Remembrance of holidays past The Holiday Season is upon us, but the only holiday this resembles is maybe July 4th.

The weather, this time of year, has been absolutely balmy; it has been so unseasonably warm that I have been playing golf a couple of times a week as normal. I’m writing this column a week before Thanksgiving and my petunias are still in bloom and little green peppers hang from a sorrowful looking pepper plant sitting on the deck. It has only frosted a couple of times until now. When you are reading this page a couple of weeks from now of course, there could be snow up to our “you-know-whats” and the temperature could be hovering around our ankles or lower. But for now it doesn’t look like that.

It’s funny how we remember our best and worst holidays. My best was when my parents and I went to visit my Aunt Mildred and Uncle Charlie over the Thanksgiving of 1950.

My father had just bought a new Mercury two-door sedan that fall and this was the first road trip we had ever taken in it. When we arrived in my little Southern Ohio hometown that winter, it had been snowing lightly all day. Since the Weather Channel and any hint of modern weather forecasting techniques were many years away, we had no way of knowing that on Thanksgiving Day we would be hit by one of the biggest winter storms to ever hit that part of the country. As the snow started piling up my father said, “We better get out of here, while we can.” What a horrible thought. We had just gotten there and I hadn’t even got to play with my two cousins, Linda and Georgia. My cousins and I pleaded with him to stay another day since he wasn’t planning on going home till Saturday. Well, Friday dawned and it was still snowing. My uncle and dad went out to try to dig the Mercury out from the snow hump it had created. They succeeded in a couple of hours of digging, but then realized that there was no place to go since all of the roads were closed between southern Ohio and our home in Erie.

We cheered, we yelled, we threw snowballs.

We were stuck and it would be several days before we would be rescued by the Highway Patrol’s plow trucks.

In the meantime, us kids made the most of the unexpected vacation. Since the snow was so high on the back door that we could open it inward, we dug a tunnel to the outhouse, which was welcomed by a rush out the back. We had enough food left over from Thanksgiving that we had plenty to eat and the house was merry with warm cocoa and goodhearted talk and laughter all around.

A decade later on Christmas 1960, I was alone, living in Long Beach, Calif. I awoke Christmas morning and, at first, didn’t realize it was Christmas Day. There was a box sitting on the table, which contained my Christmas.

It was a box from my mother with gifts and, most importantly, a small Christmas tree that was about six inches tall. I don’t remember what I got for that Christmas except for that little tree.

My calendar that day was empty, so I walked across Ocean Blvd. and sat in the park across from my Silver Eagle Hotel and watched the ocean waves brush the sand in and out, in and out. The day was mild, roughly 60 degrees with a high sky and bright sunshine.

As I sat on the beach I realized that I was virtually the only person on it except for a few gulls and a jogger every now and then. I watched the sun slowly sink into the horizon and got a chill that was not part of the cooling day. I suddenly realized that I didn’t want to spend another Christmas by myself and that the home I had left for the sunny shores of California was not without its charm and comfort. What I would have given that day to be back in cold Ohio nestled within the warmth of my family—my mother who sent me letters with a couple of dollars tucked inside, my father who surprised me when he was the one who cried as I left home for the first time, my little sister for whom I had

bought the biggest stuffed chimpanzee toy I could find for Christmas, and of course my little dog Blackie, who I was convinced understood me better than anyone else.

Many, many Holiday Seasons have come and passed since then and I have never spent another Christmas alone. The first time I walked into our new home a few years ago, I announced, “Christmas,” because for the first time we would be able to host the Holidays with plenty of room for our five children, 10 grandchildren, one great granddaughter and two dogs. My life has been blessed in so many ways since those early days. Here is wishing you and yours a very happy and blessed Holiday Season. I am grateful that I live in the best spot on the face of the earth and at the best of all possible times. Happy Holidays!

C.L. Davis Jewelers Closing After 60 Years

Downtown Akron’s C.L. Davis Jewelers will be closing their doors this winter after 60 years. The family business has been a community staple since 1954.

A California-based conceptual artist recently had Akron’s Innerbelt Freeway shut down for a few hours to host a roadway dinner for locals. A Yelp review gave the event one

I recently learned that the first rule of improv comedy is "Yes, And." The idea is that a successful performer must always say "yes" to another's contribution and then to add something—"and"—of his or her own, thereby strengthening the collaboration and creating a unique experience for the audience.

Honestly, I have little to no interest in improv comedy. It's fine, and I appreciate many of the talented performers who've emerged from that scene, but improv comedy is neither my thing nor a likely subject for a Gamut. As a habitual sayer of "No," however, I'm fascinated by this "Yes, And" business.

Truth be told, in recent years I've, on random occasions, forced myself to voice agreement even when my gut-bound naysayer screams, "Shut it down!" Sometimes, like when the endless parade of journalism majors asked to interview me and photograph our storefront semester after semester, it was just good business; other times, though, I found that questioning the curmudgeon shut-in at my soul's root can lead to unexpected, occasionally delightful, experiences. More "Why Not?" than "Yes, And," but the principle is similar.

All of this explains why I consented to a photojournalist's request to follow my family around for a few days despite a deep, almost pathological, distaste for the experience of being photographed.

Actually, the story starts months earlier, when a couple of family friends, one a professional photographer who's earned considerable recognition for his photographs of musicians, brought 40-something broiler chickens to our house for a hands-on lesson in harvesting home-grown poultry. Following the experience—one of the filthier tasks a person can engage the physical self in—the photographer 12

hefted a large-format camera from the trunk of his car and asked if he could make a family portrait of us, his way of expressing gratitude.

My wife and I looked at each other, each inventorying the other's far-beyond-grimy clothes, face, hair and said, "Why Not?" So when our county extension agent asked if our three-generation family farm might be open to hosting a shutterbug for a stretch of time, part of a city-wide workshop for aspiring photojournalists, we already knew we could say yes, and that's what we did.

Do I have to tell you that it's a strange experience, being shadowed by a camera-wielding stranger for days on end? Doing chores— click. Fixing dinner—click. Drinking a beer, walking down the driveway, sweeping the floor—click, click, click. But while initially unsettling, we quickly came to see the inestimable value of the experience. My children, now 4, 7 and 11, will someday soon be adultsized people, moving around in the world doing adult-sized things, and my wife and I will pine for the days when their miniature selves lived with us and banged on out-oftune string instruments downstairs while dad attempted to write one floor up (true story).

And in these wistful moments, we'll reach for the images, touch these few days, and remember what life was like then.

It's powerful and kind of unbelievable that, despite the unyielding barrage of imagery encountered every waking hour of our days, december 2015

a solitary image still has the power to move us. That the picture I'm looking at now, my middle daughter supine in a hammock with her favorite chicken cradled in her arms, can fill me with joy and pride and a creeping nostalgia for a week-old moment as I'm rushed forward in time to see myself looking back to almost-now through this photograph—that's pretty amazing, right?

Visiting the writings of photography's early days, one encounters revelations that, against seemingly insurmountable odds, still ring true in the age of selfie sticks, corporate headshots and social media feeds. "We photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again," mid-century photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson said in his book, “The Decisive Moment.”

It's arguable the extent to which photography actually captures the vanishing thing, but a picture definitely creates an observation deck for viewers, a vantage point where memory and contemporary feelings commingle for a new, largely subjective experience. In “Camera Lucida,” writer Roland Barthes comments on this subjectivity by recounting an image of his deceased mother that moved him deeply, saying of it, "It exists only for me. For you, it would be nothing but an indifferent picture."

Maybe this is true, maybe not—while I'd never expect to experience Barthes' emotions looking at the photograph, I can't say I'd feel

indifferent. I literally can't say that, because Barthes never lets the reader see the image in question.

So these were some of the thoughts jangling around in my subconscious as the photojournalist trailed us around the house and into town, me pondering what it really meant for her to fill SD cards with hundreds of frozen microseconds lifted from our life. And, as her presence was actually just one piece of a larger project—the documentation of a community we're just now beginning to feel a part of—I was forced to consider the overall historical value of capturing a place at a certain time.

The picture on my refrigerator of a large family, fronted by a swollen-bellied, overallwearing "Pa" figure and standing in the front yard of my house circa 1910, is a constant reminder that the imagery and the history of a place are indelibly tied together.

I've yet to receive the entire bulk of the photojournalist's pictures from her days on the farm, though I know a disk will arrive in the mail soon. The images I've seen have been both familiar and refreshingly strange, my everyday life glimpsed from an angle I've never really seen. My family's facial expressions as we operate semi-unaware of the camera (you do kind of forget after a while) are enough to make my breath catch in wonder.

But I did get that large-format photograph back, and it is, as expected, absolutely gorgeous. That's what I told my friend too, when we stood in his basement studio and he presented it to us.

"I don't know about gorgeous," he said, "but it's certainly a moment in time." He then advised us to stick the print in a blanket drawer and pull it out in ten years to wonder over the changes we've experienced in the intervening decade. We won't do that—the portrait will hang on the most conspicuous wall of our dining room—but I appreciated the idea, the same idea I catch a glimpse of looking at my baby girl in a hammock: a life lesson to mind the moment I'm in because it vanishes continually.

"Yes, And." "Why Not?" Delightful things can happen when you don't say "No." / Rodney Wilson is either a pig farmer who writes or a writer who farms pigs. Either way, he’s got a freezer full of bacon and a finished manuscript, and he’s trying to sell both.

Roger Thurman / Guitar and violin repairman /

Roger Thurman, the head of Thurman Guitar & Violin Repair, knows the ins and outs of wooden instruments. A professional luthier (another name for an instrument repair professional) since 1971, Thurman has spent decades in his shop in Kent setting up guitars, stringing violins, selling tuning pegs and Fender student instruments.

Though a high-quality fix or set-up is a luxury in today’s economy, he has never thought about shutting his doors.

Since the ‘70s, Thurman’s been on the search for the ‘perfect’ sound. It was only a few years ago that he found it. The patented Thurman Multidimensional Sound Ports which feature two “three-dimensional” holes cut away on both sides of a guitar’s neck, making the instrument—he’s had it tested—nearly twice as efficient. Now used by luthiers all over the nation— and several violinists of the Akron Symphony Orchestra—Thurman’s mark on the craft proves, as he says, that “not all instruments are created equal.”

What initially drew you to the craft?

RT: It was after seeing [classical guitarist] Andres Segovia in Washington, D.C. Then, years later, I was at a social gathering with some friends, and I picked up this classical guitar my friend had and said, ‘I wonder how this is made.’ A guy there, an architect, recommended the book on the subject—Irving Sloane’s “Classical Guitar Construction”—to me. And that’s how it started. I read that book, and that was it.

All because of a book?

RT: Well, yeah! And I’m just interested in sound. I think I have an ear because of learning Vietnamese. So I think that I’ve always been interested in sound itself.

What’s this all have to do with your Sound Port guitar?

RT: I was doing a lot of research on the violin in the 1980s. I went to the Kent State Library, I went to the 14

library at Oberlin and the Lincoln Center Performance Library in New York. And I found a most interesting book, mostly in science formulas, describing how the violin bridge worked like an oscillator. I couldn’t make sense of the math formulas, but the writer detailed why violins are asymmetrically constructed. He said, ‘If all things were equal and everything was perfectly symmetrical, it would vibrate evenly up and down in all directions and actually cancel out its own sound.’ He also said all these instruments are air pumps: the more air they pump, the more sound they make. And I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s it!”

How much of this is a result of your work on countless instruments over the years?

RT: Well, I’ve made about 17 or 18 different instruments over the years, mostly copying Martin D-28s or the Torres-pattern classical guitar. They sounded good, and you get different results—but, to me, there was always something missing. There wasn’t enough sound there.

Tell me about your process as a repairman.

RT: I’m a detailed guy. I take the time to solve problems, and I don’t give up until I’ve got it.

Repair work is treacherous that way, because you’ll get an instrument in and say, ‘What is going on here?” It’s tricky like that. I’ve been doing this craft since 1971, and I’m still learning about getting fooled sometimes—or I forgot something I used to know. Sometimes you’ll get halfway through a problem and you’ll realize you’ve been doing it wrong the whole way.

Do you ever get a guitar or violin and think, What the heck did someone do to this?’

RT: Oh, yeah. I’ve seen a lot… There’s also a lot of bad guitar repair out there by people who just aren’t paying attention. Some of them do hideous things to these instruments.

Ever work with anyone famous?

RT: I worked on a guitar for one of the guys in Devo—his bass—one time. I also sold Bob Mothersbaugh a La Baye 2x4 guitar, the one that’s on some of their record covers—the one that looks like a two-by-four with a guitar neck on it. And a couple years ago I found a repair tag with [The Black Keys’] Dan Auerbach’s name on it.

Downtown Christmas History Walk and Trolley Tour with Joanna Wilson

I

f you would like to relive old holiday traditions and take a stroll down Akron’s memory lane, here is an event you won’t want to miss. For the first time, Akron2Akron Neighborhood Walking Tours is offering the Downtown Christmas History Walk and Trolley Tour to give locals a taste of the past.

On Saturday, December 12 from 4-6 p.m., Joanna Wilson, author of the new book “The Story of Archie the Talking Snowman & Akron’s History of Christmas Attractions,” will host this special event and take participants back to a time when the windows of O’Neil’s and Polsky’s were filled with magical holiday displays and downtown Akron was bustling with Christmas shoppers.

“I spent more than a year researching and writing about our downtown retail holiday attractions,” Wilson says. “The Downtown Christmas History Walk and Trolley Tour will reminisce about the glory days of our city’s past.”

On this outdoor walking tour, Wilson will discuss the history of retail holiday attractions in Akron, including downtown Akron’s two major department stores’ holiday window dis-

plays. As a special bonus, the tour will include a free trolley ride to Cornerstone Church at Portage Lakes to visit the life-size Nativity display that once decorated the downtown O’Neil’s marquee. There will also be an Akron2Akron after-party, which will benefit Akron’s Ronald McDonald House. “I’m most looking forward to standing in front of the Polsky Building and the former O’Neil’s storefront and sharing memories of the grandeur and tradition of the annual Christmas window displays,” says Wilson.

No stranger to Christmas, Wilson says that she spends most of her holidays promoting her latest book, “The Story of Archie the Talking Snowman & Akron’s History of Christmas Attractions.” “The book is filled with details about the magical, enchanting downtown Christmas window displays, the in-store attractions with fanciful Santa Land walk-through experiences, live clowns, organ grinders, TV celebrity appearances, holiday parades with giant balloons, puppet shows, and special events marking Santa Claus’ arrival at downtown stores,” says Wilson.

“I grew up in Cuyahoga Falls and made many trips to visit Archie the Talking Snowman at Chapel Hill Mall in the early 1970s,” Wilson says. “Even if I was too shy and afraid to speak to the 20-foot talking giant, he made a lasting impression on me.” She adds, “When Archie was rebuilt in 2012 at Lock 3, I was amazed at the dedication of the organizers and impressed by their spirit of tradition.”

The holidays should fill us with nostalgia, conjuring up fond memories, but hectic preparations for the season sometimes makes us lose sight of what is really important. Wilson prefers taking a more laid-back approach to the holidays. “For me, Christmas day is about simplicity, relaxing with my family, and enjoying a special holiday meal. I look forward to it all year long.”

Six holiday experiences to enjoy with the whole family Bright, twinkling lights in every window. Gorgeously wrapped gifts tucked under creatively decorated trees. The scent of cinnamon and pine teasing you at every turn. Familiar songs about roasting chestnuts and jingling sleigh bells playing on every radio station. These are all things to look forward to and enjoy during this very special time of year. Experience Quail Hollow Manor Quail Hollow Park’s 32nd Annual “Christmas at the Hollow” is an affordable, familyfriendly holiday experience, offering three evenings of fun attractions for adults and children alike. Located in the heart of Hartville’s Quail Hollow Park, Quail Hollow Manor invites you to spend an evening with your family in this warm, inviting setting.

Built around 1838, Quail Hollow Manor House was later owned in 1929 by H.G. Stewart, the executor of the Akron, Canton and Youngstown Railroad. The Medina Fair Holiday Lights Drive Thru is in its 14th year, and with help from local businesses, and organizations, including 4H, Cub Scouts, and other youth and church groups, Medina County Fair Board puts together this annual holiday event for the entire community. Approximately 3,500 cars and tour buses visit the holiday lights each year to enjoy this mile-long drive of festive displays.

Adults and children can marvel at approximately 125 handmade familiar and traditional characters, including penguins, snowmen, nativity scenes, horses and sleighs and Santa’s tiny reindeer. You might even get lucky enough at the end of the tour to catch a glimpse of Santa himself waiting with a handful of candy canes, greeting families, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

The Medina Fair Holiday Lights Drive Thru welcomes visitors through Sunday, December 27 at the Medina County Fairgrounds. The cost of this event is $7 per car, $15 per van and $50 per tour bus. Experience Sebring Mansion If you are a hopeless romantic, a visit to Sebring Mansion Inn & Spa is a must, especially during the holidays when Fireside Lunches and Dinners are served.

Village of Zoar

Experience t he Village of Zoar The traditions of the small Village of Zoar reflect a simpler time when German settlers came to the area to make a home for themselves. In Zoar, the heritage and history of the area lives on.

Christmas in Zoar is an annual event celebrating the many traditions of the earlier settlers in the area. The historic museums in the village are set amongst private residences, creating a unique community and atmosphere, where costumed guides will detail holiday traditions from Zoar’s past.

During your visit, listen to carols sung by area high school students, enjoy a relaxing horse-drawn wagon ride through town, watch the candlelight service and the tree lighting ceremony. Take something home from the Zoar Store, which offers Zoar ornaments and holiday ginger cookies for purchase.

Of course, children won’t want to miss meeting Belsnickel, a folkloric German Christmas character similar to Saint Nikolaus, whose job is to see which child was naughty and which child was nice this year.

Experience Hower House The beautiful Hower House, on The University of Akron’s campus, is a restored Victorian mansion built by John Henry Hower and Susan Youngker Hower in 1871.

The Hower family lived in the House for a century before graciously donating it and its contents to UA, on the condition that the house stay preserved. Hower House is now run by a small staff and a very dedicated group of volunteers, who like to call the House their “home away from home.”

Made up of community volunteers, the Holiday Committee decorates the mansion from top to bottom, adhering to a theme throughout the House. This year’s theme december 2015

is “Colours of the Season,” and visitors are invited to take a self-guided tour of the beautiful rooms.

After touring the mansion, take a walk downstairs to The Cellar Door, Hower House’s gift shop. There are so many gifts to choose from that deciding on just one might prove a difficult task. Enjoy a complimentary cup of wassail while browsing through a collection of unique items.

Each weekend in December promises a different themed holiday event. Beginning with a candlelight walk, events throughout the month include a visit from Santa’s reindeer, gift making with some very crafty elves and more. Doctors Who Do Good When you visit your doctor—for a checkup, routine procedure or even an emergency—the process of receiving care is pretty simple: fill out a form, show your ID, then read a magazine until you hear your name called. But for many throughout the world, oceans away or just down the street, getting medical attention is prohibitively difficult and, in many cases, totally impossible.

Now think back to your doctor and consider this: the medical professional who stands in front of you in that crisp, white coat took an oath to help the sick—all the sick.

Doctors tend to worry over health care issues more than most and, for many physicians throughout the region, this line of thought leads to action.

Many area doctors—too many to list in this feature—spend their scant off-hours providing health care and medical services to underserved popu-

lations with needs uncommon to most waiting-room occupants. They do it because it’s just what they do.

right here in the Akron area.

Some help globally, then return home to volunteer in their own communities.

Five medical professionals in The 330 utilize their skills in diverse areas of expertise to bring better health to populations where medical services are scarce. These local physicians take their techniques, resources and, above all, hearts of gold to people in need, serving far-flung locales like Haiti, Peru and Ghana as well as assisting the less fortunate

Though they don’t seek praise for the community service and philanthropic activities they perform, we should recognize the generous professionals who live among us. These are docs who do good, and they make Akron proud.

Dr. Jeff Kempf

Dr. Jeff Kempf has been an attending physician in Akron Children’s emergency department for 26 years. Recently his work has moved way beyond the emergency room walls.

“Six years ago the hospital started the Office of Pediatric Global Health,” says Kempf, who serves as its director. “Half of my job is still in the emergency department, half of it is international work.”

Kempf, along with wife Dr. Ellen Kempf, has personally done international work in places like Central America, Kenya and Ethiopia for years, but a trip to Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake found his global concerns snapping into focus. “I went and worked with St. Damien as part of that relief work,” he says, “and subsequently started going back.” Kempf established a network of nine North American hospitals to aid the pediatric hospital in Tabarre, Haiti. “We send residents and faculty, supplies, equipment, knowledge and aid to St. Damien to make it what we think is the best children’s hospital in Haiti.”

Kempf ’s collaborative provides necessary heart surgeries to Haitian children. “We’ve done eight open heart cases here in Akron over the past four years and have also started a program in Haiti to do surgeries there,” he says, adding that the end goal is a sustainable, Haitian cardiac center. Kempf and his wife regularly host patients in their home for 4-6 weeks while they recover. “I hope they feel loved and a part of our family for that period of time,” he says. He’s currently working on a program to deliver medicines to Haitian sickle cell patients.

“I think to be a doc is service work,” says Kempf. “I am so lucky and so fortunate to do what I do. I feel an obligation to go and do work for others.”

Dr. Charles Fuenning Dr. Charles Fuenning is a pulmonary and critical care physician in his 30th year of local practice. Though his group, Unity Health Network, operates throughout the region, Fuenning himself is often found at Western Reserve Hospital—that is, when he’s not volunteering to help the underserved.

Fuenning volunteers his time in various ways, but when asked to talk about them, he offers up the work of others. “Mark and Sue Meyer are primary care doctors with the Pioneer Medical Group,” he says. “They have for years gone on mission work around the world, taking health care missions, and realized that there’s just a great need here in our own backyard.” Fuenning himself is very active in the resulting community outreach, known as Faithful Service Care Center.

“Consider it urgent care for the underserved population,” he says. “We see patients that

come through and they have no health care, no physicians. We act as an emergency room, an urgent care for blood pressure and blood sugar, colds and sprains. And of course we triage and if there’s something more serious, we’ll address that.”

“I think, if we have the skills, we should be able to help our fellow man, woman and child,” says Dr. Fuenning. “Here’s a great opportunity where we can help our fellow citizens. And it’s not just physicians—we have nurses, medical assistants, front desk people, pharmacists and chaplains.

Heck, the guys that painted the walls and supply the food. It’s a real community effort.”

“I think that there will always be a need in the community for people who have fallen through the cracks,” he says. “They just need help, which is sometimes hard to do in the midst of a private practice or hospital setting.”

Dr. Amelia E. Laing When we reached out to Dr. Amelia E. Laing, a general obstetrics and gynecology physician at Aultman Hospital, we didn’t find her at the Canton medical facility. Rather, Dr. Laing was in Ghana, doing the work we wanted to know about.

In addition to her professional career here in Northeast Ohio, Laing has established and is highly active in an initiative to improve the lives of women in Ghana. “I’ve established, administer and help provide care at a women’s health-only hospital in Accra, Ghana,” says Laing. The facility, known as the Obaatan Pa Women’s Hospital, is an extension of the Serving Women in Ghana effort.

Laing’s vision is largely two-fold: to provide basic women’s care in an area where the lack has too-long resulted in avoidable tragedies, and to support local midwives as they administer care. Another key arm of the project is providing preventative care by administering breast and cervical cancer screenings and giving training to

local health teams.

“I think it is important for physicians to donate their time and skills if they have them to spare,” says Laing.

“None of us are completely responsible for our situation in life, and as social beings who live best in cooperation, we all have some responsibility to help others as we can.”

Laing, who also volunteers as a Rotarian in the Orville community, truly believes in the power of helping out whenever possible. “An awareness of a large, unmet need for health care, and a sense of being very fortunate as a couple, with the ability to help make things better for people who have unbelievably difficult lives to begin with, led my husband and myself to do this,” she says. “We have gained much satisfaction from the joy and improvement we have brought others with our efforts.”

Dr. Deborah S. Plate

Dr. Deborah Plate believes strongly in the power of teaching.

A board-certified family physician at Akron General, Plate builds better health through educating both her patients and medical professionals. “As a family physician,” she says, “we take care of not only the whole person, but we do a lot of health prevention.” Mentorship of younger health professionals is crucial, she says. “Role modeling is very important as we produce primary care physicians.”

Not content to limit her reach to patients and doctors, Plate takes good health to the airwaves, delivering health advice to the masses

via her weekly radio show, Akron General Health Connection on Cleveland’s News Radio WTAM 1100 AM (Saturday at 7 a.m.).

“That has been an amazing experience,” says Plate. “We’re getting information out there that’s accurate and timely with what’s going on in our community. We have great phone calls, great texts.”

Plate also believes strongly in community service. “If we can put out docs that have some sense of social responsibility,” she says, “I think we will achieve a well-rounded physician.” Plate models this social responsibility, staying active in communities far and wide.

“Our group is family docs, so we went with a group called Academy of Family Physicians,

and we’re affiliated with an international group, Heart to Heart International.” Plate and AAFP oversee international training tracks, sending residents to places such as Guatemala and Peru to teach and provide medical services. “We developed this to provide patient care in small clinics in villages,” she says. “These clinics are ongoing, so we don’t just land there for a week—we land in the midst of a clinic that’s always there. We not only see patients, but we also educate their clinicians. It’s been a win-win for both our residents and for the countries that we visit.” Plate works for the underserved at home too, taking residence at Akron Inc.’s clinic for homeless women and children.

Dr. Dean Mayors Dr. Dean Mayors is a general surgeon physician with Akron Summa Health Services, specializing in cancer and hernia surgeries. It’s the latter expertise that found him landing halfway around the world back in 2006.

“There was a chaplain at Akron Children’s Medical Center whom I knew, his name was Patrick Allalah,” says Mayors. “He was a native Ghanian.” Mayors describes a phone call from Allalah as one that changed his life. “He’d always wanted to bring a medical mission back to his native country and needed a surgeon. He called me, right in the middle of busy office hours, I can remember the day, and it took me all of about 10 seconds to say yes.” For Mayors, the call addressed a deep desire that hadn’t yet found an outlet. “You study, go through all the science courses, and you’re lucky enough to get into medical school and a residency, and all the missionary desires kind of get thrown onto the back burner. It’s still something you want to do, but you’re in the process of raising a family, getting married—interests tend to turn otherwise.”

Allalah’s call led Mayors right into the footsteps of his heroes, medical missionaries like Albert Schweitzer and Thomas Dooley, taking his physician skills to help in a poverty-stricken country.

“Ghana is a very poor, small country in sub-Saharan, equatorial Africa,” he says. “We basically fulfill their needs, because there is no full-time surgeon there. Hernias are epidemic in that area; chronic wound care is another huge problem.”

His passion for service work is seeing long-term results as well, with his two oldest daughters—both medical professionals—accompanying him on Ghana trips in recent years. “I’m very pleased to see it’s moving on to the next generation and hopefully will continue.”

The technological age has made it easier to access patient information, which increases safety and allows for lower costs, less duplication. Also because of advancements in technology, we are diagnosing and treating multiple disease states with minimally invasive techniques as opposed to surgery.

I think that this time is the Renaissance of medicine. There are so many things changing so quickly. I think in the future, care will be delivered virtually and quickly.

I am very fortunate to be able to work with 35 other subspecialty orthopedic surgeon partners in my group, and I work with an excellent support staff of bright and energetic people. I honestly enjoy going to work every day.

Are there any projects you are working on or studying? If so, what?

I typically publish one or two research articles every year on a wide variety of foot and ankle topics. I have started doing ankle replacements recently, as the technology has improved significantly in the past year or two.

Orthopedic implant technology has improved dramatically over the years. The quality of joint replacements, fracture treatment devices, arthroscopic technology and orthobiologics is amazing.

What is the future of your field?

The future of orthopedic surgery is bright. The current technology is excellent and getting better. With people living longer healthier lives, we can continue to keep most people active with less pain.

Is there a memorable moment that has stuck with you?

As with most Orthopedic surgeons, I am fortunate to have memorable moments at work on a regular basis. Although we can't make everyone perfect or better, we definitely improve the quality of life of most of the patients that we treat.

Are there any challenges in the profession? What are they and how do you overcome them?

The main challenge in the future will be continued access to quality health care at an affordable price. This will affect all areas of healthcare and it’s quite evident that there is not a simple solution.

My specialty is geriatric medicine. I generally see patients who are frail and having trouble with something related to aging, such as falls or memory loss.

What is one aspect of the job that you find rewarding?

Often, my patients have been told that the problem they are experiencing is "normal for your age."

I like to bust that myth! I like when stopping certain medications improves memory, when physical therapy improves strength and balance and therefore reduces falls, when depression can be treated, etc. This sounds odd but I especially like it when I can walk through a patients decline with them, such as in the case of Alzheimer's Disease, and be there for the patient and family along this journey.

In your opinion, what's the future of your field?

There is job security in geriatric medicine! Just look at any demographics and realize that the fastest growing population segment are the over 85's. We will need people who know how to care for older adults in all medical fields—doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists. Geriatrics is a challenging and rewarding field—not for the faint of heart—and I am hoping we can recruit more people who are interested in this kind of work.

Are there any challenges in the profession? What are they and how do you overcome them?

I think the biggest challenge in geriatrics is the need for time. There is no way to care for a complicated 80-year-old on 10 medications in a 15 minute office visit. You need time, and a team, to really do this right. Fortunately, Summa recognizes this and supports innovative models of care that allow for this time.

With over a decade of professional practice, Dr. Crespo is dedicated to excellence in both the patient experience and clinical care. With a diverse skill-set and passion for learning, Dr. Crespo is an expert in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, including implants, dentures, root canals and oral surgery.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Crespo earned her undergraduate degrees in Science studies from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and Nursing studies from the University of Puerto Rico. She then went on to earn her advanced doctorate in Dental Surgery from Ibero-American University in the Dominican Republic in 2005. Following graduation, she completed two years of general practice residency at Northside Hospital Valley Care System, as well as at Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Ohio. Dr. Crespo remains in-network with most major insurance providers to ensure the majority of her patients are able to utilize their dental insurance coverage.

Dr. Crespo is fluent in English and Spanish and is currently a member of the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry. Along with being an advocate for oral health, she believes in overall fitness and has completed two marathons, one 50K and 20 half marathons. My specialty in medicine is dermatology, skin cancer surgery and cosmetics.

Are there any memorable moments that have stuck with you over the years?

I’ve had a lot of special moments and a lot of fun things have happened throughout my profession.

On a personal level: meeting my husband (who is also in this profession), meeting some of my colleges. But this past year we opened our own practice and it’s been quite special. We took on 40 plus employees and we have nine providers.

How has the medical field evolved throughout your career?

I would have to say the amazing advances in the National Genome Project. Being able to map genetically all of these genes that are correlated directly to diseases that we see everyday. Because we are able to

What is one aspect of the job that you find rewarding?

The aspect that I find most rewarding is that my field is all encompassing in the care of women in all stages of life—from adolescence to pregnancy to menopause.

How has the medical field evolved throughout your career?

OBGYN practices in our local community are joining big hospitals to stay in business. It is increasingly tough to stay independent. OBGYN Associates is one of the only independent practices around. I can honestly say that our niche is personalized patient care. Because of our independence we can focus our practice on building relationships with patients. Our patients are like family to us. We see grandmothers, mothers and their daughters. You are not a number at our practice.

One of my staff will answer the phone and you won't go through prompts to get a real person on the phone.

What is one aspect of the job that you find really rewarding?

The patient relationships that I am able to make. Skin cancer is the bulk of my specialty. We do a procedure called Moh’s surgery and your patients are there all morning or all afternoon. It’s a way to remove skin cancer by taking the least amount of normal skin, while getting the highest cure rate. Because it takes [a long time], you get to spend hours with your patients. They are wide awake, so they talk to you and you talk to them and they tell you about their life and ask about yours—a lot of times when you get skin cancer, you get more than one, so I’ve known some of these patients for over 10 years.

It’s the ability to do a positive thing in medicine but obtain that personal connection with your patients.

Are there any major challenges in your profession?

I would say the biggest challenge that has changed dramatically since I finished my residency and internship has been the introduction of the electronic medical record and the large amount of patient data that is required by physicians in order to complete an office visit. I think a lot of the benefits of the electronic medical records help us at the pharmacy level, as well as at the education level for the patient, but at the same time the patients get very frustrated because of the loss of face-to-face contact.

OBGYN Associates Are there any new challenges in the profession?

Yes, technology. New uses of electronic communications help us to stay in contact with our patients. We have electronic medical records. Patients are able to quickly communicate with us via their own patient portal. They can see their own test results and be more involved with this information and their care. We are ahead in our field in technology, with all of our technology.

We have worked hard to maximize the use of our electronic medical records. Even though we are not owned by the hospital, we are still part of a network of the doctors in our community with both our hospital systems. This enables us to communicate effectively and eliminate unneeded tests, allowing us to be good stewards of medical dollars. We are careful that new technology does not replace personalized attention to your care.

Are there any projects that you are working on or studying?

Currently I am very interested in hereditary cancer screening, through genetic testing. Patient risk assessments can identify patients at risk for hereditary cancers such as breast, ovarian or colon cancer. I can specifically target those who need genetics testing and help an entire family.

As a physician, we can change our management to track them when their risk is above normal.

What do you see as the future of your field?

The field will most likely be broken into more subspecialties. This is good and bad, because we will no longer have the doctors who deliver babies and also, later, can perform a hysterectomy.

Greystone Cellars

The Greystone Cellars wine has been produced exclusively for the Culinary Institute of America since 1995. Located in the old Christian Brothers Greystone building within the heart of Napa in St. Helena, Calif., the building has been home to the Christian Brothers Winery for over 107 years.

Since 1990, it has also been home to the west coast campus of the Culinary Institute of America and the Wine Spectator’s Greystone restaurant. The school is dedicated to courses for professionals in the studies of culinary arts and wine classes. The winemaking skills of Kimberlee Nichollas and the experience of President Bryan Del Bondio, both from Markham Vineyards, have been combined with CIA to produce Greystone Cellar wines.

By working together, they have created wines that are easy to drink and very approachable for everyone to enjoy with any meal. The labels for Greystone Cellars feature a different corkscrew on each wine. “The winemaker of the Christian Brothers, Brother Timothy was an avid collector of corkscrews and his collection, one of the most impressive in the world, is on permanent loan to the CIA at Greystone.” “When you purchase a bottle of Greystone Cellars a portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, a not for profit institute of higher education.”

The Greystone Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes grown in the Lodi, Calif. areas of Sacramento Delta and San Joaquin.

The tasting notes from the winery describe the Cabernet Sauvignon as having “lively blackberry, vanilla and jam aromas that give way to a lush, juice palate loaded with sweet berry fruit.” This wine pairs well with a variety of foods, so try it with braised short ribs, or filet mignon with mushroom sauce, with aged gouda for the cheese course.

The Greystone Chardonnay is described as having freshly cut apple aromas with roasted nuts and citrus flavors. This wine pairs well alongside mussels with white wine sauce, or try it with your grilled salmon. For a cheese selection, pair this beverage with a ripe camembert.
