The King is dead! / ...long live the King! / >> My friend and I were sitting in the clubhouse at Maplecrest Golf Course drinking a beer after playing a round, when his phone went off.

“The mayor just resigned,” he quoted from the text.

“When did this happen?” I asked.

“Just now.”

My friend still knows people inside city hall, having been active in local politics for many years. When not much more was forthcoming, we decided to call the local news outlets (WAKR and the Beacon Journal) to get some more details.

“What?!!” The reporter in 1590 WAKR’s newsroom asked in amazement. Within minutes Ed Esposito, the station’s news director, was on the phone with my friend asking if the rumor was true. My friend, in the meantime got much of the same response when he called a reporter who often covers the mayor. Within the hour everyone knew the news and the mayor’s letter of resignation was made available. But there for a few shining moments, my friend and I were at the center of the local news universe and hadn’t even shed our golf cleats.

My relationship with the mayor began with the launch of Akron Life & Leisure Magazine in 2003. The Mayor wrote a letter of welcome for our first issue. Our relationship with city hall seemed to be solid and I would occasionally see the mayor at fundraisers and at the wine tasting we sponsor with the city every year at Hardesty Park in July.

Whenever he showed up at gatherings, people would crowd around to hear of the mayors latest adventures. I learned that he does not play golf, his recovery from a spider bite was much worse than his open heart surgery and that he didn’t get along too well with the president of the police union, among other things. (The other things being, he doesn’t like journalists, though strangely, through the years he has hired many of them for important positions on his staff, to wit: Dave Lieberth was the news voice of WHLO at one time; Mark Williamson, before he was the mayor’s voice to other journalists was the news anchor on WAKCTV for several years and Billy Soule, who still works for the mayor, worked for 1590 WAKR). I mostly kept my distance and tried not to become a target. That seemed to work until the last election.

In the September 2011 issue of akronlife we decided to go against all of the so serious reporting of all the minutia that the mayoral campaign was generating. We sent out a questionnaire to all of the candidates for Akron mayor. One of the questions was: “If held at gunpoint and forced to watch one of the New Jersey-based reality shows, which one would you choose?”

The candidates – Michael Williams, Jennifer Hensal and Janice Davis – all responded with their own humor, poking fun at some of our other questions and each returned questionnaire was accompanied with a photo of each candidate smiling. Mayor Plusquellic refused to play along and sent a stern message via his aide, city spokeswoman Stephanie York, that he objected to the question about the “gun to

your head” saying it was in bad taste. He said that he did not want his name associated with the questionnaire in any way including saying that he had not filled it out.

Our former editor wrote in her opinion piece at the front of the magazine about politicians with a sense of humor. She cited Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, and finished by quoting Dwight Eisenhower who once said: “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.”

That’s when I learned not to tug on Superman’s cape.

I tried to make amends. I approached the mayor at the funeral of a mutual friend; I tried again at our wine tasting fundraisers we hold in conjunction with the city and again at other fundraisers. He was having none of it and repeated the story about the “gun to your head” question. My son who doesn’t work for the family business, introduced himself as my son at a social gathering and the mayor again told him the story. Then, last July we asked him to be on our cover for the “Best of the City” issue and he agreed, but brought along that same story to the photo shoot. Finally, the last time I saw him was at a fundraiser this spring. This time he approached me and my wife and started a conversation. Several people came up to him during our conversation and offered their support for another run for mayor, which everyone knew he would win.

I asked him if he was going to run this November and he said he didn’t know, which is what he has been saying for several months if we all had been listening. Finally, I asked, “If not you, who?” and he shrugged his shoulders. No mention was made of the offending questionnaire and I assumed that our feud was over.

This magazine has been a big supporter of Mayor Donald J. Plusquellic from our very first issue through the recall election which was launched against him where we told the recallers to “Recall the Recall!”

Akron would not be the same place without the vision and determination of Mayor Plusquelic. We owe the man our gratitude if not for the way he governed, but for what he has accomplished in his governance.

Thank you Mr. Mayor, from all of us in this city.

By the way, Mayor, have you thought about running for governor? Your timing may be just right.

Akron-Canton Airport will be making $14 million worth of enhancements to their facility over the summer. The project is a part of their $110 million dollar program for improvements. Over the course of the summer their goals are to widen the entrance loop, add covered parking, redesign the car-rental lot, put in new exit lanes, install LED lighting, work on the ticket wing and the front of the terminal building.

Spree Trail for 2015

Maple Loop in Liberty Park is now a part of the annual Summit Metro Parks hiking Spree that began on May 1st and will end June 30 th.

The loop is a quarter-mile long and is wheelchair, stroller and cane accessible.

An Ode to Roads / In which we celebrate the way /

There’s a road in the area I grew up in known as Devil’s Backbone. It’s not local vernacular, a nickname given to an otherwise banal roadway appearing on maps as “Oak” or “Henderson.” If you lived on this stretch of concrete, your magazines, bills and birthday cards would arrive with the words “Devil’s Backbone” scrawled on the outside envelope.

I don’t know historic details about this roadway of sinister nomenclature beyond the fact that a fictionalized version of it appeared in Airborne, a 1993 rollerblading movie you’ve likely never seen. My dad, a deliveryman who maneuvered a box truck along the lanes for decades, tells me Devil’s Backbone stretches about 2 miles and half of its addresses were erased in a devastating tornado in 1974. He also tells me that, curiously enough, the road “isn’t very windy.”

The name pops up in other states, such as Virginia and South Carolina, with a particularly frightening iteration, Devil’s Hollow, twisting through a pocket of central Kentucky.

I hope to one day find myself in a situation where it’s revealed to me why Satan’s spine first inspired road namers, but for now I’m satisfied by my personal history with Devil’s Backbone.

As I child, I helped cut and load a tree that stood in the front yard of a Devil’s Backbone property. The owner was probably someone on my dad’s delivery route, and I’m sure my family burned the salvaged wood in our living room’s red brick fireplace. These details, though surely integral to a good story, are insignificant to my memory—what I remember, quite clearly, is my grandpa’s beat-up old pickup truck, me sitting between father and grandfather on the worn, warm vinyl of the bench seat. I remember the trebly whine of country music on AM radio, the increasingly pungent smell of two and a half men, sopping with sweat, filling the pickup’s cab as we made however many trips across the Ohio River carrying truck beds piled high with thick, heavy oak plugs. I remember feeling like a man, an adolescent certainty that trumps mine now at 38.

Roads are like that. They carry us as we rush toward memorable moments, and they usher our minds back through time as we revisit and recount the past. So much of my personal nostalgia traverses along roads, my memories mapping a country that exists only for me.

A small town boulevard where my family and I watched local luminaries float by in creeping Cadillacs, standard fare for a Fourth of July parade but a touch point in time I close my eyes and revisit at will. The long and winding country lane I used to travel along late at night after disappointing evenings with a past love, listening to Jack Kerouac rattle beat

poetry that made ‘90s Kentucky feel like ‘60s San Francisco for as long as the engine stayed alive. That inner-city avenue where my wife and I witnessed a troubling accident then, later in the day, discovered we were pregnant with our eldest child.

I used to walk to work along a specific route in Kent, my boots shuffling over grass-cracked sidewalks, dim morning mind barely registering the shuttered businesses brushing my right shoulder. This particular section of space is gone, crumbling brownstones replaced by shiny buildings infinitely more profitable, but I’m gone too, and I took that timeworn alleyway with me. A slow blink, quick meditation—the road’s still there, ready for a sepiatoned stroll whenever I need it.

The roads I travel now are different from the suburban cul-de-sacs and congested city throughways I’ve known my whole life. I routinely travel along claustrophobic, single lane asphalt on trips that present at least one unintentional game of chicken every time.

The route I take to the grocery store involves a U.S. Numbered highway composed almost entirely of twists, turns and intimidating curves that claim SUVs regularly. This road follows a crooked creek bed and, on a map, appears something drawn by a toddler. If Beelzebub has a menacing lumbar region, I’ll bet it looks a lot like this.

This improbably windy road that makes our tires sing an anxious song is my home.

It may seem like just another treacherous A to B as I race through this twist, that curve, but each turn of the steering wheel adds another inch to a map I’ll study in later years.

Long after the state has drawn a handful of pencil-straight lanes over the route, after selfautomated hover cars make roads seem silly and outdated, when my worn, wrinkled body sits in a retirement village overlooking one of Mars’ reclaimed oceans...then I’ll close my eyes and remember the series of curves that reliably turned my youngest son’s face a pallid white, the shocking view of autumn covering trees with her finest quilt, that time a herd of cattle overtook the road and all we could do was wait and laugh.

Time is a road that races along the demon’s back, life really is a highway, and I’m doing my best to not take the curves too fast. / Rodney Wilson is either a pig farmer who writes or a writer who farms pigs. Either way, he’s got a freezer full of bacon and a finished manuscript, and he’s trying to sell both.

This is the parlor of Oak Place, often known as “that red house on the hill,” which overlooks downtown Akron today. The mansion was built by Lewis Miller (far left) whose Buckeye Mower & Reaper Works, (located on the site of The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall,) became the largest manufacturing concern in Akron in the late 19th century, and where 1,200 men produced mowers, reapers, and farm machines that were reputed to be the best in the world.

Miller was an inventor, a teacher and a writer. When he saw a need to educate bible instructors, he founded the Chautauqua Assembly in 1874 with Methodist Bishop John Vinvent. Miller designed Sunday School classrooms that were replicated around the world as the “Akron Plan.”

Seated at the center is a familiar visitor to Akron, Thomas Edison, who married Mina Miller at Oak Place in1886.

Cline Cellars Cashmere Carneros District of Sonoma Cline Cellars is a family-owned winery located in the Carneros District of Sonoma, founded in 1982 by Fred and Nancy Cline. It all started in the 1960s when Fred would visit his grandparents’ farm in Oakley, Calif., and learn vine growing and winemaking from his grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi. Jacuzzi founded the Jacuzzi Spa Corporation.

The Cline estate, on the original Jacuzzi Family Ranch, produces some of the most remarkable varietals in the wine industry from some of the oldest and most sought-after vineyards in California. Cline Cellars produces and is known for their award-winning Rhone style wines such as, Syrah, Grenache, Marsanne, Roussane and Zinfandels.

They also produce outstanding Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir – all from vineyards owned by the Clines.

The Cline Cellars practice sustainable farming, which is a natural method of farming. They also use a method called Green String, which goes beyond the organic and sustainable farming by not using toxic chemicals for pest and weed control. By introducing sheep into the vineyards they help remove harmful weeds. What the sheep don’t eat, they pull by hand. By working with Bob Cannard, the Green String method produces a soil that is strong, healthy and vibrant. That in turn produces the most flavorful, robust fruit, which shows in their wines.

From pot to plate / Grow your own spice rack this summer /

Over the last few years, people have become very conscious about what is going into their recipes. You don’t need to spend hours in the grocery store, studying labels when it comes to your spice rack though.

Instead, try growing a small herb garden at home this summer.

Elizabeth Kresse, a naturalist with Summit Metro Parks, does programs about how to grow your own herbs and how to integrate them into your cooking. When creating a garden, Kresse says herbs are a great starting point. “Herbs are great as a starter because there’s several of them that are particularly hardy. They’re an easier plant to be able to start with. And then you have the added benefit of being able to use them in your cooking or for stress release.”

When growing your own herbs, you can control an element of your recipe. “You took something from seed or from a young plant.

You cared for it and now you’re able to utilize that. You know what’s happened to that plant, you know where it came from,” says Kresse.

“When you’re cooking, you walk right to your back door, or to your pot, and all the nutrients are right there in the plant at that time and then you add it and you’re eating that. So you can’t get much closer to home.”

Reducing sodium can be a challenge for many.

The use of herbs can add the flavor you may be missing by subtracting the salt, while also keeping the calorie count down.

Herbs like parsley, oregano, chives and basil are good to start with according to Kresse. Parsley is a biennial, meaning that it takes two years for it to complete its life cycle. “It is hardy in our plant zone and it’s something that you can plant and will come back the following year,” says Kresse. Featuring a mild flavor, Kresse says that parsley is

oregano chives widely used to aid in digestion and as a breath freshener. “It’s really nice and mild. It’s [also] great for putting in a spaghetti sauce,” she says.

Oregano is a perennial that will come back year after year. This herb is a good source of vitamin K, Kresse says. “It does have a stronger flavor, so it’s something that you can use in sauces or with certain meats,” she says.

Oregano has also been helpful on the medical front throughout time. “Some of the medicinal uses throughout history that oregano has been used for include toothaches or acne.”

With a light onion flavor, chives are an herb that Kresse says anyone can grow. Another perennial, chives will return each year. “You could just cut [them] up fresh and put them into a pasta salad or any type of salad that you’re cooking in the summer. It just adds a really nice onion flavor,” says Kresse.

recommends not adding them until the end of your preparation. “If you put them in and then you cook something for a long period of time with a fresh herb, it’s going to cook all of the flavor out of it.” Dried herbs can be cooked for the duration because they are going to rehydrate.

Whether you have 5 acres or 5 inches, Kresse says that anyone can start an herb garden. She recommends that potential herb gardeners consider a few things before digging in. First, start small. “Don’t try to be too ambitious too quickly. It can be very rewarding, but there’s a lot of work that goes into it. Pick a few things that you want to start with and start with those.” Also consider the smell. Not every nose enjoys the same aromas. “Not everyone is going to like the same smell, so if it doesn’t appeal to you that’s probably one you’re not going to want to cook with. Try to go [to the garden center] and see which one would appeal to you and the type of cooking that you do.”

Basil features a stronger flavor that can be a great addition to your summer dishes. Kresse suggests taking some fresh tomato, cutting it open, adding some garlic and basil, then drizzling extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar for a delicious summer snack. “The thing with basil is that it bruises easily. You don’t refrigerate it and you don’t generally wash it unless it’s extremely dirty. The more you mess around with the leaves, it’s going to bruise and it’s going to change color.

Gardening can be a calming activity. The aromas of an herb garden especially can provide a relaxing part to any day. Kresse says that she has experienced this herself. “There’s something that’s peaceful and relaxing about [herbs] in general just being out in the garden.”

Bring 6 cups water to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the rosemary and a pinch of salt. Cover and steep, 30 minutes.

Strain into a pitcher and cool to room temperature. Stir the lemon juice, agave nectar and 2 cups cold water into the pitcher. Add more lemon juice or agave nectar to taste.

Serve over ice with more rosemary and/or lemon slices, if desired.

Tabbouleh with Parsley and Pistachios ¼ cup fine bulgur 3 TBS. lemon juice ¼ tsp. honey 1 1/3 cup finely chopped pistachios 1 cup finely chopped flat leaf parsley 1 small cucumber, finely chopped (1 cup) 1 medium tomato, finely chopped (1/3 cup) 4 green onions, finely chopped (1/3 cup) 1/3 cup finely chopped mint (optional) 3 Tbs. olive oil

Place the bulgur in a large bowl and add 1/3 cup boiling water. Let stand for 5 minutes. Stir in lemon juice and honey, and let stand for 5 minutes more, or until all liquid is absorbed.

Fluff the bulgur with a fork, and stir in remaining ingredients. Season with salt and pepper.

This salad is best when made the day before serving. This allows the flavors to intensify.

Create your own herb garden My husband and I love to cook. We mainly stick to recipes that have been passed down throughout each of our families, but sometimes we like to branch out and try something new. Recently this includes using fresh ingredients.

We decided to try our hand at creating a container herb garden. This is a great way to grow your own plants when you don’t have a lot of outdoor space available. Once finished, the small garden becomes a fresh and convenient source of cooking ingredients.

Start out with a plan. Think about what herbs you use the most when cooking and what smells the best. You will definitely smell your little garden if you keep it indoors, so you will want to choose plants that you find appealing.

Find a fun container that you enjoy, as well as one that has drainage. Without proper drainage, your plants could struggle. We picked an old letter carrier. After cleaning it out, we added some extra drainage holes to the bottom of each section. We also placed small stones at the bottom of each section to aid in drainage.

Pour potting soil into your container. Be careful not to overfill the sections of your container. Remember, your plants still need to go in there!

When it comes to the herbs themselves, you can begin with either small plants or seeds. We selected four herbs — lavender, chives, parsley and thyme — that were already young plants. Remove them from the plastic and gently loosen the roots. Create a small hole for your new herb to go into and plant it into the section of your choice.

After all of your herbs are planted, give them a little water. Keep the soil moist, but don’t overdo it. Overwatering your plant can be just as harmful as never watering.

Through exploration we are constantly discovering new things. However you don’t need to dive to the depths of the ocean or scale the tallest peak to find something new. Instead, explore Downtown Akron.

Downtowns were once the source of bustling activity. Citizens flocked to Main Streets all over the nation, shopping, dining and socializing. Decades passed by and the downtowns that were once the hub of activity slowly ebbed. However there has been a resurgence of interest in being downtown in recent years.

Families catch a game at Canal Park. Couples stroll along the streets, stopping at Lock 3 for an outdoor concert. Professionals abandon their suburban homes for a trendy living experience downtown, where lively entertainment is only a few footsteps from their front door. Start out your day with a little history. Take a walk through Lock 3 Park and make sure to stop and look around. This green space in the middle of downtown can be a tranquil place to just relax. The Akron History Exhibit at Lock 3 highlights the history of this industrial city through displays about the manufacturing of canal boats, cereal, agricultural equipment and the tire industry. Worried that your children will get bored looking at displays? Direct them to the American Toy Marble Museum. This interactive section of the museum features marbles and toys that were found on the site itself. The site that Lock 3 currently rests on was once The American Marble & Toy Manufacturing Company.

For the past 60 years, visitors have come to Bath Township’s Hale Farm & Village to step back in time to explore the history of the Hale family farm and why they settled in the Cuyahoga Valley over 200 years ago. InHale, a new strategic initiative, invites guests to participate in crafting the entrepreneurial spirit, and share in our commitment to preserving the cultural landscape and sustaining social and financial impact through a hand-crafted way of life. by Molly Gase BLU Jazz+ brings a speak easy experience to the downtown music scene Looking for an experience that is beyond the norm? Head down to BLU Jazz+. This jazz venue brings the idea of cool speak easy to Downtown Akron. “The acronym is BeLowU, and the idea is to create a cool "speak easy" that you need to go down/get down into a cool groovy place to get into that chill space of mind to really appreciate the genre of a true American art form,” says Tony Troppe.

Started by a group of jazz lovers — Tom Strauss, Mike Wyatt and Troppe — BLU Jazz+ opened in October of 2014. Bringing the succulent tones of jazz to the historic arts district of downtown, Troppe says that it’s a great location to be. “Positive energy of a great place attracts great people. They are winding up at BLU to not miss the downbeat.”

What was the vision for BLU Jazz+?

The goal was to create a mid-century stylish and great gathering spot that offered the guests a metropolitan and timeless quality and decor. Guests often don't know what city they are in or what time period they are in.

Tell us a little about your location?

The raw basement space was converted into a classic club with exceptional sound equipment and acoustic treatment. The flowing open plan is designed with excellent site lines

Recording both video and audio in "real time" by our Sound Engineer (Joe Scott) also allows us to capture jazz history in the making and excites the performers and the audience alike.

Do you have a favorite performer? A favorite event?

BLU is becoming a hub for performers from around the world — we are actually realizing a self-proclaimed prophecy as jazz central. Joey DeFranceso, Theron Brown, Dan Wilson, Sammy Deleone, Cyrille Aimee — the list keeps growing and getting better weekly.

If you were a patron, why would you come back time and time again?

There is no place like BLU between New York and Chicago and beyond. The place is unique, very cool and the warm hospitality of the staff is gracious and efficient.

Why should people walk into the BLU Jazz+ when visiting downtown?

BLU is more than a color and their world will be changed for the better through an enriching art and culinary experience.

Satisfying your sweet tooth for over 80 years Storeowner reflects on tasty history.

The Peanut Shoppe of Akron is a staple to downtown. For those walking the streets, it’s a one-stop shop to satisfy your sweet tooth. This iconic store has been in downtown Akron for 83 years and has weathered the storm of changes that has swept the area. “It’s the impeccable smell of hot, freshly roasted peanuts that carry their way for two blocks on either side of the store [that has] helped establish the history and create memories that will never be forgotten,” says Marge Klein, the storeowner.

Why stay in downtown? Has there ever been any discussion about moving away from Downtown Akron?

The store has always been downtown.

I can’t imagine it ever being anywhere else. This is "home" for the Peanut Shoppe.

Who first got the peanuts roastin’?

In 1980 my dad, Jack Ashbrook, purchased the store from Joe Lampasone, who had owned the store for 30 years.

Out of all the peanuts, which is your absolute favorite?

I love all the peanuts and tree nuts that we sell. I do eat them every day.

What’s the most lovable thing about the Peanut Shoppe?

The best thing in the store is the wide assortment of nuts and candies, learning a little history and observing the memorabilia on our shelves and walls.

And I have to include our friendly staff, who put their customers first and are always eager to accommodate them.

What is one thing you were sad to see leave downtown?

We miss all of the retail businesses that were located up and down Main St. Those were good days. It brought more patrons to downtown, which was beneficial for our shop.

Have you always been in your current location or have you moved around?

The store was originally located at 139 S. Main St., which was north of Bowery St., approximately across from where the Cascade Plaza is situated. In 1937 it moved to 176 S. Main St. in the Whitelaw building, next door to the Civic Theatre. About 12 years ago, we moved to our current location, 203 S. Main St., across from Lock 3.

Any fun stories about the Peanut Shoppe over the years?

The peanut costume was worn by high school students who were employed at the store during the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. We enjoy listening to customers tell their stories of those days. They recall watching "Mr. Peanut" walk down Main St., passing out samples of peanuts. They also say that some [people] were actually afraid of him.

What is the coolest thing to come to downtown while you have worked there?

The baseball stadium, home of the RubberDucks. Lock 3 has also been a great addition to the area.

What does the future look like for the Peanut Shoppe?

We are keeping a positive outlook and are hoping that more businesses find their way to the downtown area. Foot traffic is what keeps our store going.

What treats are the fan favorites?

Our best sellers are honey cashews, chocolate covered pretzels, honey cinnamon almonds and dark chocolates.

Why should people walk into the Peanut Shoppe when visiting downtown?

People should visit the Peanut Shoppe to experience the tastes and smells of fresh roasted peanuts. Observing the old fashion mechanical weight scales and original gas peanut roasters, plus the showcases from the 1930s give you a feeling like you’re going back in time.

City life, small town feel After years away, Sarah Thomarios returns to an exciting Akron

If you’re looking for a new place to live in Akron, try downtown where there are an abundance of places to eat, hang out and lots to do. For Sarah Thomarios, the activity downtown is one of the reasons she loves her home at Canal Square. After living in Florida for about 20 years, she returned home to work for the family business just a couple of years ago.

From grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants to catching a concert at Lock 3 right from her window, downtown has a lot to offer a young thriving professional like Thomarios.

What drew you to downtown?

There’s a lot going on down there. I like to hike and the trails are close to home. In the evenings, it’s easy to get to a bar because it’s right down the street. There are also a lot of good restaurants to check out.

The best thing about living downtown is that it’s centrally located. If I wanted to go to Cuyahoga Falls it’s about 10 minutes away or Fairlawn is 15 minutes away. We can also go down to Green and that’s also about 15 minutes away.

Can you describe your apartment for us?

I live in a studio apartment on the lower level. It’s an open layout. My living room overlooks Lock 3 and if I open my window when there’s a concert, I can hear the whole thing.

I also have a small balcony that’s in the front of the building, so I get some outside space.

What are a few of your favorite spots?

I like to go to DBA and Bricco a lot because it’s an easy walk. I go to DBA for their muscles, and Bricco has the best appetizers. BLU Jazz+ is really cool. It has live music and is a chill, cool place compared to everywhere else because it’s brand new and has a fresh feeling. I also like to go to the baseball games across the street.

Would you recommend moving downtown to others?

I would! It feels like a big city, but you’re in a small town.

Everyone knows each other but it’s a big city feeling so you really get the best of both worlds.

The music makes the memories Jilly’s Music Room rocks downtown nightly with live music Music provides a soundtrack for our lives. We dance to it, chill out listening to it and mark the memorable moments of our lives with it in the background. Memories are made every night at Jilly’s Music Room in downtown’s Northside District.

With a sophisticated atmosphere, this live music venue showcases local, regional and national bands in a variety of genres. Jilly’s opened on Thanksgiving weekend in 2013 and has been rocking the house ever since. “Fun stories are created [at Jilly’s] every night,” says founder Jill Bacon Madden.

What is your favorite event? Do you have a favorite performer?

That's like asking us to choose a favorite child — we love them all!

If you were a patron, why would you come back time and time again?

The comfortable atmosphere, the fabulous music, and the fun.

What do you like about being located in downtown? What drew you there?

Downtown Akron is where things are happening and we can thank (recently retired) Mayor Don Plusquellic for that. His passion for downtown has been unparalleled for decades... everything good that's happening, is because of his tireless stick-to-itiveness, and the energy he created motivated people to follow his lead.

Twenty years ago, there wasn't much to be proud of — today, Downtown Akron boasts a minor league baseball stadium, public amphitheater, countless wonderful restaurants and bars, art galleries, beautiful landscaping, a leg of the Towpath Trail and rejuvenated canal, numerous private businesses, a convention center, a STEM school, a transit hub...and on and on.

Other than your business, what is the coolest thing to come to downtown?

We're very excited about the new Northside Courtyard Marriott scheduled to open in midNovember. Downtown needs a great new hotel.

What are 3 of the best things about Jilly’s?

The vibe, great live music and exceptional service.

People should visit to experience fantastic live music and to have a whole lot of fun.

Opening up the streets of Downtown Akron Open Streets is an event that does exactly what it sounds like. It opens the streets up to foot-traffic and allows citizens to connect with the city in a new way.

The first Open Streets event took place Sunday, May 17 from 11 to 4 p.m., closing off Main Street for 2.8 miles. Citizens were encouraged to walk, jog, bike and skateboard along the route.

“The goal behind it is to get people physically active and to get them engaged and really exploring their community in a new way,” says Brittany Schmoekel, community event coordinator from the City of Akron. “Sometimes when you’re rushing downtown you don’t pay attention to some of the shops that are there. This is a great way to get out and explore those shops.”

The event offers many fun activities, including yoga, zumba, raki and cardio classes, touch-a-truck, a basketball tournament for children ages 8 to 13, puttputt holes along the route, food trucks and more.

“We are highlighting certain areas with entertainment but it’s really about making your own urban playground experience and making it your own,” Schmoekel says.

Although Open Streets is new to Akron, places from Guatemala to Toronto and London have been doing this for a while, says Schmoekel. She added that studies have shown that cities that do this event more frequently, see more changes in the community.

Event organizers are hoping to put on the next Open Streets event sometime in October.

A social cinema experience Local independent cinema provides new culture to Downtown Akron

If you like to try new things and explore new places, take a trip to The Nightlight. A recent addition to downtown Akron, this independent cinema shows films you are unlikely to see anywhere else. Make it a date or a fun night out with friends and quench your thirst for new and exciting entertainment.

Steve Felix, the Nightlight’s executive director, says that the building was previously a document warehouse. “We did do a full renovation. It definitely wasn’t designed as a cinema,” chuckled Felix. How would you explain The Nightlight?

We show independent and foreign films six nights a week. We’re a full-time independent theatre. We have a full bar and we have a complete, full, social experience to watch a movie.

What was the idea behind this cinema?

The idea behind it was that Akron was one of the biggest cities in the country without an independent cinema. [These are the] movies that don’t always come to the multiplex. We wanted to fill that gap. We’ve been doing a film festival at the Akron Art Museum for several years, so we decided the best way to grow was to become a full-time, year-round venue.

You’ve been open for a little while now. How’s it going so far?

It’s been great, we’re really happy with the response.

Tell us about your current location.

We’re at 30 N. High St., which is what we’re calling the historic arts district, with Crave, Musica, BLU Jazz+ and Urban Eats. We’re really happy to be a part of that. We feel like we’ve got a wave of development and entertainment options right there. I looked at a bunch of other locations and that seemed to be the one. We also like the fact that it’s close to our close friends at the Akron Art Museum.

What is one of your favorite movie at the cinema?

I like “The Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.”

What keeps patrons coming back time and time again?

We’re showing movies that can’t be seen on the big screen anywhere else in the area.

There’s definitely a group of people that I’ve gotten to know there that I like to see movies with and share opinions.

What do you like about being downtown?

We love being close to some of the restaurants like Urban Eats, I eat there a lot. It’s where people are out and about I would say. It’s where places I really admire are, such as the Akron Art Museum. The density of different types of venues, like having a jazz club right there, is also very cool. The density in culture is high and getting higher.

Why should people walk in?

I think they are going to discover films that they might love, but might never see on a big screen locally.

Thriving in a new home Downtown provides new perspective for California native

People who don’t live in Downtown Akron sometimes think there is nothing going on down there, but don’t be fooled. Leave it to Shane Garst to tell you that downtown Akron is as busy and interesting as his home state of California.

The 36-year-old nurse anesthesia student left his home in California to study at The University of Akron. A small business owner, Garst has an online app for nurses. When he’s not studying, he is constantly exploring and enjoying downtown.

Can you tell us about your apartment?

I have a studio on the fifth floor of the 401 Lofts. This place is great. It’s very quiet and secure. We have a weight room downstairs, so I can just go down anytime 24 hours to work out. We have a swimming pool and coffee 24 hours a day; I like to get espressos down there.

Then there’s a lounge to hang out in. On every floor there’s a study lounge or a little movie room. This is the best place I’ve stayed.

How did you make your way from California to Akron?

I wanted to get away from California so that I could focus and study in a nice little area.

I felt that Akron was just what I was looking for. It’s small and has a lot to offer. I can walk everywhere and there’s a lot to do. I came across Akron while exploring different cities and I thought this was a great fit for me. I love it here, especially being downtown.

Why did you move downtown?

I moved downtown for the food, walkability and there’s always something going on. I felt that if I lived in the suburbs I would never come downtown. There are parades and festi-

What do you like about living downtown?

The best thing about living downtown are the walking trails behind Lock 3. You can just get out and walk. I also like being able to go to a baseball game and try different food anytime I want. There are so many options downtown.

Where do you like to hang out?

Lock 3 is great during the summer. [My friends and I] meet at Lock 3 and check out the bars across the street like The Lockview and Baxter's.

Why should people consider moving downtown?

I think people should move downtown because it has so much to offer. You don’t have to drive too much, you can park your car and leave it for weeks at a time. They have many food options, gyms, places to hang out, baseball, and parades. All the entertainment you want is pretty much at Lock 3. You can walk to UA if they have something going on. There are a lot of job opportunities in walking distance with the hospitals and small businesses.

Taking it Outside

Akron Art Museum’s Inside|Out brings art to 3 communities.

Beauty can be found all around us in The 330.

Gorgeous works of art rest in the boundaries of their frames, safely tucked into the Akron Art Museum, while just outside the walls of the museum the area boasts natural beauty to dazzle the eyes. Usually, you wouldn’t think that the two could be combined, however the museum’s Inside|Out project takes the artwork off the walls and onto those of the surrounding communities.

Inside|Out brings 30 reproductions of artwork outside, with 10 pieces placed throughout North Hill, Downtown Akron, and the Towpath Trail and Summit Metro Parks. Roza Maille, the project coordinator of Inside|Out, says that this project was actually started in Detroit in 2010 at the Detroit Institute of Art. “They have been doing the project very successfully and last year, through the Knight Foundation, a few of the other Knight cities got the chance to apply to do the project also. Akron is one of those,” says Maille.

The 30 pieces of art provide a sample of over 5,000 pieces in the museum’s collection. A contemporary and modern art museum, objects range from 1850 to present day.

The reproductions are weather proof and able to handle our finicky climate. “They were printed onto an aluminum material so they are all weather-proof. They have laminate on top and the frames are all clear-coated to protect them from the weather and moisture,” says Maille.

Though extremely detailed, Maille says that nothing takes the place of checking out an original. “We’re hoping people will be inspired to come see the original artwork. Even though the reproductions are very high quality, seeing the actual artwork in person is very important to make that direct connection.”

When strolling through downtown, be sure to look for the 10 pieces featured. “We’re trying to get people to want to explore different neighborhoods and see where the artwork is, as well as try to get them to appreciate the museum and come spend some time here,” says Maille.

All aboard The CVSR offers a fun alternative for getting around

The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall: E.J. was named in honor of the late Edwin J. Thomas, the former Chairman and CEO of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. This University of Akron-owned facility is home to the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and hosts a variety of programs, including the University Forum Speaker Series, the Broadway Series, Tuesday Musical, Akron Youth Symphony and the Children’s Concert Society.

One of the highlights of E.J. Thomas Hall is the movable 44-ton ceiling, which closes off the Flying and Grand balconies, creating a multi-level auditorium.

Lock 3: The name, “Lock 3 Park,” comes from the designation of the third of 24 locks of the Ohio-Erie Canal system. Removal in the 1990s of the parking deck of the famous department store, O’Neil’s, exposed the remains of the American Marble & Toy Manufacturing Company, which has since become the Marble Museum. Lock 3, Downtown Akron’s hub for outdoor entertainment, is located between the museum and the Akron Civic Theatre and has become the host to some of Akron’s biggest events.

Railroads seem to be a long forgotten source of transportation in this area.

However, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is keeping the tradition alive. If you’re in the Downtown Akron Area and are up for a little adventure and beautiful scenery, the CVSR is just what you’ve been waiting for.

After much success with the railroad in the Cleveland area, CVSR has teamed up with Downtown Akron Partnership to continue making Akron bike-friendly.

Bike Aboard! is one of the most popular programs. People can ride their bikes along the Towpath Trail, and stop at one of the stations to flag down a train.

For $3 they can put their bike aboard the train and ride back to their starting point.

Kim Shafron, the director of customer experiences, says to catch a ride, all you have to do is wave your hands in the air.

“All you have to do is flag down the train with both hands and one of our staff members will put the bike on and off and you hop in,” she says.

She is excited for Bike Aboard! because so much is going on in downtown Akron and people are starting to see the need to have more transportation without cars.

“There’s [so much] worry about where to park and how to get out and it’s so easy because the station takes care of everything,” she says. “You can get on the train with your children and their strollers — it’s easy transportation.”

“We’re working with the city right now to plan the actual locations of the bikes.

Once onboard, someone would ask how long they expect to have the bike and it would be priced accordingly.”

Riders also have the option of getting an all-day pass to hop on and off the train at various stations with the purchase of the National Park Scenic Coach Ticket.

Nature lovers can enjoy a three-hour birds-eye-view of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with the purchase of the Premium First Class or Premium Upper Dome ticket, while enjoying complimentary coffee, tea, water and a snack.

“It’s something about a train that is very nostalgic, romantic and hopeful,” Vadala says. “And I think it’s our responsibility to bring that to this generation. Everyone will have a different experience.”

A successful transplant After living in large cities, Ken Babby has found home sweet home in Akron

Ken Babby lives and works in downtown. The 35-yearold owner of the Akron RubberDucks moved to Akron in 2012 from Washington D.C. “I’m accustomed to living in big cities. I’m from Washington D.C., I spent time living up in Boston earlier in my career and literally moved from an apartment where I was living downtown in Washington D.C., a few blocks from the White House, to an environment like Akron and it was a little scary at first,” says Babby.

A few years down the road, Babby feels fully at home in his place at Northside Lofts and in Akron. “Northside Lofts is a wonderful community. I was fortunate enough to learn about it when I moved to Akron and I’m just very thankful to be part of such a great community downtown.”

Describe your home for us.

I was really looking for a modern feel and found that in the Northside Lofts. Not only was the building created with tremendous amenities — a world-class restaurant downstairs with DBA, plans for a hotel [that will be] terrific for guests that I have coming from out of town and friends that occasionally come visit me — but also the apartment that I live in is perfect. It has a large, spacious living and dining area.

It’s fun and overlooks the parks, so it’s really the best of both worlds for me.

What drew you to the downtown area?

First and foremost there’s sort of a wonderful revitalization and vibrance that has played out downtown in a really meaningful way. I think that part of what we’ve been able to do at Canal Park is to really restore entertainment and make it a destination for people in the community. I really wanted to be part of that not through just my work commitment, but also through my personal commitment. I’m very lucky to be in a community that really values the importance of having a vibrant and fun downtown. I really couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

What are a few of your favorite spots to hangout?

It has to be Canal Park and the RubberDucks games. My favorite restaurant in town is the Game Grill+Bar.

Would you encourage people to move downtown?

The proximity to what’s happening downtown between Lock 3, the new hotels, wonderful restaurants, the entertainment options, the new Mustard Seed [location], there’s so much happening in our community. In my opinion there’s no better place to be than downtown and the Northside Lofts provides you with wonderful urban downtown living.

anton is often called “America’s Playing Field” due to being the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However there’s a plethora of cultural and recreational activities for everyone in the family to enjoy, no matter the age group – and they don’t involve football.

Cultural Canton has a lot to offer when it comes to culture. Although there is no sign designating the Canton Cultural Center – it’s the large brick building located at the 1001 block of Market Avenue North.

Drama to die for Theatre lovers flock to the Players Guild, Northeast Ohio’s premier venue for quality live theatre. An art lovers home-away-from-home There is always something new to enjoy at The Canton Museum of Art, whether it’s a touring exhibition or an exhibit from their permanent collection. Athletically- inclined adventures Sluggers and Putters Family Fun Park in Canal Fulton is designated Ohio’s No. 1 adventure park with mini golf, go karts, bumper cars and boats, a rock-climbing wall and more. immediate area surrounding it is a refuge for birds, both year-round residents and migrants, as well as small mammals and deer. Often deer cross the boardwalk, usually in the evening when they feed and move around. However these deer are very wary of people who invade their little corner of the world.

The Jackson Bog is actually a fen, created hundreds of years ago when giant ice sheets covered this part of Ohio. It is an alkaline peat land, fed by natural springs, and home

Their signature dish, Eggs Benedict has been judged “Best in Ohio.” One favorite is the pumpkin pancakes. Served with cinnamon butter, this dish is available in the fall during pumpkin pie season.

Gregory’s also offers breakfast sandwiches, omelets, waffles and French toast. Greg and Jeannie Brown opened Gregory’s in 1983, adding a Celiac and Gluten free menu in 2007, which has become very popular with their customers. Make sure to save room for dessert – their rice pudding is out of this world.

Sharing is encouraged at Table 6 where the portions allow for everyone at the table to try a new dish. The restaurant combines innovative culinary cuisine with comfort food, such as three-cheese Mac and Cheese, and famous Chicken and Belgium Waffles.

Cocktails are prepared with fresh juices and herbs. Monday is Moscow Mule Day, with half price Mules, and tacos are free at the bar on Tuesday.

After success with two fine-dining restaurants – 91 and Wood Fired Oven – and a tavern – 3 Brothers Corner Tavern – Greg and Amy Goehring decided on a different theme for their fourth restaurant. An extensive patio encourages outdoor dining at Table 6 – weather permitting.

Expanding over the past 20 years they have added home furnishings, decorative arts and children’s clothing to their fine fashions. Today the third generation, Lauren Bosworth is active in their fashion business, and Veronica enjoys working with both her daughter and her granddaughter.

T

he open expanses of clear blue sky above a former golf course in Franklin Township, provide a playground for model aircraft to swoop, swirl and soar through. If you have a love or even a slight interest in flying planes, you might consider joining the Corsair Model Aircraft Club (CMAC) in its fairly new location in Franklin Township, Portage County.

The CMAC, formally located at the Summit County Fairgrounds, is a special interests club that has around 120 members who build and fly remote control model aircraft. Though many members of the club are retirees, it is very family friendly. “Our oldest active member is about 80,” says John Ashley, the Vice President of the club. “And our youngest is about ten. We have members all in between.”

No matter what age, the CMAC is a pursuit of passion. For Ashley, it’s a passion he has had for years. Growing up, he watched his father and uncle fly. He says that he has always wanted to fly his own airplane, but neither had the time or money. Renting a plane can be very expensive.

“Flying a full-sized aircraft is largely becoming a rich man’s sport,” he says. “Fuel alone for a full-sized aircraft starts at about $8 a gallon and they burn about eight gallons an hour. So the fuel gas alone of a little Cessna 172 is about $64 for fuel,” says Ashley.

After retiring from The University of Akron, where he was a T.V. producer and photographer for about 30 years, he took flight. “I sat in the back of the room for a long time and gradually got to know people.

I made connections with senior members who taught me how to fly model airplanes,” he says. “At that time we weren’t using simulators very much, so if you didn’t have an instructor to take you at hand, you spent most of your time fixing an airplane instead of flying it.”

The training program prepares new members for flight and has trained 12 people in the last year. (continued on page 4)

Dr. Thomas Malone chosen to lead Summa Health System

T

homas Malone, M.D., MBA, began his tenure as president and CEO of Summa Health System on Jan. 1. He replaces longtime CEO Tom Strauss, who retired after leading the organization for 15 years. A native of Niles, Ohio, near Youngstown, Malone joined Summa in 2013. In his former position as chief operating officer, he directed all clinical operations of Summa Health System.

Healthcare continues to evolve in terms of patient care. Malone believes Summa Health System is at the forefront of that evolution.

He discusses how he expects patient care will change in the future at Summa hospitals, health centers and other facilities.

What is your vision for Summa Health System?

Dr. Malone: We want to transition ourselves away from being a hospital company and into a population health management company.

Population health brings providers together to improve the health of the community. We have the pieces – a large medical group (both employed and independent), hospitals, home care and an insurance company (SummaCare) – to create that type of company. We need to put those pieces together to push the market toward value and away from the fee-forservice payment model that the industry currently uses.

How is the population health model different from how patients have received care in the past?

Dr. Malone: Traditionally, the system revolves around episodes of care. When patients get sick, they see their doctor or might go to the emergency room. But during the past five years there has been a push toward valuebased care, where doctors start making recommendations that improve the health of their patients – for example, colonoscopies at age 50 and screening mammograms at age 40.

Doctors have started putting those reminders into their systems to encourage their patients to undergo these types of tests so that we can start preventing rather than treating diseases, or at least finding problems when they are still treatable.

What does population health mean for the patient?

Dr. Malone: As we move toward population health, we will develop a new type of patientdoctor relationship. Most of the care will be given at the doctor’s office by creating a patient medical home where all aspects of a patient’s care are known by a team of clinicians. In this partnership, doctors work with patients on lifestyle changes, screening tests – all the areas that will improve their health.

Can you cite an example of how population health works?

Dr. Malone: NewHealth Collaborative, our accountable care organization (a group of doc-

tors, hospitals and other healthcare providers that come together voluntarily to give coordinated high quality care to Medicare patients), has shown significant improvement in its patients’ health during the past 18 months. As a result, it was the only ACO in Ohio to save money from its participation in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. This is a model for improving quality and reducing costs for a patient population. As we refine this population health model we can then educate the community on why they would want to partner with Summa.

Where do you envision Summa Health System in the next two to three years from the perspective of the patient care experience?

Dr. Malone: We want to be the organization that partners with the community. We want to be the organization that improves care because we treat the whole patient, not just worry about what’s bothering him/her today.

If you do want to, you get your own plane — we will help you assemble it and tune it up. [Once ready to fly,] an instructor will teach you to fly your own plane.”

After training, some members of the club build planes from scratch, creating custom planes that wow those observing on the ground. Whether it’s a replica WWII plane or a flying lawnmower, members of the CMAC come together to do what they love.

On the inside, neutralize colors and de-clutter.” Your realtor should offer a complimentary walk thru and suggestions to help get your house “show ready.” They should also prepare a thorough marketing analysis to help guide expectations when buying or selling a home.

Condos and cluster homes are also back in fashion. The active over 50 crowd is demonstrating an appreciation for one floor living, especially those that come with amenities like pools and tennis courts. Snowbirds who spend winters in warmer climates enjoy the peace of mind in knowing their maintenance will be taken care of and neighbors are close at hand to keep an eye on things.
