to write after finding myself in a doctor’s office a few weeks back, which allowed me an excellent opportunity to cruise through several editions of akronlife magazine. I found the magazine very well done, from the content to the graphic presentation — it ranks right up there with Cleveland Magazine. Kudos to you and your team.

So Jeff teaches a lecture with 400 students in it, and the day they got a hold of the issue and started passing it around the class, he about died! His phone has been blowing up by his male friends, of course, harassing him!

I got a big kick out of Ben DiCola’s “See Ben Date” series of articles. As a single woman in my mid- to late-40s (I’m taking all kinds of liberties with being 46), I understand and relate to everything Ben wrote about. I’ve also written about my experiences in this crazy “single again” world — from the female perspective, of course. Which is, without question, far more relevant than whatever Ben has experienced. (I’m joking, Ben.) Please tell Ben that it does NOT get any better.

Especially when that teammate looks less like a rival — and more like lunch.

It’s a complex situation, to be sure, and one in which Aeros mascot Orbit the Space Cat recently found himself — when he learned that his new sidekick/partner is a purple polka-dotted pigeon, named Homer.

Yep. The Robin to his Batman is actually related to robins.

It’s enough to cause even the calmest of kitties to choke up a hairball.

But being a professional first, feline second, Orbit has put aside his natural instinct (to eat Homer) to make a go of their new, albeit unusual, partnership.

“Cats and birds are natural enemies, but we’re making it work,” says Orbit, adding that: “I haven’t gone vegan, but I’m definitely off birds. I’ve even stopped eating chicken.”*

Not surprisingly, management at Canal Park confirmed that there’s a zero tolerance policy for eating another mascot and that “Orbit was given ground rules well ahead of time. [Luckily] he and Homer have become fast friends and are doing a great job working together as a team.”

While having Homer at the stadium takes some of the pressure off Orbit (since two mascots can entertain multiple sections of fans at a time), Homer admits that he isn’t much help to the outfielders. “I can’t fly, I’m not quick, and I have feathers so I can’t catch the ball,” he says.

What is up in the air, however, is which of the two will be more popular with the ladies. “We haven’t gone out on the town together much,” says Orbit. “Only time will tell.”

The same could be said about whether this odd couple can make it work long term.

But Homer agrees that, so far, so good, adding that it helps that both he and Orbit have the same goal: to spread the love, put on a good show and entertain the fans. “It’s all about keeping all four of our eyes on the prize.”

*Orbit does still enjoy eating fish and the occasional red meat. When asked who would win if they both started eating a “Nice 2 Meat You” burger at the same time, Orbit responded, “Clearly it’s me. Homer picks at his food like a bird.”

/ Like Hemingway once described, I set off to discover an establishment where I could escape the darkness and enjoy a drink — and the luxury of reflection. / One night, I found myself home, without a date or >> friend. Checking my calendar, it was clear that nothing particular was happening. There was no reason to celebrate, and nothing to complain about, either. There was no reason to stay home, and nothing keeping me from going out. In a casual mood, I knew two important things: I wanted a drink, and I wanted to be served. Furthermore, I wanted a place where I could drink a distinguished beverage, preferably brandy.

The story says no music, but I was willing to tolerate music at a reasonable volume.

Where to go? In all of Akron, where could I find a “clean, well-lighted place?”

I needed a place with a certain amount of quiet. I needed a place where I wouldn’t feel self-conscious scribbling on my tablet.

Grab a booth by the bar or a table in the back for the best light. Typically, it’s quiet enough to think, and plenty of liquors are available.

The one drawback is that the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on the weekend.

Standing out there, looking up at the clouds passing across the moon, I stretched my legs, ran my hand over my mustache and realized I needed a “clean, well-lighted place.”

After all, a “clean, well-lit” place is a sanctuary ...

In Ernest Hemingway’s 1929 short-story, “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place,” a waiter describes a location where a person can go to truly escape the night. The characteristics of such a place are that it is pleasant, run cleanly and has a confirmable amount of june 2011

Thinking back on that night, I remember wandering the four corners of the city, tramping into one place and then the next, testing the air. The quest extended over the next several evenings, resulting in the recommendations above. It’s satisfying to share. After all, a “clean, well-lit” place is a sanctuary — and nothing can describe the sense of relief a person feels upon discovering one. / Charles E. >>Last month, Ben went out with “Theresa,” who flirted with another guy right in front of him and later had a meltdown during a phone conversation — resulting in her hanging up on him and leaving Ben wondering, “What are we, 50 going on 15?” Because the first few dates really should be more fun than this, Ben cut his losses and moved on.

When I started writing this dating saga a few months back, I never thought I’d receive as much positive reaction and interest in my story as I have.

I suppose that’s because most everyone has had similar dating experiences and can relate to what I’ve shared here. (And not everyone has attempted a suicide squeeze with a man on third.) In any case, all’s well that ends well. Here, in my final dating installment (hold your applause, please!) I must say that I’ve learned two things: First, don’t settle.

After age 50, dating, without a doubt, becomes more difficult. In fact, dating itself isn’t good enough. People want quality dates. However, what you quickly akronlife

And you won’t, if you like people. You never know which way the road ahead will bend. Turns out, I knew Gail from a long time ago. When I was a nightclub DJ in the ’70s, she was one of the patrons who came out to dance to “Brickhouse” and “Boogie, Oogie, Oogie.”

The last thing you want to do is say you have a date Saturday night because it’s better than sitting home with a pizza and a beer.

For close to 30 years, I’ve been writing about sports in the Stark County area, where sports are “Top of Mind” awareness, as we often say in the advertising world. But never in all that time writing about power sweeps, half court traps or suicide squeezes did I ever get the reaction from readers, advertising clients and friends that I have from writing about dating … the good, the bad and the ugly!

Gail, actually took the time to write a letter to the editor following my first dating installment back in February. And she and I have been enjoying quality time ever since.

The last thing you want to do is say you have a date Saturday night because it’s better than sitting home with a pizza and a beer. Value your time alone. It’s precious. Don’t settle for a dating partner so you can tell your friends you had a date. It’s you that you have to live with, so make sure you’re happy with your choices.

At long last, I finally did land some quality dating partners. I met one lady through a dating site, and the other lady,

Timing is everything, isn’t it? Back then, Gail wasn’t available, and in later years, I wasn’t available. Now, each of us is — but had I not written about dating in this magazine, I’m quite certain we wouldn’t have become reacquainted. So, don’t give up!

Sure, you’ll likely have to kiss a few frogs (or frogettes) along the way. But you know, the process is still worthwhile ... the good, the bad and the ugly.

Oh, and by the way, Peyton Manning is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Owner and president of Neil Leeson Decor Floral and Be Seated, Leeson was trained in art and sculpture, and began his career in visual merchandising — where he learned to put together “looks” and themed ideas.

People soon began hiring him to decorate their homes for Christmas, and at 27, he quit his job to pursue theme parties full-time. When he started doing weddings and working with fresh flowers in his third year, his business blossomed, so to speak.

Today, Leeson is known for his unforgettable atmospheres and is often hired to work his magic on destination weddings and parties — like when he headed to Puerto Rico to design an event at a 350year-old convent that’s now a boutique hotel. “Our workspace was literally on a balcony that overlooked Luquillo Beach and ocean on one side and the rainforest on the other,” he says, adding that although he kept threatening to stay there, Akron is home.

“I like it here and love that I can keep my life based here but still pursue other ambitions,” says Leeson, who grew up in New York but has lived in Akron for 17 years.

“I really hate winter so being able to do weddings in Florida that time of year is a beautiful thing. I get to have my (wedding) cake and eat it too!”

You’ve incorporated golf balls, artichokes and citrus fruit in your arrangements. What’s been your favorite and why?

NL: My favorite are bloomed purple artichokes. Most people don’t even realize that artichokes bloom, but when they do, they look like giant Muppet flowers on steroids. They’re fantastic!

How would you describe your design style?

NL: It depends upon the client. I ask lots of questions that help me to get into their heads and then start designing from there.

Sometimes it’s super-modern and stylized, sometimes more classic and reserved. I always make sure there are interesting twists or unexpected color combinations. My favorite designs to work on are, of course, anything over-the-top that’s never been seen before.

What’s the most high profile wedding you’ve done?

NL: It was one in Naples, Fla. We were working with a very famous wedding planner, and it was almost covered on the WE Network show “Platinum Weddings,” but the bride and groom decided against publicizing their big day just prior to filming. I was disappointed, of course, but totally understood and respected their decision. We created a crystal canopy for the ceremony, along with swirls of rose petals with Swarovski crystals down the aisle with the Gulf of Mexico in the background. The reception had six different styles of linens, amazing white leather lounge furniture and a cake riser made of over 200 roses mixed with rhinestones.

The most fun?

NL: One of the most fun was here in Akron.

It was an outdoor wedding at the bride’s parents’ home, where we created 5-foot-tall hotpink rose pineapples on top of flower-covered pedestals, lined the garden beds with hundreds of pounds of lemons and oranges and built an Oriental carpet out of fresh flowers.

Everything was oversized and brightly colored in orange, yellow, hot pink and lime, including the 8-foot-tall centerpieces that were these giant towers of flowers with enormous tropical leaves exploding out of the top. It was a great example of an exuberant bride’s personality coming through in a design.

What special event is your dream gig?

NL: The Grammy Awards stage decor or a post-Grammy party. It would be really fun to do something over-the-top and edgy with that group of people. Or a Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show. That would be pretty phenomenal.

If I weren’t a floral designer, I’d be …

NL: a chef. I love to cook for people!

Whose next wedding would you like to do: ___ Larry King ___ J. Lo ___ Billy Bob Thornton XX Other. Who: NL: Madonna, for sure. She has impeccable taste, is fearless, and it would probably be held somewhere amazing, like in Europe. Plus, I’ve been a huge fan of hers forever, and it would be a great excuse to meet her.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve used in an arrangement?

NL: A few years ago, a woman ordered a funeral arrangement for her father, who was an entomologist. She said he had had a great sense of humor, so I suggested we attach realistic crawling bugs all over the arrangement, and she loved the idea, so we did it!

What would surprise people about you?

NL: That as much of an energetic motormouth as I can be, I’m actually pretty quiet and introspective when I’m by myself. And that even though my job is to create lots of intricate designs, I like my personal life best when things are kept simple and calm.

In my spare time …

NL: I love to have dinner parties, hang out by the koi pond with friends, practice yoga and do anything near the water.

When a client goes “Bridezilla,” I: ___ Go to the happy place in my head. ___ Smile, and make a mental note to tack an extra 25% onto her bill. ___ Smack her a few times with a longstemmed rose. ___ Thank goodness I’m not marrying her.

It starts with a First Communion or Easter dress, then there’s the prom dress and eventually for many, the wedding dress. And let’s not forget our first little black dress.

Whether you love dresses or couldn’t wait to wear pants, the fact is, those “special” dresses we’ve worn throughout the years evoke memories (good and bad)!

If you’ve gotten away from wearing dresses, now might be the time to rediscover them — since they’re a huge trend in fashion right now. They’re also a cool, comfortable option for summer.

Below are some dress styles that are trending right now, along with some tips on how to wear them: Sheath Dress: Think Audrey Hepburn or Jackie O. This dress is great for most body types, since it gives you a nice hour-glass shape, hides flaws and shows off great legs.

A sheath dress should skim the body and be sleeveless. Good tailoring is key here.

Dress It Up: Pair it with a structured jacket for work, with some bold accessories and powerful pumps. For a wedding or special event, add some pearls or a pretty pashmina scarf.

Dress It Down: Flat sandals, a large cuff bracelet and a straw handbag will make things easy and relaxed.

Dress It Up: Consider arm-loads of bangle bracelets and a strappy high heel sandal for a summer evening out.

Dress It Down: Leather Flip Flops and a sun hat will take this dress from the beach to poolside!

The Little Black Dress: Definitely iconic, the LBD needs to be in your closet 24/7 and should fit you like a glove. It can be any of the above-mentioned dresses, but remember, the key here is fit! Don’t let this dress be the one that you let fall by the wayside. Keep it in good condition and choose something that’s classic. A season-less style and fabric work best. It will be in your closet for years to come, so it needs to look timeless.

Dress It Up: Pearls, cream-colored shawl and pumps will be pretty for a wedding or date night.

Shirtdress: Think 1950s housewife with an updated silhouette. These dresses aren’t quite as full as your mother’s was, and they lend themselves to any great wardrobe, no matter your style. They can have a straight cut or be fuller on the bottom, with rolled-up sleeves

nly four states have weaker animal-protection laws than Ohio, allowing behavior deemed felonious in other states — such as cockfighting and puppy milling — to flourish here, according to Karen Minton, Ohio representative for the Humane Society of the United States. On a more local level, Summit County has one of the worst compliance rates for dog licensing in Ohio — a fact that deprives animal control services of much-needed money. And, despite some new alternatives, there’s still a dearth of low-cost spaying and neutering options, so when warm weather arrived again this spring, thousands of newborn animals were tossed into dumpsters or left to roam. Making matters worse, the City of Akron now has only two animal wardens instead of four because of budget cuts, so feral cats aren’t usually picked up unless someone complains, according to Akron Deputy Service Director Ron Williamson.

In addition, in early 2011, Missouri — which historically had the nation’s largest concentration of puppy mills — passed a law banning them. Because Ohio has no such ban, there’s concern that Missouri puppy millers will relocate to Ohio en masse. And our proximity to Amish country also makes us a convenient location for the sale of dogs bred and born under inhumane conditions. “Puppy mills are typically filthy, unhealthy kennels where pregnant females give birth over and over again — simply so pups can be sold for profit to unsuspecting owners,” says Stephanie Moore, head of the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“If you want to describe where we were a few years ago and where we are now, light years ahead would be a good way to put it.”

But thanks to efforts at all levels of the public and private sectors, area animal experts — including Moore — agree that the outlook for animal welfare in the Akron area and Ohio overall is finally improving: • Both the County of Summit’s Division of Animal Control and the Humane Society of Greater Akron opened new, spacious facilities this year.

• A coalition of area animal welfare groups, both public and private, was formed a little more than a year ago with the mission to work together better.

• One of a Kind Pets, a private, non-profit rescue group and clinic, has begun offering low- and no-cost spaying and neutering services.

• In 2010, Summit County animal control adopted out nearly 2,000 animals, compared to 305 in 2003. All of the animals adopted were spayed and neutered before leaving the facility, in stark contrast to former practices. And in February, the county tripled the amount of time a veterinarian works at its new facility.

• A new awareness of animal welfare issues seems to be growing among the general public, making pet adoption — as well as spaying and neutering — causes with a cool factor.

ust more than seven years ago, the situation for homeless and lost animals in the Summit County area was dismal. In early 2004, a study team from the National Animal Control Association (NACA) of Olate, Kansas, visited Akron to assess the Summit County Animal Control Facility — which, at the time, was housed in a decades-old, 9,000-square-foot building on North Street in the shadow of the Y-Bridge.

Even the most heinous animal cruelty — including dog fighting — is a misdemeanor on a first offense in Ohio.

The NACA team was invited by then-Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy soon after he’d fired the facility’s chief warden, who faced numerous felony charges involving the theft of shelter drugs, among other crimes. The warden eventually pleaded guilty to a single felony charge of illegally processing drug documents.

Around that same time, McCarthy hired Craig Stanley as deputy director of administrative services to help get things under control.

Stanley brought with him a stellar record as an investigator with Ohio’s Department of Commerce.

During its March 2004 visit to Akron, NACA found a somewhat milder version of the nightmarish scene that had been described for years by outspoken animal rights groups. The tone of the report was firm but cordial. (After all, NACA is a trade group trying to help one of its own.)

NACA found 132 problems in all, ranging from reliance on 20-yearold computer software to the euthanasia of animals on a concrete floor to cats being euthanized in cages they shared with living cats.

When asked, the center told NACA it contracted with a veterinarian for services on occasion — but was unable to provide a copy of the agreement. This led to NACA concluding that pound keepers, with a mere 16 hours of euthanasia training, typically decided which animals lived and died — and did the killing. The county later reported that, in reality, a veterinarian visited the facility only a few times a year.

Some other problems on NACA’s list: • Dogs were housed in double rows of cages that were too small.

When the top rows of kennels were cleaned, the urine, dirt and feces flowed to the cages below, which had no gutter systems.

• Dogs had “exercise” time in a tiled pen, where unaltered animals were allowed to fight, share diseases and copulate under the noses of those charged with keeping the pet population under control.

• There was no isolation space for sick cats, which led to the spread of serious diseases.

By the time NACA returned for a follow-up in 2006, the majority of the problems that could be solved had been. But it took more than six years for the team’s most urgent suggestion — a new facility — to become a reality.

hy did it take so long? Infighting.

Johnnie Mays, president of NACA’s assessment team, said he “was deeply disturbed by the level of conflict” and bickering in the community, especially between McCarthy’s office and County Council.

The toxic, troublesome situation was so well known that when the center searched for a contract veterinarian in late 2006, only Wadsworth’s Dr. Cynthia Arends applied. “Nobody wanted to be in the middle of all the controversy,” says Stanley. “Our reputation was that we were too hot to deal with.”

The tension between County Council and the executive’s office finally eased in 2007, when Russ Pry took over as county executive, after McCarthy retired. The plan for the new shelter then began moving along without old grudges standing in its way. Finally, in August 2010, the County of Summit Animal Control opened its $2.62 million, LEED-certified center on Opportunity Parkway.

Meanwhile, the Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA) was having its own problems. In 2004, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which owns the land in Boston Township on which the society’s shelter sat, said it wanted the property back. The ramshackle shelter was woefully inadequate anyway; it was meant to hold 125 animals, but at times housed more than 400, according to Karen Hackenberry, HSGA director since July 2010.

By 2007, well before Hackenberry arrived, the shelter’s overcrowding, as well as increasing pressure from the park, exacerbated friction among its board of directors — some of whom believed the society needed to modify its traditional no-kill policy to include exceptions for space reasons as well as incurable suffering. Some board members resigned amid the upheaval.

By 2008, the shelter had a lead gift of $1 million out of the $5 million it needed to pay off a new shelter and the cost of the move. In the fall of 2009, the society purchased a 68,000-square-foot office and warehouse building at 7996 Darrow Road in Twinsburg from the Summit County Port Authority for $3.4 million. warehouse and moved in March 2010. The society clearly operates under its traditional no-kill policy unless an animal is suffering and beyond hope, says Hackenberry. It’s also one of the only shelters in the state to accept pit bulls, one of only two dog breeds Akron regulates specifically (Presa Canarias is the other). The new facility can house hundreds more animals comfortably and has been designed to be more conducive to interaction between pets and potential owners. And HSGA will break ground soon for a new medical surgical suite in the shelter, eliminating the need to transport animals to vet offices.

W

hat Hackenberry is most excited about, however, is the new sense of cooperation among area animal welfare groups. “We’re putting differences aside and putting the animals first,” says Hackenberry, part of the newly formed Summit County Animal Coalition, which holds adoption events and promotes pet adoption through Internet sites, broadcast and print media, events and Petsmart Charities. (Hackenberry says that when the Greater Akron Humane Society created a Facebook site, adoptions increased 10 percent.)

Karen Conklin, Hackenberry’s predecessor who now works for the Red Cross in Trumbull County, began the Animal Coalition, which includes representatives from Summit County animal control and the City of Akron, as well as several well-respected rescue groups such as One of a Kind Pets in West Akron — a non-profit that adopts out animals and runs a retail store and a low-cost/no-cost clinic (research shows that communities offering low-cost spaying, neutering and vaccinations reduce the number of euthanized animals by 76 percent within two years).

Minton of the Humane Society says such cooperation among regional groups is heartening, but state laws need to be strengthened to effect real change. And while the USDA and the Department of Agriculture oversee kennels, Ohio has only a handful of inspectors — and most kennels are unlicensed anyway. According to Minton, Ohio law basically gives an animal three things: shelter, food and water. And the shelter can be something as simple as a cardboard box with a plywood top.

Ohio laws are so unclear that Greater Akron Humane Society Humane Officer Tim Harland often has a tough time doing his job. He says he’s resigned himself to the fact that his main job is to educate bad pet owners, not punish them. And he isn’t nearly as confident as Minton when it comes to the prospective effects of stronger state laws. Even if the laws were tougher, he says, there’s little hope animal abusers will get what they deserve: big fines and jail time.

“We have too many people in our jails and prisons right now,” he says. “The government is looking for ways to ease the crowding, not increase it.”

Still, Harland goes out on call after call, every day, keeping his focus on rescuing injured and sick animals and educating owners.

During a late February snowstorm, Harland received a call from an East Akron resident. She told Harland someone dumped an injured

dog in the street by her house and that, in fact, a lot of people dump unwanted pets there because the area is isolated. Since the temperature was 20 degrees with near-blizzard conditions, she brought the dog into her home.

When Harland and I knocked on the caller’s door, the Rottweiler greeted us by sniffing our hands and wagging his tail slowly. He had no collar or tags, so Harland and I called him “Big Boy.” The dog’s hind end was tucked low as he limped. He had green pus oozing from his eyes. The only time the dog snapped is when Harland attempted to get him into the rescue truck. With the help of the caller’s son, Harland lifted the Rottweiler safely into a crate. He planned to take Big Boy back to the Twinsburg shelter, where he’d be assessed by a veterinarian.

Harland sighed as he shut the truck door.

“Tomorrow, there will be more like Big Boy, and more the day after that,” he says. “But at least this guy has some hope now.”

If you have anywhere from a few hours to >> a few days, you can take a step back in time this summer to explore one (or a few) of Ohio’s many historic villages — some of which are only open this time of year.

Closest to home is Hale Farm and Village in Bath — an outdoor living history museum giving visitors a taste of what life was like on the Western Reserve during the 19th century. Enjoy farm animals, pastures and historic houses with historical interpreters dressed in period costume, along with all sorts of special programs like Dinner with Abraham Lincoln; the Civil War Reenactment Ball; the Civil War Encampment & Reenactment — when thousands flock to Hale Farm & Village to hear the sounds of battle, smell the gunpowder and shake hands with President Lincoln (and even shop for a hoopskirt); and Pioneer Festival Weekend, when visitors “rough it” as they experience historic civilian pioneer life, meet War of 1812 soldiers, and learn about pioneers and Native Americans coexisting during this period of time.

The history of Hale Farm and Village goes back to 1810, when Connecticut farmer Jonathan Hale arrived in the Western Reserve. Hale had $1,250 of assets remaining after a friend was unable to pay debts that Hale had guaranteed. With that money, he bought 500 acres of land. Upon his arrival, he found a squatter on his land. But since he respected the work the man had done on the property, rather than ousting him, Hale gave him a horse and wagon in exchange for his work — hence, began Hale Homestead.

In 1825, Hale began construction on a large, red brick house using materials from his property. When completed, it was one of only two brick homes in the Cuyahoga Valley.

Three generations of the family have lived in this house and farmed the property. Today, Hale Homestead is a working farm with 32 buildings, including the new Gatehouse Café and a Museum Store, offering unique souvenirs and gifts from baskets and brooms to bayberry candles and blacksmith wares that are locally made right at Hale Farm.

From June through August, Hale Farm and Village is open Wednesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. General admission is $10 for adults and seniors; $5 for children age 3-12; and free for children 2 and under.

Hale Farm and Village

If you’d like to venture a little further from home, head to Schoenbrunn Village in New Philadelphia. The Moravian church founded Schoenbrunn (which means “beautiful spring”) in 1772 as a mission to the Delaware Indians. The settlement grew to include 60 dwellings and more than 300 inhabitants who drew up Ohio’s first civil code and built its first Christian church and schoolhouse.

Though problems associated with the American Revolution prompted Schoenbrunn’s closing in 1777, Schoenbrunn’s story features a rare meeting of Indian and European cultures and a fascinating perspective on the American Revolution.

The reconstructed Village includes 17 buildings, gardens and the original mission cemetery, along with a museum, visitor center and picnic area.

Schoenbrunn Village

Schoenbrunn Village is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 12-5 p.m.

Yet another part of the original Connecticut Western Reserve, Burton is home to the Century Village Museum — Geauga County Historical Society’s showpiece living history site. Here you can walk through 100 years of Geauga County history, beginning with the 1798 Umberfield Cabin and ending with the 1872 schoolhouse. In between, you’ll see vintage barns, a blacksmith shop, an 1846 church, the Crossroads store, an 1878 train station, the Marshall’s office and five furnished historical homes. Seventeen historically significant structures have been moved to or reconstructed on this site, joining six others that were originally located here. The buildings house more 20,000 artifacts. Expansion of the site seems likely since another 60 acres of land has been acquired and 10 additional buildings designed and built to support the Society’s activities.

A stroll through the Century Village is a great way to spend a summer afternoon, and in the fall, check out the 63rd Annual Apple Butter Festival held on Oct. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Century Village is at the intersection of routes 87 and 168 and is open March through November. In the southern part of our state, culture comes to life at Sunwatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park in Dayton. The Park is a partially reconstructed Fort Ancient period American Indian village along the Great Miami River. Excavations at this 13th century (yes, before Columbus had even discovered America!) village exposed a planned, stockaded Fort Ancient period settlement with astronomical alignments that was likely occupied for about 20 years. Due to its significance, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1990.

Heading west to Bellevue, you’ll find the Historic Lyme Village, which depicts life in the Firelands from the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800s through the early 1900s. The Village got its start in 1972, when the Historic Lyme Church Association (now the Historic Lyme Village Association) was founded to preserve the history of Lyme Township and the surrounding area. The association expanded and started the Historic Village when the Seymour House was going to be destroyed unless it was moved.

Among the buildings in the Village are three log houses, the John Wright Mansion and Carriage House (a Second Empire Victorian on its original location, listed on the National Register of Historic Places), two barns, a woodworkers’ shop, a general store, Schug Hardware, Groton Town hall, a shoe shop, 46

In 1988, after 17 years of excavation and research by the Dayton Society of Natural History, Sunwatch opened to the public.

The years of excavation at the site, combined with additional analysis and research, have resulted in a remarkable understanding of the site’s original inhabitants. Sunwatch currently combines experimental archaeological research, including the reconstruction of the Fort Ancient structures in their original 13th century locations, with an interpretive center that exhibits many of the artifacts that have been recovered from the site. Layer Cake Wines Have Your Cake and Drink It, Too

>> Jayson Woodbridge was inspired by his grandfather and grandmother who

made (and enjoyed!) wine for 80 years. Every Sunday, his grandmother would bake a layer cake for dessert, and his grandfather would explain that the soils in which the vines lived were similar to a layer cake — and that if wine is made properly from these vines, the wine itself would be like a layer cake rich with fruit, mocha, chocolate and hints of spice.

“Never pass up a good layer cake,” his grandfather would say.

Woodbridge conceived Layer Cake Wines as a homage to his grandfather, with the goal of crafting wines that are stunningly good, yet affordable enough to be enjoyed every day. His first step toward this goal was to taste a couple hundred California wines priced between $10 and $30; he was appalled by what he found — and came away inspired all the more “to blow people away with a $15 wine that tastes like a $50 wine.”

He succeeded. Called “the ultimate in affordable luxury” by Food and Wine Magazine, Layer Cake Wines are handmade in some of Woodbridge’s favorite wine regions around the world. Woodbridge and his winemaking team work with small family growers, rigorously selecting only the very best fruit to produce a Shiraz from Australia’s Barossa Valley; a Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina; an old vine Primitivo (a.k.a. Zinfandel) from Puglia, Italy; a Virgin Chardonnay from the Central Coast of California; and a Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

Let’s take a closer look at two of them.

The Layer Cake Shiraz, South Australia 100% Pure Shiraz 2009 This estate-grown Australia Shiraz is handcrafted with rich mocha aromas that lead to an explosion on the palate with rich raspberry, black cherry and chocolate flavors. You can serve this wine with grilled steaks and lamb chops. It also pairs well with mild cheeses and spicier pizzas or a seafood dish like grilled salmon.

The Layer Cake Malbec, Mendoza Argentina 100% Alluvial Grown Malbec 2009 This Malbec is a powerhouse of lush black fruit that leads to a rich creamy texture of jam on the palate. It will stand and perform any time you think of a Cabernet and want something a little more exotic. It pairs well with grilled steaks and chops.

What spinal conditions do you treat?

We treat the full spectrum of spinal conditions, including spinal tumors, trauma infections and degenerative conditions. In addition to complex reconstructions and revision spinal surgeries for many spinal disorders, we also routinely perform microscopic procedures — and less invasive surgeries — which may lead to a more rapid recovery and less pain for the patient.

What are patients looking for when they come to see you?

Spinal problems are painful. The spine is central to our being. You cannot move your arms or legs if you have a painful spine. People want to be less uncomfortable when they’re doing any type of activity — whether it’s hiking in the mountains or simply driving a car. They want to resume a normal lifestyle. We try to prevent the condition from becoming worse, or reverse and stabilize what’s going on.

When should patients see a specialist if they suspect they have a spine condition?

People shouldn’t wait, though that’s what they tend to do. Often, a patient has lived with the disorder for decades. They have a high pain tolerance.

But their outcome could have been better if they didn’t wait so long to have a procedure.

How can patients determine whether they have significant enough back pain to see a specialist?

The answer to this question is easy: The patient decides. The patient determines how severe the back pain is, and how it’s affecting his or her lifestyle. If your back only hurts when you shovel, for example, the solution is simple: Turn that chore over to someone else. But if your back hurts when you get up in the morning, when you bend over the sink when brushing your teeth, when you sit at work, and forces you to lie on the floor for relief — that’s significant back pain.

What is a fusion?

A fusion welds (fuses) two or more vertebrae together using bone graft. It keeps the vertebrae in place and takes away the pain. Sometimes, metal rods and screws are used in addition to the bone. The hardware helps to stabilize the area where the fusion is to form. Hardware may also be used to correct deformity resulting from a fracture, tumor or scoliosis.

Will a patient lose the ability to bend over as a result of a fusion?

A fusion rarely results in lost movement in the back for a number of reasons. Not all of the vertebrae will be fused together, and movement will still occur at the other non-fused levels. Most of the ability to bend at the waist actually occurs at the hip joint.

Should a patient have surgery?

Patients have to make that decision with their surgeon. You won’t become a wheelchair-bound individual because of a degenerative change in your spine. But your back will hurt. If you feel that your back pain is altering your lifestyle too much and you’ve tried numerous treatments without any change, you may elect to have surgery. If you have a fracture or instability of the spine, we may strongly recommend surgery. However, it’s always the patient’s choice.

Canton:

A Rust-Belt City Reborn I live in Canton. When people ask me why, the easy answer would be to say, “Well, because my family lives there.”

But the fact is, I like Canton — so if my family moved away tomorrow, I’d miss them.

I’ve said before that living in Canton is living in a little big city. OK, a little medium city. (That’s probably why it was once known as Little Chicago.) Canton has everything I need and most of what I want.

Judi Christy from ArtsinStark describes Canton as “blue-collar tenacity all grown up, thriving with a downtown arts and historic district, a 330,000-square-foot cultural center, a top-shelf winery, and a whole lot of excitement about a little leather ball. It’s a place where you can enjoy a bitner, a coney dog and a really great martini; a place where you can visit a planetarium, ride the rails, and walk the streets, waving to your neighbors.”

In a lot of ways, Canton really is a renaissance city. “It has the best of everything,” says Jess Bennett from the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, “a strong backbone in manufacturing, but a wonderful surge in new technology; an eclectic and growing arts and cultural scene; a host of community events and endeavors that showcase the best of what the Midwest has to offer; and we’re ripe with both history and heroes — and not just in the sense of being the Hall of Fame City.”

An urban laboratory of sorts, Canton is a rustbelt city under reinvention. “We’ve long been known as a bellwether region in national elections,” says Bennett. “But I believe that we’re a bellwether region when it comes to seeing how an American community can adapt and evolve over time.”

Dan the Man

How many kids grow up in a city that houses a professional Hall of Fame — and then end up being in it one day?

Dan Dierdorf is one of ’em.

Everything about Dan Dierdorf was big, except his dreams.

The Canton born, 1967 Glenwood High School graduate never envisioned himself playing one day in the National Football League. That’s not how kids thought in the ’60s. In fact, it wasn’t until his junior year at Michigan that Dierdorf — today a CBS football analyst and a 1996 Hall of Fame enshrinee — could see himself suiting up to block the rush of oncoming defensive lineman with missing teeth and nasty attitudes.

Turns out, Dierdorf did just that for 13 seasons at right tackle with the former St. Louis Cardinals from 1971-1983. But unlike many of today’s star athletes who plan early for entry into the professional ranks, Dierdorf had no such designs on playing professionally, let alone induction into the Hall of Fame.

“I never thought of it actually,” he says. “Some dreams were just too big. To be honest, I was worried about making my high school team.”

That same kid would go on to become a two-time All-Big Ten tackle at the University of Michigan and a consensus All-American as a senior in 1971.

You can count on one hand, though, how many kids grow up in a city that houses a professional Hall of Fame — and then end up being in it one day. And he was there at the very beginning.

“I grew up a mile away from the Hall of Fame,” says Dierdorf. “I was at the groundbreaking in September 1962 with my father, and I remember Pete Rozelle [late NFL commissioner] was there. I didn’t even know who he was, but I knew this was a big deal for Canton.” Dierdorf was 13.

A few decades later, in 2008, Dierdorf was that year’s recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television award. In accepting the honor, Dierdorf said, “I’m obviously extremely flattered on many levels. First of all, because of my

Every city could do it.

The calendar is the same.

Once a month, there’s a TGIF that falls, if not races, to be the first. And in cities like Phoenix, Minneapolis, Denver and Charlotte, they pull out the stops — well … at least six times a year. But in Canton, Ohio, the first Friday of every month — come rain, shine, ice storm or flash flood — the stage is set for celebration.

July 1, 2011 marks the 48th consecutive First Friday in the downtown Canton Arts District (an area that’s roughly mapped between Cleveland and Market avenues, and between Sixth Street NE and Tuscarawas Street). This means four straight years of live music, gallery hops, street strolling and themed activities in a six-block area that, not so long ago, was both boarded up and boring.

Like many downtowns, Canton retail had relocated to the malls, Mom-and-Pop 1

restaurants had been forced into early retirement and pay-to-park restrictions left vacancies at the meters and on the streets. People who worked downtown left downtown at 5 p.m. sharp!

And those who had all the conveniences of Starbucks and The Strip would narrowly venture into downtown after dark. (And people from Akron? Forget about it. They had Canal Park and Crave to keep them content.)

What was it going to take to bring people back? To keep doors open? To keep revenues flowing? And to really put some meat on the new city slogan, “It’s different downtown”?

True, the Canton Development Partnership had a challenge. But they also had an ally. ArtsinStark, a nonprofit organization that was most closely associated with the Cultural Center for the Arts, was armed with a new mission and a new CEO, Robb Hankins.

ball than art — but hey, they came and bumped attendance to 500. And when they left, September grew a little more.

And so it has continued.

Having worked in cities where the story had been the same, Hankins suggested that improvements could be made by adding public art, galleries and live music to the lacking landscape. But could it really be that simple?

Of course not! Nothing is. But it was a start.

Commissions for over-sized critters made from recycled steel, an opportunity for lowrent housing and workspace for artists, and the idea of a free once-a-month street-arts party (borrowed from largecity success) came together.

And stayed.

The first First Friday (July 6, 2007) resulted in less than 100 people milling down Sixth Street, popping into 2nd April Galerie, stopping to get their kids’ faces painted and being entertained by random acts of improv like a street juggler and a (self-proclaimed) mad violinist.

Adjustments were made, marketing was revved and a couple more downtown businesses got on board. August drew a larger crowd, some of whom with out-of-state plates and interests more in foot-

Professional and amateur artists will hit the streets with their original designs to create a temporary gallery guaranteed to stop traffic. In addition, Fourth Street will stage area bands all evening, and all galleries including Anderson Creative, 2nd April Galerie, The Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography and ACME Artists will launch new exhibits. Court Avenue will be lined with street vendors selling everything (artsy!) from handmade jewelry to painting, knitware to handmade books.

will be open, allowing folks to rub elbows with the artists themselves and hopefully be inspired to take home a few of their treasures.

As with July 1, all First Fridays are themed, ranging from Dancing in the Dark, Chocolate Dreams, A Blast from the Past, Snow Much to Do Downtown, Blues on the Beach and Hound Dog Days of Summer. The planners of First Friday (today, only one key coordinator, a part-time staffer and a handful of volunteers, including spouses, significant others and really good friends) begin months in advance to assure that sound checks, street permits, noise ordinances, temporary stage lighting and a full range of activities are on the schedule. Oh, and they also have to worry about over-flowing trash cans, port-o-pots and a ban on open containers.

Sarah Shumaker, who coordinated First Friday from 2008-2010, along with Kelly Blandford-Bah, kept a whimsical list of oddball things that crossed her desk. Titling her collection in comedian Jeff Foxworthy style, “You may be a First Friday event planner if …,” Shumaker sites her favorites: • There’s one night per month when you’re directly responsible for the weather.

• You know where to find every outdoor electrical outlet in downtown Canton between 6th Street N. and Tuscarawas Avenue.

• You’ve had to secure "bouncers" for giant, famous horses.

• You’ve had to secure "bouncers" for a poetry reading.

• You’ve purposely walked around downtown Canton in an Elvis costume.

• You’ve ever had to utter the phrase, "Under no circumstances will I clean up giraffe poop."

Past First Fridays have involved flash mobs, Budweiser Clydesdales, a concert on the roof of Primo’s Restaurant, belly dancing, ballroom dancing, Irish dancing, Russian dancing, salsa dancing, ballet dancing, hip-hop dancing and an African drum circle. Bands like the Most Beautiful Losers, Scott Paris and Ryan Humbert have shut down the streets, along with a stilt-walker dressed like a black widow spider, world-famous ice sculptor Aaron Costic and his two-story fire and ice sculpture, and a full-dress performance of Shakespeare.

But it’s not only arts folks involved in the First Friday frenzy.

Each offers their store walls as temporary gallery space to a local artist. Motter and Meadows Architects allows their parking lot to be use used for highschool rock-offs; the American Red Cross does a children’s art activity, and weather appropriate, gives out free hot chocolate; Aultman’s Wellness on Wheels is a regular with nurses teaching themed arts activities with a healthy flair; and CSE Credit Union has brought in a balloon bender and a magician.

Downtown restaurants are packed on First Fridays, offering everything from arcade coneys to crab cakes — taking their meals on wheels in the warm months to vend outdoors on the streetcarnivaled Court Avenue; you’ll find picnic tables nearby, on the Kresge Green Space — a First Friday canvas for holiday light shows, the waterless aquarium and a pick-up game of football.

Not “technically” in the arts district, but close enough, the Canton Museum of Art, located in the 3,000-square-foot Cultural Center for the Arts (1001 Market Ave. N.) began First Stop First Friday about two years ago.

Partnering with The Repository, First Stop begins at 5:30 p.m., before the official start of the evening, with — among other things — free admission to the current gallery exhibit and a complimentary glass of wine (for the 21-over crowd).

The Canton Woman’s Club, also on Market Avenue N., opens its historic doors to a special sitdown meal during First Friday festivities, and has been privy to Elvis-sightings, parking lot dance-offs and Dick’s Coney Sauce in the warmer months.

Summer months truly get back in step with the Arts Street Parade, led in enthusiastic style by ArtsinStark CEO Robb Hankins, who weaves a group of kids, teens, parents and make-shift marchers on a parade that points 18

Stark ARThology

The first art anthology book dedicated to the eclectic artists of Stark County.

Sixty-nine of Northeast Ohio’s most talented, eclectic and diverse artists are showcased in the book Stark ARThology (Indigo Ink Press 2010) through their work, words and provocatively austere portraiture. The collection features artists working in almost every genre of visual art, including painting, photography, mixed media, fiber arts, ceramic art, sculpture, glass, jewelry and digital design.

“Promoting the accomplished artists of our community has been the goal of Stark ARThology from day one,” says Jessica Bennett, executive director of Indigo Ink Press.

Stark County is the place to be for young people — to live, work and play. And ystark! (a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce) is focused on making sure young people know it. ystark! works to attract and retain talented young professionals (YPs) to Stark County — with a focus on improving their quality of life in order to keep the community attractive to this vital segment of the workforce.

To help accomplish this, ystark! has developed a variety of successful events, programs and opportunities for members to get involved in, showcase their talents and impact the community. One such program — Twenty under 40! — recognizes 20 outstanding individuals under 40 who exemplify leadership, community trusteeship and volunteerism.

You work in Akron, but choose to live in Canton. Why? I love both cities. I chose to live in Canton to stay close to family. I grew up in Canton, and it feels like home.

Why did you become involved in ystark!?

After my husband and I moved back to Canton four years ago, I was looking for a way to get involved in the community, and ystark! was one of the groups recommended to me — so I signed up and attended a few events to find out more. I heard that they had an Education Outreach Committee, which was my area of interest. I got involved right away and have enjoyed every event since.

What’s your dream job?

I honestly have to say that I have my dream job. I have the opportunity to help others learn and appreciate a subject that I love. I also have the flexibility in my schedule to contribute to the growth of the university and to stay involved with community service.

What advice would you give to other YPs? Always push yourself beyond your comfort zone. A little anxiety about trying something new or getting involved is good and can really help you realize your true potential. I’m always a little nervous when I take on a new project or leadership role, but it always turns out to be a great experience and leads me to other opportunities.

Where are your favorite places to hang out?

In Akron, I love to grab dinner at Luigi’s and Aladdin’s and go hiking in the Metro Parks. In Canton, my favorite place to hang out is Muggswigz and Monument Park.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love to be outside so it has to be sitting out on the deck in my back yard with a good book or going hiking with my best friend. I can’t wait for summer!

Why did you become involved in ystark!?

I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Professional Development Committee (which gets members up NY around 1998. That’s close and personal with successful local business leaders who are when I realized how great it also active in the community). was for Canton to have the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and I began to volunteer for their annual festival. ystark! formed a couple of years later, and it just made sense to get involved. They’re a great group of peers to be around.

It’s not about becoming an allstar volunteer; it’s just about stepping out of your day-today routine and doing something different.

Why do you work and live in Canton?

My family, along with my wife’s family, are here — so it’s truly home for us. And, this area has a small-town feel with big city amenities. Industry leading companies, emerging medical organizations, a great airport, solid infrastructure and what’s slowly and quietly becoming a great parks system with Stark Parks.

What’s your favorite local hangout?

Hands down, Sylvester’s. Great atmosphere, great bar area and great food.

What’s the best thing about ystark!

First and foremost, the leadership and staff at the Chamber are great and extremely knowledgeable about the jobs they hold. They don’t drive their volunteers to burn out, which allows the right people to take roles. It’s a culture that allows genuine creativity. The second thing has to do with learning about companies and organizations within this com-

munity that some folks have never heard of or had exposure to. Ever driven down the street and asked yourself, ‘I wonder what they do?’ ystark! provides their members the opportunity to find out.

What advice do you have for other YPs? Read the book ‘Play To Win’

by Larry Wilson and Hersch Wilson. It’s about how daunting and full of uncertainty life seems at times, but if you just challenge yourself and change your view just a bit, you’ll see things in a totally different light.

My favorite guilty pleasure is … burgers on my charcoal grill and a couple of summer ales on the back patio.

What do you tell your children about Stark County?

My parents live in southern Stark County, so when we go down there from North Canton, I like to take a different way every time and tell my kids about the stores, companies, churches and railroads of Stark County. Lately I’ve been learning a lot about area manufacturing during the late 1800s and early 1900s. I’m not sure they’ll care, but one day I’d like to tell them all about that as well.

What’s your dream job?

I think Steve Perry* at the Pro Football Hall of Fame has my dream job. I’m sure it’s a lot more difficult than he lets on, but combining my love for the NFL and matching it up with my love for this community — that would be a great job. CL *Perry is the HOF’s president/ executive director.

What’s in a Name?

Just what is an “auricle” you ask? The auricle (or pinna as it’s also known) is the outer, visible part of your ear — the parts that collects sound and funnels it inside. The auricle filters and amplifies sound on its way to the auditory canal. And it makes for an aptly named new music venue!

continued from page 13 have traveled the country on tour in bands — so they know what artists are looking for (and what they’re dreading) when it comes to touring venues of all sizes. Brewer says that he believes this know-how will go a long way in attracting bands, and hopes that in the next few years, they’ll get to the point where acts will come calling based on The Auricle’s reputation as a crowd and band-pleaser.

Artist amenities at The Auricle include a swanky lounge with private shower facilities, big screen televisions and gaming galore. And while everyone on staff wears a variety of hats, Curtis Miller and Luke Gaul will focus almost entirely on band satisfaction, from booking to stellar event-night hospitality.

And the venue itself? If you show up expecting a sticky-floored dive, you’ll be more than a little disappointed. Brewer and com-

pany have done a wonderful job of improving on the ambiance of the space. Gone are the space-consuming tables and chairs — opening the place up to accommodate big gatherings. The Auricle also will provide some cold sandwiches and sides, and Brewer hopes to provide a full-service bar (license pending) later this summer.

“We’re a music venue first, a comfortable place to experience live music,” says Brewer. “More than anything, we want people to come down and hang out, to connect with us. This will be a community destination.”

The ultimate goal, says Brewer, is for The Auricle to be a hot spot every night of the week, with four or five concerts on tap.

But don’t misunderstand. A teeny bopper club this is not. While The Auricle will cater to a younger crowd with all-ages events, the establishment on the whole is distinctly adult.

Today, Dierdorf and his wife, Debbie, and four children reside in St. Louis. They’re very active in their community, serving on boards for Children’s Hospital in St. Louis and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, St. Louis chapter. Dierdorf also is a member of the State of Missouri and the State of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2006, was inducted into the Arizona Cardinals Ring of Honor, in recognition of his playing days when the team performed in St. Louis.

When asked about the Hall of Fame’s announcement of a major expansion and renovation project (the largest in the museum’s history), carrying a $23.6 million price tag, Dierdorf says: “It’s incredible how far the Hall of Fame has evolved as a museum and national tourist attraction since its opening” — adding that he finds that most NFL players he speaks with today do still have an appreciation for the men who played the game before them.

“Pro football as we know it today was built on the shoulders of many of the players from the 1950s and 1960s,” Dierdorf says. “I could still tell you every starting player on the Cleveland Browns from the mid-1960s. When I watched Jim Brown and Frank Ryan walk off the field, it was like Mt. Olympus. They were larger than life.”
