Off Duty It’s a process adapting to life without a pet.

This is the first time in my entire adult life that I haven’t had a pet.

Last year our Brussels Griffon doggy we loved so much died of cancer. We babied that dog so much that I believe she really thought she was royalty. I had more pictures of her on my phone than of my kids.

We did everything we could after we found out she had cancer, but in the end, we had to put her down. She was miserable, and no one wanted to see her suffer.

My counter in our pantry is starting to collect quite a few containers of ashes. My wife always wants our pets to be cremated, and we are starting to have quite a collection.

I’m not sure what to do with all these ashes.

I highly doubt these containers get passed down from generation to generation. I’m sure the right thing to do is spread the ashes somewhere. Unfortunately for our dog, she was inside most of her life, so her favorite places are not good spots to spread ashes.

It took me a while to get over waking up and having the feeling that I need to feed and walk her. I miss being woken up by scratching on the side of the bed or a bark, telling me I have slept too late. What I miss most is how she stood at the top of the stairs when I got home from work, the door cracked, and her tail wagging, so excited I was home. That always brought so much joy to my day.

Having a pet is a big responsibility. It’s like having a furry, four-legged child that never grows up. And just like kids, pets have a knack for making you feel guilty when you’re not around. They scratch, bark and

meow until you give in and spend some quality time with them. But despite all the hair, mess and occasional smell, we wouldn’t trade our furry friends for the world.

I do have to say I am enjoying the break for now.

Here are some positives of being without a pet.

For starters, going on vacation is a breeze — no more worrying about finding a kennel or pet sitter you trust, or trying to convince your furry friend that they’re going to have a great time without you. And let’s not forget about the freedom from pet hair. You don’t have to have seemingly endless lint-rolling sessions to remove said dog hair from your clothes, and there are no more awkward moments when you realize you’re covered in dog hair in public.

I thought I would like a long break from pets because raising a toddler is hard enough. But even with all these benefits, I can’t resist the siren calls of cute dog videos on Instagram. It’s like a drug. Once

you start watching, you can’t stop. And before you know it, you’re fantasizing about the pitter-patter of little paws on your hardwood floors.

And why wouldn’t you want a pet?

According to research, pets help kids develop empathy and compassion, which are two of the most important values in my opinion.

Plus, who doesn’t love coming home to a furry friend that’s excited to see you? But just for now, I am enjoying my time off.

Fluid movements, props and thoughtful stage lighting immerse audiences in a new psychological contemporary dance, “Floating Walls,” that Cleveland choreographer Antonio Brown is premiering with GroundWorks DanceTheater at the Akron Civic Theatre’s Knight Stage April 14 and 15. “You can feel like you get put into this box,” he says. “I kept trying to think, What were the ways that I can break through that?” Plus, witness a world premiere work by Sidra Bell, the first Black female choreographer commissioned by the New York City Ballet, who is known for creating poignant, surreal movements with avant-garde flair.

Big Brother Our pets play many different roles in our lives.

But now, he’s no longer the baby and plays a new role — big brother to our 15-month-old baby and his sister, Izzy.

In this pet issue, many pet parents admit they like to baby their furry companions. From primping and hair coloring at the doggy salon to showering them with frilly outfits and birthday cakes, the pets on pg. 20 have pampered lives.

When my husband, Tony, and I got our tuxedo cat, Tuna, in 2019, he was our baby. We got him as a tiny, 2-month-old kitten, so he had the rambunctious energy of a little one and batted around toys all day. He is our first cat together, so we gave him so much attention. We constantly fed him puree treats and waved wand toys and a laser pointer for him to chase. Tuna was the ultimate source of companionship during the early lonely days of the pandemic. He was especially comforting when I worked at home and didn’t feel well while pregnant, often curling up in my lap as I worked.

I would love to say that we still spoil Tuna, but I admit that he gets far less attention now that Izzy is the baby of the house. When we brought Izzy home from the hospital, Tuna peered into the car seat with wide eyes like, What in the world is that? Tony then cradled the sleeping baby, and Tuna sniffed her tiny head. As we put her in her crib, Tuna got up on his hind legs to peer through the slats.

It wasn’t long before Tuna gravitated toward the calm and drowsy newborn, sleeping beside her on the couch, sitting next to her in the nursery rocker and perching on Tony’s back as he lay beside her on her elephant playmat. She spent hours knocking around hanging toys in her baby gym, and Tuna eventually discovered he could sit by her and swat at the toys too.

Izzy would grab Tuna’s tail or a clump of fur. You could start to see fear in his eyes, and he would dart away from her, sometimes with a puffed tail. We tried to stop her, but she was so fast.

As the year went on, Izzy started to gain more self-control, and Tuna’s fear mostly dissipated. While she plays in the basement, he perches on her toy chest, close enough for brief pets but far enough that he can scooch out of her reach if she gets too heavy-handed. I love our new bedtime routine. Tuna jumps up onto the rocker’s arm as Izzy pets him. It took a while of holding her hand to teach her to pet gently, but now she mostly does it on her own. She does the cutest thing ever — she nuzzles Tuna with her entire head! It warms my heart. And we know how much she loves him because she says, “Hi, kitty!” far more than “mama” and “dada.”

Tony says Tuna is fine with us spending so much time rushing around caring for Izzy.

But I want Tuna to know that we still love him. Despite less attention, he still snuggles at my feet when I collapse on the couch or bed after chasing around a new walker. He still loves me even though I can’t give him everything. Many pet parents in this issue discuss how they spoil their pets because they think of them as family members. Tuna has become such a loving big brother. He will always be loved as a part of the family no matter what role he plays.

Guinevere with Jordan Dennis

ART WALK Jaleesa Holmes paints on streaks of purple, turquoise, emerald green and magenta hair dyes, blending each together with a gloved hand. Her canvas — the white patches of fur on a particoat over 1 1/2-yearold standard poodle named Guinevere inside Celebrity Pets Salon & Boutique in Akron.

Holmes shows a reference picture of a purple-pink galaxy and notes she’s leaving white spots to emulate sparkling stars as “Guinny” relaxes for primping.

“It puts a smile on your face to see something different, out of the norm,” says the pet stylist, who finishes painting on the vegan, cruelty-free pet dye and lets it sit for a half-hour. A few days earlier, Guinny got shampooed, conditioned and received a hot oil treatment, which made her coat soft like a stuffed animal, and then she got her fur cut and blow-dried.

After rinsing off the excess dye, Holmes dries and combs Guinny’s fur, spritzing on mink oil. She paints her nails a glittery silver and ties blue, pink and purple tulle bows onto her ears — viola Guinny looks like a walking painting of the night sky.

“She seems to have that little glimmer in her eye and looks like she’s smiling,” says Dennis, who has another standard poodle, Zelda. “She knows that she looks like an adorable little floof.”

Celebrity Pets has done several other interesting dye jobs — a poodle with ombre green and blue feet and ears, a Havanese with candy cane-striped legs and a Yorkie with a pumpkinlike orange body and green tail.

One of Holmes’ favorite jobs was Guinny’s first one: a rainbow for Pride Month in June.

Dennis loved how she looked

like a “Lisa Frank dog.” While pet hair coloring can be controversial, Celebrity Pets stylists test a spot for any reactions, and if there are any warning signs or if the pet doesn’t like it, they pump the brakes.

Guinny’s dye jobs certainly turn heads on local trail hikes and neighborhood walks, including one where the driver rolled down the window to say Guinny looked beautiful.

“Guinevere loves the attention,” Dennis says. “It’s an opportunity for her to socialize and have fun, be around new people.” KP

STAR MODEL Kermit the rabbit posed in Amy Marshall’s home studio surrounded by rose petals during a festive Valentine’s Day photo shoot for his person, Stephanie Smanto, and he even donned a crocheted hat for a few minutes before he took it off.

“He’s quite the ham in front of the camera,” says Marshall, the owner of Precious Pet Photography.

Twice, Smanto has taken the 3-yearold lionhead rabbit to get professional glamour shots done by Marshall. The first time, Kermit sat in a mini sleigh and a rabbit-size wicker chair for a holiday photo shoot.

“I understand the bonds parents have with their pets. They just want to do family photos,” says Marshall, who has six dogs, multiple rabbits and guinea pigs, a turtle and a betta fish.

When paparazzi aren’t snapping, Kermit gets free range of the house.

He is never caged, uses the litter box and spends much of his day sleeping, often under Smanto’s bed. When the Cuyahoga Falls resident is home, she feeds him kale and can get him out from under the bed by offering his favorite treat, Craisins.

“Rabbits love to run,” Smanto says.

“He is pampered and spoiled.”

She has had pet rabbits since 1990, but Kermit is the first lionhead rabbit she’s had, and she describes lionheads as having funky personalities. She also has a black-and-white shorthair cat, who gets along well with Kermit. The two chase each other around the house and play.

“Spending time with [pets], getting to know their personalities and developing relationships with them have always been special and meaningful for me,” Smanto says.

Kermit returns the favor, checking on her and going by her when she isn’t feeling well.

“About two and a half years ago, I found out that I need a kidney transplant,” she says, adding that she does dialysis at home. “He can sort of sense when you need him emotionally, and he will sit next to you.”

That special bond is part of the reason Marshall does pet photography, and she often does photo shoots when pets are nearing the end of their lives.

“I’m very thankful to create those memories for them,” Marshall says, “that they’ll now have forever.” AS

BEST DRESSED Michele Hoffman rescued a puppy from a neglectful Pittsburgh home in 2015, and now, that dog, Rousey, a 7-year-old mix of Yorkie, Chihuahua, poodle and Maltese, has a wardrobe of 35-plus outfits she wears while spending time with family members who love her to pieces.

“She is a spoiled rotten princess,” says Hoffman, a Navarre resident. “She’s worth every bit.”

It all started when Hoffman dressed Rousey in a dress with a tutu. “It was the most adorable thing ever,” she says.

Rousey now has a collection of bandannas, collars, scarves and outfits like a pink fluffy vest, a pink Cleveland Browns jersey, a Cleveland Browns cheerleading uniform, a new birthday dress each year and a frilly bikini from when Hoffman took her kayaking on the Cuyahoga and Mohican rivers.

“People went nuts. They’d paddle over to us, see her, pet her, take pictures,” she says. “She just loves it. She thinks all the attention should be for her.”

Adopting a small dog like Rousey, weighing in at 3 pounds, 2 ounces, was a big change for Hoffman, who was

used to having pit bulls. Still, Rousey, who is named after MMA fighter Ronda Rousey and is sassy and full of attitude, acts as a guard dog.

“If I’m home and [my husband] runs the vacuum, Rousey goes nuts. … She’s protecting her mama,” she says.

Hoffman and Rousey always take care of each other. Rousey has a liver shunt, which requires a special diet and medication that Hoffman provides every day. Rousey has already lived past her expected four-year life span. And Hoffman has lupus, so during flare-ups, she spends a lot of time resting in

bed. But Rousey doesn’t mind; she prefers being carried over taking walks and can play with Hoffman on the bed, jumping

by Hoffman’s feet until she runs out of energy.

Hoffman’s kids and grandkids love visiting Rousey and buying her more outfits to dress up in.

Rousey often sits on the porch, overlooking the backyard, watching Hoffman’s grandkids, including Morgan Hall, play — she’s just another member of the family.

“I just love her. She’s like one of my kids,” Hoffman says. “She brings me a lot of happiness and joy.” AS

TOTAL REFRESH Angie Shriver smiles as she pets Martini, a 6-year-old goldendoodle, in between brushing her blond fur and trimming any out-of-place locks.

The owner of Rub My Belly Doggie Spa in Tallmadge explains that Martini visits every two weeks.

“We like to keep her pampered and clean,” she says.

As Shriver brushes and trims, Martini calmly lifts her paws and gives Shriver sloppy kisses.

Shriver rewards Martini’s excellent behavior with crunchy treats and belly rubs, and ties on a cute St. Patrick’s

Day bandanna as she finishes the spa session that included Sensi-Skin shampooing, grooming and teeth cleaning.

“When she comes out of the spa, she does a trot like, Look at me, and circles around you,” says one of her owners and Tallmadge resident Bridget McLaughlin, adding that she’s just as enthusiastic while heading to the spa. “She usually does happy circles all the way in the car there.”

Martini wasn’t always elated to get groomed. She has allergies to food, shampoos and more.

McLaughlin gave her allergy meds, but Martini would still chew, sneeze, have a runny

nose and itch, and she wasn’t eating well or doing much.

McLaughlin worked with Shriver to experiment with different shampoos and eventually found that Sensi-Skin reduces irritations. McLaughlin has seen a total transformation.

“I got my dog back,” she says.

“She wasn’t focusing on chewing her fur off and itching all the time. She’s playful again.”

Shriver knows sensitivities, as her late bichon, Sachi, had sensitive skin and allergies, and it took a while to find that a special shampoo, moisturizing conditioner and scissor cut reduced her itching. Shriver remains extra cautious when grooming.

“We’re very careful, watching nicks and cuts. You got to be careful with the blades, not getting too close to overheating,” she says, adding that frequent, specialized grooming makes dogs feel much better.

Martini is now full of energy, loving trips to Camp Bow Wow, Wingfoot Lake State Park and Crimson Cup Coffee Shop for a puppuccino. Wherever she goes, she demands pets and jumps up for hugs.

“She wants to experience and do everything that she can,” McLaughlin says. “She’s all I ever wanted and then some.”

GIRL AROUND TOWN When Soka leaves her Cuyahoga Falls house, the 2-year-old Bernedoodle always wears a bandanna from her collection of nearly 50 — even when she’s just walking around the neighborhood.

“She is living that single millennial dog mom spoiled life,” says owner Kelsie Moeller, who named her after the Star Wars character Ahsoka Tano and photographs Soka and other dogs for her Instagram.

“There’s a moment of complete silence where they’re stunned because it defies all understanding of how it happened,” says marketing and sales manager Libby Pence.

“Your mind boggles.”

Since its opening seven years ago, the theater has been one of only a handful in the

country exclusively dedicated to magic and one of even fewer magic museums.

Madhrikan’s showcases classic and rare tricks from the late 1800s and early 1900s with modern performance flair.

“We offer an experience of how magic was performed over 100 years ago,” says Pence. “We have a deep love of the history of magic.”

People gasp when they walk into the parlor-style 49-seat theater inspired by Devant’s Egyptian Hall theater in London that takes them back to the turn of the 20th century. It helps that historic lithographs of famed Ohio magicians like Howard Thurston and Grover George are on display in the museum, along with a lithograph and costume from Virgil and Julie

and other incredible memorabilia. The theater is part of Catalpa Trading Co., which sells 800 magic tricks, and also hosts a popular summer magic school.

Although shows at Madhrikan’s are old-fashioned, Raymond “Madhrikan” Hagood says the quality is like a professional Las Vegas-style show with expert lighting, music and costumes.

They drew in 27 professional magicians to watch, including five who have seen the shows three times. The performance of the classic linking rings trick in which solid rings come together is complete with “Clair de Lune” playing and milky blue lights shining.

“You actually get lost in their world and get to be a kid again — think that magic might actually happen,” Pence says.

Choose from six shows including the fast-paced select Friday Madhrikan’s Magic Show with him, Mysterio, who is Hagood’s son, Taylor, and two assistants that includes the mascot moth, a solo select Saturday Mysterio show with effects like pyrotechnics, a solo, intimate Madhrikan show June 16, July 11 and July 25 with close-up magic like a disappearing coin trick, a Halloween show, a Christmas show and a new hypnosis show Aug. 11. The latter uses magic to tap into the subconscious mind, which occupies about 90 percent of our brain, for intriguing effects on audience participants.

“It’s a demonstration of the power of the subconscious, which can be tremendously funny,” says Hagood.

Madhrikan focuses on tricks that tell stories to draw in audience members. For example, the floating table trick tells the beautiful tale of a couple who falls in love before one dies, returning as a floating table wanting one more dance with its beloved.

or Erin Rutherford, it seemed like an eternity as she waited on the phone with the 911 operator.

Her 14-year-old son, Ethan, had just collapsed on the basement floor in sudden cardiac arrest.

In an emergency, CPR performed by a family member saved a teen’s life.

Just moments before, Ethan helped his father, Mark, carry the snowblower to the basement. There was a snowstorm raging outside with more than 10 inches of snow. They were going to prepare the snowblower to tackle the driveway when Ethan suddenly dropped to the ground. Now, Erin was watching as Mark desperately tried to bring Ethan back to life with CPR. “Ethan was a purply-gray,” says Erin. “It was the scariest moment of my life. In my brain, I was saying, He is dying right in front of me.” Just six months earlier,

Mark had received his CPR certification through Ethan’s Boy Scouts camp. It was a decision that likely saved his son’s life.

“When Ethan collapsed, I didn’t think — I just acted,” says Mark. “I am so thankful that I decided to take that class. I knew exactly what to do.” Mark’s voice cracks as he holds back tears. “Every time I pushed into his chest, I said in my head, Come back to me son. Come back to me.”

With the blizzard outside, a snowplow helped an ambulance reach the Rutherford home. When paramedics

arrived at the scene, the situation was dire. Mark was administering CPR, but Ethan had no pulse and was not breathing. Paramedics took over CPR and immediately deployed the automated external defibrillator. Ethan was defibrillated five times before he was revived. Those are moments that Erin will never forget.

“The paramedics asked for us to clear the room, so I went to the kitchen, and I was praying, Please help my son.

Help my son,” Erin says. “I heard them carrying Ethan up the steps and one of the paramedics made eye contact

with me and I just knew that they had gotten him back. I knew he was breathing and had a pulse. I knew my boy was still alive.”

Ethan was transported to Wooster Community Hospital but needed more specialized care. The ER physician ordered his transfer to Akron Children’s Hospital. But with the massive snowstorm, the hospital’s transport service wasn’t running, and Life Flight was grounded. That’s when the city of Wooster and the Ohio Department of Transportation sprang into action. They worked together to get Ethan the transport he needed. A snowplow was deployed to clear a path all the way to the hospital, with an ambulance carrying Ethan following closely behind.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly.

Death can occur within minutes if a victim does not receive treatment. Ethan’s survival depended on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. Cardiac

arrest affects thousands of people annually with about 70 percent of them occurring in the home. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

“Anyone is capable of saving a life,” says Valerie Weber, American Heart Association senior community impact director. “Hands-Only CPR is just two simple steps. Call 911 and then press hard and fast in the center of the chest.

If there is an AED available, make sure that someone is going to retrieve it. When moments matter, someone needs to act. Learning Hands-Only CPR will give you the confidence to intervene and possibly save a life.”

In 2021-22, American Heart Association trained more than 33,000 Northeast Ohio residents in CPR and bystander CPR. The Association wants every household or family to have at least one person who knows how to perform CPR. After his cardiac arrest, Ethan’s care team decided he needed an implantable

cardioverter defibrillator.

It’s a small battery-powered device placed in the chest to detect and stop irregular heartbeats known as arrhythmias. An ICD continuously monitors the heartbeat and delivers electric shocks, when needed, to restore a regular heart rhythm.

Today, Ethan is a happy, healthy 18-year-old and will graduate from high school this year. He is on the varsity bowling team and has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio to continue his education in heavy diesel mechanics. “They still don’t know why I went into cardiac arrest, and we may never know,” Ethan says. “I am just living my life as a normal kid doing normal stuff.” Ethan gets choked up when recalling that day four years ago and says his dad will always be his hero. “He’s one of the best people ever.

He saved me. He saved my life,” he says.

Mark says it was definitely a team effort. “In my mind, it was taking that CPR class, and the paramedics not giving up, and everyone putting their heads together and doing their jobs. It was teamwork from the moment that nurse trained me in CPR, to the paramedics shocking my son back to life.”

What to Expect: Lift a whole car using a lever and pulley system, make waves with a wave machine, manipulate an energy grid, see breathtaking views in the planetarium, check out dinosaur bones and make your hair stand straight up using an electrostatic generator. Find these hands-on exhibits, activities and play areas that teach kids about biology, energy, paleontology, space and more inside the 320,000-square-foot Center of Science and Industry. “It’s not just something where you sit and study.

Everything you do at COSI is interactive and comes to life in front of you,” says director of communications Kristy Williams.

Why Go: With so many engaging activities, kids are in for a ton of fun, which blends perfectly with loads of education. “They’re learning valuable life lessons about pulley systems, about simple machines, about gears,” Williams says. “They’re learning STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — and they’re not even realizing it. They’re just having fun.” Williams brings her niece and nephew, who are 2 and 7, to COSI, and they especially enjoy the Little Kidspace, which includes a farm area, a water play area, a doctor area and more.

Her niece drives the mini ambulance while her nephew pretends to be a doctor and interprets X-rays. “COSI provides the tools to give them those opportunities to let their imaginations run wild,” she says.

Don’t Miss: Kids love superheroes, so don’t miss “Nature’s Superheroes: Life at the Limits,” coming to COSI April 15 through Sept. 4. Meet organisms with extraordinary survival tactics, like live axolotls that can regenerate limbs and larger-than-life models of beetles that children can climb on to better understand the beetles’ pinchers. “It’s a really neat hands-on exhibit for kids and adults that showcases these different ways that animals thrive and survive in ways that you don’t see every day,” Williams says.

What to Expect: Standout activities include balancing in the gravity room that’s tilted 25 degrees, building a dam to stop flowing water, creating a bridge out of magnets and watching 3D educational films about nature in your backyard and oceans. At Imagination Station, kids can learn while experiencing these interactive activities.

“Exhibits are really designed to get kids excited and inspire them to explore different aspects of STEAM education,” says senior information officer Amy Mohr.

“Kids learn through play. It’s getting handson and seeing how things work.”

Why Go: Curiosity can bloom at Imagination Station. “We’re really trying to prepare the kids in our community to go out, to be the next engineer, to be the next innovator, to be the next artist,” Mohr says.

“We’re hoping that these early experiences here propel them in that direction.” And it’s not just science that kids learn about; they can also learn some important life lessons.

In the Tinkering Space, families can experiment with a topic, like circuits in April.

They won’t get set instructions and instead work on figuring out how to complete a circuit with batteries and other objects.

“The idea is you want to make a mistake but not look at it as being a failure,” she says.

“It’s like, OK, I’ve made a mistake. How can I make this better?”

Don’t Miss: Embrace your adventurous side with a bike ride along a tightrope — suspended 20 feet above the ground. The highwire cycle is one of the most sought-after activities at Imagination Station. It teaches kids and adults alike about counterbalance and weight, but it can also be daunting.

“Little kids are probably a little braver than some of the adults that we’ve seen on it,” Mohr says. “It’s definitely something that gets your adrenaline going.”

Easley Winery Indianapolis

Jack and Joan Easley began making wine in their basement in the late 1960s when they hit a roadblock. It was still illegal for them to make and sell wine because of the state’s Prohibition laws.

The couple bought a small vineyard in southern Michigan, but they wanted to have their business in Indiana. In 1971, the laws changed in Indiana, and they purchased an old ice cream factory in downtown Indianapolis in the Cole-Noble District. They had their first crush of grapes in the facility in 1974, establishing Easley Winery.

The grapes they use are traminettes, which are hybrid grapes developed at the University of Illinois that tend to be more floral. They are primarily from Easley’s Cape Sandy Vineyard in Indiana, which provides an ideal growing region with cool breezes and limestone soil. Here are some standouts from Easley Winery’s Reggae line.

Haven of Rest was founded on faith by the Rev. Charles C. Thomas and Marjorie Ruth Thomas in a small storefront on North Howard Street.

1952

Ground was broken for a new building with a clinic for those dealing with alcohol abuse on East Buchtel Avenue.

1974

Construction of a modern, more functional Rescue Mission was completed.

1976

Founder, Rev. Charles C. Thomas died and was succeeded by his son, the Rev. Curtis Thomas.

1979

An increase in homelessness created a need for a separate facility for women and children and our Marjorie Ruth Thomas Harvest Home was opened.

1989

Additions to Harvest Home were made and completed—increasing our capacity by 50 percent.

1995

Client Services Center opened to meet the growing need for comprehensive programs for men and women.

1996

Marjorie Ruth Thomas died at 88 after 33 years helping thousands of men, women and children in need.

2003

After 90 combined years of service, Rev. Curtis Thomas and his wife, Eileen, retired and Rev. Ben Walker began as Executive Director.

2011

to grow as a women’s shelter that became essential for the Akron area.

In 1979, the Marjorie Ruth Thomas Harvest Home was opened.

The need for more space for expanding programs and services was evident so the Haven of Rest purchased the Sanginiti’s Restaurant and land across the street from the Mission. This made it possible for us to open the Client Services Center in 1995 where emergency shelter was provided for men needing help.

Eighty years ago Haven of Rest Ministries’ doors opened at 41 N. Howard St. Rev. C.C. Thomas and his wife, Marjorie Ruth, answered God’s profound call on their lives to serve those in need.

During that time in 1943, much was going on in our world including the Great Depression, World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. In the midst of all that, Akron’s Christcentered ministry began.

As I research through Haven of Rest’s history, I can see how God directed and led the ministry over the years.

Because of growing needs, the Mission moved to a larger building on Buchtel Avenue. Then the Mission moved again in 1974 to its current location at 175 E. Market St. The ministry continued

Thriving in ministry in the Akron community for 80 years, we have become a woven piece of fabric in our area where we helped thousands of men, women and children begin anew by ministering to their physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs. MEN ' S MINIS TRY Haven of Rest Men's Ministry is a program within the larger Haven of Rest Ministry organization that specifically serves men who are struggling with addiction, homelessness and other life challenges. The program is designed to provide men with a safe and supportive environment where they can receive the help and resources they need to overcome their struggles and lead fulfilling lives.

The Men's Ministry program offers a variety of services, including addiction recovery programs, emergency shelter, transitional housing, food assistance and career development. The program also provides spiritual guidance and support to help men find hope and purpose in their lives.

The addiction recovery programs at Haven of Rest are designed to help men and women overcome their addiction to drugs or alcohol through a combination of counseling, support groups and other therapeutic services. The program also includes job training and life skills classes to help build a strong foundation for their future success.

The goal of Haven of Rest Men's Ministry is to empower clients to break the cycle of addiction and homelessness, and to help them achieve a better life for themselves and their families.

“This Time It’s Different”

After years of false starts, Greg knows he’s finally on the right path.

Greg has faced a lot of challenges in his 57 years. He admits that many of them are due to his own poor choices. But his life has changed since coming to Haven of Rest for help! He thanks God and friends like you for helping him get back on track — this time, for good.

Greg grew up in a bad neighborhood, with a father with alcoholism. After his parents divorced, his mother did her best to keep the family together. He credits her for raising him in the church and keeping him focused on sports and off the streets.

But after his sister died of kidney failure, it all became too much. Greg started drinking at 17 and running with a bad crowd. Soon, he was using heavier drugs.

Over the next 30 years, Greg’s life swung back and forth. He held steady jobs, married and had two daughters. Then something would knock him back out of control, like when his brother was murdered by a jealous rival. Another time, he says, it was just because he had too much time and money on his hands.

“I took my eyes off the Word,” he says sadly. “I lost contact with myself. I failed again.”

Greg came to Haven of Rest almost 20 years ago for a meal and a shower. At the time, he wasn’t ready to commit and walked back out again.

Then, a few years ago, he started experiencing severe stomach pains. “Finally, I had to crawl to the hospital,” Greg remembers. That’s when he was told he had stage 4 colon cancer, which soon spread to his liver. After chemotherapy and three major surgeries, Greg knew things had to change.

“I wanted to get my life back together,” Greg says, “so I went to the place that helped me. Haven of Rest really put their arms out for me and welcomed me back. They’ve been blessing me since I’ve been here.”

As a resident of Haven of Rest, Greg is finally living the life he’s wanted for so long. “My health, my mind — I’m feeling good about myself,” he says.

“I’m back in the Word, praying and studying every night, just working for God.” “This time it’s different, because I want to do this,” he says. “I didn’t want to before, but this time I have the desire.”

Leaving Confident

Donna was hesitant to stay but was glad she did.

When Donna arrived at Haven of Rest’s Harvest Home she admitted she was afraid. She didn’t know what it would be like in a new place with new people. Donna felt vulnerable, alone, and anxious, but after receiving help from staff and volunteers, she said she was glad she stayed.

“I learned they really cared about me and my baby, ” she says.

Donna talks about the programs and services she has used to overcome her challenges and heal. She is using the Mission’s resources to help her reach her goals. “I am at the Learning Center working to obtain my GED,” she says.

She is continuing to use the Learning Center and its resources to help her find a good job. Donna has also completed the nutrition and parenting classes at Harvest Home. She says she enjoyed the Bible studies and daily devotions which helped her to grow as well.

Coming from a tumultuous background, Donna had to overcome many circumstances that caused her to feel defeated.

Her mom kept going back to Donna’s dad who had alcoholism and abused her. When Donna turned 13 years old, her dad died from cirrhosis of the liver. She was led down a wrong path, became addicted to drugs and did not finish high school. She found herself in and out of jail. During this time, she had several relationships and had three children. Donna’s youngest sister helped raise two of them, and she gave her third child up for adoption.

WOMEN ’ S MINIS TRY Harvest Home was opened in 1979 in response to the growing need for an emergency shelter for women and children in crisis situations. The shelter can accommodate up to 59 women and children.

The Women’s Day Room is the entry point for women to begin the rehabilitation process that can lead to the stabilization and re-establishment of their lives.

After finding out she was pregnant with her fourth child, she began her sobriety journey at City Hospital. She also served a short time in jail. She was determined to go through rehab and wrote the judge a letter asking for help, which she was granted. When Donna’s baby was delivered, she had postpartum depression. Her baby, James, was taken away from her for a month, but eventually she was able to regain custody. Not too long after that, she came to Harvest Home.

With delight, Donna talks about how she just moved into her apartment and was pleased with her surroundings. “I received all the furniture I needed in my apartment for my baby and myself. I have never had so many things given to me,” she says.

As women come in off the streets, they find a variety of essential services available to them, including laundry, showers, telephones and mail pickup.

In addition, there are counseling rooms where they can meet privately with Haven of Rest staff or other social service agency workers to discuss problems and needs. Classroom space is also provided for life skills training, Bible studies and group meetings. The Women’s Day Room includes a special quiet room where those who are pregnant or ill can rest. The Harvest Home’s 20-bed women’s dormitory provides safe, clean lodging for homeless single women.

Donna shares how she enjoyed going through the program at Harvest Home and that she would return if she felt like she needed to. With a beaming, confident countenance, she conveys she is 14 months sober and plans on finding a good job.

Those who come are welcomed into a warm, family-like atmosphere. Every effort is made to meet women’s and children’s immediate needs and to help them take the steps that can lead to meaningful lives.

Education and Career Development

Haven of Rest serves the community by providing meals, clothing and shelter while sharing the love of Jesus Christ at a number of free events such as our annual community summer picnic, Hope Sports Camp for kids, happy birthday Jesus Party and toys for Christmas.

HOPE TOTE

At the Learning Center, the education and career development programs help men and women learn the skills they need to find and keep a job. Haven of Rest’s Education Program allows men and women to enhance their computer skills so they become employable as well as work to complete their high school diploma or GED.

The Career Development Coordinator works with the residents to identify skills and assess what kind of jobs would be most suitable for them.

Success in the career development program is completion of classes enabling residents to secure employment, vocational training or continue their education.

Operation Hope Tote is a special outreach where individuals, church groups, school classes, civic organizations and businesses are asked to fill purple Hope Tote bags with personal care items (such as toothpaste, soap, deodorant, brush, comb, shampoo, etc.). These bags are then distributed the week before Easter to hundreds of homeless and struggling people in the community.

HOPE SP ORTS C AMP Hope Sports Camp is a special summer outreach for inner-city boys and girls in grades three through eight. They benefit not only from learning the fundamentals of basketball and volleyball, but also from interacting with leaders who model wholesome, Christ-centered lifestyles.

EMERGENC Y SERVICES Our emergency services are available free of charge to all in need. We provide meals, overnight shelter, clothing, showers, laundry and other vital services. See Men’s Ministry and Women’s Ministry for more details on shelter and other services. Providing safe shelter has always been a key part of Haven of Rest’s efforts to help. During this past fiscal year, 42,297 nights of lodging were provided to men, women and children who otherwise might have spent the night on the street.

Haven of Rest’s Client Services Center was built in response to a need for additional facilities that would make possible a more effective ministry to the many homeless people in Greater Akron and the surrounding seven-county area. The building contains the Men’s Day Room, Women’s Day Room, 100-bed men’s dormitory and a clothing receiving and distribution area.

CLOTHING RECEIVING AND DIS TRIBUTION Each month, Haven of Rest is the recipient of thousands of pounds of donated new and gently used clothing which is processed, stored and dispensed at the Client Services Center’s receiving and distribution area. A donation drivethru is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.

Freedom from life-controlling issues: Addiction is the primary reason men seek the program for help. The mission’s goal is for men to maintain sobriety.

Providing a Biblical worldview: As a Christ-centered program, we believe that God and His word speaks to and shapes every aspect of life. Our goal is to impart basic Biblical literacy that leads to the practical application of these truths.

Work and sustained employment: A major factor in the ongoing success of an individual is finding and maintaining sustainable employment. Our goal is to equip men with the necessary tools to find and keep a job.

Maintaining healthy community: God created us to be relational beings.

As such, vibrant connections to positive relationships that include a solid church community with which to grow are essential. Our goal is to see men connected to a local church and to a mentor.

Obtaining sustainable housing: Addictions and a transient lifestyle often accompany one another. As a program that serves many homeless people, our goal is to see men providing for their sustainable housing needs.

A dog made a whimsical dance partner for an Ohio Ballet ballerina during “The Match Girl.” Late choreographer Heinz Poll, of the former Ohio Ballet, crafted a retelling of the classic story of an impoverished girl who finds comfort in beautiful visions seen in the light of matches she must sell in the winter. She envisions dancing with a dog — an unorthodox approach by Poll for the sequence that often uses a costumed performer. The girl chases happy dreams through her last matches, with the final ones illuminating visions of her loving late grandmother before she succumbs to the cold with a warm smile. It’s a bittersweet piece by an acclaimed choreographer who gifted incredible works to Greater Akron and beyond.
