Do you marvel at the ability of younger people to type seemingly 100 words a minute while only using their thumbs on a miniature keyboard that isn’t even real? >> Who would have thought that the opposable thumb would be used to do more than hang onto tree branches or throw a baseball? My high school typing teacher would have been horrified, or maybe not. She taught us to touch type, sitting very erect with our fingers “poised” over the keys which were to be struck with considerable force because the typewriters we had in my class were manual. >> There has been a subtle change going on in our language, if you haven’t noticed. For instance, the other day I was quite startled to hear someone respond to my “Thank you” with a “You’re Welcome.” I’ve become accustomed to the usual “No Problem,” which has become the normal response to “Thank You.” I don’t know when that changed, but I think my grandchildren and their generation were the ones to have changed the response. Probably a West Coast thing. >> I’ve also noticed the pronunciation of “student” and words with “dent” at the end has changed. Until my grandchildren, the emphasis was on the first syllable, as in “STU-dent”; now, the emphasis has changed to the second syllable, as in “stu-DENT.” Listen for yourself. >> I’ve noticed, as I read the obituaries every morning in the newspaper, that more and more people are including their dogs in their remembrances. Just the other day, Danny W. Rollins, of Barberton, passed away, and the first remembrance was “Danny loved his dog Scooter.” Now Danny didn’t write that, but the person who did knew that his first love was for his dog. Can’t say as I blame him. >> I got an email from Carson Barnes recently that read: “Dear Mr. Baker: With all due respects to you and the readers of your magazine, akronlife, Mr. Troppe is an entrepreneur, but not a cool cat. He seems to affiliate himself with people who want to prosper from the commercial end of the music, but hardly sincere enthusiasts of the art that I’ve sacrificed to play all of my life; simply put, he’s a phony. I’m a third-generation Akronite who’s tired of the elitism that you and your crew are espousing. We don’t need the gentrification that Mr. Troppe and those like him are trying to usher in here.

I’d like to see more information about the empowerment of the working class and the sons and daughters of the rubber workers who made this town what it is and was.

Dear Mr. Barnes: Thank you for your response to my column about Tony Troppe’s new jazz club, BluJazz+.

I am puzzled that you are, if not overjoyed, then at least happy that a new local jazz club has opened up. Especially since it features opportunities for local talent (yourself included) to showcase alongside established practitioners of the art of jazz. And if it weren’t for entrepreneurs like Troppe and me, you wouldn’t have a jazz club to go to or a magazine that cares enough about the arts to feature such fare.

However, your idea about providing more information about the empowerment of the working class has given our editorial staff a great story idea. Local AFP Chamberlin Scholarship Winner The North Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has chosen Sara M. Stone as their Chamberlin Scholarship Winner. Putting It into Perspective If you read my column last month, you learned my grand plan to get healthy in 2015.

I had scheduled my first session with my health coach and asked AkronLife readers to hold me accountable for my actions. Not long after I wrote that, I got a serious case of the flu — so serious, in fact, that my husband took me to the ER one morning because I was so dehydrated and required two IVs and nausea meds.

As horrible as I felt in the hospital — and once I realized it wasn’t as serious as my Internet searches had made it seem — I was able to look around at the other patients and gain some insight. At one point, they wheeled me to another wing for a CT scan and parked me in a tiny room until the technician was ready for me. I was a little surprised when someone from the hospital’s transportation services squeezed another patient into the room next to me.

He was on his back, wearing a neck brace, with cuts and bruises all over his face. In what I’m guessing was post-trauma delirium (or the pain meds talking), he told me all about the car accident he had just survived. His car had slid into a median, and it was totaled. In the confusion, he had left his cell phone in the car and — because he’s of a generation who relies on speed dial — he didn’t know the phone number of the friend whose house he had just left. When I mentioned that he was lucky to be alive, he shrugged and seemed more worried about his phone.

After my scan, they wheeled me back to the tiny room, where my original roomie had been replaced by a white-haired lady.

Every minute or so, she would ask me what was taking transportation services so long to take her back to her room. Never mind the fact that nurses kept popping in to check on her, make sure she had warm blankets and reassure her that help was on the way. Again, it gave me something to think about.

If you’re reading this issue of AkronLife in the warmth of your home, I’d say you’re pretty lucky. In talking with Joe May, founder of The Peter Maurin Center of Akron, for this month’s The Interview, my eyes have been opened to the state of homelessness in our community. We’re lucky — as a city — to have a safe place for our marginalized citizens to warm their bodies, fill their stomachs and nourish their souls. So,

when you’re complaining about your lost cell phone or having to wait a few minutes for someone to care for you, just think about it: Some people in Akron don’t have anything at all. >> I would be remiss if I didn’t mention two recent losses in our community. They aren’t “to the Great Beyond” kind-of losses, but losses nonetheless.

• In December 2014, we featured a one-on-one with Josh McManus, the Akron program director of the Knight Foundation. Although he was only in Akron for six months, he’s already accepted another job and returned to Detroit.

Now, I don’t know the details of his departure, but I do know that the foundation’s interim program director, Kyle Kutuchief, is an excellent choice.

Kyle is a hometown guy with a vested interest in our community. He understands Akron, having worked with the Austen BioInnovation Institute, Torchbearers, Downtown Akron Partnership and other local groups (and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be caught dead in bright yellow pants.) We’re behind you, Kyle. Make us proud.

• As of press time, our heads were still reeling with breaking news about Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver; we interviewed him in our June 2013 issue. Earlier this week, he was suspended from the force for two weeks for “gender discrimination issues.” Yesterday, he announced a hiatus from his WNIR radio show, and then last night, he allegedly cleaned out his office and returned his department-issued cruiser, as part of his resignation. He cites health issues as the reason for his resignation.

Only time (and the courts) will tell what happens to this “Internet sensation” and his legacy. We just know that whoever replaces him at the BPD has some mighty large shoes to fill.

Maybe even larger than we’ll ever know.

I just lit a fire.

I’ve got a technique for starting the tinder, one that precariously balances paper, twigs and logs with the distribution of our little stove’s available oxygen, and I don’t mind telling you it only works about half the time.

It was a little over a year ago when, attempting to convince a green, waterlogged tree root to miraculously combust in our ceramic, backyard chiminea, my wife looked at me from across our suburban patio and said, “We need to learn how to start fires better.”

You see, as much joy as the multisensory aesthetics of an open flame brings me — and it does, from the cloying smell of wood smoke to the much-lauded “crackle” of a nicelyburning log to, of course, the balletic dance of orange-yellow flames as they practice their chaotic choreography — fire has become less a tangential enjoyment than critical necessity in the life of myself and my family. While our 1860s farmhouse is, on paper, warmed by a dying heat pump through ductwork that doesn’t extend to our kitchen or dining room, our wood stove, powered by fallen trees in our four acres of wooded slopes, is the most efficient, effective way to keep frost from our noses when the temperature plunges.

Fire is a timeworn favorite of the metaphor-prone. It’s the hormone-fueled attraction between young lovers, the unbending will of a notably driven individual, the presence and effects of an anger displayed

rather than hidden. But, on a subzero day, when the polar vortex whips arctic winds through each and every unsealed seam of my house, I’m more concerned with what fire is than what it’s like: Fire is light, and fire is warmth — two necessary elements Mother Nature delights in withholding during winter’s dark, cold days.

When I rise on a sunless winter morning and drag my half-hibernating body downstairs to the cold pit of our common living area, my first chore is always the same — februar y 2015

to sit cross-legged before the wood stove, hopefully still slightly warm from the overnight fire, and coax a flame into existence.

Ask me a question at this time of day, and you’ll receive a mealy-mouthed mumble in response, and I possess few-to-none of the abilities the rest of my day will require of me, but creating warmth to push off the blanket of cold that’s settled over the room isn’t like brushing my teeth or writing articles — fire is survival.

I can’t imagine what life was like for our

primitive ancestors before that hirsute chosen one struck two stones together (or whatever — I prefer Diamond-brand matches) and brought the cataclysmic force of flame under the caveman and -woman’s control. But I might understand what the stoop-shouldered prehumans felt when they lit their first cave fire and reveled in the glowing warmth of its dancing flames, a feeling dimly echoed in my chest when piled kindling catches and heat rushes from the stove’s open door, replacing the chill against my skin with a deep, welcome comfort.

And there’s another facet of heating with fire that strikes me as poignant: So long as I or someone in my house is mindful enough to toss a log into the stove every hour or so, maybe poke around at the embers now and again, the flame’s light and warmth will continue to push the cold from our house, room by room, until at some hour in the dead of night, when no one’s conscious to stoke the dying flame, glowing embers will dim, heat will leech from cast iron, and cold will slip into the room again, covering everything with its discomforting chill.

This, for me, is a more subtle metaphor, this dying of the untended flame.

Modern life is rife with distractions vying for our attention, often-awesome things that improve our quality of life or, at the very least, make us smile for a minute. Books, video games, TV shows and movies, social media feeds and YouTube playlists — I love all of these things and wouldn’t insult you, reader, by acting above the simple pleasure of a mediocre sitcom. But I must never confuse these creature comforts with the flames in my life — my marriage and family, skills in areas that enrich me as a person and contributing member of society. Cat videos are truly wonderful, but too many cat videos? One must remember to regularly rise to put another log on the fire.

Jane Ann Turzillo has had many jobs over the years but she’s always been a storyteller.

Turzillo’s newest book, “Ohio Train Disasters,” joins her two other books published by The History Press: “Murder and Mayhem on Ohio’s Rails” and “Wicked Women of Northeast Ohio.” She’s written two books for Arcadia Publishing: one on Bath Township and one on Hudson, and she also has a website, www.janeturzillo.com, and a blog, darkheartedwomen.wordpress.com.

Delving into the dark side of local history, you’d think Turzillo is a woman who lives on the edge but she says she has a quiet, sedate life in Akron with her dog.

Born in Detroit, she became fascinated with history as a child. Her grandmother would take her and her sister to a cemetery where townspeople would often visit and have picnics.

“She would take us around to the graves, and she would tell us the story of the town from the tombstones of the people who were buried there, and of course, a lot of them were her family,” she says.

Turzillo’s family later moved to Northeast Ohio, where she attended Revere High School and received degrees from The University of Akron in criminal justice and mass media communication. She began her writing career as a police reporter for a small newspaper, and then she and four others broke away from that publication to start the West Side Leader.

“Because I had the degree, I did all the police and fire news for about six or eight years,” she says. “I rode with the Fairlawn police quite a bit and learned so much from them. It’s all about human nature. … I consider myself a storyteller, and I like to tell stories of people and do the research.”

When she wrote the Arcadia book about Bath Township, she was intrigued by the stories of Northeast Ohio’s first settlers and felt compelled to share their tragedies and triumphs.

“At one time, Ohio was the West,” she says.

“When you stop to think about how they came over the mountains in Pennsylvania and, against all odds, survived freezing cold, terrible storms and sickness. They just were heroic people.”

In her new book, “Ohio Train Disasters,” Turzillo researched state railroad tragedies and focused on the victims and the heroes. “They were in my own backyard. That’s what drew me to them,” she says.

Turzillo keeps a file of interesting local news stories that eventually find their way into one of her books. She says ideas come from newspapers, from people she meets at book signings and from her friend, Gwen Mayer, an archivist at the Hudson Library.

“Sometimes I’ll bounce something off of her, and I’ll go to research it, and then I’ll find something else interesting and say, ‘I’ll save that for another time,’” she says. “I’ll get an idea and then talk about it with my editor.

We’ll flesh it out and go from there.”

Although Turzillo once wrote a book in a period of four months, she prefers to have a year to write so she can relish the process.

“The research takes quite a bit of time, and that’s the fun. The writing is time-consuming,” she says. “I have to write. I really can’t imagine what else I would do.”

Hitting the Road Last year, Turzillo traveled the highways of Ohio doing 26 book signings and presentations, and her 2015 calendar is starting to fill up. Fans can find her this spring at the Tuscarawas County Public Library in New Philadelphia and the Grafton-Midview Public Library. She also hopes to participate in the Ohioana Book Festival in Columbus, Author Alley in Shaker Heights and Buckeye Book Fair in Wooster.

For Joe May, sharing his talents comes naturally.

When May retired in 1998 after nearly 40 years with Roadway Express, he took his executive leadership skills to one of our city’s poorest residential areas.

Born in Akron, May had graduated from St. Vincent High School and Kent State, and served two years active duty and four years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He met his wife, Helen, on a blind date, and they were married in 1960 and raised three children.

Not long after his retirement, May served on the board of The Catholic Worker of Akron, restoring three homes to become houses of hospitality for the homeless. During that time, the board imagined opening a “soup kitchen,” similar to the one that writer Peter Maurin had inspired activist Dorothy Day to create during the Great Depression in New York City.

To meet the needs of the growing number of homeless and marginalized citizens in the Greater Akron area, May suggested the board open a “day drop-in center.” The organization bought and restored a long-vacant bar and grill, and opened The Peter Maurin Center at 1096 S. Main St. in 2006.

Two months ago, The Peter Maurin Center expanded next door. The original facility continues to provide the homeless with three hot meals a week, and the new community center offers haircuts, showers, medical and dental services, and a spot where marginalized adults can obtain a bicycle or have their current one repaired.

What is the true state of homelessness in Summit County?

JM: The state of homelessness in Summit County is complex.

Perhaps it can best be described in segments, which is consistent with most cities across the country.

Most noticeable are the homeless the public sees on the city streets: some with signage seeking assistance; some staying warm during the day in libraries and bus stations; some riding bikes or walking to and from food sources; and some standing outside a temporaryemployment office.

Much less noticeable are the tented homeless who take up residence in vacant wooded areas. For the most part, they are marginal survivalist. Some become adept at caring for themselves; others are in desperate need of help to survive — particularly in the dead of winter.

Others among the less noticeable are the squatters. These homeless move about finding shelter in vacant houses or commercial buildings.

Transient homeless (versus long-term, or chronic) rent day-to-day or week-to-week. On any given day, they face eviction. Some are found sleeping in their car while seeking their next shelter.

If you want numbers, the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development required a biannual point-in-time homeless count in order for Continuums of Care, located by county, to be eligible for Federal funding.

The “Point-in-Time” survey conducted in 2010 indicated there were approximately 875 homeless. From the experience of those working directly with homeless, the number in the Greater Akron area is estimated at more than 1,100 people and more than 100 tented citizens. To our knowledge, this has not been conducted in the last two or three years in Summit County.

When it comes to our community’s homeless, what can we as Akronites do to help?

JM: The public in general see the homeless on the city streets but lack understanding of

the stories behind what they see. As a result, they are referred to as beggar, bum, panhandler and “Why don’t they get a job!”

Those who share their God-given talents and their time to provide assistance see the face of Christ in all who are in need. We live by the (paraphrased) Matthew 25 scripture in which Jesus instructs us: “What so ever you do unto the least ... you do unto me.” The Greeks of old put it well, “People in need are the ambassadors of the gods.”

What the Akron public can do to help is to become involved, beginning with an understanding of who the homeless are. What has caused them to become unsheltered, and what are their needs?

There are many ways to begin: Get active in your church social concerns group; research online the plight of the homeless and discover the inhumane, as well as the compassionate, treatment by cities across the country.

The next step is to reach out to any number of well-established organizations that minister to the immediate needs of the homeless, and those organizations that seek long-term solutions. Volunteer with organizations, such as The Peter Maurin Center, and go prepared to share your God-given talents rather than

going to “serve”; the distinction between the two terms is that of dignity. Go prepared to share the most effective talent: listening. I remember the saying: “I never learn anything when I’m talking.”

Who is welcome at the center?

JM: Anyone who walks through our doors is welcomed. If they don’t stay long, they most likely are not in need. Our mission is to nurture the body, mind and soul. On rare occasions, we must ask a guest to leave if he or she is causing a disturbance. However, each is invited back to the entrance at any time for a meal.

How can people volunteer their time?

JM: Volunteers are welcome to drop in anytime we’re open: Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. Simply introduce yourself and state your interest in volunteering. … Our many volunteers, each in his or her own right, will attest to the joy in each of their lives having been given the opportunity to share with others in need at PMC. Early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, more than 700 individuals and families celebrated the meaning of the holiday season at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank for the second annual Selfless Elf 5K, part of the Subway Challenge Series.

The freezing temperatures didn’t deter the race participants who ran and walked the 3.1-mile course beginning and ending at the Foodbank. More than $44,000 was raised, the equivalent of 176,000 meals, that will be distributed to people struggling with hunger in the Foodbank’s eight-county service area.

Upon registration, participants were given striped elf socks, and they wore them proudly as they ran the streets of downtown Akron.

Santa’s favorite treat — milk and cookies — was available for runners, along with pictures with Santa.

Akron-based cancer charity Life Is Good No Matter What hosted its first local Holly Run, Dec. 6. The goal of this 5K and Fun Run in downtown Akron is to raise money to grant cherished experiences to terminally ill adults with advanced cancer.

Join the Frozen Fun Medina Ice Festival celebrates 21 years. >> For the 21st year, Medina’s historic district will transform into a frozen winter wonderland that even Elsa would envy — the Medina Ice Festival, Feb. 13 to 16.

Thanks to continued investment in the district by the City of Medina, there are more than 1,000 free parking spaces and a Visitors’ Center with public restrooms for special events. The City also published a new visitors’ guide, which is available in the Visitors’ Center. The guide offers a complete listing of the district’s shops and restaurants.

Sponsored by FirstMerit Bank, this free Presidents Day weekend event begins on Fri., Feb. 13, with a speed-carving contest at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lighting of the incredible Fire and Ice Tower at 7 p.m. Enjoy the individual carving competition from 1 to 4 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, and then treat your sweetie to dinner in one of the Square’s local restaurants. After dinner, stroll around the district and experience the wonders of a frozen light show with colorchanging lights under each carving. Visitors on Sunday will witness the amazing ice artistry of the team-carving competition from noon to 4 p.m., and by Monday, roughly 100 individual ice sculptures will be on display.

Mason Jar Desserts The Wine Mill, Peninsula When owners and managing partners Patrick Cunningham and Stephen McClellan opened The Wine Mill on Nov. 20, they wanted their menu to match the rustic décor of this renovated 1846 structure.

McClellan creates strawberry shortcake, pecan ball ice cream sundaes and chocolate trifle, and he serves them in vintage Mason jars he’s collected over the years from antique shops.

“Everything here is served on wooden boards, slates or Mason jars,” McClellan says. “We have several of the blue antique Mason jars, and people love them because it brings back memories of their grandmother.”

The owners use fresh, local ingredients in their skillet dips, Mason jar salads, sliders, cheese boards, antipasto slates and desserts, and they partner with a California winery to carry private-label wines. The Wine Mill also serves locally-brewed craft beers and Ohio-distilled liquor.

The former Tamsin Park gift shop, with a water wheel that still works, is set on five acres, which the owners plan to landscape and use for guest seating in milder weather.

Twiisted Sushi Grill and Bar, Medina Even if you’re not a fan of traditional sushi, you’ll probably enjoy the Fruit Sushi at Twiisted Sushi Grill and Bar. Head sushi chef Jason Neiswanger makes this unique treat using cream cheese and fresh kiwi, strawberries and oranges, rolled in a soy wrapper and drizzled with a berry sauce and a caramel sauce.

Neiswanger, who has worked at the restaurant for a year, says one of the things he loves about his job is the creative freedom.

“We get an idea and try it out at the sushi bar, and if it’s a hit, we roll with it,” he says.

The Tower Carrot Cake Timber Lodge, Medina You know a restaurant’s carrot cake is good when customers call for reservations AND to make sure the cake is available.

Timber Lodge in Medina offers a dense, four-layer Tower Carrot Cake, which has — as general manager Ron Levitt calls it — “wow factor.” The cake, which has been the restaurant’s signature dessert for more than 10 years, is decorated with frosting and chopped walnuts, and he says one slice can easily feed four or five people.

Made locally for the restaurant, Levitt says although it contains carrots, guests shouldn’t confuse it with a lowcalorie dessert. “Honestly, it is far from healthy, just decadent,” he says. “When you want to treat yourself to something great, you go out to eat. You get a good steak and a good baked potato.

This carrot cake follows suit.”

Wise Guys Lounge and Grill, Akron In the kitchen of Wise Guys Lounge and Grill, chef Patrick Amato and sous chef Ashley Lawrence plan the week’s menu, including the restaurant’s house-made cheesecakes.

Cheesecake is a staple on many restaurant menus but Amato’s version is unique. Guests sample five different cheesecakes that are cut into cubes and cylinders and presented on a platter with accompanying sauces or garnishes.

In addition to New York-style cheesecake and chocolate cheesecake which are always on the menu, the other cheesecake flavors vary from week to week.

“We’ve made a pumpkin cheesecake.

We look at fruit, nuts, whatever looks good at the market,” says Amato. “By cutting the cheesecake into shapes, it gives us a little more room to be creative. Plus, they plate a lot better.”

Amato says guests at Wise Guys often dine in groups so the restaurant’s cheesecake tasting provides a dessert that’s “more sharable and more fun.”

Get to the Point When it comes to accessories, Lukas’ clients are using points, pyramids, peaks and stars to create tactile focal points in their rooms.

“We’ve got these starbursts, and they’re made out of pipes welded together,” she says. “Elements like this are actually very playful when they’re done in metals — shiny or matte. It’s adding dimension to the space.”

Being Brutalist “I think what’s old is new,” Lukas says. “I’ve always loved Mid-Century Modern, and it’s super-hot right now.”

This trend goes back to the Brutalist architectural style of the 1950s through the 1970s that used raw concrete materials. Lukas describes it as a rugged look that communicates strength, and she says it can be used to decorate a room using industrial pieces, repeated geometric shapes and organic forms.

“A lot of them are arranged asymmetrically, and many of them have rough textures,” she says.

On the Fringe Home design typically follows fashion trends, and Lukas says fringe, chains and tassels are being added right now to chandeliers and along the bottom edge of sofas.

“It’s that element of glamour,” she says. “It adds texture to your environment, like there’s movement going on.”

Metal Winners Lukas says designers used to avoid mixing metals but lately, the rules have changed.

“We’ve got some repurposed lighting at our store, and the inside of the shade is painted gold, and then there are silver components on the tripod,” she says. “It adds a lot of visual interest and layers of richness.”

To make this design statement, Lukas suggests repeating it at least three times so there’s a connection in the room. You can do this by having mixed metals on a small sculpture, in the parts of a lamp or in the flecks of cool and warm colors in an area rug.

Back to Nature Marsala, the brownish-red shade that is Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year, offers designers the opportunity to play with dark, earth tones.

Dressed up, these colors can evoke an atmosphere of glamour and luxury, or when added to wooden materials or animal-themed pieces, like antlers and tortoise shells, they can convey a natural look.

To The Letter Another ongoing design trend from last year is using recycled sheet metal letters to spell out initials, short words or numbers that are meaningful to the homeowner.

Last year, designers saw the mashup of industrial style and repurposed furniture — especially lamps made of factory materials with exposed filaments, and that trend continues to grace homes in 2015.

Hospice does its best work when an individual has weeks or months to live and can benefit from the full scope of services. Medical care and management of the disease do not stop. control. Some send patients to nursing homes or hospitals. Hospice of the Western Reserve owns two freestanding hospice houses for aggressive symptom management in a more homelike setting.

Q: Does the hospice have a full-time board certified physician in palliative medicine?

A: A palliative medicine physician is specially trained to manage pain and other difficult symptoms. Hospice of the Western Reserve employs more board certified physicians in hospice and palliative care and more nurses who are certified in hospice and palliative care nursing (CHPN) than any other hospice organization in Northern Ohio.

Q: What bereavement support is available?

A: Medicare requires hospice agencies to provide bereavement services. However, the range varies widely. When a Family Member Advice from a grief counselor is Seriously Ill You have learned that someone in your family is seriously ill. You want to help the ill person as well as your family.

This article will guide you in ways to turn your cares and concerns into positive actions.

The Shock of the News Learning that someone in your family is seriously ill is a blow to everyone the news touches. We sometimes think this only happens in other families, but now it is happening to yours. If the onset of the illness was sudden or unexpected, you and the rest of your family will likely feel shock and numbness at first. This is a natural and necessary response to painful news.

You can only cope with this new reality in doses. You will first come to understand it in your head, and only over the weeks and even months to come will you come to understand it with your heart.

Be Aware of Your Family’s Coping Style How you and your family respond to this illness will have a lot to do with how you as a family have related in the past. If your family is used to openly talking about their feelings with each other, they will probably be able to communicate well about the illness and the changes it brings.

Families in which people don’t talk about feelings and tend to deal with problems individually will probably have difficulty acknowledging the illness and its impact.

If you are reading this article, you are already taking steps to acknowledge the illness in your family. You may have found some family members want to discuss the illness, while others seem to want to deny the reality and refuse to discuss it. Right now your family may feel like a pressure cooker: You all have a high need to feel understood, but little capacity to be understanding.

Adjust to Changing Roles Families sometimes have a hard time adjusting to the changing roles the illness makes necessary. If the head of the household is sick, the other spouse may now have to find a job in addition to caring for the home and children, for example. If Grandma acted as the family’s binding force before she was ill, her family may now feel confused and disjointed where 52

they once felt strong and cohesive.

Such changes can alter the ways in which family members interact with each other.

They may be short-tempered, overly dependent, stoic or any number of other things.

Consider Getting Outside Help Perhaps the most compassionate thing you can do for your family during this stressful time is to reach out for help on their behalf. If someone in your family is caring for the sick person at home, consider hiring a homecare nurse instead. Have groceries delivered. Hire a housekeeper to come in twice a month.

Your church or other community organization might be able to provide volunteers to help you with any number of tasks. And family counseling can be a healing, enriching experience that helps family members understand one another now and long after the illness.

Encourage Open Communication, But Do Not Force It As caring family members, we should encourage honest communication among the sick person, caregivers, family and friends.

However, we should never force it. Children will naturally “dose” themselves as they encounter the reality of the illness in their life.

They aren’t able to take in all the information at once, nor will they want to.

What the Seriously Ill Person May be Feeling Experiencing illness affects a person’s head, heart and spirit. While you wouldn’t want to prescribe what they might feel, do be aware that sick people may experience a variety of emotions. Fear, anxiety, anger, guilt, sadness and loneliness are just a few of the emotions they may feel — one at a time or simultaneously.

These feelings are a natural response to serious illness. Your role as caring family member should be to listen to the sick person’s thoughts and feelings without trying to change them. If she is sad, she is sad. Don’t try to take that necessary emotion away from her. If she is angry or guilty, that’s OK too.

You may be tempted to soothe or deny her painful feelings, but a more helpful response is to simply acknowledge them. Listen and understand.

ily member if you take it upon yourself to learn about her illness. Visit your local library and consult the medical reference books.

Request information from educational associations, such as the National Cancer Institute or the American Heart Association. With the patient’s permission, you might also talk to his physician.

If you educate yourself about the illness and its treatments, you will be a more understanding listener when the sick person wants to talk. You will also be able to help the family as a whole better understand what is happening.

Help Family Members Tend to their Own Needs When a family member is seriously ill, he or she becomes the focal point for the family.

Suddenly everyone is concerned about that one person and her survival. This is normal, yet it places a great physical and emotional burden on everyone involved.

Family members should not lose sight of their own needs during this difficult time.

Encourage everyone to nurture themselves as well as the sick person. Get enough rest. Eat balanced meals. Lighten schedules as much as possible.

Though the family is experiencing a serious time, they should still give themselves permission to be happy. Plan fun events. Take vacations, together or separately. Allow time to laugh, love and enjoy life.

Embrace Your Spirituality If faith is part of your family’s life, express it in ways that seem appropriate to you. Singly or together, you may find comfort and hope in reading spiritual texts, attending religious services or praying. Allow yourselves to be around people who understand and support your religious beliefs. If some among you are angry at God because of the illness, realize that this is a normal and natural response. Try not to be critical of whatever thoughts and feelings each of you needs to explore. / Dr. Alan D. Hospice Honor World War II veteran participates in pinning ceremony.

One out of every four dying Americans is a veteran, according to the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).

Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) understands the importance of recognizing the legacy of our country’s veterans, and in 2014, the organization became a partner of NHPCO’s “We Honor Veterans” program. The program was developed in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and it aims to improve end-of-life care for all veterans.

As part of the program, Hospice of VNS holds special pinning ceremonies for its hospice patients who are veterans. The program is driven by Hospice’s volunteer department, where more than 40 volunteers hand-knit red, w w w. akronlife.com

white and blue blankets, and around 20 veteran volunteers are involved in the veteran-to-veteran pinning ceremony. Since February 2014, 140 Hospice of VNS patients have been pinned. >> On January 12, 93-year-old World War II veteran Winthrop Worcester was honored for his military service at a Hospice of VNS veteran pinning ceremony at Jackson Ridge Rehabilitation and Care in Canal Fulton. He passed away three days later Hospice of VNS volunteer Wayne Matuch, an Army veteran, conducted the pinning ceremony, saluted Worcester for his service and presented him with a certificate, a hand-knit red, white and blue blanket and a veteran’s pin. The ceremony ended with the singing of “God Bless America,” accompanied by Hospice of VNS Music Therapist Leslie Meadows on guitar.

Worcester’s family was present, including his wife, Jane (who also resides at Jackson Ridge) and his children: son Win, daughters Mary, Gail and Susie, and two sons-in-law.

At 22-years-old, Worcester joined the U.S. Army Air Corps (the predecessor of the U.S. Air Force) for three years in the European theater. He was a mechanical engineer and could have stayed stateside but, he said, “I had to go serve because my fellow Americans were being shot. I felt 100 percent I wanted to go for Uncle Sam. We can only help our country by doing for our country.”

He served as a 2nd Lieutenant and co-pilot. In July 1944, on his 37th bombing mission, his plane was shot down by a German fighter pilot.

His family says that all 10 men in the plane got out, although their father’s parachute was packed upside down so he had to figure out how to get it to open.

Once he landed safely, he threw his gun away because he thought the enemy would certainly shoot him if he was armed. Worcester was captured two days later, sent to an officer’s prison camp in North Germany and held as a prisoner of war for nine months. Toward the end of the war, he escaped when the guards abandoned their post upon hearing the Russians were coming. Worcester and other POWs “just started walking.”

After returning home, Worcester met his wife, who says, “I had to chase him ‘til he caught me.” They made their home in New Franklin and were married for 68 years. / Kelly Ward-Smith is a Media and Public Relations Specialist for Akron General Health System.

Letting Your Wishes Be Known The basics on writing your advance directives >> If you became seriously ill and were unable to make your own medical decisions, would your family know what to do? All adults – regardless of age or current health – can benefit from asking themselves this difficult question.

Writing your decisions down in the form of advance directives will let others know your wishes about your future medical care. Advance directives are documents that tell your healthcare provider what kind of health care you would like in the event that you are unable to make medical decisions for yourself. The two most commonly used advance directives are the living will and durable power of attorney for health care.

A Living Will is an advance directive where you put into writing your wishes regarding life-sustaining treatment if you become permanently unconscious or terminally ill and unable to communicate.

The Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care is an advance directive that allows you to appoint someone else to make medical decisions for you in the event that you are unable to do so. Some view this document as more useful in that it can be used any time you are unable to make decisions and is not limited to terminal illness and being permanently unconscious. This advance directive can be effective even if you are only temporarily unable to make decisions (due to accidents, stroke, etc.).

These advance directives can be written by one of several ways. The forms are available online, from your physician or from your state representative. The forms do, however, need to be notarized or witnessed to become active.

Advance directive laws vary from state to state, and if you reside in more than one state, multiple sets of advance februar y 2015

directives may be needed.

Once advance directives are completed, it is important that they are made widely available to people who may be notified if you become seriously ill.

It is not a good idea to have only one copy locked in a safe deposit box. This arrangement will severely limit the chances that your wishes are followed since others will not have access to your information. Some ideas of who should get a signed copy include: your durable power of attorney for health care, your physician, key family members, trusted friends and neighbors, clergy and anyone who may be involved in your health care.

Communication of what is in your documents is equally important. Have discussions with your physician, family, close friends and clergy about what is acceptable or not acceptable to you related to your health care. The more you talk to others about a variety of conditions and situations, the better prepared they will be to act on your behalf should that become necessary.

Any or all of your advance directives can be revoked by you at any time.

If you want to make changes, it is important that anyone you gave copies to gets new copies of your amended wishes. Ask them to promptly destroy the old copies to avoid confusion.

Playing Music Like Life Depends On It / A report from Kabul /

I had never imagined that playing in an orchestra could be a matter of life and death.

Then in December I visited a music school in Kabul where this is plainly the case.

I saw children’s lives changed by music in ways unimaginable to most Americans. For these young people, music is a path to a better world. And yet, as my 2-1/2 weeks of residency came to an end, the school’s orchestra was visited by tragedy: a performance was bombed by the Taliban.

The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (“ANIM,” everyone calls it) is a musical sanctuary for young people ages 9 to 19.

They take both general studies and music classes, but music is the thread that knits the community together. The students come from all over the country and from every ethnicity.

Half are orphans or from impoverished homes. For most of them, getting into the school is like getting into Harvard. It is transformational. It has been called “the happiest place in Kabul.”

I was invited to teach at ANIM by the founder of the school, Dr. Ahmad Naser Sarmast. Sarmast had received an award in the summer of 2014 from a foundation that supports the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, of which I am music director. The prize is given each year to an international figure who uses music for positive social change. It honors the memory of conductor Charles Ansbacher who carried orchestral music into areas of conflict throughout the world.

When Sarmast founded ANIM in 2010, he invited the most famous musicians of Afghanistan to lead its curriculum. The founding faculty are a courageous lot.

Most who answered the call returned from exile. The performance of music had been entirely banned by the Taliban. Today, the school’s emphasis on ethnic diversity, cultural tolerance, and the education and advancement of girls remains controversial with many Afghans. februar y 2015

Among the founding faculty is Ahmad Farid Shefta, a vital and joyful presence in the life of the school. He is Afghanistan’s premiere clarinetist and the founder of ANIM’s Wind Ensemble. Shefta was the only teacher of music in the entire country during Afghanistan’s Civil War. No one else dared. But after the Taliban took over, he was forced to abandon his professional life in Afghanistan. He eventually moved to Russia.

Over dinner with me one night, Shefta explained (in a delivery greatly enhanced by gesticulations and facial expressions) how he reached that decision. When the Taliban first seized power, Shefta submitted to the diktat that all men grow a beard. For a while, he felt distinguished in his neatly cropped beard and kola (white skullcap). But as his beard grew, he thought it made his head look too small.

So, to compensate, he started wearing a loongi (a full turban). As his facial hair grew more and more unruly, he acquired an even bigger

loongi with lots of extra waves and folds.

Finally, growing less attractive by the day, and having exhausted his options in headgear, he moved to Moscow.

The attitude of most people I spoke to — including the kids — is remarkably optimistic. Kabul is a dangerous place, they recognize, but over the course of 15 years, they have seen it go from downright hell to something they believe is moving in the right direction. The Taliban were greeted with open arms by many at first because they ended a 10-year civil war. Now they are overwhelmingly rejected by people living in Kabul, from what I hear and from the polls I have read.

There are enigmas everywhere … questions that greatly challenge my understanding.

According to a recent poll by the Asia Foundation, most Afghans are remarkably happy. And, they’re optimistic about the

future. Seventy-nine percent say they are “somewhat happy” or “very happy.” Fiftyfive percent say the country is moving in the right direction. And 73 percent believe that reconciliation efforts with opposition groups can help stabilize their country. These are all surprising numbers to me, and cause for selfreflection. I believe these numbers are higher than many similar statistics in the U.S. Tolerance for diversity, a strong push to improve education, and growing faith that democracy will take hold are keys to that optimism. And there is no doubt that the current government’s emphasis on empowering girls and women plays a major role as well. In all of these respects, the music school makes a small but significant difference, a fact that is now widely recognized.

In just 4-1/2 years, ANIM has become wellknown throughout the world. It enjoys strong

support from the World Bank and from many international governments. The orchestra has performed at the Kennedy Center and at Carnegie Hall. The school has been the subject of a full-length documentary by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and has been featured on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”

The orchestra of ANIM sounds like no other.

It is made up of both Western and Afghan instruments, and every piece they play is specially arranged. If you want to hear what

The school grounds feel like a safe haven, protected from the hazards of one of the world’s most dangerous cities. But on Dec. 11, 2014, an ANIM performance — an interdisciplinary production on the subject of suicide bombing — came under brutal attack.

About 20 minutes into the show, a suicide bomber entered the rear of the auditorium and detonated a bomb. The Taliban took responsibility, claiming that the event "insulted Islamic values and spread propaganda about our jihad operations." One German citizen was killed, and 20 audience members were injured.

The performance was held under heavy security, but the bomber had managed to enter while hiding explosives in his

underwear. He was judged to have been about 16 years old, from what was found of his remains. The venue was the French Cultural Centre, an international school situated next to the Presidential Palace. I had spent most of the previous day there with the students, but fortunately I had departed Afghanistan later that same day.

Among the injured was Sarmast, the group’s founder. He suffered fractures to his skull caused by shrapnel and significant hearing loss.

He is now regaining his health and is in good care. The day after the attack, the President of Afghanistan visited Sarmast in his hospital room, a remarkable fact given the security measures required. But the founder of Afghanistan’s only music school is no ordinary Afghan. “Dr. Sarmast is a national hero,” the U.S. ambassador recently declared.

ANIM is now temporarily closed. The physical plant is being reinforced, and security procedures strengthened. The school will reopen after an unscheduled break of two months. Sarmast wrote to me recently reaffirming his commitment to expand the school and to make Afghanistan “a safe place for our children, where their voices through music will never be silenced.”

I hope one day soon to invite students of ANIM to visit Northeast Ohio, to attend Akron Symphony concerts and rehearsals, and to sit side-by-side with members of the Akron Youth Symphony. Before there was Napa or Sonoma, there was Buena Vista Ranch and Winery, the oldest commercial winery in California.

The winery is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and it’s a California historical landmark. There are a lot of firsts for this winery which is, for sure, the most colorful winery in California.

In 1840 “The Count” Agoston Haraszthy emigrated from Europe to the American West looking for opportunities. He became one of California’s first sheriffs, and in 1850, he was elected sheriff of San Diego County. He built the first jail and served two years before moving north to San Francisco. He followed the ‘49ers in search of gold in the Sierra foothills but his goal was to make “purple gold.” He purchased 800 acres and built the Buena Vista Ranch and Winery in 1857.

He constantly experimented with blends, dry farming, hillside planting, tightly-spaced vines and low yields to increase flavor. He knew that great wine came from great grapes, but he also knew he needed great terroir. From the soil to the climate, and the vineyard’s sun exposure to the vines itself, The Count knew Sonoma was his place for growing grapes.

His vines in Sonoma were protected from fog and rain by the Sonoma Mountains to the west, and they were cooled by the breezes from the San Pablo Bay to the south at night. Buena Vista Winery became the first gravity-flow winery in California. With the help of Chinese laborers, he also excavated Sonoma’s first caves for aging and storing wine. He is also credited with being the first to experiment with redwood barrels for aging and fermenting.

Boulevard Brewing Coming this month to The 330 February brings the Ohio unveiling of one of the most beloved breweries in the U.S.: Boulevard Brewing.

Based out of Kansas City, Mo., this Midwest sensation delivers some of the most highly rated beers of North America, and this month Northeast Ohio will have the pleasure of tasting all Boulevard has to offer.

The legacy of Boulevard Brewing began in fall 1989 when the brewery produced its first few batches of pale ale, and the Midwest received its first taste of what was to become the eighth largest brewery in the U.S. In 2006, the brewery saw a major expansion, which raised its capacity to 600,000 barrels per year. A year later the brewery introduced the Smokestack Series, a year-round, more artisinal selection of beers that includes its critically acclaimed and beloved farmhouse ale, Tank 7.

This month Ohio introduces five yearround core brands, as well as the coveted Smokestack Series. Here’s a quick peek at some of the great beers Boulevard is bringing to the Buckeye State.

Tank 7 ($10.99 for a four-pack) Tropical fruit flavors embody this Belgian-style farmhouse ale in such an enticing manner that it makes you want to come back for more. Sweet, yet crisp, Tank 7 delivers the right punch of slight tartness to captivate all who sip it.

80-Acre ($8.99 for a six-pack) The traditional wheat beer and India Pale Ale styles collide in this satisfying hybrid. The nose brings forth aromas of strong citrus, while the taste is balanced by what craft beer drinkers have grown to love from a wheat ale.
