This photo is of Pete and Diane Kalgreen on vacation in Akron … Akron, New York that is! Akron, NY is a village of about 3,000, a little east of Buffalo. We found it just off the beaten path heading across I-90 on our way to do some hiking in the Adirondacks. It was well worth the side trip because we had lunch at the beautiful Akron House Restaurant where we took this picture, and where they treated us like visiting royalty.

We also experienced a new delicacy — beet chips! Much like potato chips but made from red beets, and they were really tasty. Sure wish we didn’t have to drive 200+ miles to get some more of those beet chips.

It’s About Friendship / . . . And golf. /

It’s called “Up North” even by those folks who live north of here.

In Mackinaw they say, “Let’s go down to ‘Up North.’ ” Doesn’t make a lot of sense to us, but a lot of things up this way don’t always make sense. The “Up North” I’m talking about is the very Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

threat of rain. While not on the beach, we are directly across the road from it, and the cloudbanks look dark and foreboding one minute and clear and bright blue the next. But unless it’s raining straight down, we are playing golf today.

We are here to play as much golf as possible in five days. Here is Harbor Springs, Mich., tucked into the northwest corner of the state on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s not known for its extraordinary golf courses, though they are abundant, and I doubt many others actually come here for the golf. There are abundant fishing, hunting and sightseeing opportunities, but we are mainly here for the friendship. Golf is just our way of expressing friendship and enjoying the give-and-take of convivial word jousting.

“Haven’t you played enough golf already?”

This is our third trip up here to play golf. The first was in ideal summer weather; the second, last September in a rare period of days in which the temperature never got out of the 40s and the wind never dipped below 25 mph.

This is mid-May, and the temperature is in the 50s and 60s with little wind, but a continual

We are here as the guests of Bert Couch, a playing partner of only a few years, whose family has owned this cabin in the woods since the ‘60s and will host its fifth generation when his newly born granddaughter dips her tiny toes in the sand this summer. We all met at First Congregational Church of Akron, where the idea of golf was very far from our minds. Larry Becker and I are the only ones who still belong to the church, but Larry is very active in church administration, sings in the choir and puts on the Dr. Hudson Memorial Golf Outing for the church every year. Larry and Bert have been friends since they were eight years old. Bob Shell is the fourth member of our group and provides all of us with endless puns. We laugh whether they’re funny or not because we like him so much. So goes friendship.

The real jewel of the area is Petoskey, about five miles south.

It’s a town that’s very cute and very aware of it. It’s home to some of Detroit’s richest auto barons and their descendants.

The town is based on the Chautauqua, NY model where residents agree to only live here in the summertime and invite renowned lecturers to speak at weekly forums held in the town center. This small lakefront section is made up of million-dollar Victorian-era homes that face the setting sun and are so cute that they illicit “aws” and “ohs” from everyone who sees them.

The town is very proper, and the schools are well-funded.

We’ll be here for another couple of days, in which time, we will have played enough golf for our significant others to say, “Haven’t you played enough golf already?” as we put our clubs in the car to go at it again next week when we should be mowing the lawn or trimming the hedges. And, of course, it really isn’t about golf at all, but about friendship and a much more enjoyable game for all of us.

DM: Yes. If you have to have something, then have a little of it and move on. A word of advice: It’s best to eat it after a workout, that way you’ve earned it. Or, you can plan to do a little extra cardio to work it off.

How often do you workout, and what’s your routine?

DM: Currently I’m training biceps/ triceps/chest one day, shoulders/abs one day, back one day, and legs one day. I change this up from time to time to keep the body changing. I also do 30 minutes of treadmill, elliptical, stepper and bike throughout the week.

Why did you decide to write an e-book on treadmill workouts? Are you planning a hard-copy edition?

DM: I was looking for such a book and couldn’t find it. It’s a nice challenge to have a program written out to follow and try to improve on it each time you do it. It also helps the time pass too. There are no plans for a hard copy yet.

My husband and I are training for a 5K this summer, and we’ve never done anything like this before.

-- First of all, are we nuts?

DM: No, not nuts. This is an excellent goal! A 5K was one of my first goals.

-- Second, any words of advice?

DM: Buy my e-book and do the treadmill interval workouts. They’re the best way to increase your endurance.

-- Third, what works best for managing post-workout pain: A) Advil B) Tylenol C) A long, hot shower D) A pitcher of margaritas E) All of the above DM: I like your answers but I find that a massage, Motrin or taking a bath in Epsom salt with a few drops of eucalyptus oil does the trick too.

What advice would you give to people who make excuses about not getting healthy?

DM: Find a specific time that is open almost every day, designate that as your exercise time and stick to it. The hardest part about working out is walking through the front doors of the gym. The discipline will come with time, I promise.

DM: Reading “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne, “Thank You Power” by Deborah Norville, “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield and “Mutant Message Down Under” by Marlo Morgan.

I also like walking/riding my bicycle outdoors.

I like the Bike & Hike Trails the best since they’re paved; the Towpath Trails are mostly crushed limestone, and my sinuses aren’t particularly fond of the dust.

You’ve said “Being healthy starts on the inside.” What does that mean?

DM: The best way to transform is from the inside out. Take ownership and responsibility for the way you are today, and vow to make your body better by being patient and loving to yourself. Never, never, never think negative things about yourself. If you do, switch your thoughts around to the positive immediately.

How do you maintain such a positive attitude?

DM: When I’m having a bad day, I start listing — in my head — all the things I’m thankful for at that very moment, and I feel better right away. /Writer Abby Cymerman is managing editor of akronlife. Every year, the displays at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens focus on a specific theme, and this season’s exhibits are simply magnificent. “The Art of Living Beautifully” focuses on culture and the arts — a nod to Gertrude Seiberling, the wife of F.A. Seiberling, who was known for her grace and style.

When visiting Stan Hywet, stop in the Manor House to see “Finer Things: Jewelry & Accessories from the 1880s-1930s” — now through October 7. Guestcurated by Elyse Karlin, this exhibit features jewelry from the Victorian era, Edwardian period, Art Nouveau style and Arts and Crafts style, as well as gorgeous Art Deco pieces similar those

Fashions of the time period are part of the exhibit, including Mrs. Seiberling’s wedding dress.

This exhibit has been beautifully organized in the Music Room and gives visitors an opportunity to see classic examples of “bling” from bygone times. Want to see a Cartier necklace? Delicate hair decorations made of ivory? Purses embellished with jewels? If you love fashion and history, you’ll love this display.

Bursting into Song / A Love Letter to My Town /

If you were lucky enough to catch the Akron Symphony’s one-night-only performance of the Broadway musical, “Titanic,” in mid-April, you might have seen me.

This show was the first-ever staged Broadway musical performed by the Akron Symphony.

As you can guess, they were a far cry from your average pit orchestra; the music was simply outstanding. These were 45 world-class musicians directed by a world-class conductor; local people, some of them our neighbors and friends.

I was the one giving a standing ovation with tears in her eyes.

I wasn’t crying because I was surprised that (spoiler alert) the ship sank. I’ve seen enough documentaries about the Titanic to know how the story ends, and heck, when the James Cameron movie opened (and I’m talking the lowtech version way back in 1997), I saw it from the front row – three times.

No, I was crying for a different reason.

When the show ended, my husband took one look at the tears welling up in my eyes and put his arm around me. Above the audience’s loud applause, I shouted in his ear, “I’m so proud of our little town.”

And the actors were not strangers to the Akron Civic stage. They were what you’d call local talent.

Musical theater majors from Kent and Baldwin-Wallace, members of the Akron Symphony Chorus and Gospel Meets Symphony chorus, local people singing their hearts out, just for us, the audience.

And what a crowd it was. Both the orchestra level and balcony of the Civic were packed with every age of audience-member. There were senior adults, some who may be season ticket holders but never saw the symphony perform this kind of show before. And there were parents with grade-schoolaged children, kids who perhaps had never experienced the excitement of a Broadway show before.

All dressed for a night on the town. Our town.

The second the last note was sung, everyone rose to their feet.

It’s wasn’t the kind of standing O where you rise just because the june 2012

person in front of you did, in an awkward moment of peerpressure. It was a true standing ovation … one from the heart.

It was the people of this city showing their appreciation for the talent of this city.

Even after the lights came up, my husband and I stood at our seats, watching the audience maneuver up the aisles of the Civic. The performance itself was so awesome, the musical journey so magnificent, I needed a moment to catch my breath.

A lady in our row squeezed by and jokingly asked if we were waiting for a second performance. I said, “If they’d do another show, I’d stay for it,” and she nodded in agreement.

behind us told her friend that she felt like bursting into song.

That’s how I felt too.

When we exited to the Bowery Street parking lot, there were groups of people outside, waiting for their valeted cars, making plans for the rest of their evening, taking their time, in no hurry to head home. “This,” I said, to my husband, “Is what downtown should look like every Saturday night.”

I don’t know whose idea it was to bring this production to the Civic stage but I’m grateful they had the vision and the commitment to make it happen.

I’m so proud of our little town.

t’s Saturday night at Giant Eagle — date night for Chane and Kelly Cline.

While their two youngsters play in the store’s Eagle’s Nest child care room, the East Canton couple strolls down the grocery store aisles, pairing coupons with sale items on their shopping list. He’s a deputy officer. She’s a flight attendant.

Alone time is precious, and savings equally so, to the Clines — who credit their debt-free lifestyle, in part, to couponing.

“I love to see how much I save each trip,” says 33-yearold Chane, admitting that he’d never done the family grocery shopping until bitten by the extreme couponing bug several months ago. While the Clines’ version pales in comparison to the savings portrayed on TLC’s megahit “Extreme Couponing,” the Clines do shave about $150 from their monthly grocery expenses using coupons.

The Clines have joined the ranks of Greater Akronites who’ve kissed goodbye late-night runs to the grocery store or, worse, the convenience store, paying top dollar for everything from toilet paper to toothpaste. In the throes of a tough economy, lots of locals have decided that if shoppers on a reality TV show can use coupons to reduce $400 grocery bills to 20 bucks plus change, why can’t they?

Whether you love it, hate it or are morbidly fascinated by it, TLC’s “Extreme Couponing” has caused quite the stir since its well-timed December 2010 premiere, motivating consumers feeling the recession’s financial sting or the desire to ward it off to gut-check their grocery bills and to reconsider those coupon inserts falling from the Sunday paper.

“I saw the show and said, ‘I can do that,’ ” recalls Nikki Shearer. “My [grocery] bill now is between $50 and $60 a week, but that feeds our entire family of four.”

Like the Clines, 26-year-old Shearer of Medina has incorporated serious couponing into her shopping repertoire — and makes no apologies.

“I don’t think it’s embarrassing to save money,” says Shearer. “I think people should be embarrassed that they’re not saving money.”

She then organizes her coupons in a binder by category: food, health and beauty, cleaning, paper products and miscellaneous.

Binder in tow, she heads to the market, where she uses coupons on sale items, doubles the coupon discounts at stores like Giant Eagle and adds Catalinas (register-printed coupons) to the mix. “It’s the perfect trifecta,” she says. “It’s constantly trying to make sure you get the best bargain for the buck.”

Now a mother of two daughters, back to work as a full-time teacher and with all-but-dissertation for her Ph.D., Steigerwald puts her coupon savings in college and wedding accounts for Mia and little sister Meghan. Though she may no longer need to practice extreme couponing, she maintains a value-oriented mindset shared by fellow shoppers. In fact, the Fourth Annual RedPlum Purse String Study released third quarter 2011 reveals that 96 percent of the 23,300 survey respondents would continue to use coupons even if they won the lottery.

Cline, on the other hand, admits to nothing. “If you’re a guy, keep it a secret,” he warns. “Other guys will make fun of you.”

Hey, Big Saver he decorated “big spender” of yesterday loses the popularity contest to today’s big saver. These days, coupon use is explosive, so much so that shoppers saved $3.7 billion using them in 2010, the first rise in coupon use since 1992, according to the annual Topline U.S. CPG Coupon Facts.

Big savings inspired Chane Cline to step up his couponing strategy early on. “It was like a game just to see how much I saved,” says Cline, about the savings totals printed at the bottom of Giant Eagle receipts: sale-item savings, topped with double coupons, topped with fuel perks.

“If I save 50 percent, it’s a good shopping trip,” says Cline about food purchases. Over at Walgreens, he saves as much as 85 percent on household and personal items but has learned through experience to resist unnecessary purchases — recalling the Ben Gay surplus he snagged for 30 cents a tube.

Coupon use is even more explosive here in the Buckeye State: Ohio ranked the No. 1 coupon-using state in 2010, according to data collected by Coupons.com. What’s more, a 2009 Neilson Group survey revealed that a new breed of couponers has emerged: middle- to upper-class women younger than 54 with families and household incomes of $100,000 or more.

Among the 73 percent of consumers who report using coupons regularly, Sara Steigerwald of Osnaburg, near Canton, says it’s less of a hobby and more a way of life. After years of infertility treatments, the arrival of baby Mia and the desire to stay home with her newborn for the first year, Steigerwald says that necessity drove her to couponing five years ago.

“I always clipped coupons,” Steigerwald says. “But it wasn’t until my maternity leave when I realized serious couponing was a great way to … make our budget. The bills were still coming in, but lowering food costs was an easy fix. It’s a lifestyle change.”

That lifestyle includes Sunday morning jaunts to the local gas station or Giant Eagle, where Steigerwald snatches up four or five newspapers. She adds her home-delivered Canton Repository to the fold, pulls the coupon inserts and sets them aside to clip in her spare time.

“I work out five days a week, and even I don’t need that much,” he says.

Buying in Bulk vs. Hoarding hough most products go on sale at least once every three months, a sale price may not be a great deal; pairing sale prices with brand-name product coupons (which usually appear quarterly) might give you a great deal. The best deals, however, usually come along once a year and are generally predictable — so knowing when rock-bottom prices and coupons will arrive is key.

In the know, Steigerwald buys a three- to four-month supply of specific products at a time. For example, in March — frozen food month — she purchased a supply to meet her family’s needs for the next few months, no more, no less.

“It’s not about feeding your stockpile. It’s about feeding your family. It’s not doing any good if it’s on a shelf looking like a trophy,” says Steigerwald, who shares coupons, shopping tips, savings resources and charitable giving options on her website, Sisters Shopping on a Shoestring (www.sistersshoppingonashoestring.com).

Steigerwald’s modest storage space consists of two shelves in addition to her kitchen cupboards. “If it doesn’t fit, it’s got to go. If you have extra, give it away,” she says.

The Clines also stock up on necessities, purchased in bulk on sale and with coupons and stored on three 6-foot plastic shelves — just enough to keep them in the black until the next promotion. “We don’t have our kids’ closets full,” says Cline.

University of Akron alumna Rachel Krych, 34 — a couponing columnist for “The Chronicle-Telegram” — makes it a point to touch on the topic of hoarding during the couponing classes she teaches.

“A lot of people do have huge stockpiles, but having a huge stockpile and hoarding can be completely different things,” explains Krych, citing an episode of “Extreme Couponing” during which a woman brought groceries home and threw them into a room, still in bags. “That would be hoarding, as opposed to keeping an organized stockpile. Personally, I don’t want toilet paper in my kids’ rooms and I want to be able to park in my garage.”

The FYI on OCD esides hoarding, extreme couponers often contend with another mislabel: OCD. Steigerwald describes herself as a regimented shopper with a touch of OCD (Obsessive Coupon Disorder). But not to worry, says Ed Novak, an Akron-based professional clinical counselor. Novak says a little OCD (as in, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is perfectly normal.

“As a society, we tend to like OCD. I want my accountant, my surgeon, my mechanic to be OCD. It’s not a bad thing. We all have some degree of it,” says Novak, hinting that couponers get labeled OCD when they interrupt the flow of another’s day. “When [OCD] is in our favor, we sometimes have a tendency to [overlook] it. But when somebody has 20 tubes of toothpaste … or has five inches of coupons — and we have to wait in line behind them — then it becomes a concern.”

Steigerwald echoes Novak’s sentiment, advising couponers to practice moderation and consideration. “Never clear a shelf,” she says. “There’s always someone who needs a product more than you do.”

Common-Sense Couponing isters Shopping on a Shoestring, which Steigerwald and her sister-in-law started in 2010, draws about 21,000 visitors a month. Out of all the websites in cyberspace, Steigerwald’s site ranks about 25,000th — a significant leap from the 900,000th-ish spot where it started, and telling of population amid hard times.

“We hear a lot of stories from people out there hurt through the recession, losing jobs and medical coverage,” she says. “It puts a face on what we do and gives the site a purpose. It’s almost like a ministry.”

Stacy Smith of Bath knows the fallout of the economic downturn all too well. An executive recruiter, Smith says corporate hiring freezes diminished her workload and income, triggering her family’s need to pare expenses. A fixed mortgage and steady utility bills left Smith with one surefire target: her family’s food bill.

Like Steigerwald, Smith shops for local deals and saves 50 to 70 percent on average shopping trips for her family of three.

She spends an hour or two a week clipping and organizing coupons and matching them with store specials. Stack a store coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon, double it, add a register reward and you’ve got a deal, she says. cut here!

bargain shoppers more than others. Aldi might offer produce prices at a steal, but doesn’t accept coupons. Likewise, the grocer doubling coupons might charge higher-than-average prices on produce.

While Smith’s and Steigerwald’s websites — along with the couponing classes they offer periodically — provide plenty of coupons, store flier specials with coupon matchups and links to freebies, the magnitude of savings portrayed on “Extreme Couponing” isn’t typical for Akron.

“It’s absolute fiction,” Smith says. “In our area in Ohio, no store would allow purchases of those quantities.”

Fiction or not, extreme or moderate, couponing isn’t for everyone. And who can blame antagonists for reasoning: Why cut coupons? Just cut me a deal!

“I personally hate couponing,” says Akronite Mary Ethridge. “It actually angers me. Just give me a god**** discount. Don’t make me get out my daughter’s second-grade safety scissors and do anything remotely resembling crafting, which I also hate.” / Since reporting this story, Denise Henry has already replaced her tattered envelope with a wallet-size coupon organizer. She’s seriously considering an upgrade, waiting, of course, for a back-to-school special on binders.

“If you save $100 a month after investing two hours a week, you’re paying yourself,” says Smith, who never spends more than $1 for a box of cereal or $7 for a 33.9-ounce canister of Folgers coffee — adding that she’s no longer brand loyal. “Hefty or Glad? Does it really make a difference? I’ve tried out a lot of products I wouldn’t otherwise have tried and found them better than the products I was loyal to for a very long time.”

But abandoning brand favorites doesn’t mean comprising quality, says Smith, who began blogging her savings gospel in 2009.

Most of Hamrick School’s graduates are employed by trucking companies, and representatives of the trucking companies actively serve on the Program Advisory Committee. This group aids in keeping the overall quality of training high and advises the school on aligning the curriculum in accordance with the current trends in the trucking industry.

Now in Uniontown, Kovatch Castings manufactures complex precision cast components for the aerospace, military, medical and other general industries. The company maintains the highest quality standards including AS 9100c, ISO 9001 and Nadcap. Its customer list includes Boeing, Airbus, Honeywell and General Electric, just to name a few, and the company ships across the country and outside of the U.S. Kovatch Castings moved to Uniontown in 1991 with approximately 45 employees.

Since then, the company has had two major expansions and purchased additional land and buildings attached to its primary plant. The 75,000-square-foot-plus facility now operates 24/7 with over 180 employees. Kovatch says his company is on its way to achieving its 2012 sales goal of $18.5 million.

“There’s still an important place for manufacturing in our country,” he says. “We have a responsibility and privilege to carry on the vision Frank started, to operate with honesty and integrity, and to be a small light that influences a big world in a positive way.”

You probably have all kinds of numbers stored in your memory—phone numbers, PINs, your kid’s GPA, your checking account balance, etc. But what about the other important numbers, the ones related to your health?

For long-term heart health,

it’s important to “know your numbers,”

especially your cholesterol levels and that sometimes hard-to-understand blood pressure reading.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls as it circulates through your body. Throughout the day, blood pressure normally rises and falls, but it can cause health problems if it stays high for a long time.

The good news is that high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. You can help lower your blood pressure by making healthy changes in your lifestyle.

Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The first (systolic) number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The second (diastolic) number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart rests between beats.

Someone with a systolic pressure of 120 and a diastolic pressure of 80 has a blood pressure of 120/80, or “120 over 80.”

Adults should have blood pressure below 120/80. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is 140/90 or higher. Many people fall into the category in between, called prehypertension. When blood pressure is high, it starts to damage the blood vessels, heart, and kidneys. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, and other problems. High blood pressure is called a “silent killer,’’ because it doesn’t usually cause symptoms while it is causing this damage.

Statistically, women are about as likely as men to develop high blood pressure during their lifetimes. However, for people under 45, the condition affects more men than women. For people 65 and older, it affects more women than men. Racially and ethnically, African Americans develop high blood pressure more often, and at an earlier age, than whites and Mexican Americans do. Among African Americans, more women than men have the condition.

2008 Clos de los Siete Mendoza, Argentina

Clos de los Siete means “vineyards of the seven,” and this winery is situated at the foot of the Andes, south of Mendoza. In 1988 Michel Rolland was working in Argentina as a wine consultant and discovered this fantastic wine-growing region. Rolland consults for more than 100 wineries around the world. After visiting the area several times, he convinced a team of seven men and women — all from France — to start a winery in the Mendoza. Every year the blend may change a little but this wine also scores 90 or more points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate every year. It just might be the best-valued wine from Argentina.

This year Robert Parker rated the 2008 Clos de los Siete – 90 points. The blend is 56 percent Malbec, 21 percent Merlot, 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 percent Syrah and 2 percent Petit Verdot. It has been described as “round, ripe and surprisingly complex for a wine of its humble price. It is an outstanding value.”

This wine comes from low yields, and the grapes are hand-picked and gravity-fed into the winery. Matured in new French oak barrels prior to release, this wine is an excellent complement to steaks and chops, and it can be stored for five to six years.

Chow Down at the Chowder House Café The Chowder House Café at 2028 Chestnut Blvd. in Cuyahoga Falls was a place I’ve wanted to try for a long time. I wasn’t disappointed. The restaurant offers entrees using fresh, seasonal ingredients. The atmosphere is cozy with lots of unique art all around.

Rushing the Growler Since when do breweries and grocery stores offer “to go” draft craft beer? This burgeoning regional trend offers Akronites an economical way to drink the good stuff.

A full growler provides the same amount of beer as five 12-ounce bottles (actually, it’s more like 5.3 bottles), so you’re getting a bit less than a six-pack.

But the upshot is getting that draft taste.

“You can take the freshness home with you,” Menning says. “It’s a different experience than bottles.”

Growlers are particularly popular in Northeast Ohio, says John Najeway, partner and co-owner of Thirsty Dog. “It’s amazing,” he says. “I was in Cincinnati and Columbus recently, and growlers are virtually nonexistent there except in the breweries.”

So why are they trending here? “Northeast Ohio is saturated with great breweries,” Najeway says.

“There are 60 licensed breweries right now in Ohio, and more than half of those are in Northeast Ohio. … There’s just an appreciation for it here. It used be that we were trying to convert people from drinking fuzzy yellow beer, but now you have people growing up with nothing but craft beer.”

You can also buy most of Ohio Brewing Co.’s beers in growlers — $15 to buy and fill; $10 refills; some seasonal beers are more. “We’ll also fill your growler for $11 with our regular beers — but I know you want an OBC one!” says owner Chris Verich, adding that the brewery is open for growler fills by appointment, so call ahead.

Where you won’t be rushing the growling: Hoppin’ Frog — since they don’t sell keg beer.

Milk, Bread and Beer While growlers sales have long been a staple for breweries, grocery stores have emerged as popular venues for a fill. In the last year, growler stations have opened at three Acme Fresh Market locations, West Point Market and Buehler’s in Medina.

Growlers originated in the 1800s in the form of lidded metal pails. The Oxford English Dictionary

dates the first usage of the term as a vessel for beer in 1888. Back then, factory hands would hire boys to fetch beer for them. The pails became known as growlers because of the sound lids made as carbon dioxide escaped from the beer. As the boys would ferry the beer to the factory workers, they were said to be “rushing the growler,” a phrase that later came to refer to drinking freely.

This coming year, growlers may become even more popular, thanks to a law passed by the Ohio Legislature in December 2011. House Bill 243 will allow retail stores with a D-8 liquor license to sell growlers. With the law in effect, Acme already has plans to expand its growler program.

Specials on Tap Providing beer in growlers has inspired grocers to put unique offerings on draft to augment traditional beer sales — all “part of the fun,” according to Brian Berg, beer department manager at West Point Market, which keeps four beers on tap. “We don’t really have a specific science to how we pick beers. We tend to get beer that’s only available on draft, special one-offs or special limited beers that aren’t in six-packs. The beers we try to bring in are unique and rare.”

“We have a few locations in mind — Montrose, Hudson, Kent and maybe on the east side of Akron,” says Jon Albrecht, category manager at Acme in charge of the beer and wine department. “I don’t know if it will be every single store, but we want to strike while the iron’s hot. The fad is extremely popular now.”

The same is true for Thirsty Dog, with its 12 beers on tap that aren’t all are available in stores or bottles. In that case, the only option aside from a keg is a growler. “If you want to get something fresh and new, you can get it in a growler,” says Najeway.

“It’s also good for people that are having a party. They can get a couple growlers or use them to taste different beers before making the commitment to buy a keg.”

Prior to passage of the new state law, retailers with a D-8 license could only sell beer and wine in its original containers.

Therefore, if a store had a keg, the beer could only be sold by the keg and not in a take-away container. The store would need an additional license to sell growlers.

Growler stands have also prompted grocery stores to host special tasting events. Both Acme and West Point Market are planning to incorporate more events to promote their draft beer selection, with costs ranging $25 to $30, including beer samples and food pairings.

Acme has established growler stands at its stores on Bailey Road in Cuyahoga Falls, on Manchester Road in South Akron and in North Canton. Each store features six taps that rotate weekly.

Drink Up

“It’s the world we live in,” says Albrecht, about the role the economy is playing in the recent uptick in growler popularity.

“People are spending more and more time cooking and entertaining at home. The growler gives them a fun vessel to bring home beer or take it to a party and talk about it. They can get great draft beer way cheaper than at their corner spot.”

Other growler venues can be found in Kent at 101 Bottles of Beer on the Wall, Riverside Wine and Beer, and Ray’s Place. And these are just local options.

Everyone knows that beer only lasts as long as it takes to drink it, but growlers have a short shelf life. It is, after all, draft beer.

“Growlers are good for about five to six days unopened,” says Albrecht. “Once opened, it depends on how much you drink that first session. It’s kind of like a two-liter of pop. If you drink a lot, it will go flat quicker. If you just have a glass, it should be good for another few days.”

“Like” Your Local Growler Stand In the age of social media, it’s no surprise that your local growler station probably has its own Facebook page and Twitter account. Acme has one of the more active fan pages for its wine and beer department, with category manager Jon Albrecht himself often updating the beers on tap at each location and polling customers about which beers they’d like to see in stores.

“Facebook has been a neat part of the whole thing,” says Albrecht. “It started as the wine and beer department page, but it has turned into a live bar and tap list. We have about 600 people on the page, and … we want to get the message to them about what’s available and hear their response. The people on our fan page know a heck of lot more about beer than I do.

“It gives customers a direct way to talk to the decision-maker, and that’s me,” Albrecht adds. “When someone asks for an item they drank on vacation and I can tell them it’ll be at the store Friday at 3 for the weekend, that makes an impact.”

Buehler’s and West Point Market also have a strong Facebook presence, posting the revolving beers on tap and prices for a fill.

Gluten-Free Mom tastes the Vicky Salad …

I’m not a fan of Brussels sprouts but since they’re 2012’s trendy veggie, I thought I’d try them on this salad. Rather than being thinlysliced and marinated as the menu describes, they were chunky and raw. They seemed to be drizzled with lemon rather than marinated in it, and a stronger citrus flavor would have offset their bitterness.

The shaved Romano and roasted walnuts added a rich umami flavor, and the balsamic reduction was sweet but not cloying. Looking back, I should have added grilled chicken breast to it because the salad wasn’t very filling.

Love the gumball machines, filled with colorful bouncy balls and marbles, that decorate the restaurant.

teckenBERRY tastes the Mac ‘n’ Cheese with eggplant and side salad with balsamic reduction …

I’ve tried a few macaroni mixtures over the years, and while most of them were artfully constructed (usually after midnight on a Saturday), it never occurred to me to add eggplant to my concoctions. Why? Because it’s eggplant — you use condiments and other foods to disguise it, and it has an “interesting” texture.

This dish, however, is surprisingly scrumptralescent. The texture of the eggplant blends well with the mac ‘n’ cheese and gives a lightness to this dish.

The restaurant offers both balsamic vinaigrette for your salad and a balsamic reduction, served separate from the EVOO. You choose how strong you want the vinegary sweetness to be.

The ambiance suffers a bit at the hands of minimalism but if you’re a dog lover, you may find the Dalmatian artwork very amusing.

The Beekeeper’s Wife tastes the Loaded Veggie Mac ‘n’ Cheese and side salad …

According to the menu, this mac ‘n’ cheese is filled with “spinach, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, olives and love.” It’s served with a nice mixed greens salad with olive oil and balsamic reduction. The entree was delicious with just the right blend of cheese and veggies.

I’m a tea-a-holic, and my tea was served in a large pot. The water was hot, as it needs to be for a perfect cup of tea.

My meal would have tasted even better if the owner could do something with the decor. He needs to inspire the senses with something more than the food.

The Finicky Foodie tastes the Tricolor Salad …

I love the personal touch of the photography and paintings decorating the walls, created by the owner’s wife Vicky. Although I don’t know the owner, I know he loves dogs and names sandwiches after his wife, so I already like him.

I had a tempered relationship with the Tricolor Salad. The ingredients were lovely: crisp lettuce, perfectly ripe and buttery avocado, juicy deep-red beets and generous shards of Swiss cheese. The balsamic reduction had a “nice personality,” but all of the ingredients together lacked chemistry. “I respect you Tricolor Salad, but I don’t want to marry you!”

The Open-Minded Omnivore tastes the Stuffed French Toast …

Nothing on the menu really appealed to me but when the waitress mentioned the special of the day — French Toast, stuffed with cream cheese and blueberries — I took her suggestion. My meal came with fresh fruit, including melon, an orange slice, raspberries and grapes.

All in all, it was nothing great for the money. I’d rather eat at Bob Evans. And the atmosphere in the restaurant was too plain.

The Spicy Vegetarian tastes the Veggie Quiche with fruit …

The decor in this restaurant reminds me of a strip-mall breakfast joint in central Florida, the kind of place my grandma would take me to.

I had quiche with onions, olives and goat cheese. It was green and fresh, and the goat cheese was subtle. I’m not a huge fan of quiche but this one could appeal to a lot of people. My favorite part of the meal was the side of fresh fruit. Overall, it was a good lunch.

hen Barbara Abbott and her friends visited Scottsdale, Ariz., they experienced the city through a combination of culture and cuisine.

“We started out in the historic ‘Western’ part of town and ended up in the modern, colorful arts district. We liked one of the restaurants on our tour so much we went back there that same night for dinner,” says Abbott.

I

n many ways, the Canton Charge resembled the city’s brash, young basketball stars, who once inhabited vacant playgrounds and blacktops on 25th Street and at Clarendon School ... No big crowds and no nets. Only a will to succeed.

Less than a year ago, the Charge didn’t exist. Today, it’s the hottest ticket in town, but it wasn’t as easy to accomplish as a wide-open layup or a breakaway dunk.

The management had to work quickly to not only hit the floor with a new basketball team, but also create a good reason to keep local fans coming back to the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

The Charge are members of a 16-team NBA development league, which, in Canton’s case, provides a pipeline of players to the Cleveland Cavaliers once the parent club needs that player’s services or the player is good enough to advance to Quicken Loans Arena.

Before this season, Canton’s entry into the D-League was a team that was joined at the hip with the Erie Bayhawks. The Erie team was owned by a local businessman, and its players were being groomed to one day play for the Cavaliers or the Toronto Raptors.

Sounds good, but Scott Woodruff, Charge senior vice president and COO, says Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, Charge general manager Wes Wilcox and team officials wanted something even better.

“What we wanted was a team in Ohio, and for the players to play in a system that the Cavaliers played,” says Woodruff. “Toronto had that same wish. We wanted to use the same vocabulary at this level as what they use in Cleveland.”

But the move to Canton wasn’t announced until July of last year, and the season tipoff was November 25.

Normally, a team requires 1-1/2 years to settle into a new community and make its mark. The Charge had four months — not exactly a seamless transition.

“We had two employees, no team name yet and no nets,” recalls Woodruff. “It was a fire drill.”

What the Charge did have was community acceptance from the start, provided they extended a warm welcome to its paying customers to make sure they returned.

They did. Customer service has been top shelf, and Canton’s fans have responded. Average attendance the first year at the Civic Center was 2,797 in a 4,000-seat facility with an average ticket price of just under $15.

The team’s affiliation with the NBA and the Cavaliers is a huge plus too. “One of every four players in the NBA today came through the D-League,” says Woodruff. “So having a good D-League team in place is critical for a franchise.”

In the team’s inaugural season, fans have witnessed the talents of such players as Luke Harangody, Manny Harris and Christian Eyenga.

C

anton and Stark County have already demonstrated their passion for high school football and basketball. The city has been home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1963, and its annual extravaganza each summer is the envy of every city in America of similar size and demographic. How would the Charge be accepted?

“We’ve had tremendous feedback, and we’ve been leading the D-League in new season ticket sales,” says Woodruff. “It’s really been humbling and feels very good. I’ve had e-mails from people and have been stopped in the street by those who just want to say, ‘Thank you for being here.’ Even my shoe repairman said ‘Thank you.’ ” “Mayor (William) Healy, Derek Gordon and the entire office at City Hall, and (Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce President) Dennis Saunier have been instrumental in our success. They’ve opened their arms to us. There’s a rich sports heritage in this market.”

But the Charge needed more than a handshake and a welcome mat.

They infused $500,000 into capital improvements for expanded locker rooms and office space, and the Civic Center’s lighting had to be brought up to NBA standards. That price tag didn’t include remaking the floor.

The Charge’s maiden season has worked out well, having clinched a playoff spot in April after a victory on the road at — of all places — Erie.

The team can hardly wait for Year Two. “This is a partnership between the City of Canton and Stark County, the Cavaliers and the Charge,” says Woodruff. “We’re excited about the long-term partnership we have, not just basketball.”

The Canton Charge has sunk a jumper from way downtown that has the city on its feet. Swish!

Canton welcomes a new breed of athlete]

This summer, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will enshrine six more legends of professional football into its exclusive fraternity. But on June 17, thousands of runners will take their place in history too — crossing the finish line of the inaugural Canton Marathon.

Whether they’re doing it to get in shape, stay in shape or cross 26.2 miles off their bucket lists, marathoners will be off and running, and Stark County will welcome the newest in its long line of sporting events.

Making the Case Stephen Mears ran high school cross-country, but never considered himself a “runner” until he registered and paid for his first race: a haIfmarathon in Columbus.

Three years ago, Mears, owner of Canton-based ad agency StrategyONE, and his longtime friend and colleague Julia Dick, owner of PR firm MOLA Productions, began taking stock of some sensational statistics on those of the fleetfooted persuasion.

“We started looking at the national trends. Running as a sport has experienced a 60-percent increase in the past 10 years. When we looked at marathons in various markets, we found that Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Akron and others are selling out every year,” says Mears.

When they combined the success of regional marathons with the national health and fitness trend — along with the growth of running as a sport — it was a winning equation for Canton. The duo announced June 17, 2010 that the inaugural Canton Marathon would hit the streets two years to the day.

With the historic date approaching quickly, Mears and Dick are expecting 6,000 runners. They believe that, with time, the Canton Marathon will grow into an event with an economic impact that rivals the other big sporting events in the area, bringing millions of dollars to the county.

From the start, Mears and Dick sought community-minded people to serve on committees, executing every detail — from the starting line at the Pro Football Hall of Fame to 14

the course’s 39 water stops to the heart-pounding Fawcett Stadium finish line where each runner will be announced to an arena filled with fans.

“Whether you’re participating in one of the events, volunteering, fundraising or simply standing on the street corner cheering on the throngs of runners, this is going to be an incredible weekend for Stark County,” says Dick.

Designing the Course The Canton Marathon includes activities for a variety of runners, beginning on Sat., June 16, with the CSE Federal &UHGLW 8QLRQ .LGV¶ 8OWLPDWH 0DUDWKRQ 'DVK IRU FKLOGUHQ ages 3 to 11. This event features an obstacle course challenge facilitated by YMCA volunteers.

The real action happens on Sunday. The full marathon, along with the five-person full marathon team relay, the 13.1 half-marathon and the 10k race, will run through Canton and Greater Stark County, crossing over I-77 on the Pro Football Hall of Fame Bridge.

The full marathon is a 26.2-mile course certified by the 8QLWHG 6WDWHV 7UDFN DQG )LHOG $VVRFLDWLRQ ZKLFK PHDQV that runners can use official Canton Marathon times to quality for the Boston Marathon. Designed for future growth, the course can potentially accommodate up to 12,000 runners.

The marathon and half-marathon courses were designed by Bob Common, a Canton-native and 16-time marathon runner who just qualified for the 2013 Boston Marathon. This makes the Canton Marathon an experience that is truly designed by runners, for runners.

Following the race, there will be a celebration on the grounds of the Pro Football Hall of Fame featuring music, food, a corporate village for relay teams and a charity village for nonprofits.

Mears says marathon organizers are working to provide plenty of water to ensure runner hydration and create a safe course in terms of traffic control and runner safety.

Running for a Cause While thousands of runners will race for the finish line this year, the real winners will be local charities. The mission of the Canton Marathon is to provide resources to help foster and promote the importance of health and wellness for all citizens in Stark County.

When runners reserve their slot in the marathon, they each have the opportunity to designate a portion of their registration fee to one of 12 official charity partners. Many of these organizations are leveraging this fundraising opportunity by recruiting new runners.

Mears says net proceeds from marathon operations, combined with grants and other donations, will establish a managed fund to disperse grant money in 2013 to organizations that target children’s health, fitness and nutrition issues.

“The Canton Marathon is a unique balance. You have marathons that cater exclusively to the hardcore runner, but we think we know our market,” says Mears. “We quite literally have something for everyone.”

“When I sold the [manufacturing] company and retired in January 2009, I tried the ‘retirement thing’ by going to Florida for the winter. It only lasted 30 days,” he says. “I got bored so I returned to Ohio and began developing the Gervasi Winery and Italian Bistro. In less than one year, we were open for business. Gervasi was started to give me something to do.”

What started as a whim has snowballed into a much-needed $5 million, 55-acre venue in Canton.

“One day during early construction, I was standing in a foot of mud when I was approached by a young woman who wanted to get married in our vineyard. That discussion led to the construction of the 6,000-square-foot outdoor pavilion,” Swaldo says. “As more brides booked their weddings, it became evident that we needed a boutique inn.”

That led to the development of The Villas at Gervasi Vineyard, inspired

by the Swaldo family’s heritage and their love for the Tuscan lifestyle and architecture. Swaldo’s wife, son, daughter and son-in-law work at Gervasi Vineyard, and he says his family members selected every detail of the Gervasi campus.

“Working with my family has been wonderful. Sharing the same interest has brought us closer,” he says. “It does, however, get interesting at the family dinners. My wife finally has to say ‘Enough now. Stop talking about work and eat.’ ” The Gervasi Italian Village includes six villas, each containing four individual rooms connected by a shared Hospitality Room.
