If I could, I’d like to suggest a refreshed article of one your publication did back in 2006.

The article and accompanying chart provided on “Greater Akron Suburbs at a Glance” contained a wealth of information. I still have the chart posted on our lobby wall in our City Administration Office, and I just recently removed the PDF of that chart from our City website. I’ve used it numerous times to show residents that we truly are not taxing them to death and to show visitors the attractiveness of our fair little city here.

So … it has been five years since you did the last one and the latest census results have been released. Hmm … what do you say?

Welcome to my world: divorced white female, three kids, mid-40s, medium height, medium weight, medium income, average house in a transitional neighborhood. That makes me pretty damned ordinary, all things considered. I have a couple of interesting traits though: First, I curse like the proverbial sailor, and second, I’m the spitting image of my father. With boobs.

not getting any younger. 2. Things have progressed from just a little gray around the edges to full-blown Clairol girl. 3. I have to work like a psycho butt monkey to keep the roll around my midsection from turning into a trademark Michelin.

4. I’ve become the Annie Oakley of the tweezer set, able to pluck chin hairs in a single, smoking bound. I don’t know what happened to all the years in between, from svelte and somewhat flexible to semi-comatose, from two-piece swimsuit to squeezing into a full-body Spanx® before getting dressed in the morning. (Retraction: I’m nowhere near semi-comatose; it just feels like it, some days.)

Anyway, I’ve been divorced a long time, and I’ve decided that it’s time to get serious about finding someone to spend some time with. I had one post-divorce relationship that lasted about three years, off and on, and that’s been over for a couple of years now, so I figure it’s time to get back on the horse. It also might be nice to have someone to go out with every now and again, besides my girlfriends, that is — since I’ve found that my girlfriends don’t want to hold my hand in the movie theater.

It gets old, being alone. I’ve done all the usual stuff, taken workshops to “find myself,” vacationed with my children (I’m not really sure where I got that brilliant idea), re-decorated, un-decorated and re-decorated again, and spent approximately three trillion years whining about the state of my sorry life with any number of my fabulous friends. I’m ready for the next step.

Then, you have to find a picture of yourself. Preferably without your ex, or your kids.

Or any of your extra chins.

I really don’t understand women who have been divorced for years and are perfectly content to sit in front of the television watching episodes of “Snapped” with their cat, perfectly pleased to read the latest Nora Roberts novel, women who get all juiced up to knit some scarves. I’m here to tell you that whatever the next step is, it’s not going to have anything to do with Nora, needles or yarn.

When I divorced, about 2.5 light years ago, I figured, no big deal, I’m still young, attractive, funny, smart — I won’t be single that long. The fabulous man of my dreams will appear — and I’m willing to do some of the legwork in finding my so-called soul mate.

So I signed up for one of those online dating sites. The commercials make it look so glamorous, after all, and my wellintentioned (and more-or-less happily married) girlfriends insisted that online dating was what smart women did to meet their mates. Also, the very fact that ads for online dating ran alongside ads with couples holding hands in matching bathtubs had to mean something, right?

Here’s how the online dating thing works: You spend 45 grueling minutes

answering questions about everything under the sun, usually using a scale of 1-5, with 1 being never and 5 being always. The questions/statements are similar to, “You would rather lose your big toe to frostbite than listen to Uncle Joe’s fishing story again.” That kind of thing. After that, you’re asked to write a snazzy intro paragraph, something like, “Hi! I’m desperately single! I have no idea what I’m doing! Don’t call me if you’re not nice!” Then, you have to find a picture of yourself. Preferably without your ex, or your kids. Or any of your extra chins. I know — it’s almost impossible.

Once the profile is up and “approved” by the site (which is a joke, because once they have your money, it’s unlikely you won’t be accepted), you wait more or less patiently for men to show up in your queue. Some sites have “winks” or other little ways that aren’t true emails but let you know they’re interested. This usually means they’re either a) too cheap to sign up for the site and have bumped into it on a “free weekend” or b) have no ability to read or write and can’t actually send emails. When one does show up — BINGO! — you respond, of course, tentatively.

The first guy I had an email volley with was super nice. We talked on the phone after a week or so — fairly common — and everything seemed to be going well. Then I found out his 6-year-old daughter still slept in his bed with him. Not just occasionally, but every night.

Oh boy.

I really have no idea what I’m getting into with this online dating thing, but I’m brave, and brash, I’m bold and, well, not that bright, I guess, because I’m forging ahead.

>> At 13 years old, Jeff Brunty, along with seven chickens and the support of his family, began turning his farming “hobby” into a lifelong career.

Not your average teen, Brunty made a lot of sacrifices along the way to grow Brunty Farms (for his 16th birthday, instead of a car, Brunty asked his grandparents for a chicken plucker).

And to raise cash to expand his Bath Township farm, Brunty worked parttime jobs in the construction and plastic industries.

Now, 500 chickens and 17 acres of land later, 25-year-old Brunty is able to work on the farm full time. He specializes in selling pasture-raised eggs, lamb, pork, duck, turkey meat, and organic fruits and vegetables, and his future plans include incorporating aquaponics (the growing of fish and plants in a greenhouse) and expanding into beef and dairy.

Amid all of his normal farm duties, Brunty also finds time to breed Buckeye chickens, which originated in Ohio and are now critically endangered.

With the help of volunteers and his girlfriend, Melanie, Brunty has created a profitable business that he hopes will remain in his family for a very long time. “I always liked the idea of working for myself, and I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors and animals,” he says.

“So it seemed like a good fit!”

Tell us about your love of farming.

JB: It’s a love/hate relationship. I love what I do, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve never been challenged with so many life lessons and tough learning curves in my life. Some days you get goose bumps when you look over the vivid green pastures and see the animals enjoying themselves. It’s inspiring how peaceful it is. However, there are days where it’s tough and all you want to do is fly to a beach and leave it all behind. But for the last 11 years, I’ve always found the love to overcome the hate!

You run a sustainable farm. What does that mean?

JB: We find a way to make a profit by letting the animals express their own character. Pigs can be pigs, chickens can be chickens, and so on. While doing this, we heal the land instead of stripping its nutrients or overloading it with waste run-off. It’s a balancing act. And customers want quality products they can feel good about buying; we put them first by being honest and letting them visit our farm. Without them, this whole idea ceases to exist. Last, but not least, is profit — because the bottom line is we need to make a profit to be sustainable and to grow. Without a decent profit, we cease to exist as well.

What’s your favorite thing about farming?

JB: You literally reap what you sow.

Knowing that if you work hard, it will eventually pay off is a good feeling.

Have any of your chickens ever crossed the road — and what were they trying to get to on the other side?

JB: [laughs] Oh yeah. We had a group of laying hens that would go out to the road, stop traffic and seem to get ‘cheep’ entertainment from it. But some would just cross the road to scratch up the neighbor’s flowers.

Which of your farm animals do you identify with the most and why?

JB: The pigs. They’re so awesome. They’re so smart and a challenge to raise. They seem to think they’re smarter than you and they know they’re stronger — and that makes for a dangerous combo on a farm.

How hard is it to make a living at farming?

JB: If you truly have a passion for farming and are willing to sacrifice, you’ll do just fine. It’s a lot easier now than 10 years ago. Thanks to the local food movement, farmers have been idolized and are heavily supported in urban areas.

Have you had to give anything up in order to farm?

JB: Where do I start? Friends, you find out how many you have real quick!

Relationships suffer not only with friends, but girlfriends and family. You’re too busy and can’t really do much about it.

Thankfully, I have a girlfriend who works beside me, and my family is overwhelmingly supportive. Vacations are gone for the time being, but I’m working on that for this winter. This question is endless.

When you work 16 hours a day, seven days a week, you give up a lot.

Sounds like there’s never a dull moment. Tell us about some of the crazy stuff that’s happened.

JB: Mel fell into about two feet of mud chasing pigs. I claimed it was mud; she said it was pig poop. We were moving them from their winter spot on the gardens to the pasture. Her boot got stuck, and she fell face-first.

That’s good stuff. Give us one more.

JB: The pigs got out and fell through the ice on the pond in the spring. That was crazy, but all the pigs made it out just fine.

Farming is great exercise. Which is the best workout?

Name one fruit or vegetable you wouldn’t eat as a kid — and one you won’t eat now.

JB: As a kid, I hated fresh green beans.

Now I pick them off the vine — and love them. I hate cabbage and tomatoes! I know, tomatoes. What farmer doesn’t like tomatoes?!

What are your thoughts on the way many farm animals are raised?

JB: Killing any animal to eat isn’t easy.

There’s no romance in it. Honestly though, if you can’t look an animal at least once in the face as it’s unwillingly giving its life for you to eat it, you don’t deserve to eat it. At our farm, it’s so inspiring to see how happy the animals are, so when taking a life, you know you’re making a difference — that animal had one bad hour of its life. That alone is worth supporting. The meat-packing business today is just like any other business: How do we make a profit off a product? The fact that it’s a breathing being doesn’t matter.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

JB: Umm ... the egg.

If I weren’t a farmer, I’d be …

JB: a beach bum.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

JB: Still being here. The sheer persistence to stay on a goal. I owe that to a lot of people.

When I’m not working on the farm, you’ll find me …

JB: I can’t answer this. I wish I could.

/ I’ve learned to understand workplace buzzwords because it is what it is, and keeping everyone on the same page is always a value-add. But it doesn’t mean I have to like it. /

>> The first time I was told to put something on my action items list, I

blinked hard and broke into a sweat. I was completely new to the professional world and furiously taking notes in some endless meeting with one of my feather glitter pens, marking the words “action item” with a star and a question mark and several underlines.

>> What the hell was an action item?

The thought of it scared me. Was this something I was supposed to know about? Did I drop the ball again? Copious note-taking became de rigueur for me during those first few months, constantly writing down the insider language used by the corporate suits.

I didn’t know it at the time, but I was getting a crash course on corporate speak.

As a marketing professional, I quickly learned some of the more meaningless phrases favored by corporate, phrases like innovative solutions and cutting-edge technology that tell a prospect … well … nothing. I still question the definition of innovative solutions, and it appears, unless you’re using a rotary phone, you can claim the use of cutting-edge technology.

After a few months of acquiring business acumen — another phrase the workplace elite loves to use to describe professional expertise — I had a better idea what the heck they were talking about. Six years later, I’m proud to say that while I’ve learned to understand the language, I try not to speak it.

In case you aren’t in-the-know (and want to say something without actually saying anything), I’ve compiled a list of what I consider the most overused corporate idioms.

• Action Items – This is a snazzy way of saying your to-dos or to-do list.

• Circle Back – I’m pretty sure my dog circles back when he’s about to poop, but

in corporate speak, this means you need to reconvene with someone.

• Onboarding – You can assimilate people to your corporate environment; you don’t have to onboard them like we’re all taking a cruise together.

• Hard stop/hard deadline – A deadline is a deadline. If it’s not a deadline, use a different word.

The Buzzword profit Rule: The profits of any company shall be inversely proportional to the number of vague industry buzzwords used by upper management, with bonus profit deductions for verbing (turning nouns into verbs, as in sourcing or incentivize).

those three people we fired last week and those software updates we can’t afford this year.”

• Game changer – sports cliché meets corporate buzzword. Let me use it in a sentence for you: “We were all just having a beer when the new guy came in and bought us a round of tequila.

That was a real game changer!”

• Sourcing – When did source become a verb? When people say they “source” themselves, it sounds like they’re turning tricks. Which would be really inappropriate workplace behavior.

I have to admit, I’m fascinated by people who use buzzwords. These corporate buzz-erds circle around for low-hanging fruit to leverage for game-changing innovative solutions, sourcing themselves to meet a hard stop as soon as possible after onboarding, all to create the headfake of pretending they can think outside the box.

Bottom line, buzz-speak is a buzzkill.

• Outside the box – This phrase has been slaughtered by overuse. It’s probably more creative to stay inside the box now.

The Date Escape How to keep the romance alive this month …

>> Jake and Alessa sat hand-in-hand as the sun set behind

them. He said he’d chosen these particular seats for that very reason. It was a hot August evening, with the temperatures lingering in the 80’s, as they tend to do on those long Akron nights. He told her that in the final minutes of its golden glow, the sun could cast incredible light on the building that stood just a bit off to the east. She glanced at the building now and saw the honey-dripped light of sunset, creating remarkable shadows upon the surface of the concrete-curtain façade. She The Price of Love had never associated the word “beautiful” with the Polsky building.

Until now.

At that moment, the crack of the bat snapped her attention back to the infield.

She began the instinctive scanning of the sky to locate the baseball that she was sure was hurtling toward her. “There it goes,” he pointed, as the crowd rose to its feet in anticipation of an Aeros home run.

The sun continued its graceful descent behind the western edge of Canal Park Stadium, the stars came out and the Aeros went on to win 4-2.

“You feel like getting a drink?” he asked.

“Sure,” she replied with a crooked smile.

Jake put his arm around her and walked down the street to Jimmy’s martini bar. “I love these paintings,” she remarked as they entered and found a seat at a table near the middle of the bar.

“Me too,” he said. “This one, in particular.

It looks like something out of a dream.”

“Exactly,” Alessa replied, as she slipped her hand back into his.

The waitress took their order and before they could finish their conversation about the art hanging on the walls, her chocolate martini and his three-olive martini arrived.

“I can’t believe I drive by these places every day after work and have no idea that they’re like this,” she said as she squeezed his hand.

He smiled and looked into her eyes as he replied, “Well, it probably depends on the company.”

She laughed and looked down at her drink.

It was only their second date, but she already knew there was something rare happening.

“Yes, I suppose it does,” she replied, as she lifted her drink. “To amazing second dates.”

“To amazing second dates,” he replied, before clinking her glass.

Quaker Station was a sea of red May 12 as 515 women (and a few good men) gathered for the American Heart Association’s 2011 Go Red For Women luncheon.

This year’s Go Red Chair Diane Johnson welcomed guests to the event, where they were treated to steel drum music and crimson cocktails, had their photographs taken while wearing red boas and perused the silent auction items, a fundraiser for the organization.

Keynote speaker, actress and wellness author Mariel Hemingway shared healthy tips during the luncheon, and Dr. Renée Markovich, from Akron General’s Center for Family Medicine, provided a medical message about heart health.

The organization also honored local women who have experienced heart disease and stroke, either themselves or through a relative’s struggle.

Their stories of survival were powerful reminders to guests to make their health a priority.

Fashionably rated 3rd in the nation (and 13th in the world!), KSU’s School of Fashion is gaining an elite reputation on par with fashion-design powerhouses like Parsons.

D

ressed in red jeans, a gray sport coat paired with a lightblue shirt and a silver iridescent tie, J.R. Campbell muses over a career in fashion that has taken him around the globe.

In 2005, the California native left a tenured post at Iowa State University, packed up his family and became the director of research at Scotland’s highly regarded Centre for Advanced Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. He also served as a visiting scholar at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and New Zealand’s Auckland University of Technology’s Textile Design Laboratory.

While the kudos and awards continued to build, Campbell admits he never imagined the next step forward in his career would bring him to Kent, Ohio. In fact, when he received the call in 2008 from Kent State University’s former fashion school director Elizabeth Rhodes about replacing her at the top post, he was … well … skeptical.

“Even in talking to some of my colleagues and friends at London College of Fashion or folks at top fashion schools, the first thing they said is, ‘Kent?’ ‘Kent State?’

‘Where’s that?’ ” laughs Campbell.

But after careful research on the school and its impact on the industry and a visit

to the campus for an interview — the first time he’d ever stepped foot in Ohio — it was clear this position was a great career move. So Campbell packed his bags (again) and in July 2009, started as director and professor at The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at KSU. “As a research fellow, I got to visit easily 25 different fashion schools around the world, and this one really stands out for the facilities we have, the space we have and the potential to grow, so that was exciting to me,” says Campbell, pointing out the school’s membership among 13 in the country with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “If we were to look at fashion programs in the U.S. in fouryear liberal arts and sciences institutions, we’d probably come out as one of the largest fashion schools in the nation.”

And one of the best. KSU’s fashion school was recently ranked No. 3 in the country — and 13th in the world — by Fashionista.com, pitted against top schools in New York, Paris, London and Milan.

To compile the list, Fashionista.com staff spoke to students, school employees, companies who hire graduates and industry professionals — while taking into account tuition costs, demographics, famous alumni and variety in programming. undergraduate and MBA in fashion-focused business in just five years, KSU’s School of Fashion is one of the top American fashion schools and keeps getting better.”

Says Campbell: “The goal really is to transition from being a school that was responding to industry needs to becoming one that’s inspiring industry practice. I’m not so worried about whether we knock Parsons out [of the top spot]. … What I’m really excited about is that we’re being recognized for what we’re doing.”

he fashion school was founded in 1983 through a donation from Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman, a wellknown duo who owned a successful readyto-wear business in New York. When they retired, they donated their entire valuable collection to KSU, inspiring the school to transform the former university library into a fashion museum and to refurbish the library atrium to launch the fashion school.

All housed under one roof, Rockwell Hall boasts large studio and classroom space, the June F. Mohler Fashion Library (with some 3,500 books, periodicals, original designer sketchbooks and more) and the KSU Museum, which has a costume collection of more than 40,000 pieces encompassing American and European high fashion from top designers such as Chanel, Bob Mackie, Bill Blass and Ralph Rucci.

Graduating about 200 students a year, the fashion school incorporates industry-focused curriculum and programs, along with an internship requirement. Campbell also recently launched the TechStyleLab, which houses the necessary technologies for students to design, produce and print their own fabrics.

But perhaps most importantly, the curriculum incorporates projects that expose students to fashion industry movers and shakers. One such project resembles Lifetime’s reality series, Project Runway.

Throughout the year, seniors are required to design a collection of four to six garments, which are critiqued from initial-design drawings to pattern creations to the final constructed garment by some big names in the industry; past judges have included Lord & Taylor designer Jeff Mahshie, Project Runway Season 5 winner Leanne Marshall, women’s fashion designer Dana Buchman and KSU fashion alumni, including Project Runway contestant Stephen Whitney Baum — better august 2011

known as “Suede.” Students then redesign or adjust their collections based on the feedback, and the lines are then showcased at the school’s annual fashion show held each April.

KSU fashion students can do just that.

Designed to engage students in different cultures, perspectives and industry standards, Kent’s study-away programs rival those offered by other top schools in the country.

In addition to its campuses in New York and Florence, the school has partnered with Hong Kong Polytechnic University to exchange as many as four students between campuses each year and with the Paris American Academy, enabling students to take KSU courses on the PAA campus near Luxembourg Gardens and to study with masters of couture fashion techniques and business. expand the program to the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.) Students also regularly study in London, Milan and other European cities.

“Students get to do multiple experiences and to compare and contrast them — some people in the industry never get to do that,” says Emily Aldredge, the school’s NYC Studio director and study-away program coordinator.

“It makes for a richer academic experience overall, and now they’re that much more prepared to work in the industry.”

Founded in 2006, the NYC Studio is KSU’s largest study-away program, offering its 40plus students per semester the chance to interact with industry leaders through guest speakers and visits to fashion companies, showrooms and museum fashion exhibits.

“If I had to think of one word that describes the New York City experience, it would be ‘accessibility’ — for networking, internships and industry professionals,” says Aldredge, adding that the school is essentially using “New York as our textbook.”

Most students also intern while studying in the Big Apple, learning first-hand what it’s like to work in the industry and for a fashion company — be it a small studio or large corporation.

Her boss loved the design, but Geroski never imagined what would happen next: It ended up in production — selling online and in the Victoria’s Secret catalog.

“It was an amazing feeling to know that a style I created would be available to the entire country,” says Geroski, who’s now working full-time as assistant designer for the Elle brand at Kohl’s and getting paid for something she loves to do. “After four unpaid internships, you can imagine what an added bonus it is to actually get paid for working!”

eroski is just one of the school’s many success stories — recruited to retailer giants like Kohl’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Limited Co. and Macy’s, and top designer labels like BCBG Max Azria, Elie Tahari and Nanette Lepore.

By comparison, however, Kent has yet to produce any names on par with Parson’s alumni list, which reads like a Fashion Week calendar: Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Isaac Mizrahi, Narciso Rodriguez, Anna Sui, Tracy Reese and Jason Wu, just to name a few.

But many agree, it’s only a matter of time.

“Kent’s deserving of a reputation, but they just don’t have it yet,” says R. Scott French, a New York-based designer who also teaches at Kent’s outpost there. “Your best asset coming from KSU is an amazing program — Parsons would be chasing behind if KSU were in New York.”

Geroski agrees. “I’ve been told more than once that what a lot of people in the industry appreciate about Kent students is our willingness to do any sort of task well, and with a positive attitude. Our work ethic really shows, and because we went to a state school, we’re well-rounded. Also, I’m not sure how many fashion school grads can say they studied abroad in Florence, Italy, completed study tours in France and England, spent a semester in the heart of the Garment District in NYC, and had designers such as Dana Buchman, Costello Tagliapietra and Charles Nolan critique their senior collection.” / Lyndsey Frey is a freelance writer based in Cleveland. Q

uiet voices and campfire pops gently pierce the morning silence. Acres of white tents blanket the hillsides as men and women recall a time when life and war were a more personal experience.

There was no texting or twittering back then. People spoke face to face, or at least communicated through hand-written letters with exquisite penmanship and eloquence born of hard scholastic discipline. The accepted day-to-day manners had a formality and grace one would find odd and cumbersome today. It was life, face to face, hand to hand.

Likewise, The Civil War battlefield was not the utilitarian scene of camouflage, mechanization and technology we see from afar on our plasma screens today. The struggle to eat,

to stay warm and dry, and to stay alive, meant clothing and weapons made of wood, wool and iron that had a humanity and aesthetic appeal despite the hardships and horrors of the time. There were no bombers at 50,000 feet and no satellite imaging. You saw your enemy, and you tried to shoot him before he shot you. It, too, was personal.

These Civil War re-enactors, gathering this year on Sept.

17 and 18 in Zoar for the largest Civil War re-enactment in Ohio, will bring back some of the sights, smells and sounds of one of the greatest disasters this nation has ever endured. Yet now, despite the towering difficulties and brutality that were part of that conflict, there’s a bittersweet beauty in it all that captivates both participant and spectator.

For parents of schoolaged children, you’re likely thinking about back-to-school clothes, shoes and supplies — all the items necessary to make a fresh transition back to the classroom. You might also be thinking (especially if you’re part of a dual-income household where both you and your significant other work full-time) how you’re going to find after-school activities for your kids during the critical hours of 3 p.m.-6 p.m., or later.

>> Not only are parents needing to keep their children occupied until they can pick them up after a long workday, but many wonder how useful out-of-school-time (known among educators as OST) can be in helping our kids improve critical skills like math or reading; learn a new skill — from archery to chess to music; or try a new sport.

If you’re one of those parents (and even if you’re not), it’s worth noting how OST can make an impact on the ever-increasing educational needs of our next generation. Society is now recognizing that students lose academic ground during the summer months, while they’re away from a consistent learning environment. Numerous studies have pointed to the increased need for an extended or longer school day to support all the 21st century skills often cited as minimum requirements to grow our economy and compete globally — skills such as critical analysis, creativity, innovation and the ability to apply learning into project-task-completion.

Given both public and private schools’ challenged budgets at every level and grade, it’s not surprising that extended school days can’t be supported by traditional classroom learning. But extended learning opportunities abound outside our classrooms — in Akron and throughout Summit County. Our region offers a variety of ways to reinforce and extend classroom learning, as well as some new and interesting options to provide physical activity, music and theater arts, and science/technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM) learning activities.

Here’s a sampling of some of the more popular programs in Greater Akron:

Arts & Culture Arts and cultural opportunities provide an outlet for students to develop their creative spirits at a time when great focus is placed on academic testing. Shown to bolster student performance in language arts as well as math, theater arts remain an important component for youth learning and creativity. One of the august 2011

best and largest providers of OST theater arts is Weathervane Playhouse’s educational programming — jam-packed with great offerings for would-be actors or kids who just want to learn about dance, story-telling or singing.

This summer, they even offered a “combat club” to help teens learn how to create a fight onstage using staged techniques to build and sell an audience that the fight is real (and without anyone getting hurt). In-school and after-school activities range from offerings in several Akron Public Schools to parochial schools, with programs on Saturdays throughout the school year at the theater located in the Valley.

The Illusion Factory is also extending school learning in the arts arena by offering interactive performances in schools during daytime classes and workshops throughout the school year, with weekend theater classes available at Northwest Family Recreation Center.

Reach Out and Dance (ROAD) — offered by the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet (CVYB) — provides two teachers and a musician during

the school day who teach movement, choreography, performance and music. After school, promising students are encouraged to extend their learning with other dance programs at CVYB or other area arts organizations like Weathervane. According to Kara Stewart, ROAD’s Artistic Director, “Everything we do [in ROAD classes] reinforces curriculum concepts and behavior models used by classroom teachers. … Children learn quickly because they’re constantly engaged in fun, uplifting activities.”

STEM Learning Opportunities What does it really mean to be a “STEM learner”? Well, it doesn’t mean you have to become a scientist just because you decide on a STEM-focused education. To be a STEM learner really means that the student becomes a problem solver, innovator, inventor and logical thinker — and is also able to enter a college-level course of study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Akron has gained a reputation for its focus on STEM and is a critical “hub” in Ohio’s STEM Learning Network. In fact, Akron is a central player throughout the region — and nation.

Examples include the public-private collaborations between local hospital systems and institutions of higher education to promote STEM learning; the deliberate infusion of projectbased learning throughout schools in the region through a collaboration between the University of Akron, Kent State University, Hiram College and Akron Public Schools; and the top-performing National Inventors Hall of Fame School/Center for STEM Learning, an innovative middle school serving grades 5-8, with consistent and robust after-school and weekend activities to support extended learning through fun, project-based activities.

Ten local Girl Scout teams competed in the For Inspiration & Recognition in Science & Technology (FIRST) LEGO League competitions throughout the region last year, and more teams will compete this year — once the Girl Scouts launch their motorized robotics lab to spread the programming to more than 600 girls throughout the area.

Because the community’s recreation department is run through the school district, rather than the city, it’s an automatic collaboration — and smart for extended learning opportunities.

There’s also Invent Now’s Club Invention, which serves thousands of area kids through after-school programming at public, private and parochial schools throughout Summit County. Programs are all intended to further school academics in a fun, informal afterschool environment using hands-on creative challenges.

Bath Elementary School and Revere Middle School offer STEM programs and Lego Builder’s Club. Hudson City Schools has a STEM Alliance to promote STEM learning with dozens of OST offerings including FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech League and many others.

For high school students, opportunities continue to abound for those seeking to explore

Many high school students in our area also have the opportunity to intern or shadow professionals throughout the school year, either through unique offerings or service learning programs. For example, local hospitals and universities partnered with Hudson high school students to engage in research at their facilities, so students were part of realworld research at these institutions.

Consider Your Options Even during the recession, with parents struggling to maintain financial equilibrium, after-school options remain a high priority. Many public school districts, including Akron, receive federal support to provide after-school programs to families who need financial help. In fact, research shows that students who participate in after-school programs, including those funded by the federal government’s 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) program, show improved school attendance, engagement in learning, and improved grades and test scores.

In 1977, attorney Barbara Mushkat read an article about an organization established specifically for New York businesswomen.

Recognizing the dearth of organized support for Akron-area women, she told her then-law clerk Judy Nicely, “We need something like that here.”

Barbara and Judy decided to host a lunch.

In an interview for StoryCorps, America’s oral history project (www.storycorps.org), Barbara and Judy recalled the climate for Akron businesswomen in 1977: Few social networking opportunities existed, and the ones that did exist catered to men.

Women’s Network was needed all the more because associations like the Akron City Club and the Hill-Toppers Club at the University of Akron didn’t admit women as members. In those days, if a man invited a woman to lunch at the City Club, they both had to sit in the women’s dining room! It’s hard for us to imagine, but that was the reality for businesswomen as recently as the 1970s.

Women’s Network members helped change all that.

By 1985, Women’s Network had grown to 435 members, and by 1997, the organization was 1,100 strong. Today, Women’s Network, Inc. of Northeast Ohio remains a valuable resource to area women. Its dedicated members continue to work to

Women of Achievement The Women of Achievement Awards were established in 1999 by the YWCA of Summit County to increase community awareness, understanding and appreciation of women and the doors they open for future generations. In 2005, Women’s Network, Inc. became the host for these prestigious community awards. Individuals, businesses and organizations can nominate women from the community within the public or private sector. Women’s Network selects recipients based on their history of encouraging success among women, breaking down barriers, mentoring, taking risks to overcome obstacles and supporting the progress of women toward full participation in economic, community and family life.

Additionally, these award winners have gone beyond their own personal or career accomplishments to give back to the community.

Wendy Bolas

Sylvia D. Trundle

Wendy Bolas is Senior Vice President of Business Banking Manager at FirstMerit Bank N.A., Akron Region. Bolas is responsible for the overall operations in the Business Banking Segment of FirstMerit’s Akron Region, which includes 35 branches in Summit and Portage counties.

Sylvia Trundle began her law enforcement career at Copley and Fairlawn Police and Fire departments in 1979, and joined the Akron Police Department in 1989. She currently serves as a Captain in the Uniform Sub-Division, but prior assignments include Community Policing, SWAT, Juvenile Bureau, Planning & Research, and Police Information Officer.

Bolas has been employed

by FirstMerit (formerly First National Bank of Ohio) since 1985, beginning as a teller and working through various positions of increasing responsibility. She was named Business Banking Manager in June 2006.

Bolas graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School and received an associate degree in business from The University of Akron. She graduated with an Executive MBA from Baldwin Wallace College in 2006 and from the Ohio School of Banking. In 2010, Bolas received a Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award from Sales & Marketing Executives International.

Bolas is Vice President of Support Services for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve Board of Trustees and serves on the Executive Board for the Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America. She helped form the Finance Academy with Cuyahoga Falls High School and is a member of the Akron Urban League Minority Business Development Center Advisory Board; the Executive Committee for Cascade Capital Corporation; and Pastoral Counseling Services Board of Trustees. A graduate of Leadership Akron in 2004, Bolas currently serves as Chair for Leadership Giving for the United Way campaign.

After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Bolas became involved with the Greater Akron Fire Truck Fund, which helped purchase several emergency vehicles for the City of New York. She took on similar roles in the fundraising efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian Tsunami.

Trundle believes in serving and demonstrating her commitment to our community in capacities other than just law enforcement and currently serves as the Vice President of the Victim Assistance Program Board. She also serves on the boards of Greenleaf Family Center, AAA Akron Auto Club and the Women’s Endowment Fund.

In addition, Trundle chairs the Summit County Domestic Violence Coalition and serves on advisory committees for Guardians Against Sexual Predators, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, Oriana House, Community Health-AGMC and the development committee of Habitat for Humanity. Trundle’s warm, sincere personality and dedication to the community are evident in her professional as well as her volunteer work.

Having graduated from The University of Akron with a B.A. in sociology, Trundle also completed the Police Executive Leadership College, Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program and FBI National Academy. Trundle is a proud (and active!) graduate of Leadership Akron.

Married to Marc Trundle, a retired sergeant with the Tallmadge Police Department, she is a member of Peninsula United Methodist Church and has three furry “kids”: Cruiser, Mariah and Smokey.

Judit E. Puskas, Ph.D., P. Eng

Carolyn B. Hofmann

Dr. Puskas received an M. E. Sc in organic and biochemical engineering in 1977 and a Ph.D. in plastics and rubber technology in 1985 from the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary, and was involved in polymer research and development in the microelectronic, paint and rubber industries. She started her academic career in 1996. Her present interests include green polymer chemistry, biomimetic processes and biomaterials, living/controlled polymerizations, polymerization mechanisms and kinetics, thermoplastic elastomers and polymer structure/property relationships and probing the polymer-bio interface. As a coinventor of the polymer used on the Taxus coronary stent, Dr. Puskas helped the University of Akron generate more than $5 million in license fees.

Carolyn B. Hofmann grew up in Cuyahoga Falls and learned from her family that helping others is both a responsibility and a joy. For the past 38 years, she has been a part of the mission of Akron Children’s Hospital, serving as the Assistant Director of Food Services for 20 years and for the past 14 years, as Employee Involvement Coordinator in Human Resources. Her passion for being involved with and giving back to the community has followed her through her professional career and personal life.

Dr. Puskas is one of the editors of the new Interdisciplinary Reviews in Nanomedicine and NanoBiotechnology WIRE, published by WileyBlackwell, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Polymer Journal. She was also member of the IUPAC Working Party IV.2.1, “Structure-property relationships of commercial polymers.” Dr. Puskas has been published in more than 350 publications, including technical reports; is an inventor or co-inventor of 26 U.S. patents and applications; and has been chair or organizer of a number of international conferences. She was awarded her fourth NSF and first NIH grant (the first ever in the Department of Polymer Science) in 2010, and is the recipient of several awards, including the 1999 PEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario, Canada) Medal in Research & Development, a 2000 Premier’s Research Excellence Award, the 2004 Mercator Professorship Award from the DFG (Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, German Research Foundation), the LANXESS (previously Bayer) Industrial Chair 1998-2008, and the 2009 “Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers” Award of the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society. She was elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering AIMBE in 2011.

Hofmann was a Girl Scout leader for 18 years and has been an active member of her church, chairing several committees, including missions. In 2002, she helped to bring a new social service agency, Family Promise (previously known as Interfaith Hospitality Network), to the community. The agency works with faith congregations throughout Summit County to assist homeless families by providing overnight shelter, meals, transportation, compassion, and job search and housing support.

Hofmann chaired the board during 2004 as the agency began to provide services, and she continues to be active with the program today.

Most important in her life is her service to Children’s Hospital, its employees and its community. One of her responsibilities is to help employees understand the importance of giving back to the community that supports Children’s so generously. She also advises the Employee Foundation Council, comprised of representatives from all hospital departments, whose purpose is to raise and distribute funds to charitable organizations. She plans activities that allow and encourage employees to be generous donors of their time and resources. Hofmann also educates employees on social service agencies in our community and encourages them to become involved on a personal level.

One of Hofmann’s favorite quotes is, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” (Winston Churchill) She is truly honored to be awarded this recognition.

Dorothy O. Jackson Award The Dorothy O. Jackson Award recognizes and honors area businesses or organizations that have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their commitment to the empowerment of women and promotion of diversity in the workplace. Candidates must be local businesses or organizations and able to accept the award in person at the Women of Achievement Awards luncheon. The award recipient may be from the for-profit or nonprofit sector, and may be a sole-proprietor, partnership or corporation. Businesses or organizations that have received this award in the past are not eligible.

ACCESS Would any mother choose to sleep with her children in a parked car on a hot, humid summer night with the windows rolled up for safety? Unfortunately, many women in Northeast Ohio face this terrible decision

every day. ACCESS offers a safe alternative for these families in crisis.

ACCESS operates a 30-day emergency homeless shelter for single adult women and mothers with their children. We strive to offer our clients a safe place where the threats of life on the streets or in their cars are replaced by food, shelter, warmth and support. We help women face or remove the barriers that are in their way to self-fulfillment, gainful employment and safe, affordable housing. In 2010, we served 472 residents — 255 adults and 217 children.

Since opening in 1984, ACCESS has sheltered over 16,500 women and children.

Statistics reveal that, on any given night in the state of Ohio, 12,000 people are homeless. In Summit County on Jan. 25, 2010, the “Point in Time Count” identified 839 people living in homeless shelters or on the streets.

The majority of homeless families are headed by a single parent, and 95 percent of those parents are female. Less than 25 percent of homeless children graduate from high school.

These numbers reflect an unsettling reality in our community. At ACCESS, we’re fighting to change that reality.

ACCESS is often the first step on the road to stability for many of our clients. We provide the basic needs for all women and children who pass through our doors. But we go beyond those basic necessities by providing intense programs to identify and overcome the obstacles each woman is facing that caused her crisis. We utilize a holistic approach to break the cycle of homelessness. The issues addressed in our programs include mental and physical health, employment, basic life skills, financial literacy, interpersonal habits, time management skills, addiction behaviors, education, parenting skills and housing options. The staff strongly advocates for every client and connects them with other social service agencies throughout Summit County. Our “AfterCare” program offers continued support and programming for up to six months following the client’s exit from ACCESS. We can affect a change through the empowerment of women and children. The ultimate objective at ACCESS is to break the destructive cycle of homelessness by providing the tools and the support that lead to gainful employment and independent housing.

Suzanne K. Hobson Suzanne Hobson is Director of Community Health for Akron General Medical Center.

She began her career at Akron General as a public relations assistant in 1983, was promoted to PR manager, and then served as Assistant Director for the Akron General Development Foundation before assuming her current position. In this position, Hobson represents Akron General in the community, where she’s responsible for developing programs that meet the health needs of individuals. She also manages community relations and corporate contributions.

Hobson is a strong advocate of community involvement and coordinates employee participation in health fairs and screenings in the community, as well as volunteer activities such as the recent Downtown Akron Partnership’s Green and Clean Day, the Foodbank’s volunteer day and various health-related walks. She currently serves on the hospital’s heart walk planning committee and recently chaired another successful Harvest for Hunger campaign to benefit the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank.

A 2004 Leadership Akron graduate, Hobson is a member of the boards of directors of the Foodbank and Project Learn of Summit County. She’s also a member of the Austen BioInnovation Institute’s Center for Clinical and Community Health Improvement advisory committee, Healthy Connections Network (HCN) executive committee, chairs HCN’s Communications Team and is involved in many other community collaborative groups.

A major accomplishment of which she’s especially proud was the completion of the Ohio School AED program. Akron General was the administrator, and Hobson served as project manager of a $5 million grant to coordinate training and placement of defibrillators in schools across the state. She oversaw all aspects of the project, which included training five people at each school. Because of this effort, Ohio leads the nation with more 4,700 AEDs placed in schools at no charge — and 13 lives have been saved.

Hobson holds a bachelor’s degree in media management from The University of Akron and a master’s degree in journalism from Kent State University. She lives in Tallmadge with her husband and 56

four children, along with Roxie and Maggie, the family’s Labrador Retrievers. She enjoys watching her kids sports activities, flower gardening and reading.

Stacey Zahoranski Being involved and active in her community is extremely important to Stacey Zahoranski. She currently serves as a member of the van Bakeren Foundation Finance Committee, the Akron Tax and Estate Planning Council and the Estate Planning Advisory Council for Case Western Reserve University. She also volunteers for the State Treasurer’s Smart Money Choices Conference. Zahoranski dedicates much of her volunteer efforts to St. Thomas Eastern Orthodox Christian Church and serves as Vice President of its board. In addition, she serves on the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign committee, is an active member of the Greater Akron Chamber’s Women in the KNOW program and is Secretary of the board for Women’s Network.

Professionally, Zahoranski is a Financial Advisor for Wells Fargo. With over 14 years of experience in the financial services industry, Zahoranski places emphasis on advising those going through emotional life events and transitions those who need a trusted financial advisor to guide them through challenging financial decisions.

Something that sets Zahoranski apart from others is her authentic, kind and caring manner. She strives to share her financial knowledge with other women and to educate and empower them to take control of their investments and overall financial life.

Zahoranski is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, with both a bachelor of business administration and a speech communication degree. She also earned her MBA from Case Western Reserve’s Weatherhead School of Management.

Zahoranski finds pure joy in being mother to her son, Zach, and daughter Anna, and is happily married to her husband, Richard. West Akron is where Zahoranski and her family call home.

Judith Resnik Scholarship Fund In 1991, Women’s Network established the Judith Resnik Scholarship Fund, a fund of Akron Community Foundation, in honor of fallen astronaut Dr. Judith Arlene Resnik — who was an inspiration for all women. A 1966 graduate of Firestone High School in Akron, Resnik received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1970 and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1977. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the tragedy that took Dr. Resnik’s life. To keep her memory alive, Women’s Network, Inc. established a scholarship fund to be annually awarded to a female high school senior who has been accepted into an appropriate baccalaureate program at a four-year, accredited college and is pursuing a career in math, science or engineering.

The scholarship award is $1,000 per academic year and is renewable for a total of four years. The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher to remain eligible.

Kelly McCary Kelly McCary is very active in her high school. She ran cross country all four years and was a three-year varsity letter winner. Her passion for music is shown through her eight years of playing cello, and she served as president of Medina High School Symphonic Orchestra this year. Through her school’s Girls Leadership Club, McCary participated in many service activities including Adopt-A-Family for Christmas. Academically, McCary is 11th in her class of 540 students and is graduating with the Ohio Honors Diploma. Outside of school, one of Kelly’s greatest passions is snowboarding. A life-long snowboarder, she qualified for the United States Snowboard Association National competition for the past six years. She shares her passion as an instructor at Boston Mills Brandywine Ski Resorts. Starting in the seventh grade, she participated in summer mission trips with her church youth group, going to West Virginia and Cleveland. McCary plans to attend Ohio State University in the fall and major in engineering physics with a minor in nuclear engineering. Her goal is to be selected for the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program her sophomore year and enter the Navy as a Nuclear Engineer.

younger sibling of Brunello. This wine is aged for 18 months — six months in French oak barrels, six months in Slavonian oak barrels and six months in the bottle. Deep ruby in color with a dry, round, velvety taste, it has similar characteristics to the Brunello and is an excellent companion to red meat dishes, veal, spaghetti and lasagna. It retails for $24.99.

Pinot Grigio has long been a varietal produced in Northern Italy in the Colli region just north of Venice, but the gentle climate of Tuscany is more than ideal for Banfi’s San Angelo’s Pinot Grigio. This Toscana Pinot Grigio is an elegant wine with an intense, fruity aroma, followed by a clean, rich, refreshing taste. It’s a delightful complement to seafood, veal and poultry dishes, or as a superb summer aperitif. It retails for $18.99.

In addition to pain that’s often described as flu-like muscle aches and/or a throbbing/stabbing sensation throughout their system, those who suffer from fibromyalgia also have increased central nerve sensitivity to pain.

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include: According to the American College of Rheumatology (www. rheumatology.org), the following are some ways to better manage this condition:

• Depression • Problems sleeping • Fatigue • Fibrofog (a sensation of “mental haziness” in which an individual is unable to concentrate and suffers from memory loss and depression) • Headaches

• Establish a regular pattern for going to bed and waking up. Getting enough sleep allows the body to repair itself physically and psychologically.

• Avoid daytime napping, and limit caffeine intake that can disrupt sleep.

• Nervousness • Dizziness

• Exercise regularly.

• Intestinal discomfort

At this time, no specific test or X-ray can determine if you have fibromyalgia. Instead, your doctor will take your complete medical history and conduct a physical exam. He or she also may ask you to have some blood work done to rule out other illnesses that mimic some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

• Schedule time to relax each day. Deep-breathing exercises and meditation will help reduce the stress that can bring on symptoms.

One thing in our lives that is constant is change.

Over the past 200 years since our City was first founded, Cuyahoga Falls has witnessed monumental growth, from 1,800 residents to more than 50,000 today. From the High Bridge Glens Park of the 1800s to an era of heavy industrial uses, and now a beautiful urban park, our City continues to advance. That is why, for the past 25 years, our progressive Administration and City Council have been at the forefront of ideas and opportunities for development.

From the State’s first successful merger in 1986 between Cuyahoga Falls and Northampton Township, to the construction of the Natatorium & Wellness Center and Falls River Square, I am immensely proud of where we’ve come and more excited about where we are going.

In 2012, our City will celebrate a momentous occasion. Already, our community is gearing up to celebrate an epic event: Cuyahoga Falls’ Bicentennial. 2012 will be filled with monthly events throughout the City culminating in August 2012 in a massive birthday celebration from Aug. 3-12. The City will transform into a colossal festival commemorating our 200 years – remembering our past and celebrating our future. We hope you’ll join us in our celebration!

Literally. For the past eight years, the south Front Street corridor has become a major focus for the City’s redevelopment efforts. This important area of town boasts the most awesome views of the Cuyahoga River, and the City recognizes the opportunity that it presents.

Through acquisitions, demolitions and redevelopment efforts, these 18 city blocks are being transformed from industrial-era uses to an upscale residential, retail and pedestrian-friendly environment. The High Bridge Glens Park was re-opened to the public in 2009, providing residents with direct access to the Cuyahoga River — only one of 14 national heritage rivers. Additionally, inspired by the park and other economic redevelopment efforts, the Watermark broke ground last year. Decades ago, the Cuyahoga River was artificially widened by the creation of the two dams. In recent years, dams have been removed in Kent and Munroe Falls.

The next logical steps for improved water quality will be the removal of the two dams located in Cuyahoga Falls near the Sheraton Suites Hotel (south of Broad Boulevard) and Samira’s Restaurant (north of Broad Boulevard).

The removal of these two dams will allow the river to begin its “healing” process, while also creating exciting opportunities for canoe and kayak access to the river.

One may suspect that the City’s namesake was created from these two manmade dam pools, which created two sets of falls. However, the “original” falls is still located beneath the river, south of the Sheraton. The City’s goal, together with the Ohio EPA and Friends of the Crooked River, is to eliminate both dams, creating a cleaner water source for improved fishing and swimming opportunities, the realization of rapids that will be enjoyed by canoe, kayak and other water enthusiasts, and the eventual exposure of the true “falls.” The complete unveiling or uncovering of the original falls won’t be fully exposed until the removal of the southern Gorge dam (in Akron) occurs.

However, the removal of these two dams will allow the river to begin its “healing” process, while also creating exciting opportunities for canoe and kayak access to the river. Experts have stated that this portion of the river will create rapids in the Class 4 and Class 5 categories, which will also provide other economic development spinoff for the region. City officials are hopeful that these two dam removals will occur in 2012 — another important year in the City’s history: its Bicentennial.

During this monumental occasion while celebrating 200 years as a city, the community will begin to actually see the reason for which it was named — and view the original “falls,” its namesake.
