The Scout Way

T

hey didn’t discover the dead squirrel at the bottom of the cauldron of pork and beans until most of the scouts had already been served. It didn’t take long before the latrine that I had helped dig that afternoon was filled with pork and beans either fresh from the bowl or having been slightly digested. Mr. Patterson, our scoutmaster, had been extolling the virtues of good outdoor scout cooking, to reassure the 60 young scouts at the campout that the foul smell that was emanating from his rustic meal was normal and that his pork and beans would put hair on our collective chests, though the only hair that I found was in the pot of pork and beans.

When someone pulled the poor dead and fully cooked squirrel from the pot by its tail, with beans dripping from its torso, Mr. Patterson grabbed his mouth and ran toward the latrine, but he only made it halfway there before emptying the contents of his stomach. No one laughed or said anything because Mr. Patterson was still angry with some of us from the night before.

He caught us smoking down by the lake that adjoins Camp Manatoc near Peninsula. We weren’t really smoking, but in the shadow of dusk it sure looked like it. And that, of course, was the intent. Someone had found that by cutting new white cotton clothesline rope into a three-inch length and lighting it at one end, it looked exactly like a real glowing cigarette. Mr. Patterson didn’t know that the cigarettes weren’t real, which made it all the more difficult to keep from laughing at his loud and lengthy lecture about why Boy Scouts don’t smoke and about the honor of being scouts, who are supposed to be trustworthy, etc., etc.

Finally, when one of the boys handed Mr. Patterson his lighted cigarette, Mr. Patterson stopped his tirade abruptly, threw the burning rope into the lake and stalked off. After he lost his lunch the next day, upon discovering the dead squirrel, Mr. Patterson disappeared into his tent and left the camp that night. The next time I saw him was at the scout meeting the following week when he announced a merit badge competition.

Boy Scout Troop 253 met in the gym of the Congregational Church in downtown Kent every Monday night. There were approximately 60 of us who were divided into squads of about five to seven scouts. Each squad had a leader who was usually of a higher rank. Ronnie Spacht was our squad leader and the most competitive person you’ll find. The

rules for the merit badge competition were simple: whichever squad that came up with the most new merit badges by a certain date was the winner. I don’t remember what the prize was, but to Ronnie it didn’t matter. This was a competition, and we were going to win it.

With any competition, you’ve got to know the rules. Our squad was in a unique position in that all of us, except for Ronnie, were Tenderfeet, which is the lowest ranking in the Boy Scouts. Normally, this would not have been good, but Tenderfeet usually don’t have any merit badges. This meant that all merit badges were open game for our squad.

Meanwhile, the squads comprised of more advanced Scouts had likely already gotten the easy ones and had to go after ones that were more difficult to get. Ronnie recognized this immediately, and the seven of us headed for the low hanging fruit, such as the Home Repair merit badge, which my mother signed, but I don’t remember what I fixed. Then there were the Safety and Firemanship merit badges, which came about on a visit to our local fire station; the Forestry merit badge; the Bookbinding merit badge, which we earned when we watched someone bind all of their National Geographic magazines together; and a Wood Chip merit badge, where we learned to handle a knife and axe, though I cut my finger on the knife and bled all over my uniform.

We still got the badge, but I don’t know why since the whole idea of it was to teach you not to cut yourself. We won the competition by a wide margin, and they never held another one as far as I know.

Amy Fox and Monica Tannhof are also scouts, Girl Scouts, who have learned the scout way. They are featured in this issue with an inspiring story of two young girls who were head-on competitors in a marble tournament, but whose generosity and scout spirit can inspire us all.

What I remember of my scouting experience is not unique.

Ask any scout about his or her experiences, and they will regal you with stories that you won’t find in the scout manual, but that encapsulate all that scouting is—camaraderie at a tender age, teamwork, self confidence, and most of all fun.

In October, Akron Life & Leisure traveled to China with this lively group of Akron area friends and relatives. Her trip included a trip to Wellington Bay, home of her cousin Abby Joslin Letteri, whose husband, Joe Letteri, has three Academy Awards for his digital movie work for Peter Jackson’s first two movies in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and for “King Kong.” Here Carolyn is holding one of the statues.

Crescendo 2009

he Akron Symphony Guild’s Crescendo 2009, style show and dinner, was held Oct. 15 at Fairlawn Country Club. A total of 220 guests attended the event, which featured a wide variety of men’s and women’s fashions. The benefit raised nearly $15,000 for the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Youth Symphony and Chorus.

abitat for 1 Humanity of Summit County’s Wines of the World event was held Nov. 6, 2009 at Portage Country Club.

Proceeds support the organization’s work to help families in need open the door to a brighter future. More than 200 people attended the wine tasting and auction, which helped raise more than $25,000 in support of its mission.

W

ork and play are happily intertwined for Jon Stepleton, whose ski season begins well before the weather is cold enough for snow machines to make snow.

Children learn through playing games, Stepleton says. When they’re having fun, they retain more of what they’re learning. They are also more likely to grow up loving the sport. “It’s play,” he explains. “But it’s play with a purpose.”

Stepleton’s teaching history:

As director of children’s instructor training at Boston Mills/Brandywine Resort’s Ski School, Stepleton starts prepping his staff in the classroom and at dry land clinics each fall. He encourages them to build fun and games into their lessons.

More than 65 percent of the ski school’s business involves coaching children from age 2 through the teen years. Fifteen trainers and about 300 youth coaches teach there.

Started teaching skiing in Michigan in 1969. Worked in marketing for the Pontiac division of General Motors for 20 years before starting at Boston Mills/Brandywine in 1991.

Blue Heron Day Oh, to be as faithful as the great blue herons—returning to the Cuyahoga Valley, year after year, with the predictability of the sun.

A celebration in honor of their return is planned on Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Old Trail School, 2315 Ira Road in Bath.

Festivities start with a pancake breakfast until noon. (And new this year, the optional “Early Riser’s Heronry Hike” starts at 8 a.m.) Activity stations will be set up at Old Trail to teach guests more about herons and their habitat through stories and crafts.

Ranger led hikes or complimentary shuttle rides to the Bath Road Heronry cap off the event.

Charmed by Chestnut

W

e were enchanted by the name—Chestnut Crossing— before we knew anything else about the charming spot along the eastern end of Chestnut Boulevard in Cuyahoga Falls. And, of course, we assumed it had a history worth exploring.

What’s that old advice against assuming anything?

The name Chestnut Crossing is of recent vintage, according to Jennifer Syx (pronounced like the number six), the Falls’ deputy community development director.

It refers to the extremely short commercial section of the boulevard running west from Fourth Street.

How short a section?

Would you believe 140 paces?

That’s the distance between two pairs of decorative stone markers that flank the street.

While the name and markers are new, the business district has roots.

“This has been a small commercial area for decades,” Syx said. “It’s a quaint area we wanted to highlight.”

To do so, the city paved the crosswalk in red brick, added black pipe fencing on both sides of the street and decorated the sidewalk with more black pipe in the shape of bicycles, all designed to maintain the area’s charm, Syx said.

A curve was added to the crossing’s section of the boulevard to slow vehicular traffic, she added.

ing the name Empire etched in stone across the top. I went inside while Ayers focused on the subject of his illustration.

Owner Elie Akiki, who also operates the Magic Shears hair salon next door, isn’t impressed by the decorative improvements. He complained that the city took

away parking instead of adding spaces as needed.

and the Chestnut Laundromat the day we were there.

Other businesses along the south side of the boulevard included a dance studio, a dry cleaner, two hair salons and an art gallery. Across the street the Boulevard Tavern, the Chestnut Beer Garden, another salon and a dental laboratory dominate the commercial landscape.

Artist Ayers recalled going to one or both of the bars with his Beacon Bomber teammates after softball games around 1980. We didn’t stop in either but Vicki Ritterbeck, who works at the Chestnut Beer Garden, told me later that building dates to 1919. Kelly Tannous, owner of EClipz Salon & Spa at 443 Chestnut, said her business has been there 30 years and that her husband, Adib, operates the dental lab.

That was as much history as we could glean from the neighborhood until I spoke to Madeline and Libert Bozzelli, whom we remembered used to live at the other end of Chestnut, where it meets Sackett Avenue on the west side of State Road. The Bozzellis, who now live elsewhere in the Falls, shared a few memories of their years in the neighborhood.

Bozzelli, a former member of both the Summit County and Falls City councils, said the name Chestnut Crossing was new to him, too, although he recalled watching the area develop during his 18 years on the city council.

They lived on Chestnut for 27 years after their family outgrew their first home on the next street, Grant Avenue, which he built in 1950 “with one hammer and one saw,” and added on to three times, Mrs. Bozzelli recalled. She added a final note that brought us back to the Crossing and slightly beyond.

“I used to spank our sons when they went that far down the street because of the gorge,” Mrs. Bozzelli said, referring to the eastern terminus of the boulevard across Front Street from what today is the site of the Sheraton Suites.

Friendship Girl Scouts share a scholarship and show what it means to be a good sport.

B

est friends Monica Tannhof and Amy Fox do everything together, from joining Girl Scouts to competing in Power of the Pen. So when Fox found out about the 2009 Akron District Marble Tournament for college scholarship money, she was sure to tell her best friend.

The 13-year-old girls attended the tournament together, and after a day of competing, the final championship for the prize—a $1,000 scholarship—came down to the two of them. When Tannhof threw the winning marble, the scholarship money was hers. But then she did something very unexpected ... well, it was unexpected for everyone except her and Fox. Since these girls share all their experiences and time with each other, Tannhof decided to follow the best friend code and share another thing—the scholarship money.

“We didn’t exactly talk about splitting it actually, but I knew that we were probably going to end up sharing it no matter who won,” Fox says. “We have just been friends for a long time and we always supported each other and we’ve done a lot of things together.”

The girls actually joked about the championship coming down to the two of them while practicing with their marbles at school. “We talked about it and we always laughed like, ‘Oh what if ends up just being me and you. Who will win?’”

Tannhof says. “When it came down to it, we were just like, ‘Oh just let the best person win.’”

Soft-spoken Tannhof has always had a reputation of being very shy, but she made the outgoing decision to split the scholarship after she realized she actually won (which she claims was a big surprise to her). She discussed it first with her mother, who then informed tournament director Michael Cohill of Tannhof’s decision.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this ever happening and I’ve been researching marble tournaments since they first began in 1923,” Cohill says.

After working with the Girl Scouts for many years, leading tours of the marble museum and giving lessons, Cohill says the young girls in this organization have always astonished him with their ability to work as a team. He thinks Tannhof’s selfless act is a testament to the Girl Scouts.

“They have this history together as a group of cooperation, that’s all I attribute it to,” Cohill explains.

But Fox says Tannhof has always been a giving person and this compulsion to give has been brought out more by being a Girl Scout. “She’s always been a really nice person who would give her blood to me if I was dying on the floor, and I would do the same for her, and I just think that the Girl Scouts have really brought that out in all girls,” Fox says.

they’ll take after high school or where they will invest the scholarship money, but they each have their own interests to pursue.

“I’m not exactly sure what I want to do when I grow up or what school I want to go to, though I am interested in Marine biology ’cause I do love animals,” Fox says. “But I also love drawing and writing.”

As for Tannhof, personal experience has her considering a career as a neurologist.

“I had a seizure about, I think it was, two years ago, and so I had to go to a neurologist every once in awhile and it felt nice talking to somebody like that,” she explains. “I just would think that when I got older I would make a good neurologist because I had something that they might relate to.”

Whatever these two decide, they are sure they will be in it together like everything else they do. “I think it’s still the opposites attract thing, we cover for each other’s weaknesses,” Fox says. “We definitely help each other out in our weak spots. She’s a good writer, but she has a little trouble with her points-of-view and I help her with that and I’m not that great in math so she helps me there.”

Peter Lehmann Clancy’s Red 2006 Peter Lehmann Layers White 2009 Col. William Light, South Australia’s first surveyor-general and Adelaide’s farsighted planner discovered the Barossa Valley in 1837. He named it Barossa because it reminded him of the country in Spain where he had fought the Battle of Barossa during the Peninsula Wars against Napoleon.

In 1979, a young, ambitious winemaker named Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built Peter Lehmann Wines in the heart of Barossa. Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. s principal of the Devlin Group Inc., a human resources consulting firm in Hudson, Ed Devlin has spent years helping employers find qualified professionals, coaching employees on interpersonal skills and providing career planning and job search aid. These experiences have led Devlin to begin individual coaching as well, whether it be a recent college graduate looking for direction or a person who wants to shift paths mid-career.

“Essentially, it’s the same approach,” Devlin explains. “When you’re dealing with a mid-career person, you’ve got someone who not only has the education but also work experience to draw upon.

With college grads, you want to enact what kinds of entry-level positions the person can pursue and look for the longevity of the career.”

What’s in a Name?

Understanding the basic differences among types of private schools Parents today have more choices than ever when it comes to educating their children. From finding the perfect preschool to helping students select a college, there are a lot of decisions to be made.

And the process goes far beyond the public vs. private debate, as the list of private school types is extensive.

It’s easy to get confused by the different types of school out there, and the selection varies a lot by region. For those new to the world of private schools, here’s a breakdown of some the basic terms and types of private schools commonly found in our area. However, this is simply a brief synopsis. For more information, it’s best to contact individual schools you’re interested in learning more about.

What are independent schools?

Independent schools are private, nonprofit schools governed by elected boards of trustees. Though they are sometimes affiliated with religious organizations, the school’s board and finances are handled independently.

What are parochial schools?

Parochial schools are the most common type of private school.

These schools are church related. Most are owned and operated by Catholic parishes and dioceses, but Protestant and Hebrew parochial schools also exist. Academic curriculum in parochial schools includes daily religious instruction and prayer.

What is the difference between country day schools and boarding schools?

Country day schools and boarding schools are similar in that both are usually independent schools and both aim to build character and encourage camaraderie in an atmosphere that fosters learning and culture. Many are also college preparatory schools. Boarding schools provide students room and board during school terms. As the name implies, students of country day schools stay on campus during the day and return home to their families in the evening.

What is a Waldorf school?

Waldorf schools approach teaching from philosophical perspective with the belief that humans are equal parts spirit, soul and body.

Waldorf curriculum is structured to respond to the three developmental phases of childhood: birth to age 6 or 7, from 7-14 years and from 14-8 years. The goal is to educate the child as a whole and to turn education into an art form, allowing students to relate classroom lessons to life experiences.

What is a Montessori school?

Montessori schools follow the methods of founder Dr. Maria Montessori. Like Waldorf schools, Montessori schools are also based on child development theories. Rather than having homework and grades, Montessori students perform self-evaluations and participate in conferences with their parents and teacher, with an emphasis on adapting the students’ learning environment to their developmental levels. —KL

The 16PF looks at the individual’s personal strengths related to five areas of behavior: problem-solving resources, patterns for coping with stressful situations, interpersonal interaction styles, organizational role and work-setting preferences, and career activity interests.

Devlin then calculates the results using a computer program, which produces an individual profile (for the CISS) and a career development report (for the PF16). The next step is for Devlin to verbally go over the results with the individual, putting the responses into context. He looks for any overlaps in interest, personality, education, experience and job availability.

These areas are likely to produce better options than others.

Although someone might have a strong interest in a certain field, and believe to have some innate skill in that area, if the career requires a master’s degree and jobs are not plentiful in that field, it may not be worth the financial and time risk.

Instead, the individual may want to consider a hobby or volunteer position that incorporates those traits.

It’s important that people who administer these instruments are properly trained on how to use them. They also need to have a strong understanding of the job market and how to translate the test results into the real world. “That’s where an experienced job counselor is really important,” Devlin says.

He suggests college-bound students participate through their high school in interest inventory testing and possibly personality testing. “This is really a great opportunity for them to be able to determine what kind of education they’re going to get before it’s too late to make a change,” Devlin explains. “CISS shows interest in seven different areas, then tells the different kinds of education that somebody might take in college for this kind of work. It’s an excellent tool. I would love to see every high school grad take it before they go to college.”

With college graduates, the situation becomes more complex depending on the area of study. For instance, an accounting or engineering major probably knows what he or she wants to do for a career. Business students are a little different because they have a wide range of possibilities. “Liberal arts grads can have fantastic grounding but no courses that necessarily point them in the right direction,” Devlin says. “This kind of coaching, or counseling, can be very important if they come out of school unsure of what they want to do.”

While career coaches such as Devlin can certainly offer guidance and advice to clients, they’re job is not to make decisions for people. Instead, Devlin aims to shed some light on clients’ strengths and help them figure out how those strengths fit logistically into careers that will not only make the individuals happy but also sustain them financially. “People have to make their own choices,” he says. “They just have to make educated choices.”

Western Reserve Academy A

recently released study by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), a non-profit organization of independent, college preparatory schools, found that most students who apply to boarding school are seeking a better education. And, current students surveyed indicated significantly higher levels of satisfaction with their academic experience at boarding schools than their peers at public and private day schools. Boarders also reported that they find their schools academically challenging, their peers more motivated and the quality of teaching very high.

The TABS survey also documented that the 24/7 life at boarding school fosters independence and gives students a significant leg up when they attend college, preparing them for both the academic and non-academic aspects of college life, and that more boarding school graduates go on to earn advanced degrees once they finish college. Beyond college, boarding school graduates advance faster and further in their careers comparatively.

How does your garden grow ?

ardening is an easy, fun and important activity. Before you start your garden, make sure you have a sunny spot with good dirt.

Sun and soil are the two most important parts of a successful garden. You can make the soil even better by adding compost, from your own kitchen or from the local garden store.

You also need to decide if you are going to plant vegetables or flowers or both. Flowers add beauty to your home, while veggies are a healthy snack. If you are interested in vegetables, then you may consider carrots, celery, peppers or even beans. Flowers can also be added to the edge of your garden. Some of my favorites are tulips, daffodils and poppies.

Needed supplies for your garden project include gloves, a shovel and, of course, seeds. If you are hoping to can your vegetables, try beans, tomatoes or carrots.

things to grow in your garden:

Tomatoes: Use them in salads, or can them for salsa or spaghetti sauce.

Herbs: Rosemary or chives are easy to grow and will spice up your food.

Cucumbers: They are easy to grow, but do take up quite a bit of room.

Peppers: Hot peppers need hot weather, but bell peppers grow almost anywhere.

Strawberries: You can grow them in pots on your deck, or on the ground.

Squash: You can put them in soups, salads or eat them fresh. Don’t plant too many, though, or you’ll have, well, too many!

Don’t forget, you can also plant fruits such as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. If you have the space, you can actually plant your own orchard and grow pears or apples or cherries. Yum! When you are planting vegetables or berries, make sure you have some sort of protection, such as a fence, if you live in an area with small animals so they don’t get in your garden. And don’t forget about the big animals. One year, the deer ate all our raspberry bushes -- right down to the ground. If they had just waited, the berries would have been so much better.

Now, on to flowers. Flowers are very pretty and important to our ecosystem. There is no rule that says vegetables and flowers can’t mix. In fact, your vegetable garden will benefit if you add some flowers and herbs. Planting both flowers and herbs can protect your vegetables from insect pests and even make them more productive. Marigolds keep away bees, so these would be nice to grow, plus butterflies love marigolds and I love butterflies.

Beans: It only takes a few weeks before beans are ready to pick.

If you want to be really creative, you can grow an edible garden. You have probably heard of cooking and eating dandelions but did you know that nasturtium and pansies are also edible?

Corn: If you have a lot of space, try growing some corn.

Once your garden is planted, watering is very important. You should water at least once a week. Some plants need more water than others but if you have really good soil you might not need to water at all.

Watermelon: The perfect summer fruit— you can even start it from an old piece of watermelon with seeds.

Salad greens: Lettuce, cabbage or collard greens taste best when planted by you.

And stay away from pesticides so your garden is healthy and natural. You can add nesting boxes with bird seed to attract birds, which will eat many bugs that destroy your garden.

You can’t go wrong, simply by planting what you enjoy eating, whether you are going to can for the winter, or eat fresh while it is in season.

hen empty nesters John and Marlene Brinzo recently decided they wanted to remodel their North Royalton home to make it more usable and current, they sought the help of Amy Douglass at The Interior Design Studio in Medina. “We wanted to make sure we did it right,” John Brinzo says. “Amy was sort of the general contractor on the job, engaging the contractors, painters and other craftsmen.”

Douglass points out that the project is definitely considered a remodel, as opposed to a redesign. “The project consisted of the living room, dining room, family room, foyer and kitchen,” Douglass says, adding that it took a great amount of design capability as well as patience on behalf of the homeowners.

“Fortunately we didn’t have any kitchens or bathrooms being upset, and we could work around the construction areas,” Brinzo notes.

Updates included the removal of walls along with the existing wall of stone from the original fireplace, as well as a half wall with iron railing that divided the living room and hallway. The original family room was converted into a warm, inviting library, which Brinzo says has become the couple’s favorite room. “During this transformation we selected new hardwood floors to connect the current living room, dining room, halls and foyer,” Douglass explains. “A ceramic medallion was added to the foyer to fully give a sense of presence to this entry space.”

In addition, paint and wall coverings were updated, new cabinetry was built for the library and new furniture was custom designed to better suit the couple’s needs. “Speaking from a designer’s point of view, I feel the home is spectacular both in function, color and design,” Douglass says. “This job is a tribute to great workmanship on the part of the contractors as well as the design team.”

The happy couple would likely agree, and Brinzo offers the following advice to other homeowners looking to tackle a remodeling project: “I think you need to have a budget and have a sense of what you want to do and how much you can afford to spend,” he says. “Make good choices within that budget. If you’re going to do it, do it right and don’t shortcut the job. Otherwise, you’re going to be unhappy.”

Hot Trends for 2010 As owner of The Interior Design Studio, Amy Douglass says clients most often seek her help with color choices. “Colors are very difficult for people to fix.” In addition, home remodels, especially kitchens or master baths, have become quite popular.

In terms of design, Douglass says 2010 finds more people nesting, staying where they are. Popular colors include shades of purple, lavender, fuchsia, gray and charcoal, with pops of yellow, celery and teal.

The green movement is also very big this year, with customers looking for bamboo flooring, natural-fiber carpets and “things that are easily replaced and don’t take away from the environment,” Douglass adds.

Textured and art deco types of patterns are also hot right now.

For homeowners who can’t afford a complete remodel, Douglass suggests repainting a room to achieve big impact without a big price. “You can do so much with paint,” she says.

A Quick, Fresh Look for the Home

While books and magazines can be great sources of inspiration, Douglass cautions homeowners to personalize those ideas, rather than copying them verbatim. “It’s really important to love where you are and make it feel comfortable to you,” she says.—KL

erri Baisden knew the time had come to make some significant changes in her lifestyle. The accounts payable supervisor at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores was ready to lose weight and gain some much-needed stamina.

Her best advice to family members: Don’t treat your elderly parents like children.

A

s senior citizens age, many face times when they feel like giving up and opting out of life, but staying involved is the single most important thing an older adult can do to stay healthy emotionally and physically, according to adult psychiatric nurse practitioner Susan Yund.

Yund wants seniors and their families to know that being isolated has hidden dangers.

Elderly people tend to lose their ability to think and use their mind. When there is not interaction, their ability to process information diminishes due to the fact another human being is not dialoging with them, she says. “I have seen more isolated adults become delusional and hallucinate—two very dangerous psychiatric issues,” she adds.

homes—and doctors can order those therapies to help seniors. In addition to visiting therapists, meals on wheels and other “wrap around services” are readily available to help seniors stay in their own homes as long as they can do so safely.

Having walkers, equipping the bathroom with devices to help seniors get in and out of the tub and inviting professionals to visit the home to assess the older person’s risks and make recommendations are good ideas too.

Arranging transportation so seniors who can no longer drive safely can still get out of the house for regular excursions is another way to help them stay active and engaged with others.

New technologies as simple as amplified telephones can help seniors with hearing problems who might otherwise give up on trying to talk with friends and family members on the phone.

Make an effort to involve the older adult in the decision making process. Don’t take their choices away from them.

Doing so may be one more loss for an older adult who is already faced with a myriad of other losses.

State of mind does indeed affect the overall health of most seniors. “When I get to know an individual, the ones I see that are happy and well adjusted have resolved past issues,” Yund says.

“Whether those issues are deaths, abuse issues or whatever, they have processed them and moved on. The healthiest individuals were the ones that resolved the bad things that happened to them and kept moving forward with their life.”

While Yund encourages seniors to be lifelong learners, she also reminds younger family members and friends that older adults have much to contribute.

“They have a lot of knowledge to share because of all of their experiences in life,” she says. “If younger people would just sit and listen to them, they have a lot to offer.”

Start Early when Dealing with Dementia, Alzheimer’s

What’s the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease and what can you do about them?

Dementia is “when you cannot think like you used to,” according to Pam Schuellerman, executive director of the Greater East Ohio Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s really the umbrella description for a loss of brain function that occurs with a variety of other diseases.

Dementia usually appears first as forgetfulness, but it may also involve problems with language, memory, perception, emotional behavior, personality and cognitive skills (such as calculation, abstract thinking or judgment).

While almost 60 percent of dementias are caused by Alzheimer’s disease, a broad range of other problems—including depression, a bad mixture of medicines, multiple sclerosis or stroke—can also cause dementia. That’s good news because some forms of dementia are reversible, especially when caught and treated early.

Even in the case of Alzheimer’s, for which there is still no cure, family members shouldn’t ignore the

symptoms of memory loss or peculiar behaviors in their loved ones.

“When it starts to affect your everyday living is when you have to take notice,” Schuellerman says.

Early intervention works best.

Medications like Aricept® or the Exelon® Patch can give patients a window of better functioning for six to 12 months, according to Schuellerman.

Still, not every challenge associated with aging is a monumental hurdle according to adult psychiatric nurse practitioner Susan Yund. Pro Bono Publico Local lawyers respond to their community’s increasing need.

A

family’s house is foreclosed. A man is sued over credit card debt. A woman’s children go to visit their dad, but he won’t give them back for months. None of these people can afford a lawyer, and none has the legal right to be provided one.

Woodburn is personally involved with Habitat for Humanity, aiding in fundraising and organizing group workdays when associates and interns go out and get their hands dirty.

He says it’s wise for law students to get involved with pro bono work. “We try to tell young associates it’s important to get involved,” he says. “We expect new attorneys to get on boards and do community work, as well.”

In a criminal case, the state will provide lawyers for those who can’t afford one. But Bill Dowling, a partner at Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs law firm, says it’s up to the individual to pay for an attorney in a civil case.

Dean Carro, director of University of Akron’s legal clinic, agrees that students should do pro bono work. “We inform students that attorneys are noted for their desire to give back,” he says.

“If your husband is beating you and you need to go to court to get an order to get him to stop, you don’t have the right to a lawyer,” Dowling says.

In these cases, the individual may contact services such as Community Legal Aid, a non-profit law firm that helps serve the legal needs of low income or senior residents in northeastern Ohio. Community Legal Aid helps match clients with private volunteer lawyers like Dowling.

The American Bar Association recommends lawyers contribute at least 50 hours of pro bono, or work done without compensation for the public good, each year. From custody cases to consumer fraud, pro bono lawyers give back to their communities, many in excess of the recommendation.

David Woodburn, also a partner at Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, says pro bono work is key for lawyers.

“Commitment in the community is important to being a successful lawyer,” he says. “It shows more than just being book smart. It helps you develop a heart and mind for the community and an awareness of its need.”

Carro says pro bono work is broadly defined. It can mean students clean up at a home for the elderly, give legal advice or supervision of attorney.

Last October, the Akron Bar Association and The University of Akron helped coordinate the Wills for Heroes program. This national program helps provide essential legal documentation free of charge to local police, firefighters and other emergency responders. Attorneys volunteered to help with wills and powers of attorney.

But lawyers also volunteer more than just legal work.

Woodburn says attorneys also get involved with local charities and service organizations. He says each attorney at the firm is on at least one board, helping financially and actively in charities and community organizations.

“Everyone has a charity or two of choice,” he says. “We take pride in it.”

The university sees many pro bono opportunities. Groups such as the Akron Bar Association and Legal Aid seek help, or clients can contact the university directly. These opportunities are then presented to students. They decide on an individual basis what they want to commit. Students can participate in a class that corresponds with pro bono placement and receive credit for their work.

But this work is voluntary.

“It would be kind of an oxymoron to make it a requirement, since it’s service oriented,” says Carro, who sees a large interest in pro bono work among students. “This is a generation of wanting to do something, they want to help.”

However, he recommends students wait until at least after their second semester of college before providing pro bono

Carro says there’s plenty of time to get involved.

Likewise, there are plenty of opportunities. Dowling says he has seen a definite increase in the need for pro bono work with the high number of foreclosures.

The Legal Services Corporation employs lawyers to work full time for the poor, but there are only enough to fulfill 25 percent of the need. Dowling feels it’s his duty to give back, but also finds his pro bono work fulfilling. “One woman I helped had three lovely little boys,” he says. “They went to visit their dad and he wouldn’t give them back. The mother couldn’t see her sons for months, but we fought and we got them back to her.”

Dowling says lawyers have done a great deal for their communities, but the need is ever increasing. “Lawyers have been heroic in their work,” he says, “and they need to do more.”

Voting lawyers were provided this general guideline for determining if a nominee should be listed among “the best”: “If you had a close friend or relative who needed a real estate lawyer (for example), and you could not handle the case yourself, to whom would you refer them?” All votes and comments were solicited with a guarantee of confidentiality - a critical factor in the viability and validity of Best Lawyers(r) surveys. To ensure the rigor of the selection process, lawyers were urged to use only their highest standards when voting, and to evaluate each nominee based only on his or her individual merits. The additional comments were used to make more accurate comparisons between voting patterns and weight votes accordingly. Best Lawyers uses various methodological tools to identify and correct for anomalies in both the nomination and voting process.

Ultimately, of course, a lawyer’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow attorneys. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, the breadth of the survey, the candor of the respondents, and the sophistication of the polling methodology largely correct for any biases.

Carol Heiss Jenkins Fifty years ago, she took the gold.

Shortly after her time in Hollywood, she and Hayes moved to a three bedroom ranch on Cliffside Drive and started their family. Eight years later, they built a five bedroom house on a former farm on Lafayette Drive off Palisades where they raised their three children. “I can’t tell you how welcoming Akron was to me. It’s a family town with good homespun values,” Heiss Jenkins says. “We made wonderful friends there,” she adds, recalling great neighbors and many cookouts and holiday parties together.

While in Akron, Heiss Jenkins was an active volunteer and a member of the Junior League and Junior Women’s Board at Children’s Hospital. Then in 1978, when the owner of a new rink in Montrose approached her, she agreed to give free lessons to local children who wanted to learn to ice skate.

The response from the community was overwhelming. While she never intended to coach, parents began requesting private lessons for their children and before long she was back in the game as a skating coach for many Olympic hopefuls.

he year 1960 was a big one for Carol Heiss. Just 20 years old, she won the gold medal for figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, Calif. Then six weeks later, she married fellow Olympic champion Hayes Jenkins, who won his figure skating gold medal in Italy in 1956.

Their wedding was at the beautiful St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Fifth Avenue in New York City, Carol’s home.

Their marriage brought them here to Jenkins’ hometown of Akron. As newlyweds, the pair rented a small apartment 82

on Chamberlain Road in West Akron at a time when talk of constructing a shopping mall nearby had just begun.

Five years later, Summit Mall was built.

Heiss Jenkins spent a few months of her first year of marriage in Hollywood with a starring role in “Snow White and the Three Stooges” a twist on the classic fairy tale that took Snow White to the dwarfs’ place while the three stooges were housesitting. It was Heiss Jenkins’ one and only film.

The couple lived in Akron for 39 years.

When Hayes retired from Goodyear International, they moved to Westlake to be near three of their 10 grandchildren and near the skating rink (Winterhurst in Lakewood) where Heiss Jenkins continues to coach.

“Skating is like ballet on ice and very athletic,” says the first woman to land a double axel in 1953. “I love the sport. I’m really passionate about it.”

This year, her student Parker Pennington will be at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver with the U.S. men’s figure skating team.

Hayes and Carol Heiss Jenkins will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 30.
