was very moved by your story about your life’s experience with your dogs (Publisher’s Page, December 2009). I do agree that animals do find you and not the other way around.

So was the case with Hamada, a black sharpei/lab mix. One day he walked into our back studio door and we instantly fell in love with this dog. I could tell you many stories, but the essence of his spirit impacted me like no other animal and I’ve had many. He died at the age of 4 due to a liver disease but will remain in my heart forever. I was determined to remember him daily and framed his picture along with this poem and there isn’t a day go by without some thought of him.

You might have read this but here it goes: “There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who

have never lived through its turnings or walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.”—Suzanne Clothier It is a fragile circle. But it goes round and round without end.

The Good and The Bad in 2010

A

couple of really good things are happening in Akron in 2010, and one not-so-good thing as well. The good things are the completion of the new/old Howe House as part of the Ohio & Erie Canalway and the soon-to-be-booming Biomedical Corridor. The not so good thing is the sketchy future of the All-American Soap Box Derby.

I’m enthusiastic about the Canalway because we just had a behind-the-scenes tour of the newly renovated Howe House, which was moved from South Main Street to its current place on West Exchange Street, overlooking the Ohio & Erie Canal. This is the decrepit, old house that sat across from the Beacon Journal building since 1838. It was built

by Richard Howe, who was the resident engineer from 1825 to 1832 in charge of building the Cascade Locks. Howe placed it several blocks away for a good reason. Besides carrying goods and produce from the interior of Ohio and the Midwest, the canal also was a magnet for gamblers, pick-pockets, prostitutes and thieves of all sorts. It carried a horrible stench because many along the route used it as their personal sewer.

Today, however, the old house sits next to the canal, and the view is incredible. The stench is gone, as are the undesirables. If I didn’t know better, I would think that the Howe House was a new building constructed in the old Federal style. Welty Building Co. and Braun & Steidl Architects did such a good job on the renovation that it is difficult to tell where the old brick and the new brick meet, where they have had to add-on or replace damaged parts of the house. Inside, however, it is readily evident that the house was designed almost two centuries ago because of the room size and arrangement. Both the exterior and the interior have substantial architectural elements and fabric that directly relate to the era of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Nearly all of the extant exterior features, including the stone lintels, door surrounds and window fenestration, illustrate high style elements of Federal architecture. Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition President Dan Rice envisions the Howe House as a regional landmark, which will serve as an information center for visitors to the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway. Please take the time to visit this year. It’s a must-see in 2010.

The second thing I’m really excited about for 2010 is the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron, a partnership among Akron’s three hospitals, The University of Akron and the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. You may or may not be aware of the city of Akron’s attempt to develop a Biomedical Corridor, which would be developed along Vernon Odom Boulevard, roughly between Akron General and Akron City Hospital. The federal government just gave the institute a $1-million grant to purchase equipment to support orthopedic research. This comes on the heels of the $20 million that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation gave last year, and other monies granted totaling $70 million so far in the first year. The goal is to bring in $50 million per year in research grants and create 2,400 high paying jobs within a decade. I think they are well on their way.

Things are not looking so rosy for all of us Soap Box Derby fans for 2010. The derby has not had a national sponsor for a couple of years now and has been losing money since then. They had a credit line with FirstMerit Bank, owing more than a half a million dollars. Then, last month, FirstMerit called their loan, demanding all their money right now, which seemed to me to be a horrible public relations move. The derby has no money, but they do have some valuable property in Derby Downs and the surrounding land. In the meantime, Derby President Jim Huntsman has taken a leave of absence to concentrate on his health. And Jeff Iula, “Mr. Soap Box Derby,” who lives and breathes the derby, has been elected to a city council seat in Cuyahoga Falls and is unsure if he is returning. The one bright spot in the whole mess is that Corbin Bernstein is trying to raise money to produce a motion picture about the Soap Box Derby. This seems to me like pinning their dreams on a very long shot, in hoping that the actor can raise awareness about the derby and also bring it a national sponsor. I suggest that FirstMerit become the sponsor, because that may be the only way that they will ever get their loan repaid. Held at Fairlawn Country Club, the event provided a venue for emerging women leaders to gain valuable information about leadership from established leaders. In addition, similar events took place around the country. Proceeds from the Akron lunch benefit the Judith A. Resnik Scholarship Fund.

Dinner of Champions

T

he third annual Akron/Canton Dinner of Champions Gala took place Sept. 30 at the Quaker Station in Akron. During the event, the National MS Society honored Summa Health System President and CEO Thomas Strauss for his dedicated commitment to community service. Guests began the evening with a silent auction and cocktail reception, followed by dinner and the award program. Proceeds from the gala will be used to provide programs and services for more than 18,000 Ohioans who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

aul Feezel joined in the Sierra Club in 1988 after attending a club-sponsored meeting about how human population numbers impact the environment. “I became the local Population and the Environment chair and have been involved ever since,” he says.

Today, Feezel is on the Executive Committee for the Sierra Club’s Portage Trail Group, which covers nine counties and has about 2,200 members, most of whom are located in Summit County.

The committee is the local board that directs educational and advocacy activities. The Sierra Club is the largest and oldest (founded in 1892 by John Muir) conservation organization in the world.

Locally, the group has raised money for the John and Betty Seiberling Cuyahoga Valley Ecological Education Center foundation, which provides grants to low income/inner city youth to attend overnight educations programs in Ohio’s only national park—the CVNP. “We helped initiate the fund and have provided contributions for nearly 15 years,” Feezel explains. In addition, the group started Lights Out, an event to raise awareness about electrical energy usage, and provides educational programs on national parks, environmental conservation and other topics to schools and civic organizations, among other activities.

On a personal level, Feezel and his wife, Diana, began construction of a eco-friendly house in Carrollton, Ohio in 2004. It is a timber frame built from non-indigenous red pine with straw-bale walls, which are used like bricks and then covered with an earthen plaster mixture inside and out. The house has a passive solar design and natural ventilation for cooling. “We did not use any drywall like traditional houses on interior walls and instead used urban harvested (trees being cut down for non-lumber reasons) to make tongue and groove paneling,” 14

What activities do you enjoy in your free time?

We love both summer and winter outdoor activities. This time of year we look forward to cold weather for ice skating on our pond, cross-country skiing on 2 miles of trails, downhill skiing in Ohio and out West. We started growing organic blueberries (about the only thing we could get to grow on our terrible soil) and raising a small flock of free range, full lifespan (i.e., never culled) chickens for eggs. I play drums in a gray-haired garage band, brew beer, see friends— heck I like to try most things.

If you could suggest one habit that people should add to their daily lives to become more “green,” what would it be?

Think about what you buy before you buy it. Do you really need it? Where was it made? Is the company who made it environmentally conscious? What will happen when you are through with it—can it be reused or recycled? Unfortunately Americans are only 5 percent of the world’s population but consume nearly 30 percent of the world’s resources. Our consumerist approach to “keeping up with the Jones” is not sustainable.

What is your favorite way to get in touch with nature?

Most Sundays my wife Diana and I take our two dogs and three or four of the cats—yes cats—on a hike around our property. We try to use this time to decompress from our hectic lives and reconnect with nature and each other.

We are thankful for all we have including our friends and family. We always end with a little affirmation, “It’s good to be us.”

Need a little instruction before heading out?

Participate in one of four upcoming guided hikes: Jan. 2, 10, 31 and Feb. 27. Each starts with a brief lesson from a park ranger.

Cross-country ski rentals are available at Kendall Lake when there are 6+ inches of snow. Cost is $15 per day or $7.50 for three hours. The park also offers scheduled workshops for beginner and intermediate skiers and on handling hills or preparing and protecting your skis. Workshops are $10 with your own equipment; $15 with a three-hour ski rental. (Skis for workshops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)

Rentals hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For specific hike and workshop times, go to nps.gov/cuva and click on “Schedule of Events.” Call 330-657-2752 to confirm snowfall before heading out to the Park.

What is your title at Heidelberg Distributing?

I’m a chain account manager. In other words, I call on the wine buyers for Acme Fresh Market, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Fishers Market, Target, Walgreens and Circle K, just to name a few.

How long have you been in the wine business?

I have been at Heidelberg Distributing for 15 years but in the business for 37 years. I started off working for Neidert Distributing, then The Hammer Company, later with The House of LaRose, and now Heidelberg Distributing Company.

How did you become interested in this field?

I’ve always liked wine and was very interested. As I’ll say, there’s art in every bottle.

Did you have any special training/education?

In the late ‘70s, I would go to the Monterey Wine Festival with Jim Neidert, and that was the start of educating my palate. After the wine festival, we would head to Alexander Valley, Napa Valley and

over to Sonoma, hunting out wineries to market in the Akron area. I also went to the California Wine Experience in San Francisco. It was put on by the restaurant association, so this was the start of pairing wines with foods. I’d say the many trips to California wine country has helped the most in my wine education. I also feel my travels to Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, New Zealand and Australia have been outstanding learning experiences. I have to thank Jim Neidert for bringing me into the wine business, George Hammer for all his wisdom, Tom and Joe LaRose for educating me, Russ Vernon for his knowledge and my current employers Al Vontz III and Vail Miller Sr. for believing in me.

What makes you an expert?

I feel all the years in the business and all the travel to different parts of the world has helped my education. Remember to savor the wine, not the words!

What’s your favorite wine?

Why? Another very hard question. There are so many nice wines being made. We have more than 6,000 wines in our warehouse. Here are a few wines that I have tasted and like very much: Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, Pine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Rombauer Chardonnay, Chalk Hill Chardonnay, Chateau St. Jean Sonoma Chardonnay, Clos De Los Siete, just to name a few. Drink what you like and like what you drink! Remember wine is an agricultural product, and because of the weather, the wine maker and the soil conditions, each and every year we have to start all over to find our favorite wines.

ith this article, I wanted to write about the oldest family-owned vineyard in the country—Wente Vineyards. In 1883, C.H. Wente settled in the Livermore region of California and founded the winery with 48 acres.

Today, the family owns more than 4,000 acres in the Livermore and Arroyo Seco appellations. Karl Wente, fifth generation, is now the winemaker and produces outstanding estate wines. This latest harvest was Wente Vineyard’s 126th vintage.

C.H. Wente was responsible for bringing the Chardonnay clone to California from France. Today, many of the great California wine producers are using the Wente Chardonnay clone. If you are ever close to Livermore, in addition to the winery there is a fine dining restaurant, a Greg Norman designed golf course and concerts at Wente Vineyards with outstanding entertainment.

percent sustainably farmed and is ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is aged for 14 months in American and French oak barrels. It is “deep red in color with mouth-filling flavors of black cherry and plum. Rich yet approachable tannins provides a long, smooth finish. It retails for $13.99.

The 2008 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay is also an estate-grown wine from the Livermore Valley. This Chardonnay is aged for seven months in oak barrels and then aged on the lees for another seven months in stainless steel. Karl Wente states “this wine has aromas and flavors of apple and tropical fruits, well balanced with oak overtones that will deliver a lingering, refreshing finish.” It also retails for $13.99.

Going Green! (on Your Plate)

ow in calories and loaded with vitamins and minerals, the dark leafy vegetables I refer to as “greens with a bite” and “tender, more milder flavored greens” (leaf, butter and romaine lettuces) are ready, especially at this time of year, to grace your plate and please your palate.

Greens with a bite range from earthy to peppery in flavor.

Often grouped together because of their texture, pronounced flavor and general use, these greens actually come from several vegetable families. Some are cabbage-like, while others are simply the tops of root vegetables such as beets and turnips.

To store, remove and discard damaged or wilted leaves.

Rinse greens well under cold running water, shaking off excess water and pat dry. Wrap in paper towels and refrigerate in a plastic bag. Use as soon as possible because leafy greens toughen as they age (don’t we all!).

In general, these tart greens are cooked before eating.

Immature, very tender home-grown greens are an exception to the rule, however; these can be eaten raw, as an assertive addition to tossed salads.

Here are seven spirited greens you’re most likely to find: * Bok Choy’s raw leaves have a hint of spicy hotness and the stalks are milder with a crunchy, slightly watery texture * Beet greens (still attached to beets or cut and bunched) have an earthy * Collards are full-bodied in flavor * Dandelion greens have an authoritative, slightly bitter taste * Kale has a sprightly flavor and holds its texture when cooked * Regular mustard greens pack a strong bite, while Oriental mustard greens are milder but still have a pleasant pungency

When shopping, look for fresh, tender, deep green leaves that are free of blemishes. Avoid bunches with thick, coarseveined leaves. Allow about 1/2 pound per person, remembering that greens cook down to 1/4 to 1/8 of their original volume.

To prepare the greens, tear out and discard tough stems and center ribs, then use leaves whole or cut or tear into bite sized pieces. I’ve included two of my favorite recipes, but for more inspiration season hot cooked greens with butter, oregano, lemon juice, wine vinegar, or crisply cooked and crumbled bacon. Cook greens Southern-style, with salt pork or smoked ham hocks. Add greens to soups and stews; top cooked greens with poached eggs for a light supper entrée; or add cooked greens to an omelet or frittata. Try tossing them, tender and raw, with a warm maple syrup and red wine vinegar dressing and slices of Granny Smith apple.

With a little knowledge, a sense of adventure and imagination, you’ll soon find that going green never tasted so good!

Vinaigrette 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 1 teaspoon honey 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt Salad 1 1/2 cups sliced white button mushrooms 2 to 3 cups lacinato or Tuscan kale, cleaned, discarding tough stems and center ribs, and torn into bite sized pieces 2 cups assorted baby greens, cleaned and torn into bite sized pieces 3 Tablespoons pine nuts, lightly toasted

1 For the vinaigrette: Combine the vinegar, paprika, garlic, honey, olive oil and salt in a mixing bowl, whisking until well combined.

2 For the salad: Heat the vinaigrette to boiling in a large

1 Cut any bok choy that are thicker than 3 inches in half lengthwise, leaving smaller ones whole.

2 Arrange as many of the bok choy on a steaming rack that will fit without crowding. Steam until stalks begin to turn translucent and are soft when pierced (about 4 to 5 minutes).

3 Lift out and plunge into cold water to stop cooking;

when cool, drain well and place in a shallow serving dish. Repeat with remaining bok choy.

4 Stir together oil, vinegar, mustard, soy, garlic, ginger and sugar. Pour over bok choy. Serves 4+.

How Fat is Akron?

When it comes to weight...as Ohio goes, so goes the nation.

Y

ou’ve probably heard the statistics.

Over the past 20 years, there’s been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The numbers in Ohio are pretty typical of the majority of the country: At least one in four of us is obese, meaning we have a body mass index, BMI, of 30 or greater.

Ohio is one of 32 states with that dubious honor, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2008, Colorado was the leanest state, with a prevalence of obesity less than 20 percent. Six Southern states fared the worst (Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia) with the prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30 percent.

So how does our area stack up? The numbers below, by county, are from the Office of Healthy Ohio, Ohio Department of Health, which does the studies and sends the data to the CDC. ...And What Should We Do about It? Obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, a variety of cardiovascular diseases and

certain types of cancer. The good news is that it’s a controllable risk factor. The bad news is that making lifestyle changes is not easy.

Portion control, managing stress and increasing activity to counterbalance the many modern conveniences that make physical activity less of a daily necessity are key, says Jay Carey, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Health. “It’s a lot about the choices we make in our own lives. We didn’t get into this shape overnight and we’re not going to get out of it overnight,” he adds.

Taking small but deliberate steps to change our lifestyle can make a meaningful difference in our long-term health.

Patients who lose just 10 percent of their baseline weight generally have improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipids (cholesterol), according to Everett Logue, PhD, director, Family Medicine Research Center at Summa Health System. His group is doing several small pilot studies in preparation for grant proposals to fund a larger study.

munication to support weight management; the other focuses on the relationship between inadequate sleep and obesity.

Burning most of your extra calories via exercise is almost impossible because nobody has the time, Dr. Logue says. If the goal is to lose a pound a week, that translates into losing 500 calories per day by some combination of calorie restriction and exercise.

The most successful weight losers use a combination of fewer calories in (1,800-2,000 per day) and more calories out (exercising an hour or two each day,) according to Dr. Logue. Portion control is important, but replacing higher calorie foods with fruits and vegetables is another way to accomplish the goal of lowering your daily intake, he adds.

Lohan encourages people to check with their primary care doctor before starting an exercise program. He also advises people to start slow and remember not to overdo it. The goal is to make healthy daily choices that lead to lasting lifestyle changes over time.

Portion Control

In the age of “supersizing” and “more is better,” many of us have an inaccurate view of how much of a good thing is enough. Experts at the National Institutes of Health advise keeping a set of measuring cups and spoons on hand while you’re training your eye to recognize what a true “single serving” looks like.

Here are some other visual clues to end what’s known in weight-loss circles as portion distortion:

In a sense, internists are like detectives.

These doctors of internal medicine piece together bits of information to detect patients’ problems - no matter how unusual or complex. Because they are often called on to solve diagnostic puzzles in which different illnesses play a part, internists are sometimes known as “doctors’ doctors.”

The focus of an internist is different from the family practitioner, who provides care for patients of all ages. An internist focuses on comprehensive adult health care and specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a broad range of adult illnesses. From common colds to diabetes, internists are specially trained to diagnose and treat short-term and long-term diseases.

“We teach patients how to take care for themselves and we teach other physicians/medical students how to do the same,” says Summa Physician Internist, Dr. Michael Rich.

After graduating from medical school, an internist completes one year of internship (many are under the false impression this is meaning of internist), followed by two years of residency in internal medicine. Internal medicine is also

In order to become a subspecialist, an internist must complete at least two years of additional training, which is referred to as a fellowship, in his or her chosen subspecialty before becoming eligible for subspecialty board certification.

Internists take time to develop long-term relationships with patients. This extensive understanding of each patient’s unique history and life outside of a medical concern enables internists to design a complete care plan, including lifestyle changes for a longer and healthier life.

“A good internist combines book knowledge with his or her knowledge of the patient,” Rich says. “For me, I have found immense joy in the academic nature of my profession as well as my relationships with my patients.”

Water: From Crisis A critical ingredient in Greater Akron’s growth

A

kron’s water supply has come a long way since its humble and somewhat hazardous beginnings at Wooster Avenue and Summit Lake in the early 1900s.

Now being drawn from more than 19,000 acres of land in the Upper Cuyahoga River watershed, stored in four reservoirs in Portage and Geauga counties in Northeast Ohio and operating well within Ohio Environmental Protection Agency standards, the current resources provide clean, fresh water to more than 290,000 people throughout Northeast Ohio.

While the water supply system has faced and conquered many challenges during its almost 100-year history (from water that was so polluted it made people sick to raging river fires), some of its biggest challenges lie ahead—securing its water against the threat of an outdated sewer system, badly in need of replacement, and battling increasing costs associated with stringent quality regulations and technology updates.

But before we look to the future for solutions to possible challenges, we must look to the past to see how Akron’s water supply became what it is today.

From River to Residence - the Quest to Bring Water into Akron After Akron’s creation as a city in 1825, both its population and industrial holdings began to grow exponentially. Its initial 200-strong residential base was upward of 42,000 people by 1900 and with the population growth came a demand for more water.

While many homes had cisterns or private wells drilled to meet their water needs, as well a number of private water supply companies who distributed water to residents and businesses, the biggest call came for increased water supply and access came from the industrial sector.

Fires in the industrial buildings and factories of Akron were often devastating, taking with them whole businesses, livelihoods and surrounding properties.

On March 11, 1869, the East Market Street fire burned down all the buildings between High and Main streets. Both industry leaders and the greater public demanded water reservoirs to help battle the blazes.

It wasn’t until 1880, however, when consulting engineers group M.S. Frost and other local dignitaries negotiated a deal with the city of Akron to become the city’s sole water provider, that headway was made into creating a solid and reliable water supply for both city businesses and residents.

Later, M.S. Frost sold its rights to the city water deal to the privately owned Akron Water Works Company, which established its first supply off Wooster Avenue (now V. Odom Boulevard) in 1881.

Akron continued to grow in leaps and bounds, gaining some 25,000 extra residents between 1870 and 1900. Akron Water Works expanded its water-drilling and pumping operation into Manning’s Pond and Summit Lake in the now-Lakemore region. Despite increasing demand, the quality and quantity of Akron Water Works’ product was decreasing. Fires continued to rage downtown, taking casualties such as City Hall and Buchtel College, and the polluted waters of Summit Lake saw a less than superior product being produced by an already overtaxed Akron Water Works Company.

Something had to be done.

A Plan to Solve Akron’s Water Problem The Akron Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1907 with one primary concern—an efficient and plentiful water supply in Akron. Serving as the chamber’s first president, Charles Beebe Raymond led the charge to find a longterm solution to Akron’s water problem.

In late 1910, F.A. Barbour and E.G. Raymond, independent consultants from Columbus, Ohio, were hired to conduct a study to find a more efficient and safe

to Cleanliness source of water for Akron. After more than a year of analysis and investigation, their report identified the upper reaches of the Cuyahoga River as Akron’s best bet water-wise.

Before the report’s release, Akron Mayor William Sawyer and Service Director John Gauthier began quietly buying land surrounding the Upper Cuyahoga region, obtaining some 2,000 acres in the Cuyahoga River Watershed to be used as a new water supply system.

After decades of water problems, city officials wanted absolute control of the water system. On May 17, 1911, the state passed legislation giving Akron the right to “divert and use forever” the waters of the Tuscarawas River, the Big Cuyahoga River and the Little Cuyahoga River, and further granted the city permission to build reservoirs on any of these rivers.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce engaged in its own battle, attempting to “buy out” Akron Water Works and their long-term water supply contract. After much debate, on Dec. 5, 1911, Akron voters approved the purchase of Akron Water Works and its water supply contract for $815,000.

In 1913, construction began for Akron’s new water supply along the Upper Cuyahoga.

What of Water Today?

Water Alone is Not to Blame

The Lake Rockwell Water Purification Plant was put into public use in August of 1915, and has since become the primary supplier of the City of Akron’s water.

While many of Akron’s early water problems stemmed from insufficient supply, pollution also became a large concern, especially once the Upper Cuyahoga was identified as a potential water source for both personal and industrial use.

In 1910, Akron was issued a court order, demanding it cease its sewer-dumping practices in the Lower Cuyahoga, downstream of the city. At the same time plans were being developed for an adequate and efficient water supply plant, so too were plans being developed for adequate sewer maintenance plants, the first of which was built in 1916.

Akron’s Wastewater Plant found a permanent home in 1928, with its construction at Botzum. It is now known as Akron’s Water Pollution Control Division.

Today, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District maintains much of the “effective wastewater and stormwater management” for Northeast Ohio, according to its Web site, which allows for both health and environmental protection of the water supply.

Additionally, the Water Pollution Control Division on Akron-Peninsula Road treats more than 96 square miles of waste water, providing treatment services for more than 330,000 people.

But as the system gets older, and its ability to maintain and control sewage treatment is further jeopardized, a more long-term solution will need to be put in place.

Currently, the Water Supply Division is operating well within the confines of Ohio EPA regulations regarding water quality, especially with its low turbidity levels (turbidity being a measurement of cloudiness in water). Additionally, new technologies and EPA testing for all staff employed by the Water Supply Division have allowed them to overcome many of the challenges facing water purification and supply maintenance in the 21st century, including identifying “nonpoint” (or off-site) sources of pollution, such as home-based septic tank failures, increased chemical run-off from various facilities using insecticides, and soil erosion.

But the battle rages on, Coy says. “Efforts to protect raw water [or untreated water that has yet to go through the water supply’s cleansing and filtration process] and to meet those legal requirements are becoming more difficult and more expensive,” he explains.

Water supply maintenance extends beyond merely ensuring its high quality standard. Security concerns and safeguards are paramount, especially in a post-Sept. 11 society.

Coy says some community members are more sensitive to taste and odor changes in the water, and those people have been identified and regularly update the Water Supply Division if they sense a change in water quality.

Also, residents around various pump stations will call the Water Supply Division if they see suspicious activity around the pumps, or notice people they don’t think should be there.

Within the facility, extensive surveillance, lighting and fences surround the reservoirs, and Watershed Rangers work with local authorities to keep the water safe, and to ensure that plant and water sources are not disturbed.

Coy says a lot of people don’t understand the restrictions, especially since much of the owned land is publicly held. “A lot of the land is public, but close to the plant it’s private,” Coy explains. “We have had some instances of trespassing, and we have all become very aware of the potential threat.”

What Lies in Store?

Bronowski says about 50 percent of money spent by the Water Supply Division is associated with chemicals, and the amount is highly affected when chemical costs and gas prices increase. The changing economy and use of technology has also changed the employee make-up of the division, which had more than 100 employees in the 1990s, and now employs a little more than 30 staff members.

“We had about a 70 percent drop [in staff] and we are putting out a better water quality than we’ve ever had,” Bronowski says. “It’s a testament to the individuals who work here-their work ethic, the employees we have.”

Additionally, the bottled water industry has done a lot to decrease demand for water from residents, something Bronowski says is worrisome. “A good portion of the demand [the Water Supply Division] had has been lost because people have been buying bottled water,” he says. However, he firmly believes water from a home faucet is a superior product because, unlike bottled water, it contains essential nutrients (like fluoride) that promote dental health, and is subject to a quick usage turnover rate to ensure the overall safety and cleanliness of the water.

When asked what challenges the Water Supply Division foresees as being the toughest to tackle in the future, Bronowski explains there are two main concerns: 1) the Ohio EPA regulations are becoming more stringent in terms of quality, and 2) the costs associated with meeting those regulations are growing every day.

“We need to improve public perception of where the water comes from,” Coy says. And, at a current production rate of 35 million gallons of water daily, with the ability to produce 70 million gallons daily, concerns stem not from produced quantity, but from what it takes to maintain water quality.

Tours of the Water Supply Division are offered to any interested parties, and Coy says he personally reaches put to groups who are interested in finding out more about the Akron water supply.

hen Jay and Kim Gaebelein relocated from Dayton to Northeast Ohio in 2006, they scoured the housing market but could not find a home for sale that met their needs. As a result, they opted for a custom build, which proved to be the ideal opportunity to incorporate some of the more innovative features that piqued their curiosity.

While Jay had lofty ambitions that included a metal roof, an insulated basement floor and radiant floor heating throughout the home, it quickly became clear that to incorporate all their dream features would come at a higher price than they were willing to spend. Instead they chose a limited number of features to incorporate from the start, and left room to retrofit other areas in the future.

“Whenever you build, you are always making choices about what items you must have and what you would like to have,” Kim says. “Our choices were focused on how we could build a cozy, inviting home that would sip energy rather than gulp it.”

A spacious kitchen, raised garden beds and a fire pit in the backyard, plus etched glass on the kitchen pantry door are just some of the special features in the Gaebelein home.

Before beginning construction on their home in 2007, the Gaebeleins dedicated nearly four years to research and planning while they lived in a rental property. They talked to draftsmen and looked at house plans, taking features from several different houses. The couple also gathered a lot of ideas from one of Jay’s favorite publications, Smart HomeOwner, which provides solutions for efficient, eco-friendly homes. They

compiled all their ideas into a set of binders that served as a guide throughout the building process.

Items such as dual flush toilets, CFL light bulbs and an electric water heater add to the home’s efficiency.

The result is a 6,400-square-foot home that feels very intimate while still providing plenty of living space and privacy. The ranch-style home has an open floor plan going from the living room into the kitchen. Directly off the kitchen is a half-bath, a laundry room, a master suite and stairs to the finished basement. On either side of the front entry way is a dining room and a study. A long hall leads to their 5-year-old daughter’s room, which includes a full bathroom.

That end of the house also features a guest room complete with a Jackand-Jill bathroom that leads into a private sitting area for guests. This space works great, especially when Kay’s parents visit from Arizona.

The guest room also has a sliding door that opens up to the backyard and patio.

One of their top priorities was to find a solid builder. They chose Dominic Zinicola from Republic Construction Consultants, and are pleased with their choice. Although many of the proposed concepts were new to the firm, and they were nervous to work with new materials, the team was open to expanding its outlook.

The Gaebeleins also hired an energy consultant who helped with the planning process and who checks in with the family periodically. Among the home’s eco-friendly and energy efficient features are a geothermal system with supplemental resistance heat; an energy recovery ventilator; Icycene® open cell foam insulation in the walls, basement and attic; 1-inch insulated foam board on the outside walls and under basement slab; dual flush pressure assist low-flow toilets; CFL light bulbs; sun tunnel skylights; and Lo-E4 Andersen casement windows, just to name a few.

In addition, the house has a ThermaTru™ fiberglass exterior doors as well as Energy Star appliances and ceiling fans. The living room features an efficient, wood-burning QuadraFire fireplace, which can heat up to 3,500 square feet. Insulated shades also provide additional temperature control.

Jay tracked the family’s energy consumption in the new home from 2008-2009 and compared it to that of the 2,500-square-foot rental they lived in from 2007-2008. At the rental, the family used a total of 136.55 MMBtu over a one-year period. In the new home, that number dropped to 82 MMBTU. “People don’t realize that you can make a difference and it doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult,” Kim explains.

Kim and Jay have even passed their eco-friendly outlook onto their daughter, Jenna. One morning, when Jenna awoke to see the Christmas lights in her room were still on from the night before, she politely informed her parents that they’d been “energy hogs.”

f you’ve ever watched an episode of TLC’s “What Not to Wear” and wished to have professional fashion consultants at your disposal, you’re in luck. While they may not have the notoriety of Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, Susan Luc and Betsy Tabatcher do have the know-how to revamp your wardrobe and put together fashion-forward outfits for clients from age 13 to 90.

The business is called Shop Your Closet, and Luc and Tabatcher do just that. They provide style consulting and wardrobe planning based on what’s already in your closet.

“We really like to start with what you have,” Tabatcher says. “We’re not in your closet every day, so we see things you wouldn’t think of.”

From there, they create a shopping list of those must-have items that will complete your looks. Clients can choose to shop solo, or have Luc and Tabatcher along for additional guidance. When the process is complete, each client receives a wardrobe plan that includes a list of outfits and styling tips along with space to mark notes

about specific occasions and events to plan for. For instance, before going on vacation someone might note which outfits she wants to take. There’s even a spot to organize and save magazine clippings of eye-catching outfits.

One of the biggest things people need to get away from, Luc says, is the idea that every part of an outfit needs to match. “No more matching,” she adds, “it’s putting pieces together.”

Both women used to work in retail and have experience helping people—especially women—piece together outfits and select flattering items. They also spend a lot of time researching fashion online and in magazines, following the trends.

While many small businesses have struggled lately, in some ways the difficult economy has helped this business. Rather than purchase an entirely new wardrobe, clients are encouraged to utilize what they already have. Plus, the professional advice is affordable, with an in-home closet consultation priced at $75/hour, and personal shopping at an additional $25/hour.

The average session takes about 2-3 hours (not including shopping time), but the experience varies depending on the client.

And you can customize your experience to fit your needs or budget. In the end, a client might spend the same amount as they would for one or two new outfits, but instead they’d have dozens of looks to choose from.

“Really, it’s just about planning,” Tabatcher explains.

Save the Date: May 22, 2010 Preparing for the day that’s been 10 years in the making

I

met my fiancé, Colin, in high school. By the time he proposed in October 2008, we had already been dating more than eight years, and I had often dreamed about our wedding day. I even knew when it would be, because for years we joked that we would wed on the 10-year anniversary of when we became a couple.

No, I didn’t have a thick binder filled with all the details of how our wedding would be. I’ve known those types of girls, and I’m not one of them. But I thought I had a pretty good idea of the types of things I liked. Still, once the engagement became real, and people started bombarding me with questions—”Where are you getting married? What kind of dress will you wear?

What colors? Who is in your bridal party?”—I was completely overwhelmed. Realistically, the hard part was over. I found the perfect guy (for me) and was 100 percent sure I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. The rest should be easy, right? Maybe for some people.

First things first Because Colin and I knew exactly what date we wanted to get married, and we weren’t willing to budge on that, we wanted to get our ceremony and reception site booked right away. Our goal was to find somewhere we could have an outdoor ceremony followed by an indoor reception at the same location.

It would eliminate unnecessary travel, and our guests wouldn’t have to figure out how to fill in an odd gap of time between the ceremony and reception.

We looked at a few places around town, and finally decided on what we thought would be the perfect spot. By this time, it was early December 2008, and the location wasn’t accepting 2010 reservations until 2009. We were told that since Jan. 1 was a holiday, the soonest we could pay a deposit to reserve the site would be Friday, Jan. 2. After making sure we had the deposit money ready, I called to reserve the spot on the morning of Monday, Jan. 5 (the place was closed on the weekends). You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that “Beth” had already reserved the space for our same wedding date.

At 18 months before the wedding date, I thought I was ahead of schedule. How could there be another bride out there more OCD than me? public golf course with a recently renovated banquet room. It has large windows that let in tons of natural light, and there’s easy access to the patio if guests want some air.

Dress shopping To be upfront, I’m horrible at making decisions. When I’m going to buy something (especially something that costs a lot of money), I need to know without a doubt that it’s what I want. I spend hours researching products and comparing prices, even for the smallest purchase.

You can imagine, then, what an ordeal the wedding dress shopping experience could have become.

A little over six months after we got engaged, I went to the first shop with a file folder of dress styles I had pulled from the dozens of bridal magazines I spent months poring over. For once, I had a very clear image of what I wanted.

I wanted something simple with straps and a deep-V neckline.

While I tried on many styles that fit that description, I didn’t rule anything out. I agreed to try on any dress my mom, my sister, my bridesmaids and the store associate suggested. (As a joke, someone put the frilliest, poofiest dress in the bunch, just to see my reaction. For the record, I tried it on graciously and even let them all see me in it, though I firmly ruled that one out.) I approached the situation with the outlook that there’s no harm in trying, and often dresses look much better on a body than they do on a hanger.

Thank God I did.

It quickly became clear that the dress I thought would be the most flattering didn’t really flatter me at all. My top two favorites ended up being strapless dresses that I never would have picked had I not

tried them on. I had an inkling which one I liked best, but in fear of making too rash a decision, I decided to think about it.

For me, that meant going home and spending hours looking through photos and videos of myself in the various dresses, and then hours more obsessively asking everyone what they thought. I even solicited Colin’s opinion, but he refused.

Knowing that I likely wouldn’t drop the subject until a decision was made, my friend suggested we check out another dress shop the next day.

We went through the same scenario, frantically grabbing any and every dress we could find. Right before we went to the dressing room, my friend grabbed one last dress and asked, “What about this one?” I thought it might be the same as another in the pile, but said “Why not,” just in case it was different.

A few dresses into the process, nothing was working. The associate then pointed out the last dress we had grabbed and suggested I try that one. She left the room so my friend could help me into the dress, and once it was on we both instantly realized it was my favorite dress from the day before.

We were so giddy at the revelation that we could barely contain ourselves, but we opened the door to get everyone else’s opinion. The minute I locked eyes with my sister, I knew she realized it was the same dress. But you could tell my mom had no idea! She got very excited, though, and just shook her head saying, “That’s the one.” We left the shop and explained the coincidence to my mom in the car.

That was just the sign I needed. I had found my dress.

Cuisine And Atmosphere So Memorable...

Our ceremony/reception site has a chef on staff, so that determined our caterer.

From the beginning, we knew we didn’t want conventional wedding food, so we’re opting for a pasta bar and a taco bar. Most people love Italian food, and our first date was at a Mexican restaurant, so it fits perfectly. The chef has even agreed to make Colin’s corn salsa recipe!

We already have a favorite local bakery and florist, so there was no question where to go for cake and flowers.

Because it’s a spring wedding and I love Gerbera daisies, we’ll definitely incorporate them in the bouquets and when decorating the cake. Two more items checked off my to-do list.

For me, 2009 was a year full of (other people’s) weddings, which turned out beneficial because it gave me a chance to get ideas and see vendors in action.

In July, I had the privilege of being a bridesmaid for a close friend (who will also be a bridesmaid in my wedding), and her DJ did such a fantastic job that Colin and I knew we had to book him for our wedding. He was energetic, really engaged the crowd and played a great music selection. I’ve been to so many weddings where couples were disappointed with their DJ, so it was comforting to be able to see how ours worked ahead of time.

I recently booked our ceremony musicians (a violinist and cellist) as well. And now that we have our guest list finalized, it’s time to secure chair rentals and order the invitations. Most of the major decisions have been made, and vendors secured. More than anything, I’m really excited for Colin and I to be married and to celebrate the occasion with our closest family and friends. At just six months until the big day, I’m feeling pretty stress-free. Here’s hoping I’m still this calm come May...

t’s no secret that the average wedding utilizes many resources, and even the best earth-friendly efforts will likely result in a great deal of waste. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize a wedding’s impact without resorting to taboo e-mail invites.

Carrie not only planned her Oct. 3 wedding, but she also planned the seventh annual Road Runner Akron Marathon, which took place just one week before her big day. She has some wise advice for upcoming brides including her sister, Lynne.

First and most important don’t lose sight of the true meaning of a wedding. A wedding is a marriage between you and the one you love, and in the end that’s all that truly matters. There will be some mishaps along the way and you will wish you had eloped at some point, but when that day is here and you walk down the aisle, nothing else matters.

Don’t sweat the small things. Talk with your groom to be and decide what are the five most important things to you and execute them.

Everything else is a bonus. Start planning early, and make a realistic checklist of things you need to do weekly so you don’t overwhelm yourself. Ask for help. If you have a creative friend, or in my case sisters, give them a job. I could not have done this without the help of my family and friends.

• Select invitations printed on postconsumer recycled paper, skip the formal inner envelope.

• Opt for china dishes and flatware, rather than disposable.

• Skip place cards, which just add to paper waste, or find a more unique way to signify assigned seating that fits your wedding theme.

• Keep things simple. If it’s not necessary, don’t buy it.

Akron Life & Leisure account executive Megan Dyer was one of those lucky brides whose groom was actively involved in the wedding planning process. Her husband, Steve, provides a few tips from the groom’s perspective.

Establish some direction upfront and share your goals. Megan and I established our tasks and I took care of certain things that I felt I would be capable of doing, such as the bar and cocktails, providing music, and who would cater the meal for our guests. This freed up time for my wife to concentrate on things she would really enjoy such as in decor, theme, flowers, dress and the little details.

Use local places that are significant to you. We both worked at West Point Market and met there, so we used them to make our wedding cake. It made the process of picking out a cake more special. Also, my mom made her super-famous chocolate chunk cookies for the reception.

We also used a florist that worked from her home and gave Megan very personal service.

My groomsmen and I purchased black suits instead of renting tuxes.

Jos. A Banks was having a great sale at the time, so we were able to purchase quality suits. We all ended up keeping our own shirt, tie and suit.

Why rent for one day when you can keep a nice suit for many more occasions, work and future events?

Megan and I communicated well as we went along. This helped us refrain from arguments (there were still a few) but we accomplished everything in a relatively short time.

There was no pressing issue for us to get married quickly. We were just ready. We planned our wedding all within six months from engagement to the official day.

Kate planned her Ohio wedding long-distance from Toronto, and she has a lot of advice for brides-tobe. Some of her top tips include: Negotiate. Times are tough and if you ask for a fair discount, you will very often get it. Do not be embarrassed. Sometimes when vendors are told you are planning a wedding, the rates get bumped up. I would call and say it is for a party, or if I did say wedding, I would politely ask for a discount. Many times I paid upfront and was given a good chunk off.

Former Akron Jewish Center Looking back on their first communal home.

ich or poor...orthodox, conservative or reform... Zionist or non-Zionist, politically conservative or liberal, Akron’s first Jewish Center on Balch Street was intended to be a unifying force in the community.

“We wanted to build an institution which would be the home of all of our people regardless... in the belief that the heritage that binds us together is of much more importance...than the differences that exist between us,” the center’s first president Charles Schwartz was quoted as saying.

Created to include an athletic facility and social/cultural gathering place for Jewish families and especially for their children, the center was completed in 1929.

There were basketball games, swimming classes, boxing tournaments, dances, pageants, plays, concerts, Jewish organization and club meetings, plus classes in art, Americanization and English, according to Helga Eugenie Kaplan, who wrote about the Center in her 1979 doctoral dissertation, “Century of Adjustment: A History of the Akron Jewish Community: 1865-1975.” Her scholarly work was recently digitized by the Akron-Summit County Public Library and is available online.

Because of the stock market crash in October of ‘29 and the Great Depression that followed, the center faced near financial disaster on more than one occasion in the 1930s.

At one point, $7,000 had to be raised in a 24-hour period to avoid foreclosure.

Each time money was needed, donors rose to the occasion, banding together to keep the center afloat. Their support enabled the building to be paid for in full and celebrated at mortgage-burning festivities in the early ‘40s.

During World War II, the center hosted scrap collection drives, participated in USO activities and became a Civilian Defense Training Station.

For more than 25 years, the center was home to the prestigious Akron Civic Forum which brought speakers like Bertrand Russell, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt to town.

“Whether due to programming, increased prosperity or renewed commitment, Center membership went up...from 1,005 in 1940 to 1,632 in 1946,” Kaplain wrote. That’s the year of this charming photograph from the Schecht-May wedding.

The Akron Jewish Center moved to its new location on White Pond Drive in 1973 and was renamed the Jerry Shaw Jewish Community Center. The City of Akron currently operates a fitness center in the old Balch Street location.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
