Sunny Road Trip I recently road tripped to Arizona to help a friend move into a new apartment. We enjoyed akronlife magazine as we passed through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and into Arizona. The warmth and sunshine were a nice retreat from the Ohio winter, and I enjoyed relaxing and hiking the trails.

This picture is on top of Piestewa (Squaw) Peak, the second highest point in the Phoenix mountains. It was an exhilarating climb and the first time I had done anything like that! I made friends with a couple from Chicago as we bonded over the snow that we were getting back home.

Glad I could bring a bit of Akron along to the Southwest, and I hope I brought a little sunshine back home.

Love Me, Love My Dog If it weren’t for pets, there would be a lot more lonely and unloved people in this world.

My dog Juneau and I walk the neighborhood every night for about a half mile. Along the way we meet other people walking their dogs after dark. Our dogs sniff each other in their dog ways, the walker and I say hello, then move on. This kind of exchange happens from early morning till late at night between dog walkers.

I know that most dog owners don’t walk their dogs, so I am left with the impression that there are a lot of dogs in our neighborhood. I have gotten to know a few of them. There is the old man at the end of the street whose miniature collie is his constant companion. They are the center of each other’s world, and I wonder how lonely life would be for either of them without each other’s companionship. I’ve heard the man talk with the collie like it’s one of his children. “We have to go inside now, because it’s getting late,” he said to her affectionately.

I know, I spend more time with Juneau than I do with anyone else in my family, including my wife. Juneau is, in turn, my best friend and protector. She lies by my side as I read or watch TV; she sleeps with me, cuddled up on cold winter nights against my legs at the foot of the bed. She likes to ride with me when I run errands or stays with me on the nights I visit with my mother, who thoroughly enjoys watching Juneau play with a basket of toys that she has set aside for all visiting dogs and cats.

When my mother was in a nursing home recovering from a fall, I brought Juneau with me on visits. Patients who had been slumped in their wheelchairs all day would perk up and want to pet Juneau; I could see everyone’s faces light up at the sight of her. I would guess that many people in nursing homes suffer from loneliness more than anything else, and the sight of a dog wagging its tail and sniffing them brightens their day.

My father was not one to show much affection toward his children or grandchildren, but his cat, Two, was a different matter. The first thing he did when he got home everyday was to call out in the most obnoxious girly voice, “Where is my Two? Where is she?”

His father, my grandfather, was a stern and stoic man who raised two sons with the back of his hand and a fist when he thought it was needed, but he started each day talking baby talk and whistling to his canary that lived in a cage in the kitchen.

What do these pets do for these folks that people don’t do? My guess is that pets are the epitome of unconditional love. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for? And unlike people, they don’t talk back, they don’t steal your car in the middle of the night and go joy riding (though I think they would like it), they’re happy to see us no matter what kind of day we’ve had and they give us affirmation of our worthiness for love — love that my grandfather got from his canary, my father got from his cat and I get from Juneau.

A part-time Kent State instructor, teaching courses in police work, recently pleaded guilty to felony drug and weapons

charges. The 57-year old man claimed he was “method teaching,” a technique he adopted from actor Daniel DayLewis.

Two Akron brothers, ages 9 and 13, were arrested for robbing a snow-shoveling resident with BB guns. Arraignment

is postponed while officials compile a list of the area’s longest, snowiest driveways for the boys’ community service.

The Ohio Department of Health, Oral Health Section recently honored Summa Health System’s Center for Dental Health with a $75,000 Safety Net Dental Care Award, aimed to reduce disparities in access to dental care. The grant specifically provides funding for comprehensive diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic dental services for one year.

The city recently kicked off a new campaign to celebrate local businesses called “Kiss my Akron.” Area doctors

fear a possible link between the slogan and increased hepatitis-A cases among more literal-minded citizens.

An Akron woman was arrested on Lovers Lane when police found methamphetamine hidden in her bra. The arresting officer

was recognized at a special ceremony for finally solving the decades-old mystery of Victoria’s secret.

With the help of 14 women, an Akron beautician recently gave birth at her place of employment, Polished Hair Designs.

Medical professionals arrived to find a healthy newborn boy with a luxurious, well-styled head of hair they diagnosed as “fabulous.”

/ Senior dog handler, Akron Children’s Hospital Doggie Brigade /

>> Bernie Schwartz is a dog lover. >> He has owned four four-legged friends since 1980 – three of which participated in the Akron Children’s Hospital Doggie Brigade program. With this program, local volunteers walk their dogs around the unit, and young patients can play with and pet the dogs.

Schwartz is the most senior dog handler at Akron Children’s and is one of the program’s original members since its creation in 1992. His current dog, a black Labrador Retriever named Maddie, has been in the program for a little over two years, goes to the hospital with

Schwartz twice a week and has clocked in over 230 hospital visits.

He is married with two grown children and three grandchildren.

How did you first learn about the Doggie Brigade and become involved?

BS: There was an article in the paper one day about a program starting at Children’s Hospital to have people with dogs come up and volunteer so I called them, and they sent me out an application right away. I didn’t hear anything for about a month, and then finally I got a letter saying to come down for a meeting.

How did the people at the hospital choose which dogs were best for the program?

BS: They give all the dogs a two-part test. The first part is obedience. The dog has to be able to sit, stay, lie down and heel on a loose lead. They have to be able to do this in a large classroom in front of the examiner and other adults in the program. The second part is the temperament test. The examiner and other adults the dog has never met will pet the dog and tug at his or her tail and feet to see a reaction.

Do you have to do any special training to prepare your dog for the Doggie Brigade draft?

BS: What you need is a dog that has basic obedience but every owner should teach their dog those skills. The dog has to be quiet and calm. The single best exercise I’ve found to train these dogs is to simply put a leash on them and walk them. Walk them up and down in the 12

neighborhood, take them to PetSmart and as many places as they can get in with as many strange people as they can meet. It really helps a lot.

Do you get paid for your hours working at the hospital?

BS: It’s purely volunteer work! I went to the University of Akron and Akron Law School, and I’m a retired court magistrate with domestic relations courts. But Maddie – she works for biscuits.

Being such an animal lover, you must have grown up with dogs, right?

BS: I didn’t grow up with dogs, actually. The first one I got was on Christmas Day in 1980.

I found him not far from Firestone High School. Well, it was more like he found me. I went on a walk, and there was this little dog sitting on a step. He came and ran toward me.

His collar was plain with nothing on it. I gave him a pet and turned to walk home, and he followed me the whole way back. I tried to take him back to the high school so he could find his way, but he wouldn’t leave my side.

How would you describe Maddie’s personality?

BS: Maddie’s very laidback and easygoing.

The only time she’ll bark is at 5 a.m. when they deliver the paper because she sleeps right by the door.

What is Maddie’s guilty pleasure besides volunteering and spending time with you?

BS: If you have a biscuit, she’ll go home with you. All the nurses’ stations have treats, and she remembers which nurses have given her biscuits in the past. If they say, ‘Come on, Maddie. Let’s get a biscuit!’ she’ll take off with them. But as soon as she’s done eating, she’ll turn around and run right back to me.

Tell me about your two other dogs that also worked at Akron Children’s Hospital.

BS: I had Maggie and Ben. They were both Labradors too. Ben was the most famous at the hospital. He did a lot of work with preschool kids who were outpatients with leg problems — all of them wore leg braces and some had arm crutches or walkers. After Ben passed away, they put a plaque up in the physical therapy area with his picture. All the kids loved him.

What’s been your most memorable moment working with the Doggie Brigade?

BS: One time, I was walking down the hall with Maggie, and a bunch of little kids came from different rooms to see my dog. They started petting her and wanted her to sit down. Instead of addressing Maggie by name, I just said, “Sit!”, and ALL the kids quickly sat down. It was like a drill team, it was so funny. I even had the ladies nearby cracking up.

What do you and Maddie like to do when you’re not at the hospital?

BS: We go on tons of walks together, even down to Summit Mall. Maddie also does the reading program at the Cuyahoga Falls Library. Second- and third-grade kids come in on Saturdays and read to the dogs. Now all I have to do is teach Maddie to read to the kids!

“Circling the Waggins” / The second novel by Cayr Ariel Wulff /

“It had been a rough couple of years in our home, and I had discovered with my first book how cathartic it could be to write,” says Cayr Ariel Wulff, an author, artist and animal advocate. “It was like therapy to sit down and pour out all of my thoughts and feelings onto the pages.”

For the last 26 years, Wulff has volunteered in animal rescue.

In 2007, she released her first book, “Born Without a Tail,” which chronicles the true-life adventures of two animal rescuers living with an ever-changing house full of pets.

This past year she unveiled her second novel, “Circling the Waggins: How 5 Misfit Dogs Saved Me from Bewilderness,” which follows Wulff and her companion, Dalene, as they maneuver through one unexpected pet incident after another while living in a cabin in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Although both books are memoirs, she explains that they are very different. “Born Without a Tail” tells the stories of 20 animals who have shared her life. While it’s chronological, each chapter stands alone and is devoted to a single animal.

“ ‘Circling the Waggins’ is more of a story with a beginning and an ending. It tells the story of some 27 animals over the course of two years, who lived in our home and took root in our hearts,” she says. “Between the two books, I learned that readers prefer an ordered timeline, and I learned to relax more in my style of writing.”

Like her first novel, “Circling the Waggins” is an incredibly personal story. Its depiction of the ups and downs of sharing your life with animals has reached out to those who have experienced the same heartache and joy. According to Wulff, some of what happens in the story was very difficult to write about and the memories were bittersweet.

“The hardest part was being introspective and honest with myself about what I was thinking and feeling about the various experiences as I related them. It’s hard to admit your faults and failures, but I had to own them,” she says. “It was a challenge to write about those difficulties without making it so sad that nobody would want to read it.”

Wulff has recently completed a guide for people who want to do more for animal rescue awareness but don’t know where to start.

She plans to release the new book, “How to Change the World in 30 Seconds: A Web Warrior’s Guide to Animal Advocacy Online,” later this year.

“I wish that more people would realize that every voice counts.

We are all so powerful, if we just speak out,” she says. “There are things that everyone can do that take less than 30 seconds a day and can mean the difference between life and death for a shelter animal.”

According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Ohio has some of the weakest laws for prosecuting animal cruelty. Wulff believes a key step in making Ohioans more aware is to have better

“Our elected officials work for us, but we have to tell them what we want them to do and insist on better laws.”

But, she says, everything starts in the home, and we must take care of our pets from the minute we open our arms and hearts to them.

“Having a pet isn’t all cuddles and kisses. It’s a promise to care for the pet and assure its wellbeing no matter what,” she says.

Celebrating with Song

/ Children’s Concert Society has been making music for Akron children since 1947. /

The Children’s Concert Society (CCS), an Akron-based volunteer, nonprofit group, began in the 1940s with big dreams and small resources.

Originally designed to be a concert hall experience for young students, CCS catered just to fifth- through eighth-graders at nearby middle schools. The price to attend a concert at the old Akron Armory was 35 cents per child. Finding instant success, the group started expanding immediately.

the Akron Civic Theatre. Students pay $5 to attend, and scholarship tickets are provided for children who would otherwise be unable to attend the program.

During this spring’s Concert Hall performances on April 17 and 18, students will see “Little Red Riding Hood,” presented by the Akron Lyric Opera Theatre.

The organization holds a special place in the heart of Carol Lewis, the current CCS president.

“My affiliation with CCS began as a child of the ‘50s in the Akron Public Schools,” Lewis says. “I participated in the Scholastic Composers Contest [sponsored by CCS], though I only received an Honorable Mention, and I attended numerous Concert Hall events.

These activities helped shape my lifelong love of music.”

Lewis taught kindergarten for over 30 years, where music was an integral part of her daily lessons. She joined the CCS board of trustees in 2007, just in time to help with the 60th anniversary events.

“I turned 66 years old on Feb. 25, so it seems we have grown up together,” she says.

The board of trustees and associate board members are volunteers who pay up to $100 in annual dues and ensure the success of the Children’s Concert Society. They attend Akron Area Arts Alliance events to stay connected to the local arts community and are encouraged to attend workshops on fundraising, volunteer initiatives and grant writing, and then report noteworthy information to the board.

Longtime board members have seen the organization evolve over the decades. The Concert Hall series is now a biannual event at

“In the beginning, Concert Hall performances were primarily orchestras and ballets,” Lewis says. “Through the years, in an effort to expose our children to a wide genre of musical experiences, other types of performances have been scheduled.” >> Over 60 years ago, the CCS added a new program to its organization. Ralph Gillman, head of music education for the Akron Public Schools, initiated the Scholastic Composers Contest. Children throughout the county were encouraged to write their own music, and the best composers would perform their winning piece at a public concert. It’s believed to have been the first program of its kind in the country.

Today, the contest isn’t limited to children in the Akron area. The CCS has received submissions from cities as far away as Orange, Solon and Cleveland.

“Children generally don’t understand about how music actually comes to be,” Lewis says.

“They must be taught about composing as part of their music education. The contest affords children the opportunity to gain an appreciation of this process by having them create original compositions.”

Each student receives a participation ribbon and certificate for submissions. First place win-

Ladies stood in key locations throughout the county soliciting donations in exchange for lollipops, and they sold over 14,000.

Another favorite fundraiser was “Sweet Melodies.” Several residents opened their homes, selected a musical group to perform and provided refreshments for guests.

Following the “mini” concert, all the guests gathered for dessert, auctions and raffles.

This year, one large fundraiser honoring The Children’s Concert Society’s 65th anniversary will be on Sat., Apr. 27 at Portage Country Club. There will be a cocktail hour with music provided by 7 Mile Isle and the University of Akron Steel Drum Band. Following a sit-down dinner, the CCS will provide a concert showcasing renowned jazz trumpeter Jack Schantz, jazz pianist Joe Augustine and the vocals of Patti LaNasa. The evening will conclude with dessert and an oral auction. Several items up for bid include a blimp ride, gourmet dinner for eight with wine pairings and a sapphire-and-diamond necklace donated by Sterling. Tickets are $65 per person for this casually elegant event.

Lewis has high hopes for both the April fundraiser and for the future of the Children’s Concert Society. The organizers hope to raise $15,000, which will allow them to expand the group’s In-School concerts.

4/23 Col. Eileen Collins: “Leadership Lessons from Apollo to Discovery” Astronaut and shuttle commander Col. Eileen Collins is a pioneer of aviation. After being the second woman to graduate from the Air Force Test Pilot School in 1990, she was selected for NASA’s astronaut program.

On her inaugural shuttle mission in February 1995, she became the first

woman to pilot a space shuttle. In July 1999, Collins achieved more milestones by becoming the first woman to command a shuttle mission and the first astronaut to pilot a 360-degree pitch maneuver. She commanded Space Shuttle Discovery’s historic “Return to Flight” mission in July 2005, before retiring. 37th Annual Sugartown Express The 37th annual Sugartown Express, in benefit of the American Diabetes Association, took place Jan. 25 at Quaker Station, raising close to $18,000 for the group. Nearly 200 guests attended the casual, after-work event featuring local business and community “celebrities” serving a traditional menu of pizza, pretzels and hors d’oeuvres. The event featured a silent and live auction, raffles, music and entertainment. New this year, guests enjoyed craft beer sampling from several renowned Northeast Ohio breweries.

Sugartown Express was founded by Madeline and Libert Bozzelli and is the longest consecutively-run ADA fundraising event in the country. Over the past 37 years, the train-themed event has raised over $800,000 to benefit the organization.

Ra’ul Umaña with BeBe and Beaner

They say pets and their owners often look alike, and Ra’ul Umaña’s pets — BeBe and Beaner — reflect his colorful, fun-loving personality.

BeBe is an 8-year-old Harlequin Macaw who Umaña calls a “clown.” Although BeBe has been spotted at Barberton’s Labor Day Parade, the annual DeBord Halloween Party and The Masque of the Red Death party at the Akron Civic Theatre, his favorite place to visit is The Peanut Shoppe in downtown Akron where he performs tricks in exchange for cashews.

Beaner is a 4-year-old Teacup Chihuahua who, Umaña says, owns more clothing than he does.

When she accompanies Umaña and BeBe to performances, she wiles away the time by allowing people to play dress-up with her.

Umaña, who lives in Akron with his partner Patti Schott, is a designer and builder whose most recent masterpiece was the designing and building of Archie The Snowman for Lock 3’s holiday display.

5 Simple Ways Anyone Can Support Animal Shelters It’s staggering to think that each year an estimated 5 to 7 million companion animals find their way into the care of animal shelters across the United States. Despite the best efforts of thousands of shelter workers, keeping up with the care of abandoned animals is a daunting task for even the most wellfunded rescue organizations. While you may not be able to donate tons of money or time, supporting animal shelters with small contributions can make a huge difference. Here are some simple ways you can help.

1. Lend Your Expertise Shelters often have limited funds to hire individuals capable of setting up websites, writing articles for newsletters, taking pictures of available pets, landscaping the grounds or providing legal advice. Consider your skill set and how you could be a valuable resource for your local shelter.

2. Get Social Shelter animals come from diverse backgrounds, and socializing them can be key in making them more attractive candidates for adoption. Animal rescue organizations often need volunteers willing to dedicate a little time to playing with a cat or teaching a dog to sit.

Jason Vanity Adams and Zito (aka ZZ) When Jason Vanity Adams lost his Black Lab mix, Onyx, five years ago, he realized his life wasn’t complete without a dog. Enter Zito, a bull terrier who was rescued from an Indiana puppy mill.

Although the dog was in poor condition — both physically and mentally, Adams, an artist and veterinary assistant from Akron, fostered Zito and nursed him back to health.

“After spending time and investing love, there was no way I could let this little treasure call anywhere else home,” he says. “Zito has been with me, as my loyal companion ever since. …

Just as I saved his life, he has, mine.”

3. Foster a Pet Since overcrowding in animal shelters is a constant challenge, many rescue organizations look for foster homes that may help socialize and prepare certain pets for adoption. Contact your local shelter and see if you qualify.

4. Turn Your Trash into Treasure Animal shelters go through lots of food bowls and towels each year. While your old blankets and dinnerware might seem ready for a trip to the dump, they could be put to good use. Think before you toss them, because your trash could be treasure to a pet in need.

Tia Stathopoulos and Charlie Butterworth Charlie Butterworth is a partying, jet-setting playboy with an attitude, and that’s why his owner, Tia Stathopoulos, loves him.

Stathopoulos, who is an economic development specialist with the City of Akron, has had Charlie for three years, and she takes this Yorkshire Terrier everywhere she goes.

He’s even flown with her on trips to Florida, Toronto and California.

She describes Charlie as a canine “Marlon Brando.” “He’s incredibly sweet but he wants things his way,” she says. “He’s even-tempered unless he thinks you’ve crossed him, and then he will tinkle you.”

Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears.

SURVIVING PET LOSS Pet ownership offers a potential for friendship that can enrich many years of a person’s life. Sadly, sharing your days with an animal also means you’ll be sharing in the pet’s inevitable death as well. A dog’s lifespan ranges from 7 to 16 years, while an average cat lives 12 to 14 years. So unless you cuddle up with a box turtle at the end of a long day (life expectancy: 50 years), it’s pretty likely you’ll one day tell your furry friend goodbye.

tabby named Lelu (aka Lelu Fantastico, aka Tinymite) to kidney failure. I’ve had some cats in my 35 years, but Lelu was my favorite feline ever — initially a stray, runt kitten my wife and I rescued from our backyard, she grew up to be a central figure in our family as we added children and pets to the household. The loss of this special little cat taught us a few things about grieving a pet, lessons I learned from my friend’s final days.

who’s passed. I’m not one to waste tears, but I’ll be the first to tell you I sobbed over Lelu.

These furry friends are, in most cases, beloved family members, and their absence leaves a very real void in the owner’s daily life.

Have a little funeral. I’m not saying you should hire a minister and buy a casket and plot (though that’s fine, if you’re so inclined). We buried Lelu in a shoebox in the backyard, said our goodbyes and my wife, kids and I dropped dirt into the grave before filling the hole. It

was a fine sendoff that offered a bit of closure.

Tell your kids. Loss of a family pet presents a valuable, though unfortunate, opportunity to discuss death with youngsters, so maybe reconsider telling your kids that Fido moved to a farm.

We let our children see their cat’s body and pet her one last time while we explained as best we could what happened. It wasn’t easy, but I feel we made the right choice.

Tari Kotewicz and Yaksha As a breeder of Bengal cats, it’s easy to see why Tari Kotewicz loves Yaksha so much.

“She’s 11 months old, and I’ve had her since she was born,” she says of the cat, who is named after benevolent nature-spirits in Hindu mythology.

Yaksha is just another high-energy member of the family, which includes Kotewicz’s two sons, Brandon and Kenny, her significant other, Raynard Packard, and her 4-year-old “stepdaughter,” Magdalena.

“Yaksha is constantly in trouble but that’s part of her charm,” she says. “And she’s a frequent visitor to The Packard Institute in Akron as part of their pet therapy program.”

The family also has five other Bengals, two dogs and two Fennec Foxes.

An adult cat can run about 12 miles per hour, and can sprint at nearly 30 miles per hour.

We, The Pet People One reluctant pet person ponders the furry friends who populate his life Family lore has it that, in my father’s bachelor days, the man proudly owned a dog named Muffy, a yappy little shih tzu whose staunch refusal to be housebroken earned no love from the woman my father was dating. When Dad finally worked up the gumption to take a knee and request his beloved’s hand in marriage, she agreed to spend her remaining days with my father but, alas, could not extend the same offer to Muffy. The caveat issued pretty much boiled down to “It’s me or the dog.”

And so, possessed of a heavy heart, my father found his pee-prone dog a new home with new pieces of furniture for Muffy to mercilessly defile, and only then was he free to trade nuptials with his new

bride. A few years later, the dogless couple had a son, and that’s the story of how I got here.

Which is to say, Dear Reader, that this pet stuff matters.

Consider this: Had my father chosen Muffy over my mother, there would be no “Rodney Wilson” to write this piece.

You’d be poring over an in-depth exposé of Warehouse District Guppy Farming or a Healthy Hamster Buying Guide right now.

I mean, can you even imagine?

Luckily, after fate’s pendulum swung in my direction and away from poor Muffy, I enjoyed a childhood enhanced by friend-

ships with family pets that didn’t end in “Sophie’s Choice”-like doggie dilemmas.

There were always fish like Jake the Snake and Stoney in the tank, a mother-daughter pair of tabbies named Fluffy and Binky on a bed, short-lived hamsters like Janet and Frank in that clear plastic ball thing and an unbroken line of stray turtles from the lake down the hill (all named Pokey).

Ask an adolescent me if we were “pet people,” with the species hoarder implications, and I’d surely have taken a break from picking feline hairs off my sweater to balk, but it’s because I couldn’t fathom an alternative — I simply could not comprehend that some people enjoy lives devoid of animal companionship.

Now, as I look over to see our tuxedo cat Sullivan curled up on my tween daughter’s lap or glance at Charlie the ancient chocolate Lab sleeping a few yards from my feet, I realize I still can’t comprehend such a thing. The truth of the matter is, we’re pet people. I am a pet person.

Gone to the Dogs “Pet person” is often used as a synonym for “dog lover.” It makes sense — with their pathological need for love and sternums just begging to be squeezed into a sleeveless argyle sweater, canines reflect many of the traits humans like to see in our own species. (If you’ve ever experienced a cat’s chilly indifference or suffered arm-length scratches from trying to clothe a feline, you know the plight of cat people is an altogether different beast.)

But while our pet-prejudice toward dogs is understandable, it’s not universal; many pet owners are not, in fact, dog people. It’s true! There are rat people, snake people, bird people ... and there are “anything but dog” people, which is how you’d describe my family during my formative years.

Blame it on Muffy’s lingering memory or the pursuit of that miniature poodle who, when I was in first grade, made me lose my lunch on the arms of a neighbor rescuer, but no dog enjoyed a place in my childhood home. The closest I got to canine companionship was an occasional game of tennisball catch through a chain link fence with Bandit, the mint-breathed terrier next door. A few of my aunts and uncles owned dogs, but those beasts were imprisoned in far back bedrooms when I was on premises, out of concern for their prone-todog-induced-panic nephew.

My eventual dog ownership was not inevitable.

But Charlie, our chocolate Lab, isn’t just any dog.

Seemingly doomed to dislike by his predecessor, a barky beagle whose utter contempt for newborn sleep earned him a new home, his hangdog personality nonetheless won my family over. Charlie’s not perfect — to the contrary, it’s his laundry list of imperfections that somehow combine to define his appeal: He’s epileptic with a tendency to destroy the kitchen once every couple of months; he has a persistent stink that survives every bath and grooming effort; he randomly runs away a few times a year; he lays around 99 percent of the time, always settling his 70-pound frame in the busiest walkway; and he drools — there is seriously so much drool.

Owning Charlie has solidly placed us into the “dog people” sub-category of pet lovers. We still have other family pets, to be sure. We’ve owned as many as four cats at one time, have a miniature angora she-bunny named Kenny Rogers, and my wife just

brought home a bag of goldfish this morning — but Charlie’s ushered us into the dog hair-matted inner circle of animal companionship.

If we’re looking for some human socialization, we can hop in the car and head for the dog park; if we need some exercise and fresh air, we grab a leash and take a stroll around the neighborhood; if we want to talk about patchy hair loss and persistent dermatitis, we take him to a pet superstore to chat with fellow dog people.

Not that we do any of these things with any real frequency — Charlie’s about as keen on leaving his spot in the walkway as his borderline-agoraphobic owners are on leaving the house. He’s a perfect writer’s dog, content to dream of bygone days as a breeder’s cherished stud while I sit across the room making up adventures that pale in comparison to Charlie’s real life experiences.

For the Love of Fur With a houseful of animals in constant need of cleaning, food and sleeveless argyle sweaters, I sometimes pause and wonder why the hell our species, with our hard-won ranking at the top of the food chain, would choose to voluntarily tether ourselves to life forms that consider the kitchen garbage can a treasure trove of magic and undiscovered mystery.

In these moments, my eyes will drift back to Sullivan the cat, providing unwavering companionship to a very under-the-weather little girl.

My gaze will shift to Charlie, whose inconvenient positioning in our walkway forces us to slow down and run a hand across his eternally-greasy scalp.

And before it’s even asked, I have the answer to my “Why?” question: We need pets to stop us with a saggy-eyed look, to occupy our laps and keep us sitting instead of running to the next thing — to just be there.

Because for all our Homo sapiens hubris, with technological advances and senselessly complicated schedules, we can’t seem to evolve out of our one true weakness: We need these furry friends. “She was given to my younger daughter, Allie, after she thoroughly enjoyed caring for her own egg — and the subsequent hatching of a chick — in her kindergarten class,” says Michelle, Allie’s mom.

Today, 10-year-old Allie and her 12-year-old sister Grace care for the chicken at their Stow home along with Michelle and their dad, Rich.

“Cutie loves to be let out of her coop to roam around our yard and forage for bugs and worms,” she says. “She loves to ‘sing’ when we’re out visiting with her. Also, due to her laying an egg per day, we always have plenty of fresh eggs to eat.”

Chickens are sociable animals. They form firm friendships and avoid chickens they do not know.

How to provide special care for your aging pets.

I’s impossible to miss the bounce in Dutchie’s step as the 15-year-old stag red miniature pinscher walks with her caretaker, Sarah Lane, along her Cuyahoga Falls neighborhood sidewalks. Her daily two-mile jaunt is good medicine, says veterinarian Sharmyn Clark, who emphasizes that mild daily exercise helps relieve stiff and achy joints common in senior pets.

Likewise, when Roscoe, a 20-year-old orange-and-white cat affectionately nicknamed “Big Man” by his owners Sean and Jen McMonagle, gets hand-delivered to a windowsill, “he thinks he’s king for the day,” says Sean, ever mindful of Roscoe’s feline pride and instincts.

Adam Rosenberger and Hank Adam Rosenberger’s dog, Hank, is a Chocolate Lab who loves getting attention from just about anyone.

“Hank knows he’s a cute dog with big brown eyes, and he uses that to his advantage when he’s done something he shouldn’t have, like eating half of my bathroom door,” Rosenberger says.

The human resources generalist rescued Hank in February 2010 when he was two years old, and he says Hank loves the water near their Portage Lakes home.

“When Hank isn’t working on getting a good headscratching or jumping off of the dock to retrieve his toy, you can find him passed out in a patch of sun, napping the time away,” Rosenberger says.

Dogs can smell about 1,000 times better than humans.

As pets’ aches and ailments creep up with age, their caretakers can do plenty to ease them through their senior years with comfort and dignity. Depending on their size, dogs live anywhere from 12 to 14 years and beyond and indoor cats live an average of 18 years, says Clark, whose Rainbow Bridge Pet Hospice and Senior Care in Northeast Ohio practice specializes in geriatric, hospice and mobile pet care. Age, however, is just a number for some pets, says Clark noting that a couple of her feline clients have reached the 25-year mark.

Like their furry counterparts, parakeets, lovebirds, canaries and some cockatiels live well into their teens while macaws enjoy a lifespan that can stretch into their 80s, says veterinarian Gary Riggs, who is board certified in avian practice and works at the NorthCoast Bird & Exotic Specialty Clinic, Barberton Veterinary Clinic and The Animal Clinic of Wadsworth.

So which health problems affect elderly pets most often, and how can their owners help them manage comfortably through their golden years?

Weary bones Arthritis inevitably strikes senior dogs, cats and birds, and it’s the most prevalent health condition elderly canines face, Clark says. After age 10, dogs show telltale signs of osteoarthritis: limping, short steps and slowness standing up and lying down. While senior cats display fewer outward signs of arthritis, which affects their spines, they often avoid taking painful leaps or walking up and down stairs. Geriatric birds also suffer from arthritis, sometimes detectable by reduced activity, says Riggs.

Both Riggs and Clark say simple measures can relieve senior pets’ arthritic pain. For example, glucosamine, an antiarthritic medicine, helps reduce inflammation and joint discomfort in cats and dogs. Likewise, easing senior pets’ navigation and helping them rest comfortably do wonders.

McMonagle, Chef de Cuisine at Rosewood Grill in Hudson, spares Roscoe the discomfort and defeat of jumping to high spots around the house.

He gently lifts Roscoe to the sofa for an afternoon nap and to his favorite perches, such as the coffee table.

“I pick him up and let him know that it’s all good,” McMonagle says. “If you’re going to have another living being in your house, you want to make sure they’re comfortable and happy.”

Rosemary Reymann and Don Schmid, with Princess Anne Serena, Daughter of Queen Rosemary of Highland Square; Alvin and Samson Several years ago, Rosemary Reymann was mourning her tuxedo, Stumpy the Mighty Cat, a feline with no tail and 20 years of interesting adventures.

A year later at a pet rescue, she found another tuxedo who “took away the sorrow, with her sweet cuddly ways.” She named her Princess Anne Serena, Daughter of Queen Rosemary of Highland Square.

When Reymann and Don Schmid were visiting PAWSibilities, Humane Society of Greater Akron, they met Alvin, a handsome tuxedo with no tail, just like the beloved Stumpy. They left but Reymann couldn’t stop thinking about Alvin, and several months later, the couple adopted him.

In January 2012, Reymann and Schmid were at a pet store and “saw this adorable little tuxedo looking up at us.”

“We were both taken by his personality, then noticed that his back legs were sticking straight up,” Reymann says. “There was a sign that said ‘Don’t adopt this cat if you feel sorry for it.’ Don decided right then that he wanted to adopt him.”

The nose pad of each cat has ridges in a unique pattern not unlike a person’s fingerprints.

Flippy, the sole survivor of his litter, was born without hip sockets, which makes his back legs flip when he climbs over objects. The couple adopted him and changed his name to Samson.

“Don’t tell Sammy that he’s disabled,” she says. “He has developed powerful upper body strength and moves like a gymnast, running in his own unique fashion. … He’s a powerful little guy who makes us laugh every day.”

“Dutchie’s health and comfort are a priority,” says Lane, who also provides glucosamine to Dutchie. “I see every day with Dutchie as a blessing.”

Clark says comfy bedding, litter boxes, water and food bowls placed at ground level, as well as ramps, relieve elderly pets as they go about daily life.

“One of the biggest things we can do for kitties and dogs is to provide them an orthopedic-type bed. Laying all night makes joints stiffer. I always stress making bedding comfortable,” says Clark, adding that inherently noble cats might dismiss a cushy new bed “just because.”

Caretakers of senior birds can provide their feathered loved ones with home comforts such as broad platforms for food, water and sleeping, and padded perches, says Riggs, who also recommends anti-inflammatory medication for arthritic birds.

Conditions, cures and compassion Signaled by frequent drinking and urination, kidney failure commonly affects senior pets. If caught early, kidney disease can be tempered by diet, which Clark says could “make a pretty big difference in cats.”

Likewise, hyperthyroidism, often recognizable in hungry felines that eat excessively yet lose weight, is 95 percent treatable by way of a radioactive iodine injection, Clark says.

Heart disease, another condition prevalent among elderly pets, often goes undetected. Quick, heavy breathing in cats or coughing in dogs provide clues to heart conditions, which Clark says are more treatable in dogs than cats. Riggs says that bird owners who serve a heart-healthy diet to their feathered pets will help prevent hardening of their arteries. “It’s one of the biggest things you can do for birds,” Riggs says. “Diet is critical, especially as birds get older.”

Cancers, liver disease, chills from thinning coats, cataracts and other conditions underscore the fact that it’s not easy getting old. Providing a cancer-stricken pet with pain relief, a cataract-inflicted canary with night lighting, a frail pup with a warm sweater or a boney cat with a heating pad can transform pets’ challenging senior days into golden glory days.

LinCourt Vineyards 2009 Pinot Noir and 2011 Chardonnay LinCourt Vineyards was established in 1996 when Bill and Carol Foley purchased a dairy farm and converted a barn on the property to start their winery. Located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, LinCourt Vineyards has ideal grapegrowing conditions for its awardwinning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.

I chose the 2011 LinCourt Chardonnay, Steel because unoaked Chardonnay has been a trend for a while, and this wine is an excellent example. When LinCourt made this unoaked Chardonnay, the company had no idea it would end up being its most popular wine due to its aromas of tropical fruits like kiwi, mandarin and honeycomb. On the palate, the wine is crisp with notes of lemons and green apples. This unoaked Chardonnay is excellent as an aperitif and pairs very well with grilled chicken, fresh fish, scallops or salmon. It retails at $20.99.

The Foleys named their winery in honor of their two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. Leslie Renaud, LinCourt’s winemaker for the last three years, looks to produce wines of exceptional finesse. The vineyard’s staff members practice sustainable methods in all of their farming, winemaking and business practices. The end result of these practices is quality wines that are delicious.

Each spring, arguably one of the craft beer world’s most prized offerings rears its delightful head: Founders’ Kentucky Breakfast Stout or, better known by its initials, KBS.

Founders’ co-owners Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers both had reliable jobs when they decided to open a brewery.

After some initial challenges, which included creating balanced beers but nothing earth-shattering to separate them from the norm, the brewery was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was at this point that the team decided to brew the kind of beer that got them excited about brewing in the first place: complex beers blossoming with flavor.

KBS is a perfect example. It’s a delicious imperial stout overflowing with a tremendous amount of chocolate and coffee intensity that will leave any beer lover craving more.

Founders, however, doesn’t stop there when creating this highly-anticipated beer. KBS is aged in oak bourbon barrels for a year resulting in a satisfying bourbon taste that lingers on with each sip.

KBS has held the #4 spot on Ratebeer’s Best Beers in the World for several years running and currently holds a rating of 100. So keep on bugging your local fine craft beer establishment to find out when they plan to shelve this gem. KBS comes in four-packs and typically retails around $22. A Taste of China on West Market Street >>

As my fortune cookie stated, “There are no limitations in imagination,” and Chin’s Place in Akron is certainly full of imagination. Being a Chinese food enthusiast, I’ve had my fair share of good and bad dishes, and the food here is definitely good. After you’ve tasted Chinese food at a lot of places, most of it starts to taste the same but the food at Chin’s has new textures and flavors I’ve never experienced before.

I started the meal with a cup of wonton soup, and before taking a bite, I braced myself for the salty chicken noodle taste I’ve experienced before. But this was different. The broth was bursting with exotic flavors with just enough kick to surprise my unsuspecting taste buds.

The noodles weren’t bland or eggy, and the pork was sweetly marinated, which was a nice contrast to the broth.

For the entrée, I sampled the Sesame Chicken and the Chicken and Shrimp Bird’s Nest, neither of which disappointed. The sesame chicken was bright orange with crisp breading on the outside and juicy meat on the inside, and the sauce wasn’t too thick or goopy to overwhelm the chicken. Again, the flavors didn’t match up to the sesame chicken I’ve tasted at other restaurants, but that wasn’t a bad thing at all. It was served on a bed of vegetable stir-fry in the same sauce, which could have easily been a delicious standalone dish.

When the server first placed the bird’s nest on my table, it looked too pretty to eat. A generous helping of steamed chicken, shrimp and Chinese veggies filled an intricately woven bowl of crispy Chinese noodles, garnished with a flower-shaped carrot. Everything inside the bowl was steamed to tender perfection, and the crunchy noodles provided a perfect contrast in texture.

In the summer, the restaurant offers outdoor dining in its flower and vegetable garden, which supplies most of the herbs and vegetables for its spring and summer menu.

Be Waterwise It’s possible to create a beautiful landscape and be kind to the environment even with a busy schedule and while staying within budget. “All it takes is a bit of planning and a few low-maintenance strategies,” says gardening expert and author Melinda Myers.

Myers recommends these five strategies to create a low-maintenance ecofriendly landscape this season.

Save money on the water bill, time spent watering and this precious resource: water. Start by growing drought-tolerant plants suited to your growing environment. Once established, they’ll only need watering during extended dry spells. Mulch with shredded leaves, evergreen needles, woodchips or other organic matter to conserve moisture, reduce weeds and improve the soil as they decompose.

Fertilize with a low-nitrogen fertilizer, like Milorganite, that promotes slow steady growth instead of excessive greenery that requires more water. Plus, it won’t burn even during drought.

Recycle Yard Waste in the Landscape Minimize the amount of yard waste produced, reuse what can be in other areas of the landscape and recycle the rest as compost. And better yet, implementing this strategy will save money and time spent buying and transporting soil amendments, since it will be created right in the backyard.

hen it comes to your well-being, it’s important to relax, de-stress and enjoy the few hours of downtime you have each day (or each week, as the case may be). But how? You can go to the movies or the mall, or you can watch TV, but I have a much better idea.

Sound too good to be that easy? Not really. Water features that are designed and installed correctly only require a few minutes of attention each week, with an hour’s worth of work in the spring and again in the fall.

Water bowls planted with aquatic plants only need to be watered once every week or so because the hole-less bowl holds so much more water. Many annual, tropical and perennial flowers are also considered aquatic plants such as Blue Water Forget-Me-Not, Taro, Cardinal Flower, most irises and Creeping Jenny.

Re-envisioning and Re-purposing ZeroLandfill’s partnerships reduce our local carbon footprint.

They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and this most certainly rings true when it comes to the mission of ZeroLandfill.

This award-winning upcycling program held seasonally in Akron supports the supply needs of local artists and arts educators while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity.

Since 2006, the ZeroLandfill project team has partnered with the architectural and interior design community to divert over 882,000 pounds of expired specification samples from local landfills and re-purpose them back into the community where they may hold value for other audiences.

Materials often include carpet tiles and books, paint decks and laminate chips, upholstery swatches, vinyl flooring samples, tile and stone samples, wall-covering books, glass and metal samples, three ring binders and stock photo books.

“Anyone involved with ZeroLandfill locally will tell how great this rather rudimentary idea has become in our design community,” says Katie Hauser, treasurer of the International Interior Design Association’s Ohio chapter.

That organization has become the vehicle with which the ZeroLandfill program is launched in new markets. “Our local Cleveland/Akron city center has long been a supporter of the program, and when we absorbed the day-to-day operations of the program, it seemed a logical time for me to become personally involved,” she says.

ZeroLandfill relies on the help of volunteers who manage the program from finding space to marketing. First, expired samples and materials are gathered from interior designers and architects. Next, sorting and

weighing by material type, removing carpet samples from books, recycling paper from binders and stacking materials must be completed as they arrive. Community members are then invited to pick up the free materials for their use. Materials that aren’t chosen are kept intact and re-used for other purposes.

“I really love that International Interior Design Association is helping to bring together so many walks of life, different professions and generally intertwining folks that otherwise would have never come into contact with one another,” Hauser says.

This past February ZeroLandfill Akron collected 5,000 pounds of material. “We see many of the same faces in Akron from year to year, and anticipation for the program each year is continuing to become more and more prevalent,” she says. “We, as design professionals, take great pride in the Northeast Ohio roots that this program has and couldn’t be prouder or more excited

to see the success that has grown from the ideas of a few of our own community members and colleagues.”

While the program has operated in Akron for the last five years, it’s been a part of the Cleveland community for twice as long.

The team will pick up shop once again in Garfield Heights come August.

Dear Readers, “We believe in the power of a woman’s heart …” These words begin our Go Red For Women Declaration that celebrates the national 10th anniversary of the Go Red For Women movement.

As we commemorate our seventh Go Red For Women anniversary in the Akron community, we would like to thank you for helping us share the power of a woman’s heart and the importance of heart health with your families, friends and coworkers.

Through your support and willingness to embrace Go Red For Women, the American Heart Association has been able to empower women to renew their commitment to health. Throughout the year, the American Heart Association has partnered with businesses, hospitals and organizations to help educate women about their connection to heart disease and stroke, as well as provide them with resources that may lead to improved health.

The statistics show 330 fewer women are dying each day, now that the message of Go Red is part of communities across the country.

More women in our community are learning CPR, more are taking nutrition seriously and more are increasing their exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Still, 64 percent of women who die of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms. It is so important to continue to share the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and that we can take steps to reduce our risk.

Over the past 10 years, the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement has been the driving force of heart health for millions of women. Special thanks to the Akron Life Go Red For Women special section for sharing the stories of our local champions and survivors. Their strength and courage to better their health habits prove that heart diseases and strokes do not have to define us … after all, that is the power of a woman’s heart.

Becoming a member of the Go Red For Women movement’s Red Tie Society was important to Rob Briggs, Chairman Emeritus of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP, in Akron.

He first heard about the Red Tie Society from several friends who told him about the value of this men’s organization, which supports and advocates for the heart health of women in their lives.

WARNING SIGNS If you know these warning signs, you can save a life.

“I’m concerned about anything that compromises human life, especially heart disease and cancer,” he says.

“Fortunately, I don’t have heart disease. … From my step father to several members of my work family, I have seen how the disease can adversely impact family and friends.”

“Men must be equal partners in fighting this insidious disease. The more who collaborate, the greater likelihood there is in finding cures,” Briggs says. “I hope that my involvement, however limited, may help bring greater awareness and raise more money.”

When men invest $1,000 in a membership in the Red Tie Society, the money is used to help fund research grants needed to find a cure for cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer of women.

It also helps to increase awareness and prevention.

Heart Attack

Stroke

Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

Spot a stroke F.A.S.T.:

Discomfort in other areas of your upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred, is he or she unable to speak, or is the person hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “the sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Sudden loss of responsiveness – The person gives no response to tapping on his or her shoulders.

No normal breathing – The person does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five seconds.

Time to call 9-1-1 – If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get him or her to the hospital immediately.

Coeds go Red

Candace Campbell Jackson supports the Go Red campaign on campus.

Several years ago, Olivia Demas was co-chairing the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign and visited the office of Candace Campbell Jackson.

Jackson, who is the Vice President and Chief of Staff at The University of Akron, recognized Demas’ contagious enthusiasm and joined the movement herself.

This year, Jackson is the chair of Go Red For Women.

“One in three American women will suffer from heart disease in their lifetime; it’s the No. 1 killer of women in the United States,” she says. “That’s a staggering statistic and shouldn’t go unnoticed.”

Members of The University of Akron sorority Alpha Phi lend a helping hand at Coeds Go Red.

The women of The University of Akron learned about the Go Red For Women movement and how to take charge of their heart health at the Coeds Go Red program, Feb. 27.

This event, set in The University of Akron’s Student Union Ballroom, provided participants with a free hearthealthy lunch and free blood pressure and BMI screenings from the College of Nursing. They entered drawings to win gift cards and visited the Macy’s Philosophy booth and others for a quick “pick-me-up.”

Heart survivor Zöe Sapienza and her father, Neil — interim dean of The University of Akron Wayne College — spoke at the event about Zöe’s congenital heart defect and how wonderfully she is doing now.

Jackson supports the Go Red For Woman campaign by lending a hand with the Coeds Go Red program at the university. Supported by Meg Matejkovic, associate dean at The University of Akron School of Law, Coeds Go Red brings awareness to the student body.

“I’ve been very impressed with Meg’s leadership of this event and have been glad to assist her in rallying additional university support,” she says. “This event has now grown into an opportunity for university students and employees alike to focus on heart health and a healthy lifestyle.”

Jackson says the Coeds Go Red program provides participants with the latest knowledge, education and awareness so they can make informed decisions about how to minimize their risk of heart disease.

“Being informed can save lives,” Jackson says. “We’re committed to educating as many people as possible so that we have a better chance of winning the fight against heart disease.”

Living a Legacy Mona Sarkar is determined to fulfill her father’s last wish.

On May 12, 2010, Mona Sarkar’s father, Sunil Sarkar, passed away on his 72nd birthday from a sudden heart attack.

A year later, his daughter — a client advisor in the Wealth Management Services department at FirstMerit — was going to take the day off from work to mark the first anniversary of her father’s passing, but instead, she attended the Go Red For Women event with some of her colleagues and friends.

“My first Go Red luncheon heightened my awareness of issues that women are faced with: juggling careers, high levels of stress and managing our families — just to mention a few,” she says. “It also challenged me to think about this: As women, when and how do we take care of ourselves?”

Sarkar was the last person in her family to see her father alive. His last words to her were, “Daughter, go home and take care of your kids.”

“When asked why I accepted the invitation to chair the 2014 Go Red event, my answer is very simple,” she says.

“On May 12, 2010 the importance of women and men taking good care of our hearts became very personal to me. If I’m going to do what my father asked and take care of my kids, I need to take care of myself first.”

Over the next year, Sarkar’s challenge to women is to not just hear about the importance of heart health, but to act on it so we can take care of our kids and families, by first taking care of ourselves.

Fortunate

A Series of Fortunate Events

Whether it’s due to luck or faith, Linda Lee is alive to share her story.

In early 2012, Linda Lee was having shortness of breath, a problem she attributed to years of smoking. Just a year earlier, she and her sister, who lives in Dallas, Texas, had made a pact to quit together.

“We would keep each other informed and encouraged about our progress and would reward ourselves for our accomplishments,” she says. “We both agreed that prayer would be our best tool for being able to be successful. Through prayer and helping each other, we were able to quit cold turkey.”

Concerned about Lee’s breathing problems, her physician diagnosed her with COPD and prescribed a medication to help her control it. During a follow-up appointment in April 2012, the doctor did an electrocardiogram and determined that Lee had a problem with her heartbeat. She was immediately taken to the hospital.

“The doctor also told me that [his office] had left me a voicemail message canceling my appointment,” she says. “Amazingly I went straight to the doctor’s office after work even though there was enough time for me to go home first. Because I never went home, I never received the message. God was already working on my behalf and preparing me for what was to come.”

The next day, after a series of tests, it was determined that three of Lee’s arteries were blocked and that bypass surgery was necessary.

Although she doesn’t have a family history of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure is prominent in her family, and she takes medicine for high cholesterol.

After completing cardiac rehab at Akron General, Lee joined the Tallmadge Recreation Center to stay active.

Today, she exercises three to five times a week to improve her endurance and her breathing.

Though she never considered herself to be overweight, since her surgery, Lee has lost more than 2 percent of her body weight which, in turn, puts less stress on her heart. Adamant about eating healthy, maintaining her new weight and staying heart healthy, Lee now eats more fruits and vegetables, cooks her foods differently and reads labels at the grocery store.

“I’m excited about trying new recipes and new ways of preparing foods, and I challenge myself to cook creatively and healthy at the same time,” she says.

In addition to adopting healthier habits, this experience has taught Lee that she has family and friends who love her and will be there for her in times of need.

“The relationships we build with God and others are so important. Each day that I wake up is more precious than the day before,” she says. “I always knew there would be obstacles in life, but what I learned is how to respond to those obstacles. I choose to be positive and thankful for whatever I have to face in life because I know that with God, all things are possible.”

Valuable Time is muscle

LouAnn Crabtree learns a valuable heart health lesson.

LouAnn Crabtree is a nurse in the Cardiovascular Prep and Recovery department at Akron City Hospital, which is why it’s hard to believe she ignored the warning signs of heart disease when she experienced them herself.

“My symptoms started on a Saturday morning in August while I was making waffles for my family,” she says. “I had a sudden pain in my left shoulder and started sweating profusely. The pain at that time didn’t radiate anywhere but continued to be constant.”

Crabtree had recently undergone an esophageal dilatation so she thought the pain was due to that. She took some heartburn medicine and continued making breakfast. Although the sweating stopped and the pain wasn’t as severe, it never went entirely away. She went about her Saturday activities, hoping the pain would go away and she wouldn’t have to “deal with it.”

“On my prior cardiac event in 1994, I had the feeling of a tight band around my chest, accompanied by shortness of breath and pain that radiated down my right arm,” she says. “My thought process this time was that the pain I was experiencing was NOT like the pain I had in 1994 so it couldn’t be my heart.”

When the pain moved to the left side of her chest, she knew something was “not quite right” but was hesitant about going to the ER because she had worked there for 14 years prior to her position in the cath lab.

“I didn’t want to go into the hospital and have it be a ‘false alarm,’” she says. “It sounds foolish to say that now, but it weighed heavy on my mind at the time.”

And, rather than calling 9-1-1, she asked her husband drive her to the hospital — an idea she now regrets.

“The paramedics are equipped with advanced cardiac life support skills and the ability to transmit medical data to the awaiting hospital,” she says. “They also have IVs and medications. They can arrive at the hospital in the shortest amount of time possible, and time is so important.”

Today, Crabtree is a survivor of a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. Although she’s always been active, she continues to exercise four to five times each week for 40 to 60 minutes.

Looking back, Crabtree advises women to remember that “Time is Muscle” — the longer you wait for medical treatment, the more damage may be occurring to your heart muscle.

“I encourage each of you to NOT delay treatment because you may feel foolish or embarrassed,” she says. “If you’re ever faced with the decision to call the paramedics or not to call them, pick up that phone and dial 9-1-1.”

Four years ago, Vicki Nolf — an emergency coding specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital — was just not feeling well.

With a family history of heart disease, she had recently undergone a stress test to determine why she was having chest pains and shortness of breath.

Although the results weren’t out of the ordinary, she wasn’t satisfied with the inconclusive answers of her EKG. Nolf was in the hospital’s Considine Professional Building when she suddenly felt that she couldn’t walk back to her office, which was on the other side of the campus. “[The warning signs] were not cut and dry but I knew something was not right,” she says. “ … Luckily I work in an ER and had my coworker, Becky Stubbs, get the assistance of Dr. Jeff Kempf who attached the Automated External Defibrillator, called Akron Fire to take me to Akron General Medical Center and gave me several baby aspirin.”

Nolf was admitted to the hospital and “again, things didn’t look too bad after a stress test” but she was asked to have a heart catheterization before considering being discharged.

“Luckily I did,” she says. “I had the heart cath on Friday and a quadruple bypass on Monday with Dr. Robert Kamienski who, by the way, walks on water.”

Embracing the American Heart Association’s Mission About 350 guests from the Greater Akron area gathered at Quaker Station on Feb. 9 for the American Heart Association’s 2013 Heart Ball to embrace the organization’s lifesaving mission. The gala, with this year’s theme, “Embrace,” was hosted to support cardiovascular and stroke research.

Attendees congratulated community health leaders, savored a delicious dinner and were entertained with music and live and silent auctions.

The Heart Ball was made possible through the generous support of the Presenting Sponsor,

Sterling Jewelers Inc. Sterling’s leaders took part in the festivities and made meaningful contributions to Open Your Heart, a special appeal for continued pediatric cardiac research.

In testimony to the power of funded pediatric research, Sarah and Chris Plant — parents of Rebekah, who was born with congenital heart defects — spoke about their experience in raising a young heart survivor.

The event honored Heart Champions: Robert DeJournett, Summa Health System; Dr. Robert A. Schweikert, Akron General Health

System, and Dr. Philip Smith, The Heart Center at Akron Children’s Hospital. Additionally, GO2 Advertising was awarded the Distinguished Corporate Leader award.

This year’s black-tie event, co-chaired by Dr. Kevin and Sharon Silver, raised approximately $240,000 for the American Heart Association’s heart and stroke research and education programs.

Other sponsors of this event included Premier Sponsor Summa Health System and Platinum Sponsor Akron General.
