My Best of the Best >> Each year, the readers of akronlife send in their picks for the absolute best things, places, people and services in the city. This master list of fan-favorites is inspired by moments that happen in their daily lives.

Memories are built on these small everyday moments. Some of them are nothing more than a happy snapshot of a life, while others build up to something meaningful— something that makes you smile every time you think about it.

While we were working on the 2015 “Best of the City” list, I couldn’t help but smiling about a few of them. Like the many readers who sent in their favorite places, a lot of the places listed on our “Best of the City” list are the sources of some very happy memories in my life. When combined, the places listed map out a chapter in my life that has brought me so much joy. The story of how I met a great guy named Andrew, who —spoiler alert— I married, is built around the places and things on this list.

In those early days of our relationship, we grabbed Galley Boys and milkshakes at Swenson’s, in the middle of the winter (because let’s face it, they are too good to only enjoy when it’s warm). We climbed across fallen trees and lazily walked the trails at the Gorge Metro Park.

We strapped on ice skates and glided around the rink at Lock 3. We rocked out to The Black Keys on raining spring days, while applying for graduate school programs and real world jobs. We gazed at the beautiful works of art at Don Drumm’s Studios and made a wish list of what we would someday feature in our home.

It may seem cliché to say that meeting my husband is one of the best things to happen to me, and it’s definitely a little old-fashioned, but it is still true. In him I have a confidant, a steadfast friend and my match. It is strange to think back to a time when we weren’t together, however when we first met he really wanted nothing to do with me.

I first came to Akron as a student. Originally from the other side of the state, I wanted to try a new place where no one knew me, but where I could easily get home within a few hours. The University of Akron was a great change from the small farming town I had always lived in. To me, it was—and still is—a metropolis full of possibility.

I was determined to figure out who I was outside of who my parents were, a journey that is still in progress. Though I am no longer anywhere near the path I started on when I first came to Akron, it has woven its way to where I am now.

I met Andrew halfway through my college career and I think he sincerely disliked me. Not unjustly so, since I had accidently taken his job at our campus newspaper. He had aspired to be a journalist and I had wanted a future in classical ballet. When a series of stress fractures and bad luck removed me from that path, I hobbled onto a new path as a journalist. My best friend had been working at the campus paper and helped me in the door—literally, I was usually on crutches or in a compression boot. But once through that heavy door, I found that I really enjoyed the newspaper.

I was so excited about the product that we were producing, that I would often arrive to my classes early to pass out papers. This innocent gesture always earned me a glare from one mysterious guy in the back of one of my classes. I didn’t know who he was, so I always made sure to offer him two papers. He consistently declined. After an awkward amount of time, my friend finally told me that he was the guy that I had replaced at the paper. Oops. I stopped bothering him after that.

This glaring guy and I kept bumping into each other. In line for much beloved and much needed coffee, stuck in tiny classrooms, and finally, stuck in a car together on our way to a writing conference. He stopped just being the guy that glared at me from the back of the room, he became the Andrew that I married. We helped each other towards graduation and towards the future. He sat up with me as I finalized my entrance essay for graduate school, held my hand while I waited for my acceptance letter, and proudly wore a Syracuse shirt on my first day. We switched places when we met and, so far, it has only been for the better.

For us, this city became an empty page where we could write the beginnings of our story. It certainly isn’t Nicholas Sparks material, but it is our real life story. While I was trying to find myself in the rubber city, I accidently found him. Meeting Andrew and then falling for him, brought about some of the best of times for me. Times so good, that they eclipse the bad ones. This year’s “Best of the City” list is full of things that spark wonderful moments, creating memories that build onto our stories. We hope that you keep having amazing moments in The 330 and continue to share them with us.

Akron NFL Draftees start “Akron’s Very Own Foundation” Devin Smith, Doran Grant and Shaquille Riddick are aiming to give back to the community this summer as their NFL salaries begin. All three men were picks in the NFL draft this year. The three akronites are setting up Akron’s Very Own Foundation, which will focus on pushing art, acting, music and poetry for kids. They hope to see their foundation running strong and in local classrooms as soon as possible.

The American Red Cross: Michael Parks has filled the position of Northeast Ohio Regional Executive for The American Red Cross. Parks previously served 35 years in the Coast Gaurd and is a retired Commander of the Ninth Coast Gaurd District.

NBC Network and LeBron James have teamed up to launch a game show that will feature teams of two people who will compete for lifechanging amounts of money.

The show is still untitled and in the making. Interviews for applicants took place earlier this year for 330 natives at Fred’s Diner, but you can still send in a casting submission to dreamchancetv.com.

Akron Children’s Hospital: Akron Children’s Hospital is welcoming a new office in Warren this month. The new Warren office holds a Pediatrics Primary Care facility accepting regular appoitments, as well as walk-ins during their walk-in hours.

A Stow man shot himself in the leg, then told authorities he was the victim of an attempted carjacking. Officers became

suspicious when, upon receiving a pen to fill out the police report, the man stabbed himself in the hand.

Akron’s interim mayor Garry Moneypenny resigned after just 8 days following a “too personal encounter” with a co-worker. The

mayoral job will now be offered to city residents on a first-come basis.

A horse shut down part of I-271 in Macedonia after almost destroying the trailer it was being transported in. After

intervention from authorities, the horse finally arrived at the glue factory in complete serenity.

Concerned citizens of the city of Brimfield aren’t sold on plans to erect a life-size, bronze statue of native Jani Lane, onetime singer for hair metal band, Warrant. “I

know he was from here and all,” said one protestor, “but everybody knows Brimfield’s more of a Winger town.”

The other day, beset by a rare call to creativity and overcome by the beauty of a cool, summer day (not to mention a deep disinclination to perform pressing, though very dirty, chores), I gazed deeply into the fluffy, puffy cumulous clouds inches from my skull and wondered aloud, “What should we have for dinner?” This query is neither uncommon nor insignificant, though where it led me that day was a bit out of the ordinary (though not uncharacteristic).

Recently, my family and I visited a friend’s farm and toured her solar-powered, earthen home; upon leaving, we wondered aloud about the path that led her to off-grid living and, ultimately, a life growing certified organic greens. This friend has shared bits and pieces, compelling plot points involving a farming internship and years in a graduate chemistry program, but in the end, her path is hers and I can never hope to understand it the way she does.

It’s not idle wonderment, all this path pondering. As full-time farmers, we’re dependent upon the kind folks in town to purchase our sundries, 10

so we peddle proteins every Saturday at the farmers market. Years of running a coffee shop taught me an invaluable lesson, one I now apply to standing behind a folding, plastic banquet table, hawking meats: People like to talk. And, presumably because my wife and I don’t fit the mold of your typical farmers (we both own straw hats, but limit their usage to on-farm tasks), people often feel compelled to ask us how in the world we ended up farming. My response, after cautioning them against the phrase “ended up” and the finality it imposes upon a pair of wanderlust-stricken idealists, is to tell them our path to farming started at the dinner table.

Conscious eating isn’t new, nor can I claim we put an original twist on it. Though most people don’t scan their suburban dinner plates and, a few years later, find themselves ankle deep in pig manure, some do, and I can’t pretend we’re the first family to drive a U-Haul up a gravel driveway to fill an old farmhouse with anachronistic Target furnishings. That we began choosing products containing the descriptors “all-natural” and “organic” some ten years ago, right after our first child was born, is commonplace enough to border on cliché. We sought out local products when everybody else did, learned to cook from hit TV shows, gathered recipes from websites like Allrecipes and Pinterest. We’re similar enough to townsfolk to serve as a heedful warning against an unchecked curiosity in homesteading.

The dinner tables my wife and I have owned over the course of our fourteen-year marriage serve as chapter breaks in the story of our life so far. Our first was a two-seater bistro table, tall and small, the perfect fit for our lowrent, one bedroom apartment—it fit a pair of microwave dinners just fine. A few years later, conventionally employed and sleeping in a suburban house, we bought an actual dining room set, a faux-antique number with a stainless steel top. We moved that heavy thing from one house to the next, through shifting employment conditions, adding chairs as we added children, one day making the decision to eat every meal prepared in our house at this surface. We celebrated culinary successes, powered through failures and learned to savor both conversation and flavor at its increasingly scuffed tabletop.

Then, almost two years ago, we unloaded that stainless steel beast from the U-Haul, set it up in our new farmhouse dining room and realized our big, beautiful table was actually pretty small. Dwarfed by the centuries-old gathering space it occupied, we saw, as if for the first time, our son perched at the end like

a vagabond, our daughters’ shoulders touching as they speared that first piece of bacon produced here on the farm. The first guest to visit our farm—luckily a bachelor who journeyed our way solo—took up the last inch or two of tabletop real estate, and we worried over the larger groups promising to travel our way.

We volunteered to host holiday events and envisioned brothers, sisters, cousins crowding our couches while balancing cranberry sauce and red wine.

But we’re homesteaders, right? We live to solve problems. My wife found plans for a DIY farmhouse table with room for ten online and, after a few days of sawing, screwing and sanding, we’d built a not-too-shabby dining room table that better fit the room, our family and the people parading through the farmhouse. Our beloved, old table moved to the kitchen for spillover or impromptu meals.

We produced more and more of the raw products we cooked with, our meals and dining space both mounting a case for our dream of self-sufficiency.

So the answer to my question posed to that deep-dimensioned summer sky? Pork chops, an easy call for a pig farmer, but the sky beckoned something else, something new. I wanted a family dinner under those clouds. I set to work scrounging up scrap lumber from around the farm, jotted down some numbers on scrap paper and, totally on a whim, began building. Within an hour I had a four-legged frame and, after a quick trip to the pile of fence planks we salvaged from a horse farm last summer that looms against the back edge of the farm, I’d cobbled together a rustic tabletop. My wife retrieved a bench I built a while back from the side pasture, and we both gazed with delight upon our brand-new outdoor dining table.

We ate pork chops under the open sky, surrounded by chickens, dogs and farm cats and, though I can’t read the meaning just yet, I suspect we turned the page on another chapter. If it doesn’t rain tonight, we’ll eat chicken outside for dinner, but that’s another story for another day. / Rodney Wilson is either a pig farmer who writes or a writer who farms pigs. Either way, he’s got a freezer full of bacon and a finished manuscript, and he’s trying to sell both.

Making summer sweeter / Sweet corn from Szalay’s farm and market proves fresh is best /

For many, fresh corn is a seasonal must. This cookout staple is often a feature dish during summer meals.

When browsing the aisles of your local grocers for this veggie, you may wonder how it made it from the field to your cart. Some of that sweet corn begins its journey to your table at Szalay’s on Riverview Road in Peninsula.

With over 200 acres of sweet corn on their farm, the third-generation owners of Szalay’s Sweet Corn and Farm, supply grocery stores and families alike with their deliciously sweet fresh produce.

Paula Szalay, the owner, says they strive for a freshness you just can’t beat. Customers even greet the tractors coming in from the field. “When you ship something, you don’t know if it’s three days old or three weeks old. My customers are actually standing there waiting for the corn to come in from the fields. They know it’s fresh,” says Szalay.

This family is grooming the fourth and fifth generation Szalays to take over the business, from son and daughter Johnny and Georgia, to six-year-old Eva and Little Johnny.

I heard that you have some of the best sweet corn.

What is your secret?

PS: Hard work and long hours! But actually we are down in the Valley, right in the middle of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, so we have river bottom soil. Between the soil and the location of the Valley—which gives you evening dew and the temperature drops down at night time—it makes the corn sweeter.

Which month is your sweet corn the sweetest?

PS: It’s at its sweetest from about the third week of July until about the middle of September.

Corn is a big part of your everyday life. Do you ever get sick of it?

PS: No. We actually eat corn almost every day. Even though it’s a bi-colored corn, ours is the honey and cream variety. However it changes every four or five days. They have different textures, different flavors, some have more corn flavor, some a sweeter flavor, so they're all different.

Similar to how there are all different types of red wine, there are different types of honey and cream corn.

When the dinner bell rings, how does your family chow down on this veggie?

PS: Since I eat it almost every day, we eat it different ways. Sometimes we eat it raw when we’re out in the field. If we’re in a hurry, we’ll just grab an ear, husk it and eat it. We have it roasted, especially when we have one of our eateries. Pop it in a pan on the stove or wrap it around a wet napkin and warm it in the microwave. You can’t mess it up; it’s a great vegetable.

Szalay’s isn’t just a farming operation. Tell us a little about the Weekend Eatery.

PS: We have three huts going on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The first one is the grill. It has five different types of delicious sandwiches. And then next to it is the corn roaster, and with that we have fresh-squeezed lemonade and Southern Style sweet tea. For dessert we have fresh fruit sundays and ice cream. We also have live entertainment on the weekend, as well as log furniture for our customers to sit down, have a bite to eat and enjoy the entertainment.

Many people think of farms and their minds go straight to corn mazes and fall activities. Do you have a lot of summer fun on the farm?

PS: No, we just work every day at the farm.

Our summer fun is to watch the smiles on our customers’ faces and to interact with them.

That’s what makes it so rewarding—when the customers are happy, smiling, talking, laughing, giggling and having a good time. It’s something that we have been able to provide them with.

Over the years, are there any standout memories?

PS: The things that make you laugh are always the things that are screw-ups or goof ups. Even when we’ve had weather catastrophes and we all have to work together as a family and some friends have to come down to help us in our boots and our shovels, [those] are the fun things.

Between the farm, the market and the Weekend Eatery it sounds like you are always busy. Do you ever get to relax?

The Help & The Hands By: Jessica Burkhart Close your eyes and the music conjures up images of gypsy dancers twirling their brightly colored skirts around a campfire. A band plays, the sweet sounds of their instruments entrancing you, while the singer’s storytelling makes you stop and listen carefully. This timeless sound of vintage travelers is what makes up the Akron-based band, The Help & The Hands.

“I feel like [the music] touches on things everyone knows,” says Christine Petersilge, the band’s cellist. “You don’t hear our kind of sound every day.” akronlife recently had the chance to sit down with Petersilge and the band’s guitarist and lead vocalist, Brian Feltner.

The original band began as a duo called The Help, which included Feltner and Steve Bennett, who plays horn and saw. Bennett uses a cello or violin bow on the saw to create an otherworldly, haunting sound.

Catherine, Petersilge’s sister and the band’s violinist/fiddle player, introduced Feltner and Petersilge, turning the band into the four-piece The Help & The Hands. “[Our band] could be compared to Gogol Bordello or Tom Waits,” says Feltner, stating that the band’s sound is influenced by Eastern European sound, as well as having American roots. When attending one of their shows, audience members can expect lively performers that Feltner proudly describes as “foot-stomping, spooky gypsies.”

“We pull from many musical traditions. You hear cello and violin together, but it is a rich sound you don’t hear a lot,” says Petersilge. Both she and Feltner say that their favorite song is “Gypsy Fish,” which is based around an old Russian folk song, “Dark Eyes.” Feltner’s love of languages has inspired the music.

The group finds the storytelling aspect of the music vital to its performance. “We like to have a narrative to our shows and [sometimes we] bring in people to anchor the sound. For the outdoor amphitheatre, we really wanted to get people off their seats and moving,” says Petersilge.

The Help & The Hands will be releasing their first full-length album in the fall of 2015 and will be performing on July 4th at Old 97 Café in Akron.

“Sometimes I think a sweet is a comforting thing that is linked to a memory,” says Barb Talevich, the owner of West Side Bakery.

Located in both Akron and Green, this bakery café has been making memories sweeter for the last 20 years. From basic cookies and cakes, to breakfast pastries and scones, each of these delicious offerings are created on site by hands that carefully mold each into its final shape.

The cakes themselves are showstoppers.

Talevich says that many customers come into the bakery for an entirely different reason, but can’t help checking out the detailed cakes. “They’ll stop at the cakes because it is the first thing you see and they’ll say, ‘Oh my gosh, look at this one!’ or, ‘Oh, that’s so pretty,’” says Talevich. Though they don’t need a cake, they can’t help but admire the craftsmanship behind them. “That’s a fabulous compliment to get from your customers,” says Talevich proudly.

Many celebrations just wouldn’t feel right without the perfect cake—especially weddings. West Side Bakery has created some amazing wedding cakes over the years, but one that stands out to Talevich is a cake that matched a bride’s dress. “When I delivered the cake, she happened to be there and today I remember that feeling. She was so excited and happy and jumping up and down and hugging me. She kept saying how wonderful it was,” she says. “To make somebody that happy makes all of that hard work worth it.”

Despite primarily being a place to satisfy sweet cravings, the bakery has a healthy side too. Their lunch program features grab-andgo meals that are all made in house. “People are changing the way they eat. Everyone wants to eat healthier. Akron Children's Holiday Tree Festival Christmas is a magical time of the year and Akron Children’s Hospital makes it even more magnificent with their annual Holiday Tree Festival. Starting the Friday before Thanksgiving until the following Sunday, this nine-day tree decorating festival transforms the John S. Knight Center into a Christmas wonderland and a place for new memories to be made each year. Most importantly, the festival also helps patients of Akron Children’s Hospital.

“It’s a wonderful time to build memories with families,” says Vicki Parisi, the director of volunteer and visitor services at Akron Children’s Hospital. “It’s a free event and it’s just a real honor to work with all the volunteers. [They] really work their hearts out to make sure it’s a beautiful event for the community.”

Parisi has participated in the Tree Festival since its beginning 34 years ago, and says that through the years they’ve raised $4.7 million.

“Last year was our largest donation to the hospital, which was $300,000; that was a record,” she says.

The donations are used to help patients with education, research and medical care, as well as funding many special programs that improve the patient experience.

Although some of the donations come from tree donators and sponsors, most of the money comes from the opening-night gala, as well as the purchase of trees. “We also have a beautiful silent auction the night of the gala and that’s a beautiful table that’s set up with different items for everyone to purchase,” says Parisi.

The silent auction includes a trip to a condo in St. Augustine, a trip to the Peek n’ Peak Resort, jewelry, flowers, Cavs tickets and more.

Throughout the duration of the festival, the John S. Knight Center is filled with families decorating over 400 trees and wreaths, and many holiday gifts. The hospital has over 1,200 volunteers that pull off this huge undertaking.

“It’s very much a tradition for people and a lot of families do it every year,” says Parisi. “The hospital appreciates their volunteers because they take so much time to pull off this wonderful event.”

Angel Falls Coffee Company A mug of coffee can be a lot of different things to different people. It can be the thing that helps you start a particularly rough Monday, the hot mug that you fiddle with during that really exciting first date or the reason to catch up with the old friends you haven’t seen in years. No matter what the reason, people gather in Highland Square at Angel Falls Coffee Company for that warm cup of joe.

The comfortable space invites you to slouch down into an armchair, sip your delicious caffeinated beverage and chat. Jim King and Rafael Oletta started Angel Falls in 1996 and have been staples of the community ever since. The name is a callback to Oletta’s home country of Venezuela. “It was named after the world’s tallest waterfall in Venezuela and we purposely became a Venezuelan coffee house,” says King.

Though they originally sold Venezuelan coffee, it has not been available for about a decade.

Their namesake is an amazingly tall waterfall— about 3,200 feet tall—that is secluded from the rest of the world.

Just as they were inspired to name their company after one of nature’s wonders, the two men feel strongly about producing an environmentally friendly product. “It is a big thing that anything we do in coffee is from a place that cares about the environment, the sustainability of that environment. In fact we’re completely changing our line into organics,” says Oletta.

Currently, King says that they are about 80 percent organic. However in the next few months they will be 100 percent organic.

Their coffee is also roasted in house. “We roast ourselves and we’ve been roasting for the past 14 years,” says Oletta. Locally roasted coffee is rare according to King. “That’s an important part that a lot of people don’t realize. We roast our coffee locally and we’re one of the very few roasters around.”

Angel Falls has worked to be a place where people can hang out and just sip on something delicious for many years now. “To us, the most important thing is to provide a great product, a consistent product and as a store, we want to provide a place that’s comfortable and safe for them to be in,” says Oletta.

Page by page, stories unfold in the Learned Owl, an independent bookstore in Hudson. Kate Schlademan is the most recent owner of the store that originally opened in 1968.

Young readers visit the historic cozy building, with its three floors of books for all ages, to find the perfect adventure to carry them away. As a child, Schlademan remembers going to the Learned Owl with her mother and often hears similar recollections from shoppers. “I hear stories fairly often. I just had a woman come in yesterday and she [told me], ‘I’m just reminiscing.’ It’s really fun and the ones I enjoy the most are the people that remember coming here as children when their parents brought them,” says Schlademan. “Now they come back in as adults with their children.”

A booklover herself, Schlademan first got into the business when working at Borders.

“I was a little burnt out after [several years], so I took a break for about five years from book selling and taught English in South Korea.” When she returned, Schlademan says she found her place at the Leaned Owl. “I’m at peace when I’m surrounded by books.”

As the patrons age, they continue to enjoy a variety of books. “We have a little bit of everything,” says Schlademan. “We’re a little bit heavier in the history, biography, general fiction area, but we’re also pretty good across the board.”

Reading material is not all Schlademan provides for the community. She also aims to be a hub of intellectual activity. “We try to have local author events almost every Saturday, as well as some kid’s events.

We’re partnering with the Farmers’ Market in town and we’re going to be doing story time at the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

We also partner with the libraries in the area as well,” says Schlademan.

Though many say that bookstores are a thing of the past, Schlademan sees the store as a gathering point for those in the community. “I don’t know what the community would be at this point without the bookstore. Shop locally and give to the community.”

Since opening in 1971, the Western Reserve Cooking School has taught many to be certified chefs, better home cooks or provided a memorial date night.

Keeping the oven hot for the past 44 years has made the school one of the longest running culinary programs in the country.

The current owner of the Hudson school, Catherine St. Johns, has been cooking her whole life. Growing up with a family in California that rarely ate out, they even centered their family vacations around places where they could cook. Here in the Greater Akron Area, she teaches students all of the skills they could need in the kitchen. From how to correctly wield a knife, to creating the best sushi, St. Johns takes her students from cooking novices to amateur chefs.

“We’re a small mom and pop if you will,” she says. “We’ve got a little store front and a little kitchen shop. We’re independently owned and we do have a professional program, but what’s nice about it is that it’s part time, mostly happening on weekends and evenings.” Interested foodies can learn at the pace that works for them and can work their cooking education around their already busy lives.

Unlike fancy cooking schools you may see on TV, St. Johns says that her program shouldn’t break the bank. “You pay as you go, so it’s a lot more affordable.”

She says that her students are interested in a wide variety of classes. The pasta and sushi classes seem to always sell out along with the French breads and anything with pizza. “Usually anytime we do something around sea foods, people are very unsure about how to cook it at home.”

St. Johns says that her favorite part about working at the Western Reserve is teaching people the basics so that they can cook beyond the recipes. “I encourage the students to make my recipes, their recipes and add their own twist to things.”

Gavin Scott Spa And Salon Gavin Scott Salon and Spa owners Kristie Warner and Anne Davis like to attribute their many years of success to their inclusion in the community. Or as Warner likes to put it: “We’re both very philanthropic.”

Long before their grand opening on March 31, 2008, Gavin Scott’s tag-team ownership has been focused on charity work, especially Warner, who did a lot of non-profit work before Davis approached her to help run the salon. And to this day, they’ve donated over $250,000 to organizations around the globe, from Summit County to the Red Cross. “For a hair salon, it’s a pretty big number,” Warner says.

And the team, a 22-person staff, from senior designers to massage therapists, has their bases covered. They’ve gathered clothing for the Akron Snow Angels, cut hair for the homeless in Grace Park and even ran a “Diaper Dump,” collecting tot’s underwear for the Portage-Summit County Diaper Bank — all of which has helped land them a spot on the Salon Today Top 200 list.

Oh, and they also do hair too.

As agreed upon by its owners, Gavin Scott couldn’t operate without the camaraderie and shared artistry of the staff, who continue to see more and more clientele as the years pass (they’ve quadrupled business since 2008). For Warner, coworker bonding is a given. “Anne and I always say: we love like a family and we fight like a family.”

Hopefully there is more love than fight.

“Well, there’s been no bloodshed, yet,” Warner says, chuckling.

As far as being a multiple award-winning salon and spa, the owners of Gavin Scott turn back to their age-old philosophy of work. “Our business plan was always based on being a community-based business,” Warner notes. “And, in the end, if you give back to the community, then the community is going to give back to you.”

Keith Kennedy – 98.1 WKDD Sometimes you just need someone to talk to, listen to and share a laugh with. This can be difficult when your morning commute leaves you alone in a car, stuck in traffic with just your road rage for company.

Without the help of an imaginary friend, many people find a little sane interaction through morning radio shows.

Keith Kennedy chats with people from all over The 330 every morning over the airwaves. “We’ll get them to work with a smile or a chuckle,” says Kennedy. Along with his two co-hosts, Tony McGinty and Meg White, Kennedy takes his listeners from point A to point B with a smile on their face.

Originally from Orrville, Kennedy has been working in radio since his teens. “I had my first full time job when I was 16, which made me the only senior at Orrville High School with full health benefits,” says Kennedy. He has made the Greater Akron Area his home since 1998, when he started at 98.1 WKDD. Now, he not only does the morning show, but also has a position with iHeartRadio overseeing 48 radio stations and nine different markets as the Senior VP of Programming.

As we are all crawling out of bed, Kennedy is already starting his workday. “There’s something that’s always magical about getting up early in the morning and getting stuff done while most people aren’t even out of bed,” says Kennedy.

With each phone call and joke, he helps commuters shake off the yawns and get geared up for the day ahead of them.

Though the callers can be unpredictable, Kennedy loves that they share so much about themselves. “We’re a friend to somebody and their companion in the car while they’re driving to work, so they seem pretty willing to be open with us and they share anything.” Questions about work, home, spouses, and just about anything else all spark hilarious stories—the kind typically reserved for close friends. “That’s why radio is cool, because it’s such a one-on-one medium, and I get to feel we’re friends— and we are—and they’re family too. You never know what you’re going to get when you answer the call.”

The Bomb Shelter

Once you enter the Bomb Shelter store on Bank Street in Akron, you’ll think you’ve gone back in time. With merchandise dating back to the early 1900s, it’s easy to think that you’re in another time and place, and for some, it’s a place to relive old memories.

Most of the merchandise is bought and sold locally throughout the Akron area. People from all over The 330 sell their old and unwanted items to the store, which are bought and made anew into someone else’s treasure.

Since 2011 the Bomb Shelter, known as Akron’s retro superstore, has saved things that normally would be put on the curb. Kevin Royer, the founder and owner, says that the store was founded because they “like things to find a new home.”

In addition to the kitchen, clothing and furniture sections, the Bomb Shelter also has library, camping and industrial sections to satisfy a wide variety of wants and needs.

Furniture, cookware and clothing have been restored and sold by their team, giving people unique items to take home that wouldn’t be found anywhere else. Royer says that the antique shop is an alternative to big name stores with big name prices.

“It used to be that it had to be a Hermon Miller [item] or some famous designer to be worthy of purchasing,” he says. “Now people are buying if it fits into their lifestyle, they can use it and enjoy it.”

“I think we tend to hit a pretty good range of what the customers are interested in within this area,” Royer says. “It may be some of the same items that you see at a garage sale or on Craigslist, but when it’s in the store and staged, the items that we bring in feel like they can have a home somewhere else. They don’t feel like they’re sitting on a dusty table at a garage sale. We love making old things new.”

A hand-crafted home

/ Doug Wirt has built not just the log cabin he calls home, but also unique furniture /

There truly is no place like your home.

Each of us has our own unique style, which comes out in our homes to various degrees. For Doug Wirt, home is a log cabin that he built outside of Ravenna.

Inspired by the cozy comfort of cabins he had seen when traveling, Wirt set about building his dream home in 1991. Resting on five acres of land, the 1,864–square-foot cabin has a full basement, four bedrooms, a loft and a high-pitched roof that dramatically opens up the space. “[The house itself ] has a pretty basic design, but it has a high-pitched roof so that, when you walk in, it’s very open. That’s what I wanted. I wanted roominess,” says Wirt.

Originally from Northeast Ohio, Wirt left home and worked on a farm in Michigan as a young man.

With a chuckle, he recounts memories of hard work that established a work ethic that he carries forward today. “It was a great education for me, with a lot of long hours,” says Wirt. He returned to the Akron area to help with his father’s business and later, run it. Currently, Wirt is the owner of Mascon Equipment. Combining the work ethic he learned on the farm and his construction background from his business, Wirt decided to design 54

and build his own home. “It got to a point where I was renting, and I started looking for property. I have drafting skills and I said “I can design a house.” So I spent a year and a half researching — I’m in the construction field so I had a lot of contractors that I asked a lot of questions.”

Step by step Wirt began planning his home.

He reached out to a company in Montana for the logs. “I did all of the designs and then sent those plans to a company, like an

architect, and they go to a mill that mills the logs,” says Wirt. Once the plans were ready to go, the supplies were sent to Wirt and he began the construction of the cabin.

Utilities were contracted out, but the main bulk of the construction was completed by Wirt himself. It took about three years for the majority of the work to be completed.

The hard work was worth it for Wirt who still loves his home years later. “Sitting in a log house with the fire burning, you

can’t ask for a more comfortable esthetic setting.”

The cabin is not the only thing that Wirt has hand-crafted. He also designs beautifully unique pieces of furniture out of a wood called twisted juniper. This artistic pursuit is one that began while on his honeymoon with his wife, local singer Helen Welch, in Michigan. On their way home, the couple stumbled upon a piece of practical art. “We were passing a place and it had all of this wooden stuff sitting out along the road. We pulled in and there was a guy making this furniture using this type of wood.” With the addition of one very unique dinning table, Wirt and his wife returned home, where he began to utilize the twisted pieces of juniper in furniture creations.

His side business, called Twisted Wood Designs, is still in its infancy. Each piece of what he calls practical art, takes it’s own shape. Wirt’s process for each creation begins with an idea of what he wants to build. “It involves a lot of wine, my stool in the basement, and an idea—if I want to come up with a table or a chair, I need an objective to start with. Then I just start laying all this wood out and start talking to it, looking at it, laying it down, turning it around and putting it upside down. Whatever you can do to start getting a plan to put it together,” says Wirt.

Each whimsical piece is more than just an expression of an artistic idea. It serves a real purpose within Wirt’s home and the homes of those who purchase the pieces.

“I like the idea of functional art. I like painting things, but I like when people can feel, touch, sit in, walk around a piece of art,” says Wirt.

Together, his home and the functional art within it create a place that is truly home to him. “A house should make a statement about yourself. That’s the one thing I have strived for. People think that a big house is making a statement—I think it’s more your living space than what you’re trying to show off to the neighbors.”

You may be reading this and thinking, “No no no! It is way too early to be discussing a holiday budget.” However, this is just the time to start planning for all of your holiday expenses.

Lee Hyder is a financial wealth coach.

As the founder of Lee Hyder and Associates, he has helped people in the Akron area make a plan for all kinds of events in their lives. He says that education is the key to success for his clients. “We start our relationship off with an educational program, teaching people all about money investments, the market, emotions,” says Hyder. Talking about your emotions may seem like a stretch when it comes to managing your money, but Hyder says that emotional spending can be a challenge during the holiday season.

“People always get in trouble at Christmas,” says Hyder. “The biggest problem that people have when it comes to the holidays is that they really don’t have a plan. Without a plan, they’re 100 percent going to make their Christmas decisions on emotion. You get that unexpected gift from somebody that you haven’t even thought about and now, emotionally, you feel obligated to step up and respond.”

This obligation to match gifts can be a big problem and can derail your financial plan. To stay on track, Hyder has several tips he suggests people follow for their holiday financial plan.

Make a list and check it twice First they make a few lists. “I encourage my clients to make two lists. First would be a Christmas card list.” This list is for those friends and family that you plan to send a Christmas card to. These are mainly the people that you want to reach out to over the holiday season, but aren’t close enough to give a gift to. The second list is the gift list. “The people on the gift list will also be on the card list, but these are the people we’ve made a mental commitment that the relationship, for one reason or another, is worthy of a gift,” says Hyder. july 2015

Deck the halls, on a budget Next, it’s time to set up a budget. Hyder says it is important to make a mental commitment that you will stick within the budget. Once you are looking at your budget, think about how much you want to spend on each of your loved ones. “We need to determine, ‘Is my gift list for everybody from a spouse to my grandchildren $1,000, $1,500 or $500?’”

Do you try to spend the exact same amount on each child, sibling, cousin or parent in your family? In the pursuit of fairness, many people like to set a particular amount aside for groupings of loved ones. Hyder encourages this. “What I’m going to do is take my gift list and create people who are going to receive a gift and break it down to A, B and C people.” These three tiers allow you to separate the people on your gift list by price of the gift you plan to give them.

After dividing up your list into A, B and C people, determine just how much to spend.

“I’m going take the total amount of my budgetary gifts and divide it by the number of people that are on my gift list. Then I will come up with an average number per person, if I did an equal distribution. We all

know that not everyone on your list is necessarily in your mind an A, but you want to do something for them,” says Hyder.

The Christmas club Once you have a budget established and your list is split into groups, it is time to think about how you plan to save for all of this spending. Hyder recommends placing your money in a specific place. Instead of just putting all of your spending on a credit card and planning to pay it off when it comes, slowly save for the excess spending. “So if I decide to spend $1,200 for Christmas, I’m going to open up a new account and I’m going to very consciously put $100 in that account a month.”

A Christmas club account doesn’t need to be exclusive to the holidays. Instead it is just a specific account where you set aside your money for a tailored purpose. “It could be a vacation club and you’re just putting money in it when you get you’re statement from the bank. You can instruct the bank to register that account any way you want,” says Hyder. The important part is that you are intentionally planning for future spending.

Planning ahead is a good thing. Many aspects of our lives should be planned according to Hyder. “Christmas is a planned event; giving gifts is a planned event. The only thing that is not planned is what you’re going to give, how much and to whom.” By setting aside the funds in advance, the goal is to help alleviate some of the stress that walks hand in hand with the holiday season. “We’re telling you right now how many cards you have to buy because you have a Christmas card list. It’s not just looking at each other over the kitchen table in November and saying, ‘Oh shoot, we got a card from John and Betty. I guess now we have to send one to them.’ It’s the same thing with a gift; figuring out who in your life is important enough to you that you want to give them a gift not simply as a reciprocity issue,” says Hyder.

Gift giving needs to stem from a solid financial plan, not from guilt. “If someone wants to give you a gift and you haven’t spoken to them in five years, that’s nice. But the truth is if you would not even have sent them a card this year, why do you feel the overwhelming sense to do something financially just because they did it to you?”

Hyder compares this advice to a speedbump.

“We just want them not to drive 50 miles an hour because that’s the speed limit, we want them to hit a speedbump every so often for us to say, hey there are things we need to think about.” Before you know it, the mistletoe will be hung, lights twinkling and the gifts will be beautifully wrapped. So set down your glass of Christmas Ale, pick up your calculator and prep your plan for the holidays.

Making a plan for the future There are a few key talks throughout life that are difficult to sit down and have. Just hearing the phrase “the talk,” induces anxiety into many. However, Jesse Hurst II, CFP, from the Millennial Group works to make his clients talk through the touchy topics.

Specializing in providing financial and retirement planning services, Hurst is all about planning for the future. “I help people plan for what they really want to do to successfully retire. I help people fund their charitable goals and dreams. I help people educate their kids and grandkids,” says Hurst. “I get to help nice people do the things that are really important to them, so I really love my job.”

Part of planning for the future is discussing what your wishes are to your family. “If I have a client that tells me that they have an aging [parent] that’s starting to struggle with either the medical or the cognitive side and they aren’t sure what to do, I ask questions like: how many siblings they have, who would be involved in the day-today care, would you expect mom and dad to go to a facility, who has power of attorney, is the same person who has health care power of attorney the same person who has financial power of attorney?” Each of these questions will directly affect the client, Hurst says. Without proper planning, the children of an ailing parent could end up in court trying to be appointed guardian instead of spending valuable time with their family.

Hurst works to avoid this struggle by talking through the plan with both parents and the children that will be entrusted with carrying

out their parents’ wishes.

“One of the big issues in all of this is not just making a plan, but making sure the plan is communicated,” says Hurst.

“A parent might name a child as their power of attorney to make legal or health or financial choices for them, but they’ve never even talked to the child about what their wishes are.” The child has been granted the power to do what needs to be done, but might now be sure what their parents wished to be done. Providing guidance to these empowered children also provides peace of mind, Hurst says.

By sitting down all together this plan can be developed, and explained in full detail. “We’ll do family meetings with clients. I had a couple that at about age 80, had their daughter and son-in-law in from Chicago and son and daughter-in-law in from Columbus. They asked us to sit down with the entire family and say look, ‘Here’s the financial assets we have; here’s how the estate documents are set; here’s who would play what role; here’s what mom and dad have put together and here’s why they put it together that way; and here’s what their wishes and goals are for their estate,” says Hurst.

Having this conversation can be difficult, but it is worth it to ensure peace of mind for everyone involved.

An aged beauty Castello Banfi - Montalcino, Italy High on a hilltop in the medieval town of Montalcino sits Castello Banfi.

Resting in the southern foothills of Tuscany – within 70 miles of Florence – the area is known for their Brunello di Montalcino wines. Brunello means “the little dark one.”

The Sangiovese grape is grown throughout Tuscany and the grape clone is used to make outstanding Chianti. The wines of Castello Banfi, as they say at the winery, are “a range of careful selections of grapes from their best vineyards in Montalcino.” Castello Banfi‘s winemaking expertise is demonstrated in three estate-bottled Tuscan Reds. These three estate-bottled wines are wisely handcrafted and are very limited in quantities so as to produce outstanding wines. I must also point out that Castello Banfi is the #1 winery in the world that is recognized for exceptional environmental, social and ethical responsibility, and leadership in customer service. Castello Banfi was also awarded the Winery of the Year in Europe by the 2015 Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition.

Summus 2011 Toscana Red is an extraordinary blend of 40 percent Sangiovese, 35 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 25 percent Syrah. This wine is aged in French oak barrels for one year. After aging for a year, they are then blended and continue to age for an additional eight to 10 months in the barrel. The wine is then aged again for

another six months in the bottle before reaching the market. The result is a rich, complex wine with soft fruit flavors that pair very well with red meat dishes and aged cheeses. This wine retails for $72.99.

Cum Laude 2009 Toscana Red is a blend of 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 percent Merlot, 25 percent Sangiovese and 15 percent Syrah. After fermentation, the wines are separately racked into French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine ages for six months. Then the wine is blended into a cuvee and aged another six months in the barrels. After the wine ages and is bottled, it ages again for another six months before heading to the market. The result is a rich, complex, powerful wine that is well-structured with remarkable fruit and tannins. It pairs very well with grilled meats and medium-aged cheese. This wine retails for $39.99.

Belnero 2010 Toscana is a wine that is almost all Sangiovese and according to the winery, it is“aged for a very long time in the French oak barrels.” They say that the winemaker determines how long the wine will age in the barrels before being bottled. “Belnero is a wine that celebrates the experience, the passion and the 30 years of commitment to quality that Banfi has incessantly been dedicated to in its pursuit of excellence in the vineyard and in the winery.” This wine retails for $29.99.

Bringing back a taste of the past, one sip at a time Norka Craft Soda Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It brings back memories of days gone by and binds them tightly to feelings we had forgotten we once felt. Sometimes this is triggered with the slightest of prompting. A smell, a taste, a sound. Each of these senses takes that link between a memory and an emotion and builds on the connection.

The Norka Food and Beverage LLC. thrives on nostalgia. Founder and president Michael Considine revived this craft soda after seeing the logo on a mural. “I was with my dad down at the Akron RubberDucks restaurant at the game and behind him was this vintage mural with Firestone Country Club up there, the Soap Box Derby, Portage Trail images, but also a Norka Beverage image. He remembered the Norka orange drink from his childhood,” says Considine.

The younger Considine had been in the beverage business for several years and witnessed the growth of craft soda. “It wasn’t something that I was planning to do, but it was a great opportunity in the beverage world, especially given that this is my hometown and [there’s] a lot of pride behind Akron.”

Norka originally started in Akron as an alternative beverage choice.

“Prohibition in the ‘20s shut down a lot of the breweries from making beer and other alcoholic products, [which] opened the door for those same facilities to make sparkling beverages, mixers and the whole soda world saw a big increase,” says Considine.

This increase in the popularity of pop propelled Norka throughout several decades in the area. However, the soda company faded away in 1962. Considine did his homework and was surprised to find that the trademarks were available for the soda. From that point, he began this journey to bring Norka back to Akron.

The original bottles were phenomenally designed says Considine.

However there was one odd thing about them—the labels didn’t call out the flavors. “I think the only way you would know was just by red liquid, orange liquid or amber. They did have a green bottle that was for the ginger ale. We’ve called out flavors.” Now, there’s absolutely no mistaking the four flavors —orange, root beer, cherrystrawberry and ginger ale.

Though Considine didn’t have the original formula for each flavor, he knew what the flavors were. “All we had were the original flavor profiles. What is tough in today’s day and age is really making a healthier version of what they were probably doing in 1924. For us, [that involves using] cane sugar and natural flavors. We’ve engineered a better drink for today.”

Many focus groups sipped on test flavors before it hit the shelves at the beginning of 2015. Since then, Norka has been gaining momentum in both its hometown and beyond. “You have to have a

good product to make it. For this [soda] to have legs outside of Akron, we’ve got to have a great product,” says Considine. That commitment to creating a great product is what he says took the longest. “For us, it was big to be caffeine-free, use pure cane sugar, have 100-percent natural flavors go into it, with low-sodium attributes, and gluten-free attributes that customers will pick up and try because you have a healthier soda in front of them. However you also have to have a great tasting product. So [there were] a lot of rounds of focus groups and trying to get the exact flavor and profile right on all four.”

As Norka continues to grow, it solidifies the bond between the past and the present. For many, the memories of days gone by make purchasing a bottle of the new soda a no brainer. “I think you have a group that remembers it, but then you have a whole other generation that we’re introducing it to,” says Considine. w w w. akronlife.com

Food to Live By The Mustard Seed Market & Café opens its doors to Highland Square If we are what we eat, the Mustard Seed Market and Café is the healthiest person around. The Mustard Seed is more than just a grocery store; it is a place where shoppers think about their diets. Providing fresh food options, the market has filled a longtime void in Highland Square.

The newest of three stores, the Highland Square location celebrated its opening day on May 16. Gabe Nabors and his brother Abe are the second generation to run the market, which their mother founded in 1981. The health foods store continues to focus on education and provides what Nabors calls “fast casual food.” “There are a lot of different options for you to get healthy, nutritious food really fast and then have a spot to eat it and be able to hang out.”

One spot to hang out in the new Highland Square store is the café. Featuring seating for

150 diners inside, a lounge, a fireplace, their business bar — full of outlets for the busy businessman or woman to work and dine — and an outside patio. “The outside patio is definitely one of the highlights. It has three different couch lounge areas, it seats about 100 and [the patio] wraps all the way around the front half of the building on The Market side.”

Unlike their larger Montrose location, the newest Mustard Seed is compacted into its Highland Square space.”We had to figure out where we could give and take on certain areas. [One] of the areas where we had to give up a little bit was the meat department,” says Nabors. Within the new store, the meat department is condensed, taking more of a self-serve feel than what is offered in other locations.

When discussing a health-food-specific grocery store, it is important to talk about the food itself. If you have any questions about what you are purchasing, the staff will have the answers ready for you. “We have them go over what the definition of what organic is and glutenfree labels and we go through all of the processes and all of the qualifications on how we identify our food,” says Nabors.

Training each staff member to be knowledgeable about every section of the market is a challenge, but it is one that they believe is best for their customers. “We know that we need to educate the customer about why our products are different. That is the most important thing.

They need to know how we handle our food. They need to know that all of our fruits and vegetables in the entire store get washed before they hit their plate.”

Needless to say, it is good for you to eat healthy foods. Nabors says that when you make the change in your diet, you feel it. “Most people eat for flavor when they need to be eating for nutrition. People are surprised to hear that we don’t abide by a certain diet; no, we’re not vegan.

No, we’re not Paleo. As long as we take our supplements, eat our fruits and vegetables and exercise, we can cheat every once in a while,” says Nabors.

Changing up your diet, adding in fresh nutritious foods, can improve your life in many ways. However this doesn’t happen overnight. “You have to identify a couple of things and you have to make a change,” says Nabors. “I don’t expect anyone to go from eating McDonald’s everyday to eating vegan home-cooked meals. [However,] once you understand what you can do, the most important thing is how [the food] makes you feel.”

Blueberry Hill, Blueberry Salsa Ingredients 2 pints Blueberry Hill blueberries 1 red bell pepper, diced ¼ red onion, minced 1 lime, seeded and squeezed 1/3 cup fresh cilantro 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 1 tsp sea salt 1/8 tsp black pepper * For optimal health, we recommend the use of organic ingredients

Procedure 1. Coarsely chop one of the pints of blueberries.

2. Mince red onion. Seed and chop jalapenos. Chop cilantro.

3. Combine chopped and whole blueberries with all other ingredients.
