We just returned from Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Zip lining through the rainforest was a wonderful excursion. We did horseback riding through the mountainous jungle region. The food was awesome. The people of Costa Rica are very hospitable and love tourists.

Ten years ago, I was a newlywed with a new job, a new apartment and no idea how much my life was going to change.

Since then, I’ve changed more than the weather on a typical day in Northeast Ohio.

When I started at this publication, it was called Akron Life & Leisure. I had been a fan of the magazine ever since its first issue — the one with Stan Hywet on the cover. As a lifelong Akronite, I adored the magazine because its unique voice set it apart from other local publications. From Day One, I became part of the team that helped change Akron Life & Leisure into its new (and current) persona as akronlife magazine.

Although I’m not a fan of change in my personal life, I’ve always been a sucker for the metamorphic process. I love watching movies where a main character experiences some sort of event that changes him or her forever. (Think Selena Kyle’s transformation into Catwoman in “Batman Returns,” or Eric Draven’s violent death and disturbing re-birth in “The Crow.”) I also love makeover shows and often wish Stacy and Clinton, from “What Not To Wear,” would raid my closet at home.

That’s why I joined akronlife at the most opportune time. What could be better than having a say in a magazine’s name, content, look and overall attitude adjustment? I remember looking over our artistic director’s shoulder, watching him make the tiniest changes to that January 2011 cover. These changes, which may seem insignificant to the reader, represent life-or-death decisions in the magazine business, especially for a city magazine like ours, and I loved that I was able to watch akronlife become less “leisure” suit-y and more … lively.

Though the magazine has changed over the years, it’s still adored by its readers.

Even now, when I hear complaints from a reader about a photo or article, it’s usually followed by a comment like, “But other than that, we still really love akronlife.”

I guess that represents how some Akronites feel about the city in general. In spite of its flaws, we still really love this town.

This year, we’ll take you — our dedicated readers — on a look back to 2003, as we celebrate akronlife's 10th anniversary. Don Baker Jr., our editor-in-chief, shares his experiences this month on how he established this publication and the growing pains it’s survived over the years. Then, every month throughout the rest of 2013, we’ll feature an article or photograph from that first year. Some pieces may show places that no longer exist in the Greater Akron area, while others may show parts of the city that we were certain would never last but, somehow, have withstood the test of time.

>> Every year, the residents of Hinckley, Ohio gather to catch a glimpse of the first buzzard of the season.

A buzzard—or simply, a turkey vulture — makes its return to Hinckley every year on March 15. Around 7 a.m., area residents and bird lovers crowd around while the Official Buzzard Spotter strains to spy the first one.

What duties do you have as a buzzard spotter?

Hosko has been interested in buzzards since 1996, when she became the manager of the Brecksville Nature Center, part of the Cleveland Metroparks’ Brecksville Reservation. Hosko’s center was responsible for Hinckley Reservation’s Buzzard Day and Buzzard Sunday, a family-friendly event that includes hikes, tours, educational presentations, live music and other activities. This year, Buzzard Sunday falls on March 17.

Bob Hinkle spent 30 years as the Cleveland Metroparks’ Chief Naturalist and served for 16 years as Official Buzzard Spotter. Do you feel that you’re qualified for this well-respected role?

SH: I became interested in birding when I was a biology student at Baldwin-Wallace College back in the early 1980s. I took an ecology field studies course with Dr. John Miller to Everglades National Park in south Florida and fell in love with birding and that area of the United States.

SH: I love the people that this event attracts. They’re great! Folks come dressed in their buzzard attire year after year. There’s something special about witnessing the first official sighting of the buzzards back to Hinckley Reservation in Cleveland Metroparks. It’s an official sign of spring!

Last year, Bob Hinkle retired as Hinckley’s Official Buzzard Spotter, and Sharon Hosko has taken his place for this year’s event.

How long have you been bird watching?

What makes buzzard spotting so fun for you?

SH: My main task at Buzzard Day is to spot the first turkey vulture that flies overhead and yell, “BUZZARD!”

SH: It was an honor to be asked to take over such a position. I’ve been at Buzzard Day with Bob for the past 15 years or so, and he was a fabulous Official Buzzard Spotter role model. I hope I can carry on the tradition as well as he did.

Is there any special equipment you use while buzzard spotting?

SH: The key piece of equipment is a pair of binoculars. They give you the ability to get a closer look at the birds flying in the distance so you can identify them correctly.

How are you going to prepare yourself for the big day?

SH: Get a good night’s sleep, make sure my binocular lenses are clean and hope for nice weather. Last year there was a strong thunderstorm right at 7 a.m. on March 15. Thank goodness it didn’t scare the buzzards away!

What has been your favorite moment while buzzard spotting?

SH: Helping someone spot their first buzzard. Some folks who come by have no idea what a buzzard is or have never seen one before. Helping them to see that first one is always a thrill.

Do you know any fun birdcalls?

SH: My best bird call imitation would be the barred owl. This call sounds like the bird is saying, “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.” I used to practice the call driving back and forth to work when I first started working at Brecksville Nature Center. Stop by Brecksville Nature Center, and I’d be happy to do the call for you.

What do your family and friends think of your unique career?

SH: I think many of them are envious because I have a job that I love. I’m sure they’ll all be watching and listening to the local TV and radio stations for the first official spotting of the buzzards back to Hinckley Reservation on March 15th.

It was announced in January that Akron’s 2012 crime rates dropped by over 10 percent from the previous year. Local crime

syndicates were quick to respond, calling 2012 a “rebuilding year” and promising an observable productivity increase as early as the first fiscal quarter.

Twelve fire departments in Summit and Portage counties received donations of oxygen masks specially-designed for cats and dogs. Area hamster- and gerbil-rights groups have voiced disappointment over what they call “clear pet prejudice.”

4/7 Holocaust Remembrance Day speaker: Leo Silberman Silberman was 14 when the Germans invaded his hometown of Rymanow, Poland, in 1939. After two years of occupation and forced labor, he survived several slave labor camps, concentration camps and a displaced persons camp. There’s a cobalt blue coffee mug on my desk engraved with the words, “Baker Summit. October 22, 2001”. That’s the exact date that the magazine you hold in your hands was started.

True, the first published date of Akron Life & Leisure magazine, now akronlife magazine, was the Holiday Issue published in November 2002. But during that year a lot of serendipity had to occur before the ink hit the paper.

“Our band cut a record, which I tried to get on the air at WHK. They lost it! That’s when I figured that it might be a lot easier to play records than to record them,” Chizek said.

To prepare for a broadcasting career, Chizek enrolled in Ohio University in 1965 where he worked as disk jockey

and program director for WOUB. After graduation, he went to work at WBBW in Youngstown for $130 per week.

It was here that Chizek learned the fine art of handling callers from mentor Dan Ryan.

Another radio personality who indirectly helped in Chizek’s professional development was WKYC’s Jim Runyan. Chizek tuned in, listened carefully and took notes.

This Oct. 22, 2001 meeting took place in a MetroParks pavilion. We invited Dave Weida, a business coach and friend; Sam Lombardo, founder of WorkLife and friend; Ted Klimczak, of Donovan, Klimczak, an Akron CPA firm; Dennis Kleidon, of Kleidon and Associates, a Fairlawn advertising firm; and, of course, me and my sons, Brendan and Colin Baker.

The purpose of the meeting was to help Baker Publishing, our small publishing company, find a new direction after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. We had published a small quarterly business magazine, Akron Business Magazine, since 1996. The effect of 9/11 on the advertising market across the country was devastating. Folio magazine, a publishing industry trade publication, reported that the advertising market after 9/11 was the worst since World War II. If we wanted to survive, Baker Publishing had to find a new direction.

Dave started the meeting with exercises to spur our creativity. Three hours into the meeting, Dave asked each of us what we thought the next logical step would be for our company. A couple of people said we should abandon all hope of saving our magazine and find something else to do.

ong before WNIR radio became “The Talk of Akron,” it was know as WKNT. Station manager Bill Klaus noted that during the sixties and seventies, the theme was music rather than talk. The change in 1980 to a conversation-only format was made to order for WNIR’s celebrated big talkers, Howie Chizek and Joe Finan.

As anyone who regularly tunes into 100.1 on the FM dial knows, the two men rarely see eye-to-eye on anything. You might say that they mix like oil and water.

Or it could be that they go together like salt and pepper. Whatever the comparison, Finan and Chizek pro vide WNIR with just the right recipe for talk show success.

When the baton passed to Dennis, he wondered why Akron had so many business magazines (three at the time) but no city magazine. He speculated that there were more advertisers for a city publication than there ever were for a business-to-business magazine. For some reason, that remark sent my head spinning.

We had talked about publishing a one-off City Guide to test the support but never really went beyond discussing such a venture. Now I could see clearly how a city magazine would fit Akron to a T. The city had a lot going for it, including the new Canal Park and downtown construction.

The political climate was good, with the business community and the Mayor’s office working together for the greater good. After the meeting I felt so much exuberance I went home and started working on a business plan.

We tossed around a lot of names for the magazine including akronlife, but in the end we settled on the name suggested by Rose Kleidon, Akron Life & Leisure, because it encapsulated all that the new magazine was about: life and leisure in the Greater Akron area. We also came up with a two-word mission statement: Celebrate Akron. The only

things standing in our way were the details, like money and staff. >> For the next several months, we shopped our business plan around to people whom we felt could become investors or lead us to investors. I made one of these calls to Sheila Sternecker, a business consultant for the Greater Akron Chamber. She made some suggestions about the efficacy of our business plan and said she would give some thought to funding part of it.

One July day, I got a call out of the blue from Bill Melver, who had also talked with Sheila, and was looking for a project to get involved with since his recent retirement from General Electric. We met at the old Brendan & Finn’s Bar and Grill over

pproximately 1,000 guests were on hand for the Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron Charity Ball on December 27, 2002 at the Goodyear Hall. This year attendees helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event. The theme for the evening was “100 Nights in White Satin.” Floral decoraBecky and Bill Considine tions, stringed lights hanging from the ceiling like a sky full of stars and a stage set with a winter scene created an inviting atmosphere. Thirtyeight debutantes were presented.

Their selection was based on the volunteer and community involvement of their families.

The money raised from this event supports the services and medical programs of the Children’s Hospital.

and we still hadn’t secured the necessary funding, we had a decision to make: publish a test issue for the holidays or start over for spring publication.

Dennis Kleidon suggested publishing in time to take advantage of the holiday advertising but I said no, we didn’t have the money to speculate. Melver also was firm, insisting we get the magazine on the newsstands for the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. Since we hadn’t come up with enough money to launch, he would fund the first issue.

Serendipity played a part in staffing that first issue. Kleidon offered his 23-year-old son, Kurt, as our first editor. Kurt was wellqualified, having just completed his master’s in English at the University of Minnesota and was looking for work. As for the first art director, I had an ace up my sleeve: my younger sister, Kathy Baker Moorhouse.

Kathy had a bachelor’s from Kent State in graphic design and had been working as a freelance designer and was more than ready to move into designing an entire magazine.

We were also fortunate to have Ray Saviciunas, an award-winning photographer, who had been the designer of our business magazine. By the time we decided to

y 1977 downtown Akron and aesthetics didn’t belong in the same sentence. As the rubber industry was rapidly closing plants and offices, downtown became a ghostly image of its former self. Much of the youth of the time saw, as the Sex Pistols then sang, “No Future.” In this bleak landscape a dumpy little night spot called The Crypt located near the Goodyear plant served as an incubator of Akron’s brief reign as a center of the punk and new wave movement. The Crypt’s owner was weary of night-to86

publish, my son, Brendan, moved on to a paying position at Babcox Publications, an automotive aftermarket publishing company in Fairlawn. Colin, Melver and I became the advertising sales force, scouring every lead we could muster. In the end, we secured enough ads to pay for the first issue. >> I still can’t believe it was just six weeks from our first staff meeting on Sept. 16, 2002 until Akron Life & Leisure rolled off the press in early November. Our original idea was to put out a test issue and see how it was received before making plans for future issues. We heavily promoted that first issue — getting on several local radio and TV stations, making public appearances and selling subscriptions at any venue that would have us.

The public’s response was welcoming and generous. We were invited to many area fundraisers; we spoke to a group of 100 Morley Health Center employees and at a meeting of the five-member Optimist Club.

The City of Akron granted us a development loan, which assured the publishing of subsequent issues of Akron Life & Leisure.

Three of us are still around from the first issue: me, Kathy and Colin. After 10 years, however, the winds of change are upon

Akron quickly became an international center of this new music with local bands storming the international scene. It was then that British label Stiff Records released Akron Compilation in 1978, an album that included a cut by the Rebels, who are still playing today.

Among other acts included on the Akron Compilation were Chi Pig, a band that originally started as the Poor Girls at Firestone High School. The band’s name was taken from an orange restau-

Akron-born Rachel Sweet won space on the Compilation. Some of her later work didn’t sell too well but did garner some good press. Sweet eventually retired from the music business to pursue an education and an acting career.

Tin Huey, a Frank Zappa/Captain Beefheart-influenced group, was signed by a major label with high hopes after the Compilation release, only to fall victim to poor sales, while The Waitresses went on to score some national fame in the 80s with “I Know What Boys Like.”

The album itself appears to be wellknown in collector circles. The copy pictured here was purchased in Rochester, NY in 1992 for eight dollars.

The scratch ‘n’ sniff tire graphic still smells. It currently fetches from $10 to $20 on various internet collector sites.

Even true Akronites may not recognize names like Idiot’s Convention, Jane Aire & the Belvederes, Sniper or Terraplane who made it in the Akron Compilation. Nonetheless, it is fascinating that in the midst of utter despair, Akron let out a howl that was heard around the world.

Colin’s been running the business side of Baker Media Group (the new name for Baker Publishing) for a few years now and will continue in that role as well.

In addition to the people named above, I want to thank the readers and subscribers who’ve been with us since day one and the many advertisers who’ve used our pages to tell their story to those great readers.

Whether you prefer subs, grinders, wraps or hoagies, sandwiches make great fodder for culinary creativity. Consider the Dagwood sandwich.

Introduced in the 1930s and named after the “Blondie” comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead, this ridiculously high tower of hodgepodge was the cure for Bumstead’s latenight hunger pangs. Piled with salami and Swiss, fried egg and fish, pasta and pepperoni and other random refrigerator finds, this quirky concoction has secured its place in sandwich history.

At the chic, little Nosh Eatery in Hudson, a Big Brisket sandwich plays to patrons’ palates. Cured in a secret-recipe brine for 20 days, a tender and delicately sweetand-tangy mound of slow-roasted beef brisket rests between slices of thick sourdough bread and is dressed with authentic aioli and laced with roasted garlic and vinegar-infused horseradish.

“Italian cooking is very simple and basic. It’s about bringing out the flavors of single ingredients,” says sous chef Andrew Sternberg. “It’s all about the balance of flavor and letting the vegetables stand out and shine.”

Not-So-Basic BLT Crave restaurant owner and executive chef Aaron Hervey remembers a time in Toronto, when he feasted on rich, butterpoached lobster that was so divine, it inspired him to create a twist on the classic BLT for his own restaurant.

This sandwich begins with thick Texas toast brushed with clarified butter and crisped on a flattop grill. Inside, sharp white cheddar melts mildly and creates a supple base for sweet, buttery chunks of Australian cold-water lobster, and 30

then the creation is topped with slices of golden tomato, applewood-smoked bacon and crunchy Napa cabbage. The sandwich is drizzled with avocado aioli.

Although the BLT is a mainstay at Crave, Hervey changes the sandwich’s tomato varieties — from fried green to beefsteak — as the restaurant’s seasonal menus change. When it comes to greens on this summer’s BLT, he has his sights focused on arugula or, perhaps, mixed greens.

This avant-garde sandwich befits the restaurant’s Historic District location where urban workers, suburbanites and college students gather in what Hervey calls a “really cool, unpretentious, warm and inviting atmosphere.”

“I just knew I wanted Akron to be for Crave,” Hervey says. “We’re very proud of our Akron roots.”

Give Me Some of Your Tots Inspired by characters in the cult-classic film “Napoleon Dynamite,” The Uncle Rico Sandwich at Mr. Zub’s Deli At The Matinee treats Highland Square’s nightclub-closers to a belly-filling, meatand-potatoes fix.

This densely thick sandwich is a concoction of thin-sliced, medium-rare grilled roast beef topped with tater tots and slathered with chive-and-onion cream cheese, stuffed inside a toasted wheat bagel. It’s late-night grub, indeed, but Mr.

Zub’s owners, Tiffany and Mario Nemr, say The Uncle Rico has fans, both old and young, at lunch and dinnertime too.

The couple’s choice of homemade chiveand-onion cream cheese and wheat bagel was influenced by their travels — to Chicago, New York, Miami and Austin, as well as college towns, like Athens, Ohio — in search of sandwich favorites with tasty fillings. All of the sandwiches on Mr. Zub’s menu are named after movie characters, which makes perusing the

menu fun as well as informative.

One Zub’s patron embellishes her Uncle Rico with egg, bacon and capicola, and at least half of the restaurants’ other customers design their own sandwich mélange.

“People know they can be crazy here,” Tiffany says.

“And we’re not going to look at them funny,” Mario adds.

Students everywhere, put down those highlighters and pick up some flash cards! Some of the most popular study strategies – such as highlighting and even rereading – show little promise for improving student learning, according to a new report authored in part by two Kent State University researchers.

Kent State’s John Dunlosky, professor of psychology, and Katherine Rawson, associate professor of psychology, and a team of distinguished psychological scientists review the scientific evidence for 10 learning techniques commonly used by students. Their findings are published in “Psychological Science in the Public Interest,” a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

“Schools and parents spend a great deal of money on technology and programs to improve Dunlosky student achievement, even though evidence often isn’t available to firmly establish that they work,” Dunlosky says.

“We wanted to take a comprehensive look at promising strategies now, in order to direct teachers, students and parents to the strategies that are effective yet underused.”

Based on the available evidence, the researchers provide recommendations about the applicability and usefulness of each technique.

While the 10 learning techniques vary widely in effectiveness, two strategies – practice testing and distributed practice – made the grade, receiving the highest overall utility rating.

Most students are probably familiar with practice testing, having used flash cards or answered the questions at the end of a textbook chapter. Students who prefer lastminute cram sessions, however, may not be as familiar with the idea of distributed practice.

yourself on material before the big test are highly effective learning strategies. Both techniques have been shown to boost students’ performance across many different kinds of tests, and their effectiveness has been repeatedly demonstrated for students of all ages.

In contrast, five of the techniques received a low utility rating from the researchers.

Notably, these techniques are some of the most common learning strategies used by students, including summarization, highlighting and underlining and rereading.

“I was shocked that some strategies that students use a lot – such as rereading and highlighting – seem to provide minimal benefits to their learning and performance,” Dunlosky says. “By just replacing rereading with delayed retrieval practice, students would benefit.”

So why don’t they? Why aren’t students and teachers using the learning strategies that have been shown to be effective and inexpensive? Dunlosky and colleagues found that the answer may have to do with how future teachers are taught.

“These strategies are largely overlooked in the educational psychology textbooks that beginning teachers read, so they don’t get a good introduction to them or how to use them while teaching,” Dunlosky says.

As a result, teachers are less likely to fully exploit some of these easy-to-use and effective techniques.

To help address this gap, the researchers organized their report in distinct modules, so that teachers can quickly decide whether each technique will potentially benefit his or

her students and researchers can easily set an agenda on what we still need to know about the efficacy of these strategies.

“The learning techniques described in this monograph will not be a panacea for improving achievement for all students, and perhaps obviously, they will benefit only students who are motivated and capable of using them,” Dunlosky and his colleagues noted.

“Nevertheless, when used properly, we suspect that they will produce meaningful gains in performance in the classroom, on achievement tests and on many tasks encountered across the life span.”

The report, “Improving Students’ Learning With Effective Learning Techniques: Promising Directions From Cognitive and Educational Psychology,” was published in the January 2013 issue of “Psychological Science in the Public Interest” and is authored by Dunlosky and Rawson with Elizabeth Marsh of Duke University, Mitchell Nathan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Daniel Willingham of the University of Virginia.

The research included in the report was supported by a Bridging Brain, Mind and Behavior Collaborative Award through the James S. McDonnell Foundation’s 21st Century Science Initiative.

Your Teen Needs to be Reading Author offers tips for getting adolescents to turn the page.

Being able to read well is more important than ever for young adults to achieve economic success. But more than 60 percent of middle- and highschool students score below “proficient” in reading achievement, according to a December 2011 report by the Alliance for Excellent Education.

“Teen literacy is a huge problem in the United States — its 15-year-olds rank 14th among developed nations in reading — behind Poland, Estonia and Iceland,” says Rhiannon Paille, 27, an advocate for teen literacy whose recent fantasy novel, “Flame of Surrender,” targets young adults. (South Korea, Finland and Canada rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd among developed nations in reading.)

“Kids need strong reading skills if they hope to graduate from high school AND they really need to plan for college – 59 percent of U.S. jobs today require some postsecondary education, compared to 28 percent in 1973.”

The best thing parents can do to help boost their 12- to 18-year-olds’ literacy is to get them reading – anything.

• Buy them comic books. Boys persistently lag behind girls in reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, Paille says. If your son isn’t a reader, try getting him hooked on comic books. “Stephen King started off reading comics, ‘Tales from the Crypt.’

Hey, if it was good enough for him …!’’

From comic books, they may move into graphic novels, a popular young adult genre. As long as they’re reading, they’re building comprehension skills and vocabulary, so it needn’t be “War and Peace.”

• Look for book-to-film novels.

Chances are, if it was a great movie, they saw it, and that’s often enough to get a non-reader curious. This is another especially good hook for boys, Paille says.

• Tune into what they’re interested in. What kinds of video games do they play? Some popular games have spawned novels, including Halo, EverQuest, ElfQuest and Gears of War. Even gaming guides, which players read to unlock new clues to advancing in the game, can motivate a teen to crack a book.

• Read the same book your teen is reading. Book clubs are popular because people like talking to others who’ve read the same book. Your teen may not be ready for an evening of petit fours and grape juice while discussing the pacing of “Hunger Games,” but it can make for some interesting conversation on the way to soccer practice.

And you can always nudge them along with comments like, “Oh, you haven’t gotten to that part yet? It’s really good!”

“People tend to think their young adults aren’t reading if they’re not reading novels,” Paille says. “But novels aren’t for everyone, and whether it’s a comic book or a gaming guide, all reading helps build comprehension skills and vocabulary.”

eekend gardening can be one of life’s great pleasures but even the most basic movements — pulling weeds, raking a lawn or just digging a hole — can cause strain on your back in the most painful ways.

For adults, early spring chores often cause lower back pain due to the frequent squatting and kneeling required for planting, weeding, digging and raking. All of these activities require repetitive motion, as well as twisting and turning, and the movement required when lifting bags of mulch, leaves or fertilizer may lead to back pain and, ultimately, a trip to your chiropractor’s office.

When it comes to getting outside and working in the garden this spring, the doctors offer these helpful safety tips: 1.

Avoid squatting and bending as much as possible.

2.

Kneel on a soft cushion instead of bending over while weeding, planting or working close to the ground.

3.

Take a break every 15 to 30 minutes. Slowly stand up.

Take some deep breaths. Walk around the yard to loosen up and do some gentle neck and shoulder rolls.

4.

Use a wheelbarrow to transport leaves, grass clippings or other yard debris instead of carrying heavy bags.

5.

Never simply just bend over! Instead, let your leg muscles do most of the work. Lift objects by squatting down, bring the object that you are lifting close to the body and then push yourself up with your legs.

6.

Rake and dig for only brief periods of time. Take frequent breaks and alternate between left- and right-side raking.

7.

Use your legs to raise a wheelbarrow.

8.

Get assistance when lifting large or heavy objects.

9.

When using a push mower, push with your legs and maintain a good upright posture.

One of the silver linings to the economic upheaval of the past two years is people’s increased interest in re-examining and truly understanding their financial circumstances.

From retirement accounts to estate planning, people are carefully scrutinizing nearly every financial account and document. As a result, many people have adapted their portfolios to more accurately reflect their risk tolerance and their financial needs.

• Set up an Automatic Savings Plan (ASP) - If your employer doesn’t offer this through payroll deduction, you can set one up through your bank or brokerage account. Simply have a certain amount of money withdrawn from your checking or savings account each month and deposited into your investment account. That way, you save it before you ever have a chance to spend it. Try to increase the amount you invest at least once a year.

• Establish a cash flow plan – Business owners know you can’t control what you don’t track. Take the time to forecast your income and expenses for the year, and put it in writing. Then adjust those numbers to reach your goals, such as paying down debt or replacing a car. Track your progress on a regular basis by holding a monthly family finance meeting to review the plan.

• Pay off your credit cards – It’s especially important to take action on debt this year. Cash doesn’t earn much interest sitting in a deposit account (less than 1 percent) and even “low interest” credit cards charge 10 to 12 percent. So if you’re sitting on any extra savings, consider using it to pay down credit card debt. Your cash flow plan should include a schedule to eliminate credit card debt as quickly as possible.

• Shop your insurance – Insurance agents are often paid commission based on premium levels, so they have no incentive for finding existing customers lower premiums. However, there is a huge incentive for a competing agent to find you the lowest premium in order to win your business. Make note of the coverage levels you have for your homeowner’s and auto policies and use them to comparison shop.

Look at ways to save on your health insurance coverage too, such as switching to a high-deductible plan and opening a Health Savings Account.

• Write an estate plan – At a minimum you need to have a valid will, power-of-attorney (POA) for your finances and health-care decisions, and a living will (Advanced Healthcare Directive in some states).

Decide who will be your personal representative in the event you become incapacitated (POA) or at your death (executor). If you have minor children, choose who will raise them in your absence and establish a testamentary trust for their finances.

• Meet with a financial adviser – An adviser is to financial planning as a personal trainer is to an exercise program. Allow yourself to be held accountable by a third party who will push you to help yourself. Good advisers will help you develop a budget, look at your debts, tax situation, retirement and college savings, estate planning and insurance.

Businesses such as HB Chemical, Acme, Giant Eagle, Little Tikes and more than 50 others employ people with disabilities in Summit County. They would testify that, with proper support that is coordinated by Summit DD, their employees are hardworking, dependable and loyal. To these employers, the men and women served by the Summit DD are co-workers, not people with disabilities. Businesses are stronger when a

person’s ability, not their label, define who they are as men and women.

Live Willie rents his home, splitting costs with three other roommates, and receives residential supports from United Disability Services (UDS) to help with meal preparation, personal care and household tasks that allow Willie to live in the community. Willie is a vibrant member of his community and his church. Willie’s services are coordinated and funded by Summit DD but Willie, his providers and his family direct a plan that allow him to live as independently as possible.

More than 550 individuals, like Willie, live in homes across Summit County than can house up to four men or women staffed day and night by paid providers. Men and women who live in these homes are just like their

Joey’s parents are committed to providing typical experiences for him, such as preschool and playing with friends. Children with special needs enter the world of the public school system at age three and to prepare him for this transition, Joey’s parents wanted to expose him to a classroom experience at age two. It took more than one try to make this experience possible, four to be exact. Between the preschools who cancelled meetings and the ones who flat out refused to consider adding Joey to their community, the world of isolation and discrimination became all too real. Just look at Joey, who wouldn’t want to bring his smile into their lives?

Finally, when All About Kids Preschool wanted to include Joey, Summit DD’s Community Partnership for Inclusion (CPI) program offered training and supports to set him and his classmates up for success. Joey and his classmates are thriving and learning

The County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board (Summit DD) believes that everyone has the right to work, live and learn as equal citizens in their communities, including its youngest citizens. Summit DD developed the Community Partnership for Inclusion (CPI) program to support child care centers in Summit County to provide children with developmental disabilities access to quality child care in the communities that they live.

Summit DD’s CPI program began in 2010 as an effort to offer training to childcare professionals on inclusive child care environments.

Inclusive child care means that all children, with and without special needs, are cared for and learn together. Since 2010, Summit DD has trained more than 1,200 child care professionals and has partnered with 16 centers in Summit County where inclusion specialists provide child care, training, equipment and other adaptations which ensure the success of inclusive experiences.

Contracts with local agencies ensure state of the art services and supports are available for individuals and families at critical times in their lives.

More than half of the ADM Board’s financial resources come from a single tax levy approved by Summit County voters with the remainder from state, federal and private sources. No More Fear

Helping children overcome their fear of the dentist

C

an you believe we’re already three months into the new year? Ask children what their New Year’s resolution was, and they might say eating less candy, studying harder or even being nicer to a sibling.

But what about a resolution to overcome their fear of the dentist?

From day one, parents are responsible for ensuring their children practice good dental hygiene.

Parents must introduce proper oral care early in a child’s life — as early as infancy.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, 28 percent of 3- to 5-yearolds in Head Start have untreated cavities, and nearly 340,000 children in Ohio have never even visited a dentist. Early treatment can prevent problems affecting a child’s health, well-being, selfimage and overall achievement. Yet, a fear of the unknown often stifles early treatment and causes stress and fear in parents and children alike. These factors have helped make tooth decay the number one chronic health problem among children in the United States, more than asthma or hay fever.

So what can be done to address these issues? Dr. Jack Gerstenmaier, of Gerstenmaier Pediatric Dentistry in Fairlawn, suggests working together and creating an honest dialogue to solve the problem.

“Encourage your child to talk about any fears he may have about visiting the dentist,” Gerstenmaier says. “Avoid using words like ‘pain’ and ‘hurt’ that may cause added anxiety, but discuss what he can expect from his first visit. Let him know that the dentist and staff will explain everything and understand if he’s scared.”

“Ideally, a child’s first visit to the dentist should be scheduled around his or her first birthday, however we understand that’s not always the case,” Gerstenmaier says. “As dentists, it’s our responsibility to provide a comfortable and pleasant first experience, at whatever age, to build a connection and trust early on. A familiar feeling helps patients of all ages feel at ease during future dental visits.”

Before returning as a partner to the practice founded by his father, Dr. John Gerstenmaier, he spent 4-1/2 years working in the life sciences industry and was heavily involved in numerous research projects. He and others who share his experience understand the importance of dental health from both a national and a personal perspective.

“Kids come in feeling pain, and we don’t want them to have that pain,” Gerstenmaier says. “We want to see healthier kids understanding the importance of healthy teeth. Again, it’s our job to change the misconception of a scary dentist with the squeaky chair, into someone they can trust. That all starts with a positive first visit.”

Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon – Paso Robles and Alexander Valley Layer Cake Chardonnay – Monterey and Santa Barbara Layer Cake Garnacha – Calatayud, Spain Jayson Woodbridge is at it again with his new additions to his wine portfolio from around the world. Woodbridge is now making a Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain and a Cabernet and Chardonnay from California.

Woodbridge was inspired by his grandparents who made and enjoyed wine for 80 years. Every Sunday, his grandmother would bake a layer cake for dessert. Woodbridge would learn from his grandfather that the soils in which the vines lived were just like a layer cake. He would explain that “if properly made, the wine from these vines was like a delicious cake layered with fruit, mocha, chocolate and hints of spice – and rich, always rich.” Woodbridge has learned to look for outstanding soils to make his Layer Cake wines. The goal of his wines is a tribute to history, family, time, soil and, according to Woodbridge, something that can only be handmade!

>> Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles and Alexander Valley is a 100-percent Cabernet. Woodbridge says this Layer Cake Cabernet definitely shows its Paso side, with a prominent nose of concentrated black fruit, smoked meat and dark chocolate. Rich and layered in the mouth, it’s full of blackberries, Bing cherries and silky, elegant structure. Try this Cab with grilled meats like steaks, roast beef, rack of lamb or with aged Gouda cheese. >> Layer Cake Chardonnay has it in the bottle again with this great valued Chardonnay. The fruit for this wine comes from the vineyards around Monterey and Santa Barbara. This virgin Chardonnay (not aged in oak) is a serious wine for the money.

Woodbridge describes it this way: “the layers of Kaffir lime, guava and pineapple pour in at first, and then the light creamy texture of whipped lemon fills in the flavor palette.” The finish is clean, crisp and would be an excellent match for roasted or grilled chicken, tuna or a nice risotto with seafood. >> Layer Cake Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain is a rich and powerful Garnacha, very layered aromatically with fresh red stone fruit, spice and hints of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the wine shows intense dark fruit with a background of chocolate and coffee with a long creamy finish. Pair this wine with Asian spicy noodles, risotto dishes or barbecued pork ribs.

Alchemy Hour is a hop-forward Imperial IPA, clocking in at 9.4 percent, with a balanced blend of Mosaic, Nugget and Cascade hops that gives the beer more of a West Coast taste than the average Great Lakes’ offering of the style.

Lakes, has launched a retail line of its frozen Kustard and authentic Gelato and Spumoni.

All 15 Acme Fresh Market stores — from Cleveland to Canton — will offer Pav’s frozen Kustard in pints and will feature seven to 10 flavors. The Acme in Portage Lakes will carry 14 flavors. Classic flavors, like Chocolate Almond, Pistachio, Nuts Over Coconut and Black Raspberry, will be featured year-round.

West Point Market, in West Akron, will feature Pav’s Gelato as well as its homemade Spumoni.

The creamery imports its Gelato flavors direct from Bologna, Italy.

Micochero says her focus this year is on Pav’s Portage Lakes location and its wholesale and retail accounts. Pav’s supplies its products to local restaurants, such as Gervasi Vineyard, 91 Wood Fired Oven, The Office Bistro, Beau’s Grille and Vaccaro’s. ”We’ve always had interests in opening up another location, and if the right location came along that made sense, we'd consider it. Hopefully that won't happen until 2014,” she says.

Each pint of Kustard, Gelato and Spumoni will be made and handpacked at Pav’s Portage Lakes location.

Pav’s Creamery opened as a Tasty Freeze in the early 1950s. Robert Pavlik later purchased it in 1969 and changed the name to his nickname, Pav’s.

In 1978 Pav’s was purchased by Bill and Claire Micochero, and today, the business is owned and operated by their daughter, Michelle.

So what’s Micochero’s favorite flavor? It’s a tie between Pav’s Butter Pecan Kustard and Nuts Over Coconut.

“I’m also a huge fan of our Nutella gelato,” she adds.

“I've been thinking about expanding our operations for the past two years and couldn't decide whether or not to open up a second location or explore the retail market,” she says. “In the end, we decided that the best way to build our brand would be to first establish ourselves in the retail market.”

The Akron Zoo’s 7th annual Summer Safari was held Aug. 13. The event raised over $125,300 for the animals, education and conservation programs at the Akron Zoo, the most money raised in the seven years of the event.

The night was filled with up-close animal encounters, food from some of the area’s finest restaurants and caterers, a silent auction and raffle. The band, Soul’d Out, performed live for the 375+ guests in attendance. Everyone was also treated to a live animal show by the zoo’s education staff.
