Cool jobs run in my family From race car drivers to circus performers, our family seems to gravitate toward jobs that offer a high degree of adventure and not some small amount of risk.

My parents certainly weren’t that way.

They played it safe all their lives and were the happier for it. “We never wanted to be chiefs,” my mother once told me. “We just wanted to be Indians.” For some reason, or maybe as a result of it, they reared two children who always want to be chiefs. I own Baker Media Group, the company that publishes this magazine, and my sister, Kathy, helps run it as creative director.

I married an artist who uses art as a therapy tool in her work as a PCC-S, ATR-BC, ATCS (Supervising Professional Clinical Counselor and Registered Board-Certified Art Therapist).

Where’s the risk in that, you ask? She married me, didn’t she? My sister married a man who is now retired, but has expanded his beekeeping business (Black Dog Honey) and now sells it commercially. The risk is he’s anaphylactic and could go into shock and die from a bee sting. Go figure.

I started my cool job career path when I landed my first plum job as a caddie at Twin Lakes Country Club, north of Kent. I say plum because I was only 13 years old and 117 pounds – dripping wet. I got to carry doubles (two bags at once) only once, but I didn’t want to do it again anytime soon, even for the extra money. At 13, I was happy to bicycle home with $3 in my pocket.

By 15, I was washing dishes at KSU’s Student Union. They were only open for breakfast and lunch during summer quarter, and I got out at 2 p.m. That job wouldn’t be on most people’s “cool job list,” but it was for me. During the scurry of rinsing and flipping the plates, cups and saucers, I would get into “the zone” for the first time. “The zone” is the feeling that athletes and, in this case, dishwashers get that slows all the motion down and allows them to hit baseballs at 95 mph, pick 60-yards spirals out of the air, or rinse and fling dishes into a washing rack in perfect rhythm.

I’ve had that same feeling of “the zone” at 3 a.m. at Nelson Ledges Sports Car Course during one of that track’s 24-hour endurance races, traveling well over 100 mph but feeling like I could literally get out and walk. I became so focused on each corner and getting the power down on the straight that I set my best time of the race at 3 a.m. in the dark.

Of course, driving racing cars for 25 years was pretty cool from the outside, but it wasn’t so glamorous on the inside. There’s an old saying: “How fast do you want to go? How much money do you have?” That certainly applies to racing as it does most any professional sport. Trying to raise the money to go racing is the most difficult part of the sport. Then there are the long hours in the garage and long road trips in the transporter.

I used to think that insurance salespeople had pretty uncool jobs, but I just got off the phone with my insurance agent Megan MacDonald who was headed off to Spain for a summer vacation.

That’s cool.

Our daughter Jessica was a freshman at the University of Akron majoring in dance and music when she struck up a conversation with another dancer. The dancer was in town with Ringling Brothers Circus and told Jessie they were auditioning dancers that very day. Jessie left for Ringling Brothers’ Sarasota headquarters the day before Thanksgiving. Our daughter, who at 10 years old told us she would never leave home, spent the next 20 years in circuses all over Europe, dancing, singing and riding elephants.

Our two sons strapped into race cars at the tender ages of 5 and 6. They both wanted to drive race cars from the day they were born, it seems, and they achieved that goal, racing all over the United States and Canada for many years.

So what makes a job cool? I’m convinced it’s the person in the job. There are cool caddies, dishwashers, insurance agents, and, of course, Editors-In-Chief.

University of Akron music professor and composer Daniel McCarthy has achieved third place nationally in The American Prize in Orchestral Composition competition, 2013—professional division for his work titled "TURN THE PAGE" for orchestra and electric guitar solo.

The FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby announced that an Alumni Association, open to all youngsters and adults who have competed in the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby championships at Akron’s Derby Downs over the past 75 years, has been established.

Daniel McCarthy is a professor and chair of the composition and theory Section at The University of Akron School of Music. He formerly held the Theodore Dreiser Distinguished Creative/Research Award at The Indiana State University School of Music where he was co-director of The ISU Contemporary Music Festival with The Louisville Orchestra.

The first All-American Soap Box Derby race was held in 1934 in Dayton, Ohio. The following year, the race moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain.

the officer for potential ties to Ohio’s black-market foie gras industry.

A handful of Summit County black bear sightings frightened several surprised locals. “Just try to avoid them, I guess,” advises animal control officer Ebony Oso. “Don’t call us — our hands are full with all these deer militias right now.”

to open the doors of the Akron Children’s Museum.

>> Having deep Akron roots, Betsy Hartschuh and her husband, Ryan, have recognized a need for an indoor interactive play space for the children of the Greater Akron area.

As a result, the co-founders of the Akron Children’s Museum want to design exhibits that emphasize learning through play and inspire problem-solving, exploration and discovery.

In their grand plans, children will be able to expand their minds within the museum’s walls with exhibits like a pintsized grocery store where children can learn about making healthy choices as they “shop” with their tiny grocery cart; an interactive water exhibit where kids can experiment with locks, boats and fluid dynamics; and a healthy children’s café where they can make their own smoothies using bicyclepowered blenders.

And Hartschuh wants to collaborate with the community, too. She and her husband plan to design exhibits and programming that highlight the unique historical elements of Akron and reflect the city’s culture. To make this happen, they want to collaborate with leading minds in the community.

As of right now, the museum will most likely be located in the walk-out basement level of downtown Akron’s O’Neil’s building, and Hartschuh hopes to have the museum open in less than three years.

Why do you want to open a children’s museum in Akron?

BH: My husband and I frequently travel with our two daughters. We plan most trips around visits to museums, just as my family did when I was young (plus we always need an outlet for our children’s energy after spending hours in the car!) We quickly realized how much our children enjoyed museum trips, and we were impressed by how much they learned from these experiences.

Akron has many wonderful destinations for families, including our incredible zoo, but it doesn’t have a children’s museum. Everyone on our team has heard parents comment that there aren’t a lot of desirable indoor entertainment places to take kids where they can expend energy and

engage in interactive learning experiences. We know that a family-based interactive museum can help attract and retain young professionals and their families.

Where did you get the idea for the museum?

BH: On our way home from the beach a few summers ago, we visited the Greensboro, N.C. Children’s Museum. We saw young families flocking to downtown Greensboro on a weekend to engage in unique hands-on learning experiences together. As we watched our children “treat patients” in the doctor’s office, create crafts and paintings in the art studio, sample fresh produce from the children’s garden and shop at the pint-sized grocery store, we found ourselves questioning why we had to leave Akron to find these types of experiences for our children.

During our car ride home, we reflected on the demographic similarities of Akron and Greensboro and brainstormed about all the companies, nonprofits and universities in and around Akron that could help support exhibits. We envisioned massive collaboration, where individuals and organizations with missions, products or services that make a difference in children’s lives can work together to create innovative and memorable learning experiences.

Why is it important to provide this type of venue to children and families?

BH: [Author] Diane Ackerman said, “Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning.” If we can create this museum, we’ll foster a sense of curiosity in children that will benefit the Akron community for generations.

We came across an eye-opening study, the Chicago Longitudinal Study, citing societal return on investments up to $16 per $1 invested in early childhood education.

Benefits to the children, families and community came in the forms of increased earnings and tax revenues and averted criminal justice system costs.

We’ve always dreamed of making profound differences in people’s lives, and we think we’ve found a fun, impactful cause that many in our community will continue to support.

Are your children an inspiration for the museum?

BH: Absolutely! We’ve always marveled at the developmental strides our children make after engaging in creative play or being exposed to a new environment.

Our 4-year-old recently asked, “Can I catch light?” Great question, right? My husband, the physicist, could have answered, “Not really, honey, light doesn’t have mass. Unless you effectively create a Bose-Einstein Condensate of photons …” Or, he could have just said, “Yes, you’re doing it now with your eyes.”

Instead, it was much more interesting to help her remember how she has already “caught” and “manipulated” light. She could actually recall a light table exhibit in Chicago, which we visited over a year ago, where she used prisms to turn white light into rainbows. She could apply that impressive, interactive learning experience from a year ago to help answer her curious mind’s inquiries today. We want to create those memorable learning experiences in Akron.

Did you visit a children’s museum while growing up?

BH: My mom, who is an amazing elementary school teacher in Revere Local Schools, planned educational experiences into almost every family trip we took. We visited museums of all sorts all over the country, and I really appreciated being able to connect lessons taught in the classroom with real experiences I encountered in museums or at historical sites. Sometimes the connections were obvious; other times the connections were more subtle. But in almost every instance, the hands-on, real-life experience enhanced my understanding of the concept.

What do you hope children will get out of the museum?

BH: We hope to help children become better problem-solvers, innovators, creators, analysts and citizens. We also hope to help children learn to make healthier choices and lead healthier lives. / Writer Audrey Fletcher is a junior at KSU working on her bachelor’s in magazine journalism.

A Meal out of a Snack

/ When I hear the phrase, “Be Prepared,” I don’t think of Boy Scouts. I think of Elsi. /

For my good friend Elsi, being prepared isn’t just an expression but a way of life. She’s a wealth of knowledge, supplies and good advice for any conceivable situation.

When Elsi takes on a task – any task – she will research every aspect including its origins, evolution, methodologies, pros and cons, availability (within a 50-mile radius) and cost comparisons for all materials. All of this information will be recorded in a sortable and searchable Excel file.

Mind you, one such task was making holiday hair bows for her infant granddaughter. On the other hand, they were the finest and prettiest hair bows you could ever hope to see.

A few years ago, Elsi and I took a weekend trip to Toronto. We made the six-hour drive after work on Friday because we were under the delusion that we were still young enough to go out after 11 at night, enjoy a full evening of festivities and still get up early to see the sights.

I was surprised by the amount of baggage Elsi had for a 48-hour trip, 12 of which would be spent in the car. Then again, I’d been known to pack for a camping trip with the motto, “You never know when you’ll be asked to a prom,” so I didn’t comment.

(OK, that’s not true. I don’t go camping. But I have taken a prom dress on a beach vacation where the dressiest restaurant requires wearing fairly clean cutoffs.)

>> Arriving at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto (thoroughly researched and recommended by Elsi) we went upstairs to get settled before hitting the town. Elsi produced a huge box containing roughly 48 drawers and placed it on the vanity in the bathroom. I was curious but didn’t ask.

A short while later I mentioned that I had a little headache. Elsi said, “I have aspirin. Would you like regular, baby or buffered?

Or would you prefer acetaminophen? Or ibuprofen?”

“You have all those?”

“Yes. Why?” “No reason.”

“Would a sinus mask help? Or maybe a soothing tape of a babbling brook?”

Later, when responding to various parts of our conversation, she offered up ear plugs, duct tape, scented magic markers and AAA batteries. I realized the box in the bathroom was a treasure trove suitable for “Let’s Make a Deal.”

I decided to put her to the test.

“Hmmm, I could use a mint.”

“Altoid, Tic Tac or Junior?” Elsi asked.

“You know, I would put my hair

up if only I had some bobby pins,” I mused.

“I have black, brown and rhinestone-studded,” she offered.

She then goes on to “confess” that she has an Excel file to track her toilet paper purchases.

“My ankle is a little sore.”

I laugh until I cry.

“Bandage, brace or balm?”

Somewhat annoyed, she tells me, “This is serious. There’s a toilet paper conspiracy. The packages may say you’re getting twice the quantity but when you compare square size, weight and length of the roll, you’re not. It’s a scam, and it must be exposed!”

“I’d like to mark the map with the places we’re going tomorrow.”

“Highlighter, sticky notes or rubber stamp?”

“Rubber stamp.”

“Star, X, checkmark or pointing finger? And what color ink?

Black, blue, red, purple, orange or green?”

So, Toilet Paper Manufacturers, be warned. Elsi is on the job, and she will squeeze the Charmin.

While deciding if my next request would be for an embroidery hoop or a buffalo head nickel, an alarm went off (some twit pulled the fire alarm as a joke) and we had to evacuate the hotel. I grabbed my purse and headed for the door. Elsi grabbed a first aid kit and what I suspect was an AED.

A look back at August 2003 {Volume 1, Issue 8}

Looking back at the August 2003 issue during our 10th Anniversary celebration, we remember the most rewarding aspect of publishing a city magazine: Each month, we have the opportunity to tell the stories of the people who have given so much to this community.

These are people whose stories have either not been told or whose contribution over many years is recognized by only a few. There’s a rich history in this community, photographs from the past that rekindle memories and small local companies and their owners and employees to be celebrated. We’re still uncovering these types of stories, and we hope you’ll continue to enjoy them.

A

ugust in Akron is when the best professional golfers bring their top game to the area. The tournament is the main attraction, but the week at Firestone celebrates many people other than the players.

For each NEC Invitational, an Ambassador of Golf is recognized. The awardees are people "who have fostered the ideals of the game on an international level and whose concern for others extends beyond the golf course."

For each ambassador, there is a person that remains behind the scenes and is responsible for making the ambassadors come to life. When it is time to present the award, the face of a local artist, Jack Richard, emerges from his studio with a portrait painting of the year's ambassador. The original portrait goes to the recipient, while a photographic facsimile is created for Firestone Country Club.

Who are some of the past ambassadors? Dinah Shore, Gerald Ford, Gary Player, Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Nancy Lopez and George H. W. Bush are only a selection of the faces which have been painted since the World Series of Golf started in 1981. It sounds rather odd to connect golf pros, presidents and movie stars together but not to Jack Richard or to the Northern Ohio Golf Charities, who makes the selections.

Richard is commissioned each year to paint the portrait of the ambassador. The painting is presented at the Ambassador of Golf Reception at the Firestone Country Club in late summer. Surrounded by easels, palettes, pastels, oil paints, linseed oil and turpentine, Richard, the "face" behind the portraits of each ambassador, creates a lifetime of achievements on canvas.

The process for Richard begins in the late winter or early spring. He hears from the NEC Corporation, and they provide the name of the newly selected ambassador.

Richard takes it from there. As a painter, teacher, restoration expert, historian, artisan, craftsman and owner of the Almond Tea Gallery on the Front Street Mall in Cuyahoga Falls, Richard knows how to get the information he

hey are the unsung heroes that make special events come off like clockwork. From checking credentials to collecting trash, writing a newsletter, supplying refreshments and providing security, an army of volunteers will help the NEC Invitational return to Akron, after its absence last year.

As Vice Chairman of Transportation for the NEC Invitational, Duke coordinates a staff of four division chairmen who—with their assistants—manage an additional combined staff of nearly eighty volunteers.

Topping the list in the “exclusive services” category is VIP Transportation, chaired by Jan Shupe and assisted

by Frank Myers and Bill Reid.

They make sure transportation is provided for the golfers during their stay and while traveling to and from the airports.

Additionally, they assure that players are settled into or aware of directions to their hotels prior to being assigned their own car.

Occasionally, they will also meet players when their private jets arrive. Frank Myers said that in addition to the usual arrangements with Akron Canton Airport, the tournament maintains a desk at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, where tournament vehicles are stored at car rental agencies.

Making sure that the pros aren’t left stranded at airports in the middle of the night or lost in traffic with a practice-round tee-time approaching is a daunting undertaking, especially when the whole world is the audience.

Dealing with the challenge is Tallmadge resident Joyce Duke who calmly describes her responsibilities the way a general discusses battle.

Buick will be the official car of this year’s NEC with models distributed according to a complicated and privately guarded “pecking order.” But veteran volunteer Bill Reid, who, in nineteen years, said he has “seen it all,” points out that players sponsored by another automaker require that company’s brand of vehicle. That is where the necessity to meet special requests, often on a moment’s notice, comes into play. Reid said he has done everything from buying clothing to spending the day at the hospital with a player’s wife.

The Pflueger Corporation Ernest F. Pflueger, a six-year-old orphan, didn’t know what he would find when he traveled with his older brother and sister from Germany to America in 1849. Ernest F. eventually married and moved from Buffalo to Erie before finally settling in Akron. By 1864, he had founded Enterprise Manufacturing Company, which produced, among other things, saddlery and fishing tackle.

Ernest A. Pflueger joined his father’s growing company in 1880 at the age of fourteen. Blessed with sharp business instincts, he later served as secretary/treasurer before becoming president in 1913.

It wasn’t long before fishing gear had nosed out Enterprise’s horse-related goods. For many years, lures remained the largest part of Pflueger’s angling business. “The Kent Floater,” “Monarch Minnow”

and “Globe Bait” were just a few of the artificials they sold. If you happen upon a Pflueger “Flying Hellgrammite” at a garage sale, buy it.

The lure is worth $4,000-$15,000 to collectors!

By the twenties, Enterprise (or The Pflueger Corporation, as it was known to anglers) had become the largest tackle producer in America. During the thirties, the business focus was clearly on the manufacture of reels.

Buckeye, Summit, Akron and Portage are four familiar names given to Pflueger reels of this period.

By the mid-fifties, John S. Pflueger, grandson of the founder, was at the helm of the thriving business that serviced 32,000 dealers across the nation. The two-story Pflueger Building, at North Union and Perkins streets, spanned an entire city block. Six hundred workers produced a wide range of angling paraphernalia there, including thirty-nine models of fishing reels and 15 million fishhooks each year.

John S. was president in 1966 when the Shakespeare Corporation acquired the company through a stock takeover. Not long afterward, production was moved to China and Japan.

On January 5, 1977, a fire roared through the historic old Pflueger manufacturing plant. Dozens of firemen fought the blaze, but couldn’t save the structure that served as the last visible reminder of the storied

family stove and poured the molten plastic into a homemade mold. After much trial and error, he came up with what he called the “Wiggle Worm.”

The first commercial worm offered by Creme was the Scoundrel, a direct descendant of the Wiggle Worm. The Scoundrel proved to be a tough bait that budget-minded anglers were able to fish with several times before having to replace. Later, a softer, more bass-friendly version (the Shimmy series) was introduced. Eventually Creme added soft plastic bugs, a wide assortment of worm styles and grubs to his inventory.

In 1960, Creme moved his company to Tyler, Texas, where bass-fishing frenzy was beginning to sweep the state.

VIB“E” Bill Edworthy was a soft-spoken man who was content to let his fishing rod do most of his talking. Those who fished with him tell of his angling skills and generosity in sharing his vast knowledge of the sport with others.

It comes as no surprise that when Edworthy began manufacturing a bladed lure out of his North Hill home in the late 1980s, area fishermen eagerly bought it. The wobbling bait, which he called a VIB“E,” quickly made believers out of those who fished it.

When the 73-year-old master angler passed away in 1999, Bill Henkel acquired the business from Edworthy’s widow.

“I lived in Portage Lakes when I first met Bill, and was fortunate enough to fish with him many times over the years,” Henkel said. “He was one of the first guys I knew who fished deep water.”

The VIB“E” lure is designed for fishing that requires quick-sinking action and an alluring wobble. Henkel––at the age of 61––spruced up the lure’s packaging and increased the number of sizes and colors. It is sold in more than a dozen states, with plans to expand.

daughter-in-law and granddaughter all join together to produce the fabled fish-fetcher, the Barney Spoon.

On a productive day, they can complete around 250 high-quality lures.

The big boys in the fishing business could crank out many times that number in a fraction of the time, of course. But Phillips and 90-year-old Bernard Strayer—inventor of the Barney Spoon—will not produce for speed. They simply refuse to “cheapen the lure.”

The Barney Spoon is an odd-shaped bait that looks a little like a mangled shoehorn. There’s a reason for that.

Many years ago, young Barney Strayer tied a line to a shoehorn and tossed it into the water. Bass jumped all over it.

As time passed, the original design was modified until the present shape was achieved.

It was Phillips in 1971 who convinced Strayer to sell the lures instead of just

W. B. Haynes: One buck bought a Haynes Pearl Casting Minnow in 1907. The lure was made at Park Street in Akron.

The Alliance Manufacturing Company: This company that made a variety of metal products also made the Wiggly Wriggler lure.

The eighth and latest public art project created by Arts LIFT was unveiled in late June on an exterior wall of Angel Falls Coffee Company in Highland Square.

Guided by tattoo artist and painter Jesse Strother, co-owner of Good Life Tattoos in Highland Square, 14 high school students from the Akron Public Schools collaborated with University of Akron art education students and faculty to design, draw and paint the mural.

Arts LIFT is an award-winning summer arts apprenticeship program offered by the Myers School of Art at The University of Akron. The Highland Square Neighborhood Association and January Paints and Wallpaper were involved as project supporters.

Participants cross the finish line in front of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, providing a high-energy atmosphere and wonderful photo opportunities. Costumed characters accompany children 6 and under as they race to finish the free Kids’ Fun Run, where everyone’s a winner!

Akron community members gathered May 14 at Quaker Station for the 7th annual Go Red For Women luncheon.

The event brought together nearly 500 men and women and raised more than $190,000 for women’s heart disease and stroke research.

Guests were greeted by the sounds of the University of Akron Steel Drum Band, as they visited local exhibitor tables and bid on auction items. During lunch, guests heard inspirational survivor stories, and keynote speaker Dr. Kay Potetz discussed prioritizing and communicating your needs.

Candace Campbell Jackson, Vice President and Chief of Staff at the University of Akron, served as this year’s Chair, and Betsy Kling, WKYC-TV’s chief meteorologist, was the emcee.

Dr. Vivian von Gruenigen delivered this year’s medical message, addressing the risks associated with heart disease and how to lessen these risks by living heart-healthy.

During the special appeal portion of the event, Christi Nelson told the story of how she suffered cardiac arrest while working in the emergency department of Akron Children’s Hospital. She was joined on stage by her daughter Emily, whom she gave birth to 17 months after the incident.

Starting this summer, after a nearly 200-year absence, the Cuyahoga River is expected to run “dam free” again in Cuyahoga Falls when the Sheraton Suites Dam is removed. After the great flood of 1913 extensively damaged the original dam, built in 1825 and 1826 by Cuyahoga Falls’ first mayor, Henry Newberry, the current dam was built on top of the original. The next step in the project is the removal of the LeFever Dam, also built after the 1913 flood, to provide power to the Falls Lumber Company.

With the removal of these dams, Northeast Ohioans will be one step closer to being able to enjoy the Cuyahoga River as James Monroe and others did at the turn of the 19th century. The only thing standing in the way is the Gorge Metropolitan Dam, a 68-foot-tall 429-foot-wide behemoth that’s also known as the FirstEnergy Dam. Environmental and recreational groups want all the dams removed in an attempt to complete the Cuyahoga River restoration. The Ohio EPA estimated removal of the FirstEnergy Dam would cost $5 million to $10 million, and the removal of the contaminated sediments at $60 40

million. The EPA and engineers expect the dam to be removed in 2015.

However, Shannon Carneal, co-owner of River Reach Excavating, doesn’t foresee the FirstEnergy Dam being removed anytime soon.

“There still are studies that need to be done prior to the project even being put up for bidding,” he says. “Then they need to procure funding from the EPA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. With all of that, I just don’t anticipate that project happening for quite some time, maybe in 10 years.”

The high cost of the potential removal project isn’t the only thing opponents cite as a reason to leave the dam as is. Further complicating matters, in the early 1990s after the hydroelectric operation ceased, the dam no longer had any use, and as a result, the hollowed-out portions were filled with concrete.

Why all the fuss?

Environmentalists say dams are just not natural. A river wants to flow as nature intended.

When the river hits a dam, water backs up

against it, pools form and water becomes stagnant and deposits pollutants at the bottom of the river. This pool of stagnant water creates low dissolved oxygen levels and, as a result, algae blooms occur, which ultimately create health problems for the fish and the river.

As sediments back up against the dam, they’re buried at the bottom of the river, alongside whatever was there when the river was originally paused during construction of the dam.

The only way to restore the river to its original state is to remove the dams.

If the deep waters of the Cuyahoga hide a lot of things from eyesight, 28-1/2 feet of sediment below the waterline might as well be considered a cold, murky tomb. Imagine all the objects that have been entombed beneath the sediment or between the boulders of the river.

What in the world could be down there? The possibilities are limitless — from a Native American’s canoe to the keys to my grandmother’s 1997 Toyota Corolla.

“That is the great unknown,” says Carneal.

“We will have an archaeologist on site during the dam removals.”

Even Dick Horn, president of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society, is curious about what could lie beneath the sediment, adding that “anything could be down there, and there are all kinds of rumors about it.”

If you think the graveyard potential of the Cuyahoga is limited to items like arrowheads, logs, muskets or trinkets, you’re wrong. The actual Cuyahoga Falls that the city was named after, are buried deep beneath the water and sediment created by the FirstEnergy Dam pool.

Going with the flow Unless you were born before the FirstEnergy Dam’s construction, you’ve never been able to see the actual Cuyahoga Falls, a fact that humorist Garrison Keillor poked fun at recently. In a 2010 performance at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Keillor remarked that falls resembled a rapids and not a falls.

“Cuyahoga Falls … so called here in Ohio, is proud of the fact that it falls 250 feet whereas Niagara Falls falls 170 feet, so it advertises itself as being bigger than Niagara Falls,” he

said. “And yet, Cuyahoga Falls is not the tourist destination that Niagara Falls is, because Americans prefer a sudden fall to a gradual fall.”

High water levels, rainstorms and unpredictable weather caused delays in the removal of the Sheraton Suites Dam which was scheduled to begin in June.

Keillor, of course, was talking about the 250 feet the Cuyahoga River would naturally drop over the three miles it traverses through Cuyahoga Falls.

As the dams begin to fall, and the water begins to return to its natural levels, there’s no telling what kind of history will be unearthed.

Citizens are expected to flock to the banks of the Cuyahoga hoping to find a piece of history that has been swallowed up by the river.

According to Horn, there’s not even a definite answer on who the river’s artifacts will belong to. “Rumor has it we may get some of things that are found,” he says. “But I don’t know how that will work.”

The Cuyahoga River is about to awaken from a nearly 200-year coma. Thirty-nine U.S. presidents have come and gone, horses gave way to horsepower, we’ve fought two World Wars, Martin Luther King had a dream — and yet the river has remained dormant.

Best Gig Ever For a Musician with the Gift of Gab Bryan Trembley

Account Representative, S.I.T. String Co.

Eighty percent of his salary comes from commissions, but Bryan Trembley, 42, doesn’t see himself as a salesman. He’s just a musician who describes what he does as talking to music store owners about guitars and the weather and chicks – for long enough to get the sale.

S.I.T (which stands for Stay In Tune) guitar strings are made right here in Akron – just a few rooms away from Trembley’s sales desk. A longtime musician in a number of bands with a ‘fallback job’ as a physical therapy assistant, Trembley used to be a S.I.T. customer who liked picking up his orders in person at the company’s South Broadway Street factory.

One day six years ago, when he came in to pick up his strings, company vice president Tim Pfouts told Trembley he was having trouble finding hard workers. At the same time, Trembley’s

therapy team had recently completed a long-term contract.

Pfouts offered him a job. And Trembley – who thought he’d be learning to make strings – jumped on the offer. But Pfouts had a sales position in mind for Trembley.

“Our customers are also musicians.

Bryan can speak their language. He just connects with them right out of the gate,” Pfouts says.

Trembley was already sold on S.I.T.’s strings; they’re handmade from eight or nine different metals including copper and zinc and quality-tested on site. He knew the company’s history. He knew its big-name customers (Joe Walsh was one of the earliest. The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach is among the 300 artists on the company’s roster today.)

“As far as I’m concerned, getting hired at S.I.T saved my life. Encapsulating my whole existence with music is fantastic,” Trembley says.

Research and Development That Tastes Good Karen Gaither and Dan Mauer Food Scientists at Main Street Gourmet

There’s a good chance that those fresh baked cookies, brownies or granola at your favorite restaurant chain or grocer were actually created with a little help from the scientific wizardry of Dan Mauer and Karen Gaither at Main Street Gourmet on Muffin Lane in Cuyahoga Falls.

At any given time, Mauer, 51, and Gaither, 40, who serve as director and project manager of research and development, work on two dozen projects – 80 percent of which involve custom formulations. Their peanut butter bars with chocolate ganache and marble pound cakes are baked on-site in the factory, but most of the products they sell are shipped out in batter form to be baked fresh at the stores that sell them.

The pair has created exclusive recipes for 18 different blueberry muffins alone — tweaking flours, textures, flavor profiles, sweeteners and even mixing methods for different results.

“There’s a lot of trial and error,” Mauer says, adding that he tests new recipes in five pound batches and then scales them up for anywhere from 350- to 700-pound manufacturing runs.

Requests from clients change with every food craze. A few years ago, “functional” muffins with antioxidants or probiotics were in demand. Now, all-natural “clean label” products with ingredients like fresh butter and “nothing you can’t pronounce” are all the rage. Mauer and Gaither are working on perfecting a flourless muffin and trying more products that use ancient grains.

Neither Mauer nor Gaither can pick a favorite product. “They’re like our children,” she jokes.

And as for the fringe benefits of so many test batches: “My husband complains that I bring too much home,” says Gaither.

“My wife complains that I don’t bring home enough,” says Mauer.

Convinced that beauty, as we know it, can be dangerous, Bill Marthaler and Christine Vadala are on a mission to take toxic ingredients out of the makeup and skin care products women use every day.

The pair manufacture and market GlamNatural Cosmetics from their third floor factory/office in Akron’s Global Business Accelerator.

Marthaler, 56, who calls himself a lab rat, is a chemist. He helped to invent a well-known instant hand sanitizer and worked for a Japanese company that sold ingredients to the cosmetics industry. Vadala, 40, had a successful soft drink marketing career before earning a pink Cadillac from a beauty products megabrand.

The pair met through a mutual friend, Rob Droman, a serial-entrepreneur who is not only the money behind their joint venture but also provides the food-safe colors they use in their growing line of allnatural foundations, shadows, blushes, eye shadows and night creams.

Marthaler mixes up his concentrated hydrating products in the same kind of commercial mixers you find in bakeries. He and Vadala pump the product into bottles and fill each order by hand.

All GlamNatural products follow the company’s “BodySafe” standard, which means they’re hypo-allergenic, vegan, gluten free, cruelty free, talc free, formaldehyde free, mineral oil free, petroleum free,

harmful emulsifier free, phthalates free, sodium lauryl sulfate free, synthetic dye free and synthetic fragrance free.

Looking at the product labels, you’ll find only a handful of ingredients, including Shea butter, jojoba wax and grapeseed oil in their purest forms. Marthaler has left the water out of GlamNatural products, which makes them super-concentrated as well as chemical- and preservative-free.

Because GlamNatural products are EU (European Union) Cosmetics Directive compliant, the company has landed a deal to sell its products on QVC in Germany this November. The company also created a private-label hand sanitizer for HSN’s Joy Mangano.

Now, Marthaler and Vadala are launching a GlamNatural anti-aging moisturizer and working with the city of Akron to find a store front/ manufacturing facility. In the meantime, their products are available online at glamnatural.com and vegancuts.com, Vadala says.

Marthaler’s experience taught him that big cosmetics companies always looked for ingredients to make their products look or feel better. “But never in 27 years did I hear any of them say, ‘Make it safer for women,’” he says. He and Vadala are out to change all that. www.akronlife.com

Chief Pilot, Akron-based airship “The Spirit of Goodyear”

Weather permitting, Captain Jerry Hissem spends about 120 days in the air each year.

NASCAR races, big games, the Preakness and the AirVenture Oshkosh are regular stops on his schedule, but few events can top the energy he feels from his seat 1,500 feet above Ohio Stadium while watching 100,000 football fans do the wave. And back home, corn mazes and a “Hi Blimp!” sign painted on a flat roof near Route 91 at Canton Road make his everyday job a lot more fun.

Some days, Hissem says, flying in The Spirit of Goodyear airship feels like floating in a bubble.

“But it’s large and kind of slow to react – so flying it is like steering a big cargo ship up in the sky,” he says.

When he’s not in the air, Hissem maintains the airship and prepares it for future travels. At 30 miles per hour, the blimp can travel about 200 to 250 miles per day. A 15-person ground crew meets the pilots at their destinations.

Born in Cuyahoga Falls, Hissem had dreamed of flying the blimp since he was a boy. He landed his dream job more than 15 years ago and has been the pilot in charge here since 2010. He started out as an aviation mechanic on the blimp flight crew in Florida. When a pilot position opened up back home in Suffield, he transferred here and learned to fly.

Over the years, Hissem figures he’s flown about 3,000 passengers, with David Letterman and Kurt Russell as two of the most famous.

“But every passenger is a celebrity in our eyes,” he says. “We’re not just stick-and-rudder pilots.

We like to show off the blimp. We’re glad to talk about it and glad to fly it for people.”

Potential pilots need a commercial license in small general aviation aircraft (airplanes and helicopters) before coming to Goodyear. Then, Hissem says, the company provides training (six months to a year, which equals 300 to 400 hours) on how to fly a blimp.

Simulation Technician at Austen BioInnovation Institute

Emergencies happen. But Charles Rice, a simulation technician at the Austen BioInnovation Institute (ABIA) in downtown Akron, is part of a team that gives medical professionals and rescue workers a chance to practice their responses before they’re put to the test in real life-and-death situations.

In a job that seems almost surreal – with equal parts health care, information technology and Hollywood – Rice works with a cast of high fidelity mannequins that can do everything from blink and breathe to cough and gag. The pediatric mannequin says things like, “I want my mommy.” A female mannequin named Noelle lets student doctors try their hand at delivering twins.

Working with Simulation Specialist Scott Atkinson and a team of supervising doctors, Rice sets up and tears down emergency simulations at ABIA and nearby hospitals. During the events, he runs computers that can change the mannequins’ vitals and responses while being treated.

One day, he might be using elaborate theatrical makeup to make live actors look injured before hazardous chemical training for first responders. The next, he’s executing a ‘fire in the operating room’ scenario to test surgical teams on the execution of protocols that can increase patient safety and save lives.

Rice, 22, came to ABIA as a receptionist/ intern while studying to be a paralegal. When he discovered the emergency preparedness work going on there, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. Atkinson took him on as an apprentice, and since then, he’s been immersing himself in the job, working long hours and learning everything he can.

Simulation technology requires long hours, a willingness to take on all kinds of unexpected tasks and a good sense of humor, Rice says.

“But I’m the kind of guy who learns by being thrown into the fire,” he says. “So for me, it’s a great job.”

The University of Akron has created a new associate degree program in simulation technology to train more people like Rice who are called on to do everything from scenario building and room set-up to technical, IT and audio/visual support. Classes begin this fall.

The first house I can remember was a 1950s ranch house, newly built with a lawn that consisted of mostly dirt. This was a time when landscape architecture hadn’t gotten to the new suburbs. My father and mother turned this depleted piece of farm land into a beautiful landscape complete with perfectly pruned shade and fruit trees. My grandfather apparently had professional training in pruning trees and helped my parents choose, plant and shape the beautiful maples that shade that lawn today.

There were also flower and vegetable gardens. The yard was adorned with roses, lilacs, hydrangea, a variety of perennials and flower boxes spilling over with annuals. My first gardening experience was being allowed to plant pansies in between my parents’ prize roses.

If you had questions about what to plant or how to handle leaf mold, you either asked an experienced neighbor or checked the dog-eared copy of one of your few gardening books. The one handed down to me was “10,000 Garden Questions Answered by 15 Experts,” edited by E.F. Rockwell, 1944.

Today a gardener has so many resources that you’d think that a perfect landscape or garden was just a mouse-click away. But if you’ve been working the soil for more than a minute you, of course, know that’s not the case.

Your Garden Plan The first and most important part of gardening or landscaping is to have a plan. You can do it yourself or hire a landscape company but either way, you’ll be more satisfied with the end results if you plan ahead. Early fall is a great time to do this. By this time of year, you have a pretty good idea of what plants worked, where you need to add some color or texture and how you make use of different areas of your property. It’s also a great time to stop in your local garden store to find great sales on perennials, bushes, trees, pots and garden sculptures.

Plants Inventory Take a plant inventory by checking out the condition of your plants and bushes that are getting a little droopy. Remove or cut back plants or foliage that have dying or wilted leaves that can damage your soil, and clean

Fall Planting Q&A Can I still plant tulips after the ground has frozen? Build a fire over the frozen ground and thaw it out or else chop through the crust. Tulips cannot be held a full year out of the ground.

Should bulbs be watered after planting? This is usually not necessary. Very little moisture is needed for their early root growth.

When is the best time to prepare the soil for a lawn? It should be prepared at least 2 weeks before seeding. This is one of the reasons for fall sowing. Not enough time is available in spring. It is the desire of every homeowner with some ground to have a good lawn. A lawn enhances and improves the whole aspect of the property. It ties together in a common unit the various scattered landscape features and adds considerably to the keen enjoyment of the home and garden.

When is the best time to trim trees? If the purpose is to check growth, it is better to prune trees when they are actively growing. Ordinarily, however, trees are pruned when they are dormant, in the fall or late winter. This stimulates strong shoot growth. Pruning is a complex subject full of interest and worthy of the thoughtful study of all gardeners.

What is the best fertilizer to use to stimulate the growth of shrubs? In the planting of shrubs, use leafmold and old manure mixed into the soil. For established shrubs, a mulch of the same.

What is the length of time required for a well-made compost heap to rot? Four months to a year, depending on its composition and whether or not ingredients have been added to hasten decay; usually about nine months.

Fresh Mulch Adding a fresh topping of mulch makes a fall landscape look finished and bring out the color in fall flowers and greens. It’ll also help bulbs and other perennials better survive winter and make it harder for those first few weeds to spring up.

Checking and Cleaning the Gutters As fall approaches and cold and rain become more likely, it’s a good time to check and clear your gutters. This is an important part of your routine fall garden maintenance so that you keep the water flowing freely and lengthen their lifespan.

It’s also a good time to drain and dry garden hoses.

Winter Bird Feeding

In the fall, those beautiful trees you sat under during the hot days of summer will begin to lose their leaves. They’ll make a great base for your compost bin, breaking down and turning into wonderful fertilizer for spring.

Don’t forget to clean bird feeders and stock up on bird seed. Keeping an open source of water throughout the winter will draw many birds to your property. You may need to change some of the foods you offer to birds by providing high calorie and high fat foods that are important to help them deal with sudden temperature drops. Feeders should be located out of the wind on the east or southeast side of your house.

Four Kids Coffee A safe haven for those with food allergies >> The menu at Four Kids Coffee is peanut- and tree nut-free. But owners Catherine and Jason Sackett make sure their shop steers clear of the other top eight food allergens as well.

The Sacketts opened Four Kids Coffee in Canton as an extension of their home. Their daughter, Lily Kate, was diagnosed with severe food allergies, and with that in mind, the Sacketts developed an allergen-free policy and menu for their coffee house.

Customers can order wraps, salads and soups, in addition to coffees and pastries.

Homemade black beans and rice is a featured menu item.

Before opening Four Kids, the couple toured the country, taking notes on what they liked and didn’t like about different coffee houses.

After developing their business plan, they began researching products and touring facilities to find products that met their high standards.

Jolly Pumpkin La Roja Just a short time ago, the thought of a beer that has been sitting around for a year would be considered repulsive and would more than likely be used as some juvenile bet, where the brave soul that attempts to drink it would be rewarded with riches.

>> In the craft beer world, however, the idea of aging a beer brings to life unique flavors typically uncharacteristic to that beer. A new level of richness and complexity, or even a newfound tartness, can emerge.

One such brewery that dedicates its time and effort into this ambitious wild ale style is Michigan’s Jolly Pumpkin. Open fermentation, oak barrel aging and bottle conditioning are all traditions of crafting its delicate brews.

Founded by Ron Jeffries in Dexter, Mich., Jolly Pumpkin is represented by a restaurant, brewery and distillery in Traverse City, along with a café and brewery in Ann Arbor. The brewery’s creative processes produce a striking flavor in its beers, usually called a farmhouse ale or American wild ale.

Arguably one of the brewery’s most well-known and beloved beers is La Roja, an unfiltered, unpasteurized amber ale blended from barrels ranging in age from two to 10 months.

The resulting taste brings forth an exceptional array of sourness on the nose filled with berry and caramel notes, as well as a tart yet fruity finish.

La Roja and other Jolly Pumpkin brews can often be found at World Market, with the closest locations in Akron and North Canton. The beer comes in a 750ml bottle and retails for $12.99.

The Orange Trük and Sushi on the Roll: Mobile Sushi Bar akronlife staffers head to Fairlawn to sample street eats

Formidable Fromage tastes the Baked Gulf Shrimp Mac-n-Cheese (The Orange Trük) To me, there’s nothing more comforting than a hot bowl of mac-ncheese, and The Orange Trük provides, even on wheels. The noodles were light and cheesy with the crunch of baked panko breadcrumbs and a bite of fresh Louisiana Gulf shrimp. All in all, it’s the perfect comfort food.

Purple Haze tastes the ½-Pound Chicken Piquante Burger (The Orange Trük) Skeptical about eating lunch from a food truck, I ordered the Chicken Piquante Burger with coleslaw, pickles and a sweet “Trük” sauce on it.

The sandwich was delicious, and I ate every bite, but there was a bit too much sauce, which made the bottom bun soggy and my hands quite sticky.

Just Joe tastes the Big Trüking Plain Jane Burger (The Orange Trük) Nothing’s better on a hot day than a good burger so my order was a no-brainer. The Big Trüking Plain Jane Burger is piled high with salad greens, tomatoes, onions and sweet dill pickle chips; there were so many vegetables I almost couldn’t see the burger! The meat was juicy and full of flavor but nothing too extravagant; it is called “plain Jane” after all.

Drama Queen tastes the Southern Pulled Pork Sandwich and Trük Balls (The Orange Trük) My sandwich had a heaping portion of tender pulled pork covered in barbecue sauce. It was topped with a vinaigrette-marinated slaw that perfectly complemented the pork. The “Trük Balls” had a crispy outer layer of breadcrumbs, and when I dug in, a creamy mixture of risotto, cheeses, garlic and roasted red pepper oozed out. They were delicious, and there was enough to share.

eating. When I met the owner, Ken Oppenheimer, he seemed clean and knowledgeable so I tried his “Chipotle”-sized Crabby-Rito, pretty much a huge sushi roll in a tortilla. Verdict? I’d do it again. Very good and filling.

Gluten-Free Mom tastes the Philadelphia Roll and Edamame (Mobile Sushi Bar) This new Mobile Sushi Bar (the first in the Midwest) is a fun way to deliver these handmade morsels. Although my Philadephia Roll, with smoked salmon and avocado, was lacking in the cream-cheese department, it was fresh and filling, and the Edamame were perfectly salted.

Saucy Broad tastes the Crazy Cali Roll (Mobile Sushi Bar) This specialty roll has spicy mayo, wasabi mayo and sushi sauce. I always need extra sauce on the side but the Crazy Cali Roll satisfied my endless yearning for MORE sauce with its yin/yang of mayo and spices.

This roll may be crazy but, in the execution, there is true inner balance.

The Spicy Vegetarian tastes the Tuna-Rito (Mobile Sushi Bar) This item has my two favorite foods: burritos and sushi. It sounds like a strange combination but the Tuna-Rito was great! It came almost like a tortilla wrap with everything rolled together, including the raw tuna.

I would definitely eat this again and would recommend it if you like sushi.

Lil’ Circus Girl tastes the Crab Rangoon Roll (Mobile Sushi Bar) I’ve never had sushi in tempura before, and this was a delightful surprise. The tempura didn’t overwhelm the other ingredients — crab, avocado and cream cheese, and the spicy mayo enhanced the flavor of the dish. I’d definitely order this again, as long as I don’t have to share!

Murrieta’s Well Winery, Livermore, Calif.

The Whip and The Spur

Murrieta’s Well Winery is named after the 1850s bandit Joaquin Murrieta. Legend has it that Joaquin would camp at the artesian well on the winery property on his way back to Mexico. He was known as the Mexican Robin Hood because he was an outlaw who would steal horses during the time of the California Gold Rush.

In 1883, Louis Mel started a 92-acre estate winery, called “Murrieta’s Well” by the locals, with cuttings from Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux in France.

Then in 1930, his friend and neighbor, Ernest Wente, purchased the winery. In 1990 Philip Wente, Ernest’s grandson and winemaker, partnered with winemaker Sergio Traverso to resurrect the winery.
