One of the first places we visited was Blossom, when we went for one of the summer symphony concerts. What a wonderful place to take small children, have a picnic on the lawn and enjoy the summer weather with relaxing music.

Other favorites are Stan Hywet, Hale Farm, Quaker Square (even though our Pie Baking with Mrs. Claus ended when the Pie Factory sadly closed that part of their bakery), and especially, bike riding on the Towpath whenever we can.

The Grill Gene

I

wasn’t born with the “grill gene.” I don’t know how it skipped me since both my sons seems to have it. My sonin-law Jamie has it, as does my son-in-law Randy. I can prepare a great steak marinade with garlic and soy sauce as the main ingredients, but I can’t put it on the grill and serve it up as rare as I like it. Truthfully, I don’t remember my father ever grilling meat on an outdoor fire either. Maybe that’s because he knew he didn’t have the “grill gene” and just didn’t want to waste good money on burnt food.

A few weeks back, we attended my daughter’s house warming party. When we got there, the grill (which was supposed to cook our food) was in pieces, fresh out of the box it came in. I asked my daughter’s fiancé if he needed help. He said no, but about an hour later when the food still wasn’t ready, I asked once more if he needed help. Again he said no, but I had the distinct feeling that panic was beginning to set in. The grill eventually got put together, the fire was lit for the first time and we all cheered as if launching a sailing ship.

Within a few minutes, we were greeted with a large plate of black things shaped vaguely like hot dogs, ribs and sausages. The trouble was the meat was all so charred that I didn’t know what I was eating until I bit into it. I am no better. When they see me at the grill, someone swoops in and takes my meat tongs from me saying, “We don’t want charred chicken.” So, I have taken to inviting at least one person to the cookout who can grill—my sons or sons-in-law for the most part.

I reveal my lack of the “grill gene” to introduce you to our cover feature for this month, “Smokin’ Hot: Everything tastes better outdoors.” When you read about these three cooks and the very different ways they view grilled food, you will see why I, without the “grill gene,” stay away from the charcoal and tongs. I make up for this in other manly ways. I make a great roasted garlic based spaghetti sauce, and no one cooks up a better omelet.

Speaking of food, I want to invite you to go to our website, akronlife.com, and read our new food editor, Jim MacQueen’s entries on our “Flavor” blog, under the Food & Dining section. Jim has been a friend of mine for more than 25 years because we share many of the same interests, namely motor sports, wine and golf.

Jim, however, is a real “foodie” who not only likes food but knows why he likes it. He has traveled the world as a motor sports journalist and has eaten in some of the finest restaurants on the planet (and some of the worst “foodie” hell holes as well). He knows and collects wine, a hobby he started while living in California where he was able to visit the best domestic wineries. We have shared many a meal, and I trust his food and wine acumen even if it’s which hot dog stand at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to patronize. To learn much more about Jim, read his introductory blog entry, “A Full Platter of Life.” I must remember to ask him if he has the “grill gene.”

he annual Women of Compassion Tea to raise awareness for the Harvest Home, women and children’s division of the Haven of Rest, was held May 18 at the Fairlawn Country Club. The tea brings together new friends of the mission with women who have been active in volunteering or raising funds. This year, 102 women attended the event.

Topography

M

ore than 380 guests attended Topography, an evening to celebrate the trails, the landscape and mission of Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association, on Saturday, June 19. Guests arrived at the Virginia Kendall Ledges to enjoy cocktails, appetizers, music and mingling along the scenic Ledges Overlook Trail before hiking to their dinner under candlelit tents at twilight. Afterward they enjoyed desserts and dancing at the Ledges shelter along with a bonfire under a canopy of stars. Proceeds benefit TRAILS FOREVER, a new park initiative to ensure in perpetuity that CVNP will have the resources to maintain and operate a world class trail system.

More than $90,000 was raised.

C

aleb Porter, head coach of the UA men’s soccer team, has been “living, eating and breathing” soccer from a very young age. Growing up, he remembers having posters of his favorite players in his room and “memorizing the entire video” of the ‘88 European championships. Oh, and upsetting his mom when he’d break things while kicking the ball around the house.

But all the broken collectibles paid off when Porter went on play soccer at the college level, ultimately hoping to play professionally. Despite sustaining a knee injury before his final year of soccer at Indiana University, Porter played a brief stint in major league soccer. But he quickly decided he couldn’t continue playing through the constant pain.

Still, Porter knew he wouldn’t give up his love of the game, so he went on to do the next best thing—coach at his alma mater.

By the sixth year, however, Porter was itching to lead a team of his own. Ultimately, he signed with UA in 2006 and has since led the team to an overall record of 68-12-8 (.818) and 20-1-1 (.932) in Mid-American Conference play. Last season, the team was just one penalty kick short of winning the NCAA Division I Championship.

And it all comes back to Porter’s dedication to the game. “I’m fanatical about it; you could call it borderline obsessed,” he says. “As a coach, you’re rarely turning it off. Even when I’m not in the office I’m watching games or reading books.”

The most fulfilling part of the job: “(College soccer) is a high

level of soccer, but the players are still kids, and they still have a lot to learn. I really enjoy the fact that I can help them grow— not only as soccer players, but as people.”

Why he came to Akron: He wanted to join a program where

he could accomplish the same things he was accomplishing at Indiana.

When he’s not on the field: He’s spending time with his wife

and two young sons.

Inspirations: Jerry Yeagley, his former coach and mentor as

both a player and assistant coach at Indiana University and this quote by former NFL coach Don Shula: “A raging river without banks is a puddle.”

A Metaphoric Journey Through the Tall Grass

O

ur destination was the labyrinth at Crown Point Ecology Center in Bath Township. We found it and walked its unicursal course in slightly more time than it takes to write about it, then proceeded to learn about how it was created and why.

Some definitions might be in order here.

Unicursal refers to the single path that leads from the entrance to the center of a labyrinth. It is this unicursal design that spells the difference between a labyrinth and a maze, according to all the material we read in preparation for our walk. The path, by the way, was 868 paces through grass that was at least three feet high, according to artist Chuck Ayers’ count.

A website called lessons4living.com defined labyrinth as “a metaphor for life’s journey” and “a symbol that creates a sacred space and place and takes us out of our ego to ‘That Which is Within.’ “ The site also discussed the differences between labyrinths and mazes: “A labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is like a puzzle to be solved. It has twists, turns and blind alleys. It is a left brain task that requires logical, sequential, analytical activity to find the correct path into the maze and out. A labyrinth has only one path.

It is unicursal. The way in is the way out.

There are no blind alleys. The path leads you on a circuitous path to the center and out again.

involves intuition, creativity and imagery.

With a maze many choices must be made and an active mind is needed to solve the problem of finding the center. With a labyrinth there is only one choice...to enter or not... At its most basic level the labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey to the center of your deepest self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are.”

Another website introduced us to the World-Wide Labyrinth Locator, which provided more information than most of us would ever want on the subject.

Suffice to say its database lists some 3,400 labyrinths in more than 70 countries.

Considering the spiritual nature of labyrinths, it was no surprise to learn that

the one at Crown Point is a creation of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, the order of Catholic nuns that operates Our Lady of the Elms School in Akron, and which, until recently, was known as the Sisters of St. Dominic.

Larry Jarvis, maintenance manager of the 130-acre farm of which the labyrinth is part, shared some of its history as he showed us around.

Crown Point was named by Jacob and Abigail Swigart, who bought the property—the highest spot in Bath Township and possibly the second highest in Summit County—in 1854 and built the home that today is the center’s headquarters. Between 1861 and 1879, the farm changed hands four times, then was owned by Roswell Hopkins and his descendants until 1949, when it was bought by Hugh and Mary Ann Stoller.

The Stollers sold the land to the Sisters of St. Dominic in 1967 and the sisters established the ecology center in 1989 and began hosting organic plant sales in 2005. Ayers and I attended this year’s sale, the sixth annual, independent of each other and decided we had to return to produce this feature.

Inside the farm’s sturdy red barn Jarvis showed us where the sisters taught 6-to11-year-olds about farming and science each Monday through Friday during June and July. The barn was built in 1910 to replace one that burned, we learned, when tenant farmers built a fire to keep their pigs warm.

The barn’s centennial anniversary will be observed Aug. 21 at the center’s annual “Taste of Earth” fundraiser.

Two other big events this month are the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s farm tour from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 14, and the Seasonal Labyrinth Walk from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept.

Canton Film Festival: Call for Entries

The Canton Palace Theatre is seeking innovative, independent films now through Sept. 1 for its First Annual International Film Festival.

All categories, all genres and lengths from 10 seconds to two hours are welcome. Qualifying formats include Super 8, 8mm, 16mm Super 16, 35mm film and digital videos transferred to DVD, Blue Ray or 35 mm film for viewing.

The festival runs Oct. 7-10 as a fundraiser for the theater, which will host workshops and symposiums with notable filmmakers in addition to screenings.

his spring I was able to visit the Biltmore Estate and Winery in Ashville, North Carolina. It was built in 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt and remains family owned. Each year more than a million people visit America’s largest home, which also includes gardens, a four-star inn and a state-of-the-art winery. The winery is celebrating its 25th year, using grapes grown on the Biltmore Estate along with those sourced from selected California vineyards.

Meet three guys with three different approaches to cooking and one simple idea:

Dutch Oven Master: Dan Trudgen

“Y

ou can’t be overly fussy,” Dan Trudgen says in explaining his preferred method of outdoor cooking. “You gotta let it go.”

Trudgen’s style may be “no fuss,” but his approach has the same precision he uses on his day job. As director of management reporting and planning for Progressive Insurance, Trudgen plans his work and works his plan.

His plan involves stacking as many as four Dutch ovens on top of each other with hot coals strategically placed above, underneath and in between. Every 15 minutes or so, he rotates the pots and spins the lids to keep the internal temperature of each pot as close to 350 degrees as possible. He watches to see when coals cool down so he can replace them with hotter ones. And he never takes the lid off while the food is cooking. “Look at it, and you lose 50 degrees,” he says with the intensity of a drill instructor.

Massive egg bakes and 30-egg omelets are no big deal to Trudgen. “It’s more efficient to cook in quantity than for everyone to cook their own meals,” he says.

Known for his campfire lasagna, spare ribs, stew with dumplings on top, and pineapple upside down cake, he’s also had great success with Swiss steak, meatloaf, jambalaya and even whole hams. While he’s happy to accommodate requests for favorite dishes, he is always looking to try new things.

He lines his Dutch ovens with foil for apple dumpling pie, chocolate layer cakes or cinnamon rollsmade from tubes of refrigerated French bread. He uses coffee cans for cornbread, muffin mixes or

Jiffy cakes. “If you can make it in the kitchen, you can make it outdoors,” Trudgen says. “Maybe it doesn’t look as good, but it definitely tastes better.”

In June, Trudgen went camping in Utah’s Grand Escalante with about half a dozen guys from Stow. Most years, he is the designated chef for an annual men’s getaway with a dozen or more friends from his church.

Many of Trudgen’s recent adventures in cooking have been at “guys only” events, but he and his wife, Dancene, hosted a massive apple butter making party at their Richfield home last August. This year, they’re hosting an encore event with 13 bushels of apples, twice the amount they used last year.

Cast-Iron Chef: Dave Gates

“D

ave Gates still remembers the sense of accomplishment he got from building a fire and cooking a meal for his Boy Scout troop at Pelee Island.

He wowed ‘em with his poor man’s sweet and sour pork—canned ham cubed with pineapple preserves and ketchup, cooked in a cast iron skillet and served over rice. That was more than 40 years ago. He’s been cooking with cast iron ever since.

Some of his skillets are older than he is. His cast-iron pie irons can transform the humblest of ingredients into rustic fireside paninis. Today, as a naturalist with the Metro Parks Serving Summit County, Gates makes simple campfire food year-round at park-sponsored events. He cooks meals outdoors a couple times a month for himself and friends.

Gates’ no-frills style may not be gourmet, but he does have his own set of standards. “Beans and hot dogs are not exactly what I’m aiming for,” he says with a smile.

These days, Gates tops his rice with steak kabobs skewered with pineapple, onion, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. He bakes potatoes (foil wrapped or slathered in mud to protect the skins from burning on hot coals). He makes a mean Dutch oven cobbler—fruit on the bottom, crumbly

crust made from Bisquick or Jiffy cake mix doctored up with brown sugar, spices, coconut, walnuts or almonds and dried orange peel—whatever he has on hand.

Time is an issue in outdoor cooking.

It takes a while to build a fire. It takes a while to heat the coals. Sometimes, Gates says, the “microwave generation” finds that unsettling because they can’t have dinner in three minutes. For him, it only adds to the adventure.

“Everything tastes better outside.

Maybe it’s the anticipation; maybe it’s just where I want to be,” he says.

“There’s something about standing next to a fire and the smells associated with it. You have to slow down.

But it gives people time to make a personal connection... to see more... to learn more.”

Gates’ Pie Irons Tips * Choose the right bread for the right recipe.

Cinnamon raisin bread makes great French toast dipped in egg and served with syrup or preserves. Italian bread is good for pizzas. Rye or pumpernickel work well with ham and cheese.

Neighborhood Gourmet: Doug Lindsey

D

oug Lindsey’s friends and family never know what they’re gonna get at his cookouts and campfires. They just know it’s gonna be good.

Lindsey’s menus often feature down home favorites with an upscale twist.

He’s been known to serve sushi right alongside the hot dogs at tailgates outside the Copley High School stadium.

He and his wife, Sue, serve two turkeys each Thanksgiving. She bakes one traditionally in the oven; he fries the other in a turkey fryer outdoors.

That’s enough to serve 10 people and still have plenty of leftovers.

Last year, on a whitewater rafting trip to Ohio Pyle with a group of more than 20 neighborhood dads and their sons, Lindsey bought $250 worth of steaks near their destination. He loaded them—two at a time—onto three-pronged garden hoes and deep fried them in one of his turkey fryers.

He used a second fryer, filled with water, to boil dozens of ears of corn for the group.

Doing an outdoor steak fry for 20+ people was an ambitious undertaking, “maybe even stupid in retrospect,” Lindsey laughs. Still, it took just three and a half to four minutes to fry up each pair of steaks. The end result was “wonderful,” he beams.

Lindsey’s inspiration came from a trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park where the outdoor chefs of Medora load their rib eyes, five at a time, onto pitchforks and deep fry them in big

black pots on the bluffs overlooking the badlands of North Dakota.

They serve their nationally acclaimed ‘pitchfork steak fondue’ to groups of 200-300 people at a time.

“We try to introduce (our sons) to challenging things (on our camping trips),” Lindsey says. “Cooking is a part of that.”

When they camped at Hocking Hills, where “you can zip line, tree to tree, for like two hours,” Lindsey and his son Zach wrapped cubed ham, green beans, corn and tater tots in tin foil “burrito style” and cooked their creation over hot coals. The guys loved it.

When they camped at East Harbor State Park on Lake Erie, Lindsey used the turkey fryer again. This time, it was a fish fry with perch and walleye.

After trying the beer can chicken at Blue Canyon Kitchen & Tavern in Twinsburg, Lindsey bought an inexpensive chicken roasting rack to make his own version on his backyard grill. He rubs a whole chicken with olive oil and seasonings, sits the chicken upright over a half-empty can of root beer, pops a wedge of red-skinned potato in its neck “like a plug” and cooks it on a low, indirect heat (about 200 degrees) for two hours.

Pork tenderloins marinated overnight and grilled at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes are another family favorite. But in Lindsey’s mind, few meals can top his backyard breakfasts on sunny Saturday mornings. “The whole family is there,” he says. “It’s a good time.”

Outdoor Cooking is Better When You...

1. Look for opportunities to buy local.

2. Think creatively.

Trudgen remembers watching lobster boats going by while sea kayaking off the coast of Maine. He bought lobsters from them, cooked them in pots with seaweed and topped them with butter buds. His campfire lobster dinner wasn’t planned in advance, but it was great.

Lindsey puts his own twist on s’mores by spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers. Gates makes pie iron Monte Cristos by dipping the outsides of the bread only and adding ham or turkey with cheese inside. Experiment and have fun!

3. Enlist helpers.

Organize cooking tasks so friends and family members can help instead of trying to do it all on your own. One person can start the grill or fire while another is cutting up vegetables, for example.

4. Have the right tools for the job.

For beer can chicken, Lindsey bought a rack for about $7 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. A mesh barbeque pan with holes in it is perfect for making vegetables on the grill.

5. Recycle containers.

Trudgen uses Mentos containers or empty tubes of M&Ms for dry ingredients in his outdoor kitchen. Must haves like crazy salt, cinnamon or cayenne pepper are well organized and handy in his travel spice kit.

6. Check the propane ahead of time.

What’s worse than having your propane tank run out of fuel before your meal is done? Get an extra tank before an event, if your existing tank is low.

7. Don’t try to do too many things at once.

Lindsey said he gets into trouble if he’s trying to balance his checkbook or do other things while grilling. “Be there, 100 percent,” he advises.

8. Clean as you go.

Clean pots as soon as you’re done eating so they’re ready to go the next time you use them. Reseason cast iron pots, pans and pie irons with vegetable oil, inside and out, after each use.

M

any of Akron’s opulent old estates have become museums, office spaces or architectural firms. More than a few have been razed. Still, a surprising num ber of once grand properties dot the urban landscape.

Not all are mansions, but many are spacious dwellings built at the height of our city’s “rubber boom” between 1902 and 1919.

Here’s a look at two old gems—full of charm, rich in history and built to last. Who lives there now...how did they reclaim the space...and what’s it like to own a little piece of history so close to the heart of the city?

THE HIDDEN RETREAT WITH A SPECTACULAR SUNRISE VIEW She wasn’t impressed the first time Walter Wojno, her college sweetheart, took her to see the old brick house on Perkins Hill. It was built in 1912 as the Gate Lodge (a caretaker’s home) on part of a historic property called Auld Farm. Walter bought it in 1947.

He thought it would be a good investment. She thought it needed an awful lot of work. “I told my mother I never saw such a horrible house in my life,” Virginia Wojno-Forney recalls.

Because the home was built when electricity first came to town, an unreliable electrical system with gaslight backups in every fixture proved to be a challenge to comfortable living.

Initially, Walter rented the property to an architect and an interior designer. They rewired everything, converted the furnace from coal to gas and made a number of other practical and aesthetic changes to make the place more livable.

Walter and Virginia (married by this time) moved into the Gate Lodge in 1951. Their daughter grew up in the home, and Virginia has lived there ever since.

The original structure was not too large—just a living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor plus four bedrooms and a bath upstairs. During their time together, the Wojnos added a music room and a breakfast room. Those additions went pretty smoothly.

It was a different story when they tried to add a half bath with a whirlpool tub upstairs. Their dining room ceiling caved in, destroying their mahogany dining table and leaving the couple without a bathroom for three months while steel support beams were installed. Virginia still reels at the memory of being forced to rent a room at the motel next to St. Vincent’s just to use its bathroom.

The home’s exterior—all brick with the original slate roof— has required little maintenance over the years. The couple did add a decorative rod iron fence, rod iron window embellishments (for security) and rod iron exterior accents—all in keeping with the period décor of the original gate at the entrance to their property.

with their dog, Buddy. “Our closest neighbors are lions at the zoo,” she says.

Majestic old trees and well-cared-for gardens give the 3 1/2acre property the feel of a private retreat. The front yard on the hilltop is the ideal place to watch the sunrise.

Behind the house, a stone and brick patio and a rustic backyard gazebo add to the living space. A stone path weaves its way between trees. Outdoor sculptures grace both open and unexpected spaces.

Buddy’s oversize doghouse, purchased from the sale at Stan Hywet last year, and a miniature model of the Mustill Store (given to Virginia by the Cascade Locks Park Association, which she founded) are vivid pictures of a woman who’s still active in community affairs and who devotes much of her time to making our town a better place to live. “I’m bullish on Akron,” she says.

Turns out the old property on Perkins Hill was a good investment after all.

“Splitting Up” by Virgil Dillers echoes the pattern of the tree behind it.

Now... and Then Hidden behind the massive trees on Perkins Hill, the century-old gate is your first clue to something grand from Akron’s past. The Carriage House, probably twice the size of the Gate Lodge where the Wojno-Forney’s live, still sits next door. But Auld Farm’s sprawling manor house, built in 1902, was torn down in the 1960s to build Saferstein Towers senior citizens apartments.

Auld Farm was the home of Charles G. Raymond, a young executive at BF Goodrich and his wife, Mary Perkins Raymond, daughter of George Tod Perkins, BF Goodrich president. He was the grandson of Simon Perkins, Akron’s founder.

The farm was also home to Akron’s first golf course. The crude, nine-hole Portage Golf Club, built in 1894, used the John Brown House as its clubhouse. Renamed The Portage Country Club, it moved in 1905 to its current location at Twin Oaks and Portage Path.

Wojno-Forney traces the history of her property back to Colonial times when George Washington came out to the Western Reserve as a surveyor. The 1789 westernmost boundary dividing the United States and Indian Territory runs right through the back yard.

THE GEORGIAN REVIVAL ON DIAGONAL ROAD While living in the San Francisco Bay area, Steve and Jan Brown found their Georgian Revival (Colonial) home on the Internet. One of three properties they planned to tour in Ohio between Christmas and New Year’s at the end of 2007, its innercity location on Akron’s Diagonal Road made it an unlikely choice.

Originally from Ohio, the Browns wanted to return to be closer to Jan’s family. Prices in California were skyrocketing, gasoline was $3.50 a gallon, and the debt-heavy state was borrowing even more money. “It was time to go,” Steve says.

The couple had hoped to find “something small in the country” probably an informal place on the water. They looked at a home on the Portage Lakes and another in Uniontown. But the formal home on Diagonal Road won their affections from the moment they stepped across the threshold.

After spotting the fine leaded glass window in front of the library behind the entrance hall landing, Jan knew this was the house she wanted. With 13 rooms (three full bedrooms, two and a half baths and a sun room) on a little over two acres, this 4,483+ square foot home was oozing with old-world charm.

“It’s got the elegance of an era that doesn’t exist anymore,” Jan says. “If it’s been here for 100 years, it’s not gonna fall down,” she reasons.

Knowing that whatever house they chose would need renovations anyway, they decided to go for one that was worth restoring. The original slate roof, copper downspouts, flatarched, keystone windows with shutters aligned at both stories are among its distinctive architectural features.

The house was owned by a bank when the couple bought it for just over $200,000 in 2008. A property like this one on the West Coast would be well into the seven figures, they say.

Pretty much every spare moment for the past two years, the pair has worked on their house and its grounds with the help of Jan’s brother-in-law, Lanny Steckel.

In addition to a massive clean up, tearing off many layers of old wallpaper and paint and tearing down overgrown shrubs and trees, the couple completed a 15-month kitchen renovation and upgraded the heating and cooling systems.

They added a rod iron fence and gates out front and are getting bids on replacing a portion of the exterior portico.

Their clean-up efforts earned them a beautification award from Keep Akron Beautiful last year.

Then... and Now

Playing history detectives, the Browns have talked with their neighbors at the Summit County Historical Society. They’ve done some research on their own, and they continue to uncover new pieces of the past right on the property.

The Browns’ new home has a rich and interesting history. It was built for descendants of the Hall family who opened the Cascade Store at the corner of Howard and Market streets in 1835. That location in Akron’s central business district was known as Hall’s Corner for nearly a hundred years.

Outside, they’ve found an old casing for a well which they believe was near a stable, a picnic area, a half-moon patio next to the house and a brick pathway that Steve calls his “Akron archeology project.” The position of their trees leads them to believe their property may have been a part of the old Portage Golf Club course. Inside, they discovered many original features and fixtures. A third-floor sink bowl, made in 1896, is one example.

The Philander Hall, whom they believe is their home’s original owner, is known for developing The Hall Park Allotment Historic District, a West Hill neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places. This Oakdale Avenue development is marked by a number of great period homes in American Foursquare, Craftsman, Colonial and Medieval Revival styles. Its brick streets, gently rolling hills and mature trees have given it an enduring beauty.

Their home was built sometime between 1902 and 1918, although the original plans from the city were lost in a fire in 1942.

R. G. Yeager, president of the C. H. Yeager Company, a popular Akron department store (which closed in 1968) bought the Diagonal Road property from the Hall family. The Yeagers lived there until the early 1970s, according to the Brown’s research.

In the decades that followed, the property was home to the Lutheran Service League, the NAACP and the Area Agency on Aging. The building survived a fire in 2004. It was reclaimed for residential use by the Browns in 2008.

Living today in what many people perceive to be a rough neighborhood was a concern for the couple before they moved in. They installed a good security system, are pleased with the police patrols and have discovered that there’s very little crime along their section of Perkins Hill.

Two active, friendly churches and the Saferstein Towers apartments are their closest neighbors. Their street is among the first to be plowed when it snows each winter. Unfortunately, it’s also on the ambulance path for both hospitals. Still, it’s proven to be “a very comfortable neighborhood,” Jan says.

Everybody Wins Academic competitions engage students and enhance learning.

t’s about that time for students to begin thinking about what extra curricular activities they want to participate in this school year. Although they might not garner the same fanfare as football games or basketball tournaments, academic competitions are an excellent way to foster students’ growth, both socially as well as academically, and help translate lessons learned in the classroom into real-life applications.

Originally aimed for junior high students, Power of the Pen launched an adjunct program, Power of the Pencil, in 2006 for fifth and sixth graders. Participants compete at the district, regional and state levels.

Before summer ends, take time to explore Ohio’s “North Coast,” where you’ll discover sandy beaches, lighthouses, historic captains’ homes, festivals and stunning sunsets. Take a long walk along the beach, dip your toes in the lake or pull up a beach chair to experience the many moods of Lake Erie.

Marblehead Lighthouse State Park

This white native limestone lighthouse trimmed in red has been guiding ships and boats since 1822. Climb the 87 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse, and you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Kelly’s Island, South Bass Island and Cedar Point. Stop at the on-site Keeper’s House which serves as a museum, welcome center and gift shop. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available. Within the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park, you’ll find picnic facilities, fishing and walking trails.

Lakeside, known as the Chautauqua on Lake Erie, continues in the Chautauquan tradition of providing a 10-week season of lectures, concerts, religious programs and classes.

Popular recreational venues at Lakeside include shuffleboard, tennis and miniature golf. Rent a golf cart or bike and follow historic pathways past charming Victorian cottages. Looking for a campground along Lake Erie? East Harbor State Park, situated on the Marblehead peninsula, offers the largest number of campsites in the Ohio State Park system.

Sept. 10-12 brings PerchFest, a grand celebration of food, live entertainment and a perch fishing tournament to the Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park. This Lakeside community overlooks two historic lighthouses and is home to two museums: Fairport Harbor Marine Museum dedicated to maritime artifacts and life on the Great Lakes and the Finnish Heritage Museum showcasing the rich traditions of Finns who arrived in Fairport Harbor in the midto-late 1800s.

Often referred to as “Ohio’s First Resort Town,” a visit to Geneva-on-theLake is a trip back to another era. Clinical Trials Q: I hear a lot about clinical trials for cancer patients. What’s it all about?

A: “Clinical trials are research studies for patients and are designed to evaluate whether a new therapy is safe, effective and better than the current standard of care,” says Dr. Sameer Mahesh, Summa Health System Medical Oncologist. “In fact, the impressive advances in cancer treatment over the last few years can be traced directly to clinical trials that evaluated these new cancer therapies.”

While such trials occur at major universities and medical centers across the globe, Mahesh says Summa Health System plays a significant role in nationally conducted trials. “People may think they have to travel to other parts of the state or country to be involved in cutting-edge clinical trials. The fact is they need only look in their backyard.”

Dr. Mahesh and colleagues work at Summa’s Jean B. and Milton N. Cooper Cancer Center, a 60,000-square-foot facility located on the Summa Akron City Hospital campus and home to some of the most progressive, comprehensive cancer treatments available.

“Unlike some facilities where you have radiation in one building and research in another building a mile away, we bring advanced diagnostics, treatment, support and research under one roof,” Mahesh says. He also notes “every eligible cancer patient at Summa is offered the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial when treatment options are discussed.”

Perhaps this is why Mahesh and his team consistently receive patient satisfaction ratings well above national averages. Summa Health System is one of only 10 community oncology programs in the country to receive honors from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for its efforts in improving the care of people with cancer through clinical research. Summa’s cancer program is also recognized by U.S. News & World Report for its excellence in care and holds one of the highest ratings by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer.

“We’re proud to have a large percentage of our cancer patients involved in clinical trials, however, we still see patients who have a high level of uncertainty about clinical trials,” Mahesh says.

“Being diagnosed with cancer can often be frightening enough for someone, let alone trying to understand a clinical trial. We often hear questions like, Will I be a guinea pig? or How much more will this cost me? The simple answer is, of course, no. However, we do expect patients to be active participants in their entire treatment program,” Mahesh explains.

Mahesh attributes the improvement in survival rates for people diagnosed with cancer to greater awareness and detection.

According to the American Cancer Society, as many as two-thirds of all cancer cases could be prevented if people applied what is now known about cancer prevention in their daily lives.

Living at First & Main Proximity to work, restaurants and shopping make this neighborhood one of Hudson’s finest.

W

hen Amy Cook first met her husband, who lived in Hudson, she swore she’d never move there. Eleven years later, she can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Cook initially was drawn to the area when she and her husband, Shawn Lyden, were looking for a good location to open a yoga studio, and Hudson seemed like the best fit. It wasn’t too far from Lyden’s job at Akron Children’s Hospital, and it allowed the couple to be closer to Lyden’s children, both students at Hudson High School.

So, the couple opened the Yoga Lounge on First Street and purchased a townhome at First & Main. Though they considered buying a single-family home, a

lot of the older homes they looked at needed renovation. After already renovating their home in West Akron in the last 10 years, the couple wasn’t in any hurry to go through that process again.

The townhome proved to be the perfect solution. It has plenty of room for the couple and their two dogs, as well as enough space for when Lyden’s children and Cook’s son and daughter come to visit. Plus the townhome

requires very little maintenance. “Life is so simple,” Cook says. “I had no idea how much energy I put into our house, keeping up the yard and everything.”

Now Cook is able to walk to work every day, bringing her dogs along with her. She also runs a physician recruiting business out of the yoga studio, so between the two businesses it’s not uncommon for Cook to spend long hours at work. This way, she has just a short walk home at night.

Although Cook didn’t know anyone in Hudson before moving there, she says she is fortunate to have met many wonderful people through her work.

And because she walks everywhere, she has gotten to know people better. “It’s a very friendly community,” she says.

“Everybody stops and talks.”

Shopping and dining are two of the biggest attractions at Hudson’s First & Main.

Of course one of the best perks of living at First & Main is the close proximity to shops and restaurants. A few of Cook’s favorites are Tomato Grill, Downtown 140 and The Grey Colt. She also admits that she stops in Heinen’s every day and is at The Greenhouse at least once a week.

And there’s always something going on in Hudson. “It feels like a city without the craziness,” Cook explains. “I love the traffic. I love the buzz. I love when the library is crowded.”

Now that Cook lives here, she has no plans of moving elsewhere. “I feel really blessed, really fortunate,” she says.

“It’s about the people; it’s about how you feel every day when you walk out the door.”

Hudson is an amazing community with so much to offer. The history, the charm, the community events and the schools all weighed heavily in our decision to live in Hudson.

What do you like most about living and working in the community?

The camaraderie. I work with so many organizations in Hudson and it’s amazing to see how they all join together to showcase our city. And it’s nice to see so many familiar faces as you stroll through town.

Do you feel Hudson attracts a lot of young professionals? Why or why not?

I think Hudson is moving toward attracting more young professionals.

The variety of large and small corporations and locally owned businesses coupled with the access to the major freeways makes Hudson a convenient location between Akron and Cleveland.

Hudson has something for everyone.

Favorite Hudson restaurant?

All of them! I have a favorite dish at pretty much every restaurant in town!

Favorite place to relax on the weekend?

We are big fans of nature and the beach, so we try to utilize our park and lakes systems as much as possible.

I helped create the Hudson Wine Festival three years ago, so I’m pretty partial to it. However, I work on many of the other events around town including Taste of Hudson and I try to attend as many as possible to support local organizations.

Definitely the people. I love how the merchants and residents open their doors and hearts to the community and visitors, and work together to showcase Hudson as the great destination it is.

Hail to the Chefs

T

he fifth annual 1 Hail to the Chefs took place June 5 at the Hudson Library & Historical Society. This preview to the annual Labor Day event, Taste of Hudson, hosted more than 200 people who dined on fine food sections from 13 restaurants and food purveyors. The Fabulous Voices Band provided entertainment, and the silent auction helped to raise more than $8,000 for the Safe Kids Coalition of Summit County and other Taste of Hudson Charities. Executive Director of the Hudson Library & Historical Society, Leslie Polott, received the annual Children at Heart award for her support of the community’s youth.

Art on the Green Artisans from around the state and as far away as Florida will be setting up shop in 150 booths at Hudson’s Art on the Green, Aug. 28-29. What’s the difference between a blimp and a zeppelin?

Both are engine-driven and steerable, but they differ in terms of their internal structures. Blimps completely hold their shape with gas pressure, while zeppelins are formed by metal support frames and supported by gas pressure.

ince 1925, Akron-based Goodyear blimps and zeppelins have taken to the sky, serving as icons for the world’s largest tire and rubber company. And where there is one icon, there’s probably at least one more standing right beside it.

Enter Miss Amelia Earhart. The aviatrix was a frequent visitor to the Akron-Cleveland area during the 1920s and ‘30s—a time when aviation was booming in the region.

On Sept. 7, 1929, Earhart was present at the National Air Races in Cleveland where she christened the Defender—the largest of a fleet of five Goodyear airships at 178,000 cubic feet.

Shortly thereafter, First Lady Lou Henry Hoover was in Akron to christen the U.S.S. Akron on Aug. 8, 1931. A crowd of thousands was on hand for the spectacular event. Earhart was among them.

There are other indications—namely a telegram invitation from the Akron Women’s Chapter of the National Aeronautics Association in 1932 or photos of her at the Cleveland Municipal Airport in 1936—that Earhart revisited the area from time to time.

Despite being among more than 100 female aviators of the era, Earhart stood out as a star. Not only was she the first woman to complete a solo flight across the Atlantic, but she was known for her ability to articulate as well as the sense of glamour that surrounded her.

Yet, it’s the still-unsolved mystery of her plane’s disappearance in 1937 that solidified Earhart’s place in history.
