Visiting Belém Tower

Vacationing with Jim akronlife magazine and Jim Tressel traveled with me all the way to Brazil in November!

I took a few days off from teaching at Akron Digital Academy to visit my son Nick and family in Salvador, Brazil. We ferried over to Itaparica Island and spent the day exploring and collecting sea glass, my new passion.

Daughter-in-law Jennifer snapped this photo of Ayala and Lennox resting with grandma Nonnie after a day of sun and surf. Wasn’t my Columbus family surprised to see Coach Tressel’s photo on the cover of akronlife!

Don and I went on a trans-Atlantic cruise.

We visited Lisbon, Portugal and saw this tower that was used to defend Lisbon against invaders in the 16th Century. We enjoyed reading about the Akron area as we crossed the Atlantic arriving in Miami.

My husband, Aron, and I traveled to Chicago in November to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. Along with eating pizza, shopping, touring Goose Island Brewery, visiting with friends and family, seeing several shows, taking an architecture boat tour and walking up and down the Magnificent Mile (about a million times!), we did some serious sightseeing.

Although we’d both been up in the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) before, this was our first time going out on “the Ledge.” At 1,353 feet in the air, the Ledge’s glass boxes extend out 4.3 feet from the Willis Tower Skydeck. What a great new way to see the Windy City!

Maple Sugaring at Home / Another lesson learned the hard way /

Every time I slather maple syrup on my pancakes, I can’t help but think what went into making it. I know from firsthand experience.

The main feature of the kitchen in our old farmhouse in Mogadore was an enormous fireplace which was at least four times the size of one you can find in most modern homes. The fireplace was originally built just before the Civil War. It was an outside fireplace, built to cook for the many farmhands that worked the property then. Over the years, the outdoor fireplace became an indoor one when the owners added a room to make that part of the house into their kitchen.

The house was built in 1812 with just four rooms: two upstairs as bedrooms and two downstairs as the living/dining room and kitchen.

Every time there was an abundant harvest, the proprietors added another room so when we moved in, there were 13 rooms but an abundant harvest eluded us and prevented us from adding on.

On the property were several very large maple trees. Every February I toyed with the idea of tapping them and making maple syrup but I didn’t get around to it until February had come and gone. A visit to a feed store in Edinburg in Portage County turned my maple-syrupmaking dream into reality when I spotted a box of spiles, which are tree-tapping spouts.

After I bought them, I had to try to figure out how to use them.

The Internet would have come in handy but this was the mid-‘80s, so I had to research it the old fashioned way: I went to the library. It turned out to be fairly simple: Drill a hole in the maple tree, drive the spile into the hole, hang a clean bucket from the spout and wait for the tree to slowly trickle tree sap. Our maple trees were large enough that I could hang a couple of buckets per tree so I bought a 30-gallon trash barrel in which to store the sap.

The fireplace had kettle cranes or hangers built in to dangle pots and kettles over the fire for cooking, as was common in the mid-19th century. The idea is to boil the tree sap down until there’s nothing left but the sugary syrup. I don’t remember what the ratio is, but after collecting 30 gallons of sap, I was confident that I would have enough to get at least a gallon of syrup.

At the time, I was the publisher of a magazine for which I traveled a great deal. I decided to start the sap-reduction process on a Friday because I had to be at the airport fairly early on Monday morning, and I thought three days was plenty of time to make the syrup. I sat in the rocking chair in front of the fireplace, filled the kettle with sap and built the fire hot enough to boil it. Most of the time it takes to make maple syrup is just waiting: waiting for the sap to collect, waiting for the sap to boil, adding more sap and waiting some more. This was a continuous process throughout the day, the evening and into the night.

Sometime early Sunday morning I realized that the boiling-down process was going slower than I had planned. And sometime late Sunday afternoon I realized too that I wouldn’t be able to boil down the entire 30 gallons of sap. That was also about the same time that my wife, Nancy, noticed that all of the wallpaper in the kitchen was curling off the wall.

Well, I couldn’t stop the process. I had come too far to quit.

Sometime around 4 a.m. Monday morning, I decided that I had to shut things down. I let what sap I had boil down, poured the remaining syrup in a jar and headed upstairs to pack and head to the airport. Before I left I barely had time to taste my new syrup; the maple flavor was definitely there but also present was a strong, smoky taste.

The next weekend we made pancakes to use what amounted to about a half pint of smoky syrup. When the kids tasted it, they went to the fridge for the Mrs. Butterworth’s. I was the only one to eat the pancakes with the syrup because I had spent too much time making it to turn my nose up at it. The remainder of the syrup sat in the refrigerator for maybe six months before I finally gave up and threw it out. By then, it had gotten kind of moldy as had the remaining sap in the barrel.

I had always thought that real maple syrup was much too expensive compared to Mrs. Butterworth’s and others of that ilk in the grocery store. I now see why it costs so much; it’s the wallpaper that has to be figured into the cost. Don’t see any other way around it. Or maybe the next time I try making my own maple syrup, I’ll do like everyone else and boil it down outside. But the instructions I read didn’t mention anything about that.

/ Single parenthood: It’s a family affair. /

It’s 8 p.m., and I’m still in my work clothes, sorting laundry. I redirect to the kitchen to load the dishwasher. My daughter intercepts and takes over the task. I smile gratefully at her and head outside to fetch the mail — and am delighted to step out onto a freshly shoveled walkway. “Thank you, son, wherever you are.” He is nowhere in sight. I crash into bed at 11:30 p.m., drift asleep, but awaken a couple of hours later with a pang, which shoots from my head to my stomach as I discover my son still isn’t home. I pick up my cell phone and see his text message: “I’m in Kent.

Won’t be back till late. Love you!” OK, so he’s 20, and he consistently attempts to assure me — but still, I worry.

As a single parent, I don’t live the picture-perfect American Dream, but who does? My married friends ask how I do it alone.

Raising kids to become responsible adults is tough enough with two parents in the house — how do I manage as a solo act? My response: I don’t. I’m not solo at all.

They know how to plunge a clogged toilet, tighten a hinge on a loose cabinet door, wash their own bed sheets and kill an army of ants invading the kitchen.

True, as a working single parent, my life may be more hectic than those of most two-parent households. By necessity, single parents cram more into each day. I whisk through the door to work each morning as polished and as caffeinated as possible, ready to dive in, make a splash and do what it takes to keep a roof over my children’s heads. I breeze out the same door nine hours later, slip into my car and hit the accelerator pad to dash to a program at my child’s school or to stop at Discount Drug Mart to pick up the hand soap I keep forgetting to buy.

Call it sympathy or sink-or-swim survival. Either way, kids have a way of picking up the slack in a single-parent home. They know when to step in, to check in and to tap into their hidden MacGyver. Sure, my home isn’t always — or often — the peaceful haven I desire. My children and I battle over issues rising from limited time, space and money. Whose college application or course schedule was due yesterday? Who needs first dibs on the bathroom tomorrow morning?

Who wants to come with me to check out an apartment? [We need to downsize again, and no one wants to hear it, but guaranteed, they’ll be on board moving day.]

I try to get home early enough to put dinner on the table at a decent hour. Scrambled eggs, anyone? No answer. Is anyone even home to eat dinner or to notice the fresh new Softsoap replacing the watereddown bottle on the bathroom counter? My daughter emerges from her bedroom to tell me she already fixed herself a grilled cheese sandwich. The crumpled Chipotle bag in the trash assures me my son is fed. I can check off dinner tonight. I move on, blindly signing forms my daughter brought from school and mispronouncing Spanish words I deliver sloppily to her during home practice quizzes disrupted by e-mail. >> So life is harried and imperfect. But solo? No way. In truth, in single-parent households, our children learn to fill in the gaps. They have jobs to fund their peppermint mochas, Lil Wayne concert tickets

>> When Jessy tried cheerleading for the first time as a highschool freshman; she had no idea it would change the rest of her life.

>> During her time cheering on the high-school sidelines, Jessy realized she was really interested in dance. After practices, she would go home, look up choreography on YouTube and teach herself dances.

Today, Jessy’s a sophomore at The University of Akron and a professional dancer with the Canton Charge. After participating in a summer intensive dance course in North Hollywood, Jessy tried out to be a Cleveland Cavaliers Girl. Although she made it to the final round, she wasn’t chosen, but dance coach Toni Wall encouraged her to try out for the Charge Girls.

Owned by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Canton Charge is an NBA Development League that plays its games in the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Last year was the Charge’s inaugural season but this is the first season the Charge will have its own dance team.

What was it like to join the dance team?

Jessy: It was a dream come true to be chosen as one of the original eight members of the Canton Charge Girls dance team. I used to dream about becoming a professional dancer when I was younger. I still can’t believe it’s real!

What traditions or rituals do you do before a performance to bring you good luck and to avoid jitters?

Jessy: Before a performance I start getting hyped up. I get goose bumps all over, I start getting anxious and I can’t stand still. To avoid being nervous, I close my eyes and imagine myself nailing the choreography.

In addition to dancing on the court during a basketball game, what are the other responsibilities for the Charge Girls?

Jessy: We’re there to make sure the fans have the best experience possible.

We add excitement and keep the fans’ energy up. We also actively volunteer within the community. Our goal is to make a positive difference in Canton.

How do you stay energized and positive during very long practices?

Jessy: I’m happy to be at practice doing what I love, and I enjoy working hard to prove that I earned it. If I ever feel myself getting down, I imagine I’m at a game and the fans are keeping my energy levels high.

Do you ever catch yourself daydreaming and thinking up new choreography?

Jessy: Yes! I either catch myself dancing or thinking of new choreography for my favorite song of the week. When I want to clear my mind and relieve stress, I just run choreography through my mind. Dance is how I keep myself sane.

In my spare time, you’ll find me…

Jessy: Cuddled up, watching TV with my puppy, Louie. Louie’s three years old, but I still call him a puppy because he’s so fluffy and cute. Our guilty pleasure is watching “The Walking Dead” and “How I Met Your Mother” — although Louie isn’t a big fan of the zombies in “The Walking Dead” so I cover his eyes!

Who’s your biggest fan?

Jessy: Definitely my mommy. She’s always believed in me and supported me. Not to mention, she stayed up all night to make my audition outfit; thanks Mom! All my life she’s told me I can be whatever I want to be as long as I put in the work.

What would surprise people about you?

Jessy: I have an Anti-nuclear Antibodies factor of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s not something I ever let get in the way. I treat my body right with proper nutrition, exercise and vitamins. Sometimes when my knees bother me, I’ll take it easy. Otherwise, I act as if it doesn’t even exist.

What do you do to maintain a tiptop dancer’s body? And, on those off days when you feel like cheating, what’s your biggest food indulgence?

Jessy: I exercise six days a week and incorporate stretching and practicing yoga. I make sure I cover all the food groups, especially vegetables. I only eat foods that are natural and organic. However, I am a huge chocoholic!

Dark chocolate is my weakness.

What advice would you give to young women who aspire to dance for professional sports teams?

Faith, Music and Community / Gospel Meets Symphony celebrates two decades. /

Each year on a typically chilly evening in downtown Akron, I observe concertgoers, clapping, swaying and even shouting when warmed by the spirit of the music resounding through E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. The audience is moved by the instruments of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and the voices of the Akron Symphony Gospel Choir during the annual Gospel Meets Symphony concert, undoubtedly the orchestra’s most popular event.

This year, Feb. 23 is the concert’s 20th anniversary celebration, and concertgoers will experience an event that celebrates community, respects both gospel and classical music, and reaches out to people of diverse backgrounds. The event’s chairwoman is Brenda L. Justice and honorary chairwoman is Ann Lane Gates.

Morgan were also instrumental in planning the concert. More than 125 singers from 37 Akron churches participated, and a group of church choir directors, led by Cleo Myricks, led rehearsals for the newly formed Akron Symphony Gospel Choir.

Gospel Meets Symphony arose from an effort in the early 1990s to make symphonic music accessible to all and to increase the participation and patronage of minorities in the Akron Symphony. The Minority Outreach Committee of the Greater Akron Musical Association (GAMA) sponsored several projects aimed at reaching this goal.

“It’s a priority for me to be part of Gospel Meets Symphony each year,” says 20-year veteran singer Sylvia Thompson. “The music and the fellowship mean a great deal to me.”

One of these was the commission of three pieces composed by African-Americans to be premiered by the Akron Symphony and recorded on a CD produced by Telarc International. The organization decided to host a concert of gospel music backed by a full symphony orchestra, and the proceeds would help finance the CD’s production and support the group’s overall cause. At that time, the late Alan Balter was the maestro of the Akron Symphony. He had conducted similar concerts with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and enthusiastically supported the idea.

People of all faiths and backgrounds compose the choir, now led by Chorus Master Jennifer Mekel Jones. Choir members begin rehearsals in December and dedicate nearly every Saturday afternoon to the effort.

The first Gospel Meets Symphony concert was held at the Akron Civic Theatre on Jan. 29, 1994. Tickets sold out three days before the event, leaving more than 200 interested parties unable to attend. Based on audience demand, Gospel Meets Symphony became an annual event.

“Akron’s Gospel Meets Symphony is unique and has been praised for its longevity and creativity,” Justice says. “It takes a team to make this unique event happen with a wonderful group of people.”

Since the sudden passing of Alan Balter in 1998, Gospel Meets Symphony has been led by guest conductors, including the renowned Eric Benjamin, Charles Floyd, Dr. Raymond Wise, Julius P. Williams and Roland Carter.

Today, Akron Symphony’s Music Director Christopher Wilkins holds the baton.

Fellow choir member Christine Flakes couldn’t agree more. “It’s been a platform that has allowed different cultures to connect and render music to the masses,” she says. “What an awesome 20-year experience!”

In addition to the orchestra, the choir is joined by a rhythm section that includes an organist, keyboardist, bassist and drummer — all members of the local gospel community.

“The Gospel Meets Symphony rhythm section has a wonderful spiritual connection with one another,” Justice says. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group.”

Each concert features special treats, which have included performances by local group Divine Hope, excerpts from the musical, “Paul,” written by Akron’s Charles Myricks, a hymn arranged and conducted by Durrell LeGrair and Balter’s legendary jazz clarinet solo.

For several years, I attended the concert with my grandmother, then in her late 90s. After

one performance, while wheeling her to the car, I remember her saying, “I had such good church tonight, it will last me for days.”

>> Jessica Cole considers herself a Renaissance woman. This 26-year-old board-certified music therapist heads the music therapy program at the Blick Clinic Inc., providing services for over 75 people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. “I love witnessing the healing power of music in my clients,” she says. “It’s the best job ever!” She also plays guitar, piano and viola and specializes in ethnic and world percussion. When her workday is over, she teaches a music and drumming course for youth at risk in the Akron After School program. No stranger to the stage, she’s also a professional opera singer and recently joined the Akron Symphony Chorus. Cole has served as an editor for Ohio Life News (a small community newspaper from Cleveland geared toward minority and religious populations) and is active in the marketing of local political campaigns.

Carla Overly >> Carla Overly’s daughter Brooke nominated her for this contest because, she says, “my mom is the strongest and most successful woman I know!” Overly, who is in her 50s, is a single mom who raised Brooke and her 17-year-old sister Bri while enjoying a thriving career as the chief financial officer of Mont Granite in Solon. Overly calls her girls her “Number One priority” and, to shield her daughters from unnecessary drama, she avoids rushing into romantic relationships. “I think it just happens,” she says.

“You have to be friends first.” Overly’s home in Mogadore is often frequented by her daughters’ friends who turn to her for advice.

“I tell it like it is, and they keep coming back for more,” she says.

Always the first to lend a hand in tough times, Overly supports fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland, the Arthritis Foundation’s Red and White on Thursday Night and at events that help the National MS Society, American Cancer Society, United Way and tsunami and hurricane relief efforts.

With his striking blue eyes and broad shoulders, he is the picture of health. This 33-year-old optometrist has worked with Volunteers for Optometric Services to Humanity to provide eye exams to people in El Salvador. And while the right woman will steal his heart, she can’t have his kidneys because he’s only got one left. During the summer of 2008, he donated a kidney to his father, Phil Kaster, in a successful procedure performed at the Cleveland Clinic. The experience made him realize that “when it comes to my family, I’ll do anything.” A big sports fan, Kaster plays on a golf league and pickup basketball. He also enjoys music and plays guitar, piano and drums. He’s a member of the Portage Lakes Community Council and the Portage Lakes’ annual

Evan Gildenblatt >> Evan Gildenblatt may only be 21 but this Kent State University senior is unabashedly old-school and has a tie and bowtie collection to prove it. “Ties conjure up a sense of another time,” he says, adding that he always likes to look his best. “First impressions are important.” That’s a top priority for Gildenblatt, who is studying Applied Conflict Management and aspires to be a diplomat. “I’ll go wherever I’m needed,” he says. “Whether it’s dangerous, impoverished or offthe-beaten-path.” As director of Kent’s undergraduate student government, he helped bring President Obama to campus during last year’s campaign. “It was a huge collaborative effort,” he says. “Meeting the president was the most extraordinary experience of my life. He’s a remarkable guy.” When it comes to dating, Gildenblatt is looking for a woman who finds politics fascinating as well. “She’s willing to stand up for what she wants but she doesn’t need to be as much of a political wonk as me,” he says, flashing a charming grin.

Lisa Fulton >> Lisa Fulton is the type of woman who immediately puts you at ease when you meet her. She has a warm smile and eyes that sparkle, as if she knows a secret … and she’s not telling. Fulton is a hair stylist at Rian A Hair Studio in Akron and was nominated for Single in the City by one of her clients — a testament to how wellrespected she is. This 31-year-old is looking for a man who is honest, adventuresome and funny, “or thinks I’m funny,” she adds.

Fulton does yoga and has participated in several half-marathons, 5Ks and other runs.

In addition to working with teens in the St. Hilary Parish youth group, she’s traveled on two missions to the Peruvian Amazon with her dentist dad, Dr. Bob Fulton, to provide dental care to the locals. “My life changed

Expanding Their Horizons / Local group provides musical opportunities to adults. /

Most people begin playing instruments as young children, their parents toting them to and from music lessons and school performances, hoping that one day their child might become a famous concert pianist or symphony composer.

New Horizons International Music Association is a non-profit, 501c(3) organization that provides music education programs to adults, including those with no musical experience at all or those who haven’t picked up their instrument in a long time.

The group allows adults the opportunity to learn music in a group setting similar to

those offered in primary schools, simulating a childhood musical experience. There are currently over 200 New Horizons programs internationally.

Jim Adkins, a music instructor and band conductor for the local chapter — New Horizons Band of Summit and Stark Counties, says

the group dynamic is a large factor in New Horizons’ success.

“Each member is contributing to the success of the ensemble and feels satisfaction in our advancement through performance,” he says.

“Advertising this opportunity for adults in the local newspaper attracted a small group of excited folks who became, in a very short time, the nucleus of a concert band.”

The local chapter of New Horizons began in 2003 with just a few members taking classes in two host locations and eventually grew to 40 members in the first year. In the second year, a third host location increased membership to more than 60 Akron-area adults.

Today, the Akron chapter has more than 140 members who range in age from their late-40s to their 80s.

Members pay a $21 monthly fee, which covers the cost of instruction and supplies. Jim Stahl, the local chapter sponsor and owner of the Central Instrument Company in Cuyahoga Falls, helped to spread the word across America.

“Chapters have duplicated across the country as adults searching for rewarding activities have followed a simple model presented by Roy Ernst [New Horizons founder and a professor at the Eastman School of Music],” Adkins says. “Find a teacher, a place to meet, purchase an instruction book and a good instrument, meet once or twice a week and begin making music and follow the lead of other successful chapters. It’s the ‘Build a field, and they will come’ philosophy.”

During the winter, the band rehearses at Bolich Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls and at Cuyahoga Falls High School in the summer.

Adkins says playing musical instruments is mentally stimulating, especially for adults.

“Tons of studies have been conducted over the years supporting the connectivity of the mental processes involved in the performance of music as calisthenics for the brain,” he says.

New Horizons provides eight to 10 performance opportunities for its members each year at venues like Blossom Music Center, Newport Levee in Cincinnati and BaldwinWallace College. Although the local group’s largest ensembles are its concert band and orchestra, it also has a jazz band.

The group is currently piloting an experimental program with Kent State University’s Music Education Department for selected students in preparation for student teaching.

Akron’s quite a hike from the rising hills of Hollywood but Irv Korman knows you don’t have to go to Tinseltown to rub elbows with your favorite celebrities. In fact, he’s written a whole book to prove it. was George Burns’ real last name; his first name was Nathan. That’s why his wife, Gracie Allen, always called him, ‘Natty.’”

In his book, “I was Jerry Lewis’ Bodyguard for 10 Minutes! … and other celebrity encounters,” Irv Korman leads readers on an exciting stroll down memory lane through his interactions with various celebrities. As a theater critic, this Akron native had the opportunity to meet dozens of stars when they came to Northeast Ohio to perform, including Mickey Rooney, Brady Bunch dad Robert Reed and George “Spanky” McFarland of The Little Rascals, just to name a few.

Korman is currently writing a sequel to this book, which will include 30 other celebrity encounters, with the working title, “I Was Jackie Mason’s Chauffeur for 5 Minutes and More Celebrity Encounters.”

“As the celebrities I had met began passing away, I would tell people about how I met them and the particular situation concerning the meetings,” he says.

Each chapter details one of Korman’s celebrity interviews and includes photos and autographs he collected along the way. With articulate attention to detail, Korman’s stories transport you back in time and make you feel like you’re also mingling with Hollywood’s legends.

Korman, who got his start in the entertainment industry by lip-synching to Jerry Lewis’ “Never Smile At a Crocodile” at his gradeschool summer camp talent contest, hopes that everyone who reads his book will take away a memorable experience from his stories.

While some people collect baseball cards or coins, Korman “collects” celebrity interview stories. In his filing cabinet at home, Korman has files on every star he’s met, including a short bio, publicity photo and notes on the star’s performance and what happened during their interview.

“In the case of entertainers, I have notes on how long each set was, the number of songs

they did, the make-up of the band that backed them, and most have an audio recording of an interview with them,” he says.

Although Korman has spent time with dozens of celebrities over the years, he didn’t start writing theater reviews until 1978, and by that time, several of his favorite actors had died.

“I liked Errol Flynn’s movies and would’ve liked to ask questions about his life before Hollywood and about other stars he acted with,” he says.

Korman says he would have also enjoyed talking to celebrities about their Akron connections.

“I would’ve liked to interview Clark Gable and ask about his time in Akron before he left to pursue an acting career,” he says. “ …

When Korman isn’t writing, he’s performing in local theater productions or appearing at events as one of his alter egos: Mildew the Mundane, Marlowe the Magic Clown or Santa Claus. He was also an Akron Public School speech pathologist from 1967 to 1997 and a senior lecturer at The University of Akron’s School of Communication for 13 years.

Today, Korman lives in Fairlawn with Francine, his wife of 42 years, who was behind the lens for most of his celebrity photos.

Oil and gas attorneys provide information, counseling and representation for landowners.

Consider More Than One Offer If your property is anywhere near the promising Utica and Marcellus shale beds, and you’ve already been approached by several oil and gas companies as well as real estate brokers, it becomes pretty obvious that you’ll be able to negotiate with more than one company. If a company has approached you, listen to their offer and then approach other companies to see what they have to say. Don’t commit to anyone before knowing what you can get.

Do Your Research You should know something about both the position of the person who has contacted you and the company he represents.

You may be contacted by an employee of the company, a contractor hired by the company to bargain for mineral rights, or a speculator seeking to buy the rights from you and then flip them to another party for a profit. Do as much research into the interested company as you can. Talking to your neighbors and attending some of the many meetings organized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources can be helpful in educating yourself.

Mineral rights refers to the ownership of minerals, such as oil and natural gas, that are beneath the ground surface. A recent study out of Duke University, which analyzed private water wells in Pennsylvania, found methane concentrations to be 17 times higher on average in areas with active shale drilling and extraction than in non-active areas.

WATER USAGE Hydrofracturing requires the use of 4 to 7 million gallons of water for each “frack,” and a single well could be fracked multiple times. If an average family of four in Ohio uses about 300 gallons of water per day, the water used in ONE “frack” would supply 52 four-person households with water for an entire year.

The withdrawal of such large amounts of water from local resources can significantly impact Ohio’s water resources and infringe upon constitutionally protected property rights in ground water for an untold number of landowners.

Raymond Vineyards / Reserve Selection Chardonnay & Reserve Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Raymond Vineyards was founded in 1971 by Roy Raymond and his two sons, and they had their first harvest in 1974. The family has a long history in Napa Valley dating back five generations to the 1930s.

When Roy arrived in the Napa Valley, he was hired as a cellar “rat” at age 18 at Beringer Winery the year after prohibition. Beringer was one of those select few Napa wineries that were able to stay open during prohibition by making sacramental and medicinal wine; and the year after prohibition, they were hiring additional employees in anticipation of an increase in production.

While at Beringer, Roy met and married Martha Jane Beringer. After Beringer sold in the early 1970s, the Raymonds were able to purchase 90 acres just south of the town of St. Helena which surrounds the current winery. Currently, Raymond owns over 300 acres in the Napa Valley. They also source fruit from a variety of other vineyards in the valley, ranging from Carneros in the south to Calistoga in the north.

Raymond sold the winery to the well-regarded Boisset family from France in 2009. Jean-Charles Boisset, the president, owns several prominent wineries in the Napa/ Sonoma region, including California’s oldest winery, Buena Vista, and the Pinot powerhouse, De Loach Vineyards (both in Sonoma County). Jean-Charles is also married to Gina Gallo, whose family has one of California’s most recognized winery names. Soon after purchasing Raymond, Jean-Charles started converting the 90-acre estate property to organic and biodynamic farming practices. They have started replanting a number of acres on site, and just this past November, Wine Enthusiast named Raymond Vineyards its 2012 American Winery of the Year. The magazine cited the phenomenal wines being produced under the direction of winemaker Stephanie Putnam and her team, as well as the dynamic and engaging new experiences at the winery, designed to educate, entertain and enlighten. >>The grapes for the Napa Valley Chardonnay come from Raymond’s estate vineyards in Jameson Canyon and select Lucia’s Steakhouse Fresh seafood, signature garlic butter-topped steaks, Italian favorites and Lucia classics, like homemade crab cakes or cubanella and long, hot peppers. On the palate, concentrated flavors of tobacco and dark chocolate intermingle seamlessly before culminating in a smooth, lengthy finish. Because of the well-integrated tannins, this hearty Cabernet Sauvignon displays great structure and would pair perfectly with a grilled rib-eye steak and baked potato.

One sip at a time - Local entrepreneur celebrates wine and respects the tea. >>

Akron tea and wine enthusiast Brandon Ford has created Vintage TeaWorks, a line of loose leaf teas inspired by the flavors of wine varietals.

Ford grew up in West Akron, is a member of Buchtel High School’s class of 1996 and graduated from Case Western Reserve University and the University of Akron School of Law. In addition to establishing Vintage TeaWorks in January 2012 and launching the company last summer, he is an attorney, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.

“I still practice law,” he says. “It allows me the freedom to continue to invest in the business without the pressure of paying myself.”

When it comes to wine and tea, Ford is not only a fan, he’s an expert. He holds an Advanced Certificate in Wine and Spirits from the London-based Wine and Spirits Education Trust, is a Certified Spanish Wine Educator, and holds Level 1 and Level 2 certificates from The Specialty Tea Institute.

Vintage TeaWorks products are blended according to Ford’s exact formulation and then sent to Ohio for distribution. He specifically designed his teas to be loose leaf, rather than bagged.

“Tea leaves like to have room to unfurl while brewing. A bag can sometimes hamper this process,” he says. “I think loose leaf is more flexible too. Tea can be used in food and cocktail recipes (among other things.) Loose leaf gives consumers more options for how they use their tea.” >> Vintage TeaWorks offers six non-alcoholic blends, and each one contains all-natural fruits and spices: White Tea Riesling, Green Tea Sauvignon, Oolong Chardonnay, Rooibos Noir, Black Tea Merlot and Pu-erh Cabernet.

Thanks to the line’s gorgeous packaging, the teas have a modern, sophisticated feel. You can peek at the blends through the clear base of the kaleidoscope-style canister.

Sometimes flavored teas can be overwhelming but each Vintage TeaWorks blend has a unique flavor profile and fragrance that’s subtle, a feature that both wine and tea aficionados will appreciate.

Ford hopes to get Vintage TeaWorks on more store shelves this year.

With the thawing of winter our attention eagerly turns to the buds of spring. Each year we venture out to find what is new and look for ideas that will help us capture that magic. So often we find more of the same.

After speaking with the Brothers Grimm we found a breath of fresh air.

T

he Brothers Grimm Landscape and Design Co. was founded by Jacob Grimm in 1997. What started out as a fledgling company has blossomed into one of Akron’s top design build landscape firms. “I got my start mowing for a lady that attended our church,” says Grimm when asked how all this came about. “My dad used to drive me to her house on Saturdays and while he read the paper I mowed the grass.” This continued all through school and by the time Jacob graduated from the University of Akron he realized that because of his deep love of the outdoors, landscape design was the only career path that made sense.

Since that time a lot has changed for the Brothers Grimm. The company has gone from one ambitious guy to a firm of professionals that rank in the top 20 percent of the nation. Through years of dedication and hard work the Brothers Grimm has steadily risen in the industry gaining recognition year after year. Many of their projects have been highlighted on the Hudson Garden Tour as well as being recognized multiple times through industry associations and suppliers. They have even had top ranking internationally for water features and have had projects featured in international architectural publications.

As a full service landscape firm there seems to be no project that the the Brothers Grimm can’t handle. Staying true to his roots Grimm still has grounds maintenance crews servicing the greater Akron area, but in recent years the company has found success in residential construction as well. What the space is designed for is as important as the people using it, whether it’s a small courtyard to define an entrance or an elaborate outdoor space for grand entertaining, the Brothers Grimm will seek out the right combination of function and design to fit, not only the architecture of the home, but also the needs of the client. “We work hard to listen to our clients and deliver designs that fit the way they live.” They believe that a landscape should fit into its environment and sometimes that may mean making things smaller. “Just because we can build something doesn’t mean that we should.”

Projects by the Brothers Grimm can be seen in backyards all across the greater Akron area.

While outdoor living has become a mainstream idea there is something special, an experience, that you feel when you visit one of their client’s homes. And while many companies offer a similar range of services, the Brothers Grimm always strive to branch out into new areas to further their quest to serve their clients.

What is their latest pursuit? Swimming pools.

After talking to Jacob it became clear that a client with a rewarding project was a major motivating force. This is what led the company to develop their own pool specialty. “So many times we would see projects that we were called in to clean up the mess,” says Grimm. “I knew we could do better and offer more.” And that is just what he did. The idea is that the pool is part of the project, not a pool project.

And it is not just in the work that the company takes pride. Houses That Work for Life!

“Hello construction, it’s medical calling…I have a question!”

reating houses that work for life and modifying homes to allow people to stay in them indefinitely, is just what designer, writer, teacher, and CAPS/ Universal Design expert Lisa Sandlin’s passion is all about. She began her mission to teach us how to create better designed homes over twenty years ago and in 2009 she authored the book, Houses That Work for Life!

Lisa discovered, through personal experiences, that the typical home does not meet our changing needs as we journey through life. Being a baby-boomer herself, she started looking at the numbers and how this massive population’s needs have changed many industries. As of January 1, 2011, baby-boomers began turning 65 at a rate of approximately 10,900 per day. This group of 76 million sparked a home building industry boom in the sixties and will once again change our housing needs as they retire and wish to stay in their homes. This trend is currently known as Certified Aging-in-Place or (CAPS) and Universal Design (UD). The HBA calls UD “good design from the start.” Sandlin claims.

Susan Ralich, involved with business development for the Home Builders Association serving Portage and Summit, works for Carmine Torio. Carmine encourages his staff to look for opportunities that will serve members and the community. Susan certainly does. She initiated a collaborative between HBA members and the physical and occupational therapists at Summa Akron City and Summa Barberton Hospitals. They have been developing an internal project initiated by Ann Wargo, PT., MsMHA, CAPS; System Director Rehab Services, Summa Health System, and Heidi Teruya-Wirth, PT, CAPS, Regional Director, Inpatient Therapy Services, SW Region Summa Health System.

We are all learning together with a unified goal to serve people with current needs and needs in the future. Some know what their needs are and others have no idea what life will bring their way. Trying to address the unknown for all ages is what UD is all about. CAPS focuses on those that wish to live out their lives in their own homes; their needs are similar but every situation is unique. Homeowners should strive to work with people trained to provide innovative solutions to their problems that will meet all their needs. Our graduates have better answers than those who have not taken the classes and are networking with a diverse team of professionals. Sandlin claims, “Most houses just don’t work, they are not designed to easily adapt to our changing needs. We are teaching our students to think differently and truly understand the functionality of a home.”

“The collaboration is exciting for the students and for the end user that they are helping”, said Ralich. “The HBA brings everyone together in an educational setting so they can understand each other’s area of expertise and ultimately the needs of the consumer,” stated

and remodelers are recognizing the demands of the baby-boomer market and need to work with OTs and PTs to fully understand the requirements of their aging in place and special needs clients. Put the three of them together and you’ve got the team that can get the job done!”

One of the HBA’s goals is to educate Home Builders and Remodelers to create homes with a UD strategy and renovate existing homes to be Certified Aging in Place. It was no mistake that Lisa’s path would cross with Susan’s at the Home Builder’s Association located in Akron. In December, he HBA’s Professional Remodelers Council hosted an afterhours networking event at Wolff Brothers Supply in Akron during the three day CAPS course which resulted in an extremely successful effort to tie the class in with an educational/networking opportunity. The students were introduced to an array of show room products including UD faucets that turn on/ off with a wave of your hand. These faucets were universally designed for innovation as well as for consumers that might find it painful or impossible to grip faucet handles. “Let’s face it,” said Torio, “when people hear aging in place, it doesn’t sound like something they want to put into their home. Yet when they see a faucet that is beautiful, innovative and functional, it’s just what the doctor ordered.”

“It’s the perfect niche! We have some of the best builders, architects, designers, and remodelers in the industry. Once people are released from the hospital, they don’t want to be readmitted.” stated Torio.

“The hospitals don’t want readmissions that can be proactively prevented either,” stated Wargo. When Ralich discovered that Wargo and Teruya-Wirth were in the midst of formulating a business plan and program for OTs and PTs to eventually go into homes to make certain that discharged patients were following their treatment plans and looking for hazards in the home, she thought, what a perfect collaboration and started the ball rolling.

According to Wargo, after a referral to OT and home assessment and recommendations for modifications to patient’s living spaces are completed, patients and their caregivers are given resources for accessing CAPS and UD designated professionals.

There is a huge opportunity for this specialized design strategy and remodeling process in the baby-boomer market. “Not just anyone can do the work properly”, states Rick SirLouis. You need to have the specialized education and credentials to do the job right. These courses offer a great business opportunity for local Builders, Remodelers, Designers, Architects, Home Health Care Providers, Home product suppliers, etc.

CAPS is a three day designated course which entails: CAPS I, II and Business Management. We discuss the opportunities, challenges, design strategies and solutions and how to incorporate them into a business plan.

Universal Design/Build is a two day course that stresses the differences of Universal Design and CAPS. Universal Design/Build is an all-encompassing design strategy for the design of all products and environments to be used by all people, of all sizes and abilities, without specialized design. It is inherent to the design, not applied.

Choosing the right material for your deck.

Adding a deck to your home will allow you to enjoy your yard and can also add value to your house. When it comes to deck construction, selecting your deck material is one of the first things you need to decide.

The major choices you have to choose from is a composite wood or natural wood. Here are several tips to assist you in your deck material selection process.

The first tip is to consider how much repair and maintenance you will be willing and able to do.

Composite wood products take less maintenance than natural wood. With a natural wood deck you will need to stain and seal it every year. Composite wood products consist of wood fiber, plastic and glue. They need to be cleaned from time to time, but do not need to be sealed and stained on a regular basis.

Saving, Giving and Conserving Many of us have started plans to remodel a room only to find that after we put together our wish list, we find our desires may be larger than our pocket book. Well, don’t pack away the plans yet. Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or woking with a professional remodeler, you can still find great prices for some of those luxury pieces you have to have.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, located in Akron, sells donated new and gently used home furnishings and home building supplies. Every item at the ReStore would have ended up in a landfill if the previous owner had not donated it to the retail store.

“The inventory turns over in the store on a daily basis since all items are donated by the public or building contractors,” says Rochelle Fisher, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Summit County.

It’s hard to say what might be at the store on any given shopping day, so customers are encouraged to visit frequently.

Since 2007, the ReStore has sold items such as tractors, couches, windows, doors, paint, sinks, tubs, vinyl and toilets to consumers looking to make home improvements at a lower cost. All items in the ReStore are sold at 50 to 90 percent off retail prices. Although some items are used, they’re in good working order. The proceeds generated from sales at the Habitat ReStore are returned to the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Summit County to build more homes in partnership with families in need.
