I was so grateful for the article titled "Thanks Giving” [Speak Easy, November 2013.] Just like you, seeing these people with signs on almost every street corner broke my heart every time.

It was so good to gain a better understanding of what the whole cardboard sign 2014 phenomenon is all about.

These people seem to just be everywhere and frankly, I feel it is truly distracting and such Vote an "eyesore" for our beautiful Now! city.

The Best of Times This is a golden age for those of us living at this spot and this time. There has been no better time in history to get sick or injured. Modern medicine has made unimaginable progress in either curing or eradicating major illness from smallpox to polio.

If I had been born 100 years before I was, I would have died at the age of 38 from a ruptured appendix, at 45 from pneumonia or at 65 from prostate cancer. My father would have died at the age of 45 from diabetes. Instead he lived with the disease another 40 years.

My wife would have died at the age of 47 from ovarian cancer. My mother lived to 94 without any major health issues, except some broken bones around the age of 90. Her mother, however, died in childbirth when my mother was only 5 years old. My grandmother bore seven children and died of pneumonia after the last birth in 1924.

Today, not only would my mother have gotten to know her mother well into her dotage, but her other grandchildren and I would have gotten to know the fun-loving woman she had been. My grandfather loved her and called her his “Georgia Peach” because her name was Georgia. I know he would have been a different man had she lived. He reared seven children by himself during the heart of the Great Depression by teaching himself carpentry, geometry and all. He lived to be 87 and never remarried. That’s been the difference in healthcare during a short 100 years.

The same year that my paternal grandparents were married, the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. Fifty years later, my grandparents flew to California and back to Erie, Pa., on a Boeing DC3 and enjoyed the whole experience. Today, of course, that trip is taken for granted, and I’ve taken it and many others over the ensuing years. We have put footprints on the moon by the walking men (as important as the Wright Brothers) who wandered on its surface in the late 1960s. Today, that tiny computer that guided Apollo 11 to land on the moon and return to Earth with astronauts intact would not be enough to power today’s smart phone.

And speaking of smart phones, it was only 1996 that I first got on the Internet. I couldn’t believe that right there on my very slow computer, the red bands of color were piling up on the screen. It was the official website for Beijing University; I was actually in touch with a website halfway around the world from my computer in Akron, Ohio. I was in awe. Of course, that was just the beginning. Today from my iPhone 5S, I can actually talk face-to-face via FaceTime with a person at Beijing University, even if I didn’t have anything to talk about. Technology has made the world smaller. One hundred years ago, if I had wanted to talk with someone from Beijing, it would take me weeks to travel there and weeks to get back. Now we have instant access to almost anywhere in the world.

And one more thing to consider as we live here in the Akron area: water. We’re within walking distance to one of the largest bodies of fresh water on the planet. If we were living almost anywhere else except one of the Great Lakes states, water would be in short supply.

We would need to bring water in as they do in Arizona, for instance, just for our daily needs. We don’t have that worry. Nor do we need to worry about hurricanes, earthquakes, forest fires or most any other natural disasters which plague much of the country. And we are high enough here in Summit County that flooding isn’t a major problem either.

Count your blessings that you were born in this best of all times, here in one of the safest parts of the Earth, with all the resources you need to be happy and healthy. Now the rest is up to you: Being happy is now a choice.

Akron was featured on late-night show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live," after a study ranked Ohio as the most foul-mouthed state. Local

reactions ranged from amused to offended and were all unsuited to print in a family magazine.

Kent State University announced students will soon be able to learn the building and operation of drones. The news was met with unmitigated terror by local townspeople, who announced plans to line their roofs with tinfoil in response.

A Hudson man earned a Guinness World Record and Letterman appearance for juggling ping-pong balls with his mouth.

On the Letterman appearance, the performer commented that the nature of juggling balls with one's mouth lends itself well to late-night humor.

River otters were spotted in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the first confirmed sighting in the years following a 1974 “endangered” classification.

County officials were excited by the news, which would be a boon to local pelt manufacturing industries.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Akron Zoo set a new alltime annual attendance record with 389,508 visitors in 2013.

The new record shatters the previous one of 332,960 set in 2012. The zoo saw record crowds daily through the gates following the opening of their largest expansion in history, the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge, which opened July 20, 2013.

My husband and I are the perfect complement to each other. When we go out to eat, I tend to be Appetizer Girl, and he’s Dessert Guy. It’s not that I’m anti-desserts. It’s just that salty, crunchy, savory foods appeal to me more. (Social psychologists would probably tag me as a talkative perfectionist, and they’d probably be right.)

My husband will usually enjoy some of the appetizer, and I’ll enjoy a forkful or two of the dessert but only if it’s worth it. What?!?

-- some of you are probably asking – Isn’t EVERY dessert worth falling off the wagon? I beg to differ.

If I’m going to have a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream, I don’t want the kind with the small, perfectly square, waxy “chocolateflavored” chips … I want Graeter’s, the kind with black raspberry ice cream and chunks of dark chocolate the size of your fist.

So that’s why when we were choosing the local desserts to feature in this month’s cover

story, we were very particular, and it took an unusually long time to narrow down the list. (Greater Akron has so many great dessert options.)

For this piece, I wanted desserts worth jumping off the calorie-intake diving board, the kind of sweet treats we’d only order from a restaurant or bakery because they’re too ridiculously complicated, or time-consuming, or tempting to make in our own kitchens. I hope you devour the story as well as Micah Beree’s beautiful photographs, and then make the journey to North Hill, Wadsworth, Stow and Munroe Falls to sample these delights yourself.

Muddy Boots & a Borrowed Suit / The story of how ‘we’ became ‘us’ /

There’s this song I love with a line about a borrowed suit. I wore a borrowed suit one time, loaned to me by a just-met Chili’s employee who was easily four sizes larger than I was. It was on my wedding day.

When people ask me and my wife about our backstory, we usually stick to the highlights. We were best friends who found ourselves in love and so naturally climbed into my 1993 Chevy Corsica and hit the road, driving from Kent, Ohio, to Las Vegas, Nev., in the final days of 2000, implausibly surviving a crippling ice storm that had much of the Midwest – from Illinois to Utah – in its sub-zero tendrils. And, no, Elvis didn’t officiate our nuptials.

I’ll occasionally mention the stainless-steel rings we bought for $7 a piece at a Claire’s in some Nevada mall during the hours leading up to our appointment at Vegas’s storied Little Church of the West, the locale of numerous celebrity weddings such as Richard Gere to Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie to Billy Bob Thornton and Elvis Presley to Ann-Margret’s character in “Viva Las Vegas.”

I may recount the Arizona trooper who pulled us over for doing over 100 miles an hour, only to let us off with a big smile and a heartfelt “Congratulations,” or the harrowing throngs of people who celebrated our last night as

single people with us (They may have been on The Strip for New Year’s Eve – that was happening too). But I never really speak of that suit.

It’s such a tiny detail, one lacking the narrative impact so many of our other trip tales possess. (Like when all the ATMs went down, and we were hungry and down to our last $2, one of which my now-wife used to win $7 in a slot machine, money we took straight to McDonald’s for $3 salads in a cup.) But when I hear that line about a borrowed suit, my heart swells with the memory.

So here’s the story: We had our rings. My wife had gotten a hold of a dress but I didn’t own a suit. (I was a freelance editor and writer, so most days I didn’t need pants, let alone formal attire.) I’d packed black, thriftstore slacks and my best turtleneck, but, as our Vegas-resident friend pointed out, the outfit seemed shabby and threadbare when illuminated by the gaudy neon lights of The Strip.

But this friend had a possible solution: One of her coworkers at Chili’s – a well-dressed gent who was also large-hearted enough to help out his fellow

man – was, she guessed, about my size. She made the call and, 20 minutes later, I was standing in a strip-mall parking lot in a hilariously baggy, navy sports coat.

“It’s a little big,” the largehearted (and -torsoed, it turned out) guy said.

“Yes,” I concurred. “It is.”

“But you look good, man,” he said. “You look good. A man should get married in a suit.”

“Well,” I said. “Thank you very much for the loan.”

“No problem,” he said. “And congratulations, you guys! Hey, you keep the suit. It looks good on you.”

I didn’t keep it, returning the oversized jacket and pants through our mutual friend, but I did wear the borrowed suit to my wedding in that building where so many short-lived celebrity marriages got their start.

Just last week, my wife and I celebrated our 13th anniversary with a two-night trip to Nashville. We saw live music, enjoyed a nice hotel and ate in a fancy restaurant for which we were comically underdressed.

The two of us own nicer clothes than we did in our early 20s – I even have a fitted black suit hanging in my closet – but it must be the story of my life to show up to a black-tie affair in jeans, a flannel missing one button and muddy boots.

And that’s okay, because it’s part of the life story we’ve written in the decade-plus following our New Year’s Day wedding in the Nevada desert: the jeans we wore as a uniform to the business we owned and operated for almost 12 years, the flannel with a missing button torn off by one of our three kids, and the boots we’ve muddied walking around the farm we’re attempting to build now.

There’s this other song I love about dirty boots ... / Rodney Wilson is a freelance writer who can still be found slumped over a laptop, writing a young adult novel and listening to Taylor Swift.

This summer, Northeast Ohio will attract worldwide attention when the Gay Games arrive in Akron and Cleveland.

Thomas Nobbe, executive director of the Gay Games 9, has been involved in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) sports for years and has grown up in the region.

That’s why he feels so strongly about bringing the games to Akron in August.

that, so he thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be really cool to have an Olympics-type event for anyone so people could feel safe and feel they could bring their whole self to compete in a safe environment?’

Launched in 1982 in San Francisco, the Gay Games are a sporting and cultural event held every four years in cities around the world, such as Chicago, Vancouver, Sydney and Cologne. All athletes are invited to participate, regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political beliefs, athletic or artistic ability, age, physical challenge or health status.

TN: Currently we have people registered from 24 countries and participants signed up from 45 different states. People think because it’s called the ‘Gay Games,’ it’s only for the LGBT community, which is not at all what the games are about.

Cleveland and Akron will host 35 sports and culture events. Sports will be as varied as softball, track and field, soccer and swimming to rodeo, bowling, volleyball and rowing. Cultural competitions will include choral and band performances.

Nobbe recently talked with akron life magazine about what athletes, volunteers and sports fans can expect.

Why were the Gay Games created?

TN: They were founded by Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete who participated in the 1968 Summer Olympics. He felt it was a great experience for him but something was missing because he couldn’t be out. He was afraid to be out and really bringing his whole self to

The games are about diversity, so anyone is welcome to participate, and we predict there will be many more non-LGBT participants in these games because of the collaboration we’re already seeing in the region alone. We will get people from ages 18 to 80 participating.

Why have you become involved with the games?

TN: I’ve been involved in a lot of different aspects in the community. This is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it’s quite an honor to be involved. I’m passionate about the region and passionate about making our community seen in a way they might not particularly have been through sports.

Why Akron?

TN: They chose this area over Boston and Washington, D.C., for a couple reasons. One big reason was that the cities of Akron and

Cleveland stepped up and said, ‘We support having these games here,’ so that was huge.

There’s a governing body called the Federation of Gay Games, and they solicit bids for the games, narrow those bids down to three locations, visit those locations and vote on which city they think should host. As far as they were concerned, this region pulled out all the stops to show how much they really, really wanted the games.

How many participants are you expecting?

TN: We’re projecting about 10,000 participants, and many of those will bring friends and family so you could add on another 10,000 or 15,000.

And we’re looking at 3,000 to 3,500 volunteers. We have a very strong volunteer program already in place. They can sign up on our website, and we have a volunteer management system where, based on their interest, we can assign them specific sports, days, times and shifts.

How will hosting the games impact Akron economically?

TN: For the region, we’re estimating a $40 million economic impact, and it will be the restaurants, bars and entertainment because people will be doing other things besides competing. We’re working very hard to facilitate that so they do feel the impact, especially for our sponsors.

What do you like best about the Gay Games?

TN: It’s the experience of meeting people from around the globe who are into the same thing. … You go to a swim meet or a basketball tournament, and you see all these people and think, ‘Wow, this is so incredible,’ and they’re as intense as any other athlete. “Oh no,” you said, looking longingly at this month’s cover, “My New Year’s resolution about eating only celery sticks and rice cakes was going so well!”

Forget the diet, folks, we here at akronlife know that February is the perfect month to celebrate desserts, and we’re diving in face-first to sample locally-made sweet treats.

Akron’s known for its sauerkraut balls but when the end of the meal comes around, our local restaurants and bakeries know how to hit the sweet spot. It was

This concoction starts with a tuile cup (a wafer with a fortune-cookie type texture) that is frosted with chocolate on the inside. O’Hara pipes peanut

butter mousse into the cup and then places in the center a cylinder of sour cream chocolate cake filled with Butterfinger ganache.

Now looking like a bulls-eye, he finishes it with a skewer topped with a buckeye.

O’Hara says it was a “no brainer” adding this sculptural

dessert to Circle L’s menu, due to Ohio State’s local Buckeye fanbase and the decadent flavor profile.

“There’s nothing like coming up with something new and original,” he says. “Especially when it’s received as well as this.”

French Macaroons Bittersweet’s, Stow

Bittersweet’s has recently added French macaroons to its repertoire of freshly made desserts. Not to be confused with coconut macaroons (although they’re pretty yummy too), French macaroons are much different in taste and appearance.

“French macaroons, or macarons as some French purists might say, can be debated as either cookie or pastry,” says Executive Chef Todd Horvath.

“A macaroon is made with a meringue with finely ground almonds added into the base.”

Next, two of these pastel-hued cook-

ies are sandwiched together using buttercream, ganache or jam. The result is a light, crispy and chewy dessert that food trend analysts say may become “the next cupcake.”

Horvath tested several recipes, and when he and general manager Gwyneddh Jones offered samples

The cupcake starts with a Valrhona chocolate cake drizzled in chocolate with salted buttercream frosting, topped with colorful mini candy-coated chocolate pieces and a piece of caramel popcorn, and then lightly drizzled with chocolate ganache and caramel.

“I thought it would be a fun, playful cupcake especially for children, but adults love it too,” Stricker says. “The whole concept, name and flavor combination is unique. You won’t find anything else out there like it, or at least we haven’t!”

Giant Donut North Hill Donuts, Akron North Hill Donuts has changed names several times over the years, but since 1974, this Tallmadge Avenue landmark has been family-owned and operated by Linda and Ilias “Louie” Tsakalis.

Years ago, Louie’s friend asked him to make an extra large donut for his grandson’s birthday. After much trial and error, he created a Giant Donut, and when other customers saw the 1-1/2 pound, 16-inch diameter pastry, it became a popular item at the shop.

This handmade raised-ring donut is made fresh on the premises, along with all of the shop’s items. Specially ordered with 24 hours’ notice, the Giant Donuts can be made glazed or iced with chocolate, vanilla, maple, pink or blue icing.

Seasonal colored sprinkles can be added to the iced donuts, as well as “Happy Birthday” or other special occasion sayings.

“We believe we’re the only donut shop in the area that makes them,” Linda says.

“They’re packaged in a large pizza box and can be cut into serving pieces of any size. And, there are those daring people who have been known to eat the whole thing themselves!”

Nestled within the notorious party town of Athens, Ohio, home of Ohio University, sits a healthy row of bars among the small yet extremely busy streets. Standing out from all the rest is the town’s one and only brewpub, Jackie O’s.

Microbrews have been a growing component in the area for quite a few years and have been a staple of Ohio’s craft movement thanks to Athens’ Ohio Brew Week. Jackie O’s brewmaster Brad Clark has won numerous awards and, in 2013, the brewery expanded distribution through Ohio.

Originally known as O’Hooley’s Irish Pub [Editor’s Note: Awwww, good times!], the bar became a brewery in 1996 but changed ownership in 2005 and became known as Jackie O’s Brewery and Pub. Broken into two separate yet adjoining buildings, it contains a smaller brewery-style bar and a larger eatery known as The Public House.

Today, the brewery has three year-round releases including Mystic Mama, an aggressively hopped India Pale Ale; Firefly, their signature amber ale; and Chomo-lungma, a roasty honey nut brown ale that is arguably the trio’s hidden gem.

Dark fruit and raisin-like notes embrace your taste buds as you sip this scrumptious brew, which also presents the palate with shades of chocolate, honey and nuttiness. While brown ales are typically considered the ugly stepsister of the craft beer scene, Jackie O’s contribution is an invigorating addition to the overlooked style.

Jackie O’s Chomo-lungma can be found throughout Northeast Ohio at finer craft beer establishments and retails for $9.99 per sixpack. All Winking Lizard locations have added the beer to its World Tour of Beers bottle list, and it can be savored throughout the year.

Banfi Rosa Regale Brachetto d’ Acqui DOCG When people ask me what wine I’d recommend for a first time wine drinker, I recommend Rosa Regale because everyone loves this semisweet red sparkling wine.

This rare Brachetto was reincarnated when the Mariani family purchased the mid18th century winery in 1979. Legend has it that both Julius Caesar and Marc Antony brought several gourds of the Brachetto wines back from the Piedmont area of Italy and then presented it to Cleopatra. The empress had her lovers drink the wine to unleash their passion.

The tasting notes from Banfi describe this sparkling wine as having “a vibrant cranberry color and floral fragrance with hints of raspberry and strawberry flavors. Isabel Mondavi I’M Rose The I’M Rose wine was made by Michael Mondavi for his wife Isabel so she could enjoy with friends and family. He attended Yale University and earned a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. He went on to work for renowned landscape and architecture firms before starting his own company in 2005 in New York City.

Gidding’s career expanded into entertainment when he opened a second office in Atlanta and joined HGTV’s hit show “Designed to Sell”.

Gidding was on the series from 2006 until it ended in 2011. He is currently seen on HGTV as the designer and host of their landscaping show “Curb Appeal: The Block”.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, located in Akron, sells donated new and gently used home furnishings and home building supplies. Every item at the ReStore would have ended up in a landfill if the previous owner had not donated it to the retail store.

“The inventory turns over in the store on a daily basis since all items are donated by the public or building contractors,” says Rochelle Fisher, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Summit County.

It’s hard to say what might be at the store on any given shopping day, so customers are encouraged to visit frequently.

Since 2007, the ReStore has sold items such as tractors, couches, windows, doors, paint, sinks, tubs, vinyl and toilets to consumers looking to make home improvements at a lower cost. All items in the ReStore are sold at 50 to 90 percent off retail prices. Although some items are used, they’re in good working order. The proceeds generated from sales at the Habitat ReStore are returned to the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Summit County to build more homes in partnership with families in need.

How to reclaim your home after the kids move out

By Abby Cymerman Your son just got his first apartment. What do you do with all the junk he left behind, and how long should you wait before turning his bedroom into a man cave?

Senior adults often ask these questions when they want to reclaim unused rooms in their home, and professional organizers are trained to have the answers. akronlife recently spoke with two Akron area experts: Saundra Wright, from Organized Wright LLC, and Jeffrey D. Gergel, from Organize My Life Now LLC. The first step is to get rid of items left over from family members who no longer live there.

“It’s important for seniors to remember this is THEIR living space now – not their children’s,” Wright says.

Once your kids’ stuff is out of the way, the key is to tackle the clutter without getting frustrated or overwhelmed.

“Most clients make the mistake of trying to

organize their entire home at one time, which cannot be done successfully,” Gergel says.

“Clients will experience higher levels of stress and anxiety and will eventually become too frustrated to complete any tasks.”

Wright reminds clients to take baby steps. “Try one closet at a time or one room at a time,” she says.

The next step is to focus on what you’re going to Save and what you’re going to Throw Away, or Purge.

Years ago, organizers encouraged clients to sort their belongings into four piles: Fix, Save, Throw Away and Donate. Today, these categories have changed.

“For each item you touch, be honest with yourself when you ask the question, ‘When is the last time I used this, and should I keep or purge this item?’” Gergel says. “Most people know within three seconds whether they should keep or purge the item, and if they choose to purge, they spend the next 27 seconds trying to talk themselves out of it.”

“Some clients invent their own categories for piles, such as the Sell pile,” Gergel says. “By the time they contact an organizer, the pile of items reserved for selling causes more clutter than organization. ‘I am going to sell this in the future’ is typically an excuse for that person to hold onto the items.

“I would not recommend a Fix pile because the results are similar to the invented Sell pile. It

Downsizing Dilemmas Tips for moving into your new space When senior adults decide to move to a smaller home, condo or apartment, Jeffrey D. Gergel, of Organize My Life Now LLC, says purging their home of unnecessary items now takes on a new importance.

“It’s best to complete the process prior to the move because it makes the moving process much less stressful on the senior,” he says.

He adds that moving companies often charge their fees based on density and weight, so the more items people can purge ahead of time, the less money they’ll spend on moving costs.

“This gives me a good idea of just how much space they’ll have at their new home,” she says. “Obtain dimensions of rooms and draw room diagrams on a piece of paper.

Measure the furniture you’re planning on placing in each room to see if it will physically fit in the room spaces.

Make sure to note on your drawings where outlets, heating registers and windows are located as well.”

When a room is organized, Wright says that’s the perfect time to label the backs of the photos with names and places.

“Chances are your son won’t know who Great Aunt Mabel is or which side of the family she is from. Additionally, discard any photos which are blurred or are of no real meaning to you,” she says.

The optimum time for purging is the day before trash pickup so the items can go right to the curb. You can also contact your local sanitation department to arrange for a special pickup.

If you know they’re coming, you’ll be more likely to throw things out.

Gergel suggests storing the Save items in labeled, clear plastic containers, and putting the items from the Donate pile in an area close to the car or front door.

“I usually give the client one week to donate the items, or at least schedule a date for donation on their calendar. If the items aren’t gone by the deadline, they’re less likely to ever leave the home,” he says.

Once your extra rooms are organized, you may be surprised at how much free space you actu-

ally have. Gergel has helped clients convert basements into storage rooms for newly organized containers, kids’ toy rooms, arts-and-craft rooms and sewing rooms.

Some of Wright’s clients live in ranch-style homes with one main living room. By turning their children’s bedrooms into small dens or exercise rooms, the clients don’t have to climb stairs to use those areas that were originally in the basement.

To maintain these spaces and keep them useable, Wright suggests purging from time to time.

“For many of us, we enjoy shopping and bringing new items into our homes. It’s ok to bring in but you must also remember to take out,” she says. “Have a box in your closet and try to get in the habit of putting one item in the box for donation every time something new comes in.”

Gergel says revisiting each newly organized space usually takes 5 to 10 percent of the time it took for the room’s initial organization. “This will help maintain the organization forever,” he says.

And, Wright adds, “Just because you now have an empty bedroom closet, don’t run out and buy more clothes.”

If her clients are moving to a different region, she asks questions. Heading to a warmer climate? They probably won’t need shovels, snow blowers and winter clothing. Moving to a retirement community where the landscaping is maintained? Garden tools, hoses or lawnmowers may not be necessary.

Wright recently helped a client get organized for a move, and they discovered boxes and bags of yarn in a closet. The client used to knit but hadn’t done so in years so she donated the yarn to her church for Sunday School classes to use for crafts.

“Don’t move your ‘past’ into your ‘today’ home,” she says.
