I enjoyed your recent article in Akron Life & Leisure regarding the Internet, texting, Facebook, etc.

(Publisher’s Page, April 2010).

Although I occasionally text or look at Facebook and rely (heavily) on email correspondence, I cannot send messages using cryptic Internet jargon.

I think the jargon, among other things in this world, is “dumbing down” our society. We’re promoting a culture that would be unable to think and communicate if they lost their computer, cell phone or other electronic gadgets.

Don’t get me wrong, I love electronic gadgets, but I don’t play computer games. I like the convenience of being able to send a message whenever I feel like it as well as the

convenience of reading my correspondence, researching a topic or ordering a shirt at any time of the day. I also have a Bluetooth headset, a couple of GPS units and an iPhone loaded with Apps and I use all of them. But I also try to maintain the skills I learned in the good old days when they taught you grammar, spelling and English composition.

Our current generation has trouble figuring change for a dollar, percentages for a tip or the current time if they’re not looking at digital clock.

Keep up the good work with your magazine. I always look forward to receiving it.

Decade to Dance 1

roundWorks Dance Theater hosted its annual benefit, Decade 2 Dance, on March 13 at Windows on the River in Cleveland. The evening followed a “Dancing with the Stars” format, with six local celebrities paired with GroundWorks dancers. Among this year’s celebrities was Akron’s own Tony Troppe. This year’s event attracted 150 guests and raised $31,000 in support of GroundWorks’ education and outreach programs.

T

he Empty Bowl Project was held Sunday, March 21 at the Akron Art Museum.

Guests were served signature soups from local restaurants in handmade ceramic bowls in exchange for a cash donation to fight hunger. Zeber-Martell Studio individually made 250 bowls for the event, which raised $5,000 for the Good Samaritan Hunger Center in Akron.

Guests were allowed to keep the bowls as a reminder of the meal’s purpose.

Bob Dobson Stow Firefighter and Paramedic

F

or Bob Dobson, being a firefighter/ paramedic is “the most rewarding career possible.” After growing up in Akron, he was inspired to become a fire fighter by his brother, who also went into the field, and because of his desire to help people. He went to EMT school and started his career at a young age. He worked with Coventry’s fire department for his first 11 years and has been with Stow ever since.

Bob says he’s had many memorable experiences in his 20 years in the field, but his most “life-altering” one was going to Nicaragua to donate a fire engine in 2007.

“It was an unbelievable gift to them,” he says. But Bob and his coworkers offered more than just a truck. They helped teach local firefighters modern techniques that will help keep them safe while they’re saving others. “I know they were the ones that got the fire engine, but we were the ones that really profited,” he says. “We learned how lucky we are to be in the U.S.” Difficulties of the job: “The public is always

watching so there’s always pressure there,” he says. He also has to wear a lot of hats between saving people’s belongings, handling sick children and performing various tasks for people whose thinking is, “If you can’t fix it, call the fire department.”

Another memorable experience: Going to New York City for the Firefighters’ March after Sept. 11. “It was very gratifying,” he recalls. “I felt like the whole city respected us.”

have a lot of down time between calls, but when we do we play basketball or cook dinner together.”

An Old Border Revisited

A

phrase from a radio show I enjoyed in my youth seems like an appropriate way to begin: “Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear...” The show was “The Lone Ranger,” and I’ll leave it to the reader to decide whether artist Chuck Ayers and I might resemble the masked defender of justice and Tonto, his faithful Indian companion.

Suffice it to say we traveled by car and on foot to trace sections of the old border between Medina and Portage counties.

That was before the Ohio Legislature created Summit County in March 1840.

Summit’s 170th anniversary gave us a splendid opportunity to enjoy three of our favorite activities—studying old maps, taking a walk and exploring local history.

Portage County gave up the largest part of what became Summit—the townships of Northfield, Twinsburg, Boston, Hudson, Northampton, Stow, Portage, Tallmadge, Coventry and Springfield.

Medina County’s contributions were the townships of Richfield, Bath, Copley and Norton. Stark County provided the southernmost townships of Franklin and Green.

Akron became the county seat on May 20, 1840. Among the other highlights of that historic year, the first court session was held in Akron in July and the Pennsylvania & Ohio Canal opened in August, with the first boat arriving in Akron from Pennsylvania on Aug. 6.

This last detail came to us from Summit County Looks Back, the souvenir program produced by Akron’s Fifty Year Club in celebration of the county’s centennial in 1940.

The course for our 2010 journey was set when Ayers noticed that parts of five streets run along sections of the preSummit County border. They are: • The north-south portion of Major Road, which begins just south of State Route 303 (aka Streetsboro Road) on the Richfield-Boston Township line.

• The north-south portion of Scobie Road, which begins at Oak Hill Road in Boston Township, runs west, then turns south for a short stretch along the Boston-Richfield border before ending at a cul-de-sac, where we saw a horse grazing in a field. Like Major, Scobie is in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, so we found it interesting to note the pride of ownership demonstrated by many private property signs.

• Sand Run Road, from Yellow Creek Road south to West Market Street in Akron.

• Collier Road, which is part of the Copley-Akron border running south from Copley Road to Wadsworth Road (Route 261), which becomes Vernon Odom Boulevard in the city.

• Fifth Street in Barberton, which runs from Fairview Avenue south for more than 15 blocks until it veers southeast and becomes Turkeyfoot Lake Road.

Between Collier and Fifth Street, a section of the old border runs along the west side of Rolling Acres Mall and, just to its south, Greenlawn Cemetery.

We explored all four streets by car, saving our stroll for the area around the Metro Parks’ canal towpath parking lot on Fairview.

It seemed fitting to conclude our visit at the towpath, which has been the focus of so many of our walks. And it seems equally fitting to conclude our report with some other fascinating early local history details, again courtesy of Summit County Looks Back.

John Quincy Adams was the first President to visit Akron. He came by canal boat in 1843 for the dedication of Summit’s first court house. Akron’s first bank opened in 1845, a year before the city’s public school plan was developed and adopted throughout Ohio.

Primitive campsites in CVNP This summer, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is offering five primitive campsites for distance hikers and bicyclists using the nearby Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath and Buckeye trails. The sites—behind Stanford House, 6093 Stanford Road in Peninsula—are available through Oct. 31.

Cost is $18 per camper per night, and there is a six person limit per site. Walkup campers can reserve available sites on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Trail Mix store, 1565 Boston Mills Road in Peninsula. Phone reservations must be made at least three days in advance. Drive up use is not permitted.

o-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent a quarter century establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. Decoy has taken an important place in the Duckhorn Wine Company family of wines, creating a line of wines using fruit harvested from a mix of Estate vineyards and top independent growers (primarily located in the Napa and Anderson valleys). Hot Pursuit of Essential Little Dishes

Patio feasts and grill fests are the cable TV of meals: the bigger the selection, the better. Oh, sure... everyone is gathered round the grill, putting in their requests for rare this and well done that...but the real action is at the tables where those essential little dishes are displayed and ready to accentuate the essence of your outdoor feed!

The following selections will help you meet the challenge. Don’t stop with one. Serve several of these palate-popping counterpoints, and they’ll be talking about your soiree all summer long.

Cheesy, Garlic Fumin’ Salad Crushed garlic ignites the flavors of this salad.

Corn, Cherry Tomato and Avocado Salsa The perfect collection of summer’s finest ~ with a little twist and turn on a salsa theme.

2 ears sweet corn, husked and silk removed 8 small cherry tomatoes, halved

1 head well chilled iceberg or romaine lettuce, outer leaves removed, torn into bite sized pieces 1 medium red onion, cut into thin crosswise slices and slices quartered

1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted and coarsely chopped

6 ounce jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained and cut into quarters

1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil

6 hearts of palm, cut into 1/2 inch thick crosswise slices

1/2 cup red onion, finely diced, rinsed and drained

1 small red bell pepper, seeded, deribbed and thinly sliced

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

Dressing:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

1/4 teaspoon stone ground mustard

1 to 3 fresh jalapenos, seeded and finely chopped

1 large garlic clove, crushed

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1/2 teaspoon salt Several grindings of black pepper

Boil the corn in salted water to cover for 1 minute; drain and remove the kernels.

6 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Place the corn kernels in a medium bowl along with the tomatoes, avocado, basil, onion, lime juice, oil, garlic, jalapeno, salt and pepper.

Arrange the lettuce, onion and artichoke hearts in a large serving bowl. Top with the hearts of palm and sliced red pepper.

3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided use

For the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Slowly add the oil, whisking constantly, until mixture is creamy. Stir in 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese and blend well.

Rinse and drain the red onion after dicing to remove some of that “sharp” flavor.

Toss the salad with the Dressing. Scatter the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese over the top and serve immediately. Serves 6.

Stir together well and serve immediately [or refrigerate, covered, for up to 1 day]. Makes about 2 cups.

1 1/2 cups mayonnaise 3 tablespoons crëme fraiche or sour cream 1/3 cup white vinegar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 6 drops Tabasco sauce Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 head green cabbage, shredded (about 4 to 5 cups) 2 carrots, peeled and grated

For the Dressing: combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir well to blend.

The Taste of Akron runs in conjunction with the annual Akron Arts Expo. It showcases more than 25 of the areas best classic and ethnic restaurants who offer food samples for $2, $4 and $6. The Steak Cookoff was added to the event last year. Between 40-50 applicants submitted recipes, according to Nolan Scales, community event planner for the Akron Recreation Bureau. He anticipates an even hotter competition this year.—JD

Add the shredded cabbage and carrots to the bowl, tossing until thoroughly coated. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serves 6.

Blueberry Cornbread A favorite combination of mine...warm cornbread shot through with blueberries...a contemporary sidekick for grilled ribs.

6 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature 1 cup granulated sugar 3 large eggs at room temperature 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal 2 cups unbleached, all purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 cups milk 1 cup fresh blueberries

Heat oven to 375°F. Grease a 13 x 9 inch baking pan.

Cream the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy. Add the eggs and beat thoroughly. Stir in the cornmeal until combined.

Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Alternately add the flour mixture and the milk to the butter mixture in thirds, beating just to combine after each addition, being careful not to overbeat. Gently fold in the blueberries.

The Akron area running scene is chock-full of trails, running clubs and races.

By Amanda Loudin or Kent resident Gideon Oswitch, the day of the Road Runner Akron Marathon is “just like Christmas morning.” The 45-year-old human resources manager and father of two has finished the 26.2-mile race each of the event’s seven years, and he plans to return this year on Sept. 25. “My entire year’s running revolves around this event,” he says.

Oswitch isn’t alone in his appreciation for the event.

Runner’s World magazine named the event a runner-up for “best value” races in its 2009 reader’s choice awards.

Since its inaugural year in 2003, the event has grown from 3,500 participants to more than 10,500 in 2009.

Runners can choose from the marathon, a half-marathon, a relay and even a kids’ fun run.

What keeps him coming back? It’s “the little things” he says, like a hand shake from the race director for each and every finisher. Things like an easy-to-navigate race expo, free parking and an Olympic-style finish in Canal Park. It’s the swag the finishers get, like Brooks running jackets in 2009.

Anne Bitong, executive director of the event, says that the organizers had to put a cap on participation in some of the distances for the first time in 2009. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised at our growth,” she says. “This has become the largest single-day sporting event in the area.

That was the case for 30-year-old Akron resident Brad Kramer, a magazine editor. “I started running in 2006 and my first race was a 10K,” he says. “The Akron Marathon course came right past my house, and I watched it go by one year.

That led to a steady progression in the length of my runs and the following year, I ran the marathon.”

The Akron Marathon is at the heart of what has become a booming running scene in and around Akron. From growing running clubs to races and everything in between, these days, Akron’s hills are alive with the sound of running.

In good company Stow resident Stacy Rhea is one of the local runners you’re likely to see out and about on Akron’s roads and trails. She’s also all about getting area women out there to join her. The 42-year old multisport athlete is editor of Ohio Sports and Fitness and one of the founders of Grunt Girl Racing, an all-women’s multi-sport club dedicated to taking the intimidation factor out of racing. “We know what its like to be new to sports,” she says. “We want to help women who are new to running or cycling and get them out there in a non-competitive environment.”

Twenty years ago, I wouldn’t see anyone out there. Now it’s crowded, which is a good thing.”

Kramer has noticed a spike in attendance at local races of all distances. “There are also a growing number of events on the calendar,” he says. “You can find a local 5K just about all the time now.”

That’s good for the overall health of area residents, as well as for the economy. The Akron Marathon is keenly aware of this fact. “Our mission and philosophy has been to provide a worldclass event that promotes health and fitness, galvanizes our community and promotes economic development,” Bitong says.

“Eighty percent of our runners come from a two-hour radius of Akron. However, we had representation from 41 states and four countries last year. Once an out-of-town runner travels to Akron and experiences the 125,000 spectators along the course and the hospitality of our enthusiastic volunteers, we have them hooked.”

To that end, the group has established a variety of events aimed at getting women out on the local trails. “We have regular weekend training runs of varying distances scattered throughout the area,” Rhea explains. “We also have social events at places like the Winking Lizard in Hudson, where women can meet the group and learn what we’re all about.”

Grunt Girl is just one of a growing number of running clubs in the area. Hudson’s Vertical Runner sponsors a variety of training runs, as does the Summit Athletic Running Club and area Second Sole locations. All keep updated schedules with different runs and events posted on their websites, and all work with the Akron Marathon to help runners prepare for the race as it gets closer.

When you’re ready for a break on a summer day, stop at Uncorked, a wine bar and coffee shop for drinks, pastries, and light lunches. Pick up tour tickets at the Visitors Center, and continue on to the Exhibit Hall to learn about the development of Roscoe Village through miniature canal building dioramas and a working model of canal locks. At nearby Lake Park, climb aboard The Monticello III, a replica 1800s horsedrawn canal boat, for a 45-minute narrated trip through a restored section of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Zoar, Ohio zca.org Sometimes we drive right by destinations close to home. If you usually fly past the sign for Zoar on I-77 on your way to somewhere else, take time to discover the charm and serenity of this early village.

Zoar was settled in 1817 by a group of German Separatists seeking religious freedom. The Zoarites built Germanstyle structures reminiscent of the homes they left behind in Germany.

Pick up tour tickets at the Zoar Store, which also serves as the welcome center and gift shop. Stroll Zoar’s historic 12block district with stops at 10 restored buildings.

Jimmere also notes how the media have influenced the change. “Women in the media were stereotypically skinny, young and beautiful,” she says, “but advertising by companies like Dove and Lane Bryant, and shows like ‘Sex and the City’ have changed that. Kim (Cattrall) is in her 50s and super hot!”

She notes how the media depict men and women as even more attractive as they age gracefully.

But not everyone’s a television star, and getting back into the dating scene can feel a bit intimidating. Jimmere says the first thing to do is “get your-

self together.” This means coming to terms with your past relationships, understanding they weren’t all good but refusing to focus on them. She says to take responsibility for them, and resolve to stand up for yourself from now on. “If someone cheated on you over and over and you knew it and you stayed, you enabled that person to do that,” she says. “Don’t make excuses, just vow not to do it anymore.”

Whitney Casey, relationship expert for Match.com, also stresses the need to adjust your demeanor and be confident. One way to boost confidence is to be prepared. “Get a first date outfit together with girlfriends. Men should have a woman friend or family member help them pick out something as well.”

Have ‘go-to’ outfits—a sporty one, a movie outfit and something for a really nice occasion. She also recommends thinking of three things you can talk about on a first date, but “not money, your ex or politics!” she says. “It can be things like the best meal you ever had or what you did on your 21st birthday.

Don’t talk about your kids, talk about you. You’re still interesting and should put yourself 100 percent first.”

But before you go on a first date, you have to find one! It’s not as difficult as you may think if you just know where to look. One place an increasing number of mature individuals are looking is online. About 20 percent of Match.com members are older than 50—its fastest growing demographic.

Casey notes people have come to use the Internet for many aspects of daily life, such as groceries, gifts and bills, so it makes sense to use it in their dating. “It only reinforces how doing things online makes life easier,” she

says. “Once people make that change, they’re really into it.” Casey explains how many mature daters have 20-yearold kids who are helping them sign up on the Internet and make that change.

“People want to be more efficient about dating,” she says. “Online dating also gives you the security zone to meet someone, just like in the ‘good old days,’ even though it’s a new technology.”

Another method Casey suggests is telling all your friends and family members that you’re single and you want to date, so they’re on the lookout for someone you might be interested in.

Also, develop a presence at certain places around town where managers or bartenders can do some scouting for you. “Tell them that you’re looking to meet someone and have the staff keep their eyes out for you,” she says. “You’ll have someone in a public place scoping out the area at all times. They get to know and like you and want to help you. They love to play matchmaker!”

Mature daters also have certain advantages. “Older individuals tend to say what they think and don’t care what anyone thinks about it,” Jimmere says.

“They put up with less. They think ‘if you can’t give me what I need and want, I’m moving on.’” Casey adds they are very open to dating people who don’t fit a certain criteria. It’s more about compatibility. “Young people are concerned if someone will work out with their career or make a good mother or father,” she says. “Most people dating later on are just looking for a good companion.”

Jimmere says the main thing is to identify what you want in a person, even make a list of qualities you consider must-haves. “I found I was able to weed out people in a matter of weeks by going by what I wrote down,” she says. “It keeps you from getting hurt, as well as keeps things moving.” She says it’s OK to be a SNOB—Someone who settles for Nothing Other than the Best. Casey agrees and urges people to remember to just have fun because, “you still have a very vibrant life ahead.”

hink cosmetic surgery is a thing for the stars?

Actually more and more people are getting some work done, even if they aren’t on the big screen. “I think it’s perfectly acceptable to want to look good,” says Dr. James Libecco of Akron Skin Center in Fairlawn. “People will come in and say ‘I hate to seem vain, but is there something you can do about this?’” If you have concerns, he recommends getting a consultation or talking to a friend who has had something done. “Don’t hesitate to want to look good,” he says.

And that goes for the guys, too! Dr. Faisal Quereshy of Visage Surgery Institute in Medina says he gets a lot of men in for procedures.

“Many of them want eye lifts,” he says, “especially men in sales who are competing with younger people and want to look their best.”

Procedure: Eyelift What’s involved?

An eyelift involves removing the extra loose skin on the eyelid and the bagginess around the lower eye. This extra skin is usually a result of genetics or excessive sun exposure. The procedure involves light sedation or anesthesia and takes about an hour and a half.

Who makes a good candidate?

Quereshy says an eyelift is a good option for someone who looks in the mirror and thinks they look generally tired, or like they’re getting older. “What they’re really looking at is their eyes,” he says. Eyelifts are usually performed on patients in their mid-30s to 50s and above. But Quereshy says it’s better to get it done sooner rather than later because younger skin heals more quickly.

What’s the recovery like?

Quereshy says the recovery depends on the individual’s age and health, but usually it’s three to five days. “It’s not debilitating—people can still go out,” he says.

Some may experience minor swelling or bruising. There’s also a risk of infection, pain or bleeding but he says only 2 to 3 percent of patients experience these.

“Not taking enough tissue away can also be an issue,” he says. “Patients may need to come back for a touch-up, but I’d rather take less than more because it’s easy to take skin away and not so easy to put it back.”

How much does it cost?

The average cost, not including anesthesia and facility charges, is about $1,500 to $2,000 for the upper or lower eye.

What’s involved?

Botox is a protein that’s used to limit overactive muscles that create lines, particularly in the upper face. It blocks the signal that causes the muscles to contract and lead to wrinkles. “It’s not the harmful toxin some people view it as,” Libecco says. “It’s just another medicine, a sculpting tool we work with to tailor the strength of the muscles.” Botox treatments can be done fairly quickly after a short consultation. It usually takes about five injections into the facial muscles with a fine needle. No anesthesia is required, and people can go right back to work afterwards.

Who makes a good candidate?

Libecco says Botox is versatile. “It’s good for people with wrinkles at the corner of the eyes or those bunny lines when you squint your nose,” he says. Botox is good for someone who doesn’t need a full facelift or major reconstruction.

The treatment can take about a week to kick in, but some see results in two days.

Libecco says side effects can include mild bruising or sometimes a headache, though this is common in only a small percentage of patients. “Millions have been treated with Botox since the ‘70s,” he says. “We have a good idea of side effects, but they’re very minimal.”

Libecco says some people can also build up a tolerance to the product so it doesn’t work quite as well. Botox provides temporary results, so patients can come in three or four times a year for another treatment.

Lehman says most people who get an abdominoplasty are in their 30s or 40s and have had one to three children or lost a lot of weight. “The skin gets overstretched and no matter how much they work out they can’t change it,” he says.

“An abdominoplasty is common when it’s warmer and people are concerned about looking good in a bathing suit.” Lehman also says a good candidate is someone healthy who isn’t overweight and doesn’t smoke. People with diabetes or high blood pressure usually can have the procedure done, but they require more medical attention.

What’s the recovery like?

Some people can get back to work in a week, but two weeks recovery is more common. Full exercise isn’t possible until after a month. Risks include infection, bleeding and blood clots. “We give patients compression stockings during surgery to reduce clots in the legs that can go to the lungs,” Lehman says. “For higher risk patients, we give them medication to thin the blood.”

How much does it cost?

Lehman says an abdominoplasty runs about $5,000 to $6,000, plus a surgeon’s fee and the cost of anesthesia, medication and an operating room charge.

AtNetPlus was established in 1998 with an initial stock investment of $250 from each of the four founders. In June 2004, Jay Mellon and Jim Laber bought out the interests of the other two partners. They currently maintain equal ownership of this growing company.

AtNetPlus customizes IT solutions for small and mid-sized organizations. The focus is to deliver cutting-edge services that fit clients’ needs, expectations and budget, acting as a technology adviser to customers and working to develop a long term, cost effective IT strategy for each of them.

Over the past six years, AtNetPlus has more than doubled annual revenue. The firm has gone from a staff of five to employing more than 20 people. In 2008, the company purchased a new office condominium in Stow. The move almost tripled available office space and included a custom-built, data center. The data center features fully redundant critical services such as power and Internet, as well as dedicated cooling and biometric security.

Ron Marhofer Auto Family marhofer.com

The Marhofer Auto Family had its beginning shortly after World War I when Chester Marhofer, upon returning from the service, opened an auto repair shop in a barn which stood where the Chevrolet showroom is today. The barn was used previously as a stable for the stage coach horses that passed through Stow on their way to Pittsburgh.

Jack Marhofer, Ron’s father, became the owner of the business in 1928 and continued to operate it as a repair shop until 1933, when the first franchise with Chevrolet was signed to sell and service their products.

Jack was one of the very few dealers in the country who spent many years as a mechanic and garage operator before becoming a dealer. Providing quality service is deeply ingrained in the company’s history.

In 1957, Marhofer Chevrolet was incorporated and the business hired its first full-time salesman. The City of Stow experienced unusual growth in succeeding years and the company grew with it. In

1972, the dealership was purchased from Jack Marhofer by his son, John, who sold it to his brother, Ron Marhofer, the current owner, in 1975.

The company has witnessed tremendous growth under Ron’s leadership. A 14,000square-foot Collision Center and Parts Warehouse, on Commerce Drive, was completed and occupied in 1979 to provide larger facilities to serve a growing customer base. In 1983, Marhofer Chevrolet became the largest volume new and used car dealer in Summit, Portage and Medina counties.

This growth was followed by the opening of a new Hyundai dealership in Cuyahoga Falls during 1988, followed by Mitsubishi and Saturn dealerships in 1990 and a Lincoln-Mercury dealership in 1992, all located near Chapel Hill in Cuyahoga Falls.

In 1995, a second Saturn dealership opened in North Canton, and in 2005 a second Hyundai dealership opened in Green.

The company’s rapid growth and success is attributed to the philosophies of joint deci-

sion making and employee empowerment.

In 1990, Ron established Bucks Creek Learning Center, an educational facility, devoted entirely to developing leadership, facilitating teamwork and building a family type work environment among the more than 300 employees. The company’s exceeds customer expectations and provides a “Best Pricing” strategy to release customers from the anxiety of negotiating for a car. Further, sales team members are compensated based upon their contributions to the team, unit sales and customer satisfaction ratings, not by the traditional profit-based commission structure used by most dealerships.

This has helped stimulate an attitude of true teamwork, cooperation and genuine employee ownership within the company.

The business has always operated under the Golden Rule, with service to customers and the community as its foremost concern.

John initiated an additional level of service to the business strategy. Lucky Shoes provided not only “shoes you wanted” but now carried orthotic-friendly shoes “you needed” that looked great, too! John accomplished this by returning to college and becoming a certified pedorthist. He upgraded the level of customer care to include the free services of a pedorthic staff. Today, Lucky Shoes employs seven board-certified pedorthists.

A certified pedorthist is responsible for carefully evaluating footwear along with a known or diagnosed problem and then dispensing proper fitting and functional shoes to relieve or accommodate foot conditions, temporary or chronic. Proper footwear in function and fit is essential to pedorthic solutions to foot problems.

The Lucky Shoes buying staff purchases comfortable styles that can fit the lifestyles of its customers as well as support the orthotics needed. In 1999, John acted on the opportunity to open New Balance athletic concept stores. Their similarity to Lucky Shoes, specializing in hard-to-find sizes and widths ranging from infants to adults from 2A (very narrow) to 6E (extremely wide), made it a perfect fit. From 1999 to 2009, eight New Balance Only stores were opened in Akron, Canton, Cleveland and Columbus.

Lucky shoes has been in the area for 90 years and continues to grow. John, the fourth generation to operate the family business, has redirected the chain and is preparing for the next generation.

I

think Stephen McNulty, curator and general manager of the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, really hit on something when he described the people working and making a difference downtown as big fish in a small pond. But the more poignant part of our conversation was when he said, “Not only that, we like the fish in our pond.”

In writing the Canton Living supplement for the last four years, I have had the opportunity to talk to many innovators. They’re creative people who start or manage successful businesses, and they’re choosing to do so right here in Canton, Ohio. But why? Let’s face it—many of the businesses could make more money in bigger cities that probably have better weather. Yet, they make Canton their home base. Over and over again, I ask business owners, especially young professionals, that very question. And just about every time, I get the same answer.

“It’s the people,” Gary Zeigler Jr. told me. Zeigler’s a young guy, married for a little over a year, who works for the Stark County Auditor’s Office. In April, he and his brother, along with their wives and their mother, opened The Brownstone Steakhouse downtown. He’s investing in Canton’s future because he genuinely likes the people here and appreciates the relationships he has built with surrounding businesses.

It’s clear that for Canton to thrive—to really revitalize itself—we need more young professionals to share the sentiments McNulty and Zeigler have expressed. Perhaps I’m biased as a young professional myself, but I believe that Canton needs to find a way to attract and retain YPs if the city is to succeed.

Unfortunately, liking your neighbors isn’t enough to keep people here. We need more jobs, more entertainment and more opportunities for involvement.

Thankfully, organizations like ystark!, ArtsinStark, the local chambers of commerce and others are doing their part to create an environment where YPs are engaged and empowered to make a positive difference in the community.

But that sense of fellowship that McNulty described to me is a key component.

Just like I don’t believe professionals will stay in an area simply because they like the people, I also don’t believe a high-paying job or abundant entertainment is enough to keep someone happy long-term. It’s the personal relationships we make that really sustain and inspire us.

I live in Canton first and foremost because my family is here. Also, I have a great job working for an outstanding company! My career is very important to me, and there is potential for creativity and growth at Aultman.

What is your favorite local hangout?

I actually do not have a favorite hangout because I like to experience all of the variety that Canton has to offer. I am a bit of a foodie and definitely like to frequent the different restaurants such as Pete’s Grill and Peter Shear’s.

Why did you become involved with ystark!?

Ystark! is a fantastic initiative to motivate young people to be involved in the community professionally and socially. It provides a means for YPs to share ideas, network and also have fun! I am particularly interested in being involved because it is an excellent way to mature professionally and meet new people. Also, they host many interesting and diverse events such as: CEO luncheons, monthly meet-ups and PerplexCity.

What do you think the area can do to engage more young professionals?

Canton would attract and engage more YPs with a larger and more flourishing downtown scene. The addition of more shops, clubs and restaurants would satisfy our current residents’ entertainment needs while simultaneously catching the attention of tourists.

What advice do you have for YPs? My advice to other YPs would be to get out there and get involved with as much as you can in your profession and your community. There are always opportunities to do more; you just have to be open to finding them.

What do you think the area can do to engage more young professionals?

Canton and Stark County as a whole need to promote small to medium size businesses. We have seen over the past 20-30 years the hardships this area has incurred when large companies shut their doors or relocate. We cannot rely on a large company coming back into town to save us. Promoting small to medium size businesses along with the continued support of young entrepreneurs will assist in keeping, retaining and getting YPs engaged in the community.

What advice do you have for YPs?

My advice for local YPs is to stay patient, be realistic and get involved. Everyone knows the job market is rough and very competitive, however there are jobs in this area; you just need to know where to look. Be realistic. As a YP you should not expect to get paid six figures and have a corner office right out of college. Bigger market cities can potentially offer you a higher salary but you will not maximize your dollars based on the higher cost of living. Get involved. You can make a difference in your community. There are plenty of organizations that need smart driven YPs, however, make sure you get involved in something you are truly passionate about.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Joseph Saxton Gallery explores the history of photography.

tep inside the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, and you’ll find it difficult to believe the building was once the site of a Cadillac dealership, which was later converted into a parking garage. Owner Tim Belden had the creative vision to transform the old garage into a spacious gallery in which he could display much of his personal collection and explore the entire breadth and history of photography all in one space.

But Belden didn’t just invest in one building. He purchased the entire block, thereby investing in downtown Canton as a whole. The success of his business venture is dependent upon the city itself flourishing.

He believes that success is attainable, in part due to the large community of people downtown who are committed to perpetuating their art. “It’s going to take a long time,” Belden explains, “but they’ll outlast the people purely motivated for financial development.”

It’s that community of like-minded individuals and the fun atmosphere First Fridays have created downtown that led Belden and his wife to open the gallery there. “I believe history is a creative incubator,” he adds.

Stephen McNulty, the gallery’s curator and general manager, likens the professionals and visionaries in downtown Canton to big fish in a small pond. “Not only that, we like the fish in our pond,” he says, describing the feeling of fellowship that keeps everyone downtown.

Belden hired McNulty as curator and general manager.

Though McNulty is not a classically trained photographer, his years of traveling alongside National Geographic and BBC photographers as a biosecurity student naturally led

him to pick up a hobby in photography. He had been shooting at the upper level for about five years before becoming involved with the gallery. McNulty’s role involves planning upcoming shows, competitions and workshops, and overseeing the gallery’s day-to-day operations such as accounting and events.

The gallery’s main collection begins with Jean-Eugene Atget and goes around the outer edges of the room to wind up with modern contemporary photography. Many of the images throughout the gallery are available for purchase. In the middle of the room, each smaller kiosk represents individual types of photography, such as depression-era photography, the post-depression boom in the 1950s, conflict photography and performing arts. Monthly Movies On the final Wednesday of each month, the public is invited to the gallery to view special photography-related film screenings. Complimentary coffee is provided, and guests are invited to bring a snack to share. Admission is free, but a courtesy RSVP is encouraged to plan seating.

by Steve McCurry. Take a close look at the name on the gallery’s images, and you’ll notice that more than a few were photographed by Belden himself.

At the back of the gallery is a space that was originally intended to be a studio but ended up becoming an excellent spot to showcase rotating exhibits. “It’s the studio space I always wanted and still don’t have,” Belden jokes. The special exhibitions change every three months or so.

A strong community is our greatest asset.

ong before Gervasi Vineyard and Italian Bistro celebrated its grand opening March 16, I heard about how marvelous it was going to be. The winery and restaurant had been well-hyped basically since breaking ground a year earlier, in March 2009. Once Gervasi officially opened, what started as a quiet murmur became a loud roar.

Everywhere I went, people commented on the magnificent grounds, the opulent details and the delicious food. Despite hearing nothing but rave reviews, when I arrived at Gervasi for the first time, my jaw literally dropped. As we drove through the entrance, my friend and I expressed our disbelief that Canton, Ohio, had something so reminiscent of the vineyards I had toured in Central California. I should have known I would be impressed, but reality far exceeded my already high expectations.

We were a bit early for our dinner reservation, so we took a few minutes to tour the grounds. It was cold, dark and wet outside, but we could still see the potential for the property, imagining ourselves enjoying a summer evening out on the patio overlooking the

spring-fed lake. When we made our way inside the former 1800s barn, all our senses were engaged. We couldn’t help looking around, taking in every detail. The loud chatter of a full house of happy customers and the heavenly smell of Italian food filled the air.

We each enjoyed a wine flight to sample the Gervasi wines.

Because the vineyard is newly planted, it will take three to four years for it to mature. In the meantime, Gervasi is buying grapes from California, Washington, Oregon and Ohio to make nine varieties of wine. Later this summer, three more wines will debut—Primitivo, Chardonnay and an Italian import Lambrusco. Of the wines I tasted so far, Luce Luce—the Pinot Grigio—was my favorite.

Dinner guests will be pleasantly surprised to find that Gervasi Bistro’s menu is so affordable.

You’ll notice the higher priced items actually come family-style and are meant to be shared. In addition to our wine flights, we had the bruschetta trio, a bianco pizza and lobster formaggio pasta, all for just a little more than $20 per person. You could easily pay that for a lower quality meal at a chain restaurant that lacks ambiance.

If you plan to visit the bistro for dinner on a weekend, you better plan ahead. General Manager Scott Swaldo says the restaurant books a couple weeks out for prime dining hours on Friday and Saturday nights. If you don’t mind dining late (after 8:30 or 9 p.m.), you might snag reservations a few days in advance.

Another option, prefect for those looking for lighter far, is the Bistro Loft. Located within the restaurant, the upstairs loft provides a relaxed environment to enjoy wine and/or appetizers.

Seating at the trendy lounge chairs and couches is first-come, first-served.

The bistro’s basement is available for private rentals and provides the ideal space for rehearsal dinners, bridal and baby showers or corporate meetings.

The patio, which is located just off the basement entrance, opens this month and will have seating for 150 guests. Unlike the bistro, there will be no reservations for patio dining. It will be first-come, first-served with hostess seating. The area will

Ted bought the 55-acre property, seeing it as an n excellent opportunity to turn the land into something his family could enjoyy now and in future generations. He didn’t know anything about winemaking when the project began, but he thought it had potential to provide a destination for people and give back to the community.

The business has truly become a family affair, with Linda Swaldo (Ted’s wife, Scott’s mom) and Chrissy Blackerby (Scott’s sister) overseeing marketplace operations. In addition, the Swaldos have hired Chef Jerry Risner and Jeff Hicks, sales and marketing manager.

Although the family didn’t have much background on winemaking before beginning this venture, they’ve certainly made it work. “We’re creative and surround ourselves with people who are good at what we don’t know how to do, and who know how to execute it,” Scott says, describing how the family has been pretty fearless with the process.

“As long as you know what you don’t know, I think you’re OK,” he adds.

The land was the site of a gangster shootout in the 1922, when a couple of bandits on the run sought shelter on the farm. Sheri’s Sweets 401 Market Ave. N., Canton When Sheri’s Sweets opened in downtown Canton in November 2008, candy was the main focus, with a few desserts thrown in as well. Then, in January 2009, Sheri Morckel added lunches to the mix. Now you’ll find everything from quiche and fresh fruit to scones, brownies and homemade candies. But 24

it’s Morckel’s buckeyes that got everything going. She would sell her halfpound buckeyes down at OSU and even received license to use the school’s logo.

Morckel began making her homemade buckeyes for distributors, manufacturing up to 20,000 per week. Production expanded, eventually leading Morckel to her current facility. The buckeyes take on many forms, from buckeye Easter eggs in spring to buckeyes on Canton Living 2010

a stick year-round. In addition to the buckeyes, other top sellers include brownies, cookies and scones. As for candy, my personal pick is the chocolate covered toasted coconut, available in milk or dark chocolate.

Sheri’s Sweets is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and during monthly First Friday festivities.

The Brownstone Steakhouse 585 Market Ave. N., Canton The newest addition to the downtown restaurant scene is The Brownstone Steakhouse, opened by brothers Michael and Gary Zeigler Jr. and their mother, Terri. It’s truly a family affair, with Michael’s wife, Traci, and Gary’s wife, Kendra, also very involved in the business. Your likely to see at least one of the family members there at any given time, and if you do, I urge you to strike up a conversation. In talking to the Zeiglers, it’s apparent just how dedicated they are to providing exceptional customer service. Not only that, they provide an upscale atmosphere without being pretentious or having upscale prices. The dinner menu features a great selection of appetizers, salads, sides, seafood and, of course, steaks and other meats. (Note: The Courtyard Kobe Sliders appetizer is a must try!)

While all the prices are incredibly affordable, I was most surprised by the values on the lunch menu. Prices range from $8 to $10 for burgers, steak or chicken sandwiches, and include steak fries and Brownstone chips along with your choice of coffee, tea or a soft drink. It’s rare to find a deal that good at many fast food joints! The restaurant is divided into two sections. On one side, you have the long bar, four bigscreen TVs, a lounge area and high top tables. The main dining room features a smaller bar and additional tables. The full menu is available on either side, and on weekends guests can enjoy live music in the bar. Plus, with its proximity to the Palace Theatre, it’s the perfect spot for a dinner and a movie date night.

The Brownstone Steakhouse is open Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.-midnight; and Saturday, 4 p.m.-2 a.m. It is closed on Sundays for private parties. The Brownstone’s website is currently under construction, but in the meantime you can keep updated on events and information through their Facebook page or by calling the restaurant at 330-580-4444.

Don’t let the name fool you. While the Canton Classic Car museum has its fair share of automobiles, including 45 rare and unusual classics, it’s much more than that. The museum specializes in nostalgia, from toys and games to political memorabilia and remnants from Meyers Lake Park, and much more. “You’re guaranteed to see something you had,” says Char Lautzenheiser, museum director.

The inventory is part of the privately owned collection of the late Marshall Belden Sr., who established the museum in 1978 and had a strong desire to preserve history. Belden’s wife, Florence, is the woman behind the museum’s layout. Although the museum has plenty of items not to be touched, Lautzenheiser is working to make it more kid-friendly, and with that comes many interactive exhibits that are fun for children of all ages.

The Laffing Lady is Still Laughing

eople have strong feelings about Beulah; they either loved her hearty laugh or hated her for scaring them silly. For anyone who visited Meyers Lake Park, the photo above likely brings back memories. Beulah the Laffing Lady, also known as “Laffing Sal,” from the Laff in the Dark ride, was a fixture at the park, and one that probably haunted many youngsters.

The Laffing Lady found a new home last year in the McKinley Museum’s newest permanent exhibit, “The Stark County Story.” Her inner parts have been repaired, her smile has been polished, and she’s even gotten a new wardrobe with four new dresses made by museum executive director Joyce Yut’s

For those who never had the pleasure of a day of fun at the now defunct amusement park, The Laffing Lady may still look familiar. In the 1930s, the Old King Cole Paper Mache Co. in Louisville made “Laffing Sal” attractions, which could be found at amusement parks nationwide.

Even if you’re not a fan of The Laffing Lady, the museum is worth a visit. “The Stark County” story features 200 years worth of Stark County history, in a fresh, new display that makes much better use of the museum’s space than the previous galleries did. Summer Camp Spending Summers at Camp Ledgewood

C

hildhood is a time of exploring different things—ice skating, gymnastics, soccer—but one activity that has become part of many women’s childhood memories is camping as a Girl Scout. Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula has kept the tradition alive since C.W. Seiberling of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. bought the land in the early 1930s. The first year, 123 girls attended.

Last year, more than 5,000 girls enjoyed camping on the 400 acres of woodland in the boundaries of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

In the camp’s early years, Harvey Firestone provided riding horses so the girls could be instructed in horsemanship. Since then, the scope of the Girls Scouts program has widened to include interests such as boating, sailing, cooking, fishing and archery. Early campers stayed in tents, but today the camp also offers heated cabins, Adirondack units or platform tents. There are also shelters and buildings for day outings.

that the camp is actually located on historic Indian territory, and that it’s been kept as natural as possible so girls can fully experience camping in the wilderness.

Amy Bennett, director of program services, says the memories and skills girls gain from camping last a lifetime. Camping also helps girls build self-esteem and social skills, as well as develop an appreciation for nature. “It’s truly an opportunity for girls to grow, explore and have fun,” she says.

West agrees, and she encourages any one who has been a scout, led a troop or is interested to come volunteer as a site monitor or other position to pass on what they have learned. “It’s so much fun,” she says. “It brings out the little girl in all of us.”
