital or psychiatrist and child.”

Brian Perusek, ICPS, has a different perspective, given his social work background. He focuses on all the issues a family might face, including food, clothing and finances.

A coordinated approach Dave* is one of Nate’s clients who used to display severely aggressive behavior.

He often punched and kicked his father, and once hit him with a metal rod. Nate coordinated services with all of Dave’s providers and worked with his psychiatrist, Dr. Jewell. He arranged for Dave to go to respite to give him a break from his home environment. Nate goes to the school to give his input at Dave’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) meetings, and shares how his interactions are going at school with the rest of the providers.

Building strong relationships The team focuses on building good relationships with its clients. Brian worked with a 15-year-old boy who had been physically and sexually abused by males, and was afraid to be in the same room as a man. Brian worked with him for two years, helping him rebuild his trust with other males. Today, he is in a job training program and doing well. “It’s really rewarding to see how resilient some of these kids are,” he says. * All client names have been changed to protect confidentiality.

REM Ohio is a human services provider for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The agency provides residential, vocational and medical support for its clients. In addition to its regular services, REM Ohio developed the Ready, Fit and Able wellness and recreation program with the help of community partners the Summit DD Board and Akron Area YMCA. This year the REM Ohio and the YMCA decided to explore how they could

further develop the program to reach more participants. In February, the REM Ohio Opportunities Social and Vocational Center, 2052 Romig Road in Akron, began offering Ready, Fit and Able exercise classes on Mondays and Thursdays beginning at 1 p.m. Led by an Akron Area YMCA staff member, the classes will feature low-impact aerobic exercises that can be adjusted based on an individual’s physical ability. As an added bonus, participants who attend at least one Ready, Fit and Able class for seven weeks will receive a weekend pass to the YMCA of their choice to enjoy any and all activities offered.

any drive by the enormous brick building on South Broadway on their way to the Interstate, but few know of the successful brewery it once was.

The Akron Brewing Company began with a group of 50 Akron saloonkeepers and a capital of $200,000. Thinking prices from existing breweries were too high, these local men banded together to create their own company with a guaranteed supply of beer at a reasonable cost.

The company began construction of the brewery in September 1903 for $150,000 at the current location. The Victorian style building was primarily made of steel, which has allowed it to hold up well over the years. The initial annual capacity of the five-story brewhouse was 30,000 barrels per year, but could be enlarged to 100,000 barrels if necessary.

White Rock Export Beer made its debut in 1904. It was sold in many local saloons and also bottled and marketed heavily for home consumption. This was an emerging trend with the increasing threat of temperance groups.

Even with prohibition looking inevitable, the company undertook a $45,000 expansion in late 1916. They built a large four-story brewhouse, which remains the prominent feature of the south Akron skyline today.

After statewide prohibition became effective in 1919, it’s believed that a large speakeasy was created in the basement of the brewery. Here prominent Akronites could come to get alcohol if they knew the entrance password. The company also reincorporated as The Akron Beverage and Cold Storage Company, and produced a White Rock cereal beverage with less the 0.5 percent alcohol— the legal limit.

Late in 1924, the production of cereal beverages ended for good and The People’s Dairy Company purchased the entire company. After this moved to a new location, the plant remained vacant for two years until the Sumner Dairy Company purchased part of the plant and continues to operate there today.

Some of the smaller buildings on the south side of the plant were razed in the 1950’s for construction of the South Expressway, which later became Interstate 76/77. Today the top of the stock house front wall easily reads “THE AKRON BREWING CO.,” a reminder of one of Akron’s first great breweries.
