Love and Acceptance All pets are unique, and so are their needs.

Our 19-year-old cat, Marmalade, recently died. I was only part of his life for the past 14 years, so I guess you could call him my “stepcat.” I tried my best with him, but we never really connected. I think he saw me as the other guy in the household, and I brought two dogs to the animal stepfamily, a Labrador retriever and a Brussels griffon. My wife also brought her Boston terrier, so we had a full house of pets. I love cats — don’t misunderstand that. I’ve had several cats over the years and always had great relationships with them. Marmalade was a different kind of cat, however. When I first met my wife, Marmalade spent most of his time perched on top of her kitchen cabinet, and he almost never came down. Those years were easy because I never saw him. Marmalade was an indoor cat, and he was not very curious and never ventured outside. He was afraid of dogs and people. When my wife moved from Columbus to Akron, Marmalade went into full panic mode. He had to be fed on a table because the dogs would eat his food if it was on the floor. When he ate, he didn’t like food in his whiskers, so he would shake his head, launching food all over the place, on the wall and all over the floor. There was constantly some chaos. He cried if you shut any door in the house, but if the door was open at night, the dogs would eat all of his food. We continually had to juggle keeping the dogs from eating the cat food and giving Marmalade what he needed so he wouldn’t cry.

After our Boston terrier died a few years ago, we realized that Marmalade was mainly afraid of her, and he started to come downstairs more. I thought, All is going to be well, and we will have a somewhat normal household. With two dogs gone, we only had a dog half the cat’s size left. But the little Brussels griffon carried on the tradition of harassing poor old Marmalade.

Marmalade Although it wasn’t perfect, we had about a year where things were relatively calm. Then Marmalade developed a condition called yowling that causes cats to cry like they’re in pain. It’s about the most unnerving thing you could imagine. When our son was born, my nerves and patience for Marmalade’s yowling came to an all-time low. His crying often woke the baby, and you never knew what Marmalade needed. We opened doors, made sure his food and water were full and took him to the litter box. But caring for a senior cat — and a baby — was more than I was equipped to handle.

towards the end. I spent time with him, hanging out and petting him, and I think we were mostly good by the time he died. I’m no Mother Teresa, but I did my best. It’s not easy handling a difficult pet, but we gave him the best life we could. For more stories about living with pets, check out our pets feature on pg. 24. Some local pet owners talked with us about what they do to connect with their furry family members. I’m going to take a break from cats for a while. We still have the Brussels griffon and a 2-year-old son, which is plenty for me.

April 2003, by Kurt Kleidon: Anyone who has been to a game at Canal Park knows that watching the game is only half the fun of a minor league baseball game. With the promotions, fireworks shows and mid-inning entertainment, baseball is photo provided by Rogue Awakening Yoga and Strength Training sometimes overshadowed by the rest of the activities. For this season, the Aeros and Canal Park have added some special events and reasons to visit the ballpark. April 11 is the Temperature Game. If it’s above 54 degrees the game goes on as normal, but if it is 54 degrees or below, everyone’s ticket is redeemable for another game in April or May.

BUILDING CREATIVITY Who better to design a playground than a kid? Last summer, children at the Lawton Community Center in Akron drew their dream playgrounds, and those ideas were incorporated into the final design of the new playground at Kerr Park. The spot, complete with slides and many obstacles to climb, was built by West Akron volunteers in the fall, with the help of Kaboom!, a national nonprofit focused on safe play spaces. Now, it’s the perfect time to get kids outdoors, playing in a spot built specifically for them. 924 Nome Ave., Akron

Among the mid-inning events will be this year’s premier of the “Catchthe-Aeros-Player’s-DirtySocks-in-a-Laundry-Basket Contest.” If the fan catches all the socks, he or she receives a prize that is not enough of a reward if the fan catches one of the dirty socks in the face.

FLUFFY FLOW If you’re a pet owner who wants to do everything with your furry friends, it’s time to try kitten and puppy yoga — you might even meet your next furry family member there. At Rogue Awakening Yoga and Strength Training, specialty classes open to the public through a partnership with One of a Kind Pet Rescue allow you to pet some friendly puppies and kitties as you stretch. Although you can’t bring your own pets, most puppies and kittens on-site are adoptable through One of a Kind. Upcoming kitten and puppy yoga classes are set for April 22 and May 14. 2727 W. 2022: Canal Park and its home team, now called the Akron RubberDucks, continue to attract fans, with crowds of 5,000-plus by the end of the 2021 season, cleveland.com reports. The team, which had a 73-46 record last summer, has nearly 70 home games for the 2022 season, with an exciting home opener against the Reading Fightin’ Phils set for April 12. Promotional fun awaits fans all season, with April 27 as ginger appreciation night, May 11 as bring your dog to the game night, June 3 as Star Wars night, Aug. 24 as Aeros night and much more, along with nearly 30 games set to have fabulous fireworks shows.

My entire apartment is childproofed, top to bottom — which may not seem unusual, except that I don’t have any kids. The pantry, all the closets and the cabinets under the bathroom and kitchen sinks have child safety locks on them. Many things are kept in latched trunks or hung far off the ground. Rosa Apollo

It’s all because of my cats, Rosa and Apollo. My girlfriend, Cara, and I adopted them from One of a Kind Pet Rescue in the summer of 2020, falling in love with them immediately. Upon bringing them home, we were quickly introduced to their kitten mischief. They’re partners in crime. Apollo has never met a drawer he couldn’t open, and whenever the mood strikes, he insists on pulling all our drawers and cabinets open. Rosa stands by until he does, and then she makes quick work of eating any string-like objects she can find, like hair ties, rubber bands, shoelaces and hoodie strings. She even enjoys dining on certain kinds of fabric.

Her habit has resulted in several vet visits, and no one can figure out why she’s so inclined to eat those things. Each time, she has thankfully been okay, seeming unbothered by it all. No damage done — except giving her moms lots of anxiety and some hefty vet bills.

Now that the closets and cabinets are locked, Rosa and Apollo have found new ways to make life interesting.

I mostly work remotely, so I often spend my mornings with my earbuds in, dodging the cats as they sprint around the apartment, chasing each other and getting their energy out before their afternoon naps. It’s chaos, and it makes me smile every single day. They also want to be a part of everything I’m doing. They’ve walked back and forth on my desk during meetings, have sat on my lap during interviews and have even clawed the bun on top of my head during a phone call. My younger brother, Bob, sounds exasperated every time he tells me that we need to discipline the cats more, perhaps by spraying them with water. But the problem is that Rosa

I often get emotional over how lucky Cara and I were to find such unique, charming, loving cats. As they approach their second birthdays, they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. We would do anything for them, so I guess we’ll keep shopping in the baby section for more child safety locks to keep the little troublemakers safe.

Toby has a lot of energy and “He kind of reminded us of a chocolate bar,” Rice says. “He’s a tri-color rather than a blonde corgi. We thought that a chocolate name fit him well.” Toby was a COVID puppy, so Rice spent a lot of time with him. “My partner and I both worked from home, so we were always around Toby,” she says. Rice has been taking photos of him since he was very young, and she started sharing them on her Instagram account, Your Boy Toblerone, at the beginning of this year.

His favorite thing to do is play with toys, which I love. I’ll be sad if he grows out of it. He loves a good squeaky toy.”

Meeting even more corgis and dog owners through Instagram has been a pleasant surprise for Rice. “There’s definitely a community of dog groups like Corgis of Ohio,” she says. “Other corgi owners have contacted me in the area about course meetups, so that’s going to be super fun.”

Rice recently moved from Columbus to Highland Square, and she and Toby are adjusting well to life in Akron. “One of Toby’s favorite things is to go

Elton Rockin’ Dog

Rachael Reynolds moved to Elton the Rocketdog, as a creative outlet. Akron in August 2020 from Arizona with her springer “It has taken some training. Reynolds calls her dog Elton, but his full name is Sir Elton, the Rocketdog — inspired by none other than musician Elton John. “I’ve seen him nine times in concert,” she says. “The Lion King was my first introduction to him, along with watching Princess Diana’s funeral as a kid. … I just always loved him.” Reynolds is a photographer who primarily focuses on weddings and portraits, so she shoots photos of Elton, for her Instagram account, Sir

Reynolds says Elton also loves climbing rocks at the ledges. “That is his thing,” she says. “He’s a little daredevil.” Being on Dog Instagram, as Reynolds calls it, has opened up doors that has helped her as a dog parent. “We’ve discovered some local places to get his food. I’m really into making sure that he’s eating well, and it’s been a good education space,” she says. “He prob-

ably eats better than I do now.” They went through four kinds of kibble before Reynolds finally connected with Lake Erie Pets in Ohio City, a local small batch kibble maker. “It’s amazing, and there are no preservatives outside of salt in it,” she says. “Elton eats the whitefish and duck recipe.” She also recommends Morty’s Munchies in Cuyahoga Falls. “Nicole at Morty’s Munchies — she’s fantastic and brings a lot of different companies in, like shampoo from this lady she met on the East Coast. I really like the idea of not putting chemicals on him. I’m not super crunchy in my everyday life, but I do think it’s better to err on the crunchy side.”

Cat’s Life Canoe trips, bike rides and trail walks — Tiger the Adventure Cat certainly lives up to her name. “She truly is an adventure cat,” says owner Lindsey Jo Scott. “She loves to do things that traditionally I’ve never had a cat love to do.” Before Scott adopted Tiger in 2016, she and her husband, Brad, were interested in finding a cat who would go camping with them. They were thrilled to discover Tiger’s adventurous spirit and began harness and leash training her right away. Within six weeks of adopting her, Tiger was out on walks, first in their yard, and then 28

But overall, her stamina is good, and she loves hiking. “She just looks so regal, in the woods with her harness and her leash on,” Scott adds. Scott started snapping pictures of Tiger’s adventures and posting them on her Instagram account, Tiger the Adventure Cat, in 2017, which serves as a “passion project” and a bright spot in her day. Since then, Tiger has visited mountains and beaches, and has led them on trails in Maine, New York and North Carolina.

“I think there’s something so magical about the pace at which we walk when she’s hiking. We kind of just follow her lead,” Scott says. “It’s so cool and so fun to be able to do that with her and, in a small way, experience the world the way she’s experiencing it.”

Wyman takes them hiking and to a dog park in Portage Lakes, where Lucy and Bobbi go dock diving. “They absolutely love to go there and play in the water,” Wyman says. They also love playing with their cousins, Wyman’s sister’s border collies. “When I’m FaceTiming my sister, we have to show our dogs,” Wyman says. “Lucy will literally lick the phone because she gets so excited to see them and can recognize them on FaceTime.”

Lucy and Bobbi have also visited many dog-friendly places in Akron, like the patios at Gasoline Alley and Ignite Brewing Co., and Biggins’ Big Dip, where they got puppy ice cream cones. Wherever they go, their dog tags showcase their personalities — “99 percent chance I’m hungry” on Lucy and “Just pet me and tell me I’m pretty” on Bobbi. The Golden Gals are ready to say hi and have a great time.

She had a miniature poodle as a child that hated cuddling, so it was important to find a dog that liked to snuggle up on the couch or bed.

Moss was Price’s first Iggy, who she got while she lived in an apartment. She got Ivy and Oak later, after she and Tony moved into a house.

“They call Italian greyhounds the Velcro dog because they are constantly touching you or in your lap or snuggling up to you,” she says.

“Moss is 9 years old now,” she says. “He’s what I call my soul dog — that one dog in your life that you have a special connection with. That’s Moss.”

And her wish came true. Now, her three dogs — Moss, Ivy and Oak — sleep in bed with her and her husband, Tony, under the blanket. “We have a

I thought, People have got to be sick of seeing pictures of my dogs,” she says. “I decided to give them their own designated Instagram page. That way, if friends wanted to follow and see all the crazy pictures I was posting, they could do so.”

Cabin Fever Guide Places for kids to reset, have fun and learn this spring

Coming out of pandemic isolation, kids may be incredibly rambunctious this spring. It’s been a long, cold winter, with the COVID-19 Omicron variant and booster shots. But spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation — not to mention the warmer weather and trees and flowers starting to bloom. If you’re looking for places to take the kids to reset this spring, consider these options that are both fun and educational. They are mostly geared for tykes between 2 and 10, but even grownups can enjoy them.

AKRON CHILDREN’S MUSEUM The vision for a children’s museum in Akron came to Betsy and Ryan Hartschuh years ago as they traveled the country. They stopped in many cities that had their own museums just for kids and thought, Why doesn’t Akron have this? After overwhelming support for a pop-up space at Lock 3, the Akron Children’s Museum opened its doors in a more permanent fashion in 2016 after reaching fundraising goals and partnering with the city. Traci Buckner, the museum’s executive director, notes the museum has hosted nearly 200,000 visitors since it opened. While the past two years have been a challenge with COVID-19, the city is dropping its mask requirements as

we go to press in mid-March, and more people are starting to get out. Buckner says the museum will soon be expanding an additional 3,000 square feet for a total of 10,000 square feet of interactive space that includes more than 22 exhibits. “We are focused on how children can learn through play,” Buckner says. “We recently formalized a relationship with the Akron Public Schools to be one of the host providers for what they call their Essential Experiences. Those experiences are funded by the G.A.R. Foundation. We will be one of those providers for the next three years. All 1,800 kindergarteners will get to come to the museum for this learning experience over about 55 days during the course of

the school year. We’re really excited about that.” Inside, kids can play in Akronthemed exhibit areas, some of which are sponsored by local businesses such as Acme Fresh Market (Down on the Farm) and Smucker’s (Farmer’s Market). There is also a theater, a baby zone, Canal Corner and a Little Monster Maker Space for kids to see, touch and learn with the help of staff and volunteers. Buckner says the museum is filling up fast for birthday celebrations, with more than 60 scheduled for the year. CAFE O’PLAY John Green, owner of Cafe O’Play, says when they were putting together their business plan, they talked to 10 sets of parents for input. What was the most common response? They wanted a play area where their kids could be physically active. The concept behind Cafe O’Play is two-fold: There’s a nice coffee house space and an active indoor playground area adjacent to the cafe. “We really zeroed in on the idea of unstructured, physical, active, imaginative play,” Green says, “and that’s what kids do here.” In the cafe, the menus are geared towards adults and kids. “Moms make up about 70 percent of our parent business,” says Green. “So we have a menu that is really healthy, with some great salads. We have some grownup plates, like a Mediterranean plate and a cheese plate, which are really popular. But we do have things that kids enjoy as well. Right below the counter is a kids’ menu. We do what’s called a Kid Tin. It’s a muffin tin and kids can pick out six different items to put in

it. They can pick salami and crackers, goldfish and grapes and so on. Last year we sold 17,000 Kid Tins.” The play area, which is approximately 5,000 square feet, features toddler-specific zones for children up to 36 months. There are cushions, ramps, toys and a small climbing structure for toddlers. Older kids get to play on a massive climbing structure that is built with a series of colorful tubes, slides, obstacle courses, ramps and stairs. Another fun and educational attraction is an “EyePlay” interactive floor. The system was developed by Eye Click Industries and features a nearly unlimited amount of games projected onto an 8-foot-by-12-foot white floor. The games can be changed based on the age group. Parents can register online for open play times and special events such as book readings and magic shows. Green says capacity is still limited, but this may change as restrictions ease. STARK COUNTY LIBRARY You can do a lot for free with a library card, and one of the best libraries in the area for fun and free activities is the Stark County Library.

At the Lake Community Branch, kids from kindergarten to fifth grade can join events such as the Lego Club, where they use their imaginations to build whatever their minds can dream up. Creative play with building blocks stimulates problem-solving skills and encourages spatial understanding and math — and they are fun!

Spring has (thankfully) finally sprung, and we can begin to dedicate some time to feeling better and healthier. One way to do that is by cutting down on gluten intake. This month, residents of the Buckeye state will be able to try some gluten-free beers from Canada’s Glutenberg.

While the brewery is based in Montreal, the largest city in Quebec, 50 percent of the brewery’s production is exported to the United States. Glutenberg offers a handful of offerings throughout the year, though the following releases are the most readily available around Northeast Ohio.

While most breweries may offer a beer or two as a glutenreduced option for consumers, Glutenberg’s entire beer portfolio is 100 percent gluten-free.

This ale was Glutenberg’s inaugural beer, and it was a strong start for the brewery. On the nose, beer drinkers get notes of floral hops and lemon, which follow through this malty but light beer ($10.99, 4-packs).

Things first got off the ground for the company in 2011. After more than a year of planning, Glutenberg finally unleashed its first beer — its flagship, Blonde — to the Quebec market. Just a year later, the brewery cleaned house at the 2012 World Beer Cup, one of the world’s most prestigious beer award ceremonies. Glutenberg took home all three medals in the Gluten-Free Beer category.

INDIA PALE ALE The brewery’s IPA offering boasts an extremely accessible jolt of citrus hop aroma and flavors that never kick you in the palate. Tropical and pine notes come through to the finish of this 2016 World Beer Cup winner ($10.99, 4-packs) that should please aficionados of the style.

STOUT Who would have thought that a gluten-free brewery could successfully pull off a delicious stout with flying colors? Glutenberg’s stout ($12.99, 4-packs) is refreshing yet robust, with aromas of chocolate and coffee followed by caramel flavors progressing through to the finish.

Glutenberg beers are available in 4-packs of 16-ounce cans at select Acme Fresh Market, Heinen’s, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Fisher’s Foods and Mustard Seed Market and Cafe locations, as well as your finer craft beer stops such as Lizardville and 101 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.
