I would have loved to have written those lines. I am, however, almost as happy to have read them over and over again since I discovered T.S. Elliot in high school. I’ve mostly been a reader of fiction my entire life—from James Joyce to Henry Miller and about everyone in between. I also love poetry where my tastes run from “Beowulf ” to modern-20th Century and beyond. I tend to read fiction once (with the exception of “Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain and “Siddhartha” by Tomas Mann—now that I’ve started, I can think of way too many to name), but I read poetry over and over again.

For me it’s like listening to a piece of music over and over because it feels good—it harmonizes with something in your soul.

I don’t really know what this poem is all about, other than it follows the Holy Grail and the Fisher King’s saga, but I am drawn to the images and to what they mean to me.

My favorite T.S. Eliot poem is the “Four Quartets”, with “The Waste Land” following closely behind.

Spring is my favorite time of the year and this poem stirs in me feelings of rebirth and renewal; watching the bare spindly branches of the tree I see when I look up from this computer screen, begin to grow small green buds, which will flourish into a bright green

canopy covering my back yard. But now those buds are only the lush sounds of the earth springing to life from the dried tubers.

I’ve been planning and re-planning what I want to grow this season. I have not been planting gardens in recent years, mostly because I don’t like weeding and any garden depending on me doing that on a regular basis is doomed to failure. I’ve used pots and containers to grow everything from tomatoes to morning glories and I want to expand upon that this year. However, I have found a little triangular piece of ground in front of the garage.

Last year I planted sunflowers in this spot from plants along the front of our fence and was I ever surprised. What I thought were medium sized yellow sunflowers turned out to be, what my friend Trish has identified as Mexican Sunflowers. The plants themselves turned out to be 15 feet tall, with small, (by sunflower comparisons) bright orange-red flowers all over the plant. They were beautiful and I hope to plant them again. This triangular piece of ground is in front of the sunflowers and I want to make it an herb garden. I’ve planted herbs in pots and some herbs take to that, but others need room to grow and spread their wings. I’m not a really good gardener, not someone with whom you would trust your houseplants, but I think if I concentrate on this one little patch of ground I can perhaps let it grow into something edible.

I now see dozens of blackbirds silhouetted in the trees waiting for me to throw out the first seeds of spring. The bird feeder, however, draws all the other birds and most of the squirrels and chipmunks in the backyard.

They, in turn, keep Juneau and Buster busy chasing them. I know that there are skunks in the neighborhood (not the people) so I try

to keep both dogs inside during dawn and dusk hours. The other critters around here are raccoons, which live in the storm sewer inlets and under the small garden sheds that populate our neighborhood. We also have the occasional opossum eating the cat food on the back porch. I think that planning projects and getting into things you know nothing about keeps one a step ahead of the reaper.

The end of the first section of “The Waste Land” is called “Burial of the Dead” and ends thus:

“That corpse you planted last year in your garden, Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year?

Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed?

Oh keep the Dog far hense, that’s friend to men, Or with his nails he’ll dig it up again!”

project in Akron aims to improve the city's outdated sewer system. The Akron Waterways Renewed program aims to restore local waterways, eliminate sewer overflows and make water healthier for everyone in Akron. The City of Akron estimates that the project will be completed by 2027.

Akron football promotes Brett Ekkens to offensive line coach Akron offensive graduate assistant Brett Ekkens has been promoted to offensive line coach by Zips coach Terry Bowden, according to Sports Illustrated.

Ekkens had been a graduate assistant at Akron the past two seasons. He replaces former Zips offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darrell Funk, who left early last month to become Purdue’s offensive line coach.

A Metallic Memento From cleaning marathon to memory lane

Spring cleaning. Depending on the state of your home, and your personal preferences in the cleaning department, this can be a tedious task. Windows are scrubbed and opened wide to purge stale, stagnant air.

Floors are cleansed with lemon-scented disinfectant. Bulky winter gear is folded and packed away into water-tight plastic containers, banished to the lowest levels of the dwelling. Each of these processes transforms your home from the cave-like place in which you spent the cold months, to a warm comfortable place.

Now, I’m not saying that I did all of these things. That would take a lot of time that my husband and I never seem to have. However, we recently busted out the lemon Pledge, disinfectants and plastic boxes. Random collections of small detritus were gathered and sorted.

The cleaning marathon can really be summed up in two words—we organized.

It feels great to have everything in it’s own place, making the hours spent sorting random things worth it. What ended up making the whole process even more worthwhile was a little discovery.

There are things that you just hold onto. Sometimes there’s a reason—sentiment, perhaps—but other times you just keep it. I am by no means a hoarder. I know I can’t keep everything and I don’t want to.

However, there are some small items that are linked tightly to memories. When they pop up again unexpectedly, it always leads to a trip down memory lane.

This time, my busy hands stumbled across a small metallic object. It was dull, scratched with years of wear, but the deep blue color was still there. The small stop sign-shaped tag had belonged to my first dog.

Wilma was a salt and pepper Schnauzer that my parents had brought home on Valentine’s Day when I was four years old. To say that the little bearded lady was an amazing, loyal, family dog—though 100 percent true—might feel like a hollow cliché. However, she was a part of our family.

Anyone who has experienced the bond that forms between a human and a loving pet will understand this. If you haven’t, it can be a little difficult to explain. To us, she wasn’t just four-legged and furry, she was a bundle of personality. The love was mutual. We had many wonderful years together before she became sick with diabetes. My parents worked closely with our local veterinarians to treat her and keep her happy. The treatments granted us about two more years with our beloved girl before she passed away.

As I looked at one of her Fulton County Dog tags, I wasn’t overwhelmed by sadness. Instead, I started to think about what the veterinarians had done for her. Just like a great doctor can help a human through a difficult illness, a great vet can help a pet. This month I had the opportunity to speak with several passionate veterinarians in The 330. Each of them understands the love between an owner and their pets because they have experienced it first-hand. I asked them about not only their work, but their fuzzy—and feathered and scaled in a few cases—family members. Each of them explained how being pet-parents has helped them connect to their clients.

Spring cleaning allows you to open your home, making space for new memories to happen. Each time my puppy, who’s almost two years old, bounds through our home, I think of the past puppies. So happy and such wonderful additions to our lives, I’m glad there are people like the ones in this issue keeping their tails wagging. So here’s to many more days of playing ‘give me back the roll of paper towels,’ or ‘let me wipe your muddy paws please,’ with our furry family member.

Wagging the Dog / Local dog walker is passionate about pet care /

Jackie Pekar, owner of South Paw Pet Sitting, has never been bitten by a dog. But she did have to feed Swenson’s cheeseburgers to a client’s Doberman to keep it from attacking her once. Within three days, that Doberman was eating out of Pekar’s hand. “It was so cool that eventually I won this dog over,” she says. “I love being able to handle a situation like that.”

A Brecksville native and long-time Akron resident, Pekar was the kind of child who always brought home injured birds or stray dogs and cats. While attending Kent State University, Pekar read “Pet Sitting for Profit,” by Patti Moran, president and founder of Pet Sitters International, and was inspired to launch her own company. Now in its 11th year, South Paw is still growing, with six employees, four of whom are former clients themselves.

Pekar loves taking her own dogs—two rescued dachshunds, a basset hound and what she calls the Great American Brown Dog—out to explore local parks and festivals. Sometimes she stays home with her tuxedo cat, Oreo, but she really prefers being outdoors.

How many dogs do you walk at one time?

JP: We don’t do pack walks, like how you see in New York or San Francisco. Depending on the dogs, we only walk three or four at a time. My philosophy behind that is, we’re very concerned with safety. We want to make sure the dogs are happy. When I watch people do that, it doesn’t even look like the dogs are enjoying themselves.

The walk should be for the dog, and not for me.

How many miles do you walk in a day?

JP: I don’t know the miles, but on my pedom10

eter, I average about 16,000 steps a day. I have walked up to 23,000, but that’s starting at 6:30 in the morning, at Christmas or Thanksgiving, when we’re doing daily walks and vacation walks. That’s a super busy day, and it takes a long time for me to recover from that. You’d think I’d be in super good shape!

not a vet or animal behaviorist, but I take these classes on a lot of behavior and nutrition issues because a lot of people get into the vet office and don’t know what to ask or are afraid to ask. I try to arm the client so maybe they’ll know what to ask the vet or trainer, or maybe do a search on their own and have a starting point.

What’s your favorite breed of dog?

What’s the advantage of using a professional pet sitter?

JP: My favorite would have to be the basset hounds. They’re so funny and goofy and have such a good nature. I volunteer for BAGS [Beautiful Aging Gracefully Seniors], a small grassroots rescue that specializes in older bassets. Since I was little girl, I always wanted a basset. Now Suki’s been with me eight years.

I’d love to get a blood hound too. I like them long and low.

You’ve attended the Pet Sitters International Conference, veterinary conferences and other educational opportunities. Why is education important to you?

JP: I’ve taken classes on everything I think would relate to my clients, like improper feline elimination or geriatric pet care. I’m

JP: As a professional pet sitter, you want someone who’s bonded and especially that has liability insurance. Insurance is never an issue until you need it. Make sure they’re first-aid trained, [and] if they have to deal with an emergency situation, they’re not going to have a meltdown. This is a super fun job, but I take it very seriously. We try to be as professional as we can and we back that up with education.

What is the most unusual pet you’ve cared for?

JP: Probably the coolest set of animals I cared for was a flock of chickens in Highland Square. I’d done a lot of parrots, African grays and cockatiels, but never chickens. I learned

in “chicken 101” [that] at nighttime they go to roost in their coop, [and] in the daytime they have free range in the yard. I went over there to tuck them in, and [was] doing a head count, and there was a possum in there!

They probably heard me scream all the way in Cleveland. I had to chase him out. I should’ve had a GoPro on my head: me with a shovel trying to chase this possum out of the coop.

Now, it’s hilarious, but it was such a sight. It’s never a dull moment in the life of a pet sitter!

All Is Not Lost / Nostalgic book explores area’s former gems /

The only constant in life is change. Children grow up, fads come and go, and places that once seemed utterly permanent crumble, burn or get demolished. Such is the way of progress.

Mark Price’s latest book, “Lost Akron,” looks at 50 places in Summit County that fell by the wayside of progress over the years.

Schumacher Cereal Company, the Armory, the Palace Theater, World of Rubber Museum: all of these places were important to Akron’s position as a thriving hub of the Western Reserve. Until they weren’t anymore.

Born and raised in Akron, Price has been writing about the history of the city for over 20 years, largely in his popular weekly Akron Beacon Journal column, “This Place, This Time.”

The History Press compiled many of his columns into Price’s first book, “The Rest is History: True Tales from Akron’s Past,” in 2012.

The history bug bit Price early, when he picked up a copy of Dr. George Knepper’s “Akron, a City at the Summit” (1981, Summit County Historical Society) sometime in the ‘80s. “It had never occurred to me, being young, that there had been giant buildings on lots that were now vacant 12

downtown,” he says of the inspiration Knepper’s book brought him.

The chapters in Price’s latest effort are organized chronologically, allowing a reader to get a comprehensive sense of the area’s evolution.

They’re also short, with an emphasis on documented first-hand observations and rare photos. Price buried himself in research for the book for several months at the Akron-Summit County Library’s Special Collections and The University of Akron Archives in the Polsky building—itself a chapter in his book. But he wasn’t starting completely from scratch.

“I was always lucky that my parents and grandparents were from this area and passed down stories about the way things used to be,” he says. “So I kind of had an idea of where old buildings, theaters or stores used to be.”

His favorites are the places he had some personal memories of, like Rolling Acres Mall and the Polsky and O’Neil’s stores in downtown. Those, of course, still april 2016

exist physically, though their purposes have changed. Many of the features in Price’s book are exactly what the title suggests: lost forever.

The Richfield Coliseum, for example, once shook with the baseline of such groups as Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen and Rush. The huge, squat, poured-cement arena was razed in 1999 by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, leaving behind a grassy meadow largely populated by songbirds of a more wild pedigree.

“I worked at the Coliseum, had an internship there, so that’s probably one of my favorite places,” he says. “A lot of my memories are of places being knocked down because that’s what they were doing during my childhood.”

Price’s book is an easy, nostalgic read that will remind long-time residents of the area’s rich history and introduce newcomers to some of the places that helped develop Akron’s quirky vernacular. One chapter mentions how Central Garage, built in 1919 to accommodate the burgeoning automobile craze, had giant hooks installed on its roof in the ‘30s in anticipation of parking airships there. The six-level complex came down in 1968 to make way for the Akron Innerbelt of State Route 59—itself currently under consideration for demolition.

Young or old, new here or native, most readers will enjoy Price’s concise yet colorful language in detailing the places Akron has lost. As the author himself says, “If people are interested in nostalgia or history, they’ll like reading “Lost Akron”; it has a lot of interesting facts about the past.”

Keep it Simple / The little dancing leaf, or, why complicate things? /

It is a good thing, on certain days—days often, but not always, touched with a kind of melancholy or uneasiness—to stop and consider something natural, something indifferent to the this and that of one’s daily life. I don’t expect I’ll encounter many dissenting voices shouting “nay” to this observation.

And so it was one gray day not long ago when I tilted my gaze upwards, not to the low-ceilinged canopy of stratus clouds packed dense and unyielding as far as I could see, but to a stubborn leaf, dry and unliving, clinging to a half-dead oak in my side yard. The day was gusty, and the rapid-fire bursts of wind made this leaf dance and twirl on its branch, a frenetic, unchoreographed ballet of stick and shifting cells, freeform and jazzy like an expression of joy.

“It’s so simple,” I said to myself. And despite the fact that a variety of scientific forces were at play in the making of that moment—from biology to physics to maybe even theoretical mechanics (who can know?)—I can think of few things simpler than a leaf dancing in the wind. When I finally pulled my gaze from that happy, little leaf, my mind snapped back to the matters churning the thick stew of anxiety residing in my gut. Into my head popped the driving chorus of a modern pop classic: “Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated?” (You know it.)

That is, I feel, an excellent question. When did the basic function of carrying out a human existence become so complicated?

I’m asking this question from an uncommon (though hardly unique) position, having 14

shucked a great many modern conveniences some years back in an attempt to gain perspective on complication’s counter-concept, “simplicity” and apply it to my life. But I’m still asking, because I don’t know.

“If you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity,” says Annie Dillard in her seminal work, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, “so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days.” It’s a wonderful idea, though I must add that, as a person whose annual income sits substantially below the national average, I’m not so sure poverty and simplicity are natural bedfellows. Being poor can get really complicated.

The notion, however, that drives Dillard’s comment (which, if memory serves, funcapril 2016

tioned as a metaphor—Dillard, a nature writer with a philosopher’s stare, knows the value of a little leaf ) is undeniable: Learn to love the small things, for the world is filled with small things. A recent stroll through a big-box department store revealed plates, towels and other household sundries promoting a return to simplicity; ironic interpretations aside, the basic idea has merit. Things have gotten really complicated. Why? “What is the use of complicating the passwords that have stood the test?” asks Albert Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus. I’ve seen so much complication of the passwords—the basics, I mean, the work to eat to live to love—in my short 38 years on this earth.

To illustrate this point, I’ll share a personal fact about professional me: I get a lot more work if I label myself a “Specialized Content Provider” than simply saying “I’m a Writer.”

The difference is a 300 percent markup of character real estate on the screen and/or page and literally nothing else, but I profit by overcomplicating a role that, until very recently, was well-understood (Walt Whitman as a Creative Content Producer—just imagine that).

I feel like maybe our culture has become addicted to these senseless complications, as they reward people with a false sense of accomplishment when they gain an understanding of underlying meaning: We know the passwords. The obvious sacrifice, however, in interpreting this baroque list of societal expectations is simplicity, which, now piled beneath boisterous jargon and empty superlatives, we genuinely miss and desire in our daily life. It’s not a cycle so much as an anxious, ideological dichotomy subconsciously fostered every time we punch up that resume.

How do we simplify, then? Well, I think we need to choose joy.

Oh, that’s trite, I know, but it’s important.

Please don’t confuse the euphoric relief gained through knowledge of the ever-changing list of passwords with simple joy—that’s survival.

But just look at this word: “joy.” Three letters, two phonics. We don’t need to call it a “stimulus-triggered release of reward chemicals in the pleasure centers of the brain.” It’s just joy. It’s simple, and that’s what we so desperately want.

So let’s do it—let’s simplify. Maybe someday we’ll get those job titles shortened or create a financial system that’s navigable by people without advanced degrees in economics, but the first step isn’t nearly so complicated. The first step is right out the door, to that tree you love but always forget about. Pick a leaf and watch it dance in the breeze. For the time you see it, forget about your workplace anxieties and financial concerns. The leaf is simple, it is basic, it is joy and, in that moment, it is everything.

ADDY® Awards The annual ADDY® Awards Ceremony is where the Akron chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) recognizes excellence in local advertising. This year’s gala event was held February 12th at the Akron Civic Theater, where co-chairs Steven Govern and Gerald Payn lent a presidential air to the proceedings in their Abraham Lincoln attire.

Event officials reported that four records were broken this year, with 273 entries, 56 event partners, 316 event attendees and 60 sponsored students. A total of 65 professional awards and 20 student awards were distributed during the event.

Charitable giving is a time-honored American tradition. According to charitynavigator.org, Americans gave $358.38 billion in 2014, the equivalent to about 2 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). The majority of that giving, $258.5 billion, came from individuals like you and me.

Philanthropic passions strike people of all ages for many different reasons. Some choose to support personal values; some give with the prospect of reducing their tax burden or other estate planning opportunities. There are many ways to give strategically, benefitting both you and your chosen charities. Here are a few examples: Donor-advised funds: For individuals and families with strong charitable inclinations, donor-advised funds allow an immediate income tax deduction for contributions, and you may choose the charity or multiple charities to benefit from your contribution, as well as determine when the grants will be given.

Charitable remainder trust (CRTs): The CRT is used by many people who intend to make gifts (generally $250,000 or more) to charity, but wish to retain a stream of income for their lifetime or a designated period of years.

charitable trust pays no capital gains and all of the sales proceeds can be reinvested. You state in your document what annual return you wish to receive from the trust.

You will receive a charitable deduction for the charitable remainder value of the trust as projected when you make your gift. Two types of CRTs are commonly used: The charitable remainder unit trust (CRUT): The CRUT is popular for many donors because multiple gifts can be made throughout the life of the trust. The percentage income payout to you is based on the market value of the account at the end of each calendar year. This type of account is subject to market risk and volatility, but allows for increased income in up markets.

The charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT): The CRAT is popular among those who want a guaranteed stream of income from their charitable gift, regardless of market conditions. The annual income return is calculated based on the original value of the gift. The value of the charitable deduction is calculated on the charitable remainder when the gift is made. No additional contributions are allowed to this trust.

Family foundations: Higher net worth families often choose to establish their own private

family foundation allows for family control over decision-making concerning the charitable recipients of the gifts, which may change from year to year. A minimum of 5 percent of the principal value of the foundation must be distributed to charities each year. Like the CRTs, these accounts will cost more to establish and require annual tax filings.

Gifts of appreciated stock: Instead of making cash gifts, you can avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated value of your assets and receive a tax deduction of up to 30 percent of your Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by making a gift of appreciated stock directly to your favorite charity.

Outright gifts of cash: Cash gifts must be immediately useable by the charity to qualify for a charitable deduction of up to 50 percent of your AGI on your Federal 1040 tax return.

Animals can be man’s—and woman’s—best friends. They are compassionate companions that, once welcomed into your life, become family. Whether covered in fur, feathers or scales, our pets enrich life and add so much to each day. Many veterinarians in The 330 understand this on a professional and personal level—allowing them to relate to the struggles of the pet parents seeking their help.

Dr. Mary Dubelko has many animal family members. She has three dogs named Tootsie, Rocco and Skye. She also has four cats, 2 snakes —including a brightly-colored snake named Eragon—and leopard geckos.

Dr. Mary Dubelko “I really enjoy what I do and every day is something new and different,” says Dr. Mary Dubelko, the owner of Keystone Veterinary Clinic. Dubelko is very passionate about her work.

Her love of animals is not only expressed in the clinic, but also at her home where she has many beloved pets. The house is a full one, with five humans, four cats, three dogs, two snakes and several leopard geckos. Each of these pets brings something unique to the table. With several boys in the house, Dubelko has a corn snake and king snake under her roof. Though she’s not a big fan of reptiles, Dubelko says that the corn snake, Eragon, is a charmer. “Eragon should really be an ambassador for snakes,” she says. “He’s very friendly and just not a quick-moving kind of guy. He’s very chill.”

Having a full house provides her with perspective at work, she says. “I think it gives me a different perspective when I’m making either diagnostic recommendations or treatment recommendations.

I want the best care that is reasonably possible for both my own animals, as well as the clients’ family pets that come in,” says Dubelko.

The bond between animals and their human companions is something that pet owners understand very well. “We know in our family how much we value our pets and I think it’s just keeping that in the forefront when we’re working with clients,” says Dubelko. “These animals are very special to someone and we hope that we could treat them to the best of our ability.”

Dr. Tracie Springer Dr. Tracie Springer always knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. From her visit to Valley Animal Hospital with her first dog—the same place where she later volunteered and now works—she knew that she wanted to spend her days with animals. “I was scienceminded, animals tend to like me and I like working with them. It took the two things that I was good at,” says Springer.

Though she isn’t a specialist, Springer has an interest in emergency medicine and dentistry. “Emergency work is no fun because it’s never a good thing when animals come in and need emergency help, but it’s exciting,” she says. “You get to stabilize them and calm the owners down and get the patient back to where it needs to be.”

Helping animals through difficult situations is something that Springer does both on and off the clock. Her pets at home can attest to that. Springer currently has two furry family members: a long-haired dachshund named Lily and a Siamese mix cat named Ash. Both entered her life in unexpected ways. “I had a client at my last practice who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She didn’t have any close family, and she came right from the doctor and asked me to take her dogs.”

The second of the two dachshunds Springer brought into her life is no longer with her, but the animals have definitely impacted her life. “You meet these animals throughout your day and not every single one, but most of them have homes. But every once in a while, you’ll run across one that needs some extra help. It’s always nice when you can help them and take them in.”

Dr. Gary Riggs Dr. Gary Riggs has worked with a wild assortment of animals throughout his career. Focusing primarily on exotics, he specializes in birds. The Wadsworth native practices in Norton, Wadsworth and Copley, as well as working for the Cleveland Aquarium and being a consulting veterinarian at the Akron Zoo and an exotic animal sanctuary. Riggs and his wife even have a wildlife conservation foundation where they do rehabilitation work for Stark Parks and the animals at Summit Metro Parks.

Riggs has always loved exotic animals and loves the fact that he gets to work with them daily. This passion goes beyond the walls of his office. His home is full to the brim with beloved pets, including Bruiser the Sulcata tortoise, Ernie the Blue and Gold Macaw, Oose the Toulouse Goose, Oowie the Australian Black Swan, Ozzy the White Swan, and a pair of Zebra finch brothers. He also has a dog—an Akita named Taebo—and a rescue cat named The Dude.

Each of his pets has a distinct personality, Riggs says. “If you tell someone who’s never had a rabbit that a rabbit has a very smart, distinct personality, they’d never believe it. But once you’re around them, you see that. Same thing with tortoises— my tortoise knows his name. He recognizes different people and comes when he wants something.”

From the exotic to the mundane, animals have specific health needs, and that’s where Riggs’ breadth of experience really shines.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there about these pets and often times, they have so many health problems, but it’s mainly because people don’t know how to take care of them,” he says. “If we can educate people and let these guys have a much safer and longer life, that’s really rewarding.”

Dr. Steve Scott Dr. Steve Scott has had an interesting road through his veterinary career.

Originally from California, Scott didn’t always want to be a veterinarian. He intended to become a marine biologist and was in the process of doing so, when he realized what veterinarians brought to the table. “I wanted to be more handson, so I volunteered at several animal clinics,” says Scott.

Scott studied at Ross University in the Caribbean on St. Kit’s before eventually ending up in Ohio at his current position, Akron-Peninsula Veterinary Office.

Though he works with both cats and dogs, he has an interest in treating cats.

“Cats are funny because they’re very subtle and cryptic,” he says. “You’ve got to catch the small daily changes with kitties to catch something before it happens.”

He shares his home with two cats, Ivy and Blaze, and a labradoodle named Harley Quinn. “They’re all rescues; we’re into rescues,” says Scott. “We’re not crazy cat people or dog people, but if there’s one out there, we’ll be there for them.”

Defying stereotypes, Scott says that his dog and cats are actually very affectionate with each other. “[Harley] and Ivy are best of friends. They sleep together, groom each other—I never had a dog and cat relationship like that before.

They love each other.”

Dr. Mike Bridges An emergency room can be a terrifying place. All of the occupants of that space are stressed and filled with worry as the one they love is treated for whatever ails them. Now, picture an emergency room full of your favorite furry friends. Dr. Mike Bridges works for the Stark County Veterinary Emergency Clinic where he strives to ease each animal’s pain, restoring them to a healthy, happy place. “It’s pretty amazing. Unfortunately, a lot of sadness with severe cases, but there’s also a lot of happy clients and animals too when we save lives. It’s very rewarding,” says Bridges.

This may sound like a very full house, but before their children were on the scene, Bridges had 15 animals. Both Bridges and his wife are veterinarians, resulting in a deep love of their animals. “All of our pets come from one of our clinics,” says Bridges.

Another of his cats, Toli, had suffered a traumatic injury involving an electric wheelchair. Once again, he recuperated and found a home with his caregiver.

The injuries he sees can be truly awful and though he approaches each situation with the clinical focus of a professional, Bridges is also a pet parent. “It’s one of those things where I need to step back. CATS v. DOGS In Defense of Cool Cats

In Defense of Mankind's Best Friend

Opening Remarks: Ladies and gentlemen of the readership, I submit to you that cats are the best pets because theirs is a love that must be earned. Rather than throwing themselves at any humanoid who happens to bring a little body heat their way, cats select only a few special humans onto whom they will bestow the glorious purrs, gentle head-rubs and fuzzy belly rubbing privileges that bring immeasurable joy and satisfaction to the lucky recipient.

Opening Remarks: Esteemed readers, I would like to submit that there is nothing like a good dog blanket. With one flop of that furry, warm girth, your best friend reassures you of their love and devotion. Unlike some of the more cold and calculating animal companions out there, you always know where you stand with a canine.

Main argument: Egyptians revered felines as descendants of the gods, often embalming and entombing them with their ever-grateful owners. These savvy Pharaoh types understood that the independence and aloofness of cats were qualities to admire and strive toward. Without realizing it, these ancient people were getting a glimpse of the characteristics that would become, some 2,000 years later, what young people call “cool.”

Like Arthur Fonzarelli or the cheerleaders in your high school, cats do not beg for your attention; they require your admiration. Cats do not follow you or your orders; they move to the beat of some other drummer that has been kidnapped and coerced into beating in place of their cold, calculating hearts.

We call this “independence,” a truly American quality. In that sense, cats are the most patriotic of pets because they embody the spirit of the Founding Fathers: terse, enigmatic, and fiercely self-sufficient.

Until feeding time. But even the settlers needed some help from the natives.

The point is, when a feline walks onto your lap or leans up against you and allows you to bask in the furnace-level heat of her soft, silky body, you know you’ve earned it. And that bond of earned love— forged in the cold fire of a cat’s icy intellect—is forever.

Closing remarks: Ladies and gentleman, the evidence presented has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that cats do, indeed, make the best pets. Their love is not the easy love of a creature that slobbers indiscriminately on strangers and family alike. It is the singular love of a highly intelligent, selective being who chooses her human companion with care and discretion. Whether you know the challenging love of a feline first-hand or still aspire to one day experience it, I’m sure you will do the right thing and rule in favor of my client, the coolest of cool cats.

Main argument: The title of best friend is one well earned by a good dog. Loyal to the end, they will stand—sit, lay, snore, dream (yes, they dream and it’s amazing) and play—by your side. With you to the end, dogs understand that life is about more than just themselves. Dogs are team players.

There are numerous cases where dogs have saved their human companion’s lives. Balto, for example, was one famous canine who led a sled dog team transporting diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska. It was the winter of 1925 and diphtheria was highly contagious—killing many children. Balto was one of the dogs that brought the cure to the isolated community of Nome, inspiring the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

You may say that he was just a dog pulling supplies, only an animal, but that doesn’t explain why many visit an honorary statue of him in New York City’s Central Park. He glows bronze from the many hands that have touched his back over the years. He’s honored as a hero.

Dogs work with us. They are on the police force, in schools, therapist’s offices, helping the blind, the traumatized and the injured.

These furry companions provide strength and security to our lives.

They do not just sit upon a cushion, demanding respect and homage—they earn their place in our hearts.

Closing remarks: Dear readers, the facts are plain. Dogs are the best companions possible. From the day of their first snuggle and wobbly walk to the last gentle lick before the great nap, your dog is a devoted friend. They trust you and count on you to care for them. In turn, they protect and work for us. Keeping humans happy and safe. Each and every day, the bond grows stronger until you can’t imagine not coming home to their joyous, sloppy kisses. Their tails slap against floors and walls, drumming out the rhythm of their love. The love of a dog is a wonderful thing, possibly one of the finest things you can earn.

Most people have that one school photo from junior high they really wish had never happened. Glasses, braces, acne and awkwardness were framed and memorialized on the living room wall.

In our chagrin at tween awkwardness, it’s easy to forget that school photos are something of a privilege—a privilege not every family can afford. One local photographer realized this and started working to change it.

Nicole Bozickovich was a recent Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) graduate working as an art teacher at STEAM Academy in Akron when she noticed that most of her students were opting out of school photos.

Thinking about it over the summer break, Bozickovich realized that money was probably the prohibitive factor, and she started working on a solution.

“I was just going off the idea of what would happen if I was able to provide school photos for the children I work with,” she says. Her brainstorm led Bozickovich back to CIA, where she had first melded her passion for photography with teaching in a class called Artists in the Classroom. That class brought Bozickovich’s artistic talents into a charter school classroom in Cleveland, fused it with her affection for little ones, and pointed her toward her current job.

“After that course, I knew right away that I was supposed to teach,” she says. “I was made to teach inner-city kids.”

Bozickovich got in touch with the head of the photography department at CIA, Nancy McEntee, and laid out her plan.

“I had a strong relationship with her, and I told her I had this idea where I wanted to photograph all 150 students at my school,” Bozickovich says. “I asked her if there was any way the department would lend me the equipment to do this.”

Not only did McEntee and CIA lend Bozickovich all the equipment she needed, they provided four current-student volunteers to help with the photo shoot.

Bozickovich organized everything, from sending a letter home to parents, to scheduling the times for each class, to organizing which volunteer had which responsibilities, to making sure they had all the right equipment.

“That was a little scary for me just because I put so much trust into [my volunteers],” she says. “It was like, oh my goodness! If we miss something, I don’t know what we’re going to do. There’s no backup!”

As the big day approached, Bozickovich could tell her idea was having an impact on her students and their parents. One parent came in confused about the letter, and when her child’s teacher explained that the photos were, indeed, free, she seemed overwhelmed.

“She [said], you have no idea what this is doing for us,” Bozickovich says. “And I [responded], that’s the point!”

Bozickovich also noticed changes in attitude among the children with the mere prospect of a photo shoot.

“Students were coming up to me and [saying], ‘Oh Miss B! I got my hair done today for picture day!’’ she says. “And we had a little boy who came in for his picture with a suit and tie on, so you could see the amount of confidence these kids had.”

The shoot went off without a hitch, but then Bozickovich was faced with another hurdle.

How would she get the photos printed? Not wanting to ask for too much from CIA, she had told McEntee that she would figure it out somehow. She worked out what she thought would be a cost-effective package—one 8x10, two 5x7s and four wallets—and sent that information to McEntee, not expecting anything from her.

“When I told her that, she told me the institute would donate [materials] so every student could have the package deal and be guaranteed that,” Bozickovich says.

The experience has been quite overwhelming for Bozickovich, who is now working to make her idea grow into something that can help more children have the privilege of taking home photo memories of their formative years.

“My goal is to create a nonprofit [that] will then be able to provide school photos for other charter schools in the Akron and Cleveland community so that every student can get a school photo and not have to pay,” she says.

Inspired by LeBron James’ charitable efforts for young people in our area, Bozickovich is quite busy these days working with CIA to create internships for photography students, learning to write grants for her project and dealing with all the attention her idea has garnered.

At the end of the day, the hard work needed to make it happen is worth it, if she can overshadow some of the negative aspects of her students’ lives with this one positive program.

“When we think of photo shoots, it’s usually really important people,” Bozickovich says. “I wanted [my students] to know that they were important enough to be captured in a photo.”

It started with a few hardwood slabs. A few years later, says Ernie Hershberger of Homestead Furniture in Mount Hope, the furniture maker’s Live Edge line is hot, hot, hot. Each piece captures the raw beauty of solid hardwood slabs, preserved by Homestead artisans in a high quality finish. A metal or other base complements the stunning surface. Deployed as tables, bar tops and more, these are statement and accent pieces you might look for out of Boston, New York, or San Francisco.

“We barely keep up with demand,” Hershberger says. “Right now there are 50 sample pieces leaning against the wall in the showroom.

It’s special. It’s unique.”

The range of modern styles from fine producers in Holmes County might surprise you. What the folks at Homestead see and make available through custom work for design clients and furniture shoppers is a trend toward “transitional” furnishings. That is to say, they’re neither traditional nor strictly “hard” contemporary (glass, chrome, metal tubing). Rather, there is more wood, more fine lines, both in natural-finish and painted styles. Hershberger notes that the old days of furniture “suites” are gone, in favor of personalized, eclectic mixes in which customers express their own tastes and personalities. Once-typical big-grain oak furniture in traditional styles—while still here for those who love it—no longer dominates.

These have been replaced by the more modern and more personalized, including state48

ments such as the Live Edge creations. Eclectic is big, as customers and designers look to mix and match interesting pieces. This is easier to do with more complementary transitional hardwood styles characterized by crisp, refined lines.

Another example of modern style is the use of sophisticated color treatments, such as black with silver highlights, dark grays and dark earth tones. Cool colors are “in.” Grays of all kinds— Homestead has as many as 20 different gray finishes— continue to be popular.

Updated styling also means taking the traditional and tweaking it. Finely detailed distressing, for instance, is a sophisticated effect that works well on clean-lined furniture. Details include multiple stains and colors, gold and silver highlights, and sheens.

out there, what’s exciting, and give people what they want,” Monroe says.

He also sees an increasing shift to clean lines and transitional looks that are neither traditional nor modern—fewer heavy moldings, a more refined, classic style.

Cabinetry as furniture is part of this creative trend. Anything can be made as a stand-alone piece, like a kitchen island with bun feet, an entryway or kitchen hutch, or a vanity in a powder room or master bath—very popular right now.

Also modern and transitional is the mixing of tones in a kitchen: contrasting an island with perimeter cabinets, such as a recent glazed white kitchen with a dark island. Monroe says that people are more adventurous now.

Design lovers are online, researching Houzz or HGTV—they see things and get ideas. There is an enlarged visual environment for developing one’s own style.

“In the old days,” he notes, “you chose from six cabinets, three woods, five doors. Now people want to do their own thing. It’s a lot more fun than it used to be, to see the changes!”

Door styles tend to have less framing these days, a lighter look, with “very fine moldings, light colors, grays, whites and off whites with gray glazes.

Finer grained woods. Beautiful grays are in, including warm grays. Warmth always lasts. White kitchens. White and black never go out of style.”

Monroe says that blues, blueish greens and cool tones are also trending. “We do a lot of blues in places like laundry rooms. Feel better about doing the laundry,” Monroe says.

Painted cabinets can be used in very modern as well as transitional styles.

Mullet recently concluded a new Northeast Ohio kitchen that was “high gloss, no visible grains, very slick, and with a use of chrome. Cleaner lines than the customer had had before— less clutter.” This is a trend, too, with baby boomers looking to simplify and often seeking a sleeker, more modern style.

Get Up and Get Outside in Amish Country

Amish Country is perfect for those who want to get closer to the land. Its rolling hills, natural features and stunning views have inspired plenty of outdoor recreation and fun.

Family outings can include camping, farm visits, hayrides, bike trips and more. Try the Wilderness Center in Wilmot, protecting 619 acres of forest, prairie, and wetland, with 10 miles of walking trails meandering through it. Hikers can visit Wilderness Lake, climb an observation tower or walk the banks of a small creek.

As the first trail in the nation to accommodate Amish buggies, the unique Holmes County Trail is a greenway winding north to south, with 15 miles of trail now open through rolling fields, woodlands and protected swamp areas, including observation decks for beautiful views. One lane is paved with asphalt for biking, roller-blading, walking, running, and wheelchairs, while the adjoining buggy and equestrian trail is paved with “chip and seal” for horse-drawn vehicles and horseback riding. Trail Etiquette: Buggies and horseback riders yield to all other users, while cyclists yield to hikers and walkers.

The Mohican Valley Trail to the west is a multi-use rail-to-trail that lets you experience the sights and songs of indigo buntings, orioles and rose-breasted grosbeaks. The Bridge of Dreams—longest covered bridge in Ohio—provides beautiful views of the Mohican River valley. The 1,110-acre Mohican State Park and the adjacent 4,525-acre state forest offer hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking and lodging.

If keeping both feet on the ground seems old hat to you, try zipping through a wonderland of tree canopy instead. At Tree Frog Canopy Tours in Mohican Valley, you can experience Ohio’s longest, fastest and highest zipline tour. Soar through the treetops via seven ziplines, two suspended bridges and two rappels. Get out and see the sights!

“You’re never going to find the perfect floor plan,” says Burianek. His wife had discovered a floor plan online that showed a front elevation that they loved—the one they ended up with in fact—however, the rest of the design wasn’t quite right. “I had all of these extra blueprints at my office. I took a pair of scissors one Friday night and just started cutting sections from houses I’ve done in the past.” Burianek kept tweaking the plan, adding pieces here and there until it started to look like their future home.

and high, airy ceilings, each detail of his home was well-thought-out and planned to perfection. The floors, for example, are all Amish custom-made hardwood floors. “We did a hard maple floor with a handscraped finish,” he says.

The home is also quite tech-savvy, something that Burianek’s 8 ½ yearold-twins are very talented with. “We have this system in the house where it’s Android or iPhone compatible. I can control my thermostat, I can shut lights off, I can turn lights on if I’m coming home,” he says.

This system also provides a lot of assistance on the safety front. “It’s also my security system, it’s my fire and police and all of those things.”

The furnace itself has an interesting feature.

“I have a device inside my furnace that is an ultraviolet light filter that, if there’s any moisture left in the plenum in the furnace, it evaporates it, so there’s no bacteria that builds up in the furnace.” Because his home is so air-tight, Burianek has to bring fresh air in.

To help with that, he has a system called an ERV unit. This system preheats the air before it goes to the furnace, or precools it if the air conditioning is being used. It also filters the air, killing 99.2 percent of all germs and bacteria in the air, according to Burianek.

His home has even received an award for being so well insulated and energy efficient.

The mortgage and construction industries use a nationally recognized scale—the Home Energy Rating System, or HERS—to determine how energy efficient new and existing homes are. A score of 70 on the HERS scale earns the home a five-star-plus rating. All of the homes that Burianek builds score well below 70, a great feat. However his own home scored an impressive 44.

“It used to be that everyone had to have a formal dining room,” says Burianek.

Unused in many households, the dinning room has fallen to the wayside.

“It’s probably 60/40, with 60 percent of people saying ‘we don’t want a formal dining room.’” The extra space can be transformed into a study or eliminated entirely, with an enlarged kitchen compensating as the new dinning space.

“We’re designing the house where their kitchen area is now becoming a lot larger, and they’re putting in large tables because that’s where everybody’s congregating.”

Small details are also being integrated into custom builds. Features like dog baths and shower units, as well as animal pens hidden in plain sight—built into kitchen cabinetry—are all gaining popularity.

Short’s Brewing Company Michigan brewery gets distribution in Ohio One of the Midwest’s most cherished and respected breweries finally makes its way to Ohio this month with the arrival of Short’s Brewing Company.

Brewer Joe Short had an idea: create a brewery in his namesake in his home state of Michigan. He already had the location picked out: a 120-yearold hardware store in Bellaire. How hard could it be, right? What began as a $30,000 venture turned into 18 months and $180,000 of construction. But in the late spring of 2004, Short’s Brewing Company tapped its first keg.

As with most breweries, things started off slow, then blossomed over the next few years. In January 2008, Short’s purchased an old manufacturing building in Elk Rapids, Mich. In a year’s time, he was able to get the location up and running. Amazingly, when the first batch of beer was shipped two months later, every bottle was labeled by hand.

Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery 389 East Fourth Street, Sonoma, Calif.

The idea for Sebastiani Vineyards started when Samuele Sebastiani, a stonemason by trade, emigrated from the Tuscany region of Italy to California.

Sebastiani mined the Sonoma hills for cobblestones that were used in the construction of San Francisco’s streets. He saved his money and bought land in Sonoma County to start his winery in 1904.

Sebastiani Winery & Vineyards is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza. In the beginning, the winery made wine for the people of Sonoma and its restaurants. When Prohibition hit, this winery continued to operate, making sacramental and medicinal wines. The joke was how many people became religious in this period.

With over a century of winemaking in Sonoma County, the winery focuses on crafting premium wines. Their current winemaker, Mark Lyon, has been at Sebastiani for over 40 years. Under his direction, Sebastiani has been making quality wines from sub-appellations—regions within an AVA that possess distinct microclimates or terrains that give grapes grown there recognizable characteristics—like Alexander Valley, Carneros, Russian River and individual lots in Sonoma County like their Cherryblock vineyards. In 2008, Bill Foley purchased Sebastiani and began taking steps to enhance wine quality.

Foley and Lyon worked together to buy new winemaking equipment and barrels, lower their yields, and purchase additional vineyards to guarantee superior fruit. If you are around the city of Sonoma, stop at their tasting room; the winery is not far from the square.

The winemaker notes that the 2013 Sonoma County Cabernet is dark ruby in color with enchanting aromatics ranging from blackberry to mild cassis that interplay with hints of coconut and mild leafiness.

The flavors are bold and ripe, including black fruits

on first attack followed by layers of coconut and a vanilla finish due to oak barrel aging. This mediumbodied wine is richer and more structured than the 2012. This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with broiled or grilled steak, pasta in tomato sauce, and broiled or grilled lamb chops. It retails for $24.99.

The 2013 Sonoma County Chardonnay has a rich gold color with beautiful aromas of lemon curd, modest yellow apple and caramelized vanilla, according to the winemaker. It’s a medium bodied wine that rests nicely on the palate, exudes flavors of bright apple and butterscotch, and finishes with round notes of toasted oak from the barrel fermentation. The winemaker also calls it “a nice wine that is perfectly balanced between bright citrus fruits and oak flavors.” This Chardonnay complements chicken roasted with herbs, lobster with drawn butter, oysters on the half shell, pasta with cream sauce, broiled or grilled salmon, scallops, mussels, and shrimp in garlic butter. It retails for $19.99.

For the 2012 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red, the winemaker notes intense aromas of dried olives and blackberries, with underlying hints of mineral and espresso. Powerful, dusty Cab flavors with concentrated fruit flavors make this a very dark wine, with lots of fruit on the nose and the palate, but also very present tannins. With fruit sourced from the iconic Cherryblock vineyard, this fantastic blend is sure to become one of your new favorites. The winemaker strongly recommends “staying ahead of the curve and securing a case or two, before the rest of the world catches on.” This blend pairs well with hearty cheeses, broiled or grilled lamb chops, pasta in tomato sauce, pizza or steaks. It retails for $35.99.

Akron Go Red For Women Luncheon Tuesday, May 10, 2016 This year, the American Heart Association will celebrate women’s heart and brain health in a new location. Doors at Todaro’s Party Center will open at 11 a.m. with local exhibitors and networking. The luncheon begins at noon at the venue, located at 1820 Akron Peninsula Road in Akron.

Chaired by Kim Haws Falasco of Robert W. Baird & Co., tickets are $100 per person, a portion of which is tax deductible. This year’s emcee is Betsy Kling, Chief Meteorologist at WKYC TV-3. Funds from the Go Red For Women Luncheon will ensure that more people in the Akron area, and across the country, have access to heart and stroke education and that lifesaving research continues to be funded.

CHEST DISCOMFORT Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

DISCOMFORT IN OTHER AREAS OF THE UPPER BODY Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

Stroke

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

FACE DROOPING Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

SUDDEN LOSS OF RESPONSIVENESS No response to tapping on shoulders.

ARM WEAKNESS Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms.

Does one arm drift downward?

NO NORMAL BREATHING The victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five seconds.

SPEECH DIFFICULTY Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

SHORTNESS OF BREATH This can occur with or without chest discomfort.

TIME TO CALL 9-1-1 If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately.

OTHER SIGNS These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Discovering the New You through Post-Weight-Loss Body Contouring Surgery

For those who have ever struggled with their weight, losing a few pounds can be a major achievement, resulting in a more positive body image. More significant weight loss, in excess of 100 pounds, can have dramatic health benefits, along with some less desirable consequences.

Whether the weight was shed through diet and exercise or with weight-loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, there are some parts of the body where extra skin can remain. Good nutrition and a regular exercise regimen can melt away fat and tone muscles, but neither will help the skin shrink back to “fit.”

This is where post-weight-loss body contouring surgery can help. Plastic surgeons can take away that excess skin and reposition it into the right place for a more desirable contour. This can be done in a number of different areas, including the abdomen, breasts, face, thighs and upper arms.

The most common area for this procedure is the abdomen. Many refer to this as a “tummy tuck.” If a patient has a high degree of excess skin hanging onto the thighs and suffers from chronic skin irritation, sometimes insurance will cover the removal of that excess skin. For consideration, one would need to provide photographs and explain the situation to the insurance company to find out if it would be covered. before

The breasts are the second most requested area. With obesity, the breasts of women and men can be extra large.

After significant weight loss, they become deflated and droopy. With women, a breast lift can be done; whereas, with men, the procedure is more like a mastectomy or removal of the breast.

Most of the time, these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. As long as the surgery takes less than six hours and blood loss is minimized, it’s possible to combine procedures for multiple areas.

Overall health and fitness level also determine the number of areas that can be addressed at once.

Recovery usually takes about a month.

During this time, you should refrain from vigorous exercise, yard work and heavyduty housework. Otherwise, the day after surgery, you should be able to walk, go up and down stairs, and perform light housekeeping. How quickly you return to work depends on how physically demanding your job is. If you work primarily at a desk, you can get back more quickly than someone who’s on their feet most of the day like a nurse or a factory laborer.
