Trip Planner Camping is about more than gear.

I’m an avid backpacker, and I have fallen down the high-tech camping gear rabbit hole. It all started when they introduced the breathable, waterproof Gore-Tex fabric for skiing and camping. I was sold on the idea, but the jacket cost more than $200 in the ’80s and ’90s. The price never really dropped either.

My first time backpacking I thought I needed all this stuff to have the best experience. I had to have the special stove and sleeping bag and all the options for the weather. It never failed that Backpacker Magazine would come out with a musthave device that I would want to get. I thought gear would make it easier. I wish they made a gadget to carry me up the mountain — that I would buy. Now don’t get me wrong, I have been in snowstorms in August and that down jacket and sleeping bag made a huge difference.

And having a fresh cup of coffee in the morning from a coffee press is nice. But there comes a point when Mother Nature gets the best of you. I have been on trips where it rained for a week, and there isn’t anything that is going to keep you dry.

Today I buy very little gear for camping.

Every now and then something breaks or wears out and I buy replacements, but at this point I have two plastic tubs full of stuff in my basement, and none of it caused me to have that much better of a time than if I didn’t have it.

The reality is that you don’t need all this stuff to have a great time camping. My best moments camping were never me thinking, Thank God I have Gore-Tex or a solar panel to keep my phone charged.

It’s usually the views and the people you are with that you remember most, like when you leave your tent in the middle of the night to see an explosion of stars in the sky. Without the city light pollution, you can see the Milky Way of stars, which brightens the sky and the mountains in the background. Another favorite camp activity is throwing a small Nerf football around, which provides hours of entertainment that seems to never get old.

So, whether you want to spend big dollars on a Yeti cooler or use the cheap Styrofoam one, don’t let gear stop you from getting out this year to enjoy some of the camping spots highlighted on pg.

THEN & NOW: POP-UP ART May 2003: “TULIPS” sprung up around Akron in 2003. Akron artist J. Scott Matthews launched the “Temporary Unauthorized Large Installation Project” that year, turning abandoned Akron locations into art. Akron Life’s 2003 article by Kim Carpenter features photos of Matthews’ work, including red paint in increasing amounts on poles forming an illusion at an abandoned supermarket at Exchange and Market streets. As he was painting the poles, police questioned him on what he was doing at the property, and when he explained he was making art, they let him off the hook. He poked fun at the encounter by calling his exhibit of photographs of the art “2909.06A1,” which is the police code for willful destruction of property.

Summer 2022: Quaker Square, the former Quaker Oats factory, has been iconic in Akron for decades. It has been a hotel, shopping and dining complex and University of Akron residence hall.

Now, Curated Storefront is activating the space as pop-up art galleries as part of the Front International public art festival featuring exhibits around Northeast Ohio, including Akron from July 16 to Oct. 2. Look for art in the first-floor galleries as well as in suites on the second floor that were formerly a comic bookstore and train display rooms. The New York Times called Front “an artistic scavenger hunt with civic pride.” The theme this summer is inspired by a line from a Langston Hughes poem, “Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows,” and focuses on how art can be an agent of transformation, healing and joy. curatedstorefront.org

The world awakened after George Floyd was killed by police. Black Akron choreographer and father Dominic MooreDunson had many questions afterward, and launched a podcast, “inCopNegro,” in April as part of his dance-theater project that explores safety in respect to police relations and parenthood in Black communities in America. The episodes feature raw interviews with Black police officers, community members and city officials, including Akron pastor and football coach Kemp Boyd. He discusses four encounters his players had with gun violence in just one month. My favorite thing to do at camp was horseback riding. Being a kid, camp felt like one grand adventure, and even small moments were so exciting that they stuck with you. Wading in the river, doing an obstacle course and swinging on a rope tied to a tree all play like small movies in my mind. And now, I realize it didn’t really matter what we did. It mattered that we had that time together.

As I got older, my now husband, Tony, became my camping partner. We’ve stayed at a Hocking Hills A-frame cabin as the vibrant leaves were dropping in the fall and at a fabulous glamping yurt with majestic animals we could hear at night at the Wilds, which is featured on pg. 28. I’m looking forward to one day taking our little girl on these trips, and I hope she will have a special bonding experience with her dad in nature as I did with mine.

The Akron Police Department Wants YOU to Join the Force Akron’s men and women in uniform are on a mission: to find and recruit 50 new cadets for the police force.

Sgt. Michael Murphy heads up the recruitment task force and has been with the Akron Police Department for 15 years. “Becoming a police officer was never in my plan,” he says. “I went to the University of Dayton to play football, came back home and started working at Sterling Jewelers, trying to figure out what my path was going to be.” He grew up in West Akron and went to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, graduating a year ahead of LeBron James. After returning from Dayton, he debated going back to complete his degree at The University of Akron. But fate stepped in, and he joined Akron Police.

His primary responsibility is to supervise the other patrol officers. “I sign off on the paperwork and conduct use of force investigations, so anytime an officer may have to tase someone, tackle or punch them,” he says.

Detective Dawn Forney took a different route than many of her peers after graduating from The University of Akron with a communications degree.

She worked in the dispatch room and joined the force because she wanted to go on calls and help people.

Forney is now a 27-year veteran of Akron Police, mainly working as a patrol officer, but she became a detective four years ago. “It’s an exciting job.

You get away from being behind a computer, and you’re going to experience things that most people aren’t going to get to experience,” she says. “The camaraderie — that’s a big thing too.”

Officer Jeff Ludle and Forney graduated from the academy together in 1995. Ludle’s first day on the job was Christmas Day of that year. He says the job has changed today because of the evolving role of technology.

“The job is different now with all the eyes,” he says. “Bodycam video is stored in the cloud, and we face situations where we need technology. When you hit your taser, the camera comes on. When you hit the siren in the car, you might not be thinking of turning your camera on.”

Ludle has been driving the patrol van, transporting prisoners to the jail most of his career. He says that the department only runs one transport van per shift to help free up the arresting officers to finish their paperwork. He also trains rookies to operate the patrol van as part of their 13-week field training.

“Once the rookies start getting toward the end of their probation, they come with me so they can learn how to work the wagon because it is a little different than the cruiser,” he says.

Officer Damber Subba started with Akron Police in 2018 after being a translator for the city of Akron to help communicate with the NepaliBhutanese community in North Hill.

Subba says he acts as a sort of “cultural broker” for the Akron Police, primarily when they work with Nepali-Bhutanese immigrants. “I can relate to their

struggle,” he says. “Many fear the police because we didn’t trust the Army in Nepal’s refugee camps.”

These exemplary officers stress that the Akron Police is a great opportunity that’s better than many other municipalities because you are paid the minute you enter the police academy. Officers come from all backgrounds, ethnicities and genders.

Akron Police has more than 425 police officers on the job, working in 20 departments, so there’s room to grow into many roles. While it is not the largest metropolitan police force, it is considered a midsized force with one of the country’s top internally-run police academies.

Murphy and his team are looking for at least 1,000 recruits to take the written exam by July 7 and 8 to qualify 50 cadets. The academy will be split into two classes of 25 starting this fall. Akron Police encourages veterans, women and minorities from 21 to 40 to apply.

“The police force is like a big family,” Murphy says. “It begins at the police academy. Those are people you end up spending the next 20 to 30 years with. You build those friendships in the police academy, which carries throughout your career.”

“You get nice views out over the tree field, and people are fascinated by that,” says coowner George Haramis.

Keep an eye out for wildlife like deer and birds, and enjoy sunrise and sunset views from your site. Six of the sites are directly on the farm’s property line, which borders Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and you are near a creek, grassy hillside and maple, oak, buckeye, walnut and cherry trees.

“It’s surprising if you don’t see at least a deer while you’re out here,” he says. “We have hawks overhead. Once in a while, you’ll see an eagle come by.”

That proximity to the national park excites many campers, he says, and there is nearby access to Summit Metro Parks trails and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, all within less than half a mile. Haramis says campers come from out of the area and even from throughout the country.

Splash Pad The lakeside glamping tents at Clay’s Resort add a bit of luxury to camping and eliminate the stress of roughing it by cramming a whole family in a tent.

These striking structures at the North Lawrence, Ohio, camp resort have orange-andwhite-striped canvas over a metal frame that’s on a raised wooden deck. They sleep up to five and include a hammock, a picnic table, a grill, electricity and bunk beds, a queen-size bed and a front porch, all crafted by local Amish.

“People love them,” says marketing associate Britani Eaton.

“They love being able to be outside, not trapped in a hotel room, being able to have all the attractions.”

Those attractions can make a jam-packed amusing day for the kids, as the camp features a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a mini golf course, a scavenger hunt and gem mining — and then there’s the lake. On the lake, kids can climb and jump off inflatable playsets, ride zip lines, go down water slides, rent canoes and kayaks and more.

“We also have a splash pad for the younger kids,” Eaton says.

“We have all that fun stuff.”

If you’d rather spend some downtime at the campsite, you can step out onto the front porch and enjoy the fishing lake from there. “It’s in a quiet area of the park. … You can just look over the lake,” Eaton says, adding that people can catch bass, bluegill and crappies.

The park also offers lodges, RV sites, tent camping sites and cabins. “We have more rustic cabins, and then we have more of the deluxe cabins with full showers and kitchens,” Eaton says.

No matter where you decide to stay at Clay’s, you can experience a mini vacation that’s both relaxing and exciting for the kids. And glamping tents offer a happy medium.

“People — looking to get away and not do the rustic tent life, be able to sleep in a bed — still get fresh air,” Eaton says.

Presque Isle State Park

Front Row Site Sara’s Campground in Erie, Pennsylvania, offers a special kind of zen that can be hard to find.

“There’s not too many places where you can camp on a major body of water,” says co-owner Annie Candela. “There’s a quiet peacefulness. You hear the waves in the morning.”

Located at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park, campers can pitch tents right in the sand on Sara’s stretch of Lake Erie beach. Candela has camped on the beach and loves the mesmerizing sunsets and cool lake breezes.

“It’s magnificent,” she says.

The sites are for tents smaller than 14 by 10 feet, and they have access to electricity, picnic tables and fire pits. The campground also has bayside spots across the road for RVs, and any camper can use the water for swimming, floating in a raft or even kayaking.

The beach campsites are hot commodities, as they are first come, first serve only, so Candela recommends going Sundays through Wednesdays or after Labor Day through Halloween. There is plenty to

keep campers busy on-site with events like movies on the beach, craft fairs and special holiday celebrations such as Christmas in July.

Plus, campers can nosh at an on-site ice cream shop, pizza place and diner.

But the main attraction is the neighboring 3,200-acre Presque Isle State Park.

It’s on a peninsula, has 11 beaches with powdery sand and sparkling green-blue water and was named the best freshwater beach by USA Today. Most people like the bustling beach 11, but the kite-flying beach 10 is a serene change of pace. Biking, hiking or fishing are great ways to get close to nature, including summer wildflowers and migrating shorebirds.

Once campers are tuckered out, they can chill on the campground beach as the sky turns brilliant pinks and purples and drift away.

The Wilds

On Safari Staying at the Wilds means watching birds, Asian Greater Onehorned rhinos, Bactrian camels and Pere David’s Deer wake as you do.

“You start to hear the birds.

First, it’s robins. [Then] we call it the dawn chorus — all the birds singing,” says Jan Ramer, senior vice president of animal care and conservation for Columbus Zoo and the Wilds.

“You’ll see rhinos get up, shake themselves off and munch on grass. Everything wakes up, stretches and gets on with their day. It’s fun to be a part of it.”

One of North America’s largest animal conservation facilities is nestled in Cumberland, Ohio, on nearly 10,000 acres of land that’s been restored from being a surface coal mine to grasslands, wetlands and forest where 27 species, some rare and endangered, roam open habitats.

Surround yourself with luxury at one of 12 glamping yurts at Nomad Ridge, which are canvas tents with bamboo floors, climate control, Wi-Fi and private decks to view the animals or stargaze, as there is little light pollution.

“At night, sometimes you hear owls and frequently trumpeter swans fly over doing their characteristic trumpeter call,” Ramer says.

Breakfast and dinner at a restaurant overlooking the pasture and a safari come with your stay. For the latter, an open-air

“You can watch the rhinos feet from the bus,” she says.

Scimitar-horned oryx were extinct in North Africa until 2016 when the Wilds worked with other organizations to breed and send three oryx to run free in Chad. They’ve also reintroduced Eastern hellbender salamanders and once-endangered American burying beetles.

And since the habitats are so vast, the animals behave like they do in the wild. A Chinese scientist even came to study the Sichuan takins at the Wilds, which is one of the largest herds in North America.

Kids can learn about conservation through summer camps, and there are plenty of fun activities like zip lining and horseback riding. You can also stay in a lodge, cabin or tents at the newer Outpost area, which Ramer did and says provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Hocking Hills State Park

Starry Night Look out a wall of floor-to-ceiling plastic windows at a sky of stars from the geodomes at the Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls for magnificent views of Hocking Hills State Park, which borders it on three sides.

“When you walk inside, they’re very luxurious,” Rapposelli says.

“You feel like you’re right in the woods,” says assistant general manager Amy Rapposelli.

“I like spring the best because the wildflowers, the birds are back, the waterfalls are flowing really well,” she says.

“But by far our most popular time of the year is the fall when the leaves are changing.

People want to come for that to see all the pretty views.”

And it isn’t just natural sights that people enjoy. The geometric canvas structures in Logan, Ohio, also bring you close to the sounds of nature — birds chirping, deer walking, rain falling — while remaining safe and waterproof. People have even told Rapposelli that they enjoy it when it rains during their trips.

“It’s a very peaceful sound,” she says. “It’s just a little pitter-patter on the canvas.”

Despite being in a canvas structure in the woods, you don’t feel like you’re staying in a tent. The domed, 14-foot-tall structures are raised and are outfitted with deluxe amenities that keep you comfortable including a kitchenette, a gas stove, a tiled shower, a king-size bed and more.

These geodomes are some of the only ones in the country that have heating, air conditioning and plumbing inside, and they stay warm in outdoor temperatures down to minus 30 degrees, so you can rent them year-round. Each season provides a unique sense of tranquility.

The 75-acre property also offers yurts, cabins and cottages, and a restaurant and spa. Some of the most popular Hocking Hills State Park hiking spots, like Old Man’s Cave and Ash Cave, are less than a 10-minute drive away, and you can get to the Cedar Falls trail in just a minute or two. But some people like to spend time just taking in nature from their geodome.

Point Pelee National Park

The very tip of the peninsula at Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, provides a surreal sight.

It ends with a sand spit, which is a sliver of land constantly being shifted

by Lake Erie currents and one of only three in Canada, and you can see waves crashing into each other from opposite directions.

“You’ll have currents along the east shore and the west shore.

At the tip, they meet,” says visitor experience manager Monique Oltrop. “Knowing you’re at the very southernmost point of mainland Canada, it’s a magical feeling. All you can see is water everywhere.”

As of 2020, the point can be seen from an 80-foot observation tower or by walking on the sand when conditions allow. But entering the water is too dangerous at the tip.

It’s the park’s namesake, but there are so many other unique aspects that make it worth a trip. The park has 24 year-round oTentiks, which are permanent tent-like structures that are heated and have beds, tables and porches with Adirondack chairs. Staying in one puts you in the middle of the Carolinian forest and all its wildlife.

“In the spring and summertime, you can hear the frogs croaking in the nearby marsh,” Oltrop says.

Special Effects While Point Pelee is one of the smallest Parks Canada locations, it is the country’s most ecologically diverse park. It is home to 390-plus species of birds and is renowned as one of the best spots in inland North America to see the migration of songbirds and warblers. That happens in the spring and fall, and you can also see migrating monarchs in the fall. The park is home to different habitats, including a marsh that covers about 72 percent of it.

Walk the marsh’s boardwalk or rent a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard to see beavers, fish and rare turtles. Afterward, kick back along the over 9 miles of sandy beaches, including the popular Northwest Beach. “There’s very little artificial light at night here,” says Oltrop. “It is very quiet and still, a very dark environment. You can really connect with the sights and sounds of nature.”

Fresh Approach Eat healthy during summer with these tips.

Our summer social calendars are often filled with cookouts, weddings, birthday parties and festivals. And food served at those events is often fried, drenched in sauce or packaged, so sticking to a healthy diet becomes a struggle.

Abigail Czekaj, a registered dietician at Celebrate Vitamins in Wadsworth, won the national Registered Dietician Nutritionist Day contest this year, and her winning entry offers great advice on maintaining a healthy diet by making small, attainable changes.

“I think of it as, What can I add to make my lifestyle more nutritious, healthier?” she says.

She gives the example of someone who doesn’t eat breakfast. Instead of recommending they prep a huge meal for the week, they can grab a yogurt cup and some fruit or fry an egg to have with whole-grain toast.

This also means you don’t have to skip meaningful family dishes.

Czekaj is Polish and Czech, so her family has a white sausage borscht soup made from her grandma’s recipe at Easter. She partakes in a bowl but eats a salad and other healthier sides.

It can be easier if nutritious options are on the table, so Czekaj recommends bringing a healthy dish to cookouts, like a veggie platter, roasted Brussel sprouts with an aioli and grilled shrimp or chicken skewers.

Using these tips can help curb snacking. “If I eat a good breakfast that’s very balanced,” she says, “I’m less likely to eat between breakfast and lunch.”

When hunger strikes, snack on filling options by matching a carbohydrate with a protein, like fruit and peanut butter.

For drinks, the tactic is the opposite. Colorless is often better than a sugary cocktail or a dark calorie-dense beer, and having one or two is OK.

“Setting yourself up for success is the key,” Czekaj says.

“Go in with a plan so that you’re having your vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates at your meals.”

It all comes back to making small healthy choices that add up to a more nutritious diet to boost your well-being.

ORZO PASTA SALAD

SPINACH AND FETA TURKEY BURGERS

Makes 10-12 servings | Total time: 25 minutes

Makes 8 | Total time: 35 minutes

Salad ingredients • 1 pound orzo, cooked and drained • 3 cups spinach, chopped • 1 English cucumber, diced small • 4-5 green onions, sliced • 1 cup fresh peas • 1 bunch asparagus, roasted or blanched, cut into small pieces • 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped Dressing Ingredients • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 1 garlic clove, grated or pressed • 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon honey • ¼ cup olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions 1. In a small mixing bowl, mix together all ingredients for dressing. Whisk until well combined, set aside.

2. In a large bowl, add all ingredients for salad.

Toss to combine.

3. Pour half of the dressing over and stir to combine.

Add more dressing as needed to taste when serving.

Ingredients • 2 pounds extra lean ground turkey • ½ cup breadcrumbs • 2 large eggs • 2 cloves garlic, minced fine or grated • ½ cup crumbled feta • 1 10-ounce box frozen spinach, thawed and drained • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon ground pepper • Lettuce or whole-wheat bun, tomato, onion and condiments as desired

Instructions 1. Remove frozen spinach from package, squeeze out moisture until it is very dry.

Roughly chop and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients until fully combined.

3. Form into eight 4-ounce patties. Transfer to fridge and set for at least 30 minutes.

4. Heat a grill on high heat for 10 minutes.

5. Transfer patties to grill and cook for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until firm and cooked through.

6. Serve on a whole-wheat bun or in a lettuce wrap with toppings and condiments of choice.

June is Ohio wine month, so celebrate at a local winery. Maize Valley Winery has been around since the ’60s. It also makes craft beer and features a market, a cafe with a patio and a 750-acre farm. With events like live music on Saturdays and classic car cruise-ins on Thursdays in summer and fall, it’s a great spot to spend an evening with family.

Maize Valley makes wine from fresh, Ohio-grown ingredients. It focuses on growing grapes that can survive Northeast Ohio weather, primarily FrenchAmerican hybrids that produce award-winning wines. With cute, quirky names, here are fun topsellers and a new offering.

REDNECK RED Maize Valley’s first wine, which remains its bestseller, Redneck Red ($9.99) is made from Concord grapes, which were first grown in Concord, Massachusetts. The Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt is the oldest Concord grape-growing region in the world, with roughly 30,000 acres of vineyards. Upon the first sip, the sweet, fruity character pops, reminiscent of the Concord grape jelly you enjoyed as a kid.

HANKY PANKY With a label of two goats frolicking in a pasture, this sweet blush wine ($9.99) is loaded with flavors of Catawba grapes. That was the most widely planted grape variety in the country in the mid-19th century. Catawba grapes are grown on Maize Valley’s farm and throughout the Midwest. Taste it at your next barbecue or picnic.

MAD COW There’s a lot of history behind the name and label of the Mad Cow sweet white wine. In the early years, Maize Valley was in the dairy farming industry and owned many cows. The label is a picture of a cow, Edith, who

produced over 100,000 gallons of milk during her time on the farm. Mad Cow ($9.99) is made from Niagara grapes, the backbone of white grape juice produced in the U.S. This light wine has natural grape flavors and a sweet finish.

APPLE PIE Made from 100 percent Ohiogrown apples — and no grapes — this wine ($9.99) is like grandma’s apple pie in a glass.

The sweetness comes from real spices and no syrups or flavorings. Enjoy it at room temperature, slightly chilled or gently warmed on the stove. Either way, it’s good with soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert.

SANGRIA Adding more fun to its portfolio, Maize Valley introduces sangria ($10.99). Made from Concord grapes at 10.5 percent alcohol by volume and 5 percent residual sugar, it is a sweet red wine with traditional flavors and aromas. Massillon residents are people with incredible pride, says architect John Patrick Picard. But the city of about 32,000 people lacked a large outdoor downtown venue where its residents could gather.

For years, outdoor events were often held on Lincoln Way, which had to be shut down and was hot, crowded and loud. And the nearby Duncan Plaza was in disrepair due to its 50-year age. Plus, its stage was small, the audience faced the sun, seating was uncomfortable and the spot wasn’t accessible for those with disabilities.

Mayor Kathy CatazaroPerry got taxpayer money and $1.2 million from Ohio and local foundation grants to hire Picard’s firm to do a $1.394 million makeover and make Duncan Plaza welcoming to all residents of the City of Champions.

Downtown Massillon undergoes a renaissance and gains an event space.

“We called it the renaissance of Duncan Plaza. It spreads everybody out, gives everybody a place to sit,” says Picard.

His firm focused on maximizing the plaza’s capacity for city concerts, rallies for the beloved Massillon Tigers high school football team and more. The plaza is now 40,000 square feet, with room for up to 1,200 people to set up lawn chairs in front of the stage and picnic tables that sit 30 to 40 people. The main design element is serpentine walls topped with seats for 200 to 300 people. Picard used curves instead of sharp edges for a more organic design that pays tribute to Massillon’s history.

“Historically, there was a mill on the site and there was a river that went to the site, so we kind of picked up on the natural flow of the river,” Picard says.

The stage also mimics nature with columns that look like trees holding up the curved roof. There is improved tech for bands, including a speaker system, power sources and microphones.

In addition, the whole plaza is accessible with sloped concrete that connects to surrounding areas such as First Street where event vendors can set up and 1,000 more people can be accommodated.

Many aspects of the design are sustainable, including bollard lights, which light the walkways and are 100 percent solar-powered.

“Everything is natural materials.

Concrete is a very green material,” Picard says. “It’s an environmentally friendly space, as it should be. It’s a park.”

Green spaces include purple hydrangeas, orange and yellow daylilies and myrtle evergreen ground cover, which stays green year-round and has purple flowers. The plaza is dotted with thornless honey locust trees, which have featherlike leaves 46

that offer shade but also allow visibility for shows. Plus, they planted two Fraser fir trees so the city doesn’t have to cut down a Christmas tree each year.

The new plaza opened last summer, with a successful concert series, which returns this summer on Thursdays June 23 to Aug. 18. It’s a part of the city’s greater renaissance and complements other improvements like streetscapes on downtown sections of Lincoln Way, which got new sidewalks, streetlights, accessible curb ramps, landscaping and more through the ongoing Imagine Massillon project.

Downtown finally has a large outdoor gathering place featuring a stage that sits on large letters spelling out Massillon, creating a sense of community.

“It’s a destination now,” Picard says. “It gives people of Massillon something more to be proud of.”

Everyone needs books in their life. Around 1946, Akron Public Library launched the bookmobile to visit school districts and rural areas where there was limited access to libraries. The mobile service reached people living in housing centers, detention centers, the Jewish center, a home for unwed mothers and union headquarters. At first, the bookmobile was a truck with books packed on shelves lining the sides and on a back alcove, and anyone could grab a title that piqued their interest. In the summer, the bookmobile frequently parked at summer camps like Camp Y-Noah in Clinton, shown here. Today, the library offers four types of mobile services including two buses, a box truck and express delivery services.

These libraries on wheels reach about 1,000 bookworms a month.
