A few years ago, a woman I know and had so much respect for died too young of cancer. There. I said it. Now you know my secret.

I’m half Italian, but as (bad) luck would have it, I inherited my dad’s Serbian/Slovak coloring (read: pasty, as in, not porcelain but a “you look like you’ve got the flu”-type complexion, rather than my mom’s olive “I look healthy even when I’ve got the flu”-type complexion).

So, in high school, I started tanning. Yes. I faked and baked.

There. I said it.

I know. I know. And believe me. My mom lectured me plenty about it through the years — and every time, I found myself distracted by her olive complexion.

(Darn you Dad!) After one too many lectures, I promised Mom I’d stop with the tanning beds.

(Darn Italian guilt!) Right around this time, my husband and I were getting ready to head to Costa Rica. And we needed some color. Seriously.

Enter: spray tans.

We tried a Mystic spray tan booth and, if I do say so myself, we looked pretty good.

Like the picture of health.

Until …

Did you know spray tans wash off in salt water?

There. I said it.

(I know. We’re morons.) For the remainder of our trip, the splotchy patches all over both of us kept strangers at bay. It’s funny now. Sure.

I haven’t really tanned much since then, spray or otherwise. And I look terrible, as I’m constantly reminded by even my mother who often asks, “Are you feeling OK?” (Darn you Mom … and Dad!) Enter: Best Of Akron.

/ Since when, exactly, did it become trendy for (Midwestern) men to remove all body hair outside of the head zone? /

>> I just attended my 30th college reunion where, within

five minutes, our conversation turned to body hair, or rather, the lack of it on both genders. We all in live in different parts of the country, but had separately noted that body hair of any kind outside the head zone is a fashion faux pas. A hairy head is just fine; hairy legs are so last decade for men (and, of course, so last century for women). Even hair in areas where the sun doesn’t shine is completely unacceptable to the hip.

There’s even a term for the male habit of removing body hair — manscaping.

If you really, truly want the answer to that — and I’m not sure you do — just Google “body hair,” “shaving” and “trends.” Not only will you get history, science, strong opinions and TMI, you’ll get mountains of advertising for new shaving products, particularly for men, such as the Phillips Norelco BodyGroomer and the Gillette bodycruZer.

Jim Ryan, a 22-year-old roofer from East Akron, told me he started shaving his body when he played high school football because his hair got stuck in the pads. He began shaving his underarms, too, because it helped him from stinking as much after practice. “It’s just neater and cleaner,” he says. (Ryan also expects any woman he dates to shave completely from the neck down. In fact, he said he doesn’t 14

know any woman under 30 who doesn’t shave completely or nearly so — something my 21year-old daughter assured me was indeed true.)

Where’s this coming from? A true personal preference aside, there’s an argument to be made that the trend is primarily advertising driven.

The women’s beauty-care market stalled with the recession, but the men’s didn’t. Packaged Facts, a report by an East Coast consumer research firm, gushed to its clients in late 2009 that “there’s never been a better time” to get into the men’s grooming market. Valued at $19.7 billion worldwide in 2009, male-specific grooming products will mushroom to $28 billion by 2014. “And one must not forget that men also use grooming products that are non-male-specific — which raises the total value of male consumption to a colossal $61.3 billion in 2009, with $84.9 billion expected within five years,” reports Packaged Facts. july 2011

I first noticed this trend a few years ago when I had the unfortunate occasion to share a bathroom in Los Angeles with a young man not related to me by marriage or genetics. I didn’t like this set-up at all. First, it was just plain weird; secondly, and more importantly, he hogged the bathroom.

I finally had the courage to ask this 20-something what he was doing in there all that time.

“I’m shaving my body,” he said with a tone that suggested he thought me a complete idiot.

I glanced down at his legs — exposed thanks to cargo shorts — and indeed they were better shaved than mine. Slick, shiny and completely bare, those legs called to me. I reached out instinctively to touch them, which probably — no, definitely — was inappropriate. He probably — no, definitely — cringed at having some unfamiliar, middle-aged woman stroking his shins.

This particular young man was an aspiring film actor and had a boyfriend, so I shrugged it off as a Hollywood or gay thing and returned to Akron to share a bathroom far more comfortably with my hirsute husband.

But now, as I look around at men jogging sans shirt, I notice the trend is firmly entrenched in Akron.

Sigh.

Until you can convince me that a hairless man is more aerodynamic while doing housework, I feel confident in speaking for a lot of women out there when I say: We want our bathrooms back.

>> If you stand too close to Mary Myers in an elevator, don’t be surprised if she immediately exits the car.

You just broke an unwritten rule — and could be a serial killer.

A psychologist and retired Akron Police captain, Myers is one of about 120 recognized “police psychologists” in the United States. She was the detective supervisor of Akron’s homicide squad in 1997 when Brett Hartmann killed Winda Snipes, and she served on the team that investigated the 1997 murder of Akron physician Dr. Margo Prade by her former husband, Akron police officer Capt. Douglas Prade.

As assistant professor of criminal justice at The University of Akron, Myers has been teaching a course on “Profiling Serial Killers” since it was added to the curriculum in 2003 — a class that’s filled every semester with criminal justice majors, as well as those who are fascinated by the topic.

“What I’m teaching the students is intuitive guessing based on research,” she says.

“It’s something they’ll be able to use in a wide variety of settings. Financial investors use intuitive guessing based on financial research. Retailers do the same.”

Working with the university, Myers developed two certificates any student can obtain, not just those working on formal degrees: a Forensic Study of Behavior Certificate and a Forensic Psychology Certificate.

Myers says her goal is to help students recognize the personality disorders of serial killers so they can avoid becoming a victim: “It’s such a wake-up call when they realize these killers are our next-door neighbors or that charming person sitting next to them at the bar.”

As a child, I wanted to grow up and be …

MM: A nun. Until I learned to appreciate the boys, that is. I was such a sweet, innocent and naïve young child. I certainly never wanted to study serial killers!

How did you choose this career path?

MM: I took Self Defense for Women at The University of Akron when I was 20. I learned to kick butt and take names later. That training served me well because the instructors later recruited me to join the Akron Police Department, something I never would have thought of doing. I originally earned bachelor’s degrees with the intention of teaching Spanish and French. But on that first day in the classroom, when I wrote ‘Señorita Myers’ on the board, I thought, ‘I’ve spent the last 18 years locked in a classroom, and I don’t want to be locked in here anymore!’ I joined the Akron Police Department the following year.

So you spent a year teaching. How different, really, is the mind of a middle-school student and a serial killer?

MM: The minds of serial killers are very much like those of middle-school students in some ways. They want what they want when they want it, and they don’t care who’s hurt while they’re getting it. Sigmund Freud would say that their ‘id’ is in control; their basic desire is to meet their own primal needs. There are even a few teams of serial killers who form ‘cliques,’ much like the cliques that form in our classrooms.

What trait do all serial killers have in common?

MM: They’re sociopaths who have no need to follow the rules of our society. They’re lacking the ability to control their impulses to kill. To protect myself, I increase my awareness whenever I encounter someone who doesn’t follow these tiny, unwritten ‘rules’ that govern our everyday behavior in our society. For example, if someone enters the elevator and stands too close to me, I simply exit the elevator. They’ve broken the unwritten rule of where one is supposed to stand in the elevator. I don’t want to give anyone the opportunity to attack me. I try to display clear body language to indicate that I wouldn’t be an easy victim.

You’ve been around a lot of disturbing things during your career. How do you shake it off at the end of the day and lead a “normal” existence — especially when you’ve seen evil up close?

MM: Sometimes I feel just awful inside after teaching about and researching these killers.

To teach this topic well, I have to place myself into their brains and psyches to figure out why I would have done such awful things if I were them. It’s so disturbing when I understand how someone could eat a child’s parts or mutilate some poor woman’s body to take souvenirs. When I’m finished for the day, I leave that stuff behind. I have to regroup and re-gather my own loving and caring psyche. I love to go out in my garden after teaching and pull weeds or pick herbs and vegetables for dinner; it literally brings me back to earth.

Do you ever worry about your safety when criminals are released from prison?

MM: I worry for the safety of myself and my family. I’ve arrested so many people I don’t even remember them — but they remember me. Women still comprise less than 11 percent of our police forces, and the criminals remember when a woman arrests them. I’m also a little nervous on the first day of every new semester when I begin teaching another course in Serial Profiling. I always ask myself: ‘Who would be interested in taking such a course? Do I have any actual or prospective serial killers sitting so neatly in those rows in front of me?’ I look around the room and read the students’ behaviors as I begin.

You’ve had a lot of really interesting jobs — from police captain to crisis negotiator to licensed psychologist. What’s been your favorite?

MM: My favorite ‘career’ is that of being a mother; I began this new career when I was

53 years old by adopting an older child, as a single parent. I’ve had my fun and excitement in life, and now I can share those experiences as I help this beautiful child.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?

MM: Of course, I’m proud of my personal accomplishments — of my success as a police captain and detective, of earning my license as a psychologist and counselor, of learning Spanish and studying French, Italian, Latin and American Sign Language, of talking so many people out of committing suicide on our bridges, of becoming a professor and attaining tenure here at The University of Akron, and of having touched the lives of so many people I’ll never know. But my own greatest satisfaction comes from the fact that I successfully cared for my elderly mother until she passed away this year. I was able to keep her in the home in which she had lived since 1956. I was able to ‘pay back’ a few of those years of care she gave me. It’s a wonderful feeling to know I was able to do that for her.

What would surprise people about you?

MM: That I’d love to find a loving, caring partner. I’ve been single all my life, and as a result, I’m such a strongly independent woman that most don’t see that desire in me.

I’d love to find a good man who’d also be willing to be a good father figure.

In my spare time, I’d like to …

MM: Find that man! Write a book! And help all the police officers who are so deeply affected when they have to use deadly force; it truly takes a hidden toll on them.

What serial killer case would be your dream assignment?

MM: Anthony Sowell isn’t yet a convicted serial killer, but I’d love to get inside his brain and figure out where the rest of the bodies could be. I believe these killings in his home in Cleveland aren’t the only ones he’s committed. More than 300 people attended Viva La Flavor, the 11th annual Men Who Cook event on May 13 at the St. Joseph Family Center in Akron. This Summa Health System fundraiser showcases the talent of local amateur chefs — from Summa physicians and business leaders to firefighters and policemen. They prepare their best dishes for event attendees and for a panel of female judges —

This year’s Chef ’s Choice award went to Rod Myerscough, PhD, for his artisan bread, while the People’s Choice award was given to Dr. Kevin Spear and Dr. Brian Canterbury for their beef tenderloin with shallot and port reduction sauce. Dr. Joseph Zarconi won the Mixmaster award for his margaritas.

The event raised more than $66,000 for Summa’s Palliative Care and Hospice Services, which provides care to enhance the comfort and quality of life for patients with a broad range of conditions. Some of the proceeds will help the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa, providing essentials such as computers, medicines, medical supplies and bags.

Pedal with a Purpose

Pedal with a Purpose, an indoor cycling event held at the Riverfront YMCA on March 5, raised more than $6,000 — with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Partners With Youth to provide scholarship monies for qualifying families in need of support, many of whom are military families and single parents. The individuals pictured here helped make Pedal with a Purpose a success through collecting pledges for half-hour increments of cycling. Some people (including Ken Haver) pedaled the entire four hours.

Friday@5 Auction The Akron Area YMCA hosted its 16th Annual Friday@5 Silent & Oral Auction event, April 1, at the Portage County Club in Akron. About 120 people attended the event, which raised approximately $35,000 for the Y’s Partners With Youth Annual Giving Campaign that kicked off in March.

If These Trees Could Talk. “When an unsigned instrumental band consistently draws 100 plus, people take notice,” says Eddings. “Plus, these Highland Square guys manage to sell their music all over the world.

When ‘Friday Night Lights’ needed the exact right soundtrack song to set the mood for the series finale, they went to this band.”

The Strange Familiar. Just months after moving from Akron to L.A. in 2008, the band got some major exposure — when their music was used on the TV show, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” “It was a really lucky situation,” says vocalist Kira Leyden. “We had our music up on the Internet and had been out in L.A. a few months — and we got an e-mail from someone at ABC Family.” Eddings describes his No. 3 pick as having “charming members and quality pop songwriting.”

The latest cuttingedge procedures and non-invasive rejuvenations now available to both men and women of all ages are becoming increasingly affordable, too.

Non Invasive Face & Body Cosmetic Procedures Botox $200-$600 per treatment Gone are the days when the words Botox and frozen (as in expression) are used in the same sentence. According to Dr. James Libecco, a board-certified dermatologist at Akron Skin Care, Botox is the No. 1 cosmetic treatment for a reason.

“Botox offers patients the most bang for their buck,” he says. “The ‘wow’ factor is evident, and the cost is low.” Botox is an injectable, wrinkle-smoothing treatment commonly used on crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, smile lines and furrows between the brows. But as with anything, you can overdo it. Dr. Libecco recommends

Laser skin treatments $250-$500 per treatment a subtle look so features don’t appear frozen. “It’s ideal because patients can go right back to work.” It takes about two to five days to see results, which should last three to four months.

Microdermabrasion $75-$100 per treatment Microdermabrasion uses a “vibrating emery board” with a diamond tip that gently blasts the skin with fine sand-like crystals to smooth the upper layer of the skin through exfoliation and the promotion of collagen production. “I use microdermabrasion to even out rough skin patches, uneven pigmentation and age spots, as well as to smooth wrinkles and treat scars and acne,” says Dr. Libecco. “By removing the top layer of damaged skin, I’m actually stimulating the growth of new skin cells below, which leads to a more youthful appearance.” The 15-minute procedure may leave skin a little sensitive. For best results, you may require a series of treatments.

Chemical peels $100 per peel “Chemical peels range from mild spa-like therapies to very aggressive treatments,” says Dr. Libecco. “I prefer to use a more subtle therapy, which usually requires three treatments to see maximum results.” During a chemical peel, a glycolic acid is brushed onto the skin and remains there for three to five minutes. Patients describe a warm feeling similar to lying out in the sun. “Within two to five days, the skin will feel tight and dry, and after that, patients can expect the skin to mildly peel.” Teens with acne and patients looking to get rid of pigmentation or wrinkles can benefit from chemical peels.

Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Sculptra) $500-$3,000 Does your face look like a helium balloon that’s lost a lot of air? “Sometimes people who’ve lost a lot of weight have volume-depleted faces,” says Dr. Libecco. “Injectable fillers, like Juvederm and Restylane, give back some dimension to the hollows of the cheeks and the lower portion of the face.” Fillers are also used to “fill” in deep wrinkles around the mouth, nose and lips. Costing $500 to $1,500, depending on the amount of materials used, you can expect results to last up to one year. While not a new procedure, it is being done more frequently and can be performed alone or in conjunction with face and neck lifts.

“Face and body contour irregularities often become more dramatic with aging, and patients want facial rejuvenation procedures that offer results and less downtime for recovery,” says Dr. Quereshy. “Facial liposuction techniques are performed in a similar fashion to that of full-body cosmetic liposuction. A popular procedure among women who are done having children, it tightens the muscles of the abdomen and removes excess skin and fat. “If you don’t want a scar, then this isn’t the surgery for you,” says Dr. Michael Parker, an Akron board-certified plastic surgeon at Akron Plastic Surgeons. “Depending on how much skin we have to take off, it may require a traverse incision that

runs from hip to hip below the bikini line.”

For those not wanting or needing a full tummy tuck, a mini-lift can improve the appearance of loose skin and excess lower abdominal fat through body contouring — a combination of liposuction and skin removal. “Liposuction is a wonderful tool for contouring the abdominal area, but we limit its use during a full abdominoplasty due to a higher chance of complications,” says Dr. Parker. Recovery times vary depending on the extent

of the surgery. Patients should plan on one to two weeks of downtime and a full four to six weeks before resuming strenuous sports routines. Compression garments also need to be worn during the healing period.

Loose and hanging skin can be a problem for patients who’ve lost a significant amount of body weight. In fact, Dr. Parker sometimes sees patients who’ve lost up to half their body mass.

“Whether through diet and exercise or gastric bypass surgery, patients who have undergone a major weight loss will have a deflation of the body,” he says. “The procedure to remove significant amounts of redundant skin and fat around the abdomen and buttocks is called a circumferential body lift.

Multiple surgeries may be required, depending upon the amount of skin that needs to be removed and the area being operated on.” It can take up to two weeks to resume daily activities, depending on the extent of the surgery.

“They’re still mechanical devices and they can leak, but these problems are rare.” A typical patient in Dr. Parker’s office is a younger woman who never developed a lot of breast tissue or women who’ve lost volume in their breasts after pregnancy, nursing or weight loss. Implants are filled with either a saline solution or a silicone gel and are placed via an incision under the armpit, around the areola or in the breast crease. Another option: When gravity has caused breasts to droop and sag, a breast lift may be the answer, provided the breasts have enough volume. Soreness and pain are common complaints for a few days after the surgery.

Brachioplasty (arm lift) $6,000

Thighplasty (thigh lift) $5,000-$6,000 Excess skin and fat between the upper arm and elbow is often referred to as bat-wing deformity and can be corrected with a procedure called brachioplasty.

“Brachioplasty reshapes the upper arm by excising extra skin and giving it better contour and proportion,” says Dr. Parker. The trade off is visible scarring.

“Similarly, thighplasty is used for patients who have experienced a loss of skin elasticity and tone to the upper leg, usually after a significant weight loss.” These procedures can also improve irregularities, like dimpling, to the skin’s surface. When a patient has good tone, Dr. Parker may be able to contour the skin using liposuction alone. Compression bandages need to be worn for weeks after surgery to minimize swelling and bruising.

Butt lift $6,000-$10,000 Want more or less junk in the trunk?

“We can make butts bigger or smaller,” says Dr. Parker. “We can augment the buttocks by using a patient’s own fat and tissue to change the shape and size, or we can use solid-based implants for those wanting a lift or increase in volume.”

Recovery time for a butt lift is two to three weeks, and you’ll need to wear support garments.

Liposuction $1,500-$10,000 When diet and exercise won’t budge those bulges, liposuction may be the right choice. “Liposuction is used to reduce abnormal body fat deposits using a hollow tube (cannula) connected to a vacuum pump,” says Dr. Parker. “Performed under general anesthesia, the tube is placed under the skin via small incisions.”

A number of factors, including a patient’s physical condition, genetics, diet, activity level and skin tone can affect the results.

“Many times, liposuction is combined with other procedures to get the best result possible.” Recovery involves wearing elastic garments to help control swelling and bruising.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the intestines. Symptoms often include abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. Some individuals experience IBS because of stress. Certain foods, as well as some antibiotics, can also be the source of pain and discomfort. One of the more consistent symptoms of IBS is bouts of constipation followed by periods of diarrhea. If symptoms are severe and persistent, see your doctor, who will perform the appropriate tests or suggest you see a specialist to ensure your symptoms aren’t caused by a more serious illness such as colon cancer. Treatment options vary from changes in lifestyle and diet to medications.

Celiac Disease is a digestive disorder in which a primary treatment is eliminating food that contains gluten, a substance most often found in wheat and other grain products. Both children and adults can suffer from this condition. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, weight loss, anemia and even premature osteoporosis. However, patients who make a consistent and concerted effort to stay away from products that contain gluten often find the symptoms disappear.

Crohn’s Disease is a serious chronic inflammatory disease

of the intestines and is closely related to another digestive disorder known as ulcerative colitis. These types of diseases are often referred to as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

IBD affects nearly two million Americans and to date, there’s no cure. Patients who suffer from these conditions often have flare-ups — symptoms are severe for a period of time, then decrease in intensity. In addition to symptoms similar to IBS and celiac disease, individuals with Crohn’s may show signs of skin rashes, sores in their mouths and anal fissures. While there’s no cure for Crohn’s disease, treatment may cause remission of the symptoms.

Because so many digestive disorders have similar symptoms, it’s important to consult with your doctor, who may prescribe medications and/or recommend you see a specialist, as well as a dietitian or nutritionist. A combination of dietary changes, moderate adjustments to your lifestyle and medications may help mitigate severe symptoms of chronic digestive disorders.

On Safari If dining by the light of an outdoor fire, sleeping in a yurt and waking up for a safari to see antelope, zebras, rhinos, giraffes and camels sounds good to you, you don’t have to go to Africa (and it doesn’t require a whole bunch of vaccinations). Just head to Nomad Ridge at the Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio. This 10,000-acre wildlife conserva-

The tour includes six zip lines and four sky bridges, along with all necessary equipment and lighting. For experienced zip liners, the tours are offered on Friday and Saturday nights for $89 per person. They also offer a wide array of daytime tours for both newbie and experienced zip liners. Down South: The U.S. National Whitewater Center outside of Charlotte, N.C. When it comes to adventure, it’s hard to name a type that you won’t find here. The world’s largest man-made whitewater river, USNWC is a nonprofit organization and the training site for the U.S. Olympics Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking teams — and offers no less than a Baker’s Dozen of various water and land activities. Their newest offering, a four-hour guided Canopy Tour, opened this spring. For just $49 per day for adults and $39 for kids 9 and under, you can buy the AllSport pass, giving you all-day unlimited access to whitewater rafting, canyon crossing, climbing, MegaZip, Mega Jump, mountain biking, Adventure Course, Climb 2 Zip, flat-water kayaking, whitewater kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and eco trekking. The diverse ecology, climate zones and terrain of Costa Rica make it one of the world’s best adventure travel destinations. Your adventures here can include zip lining; horseback riding on the slopes of the active volcano; soaking in soothing hot springs; cruising through jungle-lined waterways (home to an array of wildlife) to a remote village and sea-turtle nesting beach; and trekking through superlush forests that are home to howler monkeys, colorful hummingbirds and resplendent quetzals. To help you appreciate the beauty and complexity of wine (and to help you appear as if you know what you’re doing, even if you don’t!), consider the following when wine tasting: Look — Hold the glass by the base or the stem, and tilt it 45 degrees. Look down on the wine, and view the clarity, color and hue. Also notice how much color graduates from the center of the glass to the rim.

Wine should be clear and bright, never cloudy or hazy. Whites can range from almost colorless to hints of yellow or green.

A brownish tinge is a sign of too much oxidation. As for reds, look at the rim of the glass to get a feel for the age. The paler and more brown, the more mature it is.

Now swirl the glass to get the wine moving and aerate it, so it releases its aromas.

Notice how the wine clings to the glass and then trickles down (its “legs”). A wine that

trickles back slowly and in distinct streams is high in alcohol, sugar or both. A wine that breaks quickly and raggedly may be old, light or dry.

Smell — Raise the glass to your nose and sniff. Swirl the wine again, and then smell more deeply. The most common scents are floral, fruity, spicy, vegetative or wood.

More than 500 aromatic compounds have been identified in wine; the fruity aromas come from grapes, the more complex aromas (like yeast, butter or oak) come from the fermentation process, and the aromas produced as wine matures are often subtle and more difficult to describe.

Weird Food Laws / Drop the alcohol and step away from that moose! / It certainly >> made me think when the cab driver, on our way from the airport to our hotel, reminded me ever so gently that chewing gum was against the law in Singapore. How absurd, I thought, as I carefully placed my gum in a paper and stashed it in my purse.

Possible History Too many bratty, snot-faced kids were spitting watermelon seeds at each other and passers-by? It’s all fun and games till someone loses an eye. >Weird Law: It’s against the law to eat while swimming in the ocean in Maryland. Now this one really puzzles me. I grew up in New Jersey and spent much of my formative years swimming in the ocean. Not to brag, but I’ve also swam in the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Tasmanian Sea and on and on. But never, and I mean never, have I seen someone eating while swimming in the ocean.

Plusquellic suddenly decided to pass a law making it illegal to eat cold Luigi’s pizza in the city limits of Akron on Sunday before 10 a.m.? Ridiculous, right?

Possible History People weren’t holding onto their “to go” hamburgers, and when the top bun floated away, too many Maryland swimmers thought it was a Golden Arches Stingray?

Yes ... and no. I’m about to open your eyes to the best weird food laws* around — so prepare to be amazed. You just may wind up thinking that our local and state elected officials really aren’t so wacky after all. (Well … mostly.) I’ve also added my own slant on the possible history behind each of these laws.

>Weird Law: While we’re on the subject of water, it’s illegal to eat an orange in your bath tub in California. I can see this.

The orange does tend to slip out of your wet hands while you’re trying to peel it, which gives the fruit that less-than-desirable bubble-bath taste.

Now discard that gum and pay attention! >Weird Law: In Massachusetts, mourners may eat no more than three sandwiches at a wake.

Possible History People who didn’t particularly care for the deceased were showing up just for the free food. Avoid these people — serve salads!

Possible History The California Orange Marketing and Promotions Council felt that people who were eating oranges in the privacy of their own bathtubs simply weren’t “public” enough — and not doing their part to help promote fruit sales. >Weird Law: The city of Boston declared it illegal to eat peanuts in church. Is there a special Oyster Taskforce? >Weird Law: In Kansas, don’t expect to get cherry pie a la mode on Sundays. And in Wichita, it’s illegal to carry a concealed bean snapper.

Possible History Too many weirdoes going around town asking, “Wanna see my bean snapper?” >Weird Law: If you end up with leftover alcohol while in Fairbanks, Alaska, just remember, it’s illegal to feed it to a moose. Just think of the

>Weird Law: I love this. In South Dakota, it’s illegal to fall asleep in a cheese factory.

Possible History Not enough people on the assembly line to cut the cheese. >Weird Law: There are some that you simply can’t make up, such as in Tennessee, where it’s illegal to use a lasso to catch a fish.

Possible History This must have been an addon to some kind of “it’s illegal to fish while intoxicated” or some other such law. Party poopers. >Weird Law: Texas apparently believes “thou shalt not milk thy neighbors cow” because it’s just plain illegal to milk another person’s cow.

Possible History Tired of cow tipping, Texas teenagers opted to get up at 4 a.m. and rush over to their neighbor’s place and milk their cows. Shame on them! >Weird Law: As an avid baker, I was happy to discover that it’s illegal to dye margarine pink in New Hampshire, and that in Wisconsin, unless a person specifically orders margarine, it’s prohibited to serve it as a substitute for butter.

Possible History Everyone with good taste gravitated to these two states. >Weird Law: Next time you’re taking a day trip along the scenic Ohio River and find yourself hungry and in “almost heaven” West Virginia, just remember, road kill can be taken home for dinner.

Possible History A reaction to a severe animal overpopulation, this law encouraged not only hunters, but also soccer moms, to do their part.

Dinner is served! >Weird Law: Chrissie Hynde, appalled by how much toilet paper people use, removes toilet-paper rolls from the bathrooms in her restaurant, Vegiterranean, opting instead, to give each patron one sheet of toilet paper for every $15 spent. At her urging, Akron City Council has enacted a similar city-wide law that affects all restaurants, titled “The Paper Trail.”

Possible History The city septic system backs up every year at the start of Run for the Cure: Irritable Bowel Syndrome. * Laws like these are difficult to verify (who wants to admit to having this on the books?). And yes, I’ve also taken some “journalistic liberties” here. But let’s assume, for the sake of fun, that they’re all true.

in the 18th and 19th centuries, you were shipped off to Australia on a one-way ticket. This is exactly what happened to James Oatley, a British clockmaker who was found guilty of stealing some bed linen. He received a life sentence and was sent packing to the other side of the world to live out the remainder of his life. But instead of languishing in obscurity, Oatley’s talent for making clocks earned him the reputation as the colony’s most highly regarded clock and watch maker.

His great-great grandson — the famous yachtsman and winemaker Robert Oatley — created Tic Tok wines in honor of James.

Robert Oatley is a proud and passionate Australian who’s credited with pioneering Australian wine to the rest of the world, and the Oatley family vineyards in Mudgee has a wine-making style that focuses on creat-

ing wines with flavors that reflect a lasting impression.

Eating Gluten-Free: A ‘Best Of’ Guide

People with severe gluten allergies essentially put their health in someone else’s hands when they go out to eat. You never know when a chef will take a gluten-free sauce and add some wheat flour to thicken it — “such a small amount, no one would ever know,” I was once told by a server.

And although gluten-free items are becoming more widespread, some restaurants fall sadly behind the curve. At Burger King, you can order your burger “protein-style,” but when I’ve asked for a burger without the bun at the Golden Arches, the confused voice coming from the drive-thru speaker usually says, “Uh … what do you want it ON?”

Best gluten-free cookbooks: When you cook a gluten-free meal in your own kitchen, you can ensure each ingredient is safe for you to eat. Talk with your doctor first, and then check out your library’s gluten-free cookbook section. If a recipe calls for obscure or expensive ingredients — like organic virgin coconut oil … at $19.95 a PINT?!? — are you really going to whip up this meal after a long day’s work?

• Chipotle. A burrito bowl with chips and guac is filling and naturally gluten-free.

• Jimmy John’s. Their UnWiches are filled with the same goodies as their subs but, instead of French bread, they’re wrapped in a huge, crispy lettuce leaf. Perfect when you want a big ol’ sandwich.

• Pick up a box of Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Cake, Cookie or Brownie Mix. Then, read Anne Byrn’s “The Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten-Free.” It’s all you need to make desserts that everyone will love — I promise!
