like Akron Life & Leisure a lot.

Actually, I don’t subscribe, but almost every month I get a chance to look it over. Your publisher’s page “The Scout’s Way” (February 2010) really grabbed my attention. In fact, I copied the page and sent it to my 17-year-old grandson in Michigan who has been scouting for many years, hoping that he has unwittingly never eaten any squirrel stew!...Akron is fortunate to have this magazine. Sometimes we forget to be proud of the place that we call home, and we need to be reminded... I just wanted to let you know you have a very satisfied reader. May Akron Life & Leisure go on for many more years.

We spent three weeks last month in Asia. Russ’s son Andy and his family now live in Bangkok, Thailand, so our purpose was to visit them and also tour the area of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. When Debbie Graef heard about our planned trip, she urged me to take a copy of Akron Life & Leisure along for “photo ops.” Russ and I had a great time finding places to pose with the magazine.

he 13th Annual 1 Red & White on Thursday Night presented by Akron General Medical Center was held Thursday, Jan. 28 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron. This premier food and wine event featured samples from local restaurants, wineries and distributors as well as live and silent auctions. Proceeds benefit the Arthritis Foundation and its mission to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases.

Unveiling the New akronlife.com

O

ne of the first Web sites I ever saw back in the mid-1990s was from Beijing University. I don’t know why that page came up, but I realized that I had just gone behind the Bamboo Curtain. I remember the site and the sudden realization that soon everyone would be connected with almost everyone else in the world, because if I could access Beijing U from Akron, Ohio, someone from China could access The University of Akron.

Today, of course, the Internet is everywhere and goes everywhere. I could (and have) spent hours randomly looking at Web sites from all over the world. I’m still amazed at where this Internet-thing has taken us. I am on Facebook, but I don’t Tweet; I watch YouTube, but don’t think I have ever been to MySpace; I receive texts but seldom send them. I find it much easier to call the person with whom I want to speak and leave a voicemail if they don’t answer. As a writer, I value the richness of our language and find it difficult to send e-mails or texts in the cryptic language that has developed around these communiqués. I spell out all the words and add punctuation where needed. I love the new technology and use it daily, but I don’t play video games, don’t take up the challenges of Mafia Wars or give a hoot what Shaquille O’Neal has to say in 140 characters or less. In short, I am a typical computer and Internet user who remembers black and white TV. So when I introduce you to our new Web site, akronlife.com, I do so with as much awe as pride.

Akronlife.com shouldn’t be confused with akronlifeandleisure.com. That is our old Web site that we so proudly hoisted in 2003 shortly after the first issue was launched.

Things move so quickly in the digital world that our old site was out of date within a couple of years. We have been working on akronlife.com for some time now in order to launch it with all the bells and whistles that the akronlifeandleisure.com did not have. Unlike the old site, which was elegant but static, akronlife.com is filled with interesting stories about the Akron area as well as the location of many Greater Akron restaurants, either by name or by type of cuisine. There is also a calendar of events, searchable by day of the week. The site’s contents are broken down into four sections: Food & Dining, Arts & Entertainment, Home & Garden and Beauty & Wellness. And in each section there is a plethora (I don’t get to use that word very often) of stories, information and tips about everything from tax tips to gardening ideas. In other words, akronlife.com is the place to go to see what is happening in your community—one stop for all that is Akron. I hope you enjoy akronlife.com, and I would like for you to give us your feedback about what else we can provide on the new Web site for your enjoyment, edification and entertainment.

Now that someone from Beijing can reach beyond the Bamboo Curtain to read all about what’s happening here in Akron, it’ll make them really jealous.

A

fter growing up in Bath, Ohio, Andy Bixenstine dabbled in different things. He went to college, spending a few years in engineering at the University of Dayton, then transferring into Kent State’s business management program. After graduation, he followed a couple of old ski club buddies out to Colorado where he worked at a local ski shop. For the next two summers, he came back to Akron to work at a bike shop, and experimented a couple times in owning a similar business. After finding a great location for his Blimp City Bike & Hike on the Towpath Trail, Bixenstine’s dabbling ended. Well, sort of.

Bixenstine has dreams for Akron’s Merriman Valley. He wants to create a place where young people want to be.

“We have outdoor resources and universities that we can use to draw people into Akron—make it more hip and artsy, as well as self-sustaining.” He hopes one day the valley will look and feel like the mountain town he once lived in. “I hope we can get more people to see the valley as an asset, and care about it.”

Began biking: In his neighborhood through a huge area of woods where he rode cheap department store bikes with his friends. “I’m not a competitive biker.

I still enjoy biking alone or with friends who aren’t competitive either.”

Coolest place he’s biked: In the Rockies

when he lived in Vail and in Steamboat, Colo.

Best part of owning a bike shop: “I get to

talk to people about what I’m enthusiastic about and I don’t have to sit in front of a computer all day.”

Other hobbies: Kayaking, skiing, hiking and camping. “I like outdoor adventure sports in general. I also like to tinker on bikes and old frames, ‘frankenbikes’ as I call them. I put in the parts and see what happens.”

Keeping the business green: “We recycle every bit of cardboard the bikes come in. We also installed a higher efficiency heater and we’re looking into getting a recycling bin. We’re hoping to do more with park services and environmental groups. We want to encourage people to find more ways to use less, which is why we sell recreation as well as commuter bikes.”

hen someone mentions the lily family to you, do you think potted flowers, signifying Easter has arrived? Not me. When someone mentions the lily family to me, I think asparagus and ramps. I think spring flavors on my plate.

Although asparagus is now available all year, its celebratory flavors and local seasonality peak March through June. With a sweet flavor and wonderfully creamy texture, the succulent taste of this veggie is sure to keep you coming back for more.

Tempted by white asparagus? Considered a delicacy by many, it is grown under a covering of soil to keep the sun’s rays out, thus preventing photosynthesis and the development of chlorophyll - the green color found in regular asparagus.

Ramps are a wild vegetable, similar to leeks, and have a delicious onion-garlic flavor. They have bright green scallionlike stalks with small white bulbs.

Never had a ramp before? They’re a treat with their wild, woodsy aroma and bold flavor—so don’t let their small size fool you!

And what would a celebration of spring flavors be without fresh strawberries? A member of the rose family, strawberries are unique in that they are the only fruit with seeds on the outside!

How to select, store and handle Asparagus: The fresher the better and look for a firm touch and compact tips.

Diameter of the spear doesn’t matter, but most prefer a small diameter for a more tender taste. Fresh asparagus will keep for up to seven days in the refrigerator wrapped in a wet paper towel, or refrigerate upright in a container with an inch of water in the bottom; arrange a plastic bag loosely around the tops. Snap or trim tough ends before use.

Ramps: Look for bright green tops and white bulb bottoms, free of bruising or browned leaves. Store unwashed and wrapped tightly in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. To prevent their strong odor from affecting other foods, store in multiple bags. Ramps will stay fresh for up to one week and must be washed well before using.

Strawberries: Stems and caps should be fresh and firm; the berry should be plump and firm with a nice red finish.

Look for a pick-your-own farm in your area when local strawberries are in season, as it simply doesn’t get any tastier or fresher! Store unwashed in a single layer in your refrigerator for a few days, but serve at room temperature for maximum sweetness and flavor.

Menu ideas

A SPARAGUS * Combine, steamed and chopped, with cooked couscous or quinoa, crumbled feta, black olives and sliced green onions, then drizzle with a lemon juice and olive oil dressing April 2010

* Place spears in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet, toss with olive oil and kosher salt and roast at 450˚F until tender and browned, about 8 to 10 minutes, then sprinkle with balsamic vinegar * Blanch, cool and chop, then fold into a omelet with goat cheese * Steam and cool completely, then toss with your favorite vinaigrette

R AMPS * Use as a substitute for scallions or leeks for a bolder flavor * Delicious with hearty veggies such as potatoes * Chop and mix with rice, soups and stews * Sprinkle a potato and onion “au gratin” dish with freshly chopped ramp tops

STRAWBERRIES * Chop and toss in your favorite cornbread recipe * Wash and eat out of hand with your favorite semisweet chocolate * Combine with vanilla ice cream in a blender for a fresher-than-ever strawberry milkshake * Chop and toss in your favorite blueberry muffin recipe, forgetting the blueberries * Slice and serve with spinach, candied nuts, blue cheese and your favorite vinaigrette for a salad you won’t soon forget

Strawberry Vinaigrette

Asparagus with Orange Dressing and Toasted Hazelnuts

Think outside the salad bowl: this vinaigrette is delicious brushed atop grilled salmon!

1 pound strawberries 3 Tablespoons cider vinegar 2 1/2 Tablespoons lemon juice 1 small garlic clove, pressed or minced 1 Tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives 1 1/2 Tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil 1 Tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

1 Rinse, drain and hull strawberries. Puree in a blender or food processor.

2 Scrape strawberry puree into a bowl; stir in all remaining ingredients until well blended.

3 Serve as a salad dressing with assorted greens (note that no oil in this vinaigrette keeps the fat grams at bay!). Leftovers may be stored, covered, in the refrigerator. Makes about 2 cups.

A delightful way to serve a bright, fresh asparagus side dish.

2 Tablespoons finely chopped hazelnuts 1 1/2 pounds asparagus 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest 2 teaspoons fresh orange juice 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 4 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste

1 Toast hazelnuts in a small skillet over medium-low heat just until fragrant (being careful not to brown or hazelnuts will burn). Immediately remove from skillet to a plate to cool.

2 Trim or snap off woody ends from asparagus and, if desired, peel lower 2 inches of stems with a vegetable peeler. Cook asparagus in simmering water just until crisp tender, usually 4 to 6 minutes, and then drain well in a colander.

3 In a small bowl, whisk together the zest, juices and oil.

(If desired, add salt and pepper to taste.)

4 Transfer hot asparagus to a serving platter and spoon dressing atop. Sprinkle with toasted hazelnuts and serve immediately. Serves 4+.

pring is on the way and everywhere you look there is a sense of renewal. When you think about wines for spring, you might want to start anew as well. Search for bright and snappy wines from a younger vintage.

The good news is this is an excellent time of year to find those newly released wines.

Wineries often release their wines to the public twice a year, in spring and fall.

And don’t be put off by the 2009 vintage on some newly released Australian and New Zealand wines. Remember, the wines from Down Under are a half-year ahead of their northern cousins. Drinking lighter reds like Pinot Noir or Syrah blends in the spring are the perfect transition from the heavy, tannic Cabernet Sauvignon or Meritage that kept us warm in the winter.

Serve your reds and whites in medium to large crystal stemware. Cool temperatures (50F) for whites and a temperature that is cooler than your room for reds—lighter red wines taste much more refined at around 64F. The large glass adds to enjoyment of the wine, as it leaves plenty of room for swirling and pondering, and it allows the aromas to linger in the space above the wine.

CoolJobs From conventional to quirky, here’s a look at eight jobs we wouldn’t mind doing—at least for a day.

Standup Comic Ryan Dalton

he first time Ryan Dalton took the stage, at the urging of his buddy comedian Steve Byrne, he completely bombed in front of a room full of strangers in New York City. “Every comedian has had that same experience,” says Dalton, who likens it to getting beat up as part of a gang initiation.

In the spring of 1998, Dalton attended a workshop at the Cleveland Improv, where after three classes students get to do a show at the club. The show was a success, and from there he was hooked. “From that point, I kept getting on stage whenever people would let me,” says Dalton, a Kent State alum who started his own room performing standup at the Robin Hood in Kent. “Every week I had to come up with new material because the same people would be there week after week. Local guys or comics passing through town would stop by to try out new bits, new jokes.”

He quickly learned how to appropriately deal with hecklers.

“When you first start out, you want prepared responses, stock lines. As you get better, you kind of want to use improvisation and use your own wit against them. You kind of toy with them,” Dalton explains. “The end-all be-all goal is to get them

to shut up and get the audience to turn on them, to make the situation as uncomfortable as possible.”

Over the years, Dalton has honed his skills and earned quite a bit of recognition. In addition to performing at comedy clubs throughout the country, he has also been featured on Comedy Central’s standup showcase “Live at Gotham,” has been a guest on local and national radio shows, and last year released his first CD, “You Were Funny Too.” Although he wants to make money from his comedy career, Dalton isn’t seeking widespread fame. He believes there is a critical moment when celebrities start to believe all the hype and the compliments that they start to lose their mind. “That’s one of the reasons I still choose to live in Cleveland, to surround myself with real people,” he says.

Dalton has come a long way from his days as a used car salesman who dreamed of telling jokes professionally, and he can’t think of a better way to make a living. “Get up at noon, write a few jokes, dillydally, get on stage and spend 30 minutes telling jokes,” he says, describing a typical day’s work.

“You get to perform and entertain a bunch of people, and that’s a good time.”—KL

T

he friendly face of the Air Bear marks the city skies, but the man inside is on a mission. Akron Children’s Hospital introduced Ohio’s first pediatric helicopter in November 2008. Since then, the hospital’s ability to reach critically ill infants, children and teens has greatly increased. As one of the Air Bear pilots, Ryan Hildebrandt transports emergency cases in an average of 20 minutes. “I get them where they need to go,” he says.

Hildebrandt has been flying for the past eight years, specializing in EMS flights for five. He says he had wanted to do something with children’s hospitals and was excited when a job opened up. “It’s neat to be with the children. It’s very rewarding,” he says.

Air Bear pilots transport about 600 patients a year, which Hildebrandt says makes them want to add a second helicopter. The pilots fly all over the state, including Cincinnati,

Mansfield, Coshocton and Cleveland. The helicopter can even make it to Pittsburgh in about half an hour. As Hildebrandt puts it, “We have a big footprint.”

Although many think the trauma associated with the job would be difficult to handle, Hildebrandt says a lot of emergencies don’t take him by surprise. “It’s our job. It’s what we do,” he explains.

Air Bear Pilots work 12-14 hour shifts. They do seven days on, banking about 84 hours a week. “It sounds like a lot, but then you get a week off,” Hildebrandt says.

Hildebrandt truly enjoys flying the Air Bear, as well as interacting with the children and medical staff at Akron Children’s Hospital. “They’re the reason I’m there,” he says. “It’s amazing to work there with those people.”—KZ

Icemaker Dave Haller

I

f you’ve thrown a summer party and stopped for ice at Acme, Save-A-Lot or Circle K, chances are it came from Serv-Ice here in east Akron.

Dave Haller is vice president of Serv-Ice, or salesman or icemaker, depending on the time of year. He works with his father, continuing the company his grandparents started in 1967. Before Serv-Ice moved to their current location on East Market Street, the building was used to store block ice. “Many moons ago people used to cut ice blocks out of lakes, store it in the building and deliver it by horse and buggy,” Haller explains. But ice making has come a long way since then.

Today the company produces 80 tons of ice every 24 hours, shipping to hundreds of stores. But Haller says individuals are also welcome to stop by. “If you need dry ice to keep your

food cold on a road trip, we can help you out,” he says. The company also subs orders out to local ice artists, just incase you’re looking for a beautiful frozen centerpiece for a special occasion, What exactly does it take to be a good icemaker? “You have to know the dynamics of the market place and be prepared as far as the season,” Haller explains. He says they’re busiest around the Fourth of July and slowest the first quarter of the year.

But no matter what time if year it is, Haller is working in some icy weather. He points out the company keeps the temperature inside the building about 26 degrees to “keep it comfortable.” Warm blood must run in the family.—KZ

Pet Sitter Lesley McBurney

A

fter years working in the IT field, Lesley McBurney came to a crossroads in her career. “I decided to go ahead and turn my passion for my dogs into something fun to do that was going to help pay the bills,” explains McBurney, who opened Fairlawn Pet Resort in December 2006. At the time, she had two dogs; now she has five.

McBurney takes caring for people’s pets seriously. She even had the building equipped with separate ventilation systems and soundproof suites for dogs and cats, so neither animal can smell or hear the other.

Canine guests are taken on “potty walks” every three hours and enjoy two 30-minute play sessions a day, either alone or with other dogs of similar size and temperament. “A couple times a day, we’ll go from suite to suite and cuddle with all the dogs,” McBurney says. “If someone looks like they need some attention, I give them a tummy rub and an ear scratch.”

For McBurney, who has taken doggy first aid classes and other pet-related courses, read books and been certified as a doggy first aid technician, caring for people’s pets isn’t just a day job. “We are a 24/7 operation,” she says, explaining that dogs are taken for their last potty break around 10 or 10:30 p.m., and then she tucks everyone in and does a final check before heading to the front of the building.

While McBurney is prepared to care for more than just dogs and cats—birds, rats, gerbils, even a hedgehog have all stayed at the facility—you won’t find any reptiles or large spiders.

“That’s pretty much where I draw the line,” she says.—KL

Pawn Shop Owner Al Martin

S

addles and fur coats are just some of the odder things that Martin has seen come through his pawn shop.

For the most part, Al’s of Ohio has the general merchandise, stereo equipment and musical instruments its “very local” market is looking for.

Martin says he’s seen an increase in business because of the financial crisis. “People are much more aware of pawnbrokers. They know they can save money and still get the quality they’re looking for,” he says.

Martin has also noticed how his customer base has grown more diverse in the past several years. “The suits as well as the guys wearing coveralls are coming in,” he explains.

“They’re both interested in saving money.”

Having been in the business since 1981, Martin is a people person. “You have to enjoy people or you’re in the wrong business,” he says. But sometimes he finds dealing with customers difficult. “Most people have a problem or they’re looking for something on the sales end. You have to know when to yield and when to be tough—like a parent.”

One problem for pawnbrokers is when people try to sell stolen merchandise. “We try hard not to take anything in that’s stolen,” Martin says. “But we see a lot of sad situations, even family members stealing from other family members. Who else can you trust if you can’t trust your family?”

Although Martin has met a lot of interesting characters though his work, he’s ready to move on. “I expected to be retired now and go fishing,” he says. Hopefully after almost 30 years at the shop, he won’t have to wait much longer.—KZ

etter known around town as “Rickshaw Willie,” Tim Wilhelm is the guy you’ve probably seen toting passengers in his rickshaw, or pedicab. On a busy Saturday night, he may have about 40 or 50 passengers (though only two to three can ride at a time).

Wilhelm got the idea for his business in December 2008 when his daughter, a University of Akron student, complained about parking. His original plan was to give rides to UA students, but that didn’t pan out. Instead, he began working Saturday nights and during special events like parades and bike rodeos for kids. For obvious reasons, Wilhelm mostly works during the warmer months, but even during winter you’ll see him out occasionally.

“Right now I’m just a guy on a bicycle,” Wilhelm says, explaining that if he charged passengers a fee for riding he’d need to obtain a taxi license. However, tips are always appreciated.

“My daughter gave me a hint,” he says. “Look for the girls in the real high heels.” Maybe not at the beginning of the night, but by midnight they’ll probably appreciate the ride, he adds.

“I’ll drive anywhere between Market Street to Spaghetti Warehouse, and as far down as Thornton,” he explains. “Yell for Rickshaw Willie and I’ll pull over and pick you up.”

Toy Designer John Sinchock

A

As vice president of research and development for Step 2 in Streetsboro, John Sinchock spends his days surrounded by toys. “Not only do we have our own products, but competitors’ too,” Sinchock explains.

“Because we’re a toy company, we’re also interested in anything else that’s creative.”

When Sinchock began at the company 17 years ago, he was one of three toy designers. Now that he has worked his way through the ranks, he spends less time sketching and more time helping other designers develop their ideas. “At any one time, we have between five and 10 products under development,” he says. These projects are brought to life first as sketches, then as computer drawings, followed by 3D models, and eventually a finished product.

“Everybody thinks they’re a designer around here,” Sinchock says, explaining how everyone from sales people to vendors

such as Toys “R” Us offers their input. Still, most of Step 2’s ideas come internally, many of them from designers who have children themselves. A father of six, with children ranging in age from 9 to 25, Sinchock has plenty of experience bringing toys home for his children to test.

For Sinchock, the laid-back environment of Step 2 comes with the territory. “When you get creative people, they tend to not be so rigid as maybe in a more corporate environment,” he says, adding that employees enjoy listening to loud music, playing games and taking part in impromptu brainstorming sessions at work. “That’s all part of the creative process.”

So what’s the best part of working for a toy company? “You get to go to the store and see the stuff you worked on,” Sinchock says. “That’s the neatest part.”—KL

A

n Ohio University journalism school graduate, Lisa Abraham began her career as a political writer. It seems like an unlikely beginning for the Akron Beacon Journal food writer and columnist, but “I covered politics and crime for like 20 years,” she says. “After years of withholding my opinions, I’m now allowed to give them.”

Abraham has always been a cook at heart, and that’s why she applied for the food writer position. “My main hobby outside of work was cooking,” she says. “No matter where I worked, I was always known as the newsroom cook.”

Now she gets to write three columns and one food-related story a week, as well as additional “hard news” stories that fall under the food beat.

Perks of Abraham’s job include an endless supply of cookbooks, opportunities to meet celebrity chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Colette Peters and judging local food competitions.

While it might seem like every foodie’s dream to judge a cooking competition, it’s not all fun and games. For one, “there’s a lot of bad food out there.” Other times, it’s a case of too much of a good thing. “One day I judged a chocolate contest and a cake competition in the same day,” Abraham recalls.

“I truly thought I was in sugar shock. It sounds great on paper, but when you actually have to do it, it’s almost physically impossible to feed your body that much sugar in one day.”

One of Abraham’s favorite stories, though, was a 2008 column that brought her back into the kitchen with her father to make olives, a Lebanese tradition they often did together during her childhood. “It was a true labor of love for me,” she says. Piece of Mind Local quilters inspired by fusion of cultures, life events and hometown pride

U

nexpected journeys are woven through the colors, textures and patterns of their work: a teacher who gives her fabric narratives away, a mom in a race against the clock to get her Akron quilt to auction, an international folk art designer and a woman who fuses Amish designs with needlework from her Laotian homeland.

Like scores of other local quilt enthusiasts, each woman puts her own modern-day twist on an artform that just keeps reinventing itself.

Karen Hanna creates vivid commentaries on life.

Karen Hanna’s view of the world was tailor-made for quilts.

It’s colorful and full of life. It’s thoughtful and full of symbolism. It’s a merger of T-shirts and gold lamé, new fabrics and remnants, polka dots, taffetas and lace—lovingly pieced together for an ever-expanding community of friends.

A math and science teacher at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School, she began making traditional quilts by hand to pass the time when her daughter, Kelly, now 25, was just a baby.

These days, she continues to design and piece together her works but has them machine quilted at A Piece in Time.

Never interested in selling her quilts, she prefers to give them away. It gives her creative autonomy over her work, she jokes.

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, Hanna created a quilt to honor the 14 fallen heroes from Ladder 20 and Squad 18 in New York City. Rich in symbolism, the quilt continues to hang at the fire station today.

More than half a dozen wall hangings brighten offices and warm the lobby at the middle school. Another graces the aquarium room at Hospice on Ridgewood Road.

Her Our Lady of Guadalupe quilt, framed under glass at St. Sebastian Church, is perhaps her favorite. She made it as an intercessory quilt “to give people hope and positive direction when they need it.”

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the mid-1980s, Hanna struggled with pain and complications related to optic neuritis. By 1992, when the effects of MS were debilitating, Hanna cried out to God through Guadalupe for relief. By 1994, she received medicines that helped her regain her health. Her MS remains under control today.

Not a day goes by when she doesn’t remember “how very fortunate and very blessed” she is. “It’s all a gift,” she says, and so “I quilt my life away.”

Patches of Akron

W

hat comes to mind when you think of Akron? Judy Thompson, a quilter and local mom with children at King Elementary and Litchfield Middle schools thinks of homegrown heroes like two-time Olympic gold medalist Mark Gangloff, a Firestone High School alum.

She thinks of Strickland’s and West Point Market, of Stan Hywet, E.J. Thomas Hall and the Akron Zoo. She thinks of events like First Night and the Road Runner Marathon.

Thompson immortalized some of her favorites in a custom quilt called “All Around Town” which she created and donated to the King School auction fundraiser, March 20 at the Portage Country Club.

A king-sized keepsake, Thompson’s brainchild was a monumental effort. But once local contributors caught her vision, they made some unique and memorable additions to this one-of-a-kind piece.

Sue Spargo’s world palette has primitive African roots.

As a high school student in Africa, Sue Spargo spent a semester or two working on her first quilt. She still remembers assembling the hexagon blocks to form a traditional grandmother’s flower garden pattern.

“The fascination of cutting things up and putting them together is what we all love,” Spargo says, describing the lure of quiltmaking.

After getting married and becoming a nurse, Spargo moved to London and later to Salt Lake City, Nashville and Uniontown, Ohio—with family in tow.

Through each move, Spargo continued quilting.

Before long, she began to develop her own designs influenced by the energy and colors of Africa, lush greens from the rolling hills of Southern England, and many new influences from the U.S. In 2002, Spargo found herself in another unexpected place. Her husband left her and she needed a way to support herself and their four children. “I either had to go back to nursing or pursue my dream,” Spargo says.

Her dream won. She started a business around quilting. “I just had the feeling there was a niche there for me because my designs were different,” she explains.

Each of Spargo’s quilts have hundreds of hours of hand work in them. She does all of the appliqué herself and does not send out anything to be stitched.

Spargo teaches at retreats and seminars. She writes books, creates patterns and kits for other quilters. She sells high-quality fabrics online, including lush velvets and wools hand-dyed by her sister.

Even through the recession, Spargo says her clients “seem to continue to make money available to do this.” Her five-year-old company has grown by 30 percent every year since she started it.

This month, Spargo’s quilting expertise will take her to Barcelona, then Nantes and Paris, to teach. “It has been an amazing journey!” she says.

“In a whole day, I almost finish one block,” Vue says in describing the process she uses to create her work.

Mai Lo Vue blends Hmong techniques with Amish tradition.

Mai Lo Vue was born in Laos in 1965. As a young teenager, she fled the country with her family after the Vietnam War. She came to Akron by way of Lancaster, Pa., where the family moved in 1979 through a Mennonite-sponsored program.

Transplanted into the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, Vue learned to make Amish quilts from her new friends there. She and her family have been hand-stitching quilts ever since.

Elephant footprints, a symbol of protection between two lovers, and snail footprints, a mark of good land, are recurring motifs in her quilts.

Her designs are an interesting fusion of Amish inspired floral prints and distinctive reverse appliqué designs. In reverse appliqué, shapes are cut from the interior of a piece of fabric and the raw edges are turned to expose a second layer of fabric beneath. The Hmong people are known for their colorful reverse appliqué clothing, Vue explains.

For Vue, this time-consuming process is as therapeutic as it is demanding.

Stitching offers her “a time of solitude,” she says. She looks forward to putting on her favorite music (WCRFFM Christian radio) and sitting down to do her appliqué.

The only thing more fun is shopping for fabrics in Lancaster County where she can often get them at discounted rates. Vue favors Kona Bay Asian print fabrics and spends hours at the stores matching fabrics and embellishments for new and different projects.

With 11 children ranging in age from 27 down to 4, Vue continues to be very involved with family. In good times and bad, quilting was something she could always fall back on.

“It was always something there for her, to help her,” Vue’s daughter Kim says.

A: The current economic climate raises particular challenges for seniors, who tend to live on fixed incomes.

Older adults are often burdened by pharmaceutical expenses, which can lead to difficult decisions about medication usage for patients and physicians. Seniors are advised to consult with their physician before changing or discontinuing any of their medications. Resources are available to provide reduced cost or free medications to qualifying individuals. Additionally, seniors may find themselves managing their own health concerns as well as those of spouses or other relatives. Caregiving can be both very stressful and very rewarding. It is important for caregivers to attend to their daily health needs, including their emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Q: What mental health concerns might affect the senior population?

A: Most seniors continue to age with sound mental health. As in the general population, there are a significant percentage of older adults who experience specific mental disorders not considered a typical part of aging. If left untreated, conditions such as depression, anxiety, latelife schizophrenia, drug or alcohol misuse and abuse or suicidal thoughts can severely impair their lives. Additionally, dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions greatly impacts those with the illness as well as their families.

Assistance is available through the Center for Senior Health at Summa Akron City Hospital and community resources such as the Alzheimer’s Association and the Area Agency on Aging.

ow that April’s here, celebrate the arrival of spring with a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, Pa. Seven of the 17 gardens in this splendid Victorian glasshouse are devoted to the Spring Flower Show, which runs through April 11.

For the 2010 show, the color and design of the gardens reflect well-known operas.

Following that theme, the Palm Court’s towering palm trees and palms are highlighted by brilliant red and black tulips honoring Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” Step into the Serpentine Room and find azaleas, wild cherry and ponds with a nod to Giacomo Puccini’s “Madam Butterfly.”

During my self-guided tour of this garden under glass, I found the Orchid Room a delight as I could get up close enough to photograph miniature orchids. A bonus was finding glass artist Hans Godo Frabel’s whimsical elongated figures, “Longfellows” nestled in the greenery of the Orchid Room. Rushing water, exotic plants and lush undergrowth greet visitors to the “Headwaters of the Amazon” a special exhibition that includes an introduction to the complex ecosystem of this region.

At the start of my tour, I couldn’t take my eyes off Dale Chihuly’s exquisite chandelier in the Welcome Center. I found another of his pieces, “Desert Gold Star,” hanging from the ceiling of the Desert Room.

Take time to browse the Shop at Phipps for botanical and horticulture books, hand-crafted jewelry and educational games. Across the entrance hall, the Cafe Phipps is the place to stop for a cup o’ joe or to sample the cafe’s made-fromscratch soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees.

Check out the dates of additional spring horticultural events. The Phipps Great Plant Auction, April 30, gives garden buffs the chance to bid on rare and newly introduced plants. May 7-8 brings the May Market offering plants, accessories and strawberries for sale.

It was a short drive to my next destination, the Frick Art & Historical Center in Pittsburgh’s East End. It’s a site that encompasses the Frick Art Museum, a Car & Carriage Museum and Clayton, the restored Victorian home of industrialist Henry Clay Frick.

It was a step back to the Gilded Age on my docent-led tour of Clayton. I felt a sense of how this prosperous Pittsburgh family lived in the late 19th century.

Unlike some Victorian houses, I found Clayton to be less formal and what we would call today, child friendly. A breakfast room allowed a setting for informal meals for the family. Special touches for daughter Helen Clay Frick’s room included hand-painted flowers on the walls. In the library, we found a child-size leather armchair next to a set of adult chairs. A child’s drawing shares the space on the library walls along with paintings from Mr. Frick’s notable collection.

Our tour ended in the enclosed sunny front porch furnished with rattan furniture. Tunes, including Sousa marches, emanating from the orchestrion, a kind of electrically powered orchestra organ in this room, stayed with me as I left this fine house museum.

The Victorians loved flowers and in the style of the day, the Fricks had a domed greenhouse built to provide flowers for the house. The Children’s Playhouse, located next to the Greenhouse, serves today as the Visitor Center and gift shop.

Stop at The Cafe on the grounds for lunch or afternoon tea. This cozy eatery utilizes veggies, herbs and flowers grown on site in the kitchen garden.

It’s gourmet luncheon fare with a menu that includes wine, cocktails and beer.

Afternoon tea brings a tiered service of assorted finger foods, scones, pastries and chocolate with freshly brewed tea.

Sit back and enjoy the view from the many-windowed cafe or request alfresco dining.

Get Out in Butler County, Pa. If you go

ust north of Pittsburgh, you’ll find Pennsylvania’s number one state park, Moraine State Park - perfect for a day to kick back and relax, or to dig in to some outdoor recreation. The park offers everything from hiking and biking to windsurfing and geocaching.

Spend a relaxing day picnicking and sailing on the beautiful 3,225-acre Lake Arthur. You might even enjoy some wildlife watching or fishing. For the more active outdoor enthusiast, spend some time biking on the gorgeous seven mile paved biking trail or the 6- mile loop for mountain bikes.

Moraine is also a great place for hiking, with 28.6 miles of trails that follow the lake shore, wind through forests and fields and explore the habitats of the park. The North Country Trail, the country’s longest hiking trail also runs through and around the park.

Take some time to explore the nearby Jennings Environmental Education Center. Jennings provides a unique combination of prairie and forest; in fact, Jennings is home to the only protected prairie in Pennsylvania. Late July or early August is the best time to visit, as the prairie is in full bloom. You’ll be amazed by the stunning purple blazing star flower.

When you’re ready for a hearty meal, about 10 minutes from Jennings is a dining opportunity you won’t want to miss! North Country Brewing Co. in Slippery Rock has a one-of-a-kind rustic atmosphere, fresh brewed beer and unique menu selections such as frog legs and elk burgers. For those with more cautious taste buds, there are a lot of traditional menu offerings, as well.

So if you make a trip to Pittsburgh, don’t miss the opportunity to experience natural treasures in Butler County—you won’t regret a little extra driving!

An exhibition at the Frick Art Museum— 1934: A New Deal for Artists—looks back at the Depression through President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Public Works of Art Project. To accompany the Frick Art Museum’s 1934 exhibition, the Car and Carriage Museum has three vehicles manufactured in 1934 on display—a Dodge Brothers truck, a Ford Roadster Pickup and a Hudson Sedan.

Gardening Means Giving More Master gardeners in Summit County keep volunteer work growing.

nine others, helping backyard gardeners become more successful and environmentally responsible.

Students in OSU’s Master Gardener Program go through 17 weeks of classes that cover the fundamentals of gardening—insects, herbs, roses, trees, vegetables, etc. Ellsworth says that since they are working with gardeners of all experience levels these classes help “even the playing field.” But she explains that a master gardener means more than just being an expert in perennials, shade gardening and other such subjects. “A master gardener is someone who loves gardening, but also wants to share that love with other people,” she says.

Master gardener Priscilla Kiehl, also an educator for the program, agrees. “It’s the volunteer work that makes a master gardener,” she says. Program participants are required to give back 65 hours of service before they become certified. The Master Gardeners of Summit County, now 180 strong, continue to give back thousands of hours a year beyond that requirement. Kiehl explains how one master gardener has an herb farm and allows brain trauma patient to garden there, producing plants and vegetables that go to other organizations.

Kiehl became a master gardener in 1996 after raising her children. But she developed a passion at a young age when she’d help her English grandmother tend to her large garden of roses.

“She said I had the perfect little fingers to pull the grass at the bottom of the roses,” she says. Today she also serves as president of the Midland Hosta Society, sharing her love and knowledge of gardening on a local and national level. “Our goal is to teach good gardening practices,” she says.

hether it’s helping people make good pest management decisions, or gardening with seniors at a nursing home, master gardener Denise Ellsworth is busy sharing her love of nature with communities all over Ohio.

Ellsworth works as an agricultural and natural resource educator through Ohio State University’s Master Gardener Program.

Her work is based out of Summit County, but she also travels to

Ellsworth also sees the importance in teaching earth-friendly gardening. Growing up in western Pennsylvania, she learned to garden from her mother. Today, she loves her kitchen garden with all its herbs and vegetables, and her flowerbed with its array of colors. She makes a special effort to put in plants that bring in the good pests. “It’s important to garden in balance with nature, she says.”

Tips for Earth-Friendly Gardening 1. Keep the good guys around. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are important to gardens. These creatures pollinate our flowers as well as our vegetables. But insecticides can hurt the helpful bugs as well as the bad.

So go green and try to avoid pesticides. Plant aster and garden mums to attract the butterflies, and azaleas for the hummingbirds.

2. If you’re a new gardener, start small.

Too much garden can mean too many weeds, which can make things stressful. You’ll be more likely to keep with it if you’re not overwhelmed.

3. Stay away from plastic. An easy way to do this is buying seeds instead of plants. But if you do want to buy plants, try to find nurseries that recycle the plastic they come in.

4. Grow plants that are best for your local climate. The more suited the plants are for your area, the less inclined you’ll be to buy pesticides and fertilizers.

5. Keep a compost. This can include yard waste like grass clippings, hay straw and old plants. Also, using mulch can help hold in moisture so you won’t have to water as much.

Settling Down in the Rubber City Akron earns a spot in Barbara Corcoran’s “Top 10 Cities for Best Home Bargains”

“While the median home price in Akron is still 10% less than its 2007 peak, it’s only about 1% T less than it was a year ago.”

hinking of buying a home in the near future? According to real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, you’re in the right city to start looking. On NBC’s “Today” show, Corcoran recently rated Akron among the best cities in the country for home bargains.

What put Akron ahead? The city rated highly under Corcoran’s criteria, which included aspects such as decent housing prices, good schools and job growth. She also took into consideration where home prices have increased in the last year.

Corcoran considers these elements important when choosing a city to call home.

“Everyone likes to get a good deal on a house, a cheap price, but if you’re buying in a market where it’s still falling or in a market where you can’t get a good job or a good school, it doesn’t make sense,” she explained on the show. “These places fill all that criteria.”

Carol Jacobanis of Barbara Corcoran Inc. helped compile the list and explains that rising home prices are a sign of recovery. “While the median home price in Akron is still 10 percent less than its 2007 peak, it’s only about 1 percent less than it was a year ago,” she says. Corcoran used a beautiful cape house in West Akron as an example of the many quality homes selling at the median price, about $108,000. “That is one big house and in mint condition,” Corcoran told interviewer Ann Curry.

Jacobanis says that the number of new research, financial and high-tech businesses moving to Akron should improve job prospects in the city. “It’s not the old rubber capital of the world that Akron used to be, though it’s still home to the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company,” she says. Akron also has a low unemployment rate, 9.7 percent, just below the national average, along with a lot of young people moving in.

Akron realtor Nancy Holzwarth agrees that Akron is a thriving area and great place to locate to. She says Akron has a lot to offer for many reasons. “Akron is located within easy access of other major cities. It also offers many cultural activities and has wonderful metro parks and family oriented activities.” The city has 6,600 acres of parks and 33.5 miles of biking and hiking trails.

Right now Akron home prices are competitive and mortgage rates are at a 50-year low. A federal tax incentive of up to $8,000 is available for qualified first time and repeat buyers. “It’s a great time to buy a home in the Akron area,” Holzwarth says.

Wakeup Call Theresa Carter is inspired to raise heart health awareness.

hen Theresa Carter attended her first Go Red for Women luncheon a few years ago, she was inspired.

The message “was a complete wakeup call for me,” she says.

Since that time, she made it a priority to share what she learned with others—especially all the women in her life. “Heart disease is no joke and it is the No. 1 killer of women (especially African Americans),” she explains.

“The Heart Association provides awareness that can save lives and its mission is one that I totally support.” That’s why Carter says she’s proud to be an advocate on an even broader scale as chair of this year’s Go Red luncheon.

The reality of heart disease is personal for Carter, president of Omnova Solutions Foundation. With a family history of high blood pressure, she was “disappointed but not surprised” to be diagnosed with high blood pressure in the mid-1990s.

stay healthy. Carter is faithful about taking her low-dosage medication. She never misses a checkup, and she is very aware of what causes her pressure to escalate (typically stress or eating the wrong foods).

While she still enjoys all types of food and loves to eat, she also makes a conscious effort to watch her diet and to exercise daily. And when her blood pressure does go up, she takes immediate measures to get it under control. “I recognize the consequences of not being in control of ‘me’ and it really has made a difference,” she says.

Originally from Alabama, this long-time Copley resident serves on six non-profit community boards and several advisory councils and committees. She and her husband Garvin are committed to making a positive difference in the areas that matter to them. They have tried to instill the value of serving “without expecting anything in return” to their daughters, Erin and Cesily.

‘Electrician’ of the Heart Dr. Jennifer Cummings harnesses new technology to correct irregular heart rhythms.

A

t first glance, you wouldn’t guess she’s doing surgery.

Working from the Stereotaxis Electrophysiology Lab at Akron General Medical Center—one of only four of its kind in the state of Ohio—Dr. Jennifer Cummings, medical director for Cardiac Electrophysiology, sits at a multiscreened computer command center with mouse in hand. With her patient in the room next door, she works to find and correct serious irregular heart beats and other electrical short circuits via a robotic (magnetically driven) catheter that makes its way from two intravenous ports in her patient’s leg to their heart.

“There are two kinds of heart doctors—plumbers and electricians. I’m the electrician,” Cummings explains.

One of just 110 female electrophysiologists in the country, Cummings has found a way to combine her love of problem solving with her desire to help people. Her subspecialty is complex, rapidly changing and full of new possibilities, in part because of new technology.

In electrophysiology, there is no such thing as a “typical” patient, Cummings says. She sees everyone from 20-yearolds who need ablations to treat short circuits in their heart to 92-year-olds who need pacemakers.

This is one area of cardiology where there are not vast differences between

male and female patients, although Cummings noted that many female patients prefer women doctors.

Cummings, who grew up in Clinton and attended Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and graduated from Kent State University and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, knew she wanted to be a doctor long before deciding on a specialty.

While she was in medical school, her father had a heart attack and a bypass at Akron General. “Seeing how this changed his life truly affected me,” she recalls.

She chose to specialize in cardiology after being fascinated by just how much doctors and technology could do to help critically ill heart patients “get better so quickly with such a small thing as a stent or surgery,” she says.

MetroHealth, Dr. Andrea Natale and current partner, Dr. Robert Schweikert— Cummings chose the subspecialty of electrophysiology.

Training for cardiology is a huge time and life commitment for both men and women, Cummings says. But being in a male dominated and extremely competitive field “has provided some great opportunities,” she adds.

Today, 14 percent of cardiologists are women, compared to just 9 percent 10 years ago, and Cummings encourages the female students she mentors to step up to the challenge. “You can do this,” she tells them. “If you love it, do it.”

“It really is a fascinating, complex subspecialty with the most amazing rapidly developing technology,” she adds. “I absolutely love it.”

Living with a Heart Condition Schmidt family faces kids’ health challenges together

T

hirteen-year-old Laikyn Schmidt knows more medical terms than most kids her age.

She knows firsthand what a difference medical professionals make in their patients’ lives. She wants to be a nurse some day.

Laikyn and her 15-year-old brother, Logan, live with Long Q-T syndrome, or LQTS, a life-threatening, hereditary disease that affects the heart’s electrical rhythm.

It’s a bit like an accelerator that gets stuck and causes a car to race out of control, explains Dr. John Clark, pediatric cardiologist at Akron Children’s Hospital. “If it happens briefly, the child will pass out or have a seizure.

If it lasts longer, it can lead to sudden death.”

A child who passes out or has a seizure due to LQTS has about a 50 percent chance of sudden death over 10 years without treatment. Medication decreases the likelihood of the throttle getting stuck open, and reduces the likelihood of death to about 5 percent over 10 years.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators, ICDs, can lower the risk to less than one percent.

An ICD monitors heart rhythms continuously and delivers a shock to the heart anytime it detects a life-threatening arrhythmia. “It is like having an EMS team on standby 24/7,” Clark says.

Laikyn got her ICD in 2001. Because defibrillators were made for adults (Laikyn was just 4 years old then and small for her age) Clark and his colleagues devised a special procedure to implant an ICD (a little smaller than a deck of cards) in her abdomen instead of her chest. The wiring was too thick to be threaded through her small veins, so they embedded it under her skin instead.

Since Laikyn got her ICD, she has been very healthy. She continues to take medication daily. Her only restriction is that she cannot participate in contact sports.

Most days, the girl who loves math and talking on her cell phone and cheerleading (without the stunts), doesn’t give her ICD a second thought. When it is activated, the jolt she gets from the defibrillation gives her a really bad stomachache.

It’s “like being kicked by a horse.” (At least that’s how Logan describes it.)

Her husband, Bill, who has been working in Pennsylvania since his Ohio job shut down last July, still makes his family a priority. All four of the Schmidt children (Landon, 17, and Laurelyn, 10, who do not have the disease) support one another and pitch in to help when they’re needed.

Listen to Your Heart Karen Holloway explains why it’s important to know your body and be persistent when seeking medical care.

he wasn’t a smoker or a heavy drinker. She wasn’t overweight. She lived an active, healthy lifestyle. You wouldn’t expect someone who played volleyball competitively for 30 years and who hiked the Grand Canyon to have heart disease, would you?

Yet suddenly that was the case for Karen Holloway.

Looking back, Holloway recalls having symptoms for about a year, feeling as though she had a cement block on her chest. Her doctor diagnosed her with bronchitis and pneumonia, but Holloway felt she never really got over that. “I was short of breath and got tired very easily,” she says, explaining how suddenly simple tasks like climbing the stairs made her dizzy, and a few times she passed out.

Here are some signs a heart attack may be happening: • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

• Shortness of breath. This feeling may occur with or without chest discomfort.

• Other signs of discomfort. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

• As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

If you or someone you are with has chest discomfort, especially with one or more of the other signs, don’t wait longer than five minutes before calling 9-1-1 for help.

At that point, a doctor suggested Holloway undergo a stress test. She immediately failed the echocardiogram, and never made it onto the treadmill the next day. She explained her symptoms to Dr. Kevin Silver, a cardiologist with Summa Health System, who asked Holloway’s permission to consult his colleague, fellow cardiologist Dr. Michael Pelini.

Holloway underwent a heart catheterization, which showed she had an ejection fraction of 25 percent. Ejection fraction measures the amount of blood being pumped out of the heart. A healthy human would normally be at about 55 percent. Anything less than 40, and you’re at risk for sudden cardiac death.

Pelini suggested Holloway be hospitalized immediately. Like most women, though, Holloway wanted to first go home to make sure her three children were fed and taken care of. Pelini refused and personally wheeled Holloway over to Akron City Hospital for admittance.

In March 2004, Holloway was equipped with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or ICD. It’s a pacemaker and defibrillator combo that monitors the

heart’s rhythm. If the heart starts to beat abnormally, the device provides a shock to restore normal rhythm.

A few years later, in April 2007, Holloway went into sudden cardiac arrest. “I was down in the basement on my NordicTrack trying to do some exercise,” she recalls.

When she woke up, she was on the floor where the children had come home and found her.

“My husband and I were just starting to second guess whether we jumped into having the defibrillator in there along with the pacemaker,” says Holloway, who now credits the ICD for saving her life.

She had a new ICD implanted last year.

A teacher for students with special needs, Holloway took the rest of the school year off as a result of her health condition.

And in December 2007 she was put on medical retirement for five years. If she is medically able, Holloway could teach again in 2012, but she doubts that will be possible.

tions have helped to a degree, they also make her extremely tired. She now sleeps on average 12-15 hours every day, and has altered her sleep schedule so she is able to stay awake and spend time with her husband and children when they’re home.

Despite the challenges caused by her illness, Holloway does not feel sorry for herself. She is grateful to have a wonderful husband who helps around the house and attends every doctor appointment with her. She’s especially thankful that her children remain healthy. “You don’t want your children to be ill,” she explains.

“This is what God gave me, and he won’t give me more than I can chew. I feel very blessed.”

Holloway advises women to listen to their bodies and be persistent if something feels wrong. She says she didn’t feel right for a while, but her family physician seemed to blow it off. For those who find themselves in a similar position, Holloway suggests seeking a second opinion. “You are your best advocate,” she adds.

Holloway’s condition is called chronic congestive heart failure. Within that, the illness is labeled cardiomyopathy with syncope and fatigue. Though her medicaApril 2009

Age Doesn’t Matter No one is invincible when it comes to heart disease.

T

he week before Memorial Day 2009, Jennifer Noble was vacationing in London. “I hadn’t been feeling well,” she says.

“I had pain in the shoulder like I had slept funny.” Noble also had instances where her heart would race and she had difficulty breathing. She rationalized the pain, blaming it on her asthma or the distance of the trip.

After arriving home, Noble ate Memorial Day dinner at her parents’ house. She was helping clean up when it became increasingly difficult for her to unload the dishwasher. She didn’t feel well and needed to sit down.

Noble began asking her father questions about the heart attack he had when he was 45. She had pain in her chest, couldn’t catch her breath, and her arms were starting to tingle. Her blood pressure was 166/133. “At that point, I knew I had minutes to make a decision,” Noble recalls. Her family called a squad, which took her to Hillcrest hospital. They insisted she didn’t have a heart attack, but she was admitted for observation.

The next day a cardiologist confirmed that Noble did indeed have a heart attack. She had a 95 percent blockage in her LAD, left anterior descending artery, which feeds the left front side of the heart. “If I had left it untreated I would have died,” she says. At age 28, Noble had a cardiac catheterization and had a stent put in.

Reaching Out to Young Women

cised, and didn’t have high blood pressure or cholesterol.

Noble lost 10 to 15 percent of her heart function after the heart attack, though she has since gained it back through rehab. She now goes to the gym four to five times a week for at least 30-40 minutes, and watches her fat and sodium intake more closely. “Looking at me, you would never realize I’ve gone through this in the last year,” she says. An academic adviser coordinator at Kent State University, Noble continues to work, and since her heart attack she has completed her MBA with a concentration in Human Resources from the university.

In an effort to build upon the success of Go Red for Women, the American Heart Association once again offered the Coeds Go Red luncheon on Feb. 24. Coeds Go Red reaches out to female college students with age-specific information while providing outreach to their mothers and grandmothers, who also need to know the facts about women and heart disease. The Knight Foundation sponsored the luncheon, which was held at The University of Akron.

The event included a free, heart-healthy lunch and a presentation by expert speaker Suzanne Hughes, RN, MSN. At the end of the session, attendees were asked to personalize a pre-written letter to send to important women in their lives, detailing the importance of heart health.

Also during the luncheon, the AHA introduced a new online program, BetterU, which is a 12-week online seminar designed for women with the goal of empowering them to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. BetterU takes participants step-by-step through stress management techniques, smoking cessation and small, healthy lifestyle changes that can make a big difference in women’s health.

Featuring a social networking component, BetterU presents opportunities to blog and journal on the healthy changes this program promotes. It seeks to transform the way women receive and use heart health information, and the target audience of Coeds Go Red is an enthusiastic group for this type of online engagement.

On Feb. 3, Noble shared her personal story at half time of the Kent State women’s basketball team Go Red for Women game. Basketball players wore special Go Red for Women T-shirts during warmups and at halftime. In addition, the players videotaped clips featuring facts about women and heart disease that were shown on the Jumbotron during timeouts. Prior to the game, representatives from Robinson Memorial Hospital and the American Heart Association provided screenings and health information in the lobby.

During her speech, Noble stressed the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices, starting at a young age. “In the college environment it’s easy to make poor choices about diet and other activities,” she says, encouraging young women to take the time to “eat right, exercise and make healthy choices” She goes on to advise all women to talk to their doctor about their personal risk factors and learn about the different symptoms women exhibit. “Be persistent if you feel you need medical attention,” she explains. “Professionals look for textbook symptoms, and women tend to brush off those symptoms.”

No Time to Waste Quick reaction on the part of her family may have saved Karen Capps’ life.

ec. 25, 2009 was a memorable day for the Capps family. But not in a good way. That was the day that 46-year-old Karen Capps unexpectedly suffered a

stroke.

Despite having a headache, for which she took a few aspirin, Capps didn’t notice any of her symptoms at first, though she says she knew something was wrong when she tried to drink a sip of water and dumped it all over herself. Her husband, Gillie, and 17-year-old daughter Tiffanie knew something was wrong when they saw Karen walk into a wall on her way to the bathroom. “They knew something was wrong, but they didn’t know what,” Karen says. “We should all come with dipsticks.”

After Gillie called 911, paramedics arrived and confirmed Karen was having a stroke. They transported her to Akron General Medical Center, where Karen stayed for seven days.

Once she was released from the hospital, she spent about four or five days at Edwin Shaw Rehab. “I was one of the patients who was able to do most of the things and get higher marks,” she says, explaining that she soon was able to switch to outpatient therapy.

Because the stroke was on the right side of Karen’s brain, it affected the left side of her body. Karen’s left-handed, so it took a couple weeks before she was able write again, and even still her handwriting has changed, appearing more childlike.

Her speech is slowly improving, though the letters R and W still pose problems.

Overall, the biggest part of Karen’s recovery has been to know her limits. In addition, Karen now takes an aspirin every day, as well as an iron pill and Lipitor, to manage her high cholesterol. She is also in the process of quitting smoking. “You know how moms want to do all of it? You can’t,” she says, adding that she wants to stay healthy so she can continue to watch her children grow. In addition to Tiffanie, Karen and Gillie have an 8-year-old son, “Little Gillie.”

Thinking back to that fateful day, Karen recalls having hand pain so severe that she couldn’t continue to peel potatoes for dinner. She now recognizes that may have been a warning sign, and cautions others not to brush off unusual pains. She also suggests maintaining open communication with your doctor. “And go get your 40-year-old checkup,” she adds.

Hidden Risk Factors for Women This year, more than 100,000 U.S. women younger than 65 will have a stroke. It is not a geriatric disease, and it’s not confined to elderly overweight smokers who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Though those are the most common risk factors, there are other risk factors that are especially important for women younger than 55. * Migraines: Recent research shows that women who suffer from migraines with aura (visual disturbances such as flashing dots or blind spots) can be up to 10 times more likely to suffer a stroke, depending on other risk factors. * Birth Control Pills: Women who take even a low-estrogen birth control pill may be twice as likely to have a stroke than those who don’t, and the risk may increase if other risk factors are present. * Hormone Replacement Therapy: Women who take hormone replacement therapy may have a slightly increased stroke risk.

Pass It On Tips for raising heart-healthy, active children

H

elp your children develop good physical activity habits at an early age by setting a good example yourself.

Practice these heart-healthy habits with your kids: • Plan family outings and vacations that involve vigorous activities such as hiking, bicycling, skiing, swimming, etc.

• Give your children some household chores that require physical exertion, keeping in mind their levels of strength, coordination and maturity. Mowing lawns, raking leaves, scrubbing floors and taking out the garbage not only teach responsibility but can be good exercise.

• Observe sports and activities your children like, then find out about lessons and clubs. Some children thrive on team sports; others prefer individual activities. Some activities, like tennis and swimming, can be enjoyed for a lifetime and are much easier to learn during childhood.

• Discourage homework immediately after school to let children find some diversion from the structure of the school day. Kids should be active after school and before dinner.

Make the effort to stay involved in your child’s physical education classes at school. At daycare, make sure the kids exercise at least 20 minutes a day. Ask about frequency of classes and activity, class size, curriculum (instruction in lifetime fitness activities as well as team sports should be emphasized), physical fitness assessments, qualifications of the teacher (should hold appropriate certification in physical education and be an appropriate role model for students).

Physical fitness should be measured at the beginning and end of each year, and goals should be established for each child. Encourage your school board to emphasize skills students can use for the rest of their lives.

What Is Cardiovascular Disease?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Most heart and blood vessel problems develop over time and occur when your arteries develop atherosclerosis, a process that begins in childhood and involves a gradual buildup of plaque inside your arteries.

Plaque contains fat, cholesterol and other substances, and can grow large enough to significantly reduce blood flow through an artery. Most of the damage occurs when a plaque becomes fragile and ruptures.

Plaques that rupture can cause blood clots to form. These clots can block blood flow at the site of the rupture or can break off and travel through the artery to another part of the body. If either happens and blocks an artery that feeds the heart or brain, it causes a heart attack or stroke.

A-K-R-O-N Sign

F

or as long as most people can remember, the A-K-R-O-N name has been spelled out in big concrete letters on the hill beside the Rubber Bowl. State Rep. John Otterman, who grew up in Ellet, remembers the sign as a favorite place for kids to bike and enjoy a sack lunch overlooking the airport terrace in the ‘60s.

Local historians aren’t really sure when or why our hometown version of the Hollywood sign (which went up in 1923, by the way) was created.

Turns out the A-K-R-O-N letters were there before the Rubber Bowl was constructed, as the 1938 picture (top right) shows. Excavation work for our town’s 37,000-seat amphitheater was done by the Civil Works Administration, as part of FDR’s New Deal program. Dirt taken from the site was used to fill in some swampy areas at the airport.

We suspected the sign was put there by Bain Ecarius “Shorty” Fulton who started the airport on his Massillon Road farm and by 1929, became the Akron Municipal Airport’s first manager.

This Beacon Journal editorial chiding Fulton to spruce up the sign offers a clue. While it doesn’t pinpoint the sign’s beginnings, it does show that by April 27, 1938, the weathered sign already needed a paint job.

Brighten Up, Shorty Shorty Fulton, manager of the Municipal airport, ought to detail a squad of his workers to the task of giving a coat of white paint to the name of Akron that is traced in gigantic outline of conglomerate stone on the east slope of the airport, just north of Derby Downs.

When this legend was constructed several years ago, it stood out clear and attractive, visible for long distances from the air and from the remotest reaches of the airport. It will perform this service again if it receives the attention of earnest caretakers who know how to handle a paintbrush.

The A-K-R-O-N sign got an extreme makeover in 1995.

That year it was demolished and rebuilt, just 10 feet south of its original location as part of an ongoing project to raise and repave the runway and taxiways at the current Akron-Fulton International Airport.
