Up, Up and Away!

No Place Like Home Here are Akronites visiting sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. We visited the Puerto Rican capital during the first week of July and experienced the Caribbean heat and humidity.

While enjoying Puerto Rican culture, we made sure to bring Akron along with us!

We had a great time and would love to go back one day. However, nowhere can replace Akron!

In early September, my family and I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a ride on The Despicablimp, a 165-footlong blimp decaled like a Minion from the “Despicable Me” movies. The blimp, piloted

by Captain Allan Judd, has been seen all over the U.S. since March, with Universal Studios representatives and costumed Minions promoting the movies on the ground.

My children, Hayley and Matthew, my husband, Aron, and I enjoyed our early morning hour-long ride over Akron, and we were able to point out specific landmarks like the Y Bridge, the Hoban and University of Akron football stadiums, and E.J. Thomas Hall.

And, we were pleased to see that Jerry the Minion enjoys reading Akron Life magazine too!

Trick and Treat Halloween is not the wild holiday it used to be. Thank goodness.

The emphasis seemed to be more on trick than treat when I was young. Living in Kent my friend Jimmy and I could cover most of the town on Halloween and bring in quite a haul of candy, cookies and fruit. We usually started out as early as 5 p.m., and by around 8 p.m., we had a pillowcase full of goodies.

We soaped a number of windows and rattled our homemade noise makers on most of the windows we could reach (built from a wooden thread spool notched on all edges, a pencil and a string. Figure it out.) It wasn’t ever “trick or treat” with us; it was “trick and treat.” We never actually got to overturn an outhouse (there weren’t many around, or we would have), but we did or thought about things that would land us in juvie today. I’m assured that the statute of limitations has now expired or I wouldn’t be writing about this.

Some back story is important here. I had read “With the Indians in the Rockies” by James Willard Schultz and all 37 books about the Blackfoot Indians by an author named Hemming. (I was sent to the library by Ms. Kinneman to look for an author named Hemingway, but I was more attracted to the Indian books.)

My friend Jimmy was a year younger than me and gladly bought into all of my ideas. My idea for this particular Halloween was to dress up as Indians (Native Americans today). I dyed a couple of my little sister’s diapers black and formed them into black wigs with pigtails.

We made leggings out of old pants and a vest from old shirts. We wore moccasins, carried a quiver full of homemade arrows and a longbow slung over our shoulders. We looked like the real thing, or at least we thought so.

which to shoot. We finally decided on just the right door, a wide, all-wood door with lights on either side. We both wanted to be the one to put that quivering arrow right in the center of that door, so we decided he would take the first shot and, if necessary, I would take the second. Now mind you, neither of us were bad kids; we just got caught up in being Blackfoot Indians.

Luckily, just as Jimmy was drawing his bow, I started thinking about the consequences. It wouldn’t be too difficult for the police to track down two boys dressed as Indians who had been all over town during the evening. The picture of us, sitting in the police station waiting for our parents to pick us up, flashed through my mind in that instant. I instantly grabbed for Jimmy’s arrow which I managed to bump as he was releasing it. The arrow fell short and to the right.

“What are you doing?” Jimmy shouted.

“I don’t think we should do this,” I answered.

I might add that Jimmy had always had impulsecontrol issues. He immediately pulled another arrow from his quiver and started to draw it.

“Wait!” I said. “We could get in big trouble over this.” Thankfully, he eased the tension on the bow.

I don’t know what made me think of the consequences of shooting an arrow into someone’s door at that particular moment, but doing so probably kept my name off the police blotter. I have, since that time, tried to always think through the consequences of all my actions — sometimes successfully.

Halloween is still my second most favorite holiday (Thanksgiving being first), and at my age, I still dress up and go with my grandchildren to get my share of the loot. I no longer look at wooden doors or carry a bow and arrow, but there’s still a young Blackfoot Indian inside of me.

We did our share of soaping and rattling, but what we really wanted to do was to stick one of our arrows into someone’s wooden door. Jimmy wanted to shoot a flaming arrow, but I nixed that.

We had spent the whole evening reaping our treats and at the same time casing the town for the right wooden door and a place from

Kent State University’s Atmospheric Research Group was recently awarded a $330,000 National Science Foundation grant. The award is expected to

fund the group’s founding mission of improving Kent’s psychotropic air quality, currently rated as “Level-1: Weedy.”

International Soap Box Derby Joins Forces With IndyCar

The Akron-based International Soap Box Derby and IndyCar, the open wheel racing organization best known for the Indianapolis 500, have entered into a marketing agreement through 2014. The agreement will create cross-promotion and marketing opportunities for both organizations.

first “real job” out of grad school, where he had completed a degree in creative writing with an emphasis on creative nonfiction and poetry.

When the magazine’s publisher, Don Baker Jr., called to offer him the position, he was excited to be a part of something new.

However, he wasn’t just a part of it: He was in charge.

Feeling both excited and blessed, Kleidon was ready to start his own traditions and play by his own rules, making things up as the magazine grew. With “a touch of journalism, a healthy dose of photography and a smattering of philosophy,” he says he “was ready to put out the best damn Akron magazine that anyone had ever seen.”

A decade later, Kleidon looks back on the magazine’s early days and

remembers working his tail off, with the fighting spirit and energy that comes with youth.

You served as editor until 2005. What have you been doing for the last eight years?

KK: I’ve been hiding in the shadows, waiting for Cleveland to let down its guard so that I can lead Akron in a hostile takeover and create one giant, mega Akron to rule all. Soon there shall be no 216 or 440. Only 330.

Also, I got married and fathered two boys, and I currently develop mindblowing marketing campaigns at Kleidon & Associates, which was recently named the “Best Marketing Agency to Ever Exist. Period.

Particularly in Akron and the Greater Bath Region” by a targeted group of very intelligent people. You can’t make up stuff like that.

You currently serve on the boards of Summit County Habitat for Humanity, The University of Akron and Akron Children’s Hospital. How does your journalism background help you fulfill those roles?

KK: Not a lick, for the most part. My position as an editor, however, provided valuable leadership experience, which is crucial for board involvement.

Which pop culture journalist is most like you? a.) Clark Kent from “Superman” b.) Les Nessman from “WKRP in Cincinnati” c.) Lou Grant from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” d.) Ron Burgundy from “Anchorman” e.) Kermit the Frog from “Sesame Street” KK: I see myself as Clark Kent, but I think others would probably say Kermit the Frog.

My interns at the magazine would probably say I was a male version of Miranda Priestly from “The Devil Wears Prada.”

When you read a magazine, what things do you notice that normal readers might not?

KK: Way too much, unfortunately. I proof my way through anything I read and harp on mistakes. I scan photos in search of any digital retouching done poorly. I lend a critical eye on anything that claims to rate the “best of ” anything, because exactly who were the judges … I’ll stop at that. I’m afraid I have said too much already.

Do you prefer reading magazines via hard copies or e-readers?

KK: I still read hard copy magazines, but I have gone to e-readers for books, and that simply comes down to availability of material and the devices currently in our home. I’m not one to wax nostalgic; I would happily go electronic with everything.

What is your opinion on the future of magazine journalism?

KK: Excellent magazine journalism boils down to good storytelling, and the world will always have good stories to be told. As long as the reins remain loose, there will always be opportunities to raise the bar.

What advice would you give aspiring journalists?

KK: Make a difference with what you write, or move on. More than ever, people are inundated with content, and so much of it is garbage. I think journalists need to work harder than ever to prove their value over someone running an ambitious Twitter account.

In my spare time, you’ll find me ...

KK: My older son and I love the Fall Hiking Spree in the Metro Parks, and that’s become a tradition for us. Spare time is so rare at this point in my life that when it comes around, I become suspicious of what I’m forgetting to do. I think most parents understand what I mean.

What would surprise people about you?

KK: I’m a Cleveland sports fan to the end, but I would wholly support the renaming of the Indians and retirement of Chief Wahoo.

LMOST THE ENTIRE COASTAL STRIP OF VIETNAM IS A PATCHWORK OF BRILLIANT GREEN RICE PADDIES

THAT HAVE BEEN NURTURED FOR MANY YEARS PRIMARILY BY WOMEN WEARING CONE-SHAPED HATS.

THERE ARE PICTURESQUE BEACHES ALONG THE COAST, AND INLAND THERE ARE SOARING MOUNTAINS,

MANY OF WHICH ARE DRAPED BY DENSE, HUMID FORESTS.

YET THE SUBLIME PHYSICAL BEAUTY OF VIETNAM IS SHADOWED CLOSELY BY ITS POLITICAL AND TUMULTUOUS PAST.

As we look back at our October 2003 issue, we can see how much has changed. In that issue we featured the presidents of our two local universities.

Carol Cartwright served as president of Kent State University from 1991 to 2006 where she earned the distinction of being the first female president of a university or college in Ohio.

Armed with a B.A. in art from Connecticut College, Keener later went on to teach cartooning at the University of Akron for 25 years. In 1992, she wrote an authoritative book, Cartooning, for Prentice Hall. A syndicated strip came next.

The family dogs were Keener’s inspiration for Hamster Alley. Since the syndicate already had a dog comic strip, she turned her Pomeranian into a cat and the Siberian husky into a rabbit.

Originally from Cleveland, Cavanaugh caught the attention of Billy Joel one day when performing in Las Vegas. Since then, Cavanaugh moved to New York and received a Grammy nomination and a Tony nomination for his role in the Broadway musical, “Movin’ Out,” featuring the music of Billy Joel.

E.J. Thomas Hall’s first season began back in the fall of 1973, and 40 years later, the hall has hosted thousands of events, and the performers on its stage have entertained millions of people.

Dan Dahl, executive director of E.J. Thomas Hall, has been working at the venue for about 23 years. He says the hall was established through the collaborative efforts of The University of Akron and leaders in the Akron community.

“Dr. Norman Auburn was president of the university at the time,” Dahl says. “His wife was very involved with the Ohio Ballet, and they wanted a new performance home worthy of their company.”

They named the venue after Edwin J. Thomas, who was the Chairman and CEO of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and a member of the university’s board of trustees.

A wall in the hall’s Green Room is dedicated to E.J. Thomas, and Dahl says there is a full page dedicated to Thomas in every season program, describing the man as “a driving force in making sure that this amazing hall was built in our beautiful city.”

Located in downtown Akron on The University of Akron campus, E.J. Thomas Hall attracts a full range of entertainment options, including musical performances and concerts, fundraising events, The University of Akron Forum Series and other special events. At full capacity, the hall can seat close to 3,000 people, and the venue hosts more than 400,000 people annually.

“It is the home of Broadway in Akron, bringing professional Broadway tours to Akron, and it’s also the home of Tuesday Musical Association and the Akron Symphony 16

Orchestra, making it the premiere venue in Akron for Broadway and concerts both pop and classical,” Dahl says.

The Children’s Concert Society sponsors shows and Akron Youth Symphony also performs concerts here.

Although many community events are held at E.J. Thomas Hall, it is owned and operated

by The University of Akron and supports a number of events for the university and its students. Over the years, Dahl says the hall has emphasized serving the students because, after all, the student body is the reason the university exists.

“For example, we entertained over 8,000 University of Akron students during the first two weeks of school with a variety of events,” he says. “Without the university’s ongoing support, the building would not be here to serve the Greater Akron community.”

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about the hall, Dahl says, is its “diversity, depth and breadth.” Take one look at the venue’s calendar, and you’ll notice that the scope of events differ week by week, month by month and season by season.

To celebrate E.J. Thomas Hall’s 40th anniversary, Michael Cavanaugh, one of today’s top piano prodigies, is collaborating with the Akron Symphony Orchestra. This event will be Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.

“This performance will bring together Cavanaugh and the Akron Symphony Orchestra to bring back the memories of the last four decades by sharing the music of Billy Joel, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles and much more,” Dahl says. “Following this landmark performance, the entire audience is invited to the Lobby for a 40th anniversary celebration.”

Next month, E.J. Thomas Hall is introducing a new series, The Contemporaries, which “showcases innovative, edgy trend setters that are gaining international acclaim for their artistry,” Dahl says.

The first performance of this series features 2Cellos, a phenomenal duo that began as a YouTube sensation and broke new boundaries by using cellos in unconventional ways in a variety of musical genres.

“Hopefully, E.J. Thomas Hall will continue to provide Northeast Ohio with opportunities to experience premiere music and theater that’s not available anywhere else in this area,” Dahl says.

Fright Night

/ A once-favorite pasttime just isn’t the same. / When I think back 20-something years to the Halloweens of my youth, I’m overtaken by a multi-sensory wave of memories. My skin prickles with the cool night air that blanketed suburban Northern Kentucky neighborhoods every October. My ears catch the echoing din as approaching gaggles of kneehigh devils, demons and licensed cartoon characters traversed the foreshortened cul-de-sac, only eight houses deep, of my longtime address. I smell the dead and drying leaves piled in lawns, see stars twinkling against the dark night sky, taste the cloying saccharine film that coated my mouth halfway through a bag of mass-produced candy.

Halloween was a special time, not just for the pillowcase I never lugged home less than three-quarters full of dime-size candy and unwanted pennies, but also for the implied taboo of the holiday: In the buckle of the Bible Belt — an area dominated by polyester-suited Baptists for whom dancing, drinking and trick-or-treating were the strict domain of wanton heathens — celebrating All Hallows Evening was a sure sign of the devil’s untested claim to a youngster’s soul.

In the early days of November, a good many of my friends and relatives recounted church basement gatherings universally dubbed “harvest parties,” alternative Halloween functions where

costumes and candy were welcome, but the devil’s tricks and treats were not. I half-listened to these tales of elevated merriment, my mind still buzzing from the handfuls of Jujyfruits and mini Tootsie Rolls I inoculated myself with at every available opportunity.

I remember early Halloweens, decked in a sheet of unbreathable plastic printed with Batman’s costume (still blue and gray at that time), a fragile and sureto-crack half-mask of the Dark Knight’s visage strapped to my face via a fraying, elastic band.

I recall my final Halloween as a candy beggar when my friend Wayne and I, middle schoolers just toeing our teenage years, cobbled together ninja costumes from the toy rack at the corner drugstore. I presented myself as Daniel, the Karate Kid himself, but Wayne, the darker half of our pairing, accessorized in black and declared himself a student of the Cobra Kai. And I remember the following year when, shamed by the accusing stares received on my last outing, I built a casket out of spray-painted foam board and hid inside to frighten naïve youngsters, a trick abandoned 20 minutes in after still-potent fumes left me too light-headed and heavy-lidded to execute my ghoulish intentions.

Many years later, my wife and I found ourselves living back in this house, the two of us ready to experience a child’s Halloween again with our young one, a

then-one-year-old daughter who we dressed in an elaborate chiffon number purchased from the local Target: She was our little princess. We settled ourselves on the front door stoop, a plastic bowl overflowing with Jujyfruits and mini Tootsie Rolls at our feet, and we waited for the gaggle of bedecked children to find our house at the end of this classic cul-de-sac.

But from the start, it wasn’t the same – it wasn’t even Halloween, but the Sunday before October 31. The crisp night air was hours away, the sun still high in the sky, as trick-or-treating had been moved back to the more respectable hour of 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Leaves still hung on the branches, as warmer autumns of recent years shortened fall to a two-day season, foliage dropping overnight in a mass denuding of sweet gum, oak and maple. And there were no kids at our door – we could see sporadic clumps of children pass the end of our street (easy to spot in the midday sun), but no costumed youngster broke away to wander to our house. After a half hour of waiting with a full bowl of sweets, we flipped off the porch light, locked the house and took our princess down the street to gather candy on the main drag.

My family and I now live in Kent, and we’ve grown accustomed to the afternoon, not-quite-Halloween trick-ortreating. Our first child has been joined by two siblings, and my

wife and I live on a more-traveled walkway than our previous side street. The devilish taboos have been replaced by, this being Kent, adult aspersions cast on corporate candy and unrefined sugar, so there are fewer Jujyfruits and mini Tootsie Rolls and more organic apples, vegan, sugar- and gluten-free candy-like products that my children toss into the reject pile. And, as Northeast Ohioans, we’ve learned to, if not love, at least tolerate trick-ortreating in the rain.

It all works perfectly well, and bags of candy are adequately gathered, but I still feel like something has been lost, like these little “improvements” have robbed Halloween of its deserved delight. I understand these are the nostalgic feelings of an aging parent, and my children will feel the same way when they hoverboard on Halloween with their young ones in the summer-like October of a globally-warmed future, but once, just once, I’d like to take my costumed kids out on a cool, Halloween evening. Sixty Years of Animals, Education and Interaction fund the exhibit. The community responded by raising more than $900. The day the chimp arrived, 8,400 excited residents gathered to greet Akron’s newest resident.

I was recently in our Journey to the Reef exhibit at the Akron Zoo looking at the new octopus. It was just before we opened at 10 a.m., and I was enjoying the quiet time with the octopus that was putting on quite a show. I found myself shaking my head in awe of this amazing creature. Then, I heard tiny footsteps out in the hall running past the Komodo dragon and then they faded as they hit the carpet of the reef exhibit. The little blonde-haired girl stopped in her tracks when she saw me, as she was not expecting anyone to be there. But then her eyes locked on the interesting-looking creature moving in the water. She jumped up and down and hollered, “Mom, look! Wow!” It is a sound we love to hear at the zoo and one I never take for granted. It is the reason we exist.

For 60 years, the Akron Zoo has strived to make that exact type of connection with animals and people and to hear those words. For that little girl to be able to have that moment with an animal she may never have had the chance to see, especially up close, a lot has had to transpire in the last six decades - and it all began with you.

If the people of this community were not at the forefront of a zoo coming to Akron in 1953, there would never have been a zoo born. With every step the zoo has taken, you have been there guiding the journey. You are the reason, that in 1957, the zoo was able to bring a chimp named Joe Coco to Akron.

The zoo launched a “change for chimps” campaign with a goal to raise $600, which was needed to care for the new animal and 26

The community was behind the zoo even when it was struggling in the 1970s, and there was talk of moving or closing the zoo. You spoke up, and your voice was heard.

You wanted a zoo, and you wanted it to stay in Akron. The zoo did stay and, little by little, took the necessary steps to make sure it was a great place for animals and people.

By the end of the 1990s, the zoo was once again at a crossroads. The Akron Zoo was the only zoo in Ohio not funded by a tax. People of this community had responded positively to the recent additions at the zoo like Tiger Valley and Asian Trail. But you let us know that you had even bigger dreams for your Akron Zoo. You wanted more animals, more exhibits, more education and more guest amenities. To make that happen, the zoo would need additional support. The generous Summit County community once again responded with the passage of our first-ever tax levy in 2000.

Now the responsibility to deliver those promises fell on the staff and volunteers. Based on your feedback, we added more animals like lemurs, snow leopards, jaguars, penguins, Komodo dragons and more. We increased our education programs. We added more ZooCamps, overnight experiences, and class-

room and community programs. To enhance your experience, we added additional parking, a Welcome Center, a café, zoo gardens and other amenities.

With a renewal of the levy in 2006, we once again asked you, “What would you like your zoo to look like?” You wanted more experiences, more animals - specifically native wildlife and more education. In return, we’ve added a train ride, carousel ride, saltwater aquarium exhibit and the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge exhibit with animals that are or used to be indigenous to this area like grizzly bears, bald eagles, river otters and red wolves. We now host almost 25,000 school kids annually at the zoo and conduct more than 900 education programs every year.

None of this would have been possible without your loyalty, support and desire to have a great zoo in our community. When you gave us your vote of confidence in 2000, we set out to become a first-class zoo. We didn’t need to become the biggest zoo in the country, just the best zoo for Summit County.

You pushed us to build great exhibits with amazing animals and a lot of fun and educational opportunities. But we didn’t want to stop there. We wanted your zoo to become a place where your family’s quality time together forms memories to last a lifetime.

We knew we could offer something special at the Akron Zoo that would keep visitors coming back time and time again. That something special is the nose-to-nose experience that creates a connection between visitors and exotic wildlife.

The goal for our past 60 years has been to get people up close to animals and hear them say, “Wow!” I echo that little girl’s sentiment when I think of all the support our community has provided the Akron Zoo to make it what it is today. When you come home from a long day at work, what kind of meal do you cook for yourself?

If you’re part of a family, it could be something elaborate or something easy, something fresh or something that resembles leftovers. If you’re cooking just for yourself, dinner could be a grand culinary expression or it could be a pizza made with grocery-store salad bar fixings.

Or, it could just be lo mein eaten straight out of the white waxy carton.

No matter who you are and how you live, food means survival, and we’ve asked five of the area’s most creative chefs what they cook for themselves when they’re off the clock.

Chef Sherry Schie Shy Cellars, Strasburg

Prima-Puttanesca “It’s filled with fresh vegetables, then anchovies, capers and olives, and finally, homemade pasta and lots of fresh grated parmesan cheese.”

Sherry Schie’s mother hated to cook, so as a child, Schie spent time in the kitchen with her grandmother and her Amish neighbor.

After marriage, she worked for 20 years in retail, five years at her church, and then pursued a third career by studying at the International Culinary Arts & Science Institute in Chesterland. “Life is like riding a surfboard,” she says. “Paddle hard and always be ready for the big one, and enjoy the ride.”

When was the first time you prepared this dish for yourself?

SS: I was craving anchovies but I didn’t want just a Puttanesca sauce, I wanted veggies in it. So, I opened up my refrigerator and pantry and started throwing things together. That’s how I always come up with my best dishes.

Do you serve this dish in your restaurant?

SS: Occasionally, but that’s because we change our menu almost every day.

What is it about this dish that keeps you coming back?

SS: It’s what I call a “clean dish.” It’s filled with fresh vegetables and good-for-you things, nothing artificial.

Plus, this is one of those dishes you can whip together in no time and use whatever veggies you have.

Then, during third-grade Career Day, he said he wanted to be a chef.

“The teachers didn’t know exactly what to do about that so I was taken to a local restaurant and allowed to watch a lunch service in the kitchen,” he says.

“I was hooked from that point forward.”

What is it about this dish that keeps you coming back?

AO: It’s the ultimate comfort food, and it can be modified to fit

your mood. If you feel like spicy, you can add more pepper, red pepper flakes or some chilies. If you feel like a heartier meal, you can add more bacon, sausage or fish.

When was the last time you made this for yourself?

AO: Last night. [After this photo shoot,] I described it to a large table in the Circle L Steakhouse (at The Galaxy) and, of course, they wanted to try it. After I made it for them, I made it for myself and the cooks working the front line. It was a hit.

Do you serve this dish in your restaurant?

AO: After last night’s success, I will seriously consider putting it on the winter menu. Since we do so much “al minute” cooking already, it’s not a problem to make this for anyone who requests it.

Grilled barbeque pork shanks and lobster tail over a salad Although Chef J.R. Hobbs has been cooking for 22 years, he first learned about cooking by working with his mother in the kitchen. He attended the Culinary Institute of America and then apprenticed under Chef Curtis Eargle at the historic Maryland Club in Baltimore.

“Chef Spike Gjerde, of the Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore, expressed that anything is achievable with ingenuity and the right attitude,” he says.

When was the first time you prepared this dish for yourself?

JRH: Last summer for my wife’s birthday. Kathy enjoys seafood, and I enjoy meat, so it’s a happy medium for dinner in our family.

When was the last time you made this for yourself?

JRH: I made it for our Labor Day party on the lakes.

Do you serve this dish in your restaurant?

JRH: We offer it occasionally on our seasonal specialty menu.

What is it about this dish that keeps you coming back?

JRH: On my day off, I enjoy getting out of the kitchen and grilling outside on a nice day with my family. www.akronlife.com

A seared scallop with a mango shrimp ceviche, fresh avocado and red chili oil.

Chef Stewart calls himself a “self-taught chef ” whose biggest culinary influence is his mom. He never went to culinary school and, instead, put himself through college working in restaurant kitchens. “Running a great kitchen is a rush,” he says. “Most chefs are just adrenaline junkies, and the life of a chef keeps you coming back no matter the hours.”

When it comes to his favorite meal of the day, the terms “breakfast, lunch and dinner” don’t really apply to him. “It’s more or less when I can find downtime in a 15-hour-day to whip something simple up for myself,” he says.

When was the first time you prepared this dish?

AS: It was part of a fourcourse wine dinner we held as a charity event for a cancer survivor at Lager & Vine.

When was the last time you made this for yourself?

AS: The last time I actually made this dish was about two weeks ago. As it gets cooler, it’s getting hard here to find good avocados.

What is it about this dish that keeps you coming back?

AS: It has very simple flavors yet when plated all together, it has a wealth of contrast and complements in those flavors.

Chef Beau Schmidt Beau’s Grille, Akron

Being a chef is what Beau Schmidt was meant to do, and although he’s been cooking for 35 years “really it feels like my entire life,” he says.

Schmidt trained under worldclass Chef Brendan Murphy, but as a child, he cooked alongside his family. “My grandmother made the best pancakes and potato soup, and I would help her,” he says. “I quickly memorized all the ingredients and got them out for her whenever she was making them. I loved it.”

When was the first time you prepared this dish for yourself?

BS: I’ve been enjoying this dish for so many years that I truly can’t remember.

What is it about this dish that keeps you coming back?

BS: I don’t order steak out very often, so I enjoy cooking a great steak at home and pairing it with some delicious sides. I normally select a cut with a little fat like a strip or rib-eye.

Do you serve this dish in your restaurant?

BS: We have different variations of this dish all year long. Quality of Consciousness The Finleys never forgot their first experience with the afterlife.

The date was Dec. 7, 1916. Akron native Ruth Ebright Finley and her husband, Emmet – journalists working in Cleveland – had gone to a boarding house for dinner. That evening a storm blew in off Lake Erie, and rather than returning home in the wind, rain and sleet, the couple decided to wait out the storm.

... The game changed their lives.

That evening, the couple “met” Richard Neville Hall, a volunteer in the American Ambulance Service who had died on Christmas Day the year before in the war in France.

Hall and the other “invisibles” — spirits able to communicate with certain living beings — would take Ruth and Emmet Finley on an adventure that the pair never planned.

By day, the couple was well-respected professionals; but in their off hours, they explored the psychic world, writing about their voyages under the pseudonyms of Darby (Emmet) and Joan (Ruth).

Ruth was the one with the psychic “gift.” She quickly transitioned from Ouija board to “receiving station” for spirits who wished to communicate with those of the earthly world. One of Ruth’s contemporaries called her “one of the greatest psychics if not the greatest in the world today.” Her husband, Emmet, was the “conceiving station,” who asked questions of the visiting spirits and took notes on what took place during Ruth’s trance.

The couple decided to keep their identities secret so their professional careers would not be endangered. After all, psychic ability is seldom seen as a requisite skill for a career in journalism. Ruth also wanted to protect her socially prominent Akron family.

She was the daughter of Republican politico/surgeon Dr. Leonidas Ebright and the former Julia Ann Bissell, a social activist who had helped found Akron’s YWCA, served on the board of the Summit County Children’s Home and was the first woman appointed to Ohio State Board of Charities and Inspection.

Ruth started her journalism career at the Akron Beacon Journal, covering society and music and writing feature stories. Her biggest scoop was an interview with the reclusive Mina Edison, wife of the inventor Thomas Edison.

Ruth soon went on to The Cleveland Press, where she was known as Ann Addams, the sob sister who investigated the working conditions of women in the city. Like Nellie Bly in New York, Ruth went undercover, working in laundries, department stores, factories, restaurants and private homes, before writing her exposés.

While working undercover as a maid in an East Cleveland household, Ruth was almost discovered. The lady of the house was suspicious because Ruth had no boyfriends. Her Press editor arranged for a newsroom staffer, Emmet Finley, to pose as her beau. Six months later Ruth and Emmet married in the Ebright grand home on East Market Street in Akron.

Unlike many women of her day, Ruth didn’t give up her career after marriage. By 1911, she was the woman’s page editor at the Press, shifting over to the fiction editor for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper chain from 1912 to 1918. In 1919, she was managing editor of the Washington (D.C.) Herald.

In 1920, the couple moved to New York City, where she was women’s editor for the Newspaper Enterprise Association.

When Richard Neville Hall first reached out to Ruth and Emmet on that dark and stormy night, it was a time of renewed interest in the metaphysical and the telepathic. During and after World War I, many Americans and Europeans hoped to reach out to those who had been lost in combat, and Hall was just one of the war’s casualties.

In “Our Unseen Guest,” a 1920 book the Finleys wrote under the pseudonyms Darby and Joan, they recount the story Hall told them through the Ouija board about his death: “I went out, out, out, out. I can find no words to tell you the horror of sudden death. It is the one great tragedy. When thought returned, I was as one lost in a familiar yet wholly strange world. Aimlessly I wandered, seeking I knew not what, dazed, mystified. I did not know I was, as you say and as I used to say, dead.

The Finleys didn’t blindly accept Hall. They checked out the details of his life and death and were convinced that they were, indeed, communicating with a dead soldier—even if it was (in Ruth’s words) “creepy.”

Over the next three decades, Ruth and Emmet conversed with many “invisibles” from the afterlife: U.S. President Calvin Coolidge, Ruth’s father and many others.

Emmet died in 1950, and Ruth died five years later. Both are buried in Salem, Ohio.

Throughout their lives, Darby and Joan’s true identities were closely guarded. After her death, Ruth revealed the secret to Arthur Ford, a well-known American medium, who published the information in his autobiography.

In 2011, “Our Unseen Guest,” long out of print, was reissued. Linda Pendleton, who wrote the introduction to the new edition, calls the book an “important addition to the literature of spirit communication,” one that “lends credibility to the belief that consciousness survives death of the physical body.”

... When death comes naturally there are always those here to meet the voyagers. But there was no one to meet me, no one to explain that I had graduated into a new plane of consciousness.”

The Finleys’ letters, along with records of their conversations with those in the afterlife, are now housed in The University of Akron Archives.

Using the Ouija board, Hall continued to tell the Finleys that in the afterlife a woman finally came to guide him from the “shock of battlefield graduation.” His job in the afterlife, he told them, was “the com-

Screening and early detection saves lives.

everal years ago, during her medical training in Dayton, Dr. Franciska Kiraly participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. She recruited family, neighbors and friends and was able to hit pacesetter status by raising $1,000 that year.

S

“I did it because I knew the American Cancer Society was a worthwhile cause and in support of those I knew who had been affected by the disease,” she says. “Strangely enough, I had no family ties to breast cancer.”

Fast forward to 2013, Kiraly was finished with her internal medicine residency at Summa Health System and approaching her 30th birthday. She had big plans for the year, none of which included being diagnosed with cancer.

Early in January 2013, Kiraly noticed a lump while taking a shower. Knowing these things shouldn’t be ignored, she called her physician right away. An appointment was followed by an ultrasound, a mammogram and then a biopsy. Days later, her doctor gave her the dreaded news.

“I remember thinking about all the patients that I had told that they have cancer. Did they feel the same things and have similar questions as I was having? There are so many decisions to make, and how do you decide?

“After talking to my surgeon and looking at the scientific studies, I opted for a lumpectomy and chemotherapy that would be followed by radiation,” she says.

After a few cycles of chemotherapy, Kiraly’s mom shaved her head for her as the hair started to fall out. She attended the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better program, a class designed to help women deal with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

In addition to the beautiful makeup kit and helpful tips, she found camaraderie with other women who were in the same boat, even though they were all at different points in their cancer journeys.

“Being a physician, it’s been difficult to accept being the patient,” she says. “Yet, thanks to all the support and love from my family, friends, coworkers and neighbors, this experience has helped me grow and mature both as a clinician and fellow human being. You see things differently once you have dealt with cancer. Life becomes more valuable, and you appreciate the little things each day.”

Kiraly encourages women to get their screenings and never ignore anything that feels abnormal, for either women or men.

“Please get your mammogram. They are life saving. For those of us who aren’t in the recommended age to get routine mammograms, any and all lumps need to be checked right away,” she says. “I know I was supposed to have 10 more years without needing a mammogram. I had no family history and here I am, a breast cancer survivor at the age of 30. So if you feel something, get it checked out and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Early detection leads to an earlier stage of diagnosis, which means early treatment and ultimately a cure and longer survival. Who wouldn’t want that?”

Kiraly has finished chemotherapy and will be wrapping up radiation in time to walk with Summa Health System’s flagship team at the Akron Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on Sun., Oct. 20.

Sally Gill-Thompson Klein’s Pharmacy and Medical Equipment is helping to finish the fight.

ally Gill-Thompson is no stranger to the unique medical supply needs that arise for breast cancer patients.

Having a close family friend undergo a mastectomy many years ago and struggle to find the appropriate prosthesis and undergarments, Gill-Thompson and her mother added a new service to their existing medical supply business. They began working with mastectomy patients to provide them with products that improved their quality of life after surgery Now, as a manager at Klein’s Pharmacy and Medical Equipment, Gill-Thompson sees daily how devastating breast cancer is and how important community support is.

“Our Certified Mastectomy Fitters assist more than 500 breast cancer survivors each year with their medical supply needs,” she says. “Each one has a unique story that inspires us. We walk for them, and we walk for our employees that have been affected in some way by this dreadful disease. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is one way for Klein’s to show our appreciation and provide hope.”

Gill-Thompson is the team leader for Klein’s Making Strides team, participating this year for the 11th time. Each year her

company’s team raises thousands of dollars to fight breast cancer.

“The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event has become the event close to my heart,” she says.

“I believe a cure for cancer will be found in our lifetime, or at least much better medications to prolong survival. But it can’t be done without research and funding. All need to get involved, it’s not hard, and the reward is great!”

Gill-Thompson has been a dedicated American Cancer Society volunteer for 13 years. When she isn’t assisting patients with their medical supply needs and supporting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, she enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren and her cat.

At Ohio’s Amish Country in Holmes County, the entire family can have fun, whether you make it a day-trip adventure or a long-weekend reunion. Start with the shops.

Visitors often flock to Amish Country for its unique and authentic shopping experiences.

In Berlin, several new boutiques have opened with fashion-forward choices, including locally handmade jewelry and accessories.

If antique shopping is your cup of tea, Millersburg is the place for you. Walk the historic downtown streets for several antique stores, and watch for special antique events, such as Antiques in the Alley throughout the year and the Holmes County Antique Festival, Oct. 5 and 6. Millersburg is also home to the Holmes County Tourism Bureau, where maps and local information are available.

DIY fanatics are drawn to Amish Country for the wealth of inspiration for home décor.

Many Amish traditions incorporate handmade craftsmanship, which has made the region a source for materials and ideas for many home and garden projects. Stores in Charm and Kidron, in particular, have complete resources for home projects, and you can also get hard-to-find supplies like exotic woods or specialty tools here.

Noodles and mashed potatoes. Almost every kind of pie you can imagine. It’s the kind of food that both kids and grown-ups love.

“More please” is a common phrase around here.

While Amish Country is an easy drive from Akron — less than an hour — take a lesson from the Amish and live life at a slower pace. More than 50 options are available in the county or surrounding area for overnight stays, including unique hotels, quaint bed and breakfasts, cabins for larger families and RV parks.

These favorites are the fare of the region’s restaurants, but there’s a whole other foodie life to experience in Amish Country. Because the area is surrounded by farms, you can go straight to the source to get the freshest — and best tasting — foods that would make any discriminating chef salivate. There are plenty of roadside stands selling in-season produce and several butchers stocked with fresh meat. Be sure to bring a cooler and cash; most small Amish stands don’t accept credit cards.

Just like any good meal, a trip to Amish Country isn’t complete without some excellent dessert, and you’ll want to bring treats home to share. The bakeries offer local favorites like fry pies and whoopie pies, along with fresh fruit pies, cookies and pumpkin rolls, and the equally delicious breads and rolls. There are several stand-alone bakeries in Holmes County, but many of the larger restaurants now also have on-site bakeries.

With the variety of lodging choices, start with the location to make your choice. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway where the only traffic is the occasional passing buggy, there are plenty of establishments hidden along the countryside. Planning your visit Should you visit Ohio’s Amish Country on a whim? Sure, if you’re a regular and know your way around. But first-timers might want to create a plan to get the most out of their visit. Here are some tips: • Make tour reservations. There are some great experiences offered by local tour operators, but only if you call at least a few days in advance.

• Allow travel time. If you plan to travel from town to town, you’ll want to give yourself enough travel time to see everything.

Unemployment rates are falling, at 7.3 percent as of presstime, giving graduates more hope than previous years at finding a job. According to Forbes.com, the bestpaying college majors of 2012 are computer engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, finance, construction science, and information science and systems.

If these majors aren’t your cup of tea, you can take advantage of money-saving options offered to students both in high school and college. In addition to loans and scholarships, here are some other options that you might not know about.

In today’s economy, it’s understood that you most likely must have a college education to get a job in your desired professional field. However, with a constant increase in tuition and fees, affording higher education is becoming more difficult. Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls offers 27 AP classes both on campus and online, and Cindy Burgio, Walsh’s director of college guidance, says last year 149 seniors took at least one AP course, while most take three. While many colleges average several hundred dollars per credit hour, the AP exam to receive credit is just $89. “It is the universally accepted example of college rigor that can be used in the evaluation process,” Burgio says.

Regional campuses are affordable, closer to home, have smaller class sizes and allow more one-on-one with faculty. At Kent State University at Stark, tuition for freshman and sophomore courses are $5,554 per year, and upper level classes are $6,508 per year, compared to the main campus’ $9,816 per year, says Diane Walker, Kent State Stark’s director of student services. “The flexibility allows students to maximize their course selection options,” she says.

Participate in transfer programs offered at regional campuses or community colleges.

Stark State College offers associate of arts and associate of science degrees that easily transfer to baccalaureate degree programs at nearly 40 universities nationwide. Stark also offers the Ohio Transfer Module, which guarantees the transfer of a minimum of 36 to 40 semester credit hours of specified courses to any Ohio public university.

Irene Motts, Stark State’s director of marketing and communication, says the benefits are affordable tuition, small classes, personalized attention, well equipped and state-of-the-art labs and equipment. “Stark’s tuition is $150.30 per semester credit hour, that equates to an average tuition savings of $12,000 for the first two years at a public Ohio university,” Motts says.

From $20,000 to $65,000 a year – that’s the tuition cost for one year of college, says John McDonough, a money expert who helps retirees and parents plan for their families’ futures.

“For the 2012–2013 academic year, the average cost for an in-state public college was $22,261. A moderate budget for a private college averaged $43,289,” says McDonough, CEO of Studemont Group College Funding Solutions, www.studemontgroup. com. “But for elite schools, we’re talking about three times the cost of your local state school. Either way, your kid’s higher education can easily shoot into six figures after four years.”

Along with worrying about rising tuition prices, parents also fear for their own futures if their retirement savings are drained by children’s college costs, McDonough says. Only 14 percent, for example, are very confident they’ll have the money to live

comfortably in retirement, he says, citing a 2012 survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

“Families feel they’re faced with conflicting goals, but there are numerous ways to pay for college while investing in your future retirement,” says McDonough, who offers insights for parents to keep in mind while planning for their child’s education: • The Return on investment (ROI) of a college education: At a time when so many American families are financially strapped, college is an especially stressful topic because parents know higher learning will help their kids succeed. College graduates earn 84 percent more than those with only a high school diploma, according to Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce.

Here is how earning breaks down over one’s life time, based on education: a doctoral degree-holder will

earn $3.3 million over a lifetime; $2.3 million is estimated for a college graduate; those with only a high school diploma can expect $1.3 million.

• Move retirement assets to qualify for grants: Most parents know about the 529 savings account, but that’s not necessarily the best or only option. Reallocating your retirement assets, such as 401(k)s, can better position a child to qualify for grants and scholarships. This legal and ethical maneuvering may be the single most important factor when considering how to pay for college.

• Know your student’s strengths and weaknesses: Consider independent and objective analysis of your future college student. Assessment might include a personality profile and a detailed search for a future career. Also think about a more nuts-and-bolts approach, including scholarship eligibility, SAT and ACT prep courses, review of admissions

essays and an in-depth analysis of chances for enrollment in a student’s top four choices of colleges.

• Make a checklist of financial aid forms: In order to maximize a fair price of higher education, remember there is plenty of data to review. McDonough recommends a checklist with a timeline and notable deadlines. Be ready to troubleshoot the “alphabet soup” of data forms: FAFSA – Free Application For Federal Student Aid; CSS profile – College Scholarship Service; SAR – Student Aid Report; and more.

“You can’t compare tuitions and think you’re comparing costs,” she says. “The pivotal question is not what a school costs, but what will the school cost me. Tuition doesn’t take into consideration other factors such as what schools include in their costs and what costs are covered in a financial aid award package.”

Using the NPC allows families to better plan their financials.

“It can and should be used to start the conversation with the admissions and financial aid offices,” Finefrock says. “And for families unfamiliar with the college search process, it provides a jumping-in point related to understanding affordability.”

NPC does not take into account possible scholarships and loans available to a student.

However, because each college and university is federally mandated to provide a good estimate of what tuition would be for a full-time undergraduate freshman, families can trust the calculators as an accurate expectation for what they would have to pay.

“It can help students understand that the school that may cost the most could be the school that is the most affordable,” Finefrock says. “Or, a school with the largest scholarship award is not always the school that would cost the least. And, a private school can often be as affordable, if not more, than a public school because of the financial assistance.”

She suggests that families use the NPC to make sure all their options are considered. “[It’s] part of the process of figuring out what schools are right for the student by not eliminating schools too early in the process based solely on costs,” she says. —CC

The focal point of many living rooms is its fireplace but this feature is often overlooked when owners are choosing décor to enhance the room.

Just because the fireplace is a steady feature in the room doesn’t mean you can’t change its décor as the seasons change. In fact, incorporating a few of your favorite decorations or adding a new mantel can change the tone of the room.

When you’re decorating the mantel and hearth, you can keep it simple and inexpensive by using items from nature. In the autumn, your décor can be tree branches with brightly colored fall leaves or pumpkins and seasonal fruit, like apples or pears. Then, once the snowflakes start to fly, you can switch out those items for pine cones and evergreen boughs.

You also don’t have to buy any special containers to hold these items. Baskets, buckets, ceramic pots and glass vases look great when they’re overflowing with seasonal items.

If you want to give your mantel a personal touch, use it to display a collection. For example, antique cameras, special books or artwork gives the décor a meaningful accent and definite topic of conversation when guests come to visit.

People often choose to burn candles in the firebox rather than wood. Large diameter, three-wick candles look especially lovely in a fireplace and can be found in many colors and a variety of seasonal scents.

If your fireplace is flush to the floor, you can always opt for decorative fireplace screens. They’re available in classic, modern and rustic designs for under $100, and they help set the mood while keeping your guests safe from the flames.

For a more contemporary look, consider an elevated gas fireplace.

It serves as a dramatic focal point that can be admired from any spot in the room.

Another hot design trend for fireplaces is the see-through hearth which is great for open floor plans and allows people in two rooms to enjoy the same toasty fire.

When it comes to decorating your fireplace mantle, there are two rules. The first rule is “Less is more.” People often overload their mantle with knick-knacks, and when their house guests are visually overwhelmed, they can’t appreciate what pieces are really important to the owner. Keep it simple.

The second rule is “Maintain balance.” This has to do with the way you place your decorations. Think about symmetry when placing objects on the fireplace, and place items in groups of three or five.

If you want to change the look of your fireplace but can’t afford natural stone surrounds, consider a faux finish. With the help of an artist or a do-it-yourself kit, you can paint the fireplace to make it look like stone or another finish.

Upcycling is another great way to change the look of your fireplace and save the planet at the same time. Antique shops, estate sales and salvage yards may have the perfect reusable piece that, with some love and lacquer, can be turned into a one-of-a-kind mantel. Or, if

you find a decorative shelf you like that’s the right width, you can incorporate that instead.

Whatever decorating ideas you choose, keep in mind that your fireplace will quickly become a cozy gathering place for family and friends as the weather turns cool, so don’t forget to keep your welcome mat free of leaves and snow.

/ The top five eco-friendly ways to prepare your landscape for winter /

When preparing your landscape for the winter season, it’s always best to stay ahead of the game. The time to start is now, and we’ve asked Shawn Fitzgerald, a certified arborist from Kent-based Davey Tree Expert Company, to share some eco-friendly tips.

Plant your seeds Fitzgerald recommends you do as much of your planting in the fall because of its ideal growing conditions.

“Fall is for planting,” he says. “The soil is still warm, and we get into some nice rain. The plant material is established before the winter so it’s ready to jump out of the ground in the spring.”

He says autumn is a good time to cut back on all of your spent perennials, those plants that come back year after year and are done flowering for the season. So, it’s time to clean up all the dead foliage and debris above the ground.

It’s also a good time for cool-season annuals, he says.

“Most people think the flower season is over, but there are cool-season annuals such as pansies and snapdragons that will flower continuously through the fall until we get heavy snow,” he says.

Start a compost pile Rake up all your fallen leaves but don’t throw them away. After saving the pile for a couple of years, it’s exactly what your plants need.

“We highly recommend that you create a compost pile,” Fitzgerald says. “It’s the same thing as if you go to the store and buy organic matter. You can create your own.”

There’s not much to it. After gathering up your leaves, you can simply secure them in a plastic bag until it’s ready to use.

Mulching your trees and shrubs protects them by reducing the temperature extremes of your soil in the winter. But don’t “over-mulch”; apply only two to four inches and only use organic hardwood bark mulch.

Fitzgerald says the mulch acts like a “little blanket” that gives the root systems of your trees and shrubs the protection they need during the harsh winter weather.

“There’s a lot of junk on the market,” he says.

“True mulch is the ground-up bark from a tree, but it’s become so popular that people shred pallets and paint them brown and then call it mulch. Organic mulch breaks down and provides nutrients to the soil.”

Unlike the organic mulch, the “synthetic” mulch never breaks down into the soil, he says.

Prune and twine trees Fitzgerald says that fall is also the time to inspect your trees because the foliage is still out. It’s a lot easier for an arborist to determine what’s dead and then remove them.

“So fall is a dynamite time to designate what pruning is needed,” he says.

Another technique you can do to prepare for the winter is to tie up your shrubs using organic twine.

“We give them structural support with twine to reduce the impact from heavy snowfall because when you get heavy snowfall on the evergreens, it will break and split them,” he says.

Water your evergreens And finally, you should water your evergreens thoroughly, but only once a week. Fitzgerald recommends doing this instead of just watering them for a little bit every day.

Sebastiani Vineyards and Winery Sonoma 2011 Chardonnay // Sonoma 2009 Merlot

From time to time, someone asks what wines I drink and like. It’s a hard question and very difficult to answer because everyone’s tastes are so different.

I always recommend Sebastiani wine because it always hits the mark for quality, taste and value. Mark Lyon has over 30 years’ experience in making wine.

After graduating from University of California Davis, Lyon started working at Sebastiani in 1978, and by 1985, he was in charge of his first harvest. With years of experience working at one of the oldest wineries in Sonoma, Lyon has won Wine Spectator awards for several of his wines.

When Bill Foley purchased Sebastiani Vineyards and Winery in 2008, he worked with Lyon to increase the quality of the wine by buying new winemaking equipment and wine barrels, cutting production and restricting the yields. The business is now making more concentrated, complex wines across the board — from the Sonoma County Selection to its Proprietor’s wines.

Barb and Steve Talevich, owners of The West Side Bakery, have had so many customers traveling to their Akron shop from Green and Canton, they decided to make it simpler for them by opening up another store.

“Green seems to be the perfect place to go because there’s so much going on there,” Barb says. “It’s a fast-growing community, and everybody there has been wonderful to work with.”

Barb says the new location, which opened Aug. 20, is much larger than the one in Akron’s Pilgrim Square.

“We have lots of tables for people to sit down and have lunches, or a cup of coffee and a treat,” she says. “We’ve also got a fireplace and some comfy chairs for people to hang out.”

So, whether you’re looking for a place to hang out with friends, meet up for lunch or coffee, or hold business meetings, The West Side Bakery of Green is the ideal spot.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

Back in 1995, Delaware brewer Sam Calagione had a plan: He wanted to bring original craft beer to his town and combine it with great food and music. The result was Dogfish Head. >> Recognized for his experimental craft beers, Calagione and his crew haven’t forgotten about the favorites that the beer world has grown to love after all these years. While popular brews like 60 Minute IPA, 90 Minute IPA, Midas Touch and Raison D’Etre can be spotted year-round, Punkin Ale — quite possibly the brewery’s most beloved beer — can only be found as autumn makes its presence known.

Dogfish Head’s Punkin Ale is a full-bodied brown ale with its fair share of pumpkin and brown sugar thrown into the mix. HIKING SPREE HISTORY The 20 book “Steps In Time: Ninety Years of Metro Parks, Serving Summit County,” published by The University of Akron Press, details the start of the annual Fall Hiking Spree.

Here’s an excerpt from the book: “(Director-Secretary Arthur) Wilcox’s most lasting contribution was to be the Fall Hiking Spree, which kicked off in 964. It remains the country’s longest running and most successful hiking program. Wilcox called it a spree to give hikers the idea they were doing something fun instead of work.

The hiking spree did not spring from a whim. Wilcox knew from his days walking park boundaries and designing trails for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) that the parks, for all their natural beauty, were underused. He wanted to find a way to get people into the parks so they could see and experience what he already knew to be treasures …

Working with John Kasarda, who had replaced (Forrest) Coup as head of maintenance, Wilcox created a template that remains in place to this day. He mapped out a total of 2 miles along seven trails in the district’s six parks to be included in the first hiking spree. Each hiker had to have a form signed by a ranger.

One of the inaugural spree trails ran through Deep Lock Quarry (5779 Riverview Rd., Peninsula). Although the district had owned the land since 934, it had never been open to the public as a park until 964.

As an incentive, Wilcox and Kasarda planned to give out hiking staffs made of small saplings cut from the parks to all Summit County residents who

completed the seven hikes. They thought too small. By the end of the first spree, ,530 people had earned hiking staffs, including Wilcox, whose daughter, Anita, persuaded her parents to hit the trails so they could all earn their own staffs.

The overwhelming response presented a problem, because Wilcox and Kasarda were loath to cut that many saplings.

Bob Butcher of the Butcher Construction Co. brought a rescue in the form of enough mop handles to give to all the successful hikers …

But what could the parks offer repeat hikers in future sprees?

Naturalist Bert Szabo, who led many of the guided spree hikes on Sunday afternoons, suggested offering a metal shield to veteran hikers that could be attached to their staffs. That idea came from a park district in Germany.”

50 YEARS OF MEMORIES Since 964, Summit County residents from all walks of life have been enjoying the Fall Hiking Spree – and making memories in the process.

What started as an effort to familiarize people with our parks and trails has become an annual tradition for thousands of visitors.

THE MACKEYS Jim and Carolyn Mackey, of Tallmadge, have been earning hiking shields since 992.

“Jim wasn’t thrilled with the Browns games, so he decided we were going to do this on Sundays,” Carolyn said of the Fall Hiking Spree.

“I was tired of sitting around, watching, and I said, ‘Let’s do something,’ ” Jim added.

They started hiking with their three children, who are now adults and living in different parts of the country. Now in their 80s, the Mackeys continue because the spree keeps them active.

“I have to walk,” said Carolyn, who at age 9 was hit by a car and almost lost her right leg. “Hiking keeps me strong.”

When we met up with the couple at Goodyear Heights Metro Park in Akron, she described the park as “just like home.” When they were raising their family, Carolyn explained, they would regularly visit the park for hikes, pizza picnics, family baseball games and summer concerts.

“Little kids will see our sticks and they want to touch them – and naturally, they want their own,” Jim said.

Today, the couple enjoys the reaction from people, especially children, who see their 20-plus years of hiking shields when they’re out on the trails.

In their own quiet way, Jim and Carolyn are setting an example and inspiring the next generation of hikers.

THE SMITHS Charles and Gladys Smith live for the outdoors – and for each other.

The couple, married 46 years, often enjoys a picnic in the Metro Parks followed by a hike and a return to their picnic table, where she reads and he naps. They have hiked countless miles in the Metro Parks in every season. But they haven’t always completed the Fall Hiking Spree together.

For years, he thought the spree was too slow for him. He preferred to run the trails and parkways on his own while Gladys hiked, an activity she began years ago, inspired by her mother.

“She loved the parks, and my sister and I didn’t have a choice,” she joked.

Gladys first participated in the hiking spree in 967 when she taught for Twinsburg City Schools. One hundred students completed the fledgling program with her, incorporating English, science and reading skills on their hikes.

He quickly realized what he had been missing.

When we met the couple at Firestone Metro Park, “Smitty” had several great stories to share about his days with Goodyear Tire & Rubber, at least one of which made Gladys roll her eyes and say, “Oh, Charles.”

“This is the most healthy thing I do,” he said of the spree, adding that he now averages eight miles a day year-round, completing 5-minute miles.

“I don’t call him ‘Smitty.’ I call him Charles,” Gladys pointed out. “Unless he’s in trouble. Then I call him the Lone Ranger,” she added with a laugh.

When the couple started the spree together, “Smitty” said they completed all of the trails on the hiking form in one day. They completed them all in three days in 20, hiking two of the trails twice.

Thanks to the Fall Hiking Spree, the Lone Ranger no longer travels alone.

Gladys keeps a scrapbook of their outdoor adventures together, with hiking forms, park maps and photos.

She estimates there are hundreds of photos at home that haven’t yet made the book. He thinks there are even more.

That year, Gladys walked out of the park district’s main office, then located in Goodyear Heights Metro Park, with 04 hiking staffs, and she has completed the Fall Hiking Spree almost every year since.

Gladys later taught for the Akron Public Schools, and she retired in 994. Charles retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber in 2003. It was only

THE CARROLLS “Pat and I started doing the hiking spree when we were dating. It was something fun for us to do together,” Amanda Carroll explains.

Today, the Akron couple is raising two children: Maddie, 3, and Elliot, . Though Mom and Dad keep busy managing their own business, Amanda said they make a point to find time for the spree.

“This is the perfect family outing to do on weekends, or weeknights when we have a little extra time. It’s just a great way for us to do something active, and it’s free.”

Amanda said she hopes it will give Maddie and Eliott a sense of

The Carrolls consider themselves fortunate to have numerous parks and trails nearby. “The Metro Parks are such a great resource, and we are beyond lucky to have such a great park system in our back yard.”
