This is on La Isla Mujeres where I got engaged. On the plane on the way to Mexico, I looked at my recent Akron Life & Leisure magazine (June 2009) and saw that in the travel edition, my trip destination was one of the feature articles. I had no idea and decided I had to get a photo with that magazine edition while on the island. Then, when Jim proposed I really thought it would be neat to remember it all. If you look close you might be able to see the beautiful engagement ring. It had belonged to his grandmother.

Manna Huang, a local artist and art teacher (www.mannahuang.com), recently traveled to Guangzhou, China.

Guangzhou is nicknamed Five Goats City because of a legend that five fairies and their five goats came and brought prosperity to the land, and the five goats stayed and turned into statues as a blessing to the city.

Here Manna is pictured in front of the city’s famous Five Goats statue.

Historically, Guangzhou was spelled as Canton. According to Wikipedia, Canton, Ohio actually picked up its name from this Chinese city.

Here are pictures of the magazine at Octoberfest in Munich, Germany in the Lowenbrau tent. The first picture is of my son, Chris Lawver, his wife Mary, and our grandson CJ, in traditional German attire. My son has 19 years serving our country in the United States Air Force, (yes, I am very proud) at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany. He is a 1990 graduate of Akron Kenmore High School. Mary has also been in the Air Force for the same amount of time. The second picture is of myself and my husband, Eugene holding Akron Life & Leisure. It was a great time, and the magazine enjoyed its adventures in Germany.

My Dog Juneau

J

uneau came to me just as most of the other dogs in my life have—by accident.

She came into my life at a time when I didn’t have a dog, didn’t want a dog and wasn’t looking for one, either.

In July of last year, my previous dog Keesha died at the age of 14. She and her brother Indy were littermates who also came into my life by accident.

They were remnants of one of my son’s failed relationships. She got the furniture; he got the puppies. He moved in with us until he could find a place to live, and when he left we kept the dogs.

But they weren’t the only animals who have shown up, uninvited, and lived their entire lives with me.

My grandfather was afraid of two things in this world: deep water (he didn’t know how to swim) and dogs. When I was a young boy, he filled my head with stories of mean dogs that had barked at him, chased him and bitten Juneau him throughout his life. So when my parents presented me with a small black dog (a rat terrier) on my 7th birthday, I was very apprehensive. But that fear evaporated in a split second when “Blackie” (kids aren’t very original) pulled at my sock as I was getting ready for school the morning after my birthday. She wanted to play. I didn’t know that dogs played. I just assumed from what my grandfather told me, that dogs only barked and bit. From that day forward, Blackie was my best friend throughout my adolescence and my teens. When I left home at the age of 19, I cried more for the loss of my relationship with my dog than anything else. Many years later, after I had returned home with wife and child, I received a letter from my mother telling me that Blackie had been hit by a car while they were on vacation in Florida. I was 23, and Blackie was 16. I’m glad I wasn’t there when it happened. The letter removed me from the scene and deadened the pain I would have otherwise felt.

The next dog to wander into my life was Gretel. She was a shepherd/collie mix with the best traits of both breeds.

She followed my daughter, Missy, home from school one day. The kids, Missy and her two younger brothers, petitioned me relentlessly to keep her. Gretel, being a puppy, wriggled and squirmed herself into my heart and our family. It wasn’t until many years later, after she had firmly planted herself into our household as the family dog, did I learn that Gretel was actually one of a litter that Missy’s best friend had been trying to find homes for. I had been hoodwinked, but in a good way. Gretel was the family dog for more than 17 years, and she was the first dog that had died almost literally in my arms from old age. I did cry.

Keesha and Indy were keeshonds with long beautiful coats meant to ward off the north winds in Holland, where they were referred to as “barge dogs,” because they lived on the barges that are home to many people in that country. They both had beautiful plume tales and were all around good pets. Two neighbor boys, Justin and Jay, videotaped the puppies over the entire summer of 1994. Years later I watched the video and fell in love with the puppies all over again. So when Keesha died in my arms during the summer of 2008, I was so broken hearted that I just didn’t want to fall in love with another dog for a long time. Though many friends urged me to get a dog, I wasn’t ready for another canine relationship. There was just too much pain in losing them.

Then my grandson Alex got a job at a pet store over the 2008 holiday season. On the bulletin board at the store was a short note advertising shepherd mix puppies, $20 each. Alex had always wanted a dog and he jumped at the chance. A man arrived at the store and in the back of his station wagon was a cardboard box with two shepherd mix puppies. Alex couldn’t make up his mind which to choose (now I wish he had taken both) so he closed his eyes and grabbed one, who turned out to be Juneau. What Alex had failed to take into account was the fact that his grandmother, with whom he lived, would not allow dogs or cats into her house. After several (continued on p. 11)

he Hilton Akron/Fairlawn made history this year as it became the only Hilton franchise in the world to reach 40 years in business under the same ownership. The hotel celebrated the milestone with an anniversary party on Oct. 2. Proceeds from the event benefit the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Foundation, which Hilton Akron/Fairlawn owner Rennick Andreoli co-founded in honor of his late godson.

ore than 200 guests attended The Melting Pot–A Taste of Many Nations, held at Fairlawn Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 24. The evening included ethnic dishes made by 16 local chefs, as well as a silent auction and entertainment

would not allow dogs or cats into her house. After several nights of sneaking the puppy into his room he found a friend who would let Juneau stay with him while Alex tried to figure out what to do next. Juneau lived in the friend’s garage for a few weeks, but when the friend was evicted, Juneau had to find a new home. This is where Papa, as I am known to my grandchildren, came in.

I had always said that I didn’t choose dogs—dogs chose me—which Alex reminded me of when he asked if we could keep Juneau for him until he could find an apartment for the two of them. I still didn’t want a dog, but I made a deal with Alex. If he would stay in college, we would keep the puppy until he was graduated and found a place of his own. One day Alex stopped by to play with the dog and to tell us that he had found a place of his own.

My heart sank. I had fallen in love with Juneau and was not about to give her up. I said, “You know, if you take this puppy to your new place, you will break your grandmother’s heart.” He smiled and asked, “It wouldn’t break your heart as well, would it?”

Since Juneau has entered our lives she has made us all laugh and smile every day. She loves us as much as we love her, and I don’t look forward to the day when she, too, will break my heart and make me cry. But if you have never had a dog you wouldn’t know what I’m talking about.

ore than 600 guests attended the American Cancer Society’s fourth annual Akron-Canton Cattle Baron’s Ball, held Oct. 3 at Quaker Station.

The western-themed event featured gourmet food, casino-style gaming, dancing and live music, as well as a live and silent auction. Steve Brubaker, Donna Robinson and Dave Yeager received the 2009 Hope Awards for their outstanding contributions to the fight against cancer. This year’s event raised $160,000 for the American Cancer Society and its mission.

Linda Conrad Her multi-faceted life is custom fit for Stan Hywet.

A

new gem has moved into one of Akron’s most beloved old settings. Linda Conrad was appointed president and executive director of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in October.

Conrad got her feet wet, literally, her first day on the job at the very rainy opening of Ohio Mart. Her 11-year-old schnauzer Bentley made his first visit to Stan Hywet that week too.

“Learning and listening” is Conrad’s first priority in her new role at Stan Hywet. “Creating a vision and strategy for the future” is soon to follow, she adds.

Conrad wants more people to view Stan Hywet as a part of their daily lives—not just a museum or a place for a one-time visit. Its motto, Non Nobis Solum (Not for Us Alone), “guides us well,” she says.

tions, brand management and business development at Walt Disney World.

Most recently, she headed up the retail and attraction division for Coca-Cola leading in operational development and implementation of the 92,000 squarefoot World of Coca-Cola Museum, which opened in 2007.

The daughter of Michigan Christmas tree growers and teachers, Conrad is delighted to be part of Stan Hywet’s “Deck the Hall” celebrations this year.

In addition to the treasured collections inside the mansion, the event includes musical performances and ice carving demonstrations on selected nights and an elaborate array of outdoor decorations and lights. It’s “sure to put us and everyone who visits into the holiday spirit,” she says.

A design aficionado, Conrad enjoys fashion and had her own interior design studio in the Blue Ridge Mountains. An avid gardener, she has a love of all kinds of flowers as well.

Relocating from North Carolina to Northeast Ohio is a homecoming of sorts for Conrad and her husband of 30 years, Ed. The couple lived in Westlake from the late 1970s until 1991 while she worked in the Cleveland area for Higbee’s and he worked with Conrad’s, his family’s tire and car care business.

That company’s long-term affiliation with Goodyear is another coincidental link between Conrad and the mansion’s former residents.

The Chriskindl Market, now in its sixth year, is back too. Despite budget cuts that precluded the city’s hosting of vendors from Chemnitz, Germany, three German vendors are expected to return on their own with hand-made items from the Erzgeberge Mountain area. As of AL&L press time, the city was actively seeking other vendors to round out the Chriskindl offerings with hand-crafted items representing diverse cultures.

Lock 3 will also become the city’s major collection point for new toys, gently used winter coats and non-perishable food items to be given to needy families through the Victim Assistance Program, Furnace Street Mission and Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. Old parking meters, painted in bright colors and placed at the venue, are being recycled as collection points for givers who want to help Haven of Rest Ministries and the Salvation Army.—JD

“Prayers for Peace,” an animated video produced by Medina native, Dustin Grella, is a reflection on the life and death of his younger brother, Devin, who was killed in the current conflict in Iraq.

On view at the Akron Art Museum through Feb. 14, the 8minute short uses pastel images, hand drawn on a slate chalkboard, to illustrate the fleeting nature of life and memories, drawn and erased over time.

Still photos, video and sound clips borrowed from Devin’s laptop, returned to his family after his 2004 death, add to the narrative of the work—an all-true story that Grella tried to paint as factually as possible.

Grella, who finished the video in May, says he hopes his work reminds people that “the numbers we hear on the news (reported as casualties of war) are attached to real people. Those are brothers and fathers and daughters. It’s easy to lose track of that,” he says.

More than 100 Weathervane Playhouse friends and capital campaign donors had the rare opportunity to meet award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis at a reception in her honor on Oct. 7. Dukakis served as celebrity chair of the theater’s capital campaign.

Best known for her performances in films like “Steel Magnolias,” “Mr. Holland’s Opus” and “Moonstruck,” where she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as Cher’s mother, the 78-year-old actress also has a long history in and love for live theatre.

“Olympia is primarily a theater actor,” John Hedges, Weathervane’s executive director, says, adding that her willingness to lend her name and come to Akron at her own expense was typical of Dukakis whom he describes as “gracious and wonderful and fun.” She came away from the reception “feeling the sense of energy” that surrounds the Weathervane these days.

Hampshire. He had a small role in “The Cherry Orchard” playing opposite Dukakis in one scene. She had the lead in that play. The two have kept in touch and Hedges has followed her career ever since.

October was a big month for the playhouse as it celebrated its 75th anniversary at a Diamond Cabaret/ 75th Anniversary Party gala on Oct. 3. Around 200 people attended Weathervane’s first big party in its newly expanded public spaces, according to Hedges. That event raised more than $50,000 for the playhouse.—JD

New in Town Sushi and sandwiches • An eclectic new restaurant featuring Thai and Japanese cuisine opened in downtown Akron near Canal Park—in the location of the former Piatto. Cilantro Thai & Sushi Restaurant, at 236 S. Main St., had its grand opening on Oct. 16. Cilantro Thai chefs use no MSG, all fresh ingredients and hand selected sushi. Most dishes come with spice levels from 0 to 5. The restaurant is open weekdays for lunch from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Dinner hours are 5-9:30 p.m. on weeknights; Friday from 5-11 p.m.; Saturday, 4:30-11 p.m. and Sunday, 4:30-9 p.m.

• The fun and funky selections at Highland Square’s new Mr. Zub’s Deli at the Matinee are named after some of the owners’ favorite offbeat movie characters. If you want chips on your sandwich, say “Go Animal House.” For tater tots as a sandwich add-on, say “Go Napoleon”...you get the idea. Mr. Zubs, at 812 W. Market St., is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until way later than most other places in town. Monday through Saturday, you can grab a sandwich there until 3 a.m.; Sundays until 2 a.m.

Lockview Updates Menu • The Lockview, known for its signature soups and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches with ingredients like roasted red peppers, basil or jalapenos, launched an updated menu to celebrate its second anniversary in November.

New appetizers include a portabella mushroom, roasted garlic and cream cheese dip served with homemade tortilla chips. The Number 10: Havarti dill grilled cheese with pickles and red onion on rye, is one of the new sandwiches.

The restaurant carries refined top shelf liquors, imported and craft beers and a wide selection of wines. Located at 207 S. Main St. in downtown Akron, the Lockview is open Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.-midnight and Saturday, 4 p.m.-midnight. The bar stays open until 2 a.m. daily.—JD

Christmas at the Hollow

Celebration lights up manor and grounds at Quail Hollow State Park.

olunteer decorators from Hartville and neighboring communities are bringing a different theme to each room of the historic Stewart Manor just in time for Quail Hollow State Park’s annual “Christmas at the Hollow.”

Snowmen will invade the library and frogs will fill the balcony bedroom. The herb society is decorating Bart’s bedroom with naturals and Cheeseburger in Paradise is sponsoring a tropical room with flamingos and beach-bound Santas.

The festivities extend beyond the self-guided tour of the 40-room manor and onto the park’s scenic grounds, glowing with luminaries.

Visitors can take a stroll by the lighted gazebo or enjoy a wagon ride through the woods with a stop by the warming fire. They can makeand-take home natural ornaments at the craft station in the carriage house, and watch as Patrick Holbert of Dalton and “Lumber” Jack Riese of Massillon demonstrate their log-carving skills with chainsaws on Friday and Saturday nights.

In addition to the Christmas decorations in the manor house, there will be visits and photos with Santa (professional or takeyour-own), performances by school groups and a puppet team, plus wassail, cookies, cocoa and hot pretzels for sale. The Quail’s Nest Gift Shop will be open and Toys for Tots donations will be collected.

Shelly Quinn of Mogadore, volunteer association president and 14-year veteran of “Christmas at the Hollow” loves the way so many community members work together to make this event unique and memorable. It’s exciting and there’s something for everyone, she says.

After a 35-year run, first in Ravenna then in Akron, the beloved Carousel Dinner Theatre closed its doors for good this year.

According to news reports, employees were officially notified of the closing on New Year’s Eve, and the Akron Beacon Journal reported on the story in its Jan. 1 edition.

Financial difficulties were cited as the reason for the closing.

University of Akron fans enjoyed the first game at Infocision Stadium–Summa Field on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009.

Former Akron-Canton Airport Director Fred Krum died on March 3.

Mayor Plusquellic Survives Recall Election Local attorney Warner Mendenhall and the group Change Akron Now spearheaded the movement to recall longtime Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, bringing the issue to ballot in a June 23 special election. Akron voters showed up at the polls, many voting early, to overwhelmingly reject the recall. Then, during last month’s regular election, more than two-thirds of the city’s voters approved a change to the city’s charter, making it more difficult for future recall efforts by increasing the number of signatures necessary to get the issue on the ballot.

Another Banner Year for LeBron James Even without winning the NBA championship (we know it still hurts), LeBron James catapulted into new levels of fame in 2009, and brought media attention to his hometown. In May, he was crowned league MVP, accepting the award at his alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. In August, James brought the spotlight back to Akron. This time it was for the premiere of “More Than a Game,” the Kristopher Belman documentary that chronicles the story of James and his high school basketball teammates Sian Cotton, Dru Joyce III, Willie McGee and Romeo Travis. Akron was one of select cities chosen to premiere the film. Chicago, Beijing, Paris and London were among the other premiere locations.

Intermodal Transit Center Unveiled Metro RTA unveiled its new Intermodal Transit Center, equipped with solar panels and eco-friendly heating and cooling systems, on Jan. 18. Located at 631 S. Broadway in downtown Akron, the center offers riders increased comfort and convenience, providing shelter from the elements.

he ambiguous expression in her eyes gives you a bizarre urge to stare her down, hoping to catch her attention or shift her glance your way—just to solve the mystery of what’s on her mind.

Every detail of her complexion has been laid bare for all of us to judge. Still, we love her. She’s one of us; she’s ours.

And this fall, Chuck Close’s strikingly realistic, larger-thanlife painting, “Linda,” has been sharing her permanent home at the Akron Art Museum with a star-studded gallery of friends.

Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama are there. Close, his wife, Leslie, and daughter Georgia are there. Other family members and friends are there, too—a few dozen in all.

Called “Familiar Faces,” the Close exhibit includes pieces from public museums and private collections around Ohio. There are paintings, drawings, wide-ranging prints, photographs and works created from torn paper, fingerprints, even tapestry.

Then and now

Linda Rosenkrantz remembers when her friend Chuck Close asked if he could use her as the subject of a painting. It was the early 1970s and she had just gotten a frizzy perm. He wanted the challenge of painting her curls, experimenting with painting three layers—red, yellow and blue—to mimic the way process inks were used in printing.

Close took five photographs of Rosenkrantz and chose one to use as the reference art for his work. “If he had chosen a different one, it would have been a completely different painting,” she says.

It took Close 14 months to finish the painting of Linda. The curls did indeed present a number of unique challenges to complete.

Because Rosenkrantz and her husband, Christopher Finch, moved from New York to California shortly after Close started the painting, she didn’t really watch as the work took shape. When she went to see the finished painting on display

in Philadelphia, she remembers feeling a little overwhelmed. “It’s frightening to see a 9-foot face,” she laughs, “much less your own.”

Rosenkrantz hated the redness of the skin and the words like “ravines” and “craters” that art reviewers used to describe the lines and wrinkles on her face. But her 2 1/2 -year-old daughter’s reaction to the painting that day was a positive one. The moment she spotted it, she ran across the gallery to the wall where it was hanging and kissed it.

While many of Close’s subjects drastically changed their appearances after seeing their images magnified in his work, “this (painting) became my image of myself,” Rosenkrantz says. Whenever she visited New York, people would ask, “Aren’t you a Chuck Close?” She has worn her hair in the same style ever since.

These days, seeing her image frozen in time at age 39, looks pretty good to Rosenkrantz. And these days she looks at the work more objectively. “I see it now as a wonderful work of art,” she says. Close’s “Linda” is one of only seven color portraits done in this style.

All about the work

Close doesn’t take lightly the gift so many of his friends and family members give him when they agree to be a subject in one of his works. “Everybody’s vain,” he acknowledges. “When someone loans me their image, it’s a really generous act.”

Full of contradictions, Close describes himself as “a nervous wreck” and “a slob with a short attention span.” Focusing on labor-intensive pieces, methodically, one section at a time, gives him a Zenlike calm, he says.

Since the early days, he has made deliberate choices at every stage of his career to push himself and his art.

“Inspiration is for amateurs,” Close says.

“For the rest of us, everything grows out of work. If you wait for inspiration, you’ll never get a damn thing done.”

When elbow and knee joints are at angles greater than 90 degrees, blood circulation may be impaired.

When your thighs are parallel to the floor, and feet supported, there is less

risk of pressure on the back of the thighs. This type of pressure should be avoided due to discomfort. It may also lead to impaired circulation in the lower extremities.

Fighting the Flu How to avoid the spread of germs, illness in the office.

• Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle aches • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (though more common among children than adults) If you suffer from the symptoms above, do yourself (and your co-workers) a favor, and stay home. You’ll probably get better faster if you allow your body to rest, and your co-workers will appreciate that you didn’t bring your germs into the office.

very cold and flu season presents a constant battle against germs, but this year has caused even more concern as people take steps to prevent not only the regular flu viruses but the H1N1 virus as well.

This is especially true in the workplace, where many people often work together in close proximity. So how can you prevent yourself from catching the latest bug to go around? And if you do get sick, how do you know when to tough it out, and go to work anyway, or when to stay home?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention advises that anyone who is sick with flu symptoms stay at home, get plenty of rest and check with a health care provider as needed. Common flu symptoms include: • Fever (usually high) • Headache • Extreme fatigue

To avoid spreading illness, it’s recommended that you wait at least 24 hours after your fever has dropped before returning to work. When you do get back to work, be courteous and sanitize your desk, phone and other surfaces to rid them of any remaining germs.

Protect yourself Consider keeping these products handy at work: Kleenex Keep a box at your desk to cough or sneeze into as needed.

Hand-Sanitizer Use the alcohol-based gel after coughing or sneezing, and when you can’t get to a sink with soap and water, to keep hands clean.

Even if you’re not sick, it’s a good idea to regularly sanitize common areas that are used by many people in the office— copiers, light switches, door handles, microwave, coffee pot, etc. According to the CDC, germs are often spread when a person touches something that’s contaminated and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can live for a long time (up to two hours for some types) on surfaces like doorknobs, desks and tables. So avoid touching your face, and cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. And if you haven’t heard by now, don’t use your hand (which you’ll likely then use to touch another surface) to cover your mouth. Instead, cough into your elbow.

Disinfecting Wipes/Spray

One of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 15-20 seconds (about the amount of time it takes to sing a couple rounds

Vitamins Some people advocate for straight vitamin C. Others prefer a multivitamin or herbal supplement such as Airborne. Talk to your doctor and find out what he/she recommends to boost your immune system and ward off illness.

Cough Drops While they won’t prevent illness, cough drops can soothe the occasional dry, scratchy throat and suppress a lingering cough to make it easier to get through the work day.

A

fter nearly 28 years of practicing ophthalmology at Northeast Ohio Eye Surgeons, the eye center he founded in 1982, Dr. Lawrence Lohman remains as passionately committed to his profession as ever.

“It’s just the best job in the world,” Lohman says. “I think most people believe that of our five senses, sight is the most precious.

I certainly do. There is nothing more gratifying to me than restoring or improving someone’s vision. It’s a life-changing experience, and I get to be a part of that.”

Throughout his career, this fellowship-trained corneal surgeon, who graduated with honors from Denison University and attended The Ohio State University Medical School, has had countless opportunities to improve vision and lives. And while Lohman has performed tens of thousands of eye surgeries—cataract surgery, LASIK surgery and corneal transplants chief among them—a few patients stick in his mind.

There was the teenager whose eye he reassembled after it was destroyed from a paint ball injury.

And the young man who had a dream of flying airplanes, but couldn’t, because of his poor vision. He traveled from Minneapolis to Northeast Ohio, so Lohman could perform his LASIK surgery. The young man is now a fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force.

Then there was the medical mission trip Lohman took to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia this spring – his second visit in three years. In an attempt to help the desperately poor indigent population, he spent nearly two weeks performing surgery on patients with vision problems that were often severe.

Lohman found himself constantly humbled by the strength and dignity of people who live in primitive conditions with little access to health care.

Some people brought me exotic fruits and vegetables they had grown themselves. One lady tried to give me a chicken. “Lohman pauses, then chuckles, “Needless to say, I politely declined.”

Fortunately, for many injuries and illnesses, a trip to the emergency room is often not necessary. There is no magic formula for deciding whether you should go to an emergency facility, but using common sense and calling your family doctor first is usually wise advice.

hen Drs. Faisal Quereshy and Najia Usman decided to join forces at their Visage Surgery Center, the husband and wife team created the only combined cosmetic and dental surgery facility of its kind in the area. The couple recently changed the businesses name to Visage Surgical Institute to better represent their commitment to providing a full spectrum of advanced procedures.

There are five divisions under the new Visage umbrella. They include: cosmetic surgery, Dental Implant & Oral surgery, endodontics, a stateof-the-art image center and a skin care center. “My background is in dentistry. I later decided to go back to school to pursue my first love, which is cosmetic surgery,” explains Dr. Quereshy, the residency director of training for oral and maxillofacial surgery at Case Western Reserve and University Hospitals of Cleveland. His wife, Dr. Usman, is an endodontist (a root canal specialist) and together they offer an unprecedented level of patient care.

In fact, Dr. Quereshy is widely credited with revolutionizing the facelift.

He is the pioneer behind the “Q” Lift, a minimally invasive and extremely affordable method of restoring youth without the traditional downtime associated with extensive facial surgery.

“Because our procedures are performed on site, many of our costs have been dramatically reduced, making cosmetic enhancement much more affordable-and accessible,” he assures. Other procedures that are also popular at Visage are body contouring (liposuction) and jaw repositioning surgery.

Dr. Usman is an expert at “preserving teeth.” “We provide an extra measure of comfort to our patients by offering “painless” root canals with general sedation anesthesia, our “ENDO-ASLEEP” service,” she says.

At Visage, the doctors utilize advanced technology that makes it possible for them to perform procedures with absolute precision. “I can actually look inside of a patient’s tooth with microscope imaging to determine which course of treatment is best before moving forward,” she reveals.

The new imaging center boasts the latest Cone Beam CT Scan, which provides a 3-D image specific for evaluation of facial bones and, Dr. Quereshy says, makes it easier and allows accurate and high precision when surgically placing dental implants.

The skin care center helps patients prepare for cosmetic surgery and also offers laser surgery for veins, spots, rosacea, skin tightening, hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Visage’s licensed aesthetician is available for regular facials and skin analysis.

hey” say most accidents occur at or near our homes. Ironic, isn’t it?

Considering home is where we spend most of our time, it seems obvious accidents would happen in and around our house, while we do things outside or when we’re driving around town. It is equally obvious more accidents happen in winter rather than the summer months.

Common sense tells us preventing accidents is the best way to avoid injuries. What can we do to make our environments safer?

In Our Homes: * Remove and/or secure scatter and throw rugs. * Open blinds and/or curtains and turn on the lights, particularly on dark, gray days. * Move electrical, phone and computer cords out of the way. * Ensure stairways are clear of shoes, toys, clutter, mail, clothing, sports equipment, etc. * Use night lights in every room. * Install anti-slip strips and grab bars in showers and bathrooms.

In Our Cars: * If you’re the driver, insist all passengers wear seatbelts. * If you’re a passenger, insist the driver wear a seatbelt. * Install child seats correctly. * Avoid talking on cell phones while driving. If you must talk and drive, consider a hands-free device. * Avoid texting and driving at the same time. * Winter driving—keep an emergency kit in your

car—be sure it includes a flashlight with working batteries, a blanket and snow brush. * Winterize your car— change the oil, have the fluids and batteries checked, and get snow tires if necessary. * Keep the volume on your radio, CD player, MP3 player, etc., at a reasonable volume so you’re not distracted while you’re trying to turn on the heater, wipers, lights, etc. * Ensure the lights on the back of your car function properly.

Here, There and Everywhere: * Shoveling snow? Check with your doctor to ensure you are healthy enough to do that job. Even if you are, “shovel in shifts”— take breaks, try not to overload the shovel, don’t let your back do all the work.

Same concept with the snowblower—if you find yourself getting tired quickly pushing the blower—take a break. * If you’re lifting or storing boxes, use a ladder and have someone “spot” you to ensure the ladder is steady. * Enjoy winter outdoor sports? Do it right—warm up, first. * Skiers, snowmobilers, first-time ice-skaters, snowboarders, hockey enthusiasts—wear helmets and all other recommended safety equipment.

Taking a few moments now to ensure you and those you care for remain safe can save you a trip to the emergency room or a trauma center later. And that’s time you can spend doing things you enjoy—like planning next year’s summer vacation.

o be successful in any business, you have to build your network of contacts. While there are a number of ways to meet potential colleagues, associates and friends, one of the best ways is by joining local organizations that allow members with similar interests or life paths to interact and form connections, not only in the business world but personally as well.

Membership to multiple groups allows you to widen your circle of contacts and become more knowledgeable about the community. Here’s a look at four local women’s organizations that can help you forge friendships and expand your business opportunities.

KNOW

(Knowledgeable Network of Women) The KNOW began in January 2004 with a vision to create a synergy and format where all businesswomen could grow professionally. The group hosts quarterly luncheons, providing top-notch speakers who discuss current issues of today’s businesswomen. In addition, the KNOW offers members-only events to help build stronger relationships and provides an avenue for referrals and a place for future leaders to find mentors.

According to Theresa Byers, program manager, the group has 210 members, all of whom are businesswomen and members of the Greater Akron Chamber. Byers says any woman who is looking to gain professional knowledge and advancement in her career and in the community would ben-

NAWBO Cleveland serves Northeast Ohio, and includes 110 women who own all types of businesses from professional, servicebased organizations to manufacturing and construction-based businesses.

“We really believe that women business owners need to connect with each other to learn more and grow,” says Liz Radivoyevitch, vice president of marketing. “We offer seminars and speakers to help business owners learn how to market their business, manage finances, gain access to capital, develop leadership skills and other abilities to grow their businesses.”

NAWBO Cleveland hosts monthly chapter meetings in Independence as well as monthly networking luncheons in Akron. Each year, the group honors successful Northeast Ohio women business owners with its annual gala event, in addition to other networking/social activities and membership drives.

WITAN

(Women in Touch with Akron’s Needs) Founded by seven women in July 1943, WITAN is not your average networking organization. WITAN is service-based, rather than business-focused. Its mission is to educate members on civic

“WITAN is a dynamic nonprofit organization, composed of energetic women of all ages and walks of life who embrace civic responsibility in our community,” says Katie Wells-Goodwin, WITAN president. “It provides friendships, support and opportunities for networking among successful women leaders in the community.”

Membership in WITAN begins in a conditional membership year when prospective members learn about the requirements, functions and fun within the organization, Wells-Goodwin says.

Women Build Million-Dollar Businesses

T

Women-owned firms contribute nearly $ 3 trillion to U.S. economy.

he Center for Women’s Business Research reports that 10.1 million firms are owned by women and one in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is womanowned.

Women are starting businesses at a rapid rate, and many have targeted a goal of $1 million in revenue. Marsha Firestone, Ph.D., president and founder of Women Presidents’ Organization, states that only 3 percent of all women-owned businesses generate $1 million plus in annual revenues. The good news is that the million plus firms are growing faster than the smaller firms.

There are many challenges in growing sales to a million, but over the years I have determined five important components to help in this process: Scalable

The business model needs to support large growth. A small catering business can only grow in the region. A small business producing and selling a sewn product is limited in size without employees. The expansion of the service or the product needs to be possible beyond the use of an owner’s time.

Passion

Women entrepreneurs need to have a passion for what they do. It is hard work

and if there is no passion it is easy to decide that now is not the right time, or it interferes with doing something else. With passion the hard work seems worthwhile.

Best

Being the best at what you do is essential. It provides the substance upon which the business is built. Pet rocks are a fad. Women owners want to build a solid company that has longevity and can be sold in the future.

Customers

There needs to be a market for the product or service. Those customers need to be ready to spend dollars to buy what you offer. And they need to be willing to spend a higher amount because women owners tend to deliver very high quality services.

Business Background

Owners need to have a business background or be willing to take the classes and get the help needed to build a business. For example many services could be provided within a corporation and done quite well. But if you are going to do that work independently then you need to wrap a business around the service.

Looking at these five components, scalable is top on the list. To get to the million in revenue requires a way to replicate each sale. Providing a service by yourself or producing a product without employees can only be grown to the size that you can handle alone. With added

growth you will run out of time at the end of the day.

Traditional ways to scale a business involve hiring employees to deliver services or manufacture products.

Acquisition will provide fast growth.

Adding new services/products or growing in new geographic areas are other traditional ways. Special ways to scale a business include offering a business opportunity, franchise, dealer/distributor, licensing and others.

New ways to grow a scalable business can be very exciting and also appealing to many women owners who choose to grow without employees. These include Internet companies such as member sites, affiliate sales, training programs or a blog with high traffic and sponsors. Sometimes a business is a match for training and certification services, private label, original characters or strategic alliances. I see more and more women starting a product design, marketing and sales company. They outsource manufacturing and warehousing.

Building a million-dollar business is difficult, but extremely worthwhile.

Picture you are building an organization that is scalable, fits your passion, you are really good at it, customers are ready to buy, and you have learned to wrap a business around it. This great business can be sold for retirement or passed to a new generation.

Doing difficult things is worth the effort. You will find yourself in a small category of people, working on difficult

I think that women have been become respected for their ability to multitask, and because of that ability have been placed into positions that were held solely by men in the past.

What changes do you foresee in the near future?

Women have become better at letting things go so that they have better balance in their lives. Younger men appear to embrace some of the domestic responsibilities that traditionally were the sole responsibility of the wife/mother. I see that as a positive for both sexes and for the business and political world.

I am confident that we will see more women leaders become CEOs of major corporations. Although girls and women have made remarkable progress, inequalities still exist. For example, women represent almost 50 percent of the workforce, yet only 10 percent of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are women. However, in the near future, I see women becoming the pivotal force in all aspects of business.

What gives you your competitive edge?

I have the ability to continually reinvent myself for various positions of leadership. While these roles of leadership were often challenging, they have provided me with numerous transferable skills, hands on experience and in-depth knowledge about being a woman in business. These skills and my experience have enabled me to attain success in my career as an executive.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

The best piece of advice I have received is to never give up and that all things are possible...The blessing of being the CEO of GSNEO is that I am now in a proactive leadership position where I can pass this advice along to others who are becoming tomorrow’s leaders.

Being a woman in my trade and earning superior recognition from not only my customers, but from my competition/comrades in exterior home remodeling.

Your biggest mistake?

At one point, 10 years ago, trying to expand my company and letting others sell for me. The customers liked the salesmen, but I felt I lost that communication with each and every customer. I also found that those particular jobs had more issues throughout the estimating process and the job itself.

How do you think women have changed the world of business in the last 10 to 20 years?

We are slowly being taken seriously. Due to women’s attention to detail and thoroughness at making everything run smoothly and completed timely, we are becoming a threat to what was then considered a “Man’s World.” Behind a lot of very successful businessmen was a very thorough “secretary.”

Well now those “secretaries” are deciding to move on and take the initiative to do it their way and receive the recognition and spotlight of those then coveted “man” jobs/positions.

If you could offer one piece of advice to women just starting out in the business world, what would it be?

Don’t ever let anyone tell you “You can’t.” It is you, and you alone, who can find out what your limitations are!

Pat: Businesses are fragile. We have survived 85 years with many ups and very few downs. You can’t ask for much more. We had a fire in 1981 that just about destroyed our building and most of our machinery. We all worked together and made it through this difficult time. Otherwise, we would not be here today. So, one of our successes is working together. The other would be adding other products that our customers could use such as hygiene paper products, soaps and apparel items.

What has been the biggest struggle you have faced as a woman in business?

Betsy: I find I was not taken seriously. People do not always realize you can balance work and family, and still contribute to the success of the business while continuing to be a valued team member.

What are your personal business goals?

Bertha: To develop strong leadership that can carry out our vision and values long after I’m gone.

How do you think women have changed the world of business in the last 10 to 20 years?

Pat: We care more about the details and taking care of others naturally such as our customers and employees. We

understand the importance of a company with a good culture. It has changed the way we look at business.

How do you think women approach business differently than men?

Deb: Women have more heart. They consider their employees as a whole and are more family oriented.

Pat: I have been fortunate to have many role models. I learned from my parents. My brothers had successful careers and I watched them. When I came to Liniform, Ed Good made a huge difference in my life; he is my mentor.

Most of what I have learned came from Ed and from Norma Rist.

I was part of a reduction of workforce at Sterling Jewelers where I spent the last eight years. After a few months of splitting my time between a job search and creating a business plan, I decided to start Dashboard Accounting in April of this year.

What has been your biggest mistake in the business world?

Trying to control everyone. I once went to a seminar on “How to Manage Difficult People.” I was very excited about learning how to manage a few of the difficult people I was working with. Imagine how I felt when the big secret is the relationship is more important than the task. This information gave me the start in working with others in a different, more positive way. Looking for the strength in others and encouraging it, rather than focusing on weaknesses, results in success.

I work hard all year round to open a temporary retail store for the holiday season. This holiday season I will be in Summit Mall. My work is also represented at 23 specialty store throughout the United States, including stores in Arizona, California, Washington, Wisconsin and Chicago.

Who are your role models?

Philanthropic people and volunteers who pay it forward and give back. Time is as precious a commodity as money. Those who give either have my vote and are my heroes.

I have two role models. My mother and my grandmother are the most amazing women in my life. They both taught me how to be unique and think outside the box. They didn’t want me to be like everyone else. They believed in me as a designer and encouraged me to never stop learning. They taught me to be an independent woman and remind me every day that confidence goes a long way in life. And even though I choose a difficult industry to get into, they taught me to never give up my dreams. To see Lindsay Jean-Marie at New York City Fashion Week is my main dream, and I think I am getting closer to that dream every day.

Sweet Memories Local residents share family recipes and a little nostalgia.

B

aked goods and the holidays go hand in hand. Preparing something sweet is a warm way to welcome guests, and can serve as an inexpensive yet thoughtful gift. Of course, baking is also a great way to conjure up sweet memories, and make some new ones with friends and family.

For Martha Fousek, an independent living resident at Western Reserve Masonic Community, one such recipe is Fudge from Mama M’s Kitchen.

“When I was a youngster in junior high, the girls would get together for pajama parties, and mother would always make 92

this fudge,” Fousek explains. “As I got older, she continued to make the fudge for any special occasion. The girls really liked it. They called her Mama M and named it Fudge from Mama M’s Kitchen. They all wanted the recipe as they got older.”

Although Fousek and her husband, Allen, don’t have any children to share the recipe with, it still remains a special reminder of her childhood. “When I think about it, I think

about my family and my friends who enjoyed it,” she says. “Plus, who can resist fudge?”

It’s one of those special treats that’s perfect for giving as a gift, especially around the holidays. Fousek suggests decorating a small plate with a paper doily, then placing a few pieces of fudge on top and covering with saran wrap.

Fousek likes the way baking taps into her creative side, as do her other hobbies such as knitting and needlepoint.

“It’s something creative, and you have a nice finished product that you can enjoy,” she says.

Laurel Lake resident Roberta DeMarco enjoys making her favorite Anise “S” Cookies, which she says are a perfect treat to enjoy with a cup of coffee or dessert wine.

“I don’t know the exact point of origin of this recipe, but it’s the quintessential small, plump, slightly crumbly Italian cookie with anise seeds that I remember from my childhood,” DeMarco says. “The recipe first came into my life about 30 years ago when a friend gave me the basic recipe for the cookies that her family had made in their bakery in Cleveland...I substituted butter for shortening, and made a few other changes, so that the result is a more tender, buttery-tasting version of the original. The recipe as it was given to me made well over 500 cookies!”

The recipe has become a holiday staple for DeMarco, who has not only passed the recipe down to her three children but has also shared it with her parents and her husband’s parents. “It’s a special recipe for me because it reminds me of my parents and grandparents, my Italian ancestry and the friend, Rose, who shared it with me,” DeMarco explains.

DeMarco says she loves these cookies because they aren’t dry like the version she remembers from her childhood.

And to those who don’t like the taste of anise, DeMarco explains that because this recipe uses anise seeds, rather than flavoring, the taste is mild and smooth.

In addition to baking for the holidays, DeMarco enjoys fabricating sterling silver jewelry as well as forming wearable art pieces made from metal clay. And she prepares a full meal almost every night. “My husband is still working full time, so we like to spend some time together in the evening, discussing the December 2009

day and enjoying a homemade meal with a glass of wine,” she says.

“Traditions are so important in my life, so I really enjoy baking and I do it frequently,” DeMarco adds. “Baking is akin to a sacred rite for me, during which I feel a bond to the many women before me, and specially those in my own family, who baked the daily bread, sweets and holiday offerings for their families.”

Anise

“S ” Cookies 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature for easy beating 1 cup sugar 3 eggs at room temperature 1/2 cup whole milk at room temperature 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 Tablespoons baking powder Pinch of salt 2 Tablespoons anise seeds (add anise extract if you like a more prominent anise flavor) 5 cups all-purpose flour to start Yields about 115 cookies.

The dough may be prepared and refrigerated a day before baking. (Please see note at bottom of recipe.)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

One Step Closer to Home

In the bowl of a standing mixer (this would be difficult with a hand mixer) beat together the butter and the sugar until fluffy. Beat in the milk and vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time until well incorporated.

Whisk the baking powder and pinch of salt into the flour and begin adding the flour to the butter mixture one cup at a time until the mixture is smooth and putty-like (not dry or sticky) adding more flour if necessary. The dough will pull away from the sides of the bowl. (Do not worry if you have not used every bit of the 5 cups of flour or if you need more flour. It’s the putty-like consistency that’s important here.)

The dough can be refrigerated for a few hours or overnight. The refrigerated dough needs to sit on a counter at room temperature until it is malleable enough so that it can be formed into an “S” by hand. If the dough is of the proper consistency you most likely will not need additional flour for your hands. Remove a piece of dough—about a heaping tablespoon—and roll it in your hands to form a 3 1/2 “, cigar-shaped length, about the width of a fat pencil. Curve

confectioner’s sugar, enough water to create a smooth consistency and a few grains of salt. Sometimes she adds the grated rind of a lemon or orange to the sugar mixture, and during the holidays colored sprinkles may be used.

Note: Before baking, the cookies can be rolled in sesame seeds as the lengths are being formed, then twisted into the “S” shape. The sugar wash would not be used in this circumstance.

Fudge

from Mama M’s Kitchen 1 2/3 cups sugar 2 Tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup undiluted evaporated milk 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate bits 1/4 pound marshmallows (2 cups miniature) or 19 large marshmallows* 3/4 cup chopped nuts 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla

Mix sugar, butter, salt and milk in pan.

Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 5 minutes. Turn off and add marshmallows, chocolate, vanilla and nuts. Stir until marshmallows are melted. Pour into buttered 8 x 8 x 2” square pan.* Cool and cut into squares. *Note: Miniature marshmallows melt more quickly. A 9 x 9 x 2” pan is OK to use, but fudge will not be as thick.

Spin-for-Life Helping families who struggle to pay bills while dealing with cancer.

More than 50 stationary bikes were set up in the grand ballroom at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn for an inspirational 6hour spinning event that combined fitness with fundraising on Oct. 3.

The second annual Spin-for-Life raised nearly $100,000 for the Stephen A. Comunale Jr. Family Cancer Foundation. Nearly 200 people participated—riding individually or on teams throughout the event—and more than

40 volunteers helped out. In-kind gifts from Tom Luck of Lucky Shoes and Hilton Akron/Fairlawn helped make the event possible.

Connecting Dreams & Resources

The Comunale foundation offers emergency financial aid to Summit County families dealing with cancer. Individual grants of up to $1,500 are made for everything from mortgage payments to day care costs or other necessities not covered by health insurance.

Just three years old, the foundation made grants to more than 140 local families this year, according to Marisa Lamkin, foundation coordinator.

In addition to offering individual emergency assistance, the foundation provided Thanksgiving meals for 25 families this year. Earlier in the season, they co-hosted a horse camp with Victory Gallop for young cancer patients and their families.

efore two-car families or suburban shopping in T-shirts and blue jeans, moms and kids took the bus to downtown Akron to shop at O’Neil’s and Polsky’s department stores. Trips that included a lunchtime stop at O’Neil’s fanciest restaurant, the Georgian Room, were truly special occasions.

A popular restaurant any time of year, the Georgian Room really came to life around the holidays. Buzzing with shoppers, many dressed to the nines, it had a formal air of elegance with a friendly, welcoming touch.

Former waitress Doratha Jessie, now 92 years old, loved her time there. She started at the Georgian Room one Christmas season, shortly after she was married and stayed on after the holidays at their request. She continued working there until her retirement at age 65.

“We had a little red hen for chicken casserole—creamed chicken over mashed potatoes,” Jessie says. “Kids who wouldn’t eat anything else would eat out of that (hen).”

The fresh fruit salad topped with sherbet was a ladies’ luncheon favorite.

Jessie remembers a long-term customer who began ordering it when she was pregnant and having a hard time keeping food down. That lady’s son, Jimmy, grew up lunching with his mother at the Georgian Room. Through the years, Jimmy brought miniatures for her collection from a variety of destinations his family visited while his dad worked for Goodyear International. He even stopped by to see her when he was home from college on breaks.

“Heavens, we had a big menu,” Jessie recalls. “We really had good food, that’s for sure.”
