During our July trip to Russia, one of the many historic sites visited by our University of Akron retirees and friends travel group was the Palace of Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great.

This magnificent structure, which was heavily damaged during World War II, has been restored and is said to be the finest replica in the world and a striking example of Russian Baroque architecture. The palace was enlarged and redecorated by Peter’s daughter, Elizabeth, and stretches 978 feet wide with white columns and ornate gold moldings.

Our rivers and lakes cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg made stops at many other historic sites. It also gave us the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy great Russian dishes, such as pelmeni (filled dumplings) and piroshki (baked stuffed buns.)

We came away with the knowledge that Russian citizens have the same interests, desires, fears and hopes as we do. We encourage more Americans to experience Russia.

Eating My Way Across Columbus / … And More / When I saw the words “zip line,” “Segway” and “Delicious Tour” in the email inviting me to a press tour of Columbus and the Hocking Hills, I accepted. >> As long as I’ve lived in Ohio, I’ve never been to the Hocking Hills.

I even published an antiques magazine which required me to travel almost every highway and byway in the state, but not Hocking Hills – so I was excited.

The Columbus part consisted of eating our way across town. This was the “delicious” part of the tour sponsored by Experience Columbus.

We ate at Barcelona, where we were entertained by flamenco dancers; The Seasoned Farmhouse, where we helped prepare our own breakfast; a tour and sampling at 125-year-old Thurn’s Specialty Meats; and a visit to Kolache Republic, where we tasted several varieties of kolache (a native Czech Republic dish of slightly sweet dough, stuffed with meats, nuts and cheeses, then baked).

turquoise, over a dirt-and-gravel road, and then bore into the landing platform at a considerable speed where a brake jolted us upright. As I walked from that first brief experience, I was glad they were waiting to take me back up for a second run.

Next, we made our way to lunch at the Skillet, where I was served broiled goat ribs for the first time, and then we made our way to Jeni’s for ice cream, but I had to wait out front on the sidewalk because the sight and smell of more food was too much for my already distended stomach. After this, we went on a tasting tour of craft breweries, a craft distiller of spirits (where I learned to drink whiskey) and coffee in the Short North district. We finally got a brief break before a multi-course dinner at Alana’s.

The second part of the Hocking Hills adventure was riding off-road Segways. If you don’t know what a Segway is, I’m sure you have seen one. They look like a scooter, but with a big knobby tire on each side. It looks like the thing should tip over as you get onto it, but there are computer-controlled servos that always bring the vehicle upright.

The 13 of us who made it down to the lobby and onto a bus for the trip to breakfast at Katalina’s at 7:45 the next morning were not all that hungry, but we were all eager to get on to the Hocking Hills part of the tour.

I found the Segway easy to learn and ride. Some who tried it, however, did not. You guide the thing by tilting your body in the direction you want to go, sort of like skiing. When you want to go forward, you push the handle bar forward, and when you want to stop, pull your body backward and pull the handle with you. I was told the off-road version of the Segway costs around $8,000, more than double the cost of a street version. I had an absolute blast riding over hill and dale at the breathtaking speed of 12 mph. That doesn’t seem like much, but when riding over rough and uneven terrain the speed seemed quite adequate even for a speed demon like me.

The zip line and the Segways were part of the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours development on an old golf course in the Hocking Hills; you can find more information about it at zipohio.com. I had never zip lined before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. There are two zip line courses offered: one encircles the property in four separate, but connected, shorter lines zipping through the tree canopy. I chose the other one; it’s more than a quarter-mile long and can accommodate two people on separate lines, riding parallel.

To begin the descent, we first had to climb the 85-foot tower either by winding stairs or crisscrossing ramps. At the top, attendants harnessed us into vests, and we were left hanging at a 45-degree angle off the tower. When all was set, a buzzer buzzed, and we were released into the wild blue yonder flying Superman-style at a speed of 50 mph.

The ride down was exhilarating, but short. My flying partner, a journalist from the Toronto Star, said she was afraid of heights but forced herself to make the leap, as it were. I flew with my arms out, trying to touch the leaves that zipped by me. I couldn’t reach them, but holding my arms out did slow the ride and gave me a chance to look around.

After the rides we headed to the Inn at Cedar Falls — individual cabins built in the woods, giving each cabin the feeling of isolation. The cabins don’t have telephone or TV, and cell phone reception is almost nonexistent, making them the perfect place for quiet reflection or a romantic interlude.

Though the zip line and the Segway ride were the things that initially attracted me to the tour, the entire experience was fun and enlightening and left me wanting more – more Columbus and more Hocking Hills.

Happy Hunting For me, the best part of gift-giving is “the thrill of the hunt.”

I’m the kind of person who, when you mention in March that you’ve always wanted a certain book, will make a note of it and surprise you with it as a holiday gift. When my friends and family shake their heads in disbelief and say, “I can’t believe you remembered,” that’s all the thanks I need.

When it comes to the holidays, I also enjoy giving (and receiving) presents with a clever twist — and it doesn’t have to be anything opulent. Several careers ago, I used to write my articles from home, and that year for Chanukah, my parents gave me pajamas with a note that read, “Clothes for work.”

Sometimes, it’s fun to give a present that totally throws the recipient off-guard, a gift they weren’t expecting but you know they’ll love.

When I was a child, one of my uncles always gave me presents that he really wanted for himself, like those oversized Hershey’s Kisses or plastic candy-canes filled with M&Ms. In the late ‘70s, he gave me a Mattel hand-held electronic football game, even though I had just turned 5 and didn’t know the first thing about football. I can’t put my finger on that game now (it’s prob-

ably aging, like a fine wine, in my parents’ basement) but I’ll always remember how safe and loved I felt, sitting on my uncle’s lap in the big chair at my grandparents’ house while he taught me how to play the game which, at the time, was super-duper high-tech with its beeps and red-dash players I could move with arrow keys, up and down the field, on the oval, stadium-shaped display.

In this issue of akronlife magazine, “the thrill of the hunt” was my goal while searching for gifts for our Shop Local cover story. As I drove all over The 330 to familiar stores and shops I’ve recently discovered, I was keeping you in mind, Dear Readers. I feel like your personal shopper, and I hope you enjoy what I’ve chosen.

“The Tesla Effect” / Local author creates young adult trilogy. /

Julie Drew tends to write the kind of books she wants to read.

After her historical novel, “Daughter of Providence,” was published in 2011, she began reading young adult fiction, and her next big project - “The Tesla Effect” trilogy – started taking shape.

“I feel very strongly about the power of narrative in all our lives, maybe especially the lives of young people. This was certainly true for me growing up,” Drew says. “Now I’m a teacher, with a perpetual stream of young adults flowing through my classroom, and we read and write together. I like teenagers and young 20-somethings. I like talking to them. I like listening to them. ‘The Tesla Effect’ was born of all of that.”

Drew grew up in Florida, graduated from college and earned a Ph.D. at the University of South Florida. She moved to Ohio and currently serves as an associate professor of English at The University of Akron, teaching creative writing, cultural studies and film. “Glimpse,” the first book of “The Tesla Effect” trilogy, was released in August with “Run” coming out this month and “Breathe” scheduled for release in May. Several years ago, Drew and her husband heard a lecture at Kent State in which the speaker recalled being a young boy at the time of his father’s death. From that moment, the speaker decided he would become a scientist and invent a time machine to go back and save his father’s life. That story inspired Drew to include time travel as a theme in “The Tesla Effect” books.

What if that was the beginning and the story wasn’t a pretty fairy tale? It’s an idea many books and films have explored, of course, but one that still fascinates. Once I started thinking along those lines, I started to write.”

“We are all, in part, products of our culture, our particular place in it, our time. Outside forces shape us,” Drew says. “I’ve expanded on this idea in ‘The Tesla Effect,’ made it more direct and immediate. Tesla is strong-willed, intelligent and resilient, but she is buffeted by some incredibly powerful external factors, making the changes she experiences pretty daunting.”

In addition to delving into science for topics in the trilogy, her research required her to learn how to fence and ride a motorcycle. She also consulted with a trained pilot to learn how one of her characters might land a small plane with no training whatsoever, an experience she urges readers not to try on their own.

I Am Grateful / Thoughts on thankfulness /

Well Reader, it looks like we’ve reached a momentous point in our relationship, you and I. It’s our first anniversary as Gamut Writer and Gamut Reader!

I know, it seems like just yesterday I was waxing melancholily about surprising (and being surprised by) a flock of wild turkeys in my backyard, singing the ebullient praises of my trusty Craftsman lawnmower, but that article was, in fact, written exactly one year ago. Since then, I’ve waxed melancholily about a myriad of other topics, and I’ve sung the ebullient praises of such inanimate objects as my trusty maul and the grass growing in my neighbors’ yards.

Tradition suggests a gift of paper for the one-year anniversary, but I give you one page each month, so let me break with tradition and offer you this: my thanks.

Thank you Reader for taking five minutes out of your busy life to immerse yourself monthly in the neurotic thought-springs of a struggling, young(ish) farmer/ writer. And thank you for never demanding a real point to these ramblings because, as we both know by now, I’m not quick to get around to these.

So this is what I can offer, and this is what you get: gratefulness. And what better time of year to be grateful, to extend thanks, than Thanksgiving? I’ll admit that my editor was the one who, in a random Facebook conversation, suggested this as a theme for my November piece (for which I am also grateful as, you may as well know, I sometimes struggle in my attempts to produce twelve of these a year). And I’ll also admit that I initially balked at the idea as it seemed a bit too “on the nose” for a writer who wrangles life lessons from overheard melodies and longdead trees. But then ... well, let me tell you a story.

Last month, I produced a Gamut about my overflowing appreciation for the month of October. Maybe you saw it, possibly even enjoyed it, but what you couldn’t know is that I wrote that autumnal rhapsody while seated in the waiting room of a major metropolitan hospital — my wife of almost a decade-and-a-half unconscious one floor above me, having surgery on a nasty herniated disc. I was worried about the outpatient procedure, and I was grateful for the distraction of my one-way conversation with you, Reader. I typed the 16

last period at almost the same time my pager activated, alerting me my wife was ready to be fetched and escorted back to our ragged, old home in the woods for a long, but sure, recovery.

A Gamut, like so many things, needs polishing, and the October 2014 piece was no exception to this rule, and so I edited said article while seated in yet another waiting room, this one less comfortable (in many ways) than the first, a room belonging to the ICU of the very same

I’m hesitant to go into too much detail (sorry to be withholding on our one-year anniversary), but if I may bottomline things for you: My dear wife was in a bad way, and there were very real moments I feared losing her.

She’s fine now, Reader. I swear. She’s sitting downstairs enjoying a cup of coffee, and there are lingering effects of the ordeal — effects both emotional and physical — but I’m pleased to tell you she’s okay. She survived.

And there’s that word again — thankful.

There are moments of gratitude I understand clearly, such as my overwhelming gratefulness to the doctors who saved my wife’s life — that’s an easy one. But there’s another level of gratitude I experience that’s more opaque, a bit outside the reach of my understanding.

The general gratitude I have for my wife, our children, the life we enjoy out here in the country — this is a thankfulness I’m less comfortable with, one I’m unable to really pin down.

Reader, you may live a blissful co-existence with this kind of gratitude — plenty of folks do, focusing their thanksgiving on one deity or another, the universe, the greater good. The Pilgrim Fathers, that radical congregation of Puritans we call to mind each November, had some clear ideas on the matter, and it was to this being they showed their gratefulness with a prayer-focused harvest party.

I’m not a particularly religious man, not the way I once was, but I can’t shake the sense of debt I owe to something bigger than myself, nor would I want to. If pressed, I’d probably define this gratitude as an appreciation for the collective goodness of humanity, the traits that keep us loving our friends and families and striving to be “good” ... but I really don’t know.

Cassie Schumacher

/ Founder of Wheels4Change and a Race Across America cyclist /

Cassie Schumacher understands the struggles faced every day by veterans and their families.

An avid cyclist and daughter of a Vietnam veteran, Schumacher is also the founder of Wheels4Change, a nonprofit that offers outreach, education and awareness to veterans and their families.

Schumacher’s father, Robert Schumacher, served in the Vietnam War and had been living for 20 years as a productive citizen. In 1988, after helping to organize a welcome home parade for Vietnam vets in Cleveland, something snapped inside him. Not long after that, he walked away from his life and his home and became a squatter in Alabama. He has remained homeless ever since.

A rebellious teenager, Schumacher was a heavy drinker. Eventually, her parents separated, and she made the decision to become sober, adopting cycling as a hobby. She went to school and earned a Master’s degree from Kent State University in rehabilitation counseling.

In 2010, Schumacher became one of four Ohio women to qualify for Race Across America, an epic coast-to-coast bike ride.

Later that fall, she visited her father in Alabama 18

and was inspired to start Wheels4Change. Her organization, which has raised more than $42,000 since its inception, funds sponsorship programs and hosts annual events, including Pedal For Heroes in February and Ride for the 23, a 23-mile bike ride that raises awareness of military suicides.

During the summer of 2013, after biking 2,962 miles for 12 days, 18 hours and 57 minutes, Schumacher became the first woman from Ohio to attempt and complete the Race Across America – while promoting Wheels4Change on a national platform.

Today, she is dedicated to raising awareness and helping veterans and their families with their post-war healing process.

What’s it like to have a veteran in the family who has been so affected by war and military service?

CS: It’s been such a long time; my family and I have come to accept my father’s homelessness as normal. In 1999, I had to do one of the hardest things in my life: hospitalize my father against his will. He refused treatment and had a horribly

incompetent doctor that did not attempt to treat him. No interventions were offered, and my father went AWOL.

What kind of issues have you and your family had to face?

CS: I was raised by two parents who did the best they could to give me all the opportunities in life so that I could be a successful young woman, and because of their efforts, I have always felt loved. The after-effects of the Vietnam War have severely altered my life and the lives of others who are so very important to me, and I feel that it is my responsibility to do all that I can to aid our healing process.

Your father is still alive but, in a sense, you’ve lost him. What kind of relationship do you have with him today?

CS: I created a documentary, and it captures our relationship. The main footage of my father was taken when I stayed with him at his camp he built in Alabama. I believe that it is important to meet people where they are at and respect that people have their own journey to healing. My goal for this film was to increase the public’s awareness of the longterm effects of war and to tell the stories of war-healing from veterans and their families.

You battled alcoholism at a young age.

Since healing takes time and determination, how would you describe your personal healing process compared to that of war veterans?

CS: I have attended 12-step meetings on a weekly basis since 1991, which has helped me have the life I have today. I have never been to war, but from veterans that I know that have found a deeper healing from their wounds of war, groups like 12-step meetings have helped them deal with the effects. [War veterans

should] find a support group that they can share with. Isolation is a very dangerous thing.

How long have you been cycling? What do you enjoy most about it?

CS: I started cycling shortly after I got sober, around 19. An important part of my sobriety has been to have hobbies that help me live in the present moment. When I ride, it makes me reflect on what’s truly important in life.

What is it like to participate in Race Across America?

CS: Since I was given a second chance in life, I have lived my life setting what seems like insurmountable goals and pushing myself to achieve them. … I wanted to become one of the few women in the world to compete in this grueling race. I faced a lot of adversity, but in the end I finished - and that’s what my goal was, to achieve an impossible dream.

You've helped veterans by using your role in Race Across America to promote Wheels4Change and by co-founding Pedal For Heroes. What’s your next step?

CS: I have helped create a Wheels4Change race and developmental teams to promote our fitness sponsorship programs and introduce veterans (who have never participated) to a 5K, 10K, half-marathon, marathon, triathlon and cycling. / The Courthouse Players bring legal drama to life. /

Sometimes the greatest ideas come to you in the middle of the night.

Joe Martuccio was watching “12 Angry Men” on late night television when the idea occurred to him to perform this play locally with a cast of area attorneys.

Martuccio, who serves as law director for the city of Canton, recruited fellow lawyers and judges, and the Courthouse Players was born. Five years later, the group continues to perform three or four times a year, especially during Law Week which usually falls in late April.

In May, the Courthouse Players performed “12 Angry Men” at the Roxy Theatre in Minerva to an appreciative audience. This classic courtroom drama depicts what happens when jurors meet to decide a murder case. What appears to be an open-andshut case becomes a drama as each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions come out.

The group recently added a new play to its repertoire, “The Andersonville Trial,” and performed the play last year during Zoar’s

Civil War Reenactment and at the G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula last month as part of a Civil War anniversary exhibit.

In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the actual Andersonville Trial, the group will present the play at the Carnation City Players in Alliance, June 5 and 6, and June 12 and 14. (Visit carnationcityplayers.org for details.)

Martuccio, who directs all of the plays, says the actors enjoy learning lines and, in the case of “The Andersonville Trial,” dressing in the authentic Civil War uniforms. “It’s great to play a real person who fought in the Civil War,” lawyer Jeff Jakmides says.

“The Andersonville Trial” tells the story of Henry Wirz, the only person tried for war crimes at the conclusion of the Civil War. He was in charge of the Andersonville prisonerof-war camp in Georgia where nearly 14,000 Union soldiers died of starvation, disease and exposure. The theme of this powerful play, written by Saul Levitt, questions the moral obligation to disobey orders when inhumane conditions exist.

Many of the actors in this group have been touched by the people they portray in these productions. During a trip to Georgia, Retired Judge Richard Reinbold took time to visit Andersonville and was moved by the site of 14,000 graves.

For Tom Borcoman and Jakmides, the plays reflect their real-life respective roles as a defense attorney and retired prosecutor. Their fellow actors in the Courthouse Players also represent both political parties.

The group performs for civic groups and organizations, and Martuccio adds, “There’s

not a billable hour among them.” Recently, the Courthouse Players were invited to perform at the Town Hall at Ohio Village in Columbus, in conjunction with a reenactment at the Ohio Historical Center.

Judge Robert Lavery says the group provides great fellowship among lawyers, and Reinbold says the group brings together different generations of lawyers. “And now I’m getting the gray hair,” says Anthony Flex, one of the group's younger members.

Many of the actors in the Courthouse Players have expanded their theater experience to movies. Judge Eddie Elum portrayed a judge in Doug Dearth’s film, “Underdogs,” which was shot in Stark County last year. Lem Greene appeared in Corbin Bernsen’s film, “25 Hill,” and in “Captain America,” which was shot in Cleveland. Martuccio had a feature role in the 2008 film, “Fine-Tune.”

Additional members of the Courthouse Players are John Scavelli, Jason Reese, Darrell Markijohn, Ross Rhodes, Barry Wakser, Darrell Holland and Adam Wilgus. Don Marshall, another action in the group, also serves as president of the Louisville Community Theatre and performs with theatrical groups throughout the area.

More than just a kickoff to the holiday season, the Candlelight Walk, presented by Main Street Medina and Root Candles, is a threeday celebration of sights, sounds, scents and Santa Claus, featuring more than two miles of holiday lights, 1,500 candle-lit luminaries, and the best locally owned shops and boutiques, galleries, jewelry stores and great dining.

The nine-block historic shopping district features a marvelous display of restored, Victorian-era architecture anchored by the iconic Medina Square Gazebo and 14-foot community Christmas tree. Comparisons to “walking through a Hallmark Christmas movie set” are not uncommon, and it’s easy to understand why; in 1945, RKO pictures used Medina as the setting for its film, “Hometown USA.” The free festivities begin Friday evening, Nov. 21 at 5:45 p.m., when the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Choir gets the crowd in the seasonal spirit with holiday favorites. At 7 p.m., Mayor Dennis Hanwell and Medina City Council members will flip the switch to power over 10,000 clear, LED lights installed on historic roof tops to highlight architectural details, woven through mature street trees around the Square, around the massive 11/15 Sonnenburg Station This men’s choral ensemble has performed in more than 30 different venues to audiences throughout Ohio. Community Christmas Tree and wrapping the Gazebo like spun glass. At 7:30 p.m., Celtic folk ‘n roll favorite, Mary’s Lane, will hit the stage for a rousing evening of upbeat tunes.

The celebration continues on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m., when the Holiday Parade of Lights makes its way to town and around the Square. Floats, trucks, cars, animals, humans and just about anything else imaginable are encased in lights for a spectacular parade and the arrival of Santa Claus. The fun continues when the “Light Up the Night” Christmas fireworks are launched into the sky over the historic Medina County Courthouse.

Synchronized to music, the fireworks add a magical touch to the evening. Following the fireworks, the incredible gospel music of the Prayer Warriors will fill the nine-block historic district.

On Sunday, Nov. 23, live music continues with a church and community choir showcase on the Broadway stage. Santa will be in his house for visits and photos, and Medina’s 35-plus shops and boutiques welcome shoppers. FirstMerit Bank hosts Santa’s Workshop with free crafts and activities for families. The flagship Root Candles store on West Liberty Street is a must-see, offering a huge selection of America’s Best Candle, the perfect gift. At 5 p.m., Hospice of Medina County will hold a simple and elegant Candlelight Ceremony in the Square to honor and remember those who are no longer with us.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town Castle Noel, “Holly”wood Christmas Movieland, is the largest indoor Christmas entertainment attraction in the country, and we have it right here at 260 S. Court St. in Medina.

Mark Klaus, a world-renowned Christmas collectible sculptor, was raised with a passion for classic Hollywood Christmas movies, which led to his amassing the largest collection of Christmas movie memorabilia in the world.

The Blimp That Almost Wasn’t

>> It was the hottest wrist band in town: the public’s ticket to see the christening of Wingfoot One, a new generation of Goodyear airship from its Wingfoot Lake hangar in Suffield in August.

Said to be larger, faster and more maneuverable than the much beloved blimp, this true dirigible, one of three ordered in a partnership between Goodyear and the German ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik, comes with a hefty price tag of $21 million.

Today the Goodyear blimp is one of the most recognized corporate symbols in the world. It’s also a familiar figure at many of the nation’s great sporting events.

From Super Bowls to the Olympics, from NASCAR races to horse racing’s Triple Crown, from golf to baseball, it’s not considered an important sporting event without those famous aerial shots from the Goodyear blimp.

So it’s difficult to fathom that not long ago, Goodyear almost scrapped its blimp program altogether; and, if it wasn’t for a brash public relations executive from New York City, the Goodyear blimp might not have been around to make sports broadcasting history.

>> The year was 1957, and Goodyear wasn’t quite sure what to do with its blimps. Long the heroes of wartime – during World War II, not a single vessel was lost when guarded by the hovering behemoth – but the blimps didn’t seem to have any real purpose in the Cold War 1950s.

With few supporters within Goodyear’s executive ranks, the blimp program seemed adrift. One by one, the blimps were decommissioned and disassembled; by 1959, only one lone Goodyear blimp – the Mayflower II – roamed the skies. The airship was relegated to little more than providing rides to tourists in Miami, an occasional advertising job and infrequent appearances hovering over parades or football games.

It was late 1958 when E.J. Thomas, Goodyear’s chairman of the board, and Russell “Rusty” Young, the company president, made a hire that transformed the company and saved the blimp program from oblivion. As Akron resident Howard Tolley, former director of Goodyear’s public relations services, recalls, Thomas and Young thought Goodyear’s image had become “kind of stagnant.” They wanted to add a little pizzazz to Goodyear and its public relations program.

The solution turned out to be a volatile, young public relations executive from Manhattan. As vice president of Carl Byoir & Associates, a prestigious PR agency in New York City, Robert Lane was no stranger to the rubber, aviation and media industries. At the agency, he represented B.F. Goodrich, Hughes Aircraft and California Pictures. Lane also had a strong sense of news, having started his career as a reporter for the old Pittsburgh Press and a bureau chief with the Associated Press. >> The drifting Mayflower II had found a champion in Robert Lane. Mickey Wittman, one of the new breed of PR professionals that Lane brought into the company, identified his boss as “extraordinarily dynamic,” someone with the swagger and strength to shake up Goodyear.

As Lane reorganized, rebuilt and reconceptualized Goodyear’s PR department, he discovered the solitary blimp remaining in the once-mighty Goodyear airship fleet. “And he knew, instinctively, that this airship had real possibilities,” says Tallmadge resident Tom Riley, a longtime member of the blimp team.

Lane wanted the opportunity to show what a blimp could do for Goodyear. As he told Thomas,Young, the Goodyear board of directors and anyone inside or outside the company who would listen, “A blimp is like having the only ad in Life Magazine, the only sign in Times Square or the only commercial exhibit at Disneyland.”

Not long after, Lane wrestled control of the blimp from Goodyear Aircraft and made it part of the corporate public relations team.

As Tolley explains, Lane asked for one year to prove the potential of the blimp to the company – “and the rest is history.”

Lane quickly initiated an ambitious travel schedule for the Mayflower II and assigned a PR professional to travel with the blimp, arranging maximum publicity in every town and city it visited. Newspapers, magazines and radio and television stations scrambled to cover the gentle giant in the sky.

Lane also engineered a whole new role for the blimp as a sports broadcaster. In what Tolley describes as a “Rube Goldberg arrangement,” the blimp started broadcasting sporting events.

By then a pilot, Riley remembers how CBS lugged a studio camera aboard the blimp, bolted it down and got ready to broadcast the Orange Bowl Regatta in the early 1960s. Wittman says the camera operator had to be skinny, or the blimp would never get off the ground.

With changes in camera and transmission technology, the blimp became a staple in televised sports broadcasting, and the fleet grew from the Mayflower II to the Columbia in 1963 and the America in 1969.

Today, Wingfoot One, along with its sister blimps, is a key member of Goodyear’s PR team, an important part of sports weekends and a favorite sight in the sky.

Robert Lane would be proud.

2014 AWARD Recipients Cameos of Caring, an award program of The University of Akron School of Nursing, recognizes nurses for their contribution to health care in Summit County and the surrounding region.

its inception, more than $250,000 has been raised, and this scholarship allows nursing students to focus on their studies without worrying about the cost of their education.

The annual gala, one of the region’s premier health care events, began locally in 2002 and is modeled after the successful Cameos of Caring program at The University of Pittsburgh.

The 13th annual Cameos of Caring gala, held Oct. 18 at The University of Akron Student Union, recognized 14 nurses who work at local hospitals and honored them for their outstanding care and treatment to patients and patients’ families.

Proceeds from this special event support an endowed nursing scholarship at The University of Akron. Since

On job satisfaction: “The most satisfying part of my career is spending time with patients to foster hope. For our psychiatric patients, it’s all about changing at least one aspect of their lives. I’m able to motivate and help them realize they have some control over their lives. It is a privilege to be involved in this process.”

On courage: “When you choose nursing as a profession, there is a certain amount of bravery involved. I am so proud to be a part of this profession. We are with people at their most vulnerable and help them recover.”

On special missions: This month marks Bingham’s fourth mission trip to

Haiti. During one trip to set up a clinic in a village, she met a young girl being raised by her grandmother. “When I asked what her favorite subject was, she looked at me with such directness and said, ‘All of them.’ When I asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said, ‘A nurse.’” Bingham is currently contributing to the girl’s education and plans to send her through nursing school. “This one girl will be part of Haiti’s solution, and I’m so very grateful to be a part of it.”

Now, I have the best of both worlds: I get to take care of sick neonatal and pediatric patients while flying.”

On teamwork: Whitfield recalls supporting team members who had to

take a co-worker’s daughter home to die. “There is never a feeling of being comfortable on any transports, especially this one. Our team is a lot like a close-knit family. We fight like siblings, protect our own, laugh like crazy and, of course, cry together.”

On job satisfaction: “If there ever comes a time when I don’t get butterflies in my stomach before I go on a trip, that is the day I should rethink my career choice. I work with an amazing group of people, and I couldn’t possibly do my job without them.”

Patty Russell • Aultman Hospital • Unit Director Education: RN Diploma, Massillon Community Hospital School of Nursing; bachelor’s in nursing, Walsh University; pursuing master’s in nursing, Walden University Honors and Awards: Points of Caring Nursing Manager Award (2014) On becoming a nurse: “I have two aunts in the nursing profession who inspired me. I volunteered at an extended care facility in grade school and realized I had an innate desire to care for people in times of need.”

On job satisfaction: “I have been in the manager role for many years, and it is rewarding to watch nurses evolve and make a difference in the nursing profession.

It is satisfying when they share how I positively influenced their growth.”

On a special patient: Early in her career, Russell cared for a quadriplegic who lived with his elderly mother. With the mother’s approval, Russell and another nurse washed and cut the man’s hair and shaved his facial hair. When they showed him a mirror, he cried, smiled and thanked them. His mother told the nurses that her son hadn’t been out of bed, smiled or spoken in quite some time. “Basic care provided a profound impact.”

On work-life balance: “It has been a privilege to be in the nursing profession for 38 years, with 28 years at Aultman Hospital. Encouragement and support from family members has assisted me to return for my bachelor’s and currently a master’s degree. I’m very lucky to be part of a close-knit immediate and extended family. They help provide the needed work-life balance.”

If a laugh is not what they need, then I give them a hand to hold. I love being a nurse, and I couldn’t have chosen a career that suits me more. I believe my life path has led me in this direction.”

On job satisfaction: “My days are fulfilled when I know that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life by somehow easing their pain. I consider being a nurse an honor, and I value the lessons I learn each day from my patients.”

On limitless opportunities: “Working at the infusion center, I’m involved directly with several community activities that I thoroughly support. I’ve been fortunate to have the support and supervision from several phenomenal women which has lead me to learn and grow in my career path. On a special patient: Morrison helped a woman dying of cancer to “look pretty again, one more time for her husband since all he’d seen was her sick and crying.” She did her patient’s hair and makeup before the woman’s husband came to visit that night. The patient’s other goal was to see her son one more time before she passed, but he was in the Army and stationed in Iraq. “With the help of the physicians, we contacted the American Red Cross and were able to get her son back within three days. She passed just a few days later with her family surrounding her.”

On having great co-workers: “I work with an amazing group of nurses and physicians. They’ve helped me grow as a nurse and a leader, and I am forever thankful. I truly do have a second family outside of my home.

Although he was expected to make a full recovery, he went into cardiac arrest. As the medical staff performed CPR, a nurse reached out to hold O’Karma’s daughter. “I trusted her instinctively. She made a difference. Her kindness made me consider nursing as a career so I never looked back.”

On a special patient: O’Karma once had a patient who had lost most of his lower body due to a terrible accident. “As I got to know him, we found out we had a common love of dogs, and we traded stories about our pets and their unique personalities. I think both patients and nurses usually have at least one thing in common that helps us connect on a human level.”

On life: “Nursing has helped me grow as an individual. It has taught me patience and strength. It also helps me strive to become better because I work among nurses who I respect and admire. My greatest joy in life is my family, and I look forward to the birth of my first grandchild this year.”

On job satisfaction: “The most satisfying part of my career is knowing that I helped make someone’s night a little more bearable. I like seeing my patients get well and go home.”

On a special patient: Caulder had a patient whose family brought in pictures to show her the type of person he had been, and she tried to recreate that atmosphere in his room. “I wanted him to be as peaceful as possible, and I will never forget him or his pictures celebrating a recent birthday. I was glad I was the last person to be at his side.”

On encouragement: “The nursing profession is highly regarded. People are usually impressed and appreciative of our compassion and dedication. I do feel as though nurses are their own worst enemies. We need to focus on teamwork and lifting each other up, rather than tearing down our comrades. We need to encourage each other to go above-and-beyond for our patients and their families and not lose sight of what nursing is about.”

On a special patient: While Kinter was in nursing school, she was caring

for a patient who had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. She spent the day talking with him and was his only visitor because he had no family in the area.

The next day, she learned he had passed away during the night. “As sad as I was, I felt honored to spend his last hours with him and learn about his life.”

On the health care field: “I love the diversity that nursing offers. I’ve been lucky to be employed at a great hospital, surrounded by amazing co-workers.

The positions that I’ve held have been wonderful learning experiences and have helped to mold me into the nurse I am today. I am proud to say that I am a nurse and strive every day to help make excellent patient experiences.”

Stags’ Leap Winery 6150 Silverado Trail, Napa, Calif.

The Stags’ Leap Winery was founded by the Chase family in 1893, and within two years they were making more than 40,000 gallons of wine. They named the winery after a Wappo American Indian legend that told of a stag leaping across the nearby Palisades Mountain as it eluded a group of hunters.

One of the oldest wine estates along the southern end of the Napa Valley, it has more than 240 acres, with 90 acres planted. If you know this appellation, you understand how many excellent Cabernet Sauvignon wines come from this AVA. The Stags’ Leap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent example of Cab from the Stags’ Leap District. The blend of this wine is 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 4 percent Petite Sirah, 4 percent Cabernet Franc and 2 percent Petit Verdot. According to winemaker Christophe Paubert, “The Cabernet Sauvignon has black currant, cherry and blueberry aromatics which remain distinctly bright in this inviting wine. The palate offers a layered complexity of forest floor, savory herbs and sweet tobacco that seamlessly blends with the vibrant red fruit. Persistent tannins frame a round, full structure and soft, fresh finish.” This wine retails for $54.

The Stags’ Leap Winery Petite Sirah has a blend of 77 percent Petite Sirah estate-grown, 12 percent Syrah, 6 percent Grenache, 2 percent Carignane, 2 percent Mourvedre and 1

percent Viognier. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 to 14 months. Paubert says “this elegant Petite Sirah is scanted with the varietal’s signature trio of black fruit, floral and spicy characteristics. Fresh juicy flavors of blackberry and blueberry are complemented by generous spice notes of clove and pepper with a subtle hint of rose petal. Refined and supple tannins balance the wine’s powerful palate, keeping this Petite Sirah particularly graceful.” It retails for $39.

MadTree Brewing Company

PsycHOPathy IPA The craft beer scene is alive and well with canned beer: the recent format of choice for both local and national breweries.

Ohio’s roots in the recent sensation date back to just over a year-and-a-half when trailblazing new kids on the block MadTree Brewing Company became the first microbrewery in the Buckeye State to can its beer. The result was a handful of irresistible creations that made quite the rumble across Cincinnati.

While the presence of MadTree brewers Brady Duncan, Jeff Hunt and Kenny McNutt in the industry has yet to even nudge Year Two, their love child has already made its mark on the craft beer scene of Ohio, and beyond, in just a short time. Opening its doors in February 2013, the brewery quickly became the talk of the town. By April, the trio joined forces with a distributor.

The brewery currently distributes three beers year-round: Happy Amber, a dryhopped amber ale; Gnarly Brown, a brown ale with hints of brown sugar, vanilla and coffee; and PsycHOPathy, its gloriously hop-forward India Pale Ale. For a perfect example of what MadTree is made of, look no further than PsycHOPathy. The surprisingly aggressive hop aroma leads to a more subtle and palatable citrus-filled body and finish. Ohio brewers beware: MadTree has made its mark on the scene thanks to this Centennial- and Chinook-hopped beauty of a beer.

While MadTree products are only available in Cincinnati and surrounding cities, the brewery hopes to break into Northeast Ohio sometime in the coming year. With a significant expansion in the works, MadTree Brewing will make its way to local shelves before you know it. Until then, an occasional trek down south may be in order for area craft beer lovers looking for the next big thing. / Writer Aaron Fowler is a bit of a craft beer geek. MUSIC Kent Stage Constructed in 1927 as

a silent movie and vaudevillian theater, the Kent Stage is the sole surviving downtown theater in the county. In 2002, the Western Reserve Folk Association took over management of the venue. Along with the concert venue, The Kent Stage is also the home of All Folked Up, a full service bar equipped to satisfy your desire for an adult beverage or two. Yes, you can take your drink into the theater. The Kent Stage is the host of approximately 150 concerts a year, featuring shows like Arlo Guthrie, Kenny Loggins, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Rufus Wainwright, The Bacon Brothers, and the Kent Folk Festival, the Kent Blues Fest, Kent Reggae Fest, The ‘Round Town Music Festival, film festivals and numerous plays.

Public Art

Sculpture Three Veterans This bronze sculpture is located at the corner of Erie Street and Route 59 and was designed by local artist George Danhires. “The intention of (the monument) is to show veterans that we appreciate their service,” Danhires says. “This sculpture indicates a value this community has.” He designed the monument to represent all types of American veterans through three figures. The sculpture features female, African-American and disabled veterans to “indicate that everyone who served is being appreciated,” Danhires says.

Bike Racks The City of Kent invited designers, artists and the public to participate in a competition to design and create bicycle racks to be installed throughout downtown.

Designs by David Sommers & Associates, Mark Wentz, Tom Hubbard and Dominick Falcione were chosen and installed throughout the downtown district. The project is a streetscape component of the Downtown Redevelopment Project, which is working to make the downtown area more bike and pedestrian friendly.

Murals Love This colorful, large-scale mural resides on the side of Scribbles Café on North Water Street and was designed by Edwin George, a Cherokee painter and storyteller. George is a Kent resident, spending much of his time teaching and painting. His work is dense with cultural and historical value. This mural was sponsored by Standing Rock Cultural Arts, directed by Crystal Bims and painted by community volunteers in 2005.

Lake City Train Henry Van ‘t hooft, a 17-year-old Boy Scout from Troop 177 in Stow, worked with Main Street Kent to complete this Eagle Scout project in 2013. This beautiful mural now adorns the alley between Skullz Salon and Woodsy’s music shop -- better known as Burbick Way -- on South Water Street, and features a 10-foot-by-25-foot iconic image of a passenger train arriving at the Erie Depot (now the Pufferbelly Ltd.) some 50 years ago.
