Kent Revisited If I were to land in Kent today after not seeing the town for 50 years, I wouldn’t recognize the place.

but The Rathskeller was the name on the door. I worked there one day as a waiter and bartender when I was going to college. Fortunately, the next day I got a job offer from WKNT-FM radio, thus saving me from a life behind the bar. Woody’s burnt down a few years later under suspicious circumstances. Woody left town and nothing more was said.

My KSU High School class reunion was held in Kent

I lived east of town behind Carson’s, a bar and grill, which is still in existence. From there east was a gas station, and behind that and atop a very steep cut bank, there was a cemetery filled with late 1700s and 1800s graves. On the top of the hill across from the Methodist Church, my classmate Dolores Kline spent her summers selling produce from her family’s small farm. She’s very smart and probably got that way by reading books between customers. And, of course, the main KSU campus was just over that hill, spreading out like college campuses in the ‘30s and ‘40s: a bucolic mix of large trees and a lawn that seemed to stretch forever. Now that’s called the front campus.

last weekend, and I know there were people from my class who hadn’t been back to Kent for more than 50 years. We took a bus tour of the city and the KSU campus on Saturday, courtesy of Kent State University Alumni Association.

The bus took us all over the city (not a very long tour) and the university campus which has more than tripled in size since we all went there as high school freshmen. Our original school building, Franklin Hall, was beautifully restored in 2007, while the “new school” on Summit Street and Morris Road is now the University Bursar’s office. I once made a sales call on the university’s Continuing Education office for advertisements in our Akron Business Magazine. I sat in the very same room in which, 35 years earlier, I had studied history with Ms. Stewart. It was a strange experience.

The far reaches of campus today encompass the farm that my classmate Milt (Red) Ensinger’s family owned and worked all through our high school years. That farm is now Dix Stadium and a parking lot. When I was in high school in Kent, the university life began at Depeyster and Main streets. That’s where the sororities and fraternities were located in the big old Victorian houses that lined East Main Street. After that The Brady, a typical college soda shop of that era, sat on the corner of Main and Lincoln directly across from the KSU Gate. Very few high school kids went in there, instead opting for the delicious Sloppy Joes and the best brownies in the world at Haan’s Bakery next door. Across the street from The Brady was The Robin Hood restaurant where faculty and college upperclassmen dined; the restaurant’s white linen tablecloth service was its trademark.

The Kent Stage used to be the Kent Theater, the only movie house in town where first-run movies were shown. Across the street was the old Kent Hotel. I don’t remember anyone actually staying there; I think it was closed long before I got there, but in the basement my classmate Larry Durham opened his first bar called The Cove. He later moved it to Water Street. On that street, my classmate Sam Hannan’s father owned Cecil’s Dress Shop which catered to the locals, and my friend Vicky Yahner’s father’s dentist office was right next door.

Around the corner on Main Street was Purcel’s, a very exclusive (or at least, that’s how it seemed to this 15 year old) shop which carried all the latest clothes for the modern 1950s college man. Next door and against the railroad tracks was Woody’s, as it was known by the locals,

Last weekend, many of my classmates stayed in the recently completed KSU Hotel and ate at the restaurants along Acorn Alley. They strolled on the promenade lined with art that stretches all the way to the KSU campus. They marveled at the way so much has changed, and yet there were still enough remnants of old Kent that delighted those who could still remember.

Even though about 41 percent of our original class was accounted for, this may be the last reunion for us. Classmate and reunion chairwoman Linda Hurd Harvey vowed never again to raise her hand to volunteer for anything as she did at our last reunion. Lack of a volunteer to chair the next event is our new problem. Hopefully, someone will raise his or her hand.

This column has been a work from my memory; some of the events may or may not have happened. Locations may be different, although I did use a Kent map to check what my memory failed to recall. She is the daughter of our granddaughter Lauren and her husband, Josh. This makes Lucy our first great-grandchild. I love Lucy already.

>> Paul Thomarios is an entrepreneur who knows the sky’s the limit — literally. >> He took over the small painting business that his father, Nick, started in 1948 and expanded its services to include construction, building design and building restorations.

Over the years, Thomarios’ company has worked on projects nationally and around Akron, including the new Akron Children’s Hospital parking garage, the restoration of the Summit County Courthouse’s World War I Doughboy statue and the Apollo Saturn V moon rocket. Yes — even a rocket.

In 1996, Thomarios and his team were selected to restore the deteriorating Saturn V into a newly transformed artifact that millions of people now admire year

after year in the Smithsonian Institution at the Kennedy Space Center.

In his recent book, “The Final Journey of the Saturn V,” Thomarios, with co-author Andrew R. Thomas, captures his experience of renovating the Saturn V and invites readers to take a closer look into his personal life.

You’d often run your family’s painting business while your father spent his summers in Greece. What was your biggest challenge in those days?

PT: The biggest challenge was my age, but once the customers became comfortable with my knowledge of the business and my confidence level, the challenges were over.

When you took over the business in 1971, was it difficult to take the company to new levels?

PT: No. Hard work, drive and trust open many doors.

What’s the best business advice your father ever gave you?

PT: “You can only know a good captain in a stormy sea” and “Never quit.

When you quit, you’re dead.” They lose a little in the translation from Greek to English.

In 1996, your company restored the Saturn V Rocket for the Smithsonian. How did you get involved with that?

PT: It was a long process between the Smithsonian and the funding agency, Delaware North Corporation. NASA awarded the project to us in the last interview at the Kennedy Space Center.

How did you know your company could successfully complete a project of that size and importance?

PT: I wouldn’t go into something I knew I wouldn’t complete. If somebody asked me to build an automobile from scratch, I wouldn’t know how to do that. But I looked at the artifact as a big piece of aluminum that we have a lot of experience with.

The Saturn V is seen each year by 1.5 million visitors. How does that make you feel?

PT: If our company’s work inspires a couple of handfuls of kids to go on and make this world a better place, we achieved my goal.

Tell us about your book. Did you ever think you would be a published author?

PT: No. I owe a lot to the co-author, Dr. Andrew Thomas. We met in Tel Aviv, Israel, on an Akron business trip where he represented The University of Akron. We started talking about our backgrounds, and at that point in time, I think he had published 11 books. I told him about the Saturn V experience and that piqued his interest. We became very good friends in the course of the next three years, so we decided to write the book.

You dedicated the book to your family but you also wrote about your thirdgrade teacher, whose photo hangs in your office. Can you tell us about her?

PT: I attended Forest Hill Elementary School [in North Hill]. Miss Jean Hixson was, by far, the greatest educator I ever had. She was an Army pilot in World War II, the second woman to break the sound barrier in a jet aircraft in 1957, and one of the “Mercury 13.”

There were originally 13 astronauts selected for the Mercury program, and then NASA decided it was too dangerous for women. The women left the program, and seven men were left. It was quite a different day.

How did Miss Hixson influence you?

PT: Back then, my English was very broken so I was held back. She took an interest in me and saw something the other teachers didn’t.

She helped me go through learning English and tutored me on the side. I didn’t know she previously was an astronaut or a pilot. She stood out from the rest of the teachers.

Any advice for young entrepreneurs?

PT: Love what you do, work hard, never give up, and keep changing ahead of the rest. / Writer Samara Sands is a senior at KSU working on her bachelor’s in newspaper journalism.

It was raining hard when I left Pat Catan’s on West Market Street, and I had to be some kind of cold-hearted to drive past the woman in the wheelchair. One foot amputated, she was holding an umbrella in one hand and a cardboard sign in the other. “Need money for food and for help with Thanksgiving,” her sign read.

There was a man standing, sheltered by some trees, nearby — not right next to her, but close enough that I assumed they were together.

Like so many things in Northeast Ohio these days, it reminded me of “It’s a Wonderful Life” when Bedford Falls becomes Pottersville without George Bailey.

I cried as I drove by and still well up with tears as I recall the dreary scene that I cannot deny having witnessed.

For a number of reasons, I did not give her money. I did not swing by Acme to get her groceries, either. I second-guess my decision, even now.

Truth is, the whole cardboard sign phenomenon has been plaguing me, and I’m not quite sure what to do with it. I know people who bring bags of fast food or grocery gift cards to the all-too-prevalent beggars. My friend told me about a guy who carries bottles of water in his car just to pass out to people he encounters when he finds himself stopped in traffic near their haunts.

“Until they open their mouth or start asking, they are not panhandlers,” explains Lt. Rick Edwards, of the Akron Police Department. He says the city regulates panhandling and issues licenses – mostly to prevent panhandlers from creating traffic hazards or acting aggressively. Many other local municipalities have followed suit.

of cardboard sign holders and proactive in getting actual panhandlers off the streets.

Still, in Akron alone, the number of registered panhandlers has grown from 50 in 2007 to 307 in 2010 to 701 by September of this year.

I’ve talked with Rose Rose at Haven of Rest Ministries, a place which has been tremendously faithful about providing good food, a clean place to stay, clothing, spiritual counseling and job training to homeless people for many years. She says there’s no reason for anyone in Akron to go without a hot meal or a warm bed.

I’ve talked with a former government official who said many panhandlers use the money they get for drugs, some are mentally ill, and some are just scamming the system. One guy admitted he made $30,000 tax-free a few years back from standing on the street-corner begging.

Downtown Akron Partnership publishes information designed to educate the public about better ways to give. This organization’s website (downtownakron.com) lists more than a dozen local charities and agencies that help the needy.

Our family does donate to Haven of Rest and Salvation Army. But somehow, in light of the increasing number of people on the streets, that doesn’t seem like enough.

I used to avoid making eye contact with the people behind the cardboard signs. It was easier to put them out of my mind if I

didn’t see their faces. Instinctively, I knew that looking away let me off the hook.

Recently, I decided to quit looking away.

For some peculiar reason, I have come to believe that I need to be on the hook. I need to look them in the eye and read their signs. I need to see them as people.

Now I find myself wondering how they got there and if they’ll ever find a better way of life. I’ve toyed with trying to tell some of their stories on a blog of my own, “The Dignity Project: A look at the people behind the cardboard signs.”

It’s a complex problem, and I don’t know how to fix it. But I do know that something is wrong when able-bodied sign holders are willing to sell their dignity for such a little bit of other people’s money. And something is wrong when the rest of us just come to accept their plight as ‘normal,’ closing our eyes or gritting our teeth and then driving away.

No matter how much money we have, we’re all like the woman at Pat Catan’s. We all need help with thanks giving. / Writer Jane Day has interviewed celebrities and CEOs, politicians and homeless people.

Having Don Drumm on the cover of our November 2003 issue was very exciting for us.

Our cover story on The Family Drumm was an intimate look into this very artistic Akron family.

In 2003, the 100-year-old Botzum farmstead was getting ready for some much needed restoration. Today, the farmstead is a go-to place for weddings and receptions on a site that speaks of nature, home, family and traditional values.

Working Hard for a Working Farm Restoring the Botzum Farm in Cuyahoga Valley

O

ne hundred and sixty seven years ago, the John George Botzum family settled into the lush Cuyahoga Valley and established a homestead. They bought farmland that thrived and supported the family for one hundred years. But over the past decades, the land and buildings gradually fell into disuse and finally were sold. Then, in 1991, the National Park Service (NPS) took possession of the farm along with many others in the valley.

Riverview Road, just north of Bath Road. It is well secluded on a little plateau at the edge of verdant meadows stretching back to the tree line at the valley ridge. A north meadow runs out toward a notch in the green rolling hills where the Cuyahoga River flows down to Lake Erie and where sharpeyed hawks soar slowly about. Up the driveway and into the barnyard, you immediately get a glimpse back a hundred years into a tranquil, pastoral setting, isolated from the world.

Botzum helped dig millraces and other excavations until accumulating enough money to buy farmland at $2 per acre. The family prospered and contributed to building St. Vincent church. When the German-American community built St. Bernard church in 1905, the Botzums made that their church home. Each church has stained glass windows dedicated as Botzum memorials.

Now comes another Botzum back to the land. Five years ago, John George’s great-great granddaughter Maureen Winkelmann and husband George leased a portion of the old farm from the NPS. They are restoring this heritage treasure to share with the public.

Family history is still being compiled, but after arriving in the USA in 1836 from Germany, the Botzum couple and eight children squeezed into a log cabin near the corner of Bath and Riverview roads. Catherine Botzum— John’s wife—took in boarders and worked in wheat fields while Mr.

and sons worked the land, cut trees and split rails to make fences for their horses, sheep and pigs. In due course, the farm did well and the family took in weekly cash from fresh milk, cream and eggs shipped by canal to Akron and Cleveland. Around 1880, the family opened a community store, train station and post office at Bath and Riverview roads. The cluster of buildings and surrounding homes became known as Botzum Village.

In 1885, they built a small barn with a threshing floor to replace earlier log and lean-to structures. Ohio & Erie Canal boats near Lock 25—only a hundred yards to the north—dropped off barn lumber and supplies. The old driveway down from the farm originally Akron Life & Leisure

Not-So-Paltry Poultry / Lessons learned from a gaggle of gobblers /

As I crested the ridge and rounded the shallow pond, my trusty green lawn tractor – a $200 Craigslist find procured a few years ago – shuddered as it sent billows of smoke from the sooty, soiled mystery space below the mower deck. My eyes fell upon the woods beyond, where an unexpected sight awaited me: A gaggle of sleek gobblers, maybe a dozen or more, turned their waddle-weighted heads toward me, uttered a mumbled cry of surprise and took to the forest’s canopy on outstretched wings.

I didn’t know turkeys could fly. But, then again, there’s a boundless wealth of information related to outdoor-type activities that I am not in possession of, and I’ll be the first to admit that this suburban-raised writer who, up until recently, enjoyed the great outdoors from a white-picket square of space in Kent, Ohio, isn’t a prime candidate to stumble across a flock of wild turkeys.

It was a wild turkey that captured Benjamin Franklin’s fascination when, in a letter to his daughter, he declared the bird superior to the bald eagle on the United State crest, calling it “a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original Native of America. He is besides, though a little vain and silly, a bird of courage ...” Though it’s a cultural myth that Franklin publicly preferred the turkey to the bald eagle, it’s clear he had some respect for the silly bird.

[In fact, I haven’t stepped foot in Kent in well over a month, having relocated my citified self to a decidedly more rural part of the country, a place where party lines are drawn according to the emblem on the front bumper of your pickup truck. (I’m a Chevy.)]

But I refuse to own the full weight of my ignorance regarding the wing functionality of the wild turkey. Consider the bird thawing in your refrigerator, the one awaiting a brine, roast and starring role as the guest of honor at the Thanksgiving table. That broadbreasted butterball couldn’t fly, I can tell you that much. The ability to take flight, along with any semblance of grace while executing a simple walk across the yard, was bred out of commercial turkeys years ago. In fact, if you put your thawing bird (well, before he became yours – back when he had feathers and a head and all that) in with the flighty flock that surprised me, I’m not certain I’d identify them as a common species. >> So when, later that day, what I can only assume was the same group of avian trespassers showed up in my pasture, their cerulean knobs of wrinkly head flesh poking out from the overgrown grass, I took a good gander at the flock. What odd-looking creatures those 16

things are, more a patchwork of aesthetic choices than a cohesive image, like a first-year art student’s inaugural stab at a mixed media piece: a glob of primary colors plopped atop a large pile of spent charcoal, swatches of leopard-print fabric pasted randomly to the sides, a thrift store afghan flung onto the back, the whole mess propped up by a pair of dried tree branches.

But the bird has its charm, doesn’t it? I mean, this is what the pilgrims set on the table at the very first Thanksgiving, the main dish that set the standard for all holiday poultry

In the end, I wonder if the disrespect I feel for the wild turkeys wandering my acreage isn’t really a complicated case of projection on my part. By describing the gobblers as a hodge-podge of conflicting ideas, viewing them as hapless vagabonds somehow out of place in the unused pasture beside my house, am I really talking about myself, a city boy piecing together thoughts about country living I don’t fully understand yet, wandering the one-lane country roads of somebody else’s land? Am I jealous that these ugly fowl look more comfortable on my farm than I do?

Really I think I just wanted one of those birds on my dinner table, but, as I’m no hunter – the most potent weapon I own is a Daisy BB gun purchased at the embarrassingly late age of 36 – the flock was an animated example of my own futility, a glimpse at the long road I

must travel before my family’s Thanksgiving turkey makes the short trip from the back yard to the kitchen. The chasm between who I am and who I want to be.

But I’m a native son of Kentucky (albeit the commonwealth’s suburbs) – my claim to the bird is inherent, and I knew how to make it mine. A short drive in the Chevy later and I stood in the well-lit enclave of a retail establishment, a bottle in my hand and, on the bottle, an illustration of a particularly noble-looking wild turkey. The man behind the counter was talking about a three-day literature exam he’d just finished, a road I’ve walked down many times, and I realized I’m where I want to be, going where I want to go.

Maybe (definitely) I can’t put a wild turkey on our holiday table just yet, but I can put some Wild Turkey on our shelf, and that’s ok for now. 29th Medina Candlelight Walk Known as “America’s Hometown” and the “Sweetest Town in America”, the picturesque community of Medina celebrates its 29th Medina Candlelight Walk this month.

An hour later, the historic district turns into a glittering wonderland as over two miles of lights installed on historic rooftops and highlighting architectural details come to life around the Square.

Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center’s 10th Annual Butterfly Gala was held July 13 at the home of Chuck and Maria Farro in Richfield. With 430 guests in attendance, the event raised more than $160,000 for Stewart’s and will help the organization continue to offer its cancer support services free-of-charge.

This year’s event marked the 10th anniversary of the Butterfly Gala and was chaired by Stewart’s Caring Place board member Jeannine Marks and community member Marie Parker.

Marks organized the gala and opened her home for the event 10 years ago before Stewart’s Caring Place had a facility but was an idea of loved ones and friends of Dr. Stewart Surloff who passed away from lung cancer in 2001.

In honor of the organization’s anniversary, past gala hosts, presidents and board members were recognized at a gathering at the Farro home.

Guests enjoyed dinner by Beau’s Grille. The silent and oral auctions were led by WKYC’s Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling and Bob Hale of Benefit Auction Services.

The evening ended with a fireworks show sponsored by Sandusky Fireworks and the Lehner Family Foundation.

In the Youth category, the winner is Dana McKinney.

McKinney created, filmed and sold a video, “100 Ways to Laugh,” through the ALS Association; raised over $800 for Boston Marathon bombing victims in the “Bath Loves Boston” fundraiser; assembled and sent children’s care packages to other countries through Operation Christmas Child; and served on her middle and high school student councils to collect food and clothing for Summit County organizations.

Summit Artspace is hosting the Akron Area Arts Alliance’s (AAAA) 7th Arts Alive! Awards on Sun., Nov. 3.

AAAA was founded in 1991 by arts advocates Ann Amer Brennan and Mary Ann Jackson. The pair recognized the power in pooling resources and wisdom and asked artists and organizations in Greater Akron to join forces in a single, strong body focused on the future of art and culture in Northeast Ohio. Today, AAAA membership has grown to include 150 organizations, artists and supporters.

Gayle also donates time and funds to the annual scholarship drive and helps bestow summer-study scholarships to talented dancers who may otherwise be unable to participate in the prestigious national ballet programs for which they have been accepted.

It’s not often that two people can single-handedly be credited for bringing Akron-area arts to so many children who otherwise might not have the opportunity to either participate in the dance program or experience the joy of a live arts performance in their own community.

The Nobles deserve this recognition for their continued quest to bring the joy of dance to as many children as possible.

Lifetime Achievement

Mitchell Kahan Without the efforts of Mitchell Kahan, the Akron arts scene would paint a much different picture. Since his appointment as director of the Akron Art Museum in 1986, Kahan significantly impacted the city and cultural landscape.

Under his direction, the museum enjoyed significant institutional growth, including the 83,000-square-foot redesign and expansion which was headed by Viennese firm Coop Himmelb(l)au. The institution’s endowment grew from $2 million to $24 million and more than doubled the staff and number of objects in the museum’s permanent collection. In fact, Kahan raised almost $5 million in permanent

endowment funds for purchasing art. Upon his retirement in January 2013, he was elected director emeritus by the museum’s board of trustees.

As the Akron Art Museum’s longest-serving director, Kahan brought an impressive record of achievement to not only the museum’s 90-year history, but to the cultural arts in the region. Within the community, Kahan has actively cultivated relationships with other organizations and initiated collaborations with a wide variety of groups. He initiated the plan to secure the former Akron Press Building for use as a countywide art center — now Summit Artspace — and was a founding officer and president of the Akron Area Arts Alliance.

A native of Virginia, Kahan received his Ph.D. from City University of New York Graduate School. An art history student since his undergraduate days at the University of Virginia, he earned his master’s degree from Columbia University. He has received research fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has written and lectured extensively on 20th century American painting and folk art. He is co-author of the Akron Art Museum’s award-winning book, “Akron Art Museum: Art Since 1850, An Introduction to the Collection.” His professional experience includes a post as Curator of American and Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art (1982-86) and Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Alabama (1978-82).

Since first attending The University of Akron, Kurt Reed has been in love with the artistic culture of the Akron area.

Jacqueline Tinnemeyer is a rising star in Akron, serving the region by cultivating and supporting the next generation of arts and culture fans.

She consistently provides remarkable service to Greater Akron through her leadership, the donation of her time and energy and the passion she brings to the Northeast Ohio arts community.

He has always believed in the transformative power of music, and in 2007 he opened his own music school in Kent. Currently, Reed owns the Fairlawn and Hudson Schools of Music, serving individuals in the Greater Akron area. His businesses have used music to support a variety of nonprofit organizations, including the Akron Dog Park, Grief Care Place, Relay for Life and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

Reed’s schools regularly host recital performances and rock shows at local venues to encourage the community to support young, local musicians. In April 2013, his businesses hosted “Rock for a Good Cause,” allowing students to see how their performances can impact the community in a positive way. In its first year, the event raised nearly $800 for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Aside from offering superior music instruction, Reed’s goal is to allow musicians to make a living doing what they love by teaching with him, allowing them to stay in the Akron area rather than traveling to a larger city in pursuit of their musical dreams.

Reed has shown ongoing dedication to the Akron area and continues to build an active community of musicians who are excited to call the city home for years to come.

Currently on staff at Old Trail School in Bath, Tinnemeyer spends her free time in service to organizations including the Akron Art Museum, Blossom Music Center, Downtown Akron Partnership, Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce, Junior League of Akron, Young Professionals, Wadsworth Young Professionals and Summit County Historical Society.

Since 2010, Tinnemeye, an enthusiastic promoter and advocate for the arts, has served as chair of ArtCetera, the Akron Area Arts Alliance’s organization for young professionals with a passion for the arts. She has led the organization’s transformation into an active group that exposes Akron’s young leaders to the importance of attending, volunteering for and supporting artistic venues. Through her work, she has spearheaded bringing arts and cultural experiences to younger audiences through social programming including events held at local theaters, art galleries and other area nonprofits.

“The Rite of Spring” – Akron Symphony Orchestra/GroundWorks DanceTheater To mark the 100th anniversary of the first staging of Stravinsky’s controversial ballet, “The Rite of Spring,” Akron Symphony Orchestra Music Director Christopher Wilkins approached David Shimotakahara, artistic director of GroundWorks DanceTheater, with an idea for an exciting collaborative performance.

The project brought together 100 musicians and 23 professional and student dancers for the Akron Symphony’s first full-scale production of a classical concert involving dance.

Outstanding Visual Artist

Dorothea Barlowe An internationally recognized nature illustrator, Dorothea “Dot” Barlowe continues to create and publish new work at age 87.

Her work as an artist, both alone and with husband Sy, has become part of many people’s lives — helping to introduce nature to generations of Americans. While many people have eased into retirement, Barlowe is still at work, celebrating beauty in nature-themed coloring books, stickers and bookmarks for Dover Publications — published works that are sold around the world, making her art accessible to the planet.

Barlowe began her career in the 1940s, working at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City after studies at Cooper Union and Columbia University. As a highly successful freelance illustrator, her work has appeared in numerous books, magazines, newspapers and scientific journals throughout the world. Having written and illustrated the acclaimed book “Illustrating Nature,” she was an instructor at the Parsons School of Design, where she taught courses on how to illustrate nature and botany.

During her long career, Barlowe has worked for many of the largest publishing companies in the United States and her artwork has been featured in American Artist magazine.

To build the dance company, Shimotakahara went into schools and dance programs to audition more than 100 students with a range of experience. Eventually, 15 students were chosen to join eight professional dancers on the E.J. Thomas Hall stage. Leading to the performance, the Akron Symphony and GroundWorks produced outreach videos and conducted workshops that focused on the interplay between instrumental music and dance. Area students were also invited to E.J. Thomas Hall to watch the dress rehearsal, where they had an opportunity to listen to and speak with Shimotakahara and Wilkins.

“The Rite of Spring” drew the largest Classics Series audience of the season and has encouraged future collaborations. The next day, the outreach effort continued as the musicians of the Akron Symphony traveled to Medina to perform a special community concert. The ensemble, without dancers, revisited “The Rite of Spring” – donating their time and performance fees. The Medina concert was part of an ongoing relationship with the city, resulting in more appearances at the Medina Performing Arts Center – expanding audiences, building relationships and exposing new groups of people to classical music.

Arts Educator

Andrea Shearer As an associate professor of dance and director of the dance division at The Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance, Andrea Shearer has worked to insure that each of her students reaches his or her potential.

She developed Kent State’s Dance Education major curriculum as it now exists, and she continues to oversee internships and student teaching placements throughout Northeast Ohio. Shearer understands the need to educate audiences as well as students, creating a visual display for audiences and offering pre-performance commentary.

The Kent dance program achieved accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Dance under Shearer’s leadership, and she’s led several successful Dance Education program reviews by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Shearer has a continuing role as coordinator for dance in Kent State’s Master of Arts Teaching (MAT) program, which enables graduates to get a MAT degree with one year of intensive study.

Shearer holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master of arts degree from the University of Michigan. She previously taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and performed professionally with DanceCircus, Milwaukee’s modern dance repertory company. She has taught, choreographed and performed ballet, modern, sacred, swing and contra dance across the United States.

As artistic director of Kent State’s Faculty Concerts and associate director of Leaven Dance Company, Shearer has created 50 original works.

Her scholarly research has included intensive work in the area of kinesthetic intelligences. Shearer’s students have gone on to have careers as professional dancers and dance educators.

Docs Who Rock – United Way of Summit County/The University of Akron Now it its 10th year, Docs Who Rock has become one of the region’s “must-see” annual musical events. Created and produced by United Way of Summit County and hosted by The University of Akron at E.J. Thomas Hall, the show allows community physicians to showcase their musical talents.

Each year, a show is assembled that features 10 or 11 musical acts ranging from solos to full bands with as many as 15 musicians. The acts perform a variety of musical styles, including rock, classical, pop and bluegrass, and every entry has at least one medical doctor who lives or practices in Summit County. Retired cardiologist and renowned humanitarian Dr. Terry Gordon serves as Master of Ceremonies and adds his unique style to the evening.

Docs Who Rock is a true collaboration that results in an outstanding and entertaining event that allows doctors to have a little bit of fun showcasing their less formal sides. The performances are taken very seriously, and the resulting shows have drawn an average of 1,200 people and raised more than $100,000 for United Way of Summit County, helping to improve lives over the past decade. Sponsorship from The University of Akron makes it possible to host the event on the worldclass E.J. Thomas stage, adding to the overall experience for musicians and audience.

Joan Colbert Presenting Joan Colbert with the award for Arts Volunteer is an honor that’s near and dear to the heart of the Akron Area Arts Alliance and Summit Artspace. Colbert has been the longtime gallery coordinator for the community art center, bringing together the gallery committee, selecting artists for shows and installing exhibits while establishing Summit Artspace as one of the region’s most exciting gallery experiences.

She currently has a studio, along with other local artists, on the third floor of Summit Artspace.

Colbert is a graduate of The University of Akron. She paints, exhibits her work and has won numerous awards in both juried shows and art festivals. In 2005, she was honored with the Outstanding Visual Artist award presented at the biennial Arts Alive! by the Akron Area Arts Alliance. The Akron-Summit County Public Library owns work commissioned for new branch libraries (most recently, the North Hill branch), and she was the First Night Akron 2001 button designer. Her previous experience includes graphic work for both the City of Akron and the Akron-Summit County Public Library. She continues to do freelance illustration and promotions.

Black Stallion Winery Napa, California

The Black Stallion Winery is located in the Oak Knoll District along Napa’s famous Silverado Trail.

The trail started out as a track made by wildlife and then became a Native American trail; in 1852, it became a permanent road between Napa and Calistoga. Twenty years later, there was a silver mine claim on Mount St. Helena which gave rise to an influx of miners who established Silverado City. In its prime, the city had a population of 1,500 and then dwindled as the mine was depleted. If you look around, the name Silverado is well established in the Napa Valley.

The Black Stallion Estate Winery takes its name from the Silverado Horseman’s Center, an equestrian center built on the winery grounds back in 1950s. The center featured riding trails, stables and the only lighted outdoor arena in the region, which could seat over 3,000 spectators. The horses are long gone, but remnants of the original stalls are still visible on the stone walls of the Black Stallion cellar.

Black Stallion winery selects grapes for its Chardonnay from the Yountville, Carneros and Napa’s Oak Knoll grape-growing regions. Its winemaker says the grapes like the southerly locations in the Napa Valley because the cooler climate produces bright fruits and crisp acidity. He also states the vintage offers aromas of lemon zest and green apple with creamy notes of crème brûlée and butterscotch.

The Chardonnay is round on the palate with flavors of citrus, brown butter, pear and flint. It’s a wine with bright fruit flavor and a long, elegant finish. Black Stallion Estate Winery Chardonnay is a wonderful aperitif, just perfect for sipping on its own.

Curious Curry tastes the Basil Stir-fry Pork In theory, this sounds like a wonderful dish: fresh basil, tender pork and vegetables in a spicy sauce. But like most theories, this one might need some fine-tuning. While everything was cooked nicely, the large basil leaves were too much for my palette, and eventually all I could taste was basil-y meat. Next time, I’ll skip the herbs and stick to other curries.

Purple Haze tastes the Asparagus Stir-fry I love asparagus, so this stirfry was right up my alley. The dish features red bell peppers, mushrooms and, of course, asparagus. I ordered mine with chicken, and the pieces were huge. With some white rice and the mild wine sauce, this dish was made for me. Needless to say, I cleaned my plate pretty quickly.

This restaurant’s servers are very knowledgeable when it comes to gluten-free preparation. I typically order the Pad Thai, an entrée of rice noodles, bean sprouts, egg, chicken and shrimp, topped with crunchy peanuts and a lime wedge. I always start off thinking that I’ll save some for later, but my willpower is no match against the salty, sweet sauce.

Saucy Broad tastes the Red Curry Gilded elephants and goddesses and effervescent tile backsplashes set the mood for spicy Red Curry, a Thai staple. The sauce, a brilliant shimmering orange, had a perfect spice level that was counterbalanced with sweet, smooth coconut milk. Bamboo shoots, onions, peppers and carrots maintained their snap swimming in an abundant vermilion pond.

Just Joe tastes the Mango Chicken Chicken, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms and onion were stir-fried in a savory brown

sauce that paired nicely with the sweet and tangy flavors of fresh mango. The chicken was tender and moist, and the dish as a whole was pretty tasty. However, I felt it would’ve been better with a little bit of spice.

The only way to improve the dish is to add avocado because, really, what doesn’t avocado make better? Be sure to add it, and then be super glad that you did. You can feel free to thank me.

While initially established in 1913, the original Mission Brewery closed its doors during Prohibition, and many thought it would be lost forever. As luck would have it for the short-lived brewery, its namesake was revived in 2007 when it was finally reopened to much acclaim. Cameos of Caring is an award program which recognizes nurses in Summit County and the surrounding region and celebrates nursing excellence.

This program highlights the nurses’ contributions to the profession and the ongoing passionate care they give to their patients.

Since the first gala in 2002, more than $250,000 has been raised to support a nursing scholarship at The University of Akron. This scholarship gives

nursing students the opportunity to pursue their education without having to worry about costs.

The program was modeled after The University of Pittsburgh’s successful Cameos of Caring program.

The 12th annual Cameos of Caring gala, held Oct. 19 at The University of Akron Student Union, recognized 16 nurses from local hospitals for their outstanding care and treatment of patients, families and their communities.

2013 Cameos of Caring Recipients Holly Mohn Affinity Medical Center RN in Cardiovascular ICU Honors and Awards: Critical Care Registered Nurse Certification On supporting patients: Mohn’s supervisors say she has excellent clinical instincts and is able to cope with critical issues with composure and flexibility.

She demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills when dealing with patients, families and staff, and she has received a number of cards praising her on her excellent care. She also displays the highest ethical standards. “Holly is always willing to go above and beyond,” says Critical Care Services Director Susan Kress.

“She is the ultimate patient advocate, she is kind and compassionate, and she collaborates well with other members of the health care team to provide exceptional care.”

On being a leader: Mohn’s peers say she is a leader and a mentor to new employees. She works with new nurses and helps in their journey to become an expert. She’s also completed the first phase of the GEM program, the clinical ladder program at the hospital, while working toward her dream of becoming a

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. “She’s always looking for ways to increase her knowledge to provide the best care,” says Kress. “To say her patients and their families love her is an understatement. She demonstrates all of the qualities of a professional nurse.”

Nursing is an art; it integrates science and care. Maintain high standards, ethical principles and professionalism. We are all in this together, providing care for those that need it the most.”

On going above and beyond: “It’s an exciting time to be a nurse. We’re being asked to practice to the fullest extent of our education and training. That means we have to step out of our comfort zone and learn new ways of doing things, new ways to advocate for our patients, new ways to lead the change in the healthcare environment today. I conduct research, find the best evidence to support change in practice, and conduct quality improvement to assure the safest care. Our roles are changing, and we need to emerge as leaders. I accept the challenge.”

On making a difference: Celik coordinated a program called Akron iSee, which serves 88 school district students who failed the school vision screening. “School nursing is teaching, being a surrogate mother, counseling, being a child advocate. You never know what to expect or what kind of challenge you will face, and each encounter has the potential to make a difference in a child’s life. Always remember why you became a nurse. The most important person in this whole process is the child (or patient) and what’s best for them — that’s why you’re a nurse.”

On passion: “The most memorable patients are the ones that give you hope. I feel very blessed and proud to be a nurse. Not only do we have the ability to save lives, we change lives. I’m currently working on my master’s degree because I feel strongly about advancing nursing as a profession. Caring for dementia patients holds a special place in my heart. In hopes to improve care and optimize quality of life for both patients and nurses, I am conducting research about relationship qualities between nurses and dementia patients.”

I encountered firsthand what a nurse was: a caregiver, a teacher, a nurturer, and ultimately, a role model. As I embarked on my path in schooling, I was continually interested not only in understanding the science of disease processes and medicine, but the art of how to care for the patient at the bedside.”

One day she was feeling particularly terrible, and I stayed over late that night trying to make her feel as calm and comfortable as possible. It turned 56

On educating others: “I became a nurse because I wanted to help others and make a difference in other’s lives. The nursing profession gives me the opportunity to provide holistic care in which I am able to impact a patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. My wife was a nurse and helped convince me that nursing was a good fit for me. The best part of my job is when former patients come back to visit and say ‘thank you’ for the care they received.”

On helping people: “I was involved in the care of a particular patient that underwent a long and difficult surgery. He remained in critical condition for an extended period of time. He endured many setbacks but after several weeks was stable enough to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility. Within another couple of weeks he was discharged home. The patient and his family were very grateful for the care he received, and they felt his remarkable recovery was due in large part to the care he received while in my unit. I’m proud to be part of a profession that’s consistently ranked as one of the most trusted and respected at a national level.”

On coming to work: “I truly love my job.

I’m proud to be a nurse, and I’m one of those people who don’t mind coming to work. I just

On working in cardio: “One of the joys of working in cardio-pulmonary rehab is watching the patient evolve; they come to you weak and anxious to tell their story. While working with them and listening to them, you develop with them their individualized treatment. You then begin to witness them slowly transform back to health and their activities of daily living. I get to be involved with the patient who has received a lung or heart, so it’s been the silver lining in the cloud — to truly see and work with the patient who has received this

On positivity: “Early in my career as a registered nurse, I cared for a young woman with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was always cheerful and could light up the room with her smile. Even through all of her pain and inability to do even simple tasks because of her contractures and swollen joints, she never complained or became negative. She died at a very young age but was an inspiration through her faith and courage.”

On the evolution of nursing: “Nursing and the medical fields are always changing, hopefully improving. Computers and all the technology seem to make nursing more challenging to have hands-on and bedside interaction with patients. New healthcare laws will make our commitment to patients and families even more demanding in the future.”

National Achievement Local nurse recognized for longtime research on osteoporosis.

On saving a life: “On Thanksgiving 2012, I had a memorable patient who had an order to be discharged. The family voiced great concern, and after reassessing the patient, I insisted the patient not be discharged and that further testing was needed. The patient was found to have a gangrenous gallbladder and was sent to surgery. The patient and family still keep in contact and thank me for ‘saving his life.’ There’s no greater feeling than to know you made a true difference, not only in the patient’s life, but the family’s as well.”

On family support: “The two loves in my life are nursing and my family. I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today without them. They’ve always supported me and would never let me give up. My sisters always believed in me and helped me survive and flourish throughout the years. My wonderful husband is still the love of my life after 16 years and forgives me for all my flaws, and [I have] the two most beautiful boys in the world: Liam and Logan. They are my life, my world, my heart.”

For Margaret O’Bryan Doheny, nursing has always been her passion — one which stemmed from her mother who was a nurse and a great role model.

Doheny, professor emeritus who was on the Kent State University College of Nursing faculty for 35 years, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing on Oct. 19, in Washington, D.C. “I was attracted to academic nursing as a way to combine my research and strong desire to

take my clinical knowledge and work with students to educate and nurture them into professional nursing,” she says.

This year, Doheny decided to apply for the American Academy of Nursing, which serves the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis and dissemination of nursing knowledge.

Over the last 20 years, Doheny’s research has focused on osteoporosis risk behaviors and

health promoting interventions in both men and post-menopausal women 50 years of age and older.

“I wanted to continue my work with osteoporosis prevention, and as a member of the Academy, I will have great opportunities to affect health policy on a national level,” she says.

Doheny says her research has served as a foundation and contributed to a more widely recognized disparity issue of osteoporosis prevention screening and testing in men.

“I hope that my research will continue to shape health policy related to osteoporosis and provide evidence to people to recognize it is a problem not only in the aging population but is considered a pediatric disease that can be prevented,” she says.

When Doheny learned that her Academy application was accepted, she joined the organization’s 2,100 members who are the nursing field’s most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research.

“It was a thrilling sense of success that my peers were recognizing my accomplishments on a national basis,” she says. “I was able to showcase my research trajectory to bring more recognition of the problem.”

Even though she recently retired, Doheny is actively involved in both the academic and nursing field. She also participates in the American Nurses Association, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses, National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) Nursing Advisory Board and the NOF Fracture Liaison Service Curriculum Committee.

Although she’s had many career highlights, she says it’s most rewarding to see the outcomes of her research and treatment techniques coming into the mainstream with consumers.

Teaching, she says, has also brought many rewards.

“I am always thrilled when I run into former students, and they tell me ‘thank you,’ “ she says.

Over the years, Doheny has acquired much knowledge to pass on to current and future nursing students.

“Nursing is a wonderful, caring profession, but it’s hard work that uses critical thinking in decision-making and evidence-based practice,” she says. “Pursuing a degree in nursing is academically challenging, so [nursing students] will need to study hard and keep updated in nursing education so they’re competent practitioners in the care they will be providing.” / Writer Caitlyn Callahan is a senior at KSU working on her bachelor’s in magazine journalism.

ART Group Ten Gallery Kent’s newly-formed artists’ cooperative, Group Ten Gallery, is an ensemble of ten artists from Kent and the surrounding area whose art encompasses a broad range of mediums and styles, from the representational to the abstract, and with an emphasis on the two-dimensional arts of painting, drawing, and collage. The gallery is located at 138 Main Street in Kent with the main entrance off the alleyway at the rear of the building.

The artists of Group Ten are Ben Bassham, Debrah Butler, Jeff Fauser, Judy Gaiser, Jim Gundlach, Linda Hutchison, Fran Lehnert, Thompson Lehnert, Jance Lentz, Geoff Mowery, and John Smolko. The brainchild of Joan and Ron Burbick, the developer of Acorn Alley and the Acorn Corner (the former Franklin Hotel), Group Ten Gallery adds a colorful new dimension to the already rich mix of great things in Kent.

The Kent Stage Constructed in 1927 as a silent movie and vaudevillian theater and is the sole surviving downtown theater in the county. In 2002, the Western Reserve Folk Arts Association took over management of the venue and the rest is history. The bands love performing at such a music friendly venue and patrons love the fact that the music starts at 7 p.m., allowing them to take in a whole night of music and still be home at a reasonable hour.

On Wednesday nights, the Water Street Tavern presents some the area’s best blues performers, including Colin John, the Numbers Band, the Wanda Hunt and Ian Penter. Larry Sterpka plays every the tavern Mondays at 5:30 p.m., and the DanJo Jazz Orchestra plays Tuesday evenings.

Whether there’s been a death in the family and you need help managing your inheritance, or you’re changing jobs and aren’t sure how to handle your 401(k) from your previous employer — you may feel stuck in a financial rut.

That’s when a financial planner can step in and help you out of it. But knowing what to look for in a financial planner is just as important as getting the help in the first place.

One of the best ways to find a financial planner you can trust, Hurst says, is to do it the old-fashioned way: Ask family and friends for referrals. If they’ve had positive experiences with someone, then that’s your best option.

Jesse W. Hurst II, Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and co-founder of the Millennial Group, says most people turn to financial planners because of a major trigger or event in their lives.

“Most people generally come to us with a big question or concern,” he says. “Very few people come to us the first time just because they’ve been sitting around saying ‘Gee, I think I need to see a financial planner.’ ” If you have a financial concern, Hurst says the first thing you should do is seek a financial planner, but not just any financial planner will do. Look for those who have an “advanced designation” like a CFP, the primary designation for the financial planning industry.

“There are some Certified Public Accountants that do financial planning,” he says. “And there are also some insurancebased advisers that do financial planning, and they typically have a designation called a Charter Financial Consultant.”

You also want to make sure the financial planner’s area of specialty will address your specific financial needs.

“At Millennial Group, we specialize in helping corporate people,” he says. “We help people plan for a successful retirement and help them manage their investments to get there. So if somebody came to us and said, ‘I need help with putting in a health insur86

FINRA.org) provides information about financial advisers, including their background. You can also see if any complaints have been made about a particular financial adviser.

“And again, just because a complaint has been lodged doesn’t mean it was valid or that they’re a bad person,” Hurst says. “It might just mean that there was a misunderstanding, and you’d want to talk to them about how it got resolved.”

Preparing for your first meeting with your financial planner is also important. Hurst says you should always bring any necessary documents, as well as any questions you may have.

“One of the things that we do at our office is send out a list of documents needed to our clients or proposed clients before the meeting,” he says. “For example, we’ll tell them to bring copies of pay stubs, any investment statements and copies of any corporate benefit plans such as their 401(k) statement or any pension.”

Although the first meeting with your financial planner may be intimidating and you may not be sure what details to provide, Hurst suggests that you think about it like a visit to the doctor’s office.

“The better information you give to the doctor, the better the diagnosis is going to be,” he says. “This will be no different than that. The more information you’re able to give that adviser, the better advice the adviser is going to give you.”

One of the first things a financial planner should do is find out their client’s biggest questions, concerns and fears, Hurst says.

“A good financial adviser is going to want to understand the client and what the client needs before he or she starts trying to solve problems,” he says. “How can I tell you what you should be doing if I don’t know who you are and what you’re trying to solve first?”

Not only is it important for you to find a financial planner with the right qualifications, you also should find one who you feel comfortable talking to — and most of all, who you feel you can trust.

he city of Barberton is a diverse community with many exciting and interesting opportunities. During the summer, free concerts fill the evening air with music at Lake Anna, and we have some of the finest festivals in Summit County: the Cherry Blossom in May, followed by the Arts and Crafts Festival in July, the Labor Day Festival, as well as the Mum Festival in late September.

In addition, Barberton offers many exciting recreational programs throughout the year to provide the community with enjoyable, healthy, enriching physical activities. From summer camps for youth to bingo for senior citizens, the Parks and Recreation Commission’s desire is to provide opportunities for all age groups to grow socially, physically and emotionally.

For our senior adults, the Active Adult Center is located in the Lake Anna YMCA. In addition to bingo, senior citizens can come to enjoy billiards, arts and crafts and many more exciting activities. Speaking of the YMCA, it’s a state-of-the-art $9.6 million facility that opened in December 2007. It’s located northeast of Lake Anna.

Created in 1996, the Barberton Community Foundation has made more than $60 million in grants to the city, schools and nonprofit agencies serving Barberton. It has also awarded more than $7 million in college scholarships.

Speaking of education, the Barberton City Schools recently earned a rating of “Excellent” from the state of Ohio, definitely a milestone moment for the hard-working students, parents, teachers and administrators of our district.

The Barberton Schools have recently completed some major construction projects. A brand new central middle school opened in the fall of 2011 across the street from our beautiful high school.

U.L. Light Middle School was renovated and became an elementary building, and a new elementary was built on the West Side.

In addition, post-secondary opportunities now abound in Barberton with The University of Akron and Stark State University both offering courses here.

Enrollment continues to grow at an amazing rate.

Barberton’s downtown, adjacent to the 14-acre Lake Anna Park, consists of a live children’s theater, a first-run movie theater, many restaurants and local businesses.

Since Barberton’s founding in 1891 by noted industrialist Ohio Columbus Barber, Barberton has been an innovative community in industry and new technology. This spirit of innovation continues to thrive. ocated in southern Summit County, Ohio, Coventry Township is a community surrounded by the lakes making up Portage Lakes State Park with a population of approximately 10,900 residents.

As settlers came, the land was farmed and mills were built to utilize the power of the water. In the 1820s, the Ohio and Erie Canal changed the economy and lifestyle of the early settlers. The canal became a major mode of transportation, thus opening up markets far and wide for the

Coventry Township is on the natural watershed divide across the United States, the point where water flows north toward Lake Erie or south toward the Ohio River. The glaciers that covered this area many, many years ago left behind a group of lakes, an abundance of plant life, and all the essentials to promote wildlife. These acts of nature are a very significant part of our local history.

The Native American Indians knew this area well and considered it to be a neutral territory for most tribes.

Travel by canoe was the prime form of transportation. The main path of travel was from the great Lake Erie to the mighty Ohio River, accomplished by leaving Lake Erie going south, upstream, against the current on the Cuyahoga River to its southern point, where the canoe had to be “portaged,” or carried, across land to reach another body of water to continue south.

When the white settlers discovered this area, they knew it was of great significance to the Indians. This natural dividing line was used in treaties to divide the Indian nations from the states. The first whites to settle within the territory that’s now Coventry Township arrived in 1806. The Western Reserve had been formed, and the Connecticut Land Company had classified Coventry as an

he village of Clinton has a population of approximately 3,000 people and is located 13 miles north of Massillon. Clinton was laid out and recorded in 1826, three months earlier than her sister village of Canal Fulton. Clinton was incorporated in 1904.

crops and products of these early settlers.

The canal system needed a steady, ample flow of water to fill the new channels that would generally follow the north/south route that the Indians knew so well. The original waterways would remain, but this new canal system would require more water flow. The natural lakes that existed at the summit of the great divide would be modified to supply this water, thus comprising the Portage Lakes that we know today.

the village experienced a “canal boom” up until the 1913 flood, which washed out the locks. A “gas boom” occurred in 1927, when the Bottler gas well was drilled on what’s now the Schilling farm.

It was the first of several oil fields in this part of Ohio that became productive and are owned by East Ohio Gas. The citizens are proud of Clinton’s two long-standing traditions: the annual Memorial Day Parade and the annual Clinton High School Alumni Association

The canal system lost its esteem over the years as other modes of transportation developed, but the water supply was of importance in the industrial development of the area until the great flood of 1913 wiped out the system, ending the canal era.

The Coventry area was mostly farmland, and cranberries were abundant near the lakes. Coal mining was a major business in the mid-1820s. As the general area became more populated, the lake area became a haven for recreation.

Elite families from local cities made their summer homes at the Portage Lakes. Homes were built in the lakes area, and during the Great Depression era, many families made their lake cottages into year-round homes. The township government that had started around 1806 continued to provide the organization that a growing township needed in the 1900s.

Originally Coventry Township included the Summit Lake area and the Rolling Acres Mall area, with the southern end of the Portage Path being near the center of the township. But over the years, large tracts of township land were annexed to the cities of Akron and Barberton. In 1995, after seven years of negotiations by township trustees, Coventry voters passed a historic agreement with the City of Akron and became the first township in the United States to stop annexation.

Today, the same natural waterways that the Indians traveled are still the center of activity for the residents and visitors to Portage Lakes. The local government, the excellent school system and the natural beauty of the area continue the rich history of Coventry Township into the 21st century.

Banquet. The village has celebrated with a Memorial Day Parade every year since the end of the Civil War in 1868, and the Clinton High School graduates (18941957) have been meeting to enjoy a meal and socializing the second Saturday in June since 1906. After consolidating with the Canal Fulton school district to create Northwest, adding numbers to this alumni group came to an end. However, two of the younger members have agreed to continue the tradition.

The Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park in Clinton, Ohio is dedicated to honoring Ohio’s heroes from all branches of service during all wars and in peace.

Our goal is to HONOR all of our heroes and their families, REMEMBER the sacrifices made to ensure the liberties of our nation and to CELEBRATE the lives of our heroes and our own lives that we are afforded due to their sacrifices.

The park is funded entirely by private donations. Funding has been provided by individuals, companies, civic organizations, churches, towns, cities and others who wish to say thank you to Ohio’s heroes.

The park is located in small, historic Clinton, Ohio at 8005 Cleveland-Massillon Road (40 minutes south of Cleveland).

The small country setting provides a serene and quiet backdrop for this memorial. The Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park never closes, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days per year.

The park is lit at night and we encourage you to visit the park after the sun has set.

There is something surreal about the park at night.

Norton

T

he City of Norton has a large, rentable Community Center, as well as 10 beautiful public parks within its borders for residents to enjoy.

The following seven parks are owned and maintained by the city: Columbia Woods Park, Frashure Park, Helmick Park, Holiday Heights Park, Loyal Oak Community Park, Williams Memorial Park and Williams Peace Park. McCafferty Park is a city of Barberton park located within Norton borders. Silver Creek Metro Park, part of the Metro Parks, serving Summit County, is also located within the city, offering amenities such as a swimming beach, hiking trails and horse trails. Families are also known to visit the commercial Loyal Oak Lake Park for summertime swimming and beach fun.

The city also supports a summer recreation program that provides children with a wide assortment of activities. Organized youth baseball, football/cheerleading and soccer are highly active in the city. The website, www.nortonyouthsports.com, started as a service to the community in January 2007, and it’s a great source for information on a variety of Norton Youth Sports organizations.

The Norton School system enjoys a highly rated academic report, as well as

New Franklin

he city of New Franklin (of nearly 27 square miles and founded as Franklin Township in 1817) is located on the southern edge of Summit County and has a population of about 15,000 people.

City Parks Lakeside Park is located off South Turkeyfoot Road at Map Drive on twotenths of an acre. The park consists of a basketball court and a 1/8-mile walking trail. George Sisler Memorial Baseball Park, situated on 11 acres of land next to the Manchester Middle School on West Nimisila Road, is named in honor of Manchester’s George H. Sisler, the

extremely supportive sport and band parental groups.

The DARE program and Safety Town are actively supported within the Norton school system. Norton also enjoys the support of many community service clubs, such as the Norton Kiwanis, the Norton Women’s Club, the Lions Club, the Norton Historical Society and various garden clubs. Boy Scouts/ Girl Scouts and 4-H are also active within the city. Norton residents rely on several newspaper sources such as the daily Akron Beacon Journal, and the weekly Barberton Herald, the West Side Leader and The Norton Post Newspaper.

Norton is popular not only for its quality of life, but also for its easy accessibility to major cities. With access to an active railroad line and with 12 miles of interstate intersecting the city via I-76/ U.S. Route 224, as well as state routes 21, 261 and 585, it’s quite easy to get around.

At about 23 square miles of territory, the city offers a large expanse of land with a large-lot housing environment, but also enjoys many retail stores and manufacturing companies, and is home to two international headquarters.

One of the largest attended events in Norton is the annual Cider Festival in late September, organized by a private committee and sponsored by 10th inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Miracle Field is located adjacent to the City Hall. Rawlins Park and Maple Grove Park consist of undeveloped green and wetland spaces.

Area Attractions Ohio & Erie Towpath Canal Trail has about three miles of trail through New Franklin, starting between Snyder Avenue in Barberton and ending before North Street in Clinton. The Towpath Trail is under the authority of the MetroParks, Serving Summit County.

The Portage Lakes State Park, at 5031 Manchester Road, a Division of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources,

the Lions Club. Begun in 1988 by the Lions Club in the historic Loyal Oak area, it spread throughout the Loyal Oak neighborhood. Streets were closed during this special weekend to make room for the hundreds of visitors from neighboring communities. In 2008, the festival’s 20th year, the festival moved to Columbia Woods Park at 4060 Columbia Woods Drive. The larger and idyllic park surroundings will accommodate the growing crowds and provides more room to expand and enhance the festival for even more cider tasting and apple delicacies, games, rides, exhibits, contests, a gazebo for the concerts and, of course, the traditional gobbling up of the pancakes at the Boy Scout Troop 132’s pancake breakfast held before and after the festival’s kick off parade through the middle of town. As the city logo indicates: Come to Norton, a Growing Community.

Winter recreation on the lakes consists of cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice boating. The annual Portage Lakes Fireworks display, which draws more than 50,000 people, can be viewed best from the beaches of Turkeyfoot Lake.

Franklin Park Civic Center Tudor House is a beautiful 20-room, two-story mansion that sits on 5.8 acres, adjacent to the Portage Lakes State Park, with frontage on the west shore of Turkeyfoot Lake.

The Tudor House and grounds may be rented for weddings, receptions, showers, graduations and private parties.
