Memory Lane I just read the March issue, and on the Parting Shot page, there’s an old photo of an Akron civil rights march. Guess who’s the woman pictured in the center, marching for civil rights for African-Americans? It’s Josh’s grandmother, Rose Brudno; we called her “Bubba.” She also traveled to Selma, Ala., to march there as well, and was handcuffed and arrested for peaceful protest.

Seeing the photo made me cry. Bubba was a champion for civil rights and fought for equality; she was amazing. These are the contributions that live on. It was nice to get that “visit” from her.

My Friend Buster Buster is a friend of mine. That wasn’t always true.

Six months ago, I was considering finding a new home for him. He came to us last May in a deal that cleared our old house of our grandson and his friend, but ending up making us the dog’s foster caregivers.

After all, Nancy told me that we were only going to foster him for a while.

Alex, you may remember, is the grandson who left us with Juneau six years ago. For that I am eternally grateful, though I wasn’t at the time.

Juneau is the perfect companion — constant but not intrusive. She likes everyone and their dogs, and everybody loves Juneau.

pounds and she only 25 — was going to take her place beside me. She was first mate, damn it!

In all, there were about five major fights in which I jumped to separate them. Out of that, I had a deep bite wound on my upper left arm from Juneau, three deep claw marks on my lower right arm from Buster, a bite wound through my shirt on my chest, arm and thigh.

I had black and blue marks all over my body. I took photos of the wounds to show the authorities, if necessary. Everyone told me to get rid of him, send him to the pound … everyone, that is, except Nancy.

This time Alex was forced to move out after living at our house in Highland Square for a couple of years, during which time he did a great job of painting all the walls, waterproofing the basement walls, wallpapering some rooms and, in general, getting the place ready for sale. For that too, I am grateful. What I wasn’t grateful for, however, was his leaving us with Buster when he couldn’t find a home for him.

And if you meet Buster, you may see why Alex couldn’t find a home for him.

Alex moved into our house and almost immediately brought home this five-pound, shy but obviously happy, puppy. Buster wagged his tail with great enthusiasm — starting at the shoulder blades and to the tip of his tail. In just two years he has grown to 65 pounds and stands two feet tall. He has the huge head of a pit bull and the brindle body of a boxer. He is a formidable looking animal.

Not too long ago, a neighbor, whom I didn’t know, came to my front door with a frayed broom in her hand and, boy, was she mad. Buster had busted out the front door for the umpteenth time and ran down the street by her house. She, the neighbor, was out sweeping snow from her car when Buster spotted her and started barking and getting closer. He has a deafening bark and the growl of a lion. He would scare the hell out of almost anyone. But that wasn’t what almost got him kicked to the pound.

For the first three months he lived with us, Buster and Juneau got into several fights over toys, territory and me. Juneau has been my constant companion for six years. She has had the place to herself, with the cat, Sarah. Juneau has been so protective of me that she won’t let anyone sit beside me. She somehow manages to squeeze in between me and whoever is trying to take that place. Sometimes it means lying across my lap if she has to. When Buster came on the scene, he took a liking to me too, and that’s where the fights began. For a couple of months beginning in June of last year, Buster and Juneau were in constant battles for supremacy.

Buster is of two breeds that dog people call “bully breeds”: pit bull and boxer. By nature, he tried to force his will on Juneau (and the rest of the family, for that matter), but Juneau would have none of it. She was here first, and no upstart puppy — no matter that he weighed 65

“Don’t give up on Buster,” she pleaded. She had fallen in love with the mutt.

We finally agreed to go to counseling — a dog trainer, that is. Ron Shannon, a short, purposely bald man in his mid-30s, had Buster totally under his command within the first 10 minutes of his training. He also taught us the skills we needed to keep Buster under our command.

Since Ron’s visit, Buster has been knocked down a peg or two. He now realizes that not only must he take orders from Juneau, but Sarah, our 17-year-old cat, also knocks him back from her food dish with a couple of quick jabs to his nose. He is beginning to know how to live in polite company, and we are beginning to know how to live with him.

He is still loud and pushy just like the big puppy he is. I don’t think he realizes that he’s no longer that five-pound ball of wiggly flesh as he tries to sit on our laps. He lays his big head on our shoulder and sighs; he is very content.

I have not only NOT given up on Buster, but I love him and all his doggy ways. Pit bulls, it turns out, make excellent pets, and local dog sanctuaries have a good selection of them. They’re loving, smart, easily trainable and provide far better protection than any gun.

I’m Not A Pet Person There, I said it. “But, Abby,” you’re thinking. “How could you not like pets?

They’re adorable. They’re loyal. They provide countless hours of subject matter for ridiculous YouTube videos.”

Yes, I realize that. It’s just that growing up, I never really had pets.

Sure, I had a goldfish named Fishy that I swear we owned for four or five years (although my childhood memory may be a bit dusty.) And at one point, I decided Fishy needed friends so we went to the pet shop on the upper level of local grocery store and bought him a castle and a family. And then, all of them died. So that’s the extent of my petowning experience.

It’s not that I don’t like pets. I’ve been known to snuggle with a distant cousin-by-marriage’s blue-eyed Canadian Husky named Strawberry, pet a sweet Golden Retriever named Cinca who casually wandered the offices of the Barberton Herald when I worked there in the ‘90s, and let out my in-laws’ two Chocolate Labs when they’re out of town.

But, kind of like the singles we featured in last month’s Single in the City cover story, when it comes to pets, I haven’t found “the one” yet,

and it reminds me of a quote by author Anatole France: “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

Several of my friends volunteer with pet rescues, and I look at the pictures they post on Facebook of pets who need a “forever home” and wonder if any of them could possibly be “the one.” I’m sure my husband and kids would love for us to get a dog, but the thing is, I don’t know if I’m ready to be a pet owner yet. (Honestly, after all these years, I’m still getting used to being a mom.)

Maybe once my kids are older, I’ll consider a pet for our home. But until then, I’ll leave the animal expertise to Caitlyn Callahan and Denise Henry, two of our writers who provided the features in this month’s Pet Issue. Caitlyn’s “Animal Attraction” cover story focuses on pets that go to work with their owners, and Denise’s piece is a love letter to her 24-year-old cat, Sophie.

Birthday Blues

/ Or, how I learned to appreciate earthly pleasures /

I recently finished reading “Johnny Cash: The Life,” Robert Hillburn’s expansive new biography of the iconic singer.

While there were many takeaways from the book, one detail that stuck with me was Cash’s annual, New Year’s ritual of sitting down to write a letter to himself, celebrating the past year’s successes and setting goals for his next 365 days. While a good number of these letters are excerpted in the book, detailing life events staggering in their depth and breadth, there was one particular letter that I reflect on when I remember the book, a self-addressed message that can be paraphrased with three words: “Blah, blah, blah.”

While I usually have a hard time identifying with Cash, a personal hero who dwarfed my entire life’s existence on his least productive day, this dismissive, disenchanted man in black is one with whom I can start to relate. I mean, I don’t sit down to write myself a letter every January 1, but this time of year, when the grass begins to send spindly shoots from the soggy, thawed ground; when songbirds, dressed in vibrant colors, find their way back to my property, I look on it all and say, “Blah, blah, blah.”

You see, it’s my birthday this month. I don’t like birthdays, mainly because all those selfreflective feelings people naturally associate with the beginning of a new year that I can’t seem to muster—these thoughts

and emotions find me when I attempt to celebrate that fateful day when I took my first breath.

During a time of life when most folks demand attention, confection and contributions, my main goal is just to get through the day without feeling special. It confuses the hell out of my kids, which only makes the sour emotions worse.

A quick Google search reveals I’m not alone in my birthdayhate, which I guess is kind of a relief, even if most of the hits are paired with the phrase, “Am I normal?” Scanning through the search results, I see a few different reasons emerging as common themes, most of which I don’t relate to in the least, such as social anxiety over large birthday parties, suspicion about significant upticks in personal attention and a dislike of cake. These are all valid reasons, but I live in relative isolation, with limited social interaction, and I think cake is delicious.

And then there’s that other reason, the one that’s got “me” written all over it: The mournful passing of another year. While I’m not afraid of seeing my age tick forward another year — I’ve long since come to terms with my mortality and even cheer the stray, gray hairs I find in my beard during grooming — I do viscerally feel the loss of one

of my finite number of years on this earth when faced with candles shoved into icing. I have a hard time celebrating my status as a living person when I’ve let another year race by without crossing all of my existential “to-do’s” off my grand, unwritten list: No books published, no “Ring of Fire”-caliber songs written, no joyrides in a flying car taken. (I blame society for that last one.)

I understand that I did do some things this year that you maybe didn’t: I moved to a farm and filled it with chickens, cows and pigs. I built a modest, utilitarian building on our property and a few modest, utilitarian pieces of furniture for inside our house.

I was assigned this solipsistic column and have managed, thus far, to get it turned in on a monthly basis, kind of close to my deadlines. I chopped a bunch of wood. And the other day, I actually finished writing that young adult novel that’s perpetually referenced to in my byline.

But you probably did a ton of things I didn’t do so, you know ... “Blah, blah, blah.”

But in seeking out fellow birthday-haters on the Internet, I came across a quote that, quite unexpectedly, gave me some new perspective on the growing pile of numbers left in my wake as I move through this world. w w w. akronlife.com

The quote is attributed to Pablo Picasso, and while I can’t assure you it’s not one of those “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. -- Albert Einstein” deals, it does seem to reflect the artist’s increased joie de vivre in his later years.

Anyway, the quote goes, “It takes a long time to become young,” and it has the potential to be a game-changer for me and people like me who look back on life as a series of goals unmet. Maybe, as one grows older, he or she becomes less concerned with gaining these out-of-reach achievements and learns to appreciate the emerging blade of grass and the songbirds’ lilting melodies for the earthly pleasures they are rather than the perceived personal shortcomings they represent.

Of course, Picasso had already revolutionized the art world when he was about a decade younger than I am, and I’ll bet his birthday parties were awesome. Blah. / Rodney Wilson is an aging freelance writer who can still be found slumped over his laptop, rewriting a young adult novel and, as always, listening to Taylor Swift.

/ Founder of the Dragon Boat Dream Team / This summer, Portage Lakes will be awash with pink, thanks to this breast cancer survivor.

Eight years ago, Jessica Mader was recovering in Nova Scotia, following her chemo and breast cancer surgery.

One morning, on her front porch, she found a life vest, a paddle, a membership card and a note that said, ‘Be on the dock at 6:00 Wednesday night.’ The mysterious gift intrigued Mader, so that evening she followed the instructions and found women on the dock, hugging each other and bringing in a long, swift, Hong Kong-style dragon boat, “so I joined them,” she says.

“The minute I picked up a paddle and put it in the water, I felt such a relief. I was home,” she says. “And all I could think was, ‘I have to have this in Ohio.’”

Mader recently talked with akronlife about bringing strength and joy to area breast cancer survivors through positive energy — and paddling.

How did you get the team started locally?

JM: [My doctor’s office staff ] and I got invitations out to everyone he’d seen with breast cancer in the Greater Akron area, and I booked two nights [for registration] because it takes 22 people to paddle a dragon boat.

The first night I had 35 people come, and they all signed up, and then I got 37 more. So right away, I had 72 people. And [my doctor] said, ‘When you’re ready for your boat, I want to buy it for you.’ I’m such a lucky person. We now have a beautiful naval dock and a boathouse, and we paddle out on Portage Lakes.

Where did the name for the team originate?

JM: I decided it should be Chemotion of Ohio from the chemo that saved our lives, the motion of the dragon boat going through the water and the emotion we all share. And I went running in and told my doctor, and he didn’t smile.

He said, ‘Look Jessica, not everyone enjoyed their chemotherapy as much as you did.’ And it was true; I just loved it.

So I called my son, and he says, ‘Mother, did you ever think about what the anagram for is for Mader? It’s dream.’ And I said, ‘Oh my God, The Dragon Dream Team — perfect.’

How does the team help you and the paddlers through such a difficult time?

JM: We go from ages 26 to 82, and everything inbetween. It makes you realize there is a quality of life after breast cancer that you

never anticipated. And it is so joyful. You contribute, and yet you receive so much; it’s just a win-win situation.

What this team has done is make you count your blessings, and there’s something really comfortable that you don’t even have to talk about. I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t been touched by someone in some way who has breast cancer, so the support is wonderful.

And we’re open all the time to new members.

We have done a wonderful thing for hundreds of women around here. It’s not a tear jerker, it’s a joy. They come kind of scared and not knowing, and I say to them, ‘I’m going to pretend you’re Cleopatra, and we’re just going to paddle you around, and you can be a queen.’

But they all want to pick up a paddle. They can’t help themselves.

Why bring the dragon boats to Ohio?

JM: I knew about the dragon boats [in Nova Scotia], but not being involved with breast cancer in any way, I saw them go paddling out, and for a moment, it made me a little sad, and then I moved on.

Now when I go there, I know the joy that’s in everybody’s hearts for having found each other and having this. It’s something about the depth of understanding for others that’s so rewarding. It’s just the best.

How can local people see what the Dragon Boat Dream Team does?

JM: We have our gala fundraiser on April 12 where people join us and celebrate. July 12 is our second annual Portage Lakes Dragon Boat Festival, where we have boats racing, tents and displays, and food. It’s a wonderful thing.

Do you and your team members participate in any type of ritual before you paddle?

JM: Before we get in the boat, we have a circle of strength on the beach, and we all hold hands. It’s not taken for granted. We give thanks and count our blessings, and that’s the important thing we do.

You never hear anybody going, ‘Oh, poor me.’

Rust Belt Identity

/ David Giffels’ new book explores Akron through the eyes of a native son. /

“The Hard Way on Purpose” is not only the title of his new book, it’s what author David Giffels says living in Akron is all about.

Rooting for the Cleveland Browns or Cavaliers, enduring long, harsh winters, embracing the shut down, run-down factories, and staying in Northeast Ohio is doing the hard way on purpose.

And Giffels’ book is about embracing the Akron area of the Rust Belt — its history, its present and its future.

A graduate of The University of Akron, Giffels spent several years as a columnist at the Akron Beacon Journal and currently writes books and teaches at The University of Akron in the North East Ohio Master in Fine Arts Creative Writing Program. This book’s concept morphed from what he learned from his children to one about place and identity.

“All those themes of place and belonging and what’s unique about living here, good and bad, were always there, and it just sort of came out that way,” he says. “And that’s my favorite thing about writing: when something seems inevitable that you don’t realize until you start writing it.”

Born and raised in Akron, Giffels always knew he wanted to write, although he didn’t know exactly what that meant until he graduated from college and applied for a job at the Medina County Gazette. For 18 years, he wrote for newspapers and realized writing “is not primarily about being artistic with words, but is about human nature, and the only way to understand human nature is to engage. [I] really am thankful Akron people allowed me to get into their lives for a long time, and I think that’s why this book came so naturally. That’s really what being in Akron and listening to people here is.”

“The Hard Way on Purpose” is a series of serious and humorous essays cataloguing Giffels’ experiences growing up and living in Akron.

“I was born at the very end of the whole Akron identity as the Rubber Capital of the World, and by the time I was even aware of where I was, we were in the Rust Belt,” he says. “There’s a whole, vast population in the Rust Belt of people in my generation who have committed their lives to a place that everybody said you had to leave.” But, he says, it’s the stories of the population that stayed that he wants to tell.

In recent years, however, Akron has been about reinvention, and Giffels says that’s something Akron embodies as much as anyone. “I love that, because it’s not just a reinvention, it’s not just ‘Clear the slate and do something new,’ but it's ‘Build on what you’re about and what your authentic themes and foundations are,’” he says.

Giffels says the purpose of the book is “to give a voice and give one version of the identity of people who’ve lived through the Rust Belt cycle, and understand it in ways I don’t think the rest of the country does.

“I don’t ever want to write about myself to write about myself. If I’m going to write about myself, it’s to connect with people who’ve had the same experience or present it to an audience that needs to understand that experience.”

Staying in Akron wasn’t something Giffels always had planned. Most of his friends and family had moved away because there was little opportunity for them, or they just wanted to get away from their roots.

However, as he started to establish a career and grow creatively and personally, he learned there really was no reason to leave.

“Everyone thought you had to leave to find all of this, and [I] found it here,” he says. “[I] kind of felt like [I] had a more authentic identity of where [I was]. You face the kind of challenges that make you more alive.”

Giffels takes pride in what Akron was and what it’s becoming.

“There aren’t as many authentic places left in America, and this is one of them,” Giffels says. “Part of the reason is because it’s scarred, and [Akron’s] scars are there and evident, and there’s a personality in that. It’s not about happy and easy; it’s about something real. There’s a natural gravitation toward that but there aren’t many of those places left to gravitate to. So I think America needs to move to Akron.”

Readers can look forward to another book from Giffels, but for now, he’s taking Akron on the road with his book tour.

AAF-Akron’s 2014 ADDY Awards The Akron Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF-Akron) hosted its 69th annual American Advertising Awards (also known as ADDY Awards) ceremony Feb. 21 at the Akron Civic Theatre.

With nearly 300 professionals and students from the Greater Akron advertising community in attendance, 50 professional awards and 10 student awards were given for work completed in the 2013 calendar year.

Three judges from outside the area scored and judged each of the 215 entries. Based on the judging results, the top percentage of work earns Gold ADDYs and the next tier earns Silver ADDYs. There also are five more awards given — Judges Choice (one from each judge), and Best of Show and Student Best of Show (chosen by all three judges as the best entry of the year).

Best of Show was awarded to Geometry Global for the Nokia Comic Con campaign, which also won a Gold ADDY Award. Student Best of Show and a Gold ADDY were earned by Kevin Stuhldreher and Katie Soinski, from The University of Akron, for their Myers Interactive Installation.

Judges Choice Awards were given to: 427 Design for its 427 Design Open House VII campaign; Kron Corp. for the Costley Ct. (funk band) poster; and TRIAD/Next Level for the SmithersOasis Product Guide.

The big winners of the night were 427 Design with eight awards, TRIAD/Next Level with five awards and Kleidon & Associates, WhiteSpace Creative and Kent State University, each with four awards. Many other local agencies, studios and corporations also took home a variety of Gold and Silver awards.

AAF-Akron awarded its 2014 Silver Medal Award to Jack DeLeo, the recently retired president and CEO of Hitchcock Fleming & Associates. This medal represents a lifetime achievement award in advertising and is the highest level of recognition given by the Akron chapter.

The event featured food from 13 local restaurants and caterers, as well as a “Great Gatsby” theme, which drew period-specific costumes from many attendees.

For five local businesses, every day is Bring-Your-Pet-to-Work Day. In Europe, people take their pets everywhere, in stores and to restaurants. Although you won't often see that in the United States, you can sometimes find store owners who invite their animal companions to join them at work, giving a little extra something to customers and visitors.

Tallmadge Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, Tallmadge Scooter traveled a long way from Costa Rica before she ended up tucked in the corner of the Tallmadge branch library’s NatureConnect corner.

Donated by a patron who wanted the turtle to live in a place where children could enjoy her, Scooter was warmly accepted by young and old alike.

Cassie Baldesare, Scooter’s main caretaker, recalls children pressing their faces against the glass making noises at her or putting on a show for her with the library’s turtle puppet. "Most kids, once they know she’s here, come in and go 'Can I go say hi to Scooter?' Or they’re leaving, and they are like, 'Oh, I didn't

say bye to Scooter,'” Baldesare says. "It’s so cute."

Denise Lee, the library’s branch manager, doesn't know how old the turtle is, but she says they recently threw a birthday party to celebrate Scooter's one year with the library.

"I think it’s interesting because we have other playthings," Lee says, "And it’s interesting the kinds of kids that will go sit at the table and watch her. I think she adds something to the area because she’s a live animal."

Lee says Scooter may serve as an incentive to get children to come to the library. w w w. akronlife.com

"It entertains them while they’re here, and I think it gets them interested in animals and pets," she says. "Of course we have books on turtles, and they get checked out when we put them out there. I've actually had some parents ask about turtles and what’s involved in their care because they think it might be a good pet to get for their home."

Baldesare says Scooter is spoiled by the library’s patrons and staff and has learned to beg for food.

"She seems to show off," Baldesare says.

"She's very good at posing. When we're not open, we can take her out and let her run around a little bit, and she's happy."

Lily Lifesource Yoga, Akron Those who practice at Lifesource Yoga know their first step is to go in the boutique and retrieve a kibbles treat to give to the little dapple dachshund waiting at their feet.

Lily, a rescue dog from One of a Kind Pets, and her owner, Debbie Watkins, spend their days in the yoga studio moving in and out of classes. Watkins, who recently retired from the teaching and administration job she had for 35 years, has been doing yoga since the 1970s. Three years ago, she bought Lifesource. "[Lily] just loves to crawl up on people's bellies or snuggle under the blanket with them," Watkins says, "She will make the rounds and visit different students. She just picks her space and then she hangs out."

Watkins enjoys having Lily, her true companion, around while she works her 60- to 70-hour weeks. Lily’s presence in the studio gives it a more homelike environment.

"She's like a therapy dog," she says. "She's so sweet and so people-oriented." Watkins says Lily brings comfort to students to those who need it, especially during the restorative classes, in which students position their body over bolsters and blankets to relax, renew and end stress.

"There are people who can communicate with animals better than they can communicate with others," Watkins says. "Lily just gives unconditional love. … The idea of just being loved and being able to give love. I swear sometimes she senses who needs it, and that's who she gravitates to."

Although Lily is very friendly and calm, she is “very much a little pig” and will let you know when she wants someone to give her a treat. She’s even been known to go through students' bags, looking for food. However, Watkins' students come first.

"We offer free tea to everyone, and Lily's like free tea. She’s just another bonus," Watkins says. "Everybody just loves Lily. I always wanted my zen yoga dog, and I think I finally got it."

Stella Stella and Stumpy - West Hill Hardware, Akron West Hill Hardware has been in the Tschantz family for 83 years, and though Richard Tschantz has only been running it since his father’s retirement in 2005, for the past three decades there have been feline friends roaming the aisles.

Stella and Stumpy, the store's current companions, belong to Tschantz and his family. When their first cat passed away after 15 years in the store, a regular customer approached Tschantz offering a kitten from her cat's litter. Tschantz said there was one condition: The cat had to have dark-colored fur so it didn't look dirty from the dust in the store. The customer came back to the store with two kittens.

"We only wanted one at the time, but one of them only had three legs, and so I didn't want to take the one that had all its legs and leave the other one,” he says. “So we ended up taking both."

Though some customers are allergic to cats or scared of them, Tschantz says he and the customers enjoy having them there.

"I have cats at home, and growing up I've always had cats," he says. "They’re comforting, I suppose. I take them a little for granted."

Usually Stella can be found curled up in a basket, sleeping on the counter or wandering the store, being affectionate with customers.

If it’s summertime, they both can be found wandering the parking lot out back, up on the roof or chasing birds.

"They're always here when you come in in the morning, and they’re the last ones I see at night," Tschantz says.

Sigmund Freud once said, “Time spent with cats is never wasted.”

So much for cat years, however they are calculated; and for nine lives, however defined. Sophie has surpassed them all.

When baby Paige arrived in 1995, Sophie took her in stride. Paige, on the other hand, grew somewhat preoccupied by the pint-sized puma, and her first word wasn’t “mama” or “dada,” but rather, “Doi-yah” — Sophia, in baby talk. As a toddler, Paige both endeared and feared the little black cat. She hugged walls as she crossed Sophie’s path in our home’s narrow hallways and patted her cautiously with affectionate signs of peace.

When we adopted our cat, Sophie, from the Cleveland Animal Protective League June 30, 1990, she was one of seven black kittens from the same litter — tiny, seven-week-old carbon copies of one another swarming about a cage. Sophie joined our family within weeks of our move to our first house. I was 29, newly wed, and the doting new mother of the kitten we named, formally, Sophia. On our first night home, I fashioned a ball out of tin foil and rolled it across the floor to Sophie. Rather than bat the ball, Sophie clenched it between her teeth and skipped toward me as if she had claimed a silver medal. She had spunk, and we loved it, that is until we brought home our newborn baby, Matthew, in 1992 and swung into protective-parent mode. We kept Sophie a safe, look-but-don’t-touch distance from baby Matt. Either unamused or insulted, or probably a bit of both, Sophie retreated under beds and took a backseat for what seemed like years.

We’ve moved to five different homes since our first one, and at each, spent endless hours outside with Sophie as she chomped on luscious grass blades and basked under the sun on warm concrete pavers. She receives every first “Hello” and every last “Goodbye.” Through nearly a quarter-century of our family life, Sophie has remained the one constant.

Her once rich, black, velvety coat is now thin and spotted, and her prance, a wobbly amble. Sophie’s relic toys collect dust and faint passing glances. We’ve grown older and grayer together, and prized material possessions no longer matter. Transitioning into a new season can take a toll on you and your wallet. But don’t fret, it’s never too early to start preparing so you can keep those future costs to a minimum.

Early spring flowers are our first sign that summer’s soon approaching, and we’ve got a few tips for conserving energy in your home while trying to stay cool.

Carmine Torio, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association, says one of the most important ways to conserve energy is to make sure you have a certified heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor assess your home.

The furnace and air conditioner are the home’s largest uses of energy, he says, and they should be in tiptop condition when in use.

“It’s important to make sure they’re running properly, not just for efficiency purposes, but also the health and safety of the home’s occupants,” Torio says.

According to Torio, “these are the national standard for home performance and energy efficiency, and they will look at the home’s overall performance.”

Along with a properly working air conditioner, you also need to make sure your home is well-insulated, Torio says. This means that all windows and doors are properly sealed so no air is escaping. A well-insulated home works year-long in both warm and cool weather.

When it comes to insulating your home, some of the top areas to pay attention to include: • • •

“This will get the homeowner the biggest bang for their buck, but there are several different materials available,” he says. “Make sure your contractor is familiar with all of the options available and can help point you in the direction of what best suits your home’s situation and price range.”

Finally, natural or built-in shading is also important for the warmer months. Shading cools your home from the summer heat and ultimately reduces your energy costs.

Whether kids and teens attend Day Camp or Overnight Camp, they’ll learn about nature, take on new responsibilities, develop essential social skills and gain independence. In essence, summer camps provide life lessons and memories that will last a lifetime.

These memories are the ones that come back to us later in life. We often remember the strangest things at the strangest times, and we wonder why. Stories of our days at camp spark many emotions in us and serve as a reminder of the people we’ve met, places we’ve seen and moments we’ve shared with others. And, as big or small as they may seem, they impact us in some way — even if we don’t realize it.

Robert Fischer, a branch office administrator for Edward Jones Investments in Uniontown, first attended YMCA Camp Y-Noah more than 50 years ago, and he left with what would become a lasting connection between the camp and future generations of his family.

Fischer and his father were in Adventure Guides together, a program which forged a bond that would transition to Fischer’s four children: Rick, Rachel, Rob Jr. and Rebecca — all of whom attended YMCA Camp Y-Noah in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

“When I became a dad in 1970, I could hardly wait to join Adventure Guides with my first son so we could go to weekend campouts at Camp Y-Noah,” Fischer says. “We went to every fall and spring campout. One year, Rick, Rachel and Rob Jr. were all in the programs together, and we attended a winter campout. It was very cold, but great fun.”

Years later, Fischer’s daughter, Rebecca, was born, bringing the family together for even more Adventure Guides outings. At times, all four children attended summer camp.

“When we would go to pick them up, Rick’s first question was always, ‘Can I stay for another week?’”

Fischer says. “They all have great memories of camp, and I think their experiences shaped much of their current family activities because they all love the outdoors. Camp Y-Noah instilled good values in all our children.”

Several of Fischer’s grandchildren continue this tradition today, attending YMCA’s Camp Y-Noah and participating in Day Camp, Equestrian Camp and Overnight Camp. His grandson, David, has participated in camp for more than seven years and is now part of the camp’s leadership team.

The Fischer family’s story is a perfect example of how a camp experience can bring families and friends together for generations. Children, teens, adults and families learn, grow and thrive through enriching activities that develop leadership, social skills and healthy lifestyles.

Grilled Cheese gets Twisted Acorn Alley’s newest restaurant opens its doors. >> After owning a dental lab with her husband for 25 years, Kelly Tannous, her husband, six sons and daughter decided to take the family’s entrepreneurial ambitions in a new direction.

They checked out a spot in Kent’s Acorn Alley (the former location of College Coneys and Creamery), fell in love with the old-fashioned look and small size of the restaurant’s bar and two tables for seating — and Twisted Meltz was born.

“We’ve never done a restaurant before,” Tannous says.

“My son, Steven, has always liked the concept of grilled cheese sandwiches, and we always wanted to gourmet it, and when this space became available, we were like ‘Oh my gosh, this is really cool.’”

Walking into Twisted Meltz, diners are greeted by a chalkboard wall of sandwiches bearing the names of celebrities who attended Kent State like Lou Holtz, Josh Cribbs and Drew Carey. The menu’s ingredients are just as interesting. Imagine a sandwich made with panko-crusted chicken, eggplant, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, Muenster and twisted sauce, and another creation that includes fried potato and cheddar pierogies, hickory bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and sour cream. These unusual combinations are how the restaurant got its name.

“For the sandwiches, Steven researched famous people that have been around Kent, went to Kent or did something big in Kent,” Tannous said. “That’s how we came up with the names. Then we went to a chef and had him cook us different sandwiches, and we kind of did our own thing off of that.”

With the addition of Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream to the menu and a delivery service, business at Twisted Meltz has been going well since its Jan. 6 launch, and Tannous hopes to open a second location run by her other children.

“Kent people are so loyal to their business, and they have really helped spread the word,” she says. “It helps being near the university, and I think it’s neat that this is run by family.”

Dear Readers, Thank you for taking the time to learn more about heart health and its impact, in particular, on women. It is our hope you will take the information from this special section and make it part of your daily life, Going Red to live a long, healthy life.

In its eighth year locally, the Go Red For Women movement has grown to touch the lives of thousands of Summit and Portage county residents.

This is a result of the hard work of our dedicated volunteers and the involvement of so many of our community organizations and businesses who have made the commitment to Wear Red, Speak Red and Go Red for women’s cardiovascular health. Thanks to your support, more messages of women’s heart health are being shared with families, friends, neighbors and coworkers than ever before.

The stats show women are making positive health decisions after becoming engaged with the Go Red For Women campaign, but we know the true motivators are often the stories of people we know – not numbers and charts. We hope the stories shared in this special supplement to akronlife inspire you to learn more about your own health and begin taking steps to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

With training and resources provided by the American Heart Association, women in our community are on their way to becoming healthier. Each of us became involved with Go Red For Women because we believe gathering the community together in education and action is how we will win the fight against heart disease and stroke in women.

We have confidence the knowledge gained through local CPR education, nutrition-based events, physical activity-focused efforts and wellness messaging will continue to be shared from person to person, bringing us ever closer to our goal of lowering the number of women suffering from heart disease and stroke.

Since the national Go Red For Women movement began 11 years ago, thousands of women have taken steps to improve their health, and those joining us at the 2014 Akron Go Red For Women Luncheon will have the chance to see firsthand how the lessons of Go Red For Women have impacted women on a local level. This is Go Red’s eighth year locally.

This year’s event at Quaker Station will include an inspirational keynote address from DeLores Pressley, local exhibitors, touching local survivor stories, a healthy lunch and the opportunity to begin your own journey toward cardiovascular health.

From its inception, Go Red For Women has been instrumental in raising awareness about the connection women have to their No. 1 killer: heart disease. Today the movement challenges all women to Go Red. Sometimes that means wearing red in support of awareness, sometimes it means knowing the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes so you can share them with those you care about. If you Go Red, you’ve taken the time to learn your risk for developing these health threats, and you’re taking steps to decrease those risks.

Igniting Passion for Heart & Stroke Research More than 360 guests from the Greater Akron area joined together at the Akron Heart Ball on Feb. 8 in celebration of the impact continued heart and stroke research can have on those in the community.

The event was held at Quaker Station with the goal of igniting the passion that fuels continued medical advancements to help treat and prevent heart disease and stroke in adults and children. Guests gathered to support research and honor local health leaders for their contributions to the health of the community. They also enjoyed a delicious meal and delighted in entertainment, as well as in the live and silent auctions.

This year’s Heart Ball was generously supported by the event’s Presenting Sponsor, Sterling Jewelers Inc. The organization’s involvement was driven by its commitment to community wellness and to pediatric cardiac research, which was the focus of the Heart Ball’s “Open Your Heart” special appeal.

In an effort to share the impact that funded pediatric cardiac research can have on individuals and families, Valerie Mould shared her story with attendees.

Mould survived heart disease and defects as an infant and young adult.

The Heart Ball honored Stroke Champion Dr. Susana M. Bowling, Summa Health System, and Heart Champions Dr. Mark Jacobstein, The Heart Center at Akron Children’s Hospital, and Dr. Stephen Leslie Tobias, Akron General Health System.

Nick Browning, of FirstMerit, and his wife Cindy co-chaired the event, which raised approximately $250,000 for the American Heart Association’s heart and stroke research and education programs.

Do Something Meaningful Mona Sarkar shares her steps toward heart health.

Have you ever attended an event promoting a worthy cause, pulled out your checkbook, made a contribution and then went about your busy day?

Mona Sarkar, Go Red For Women chair, admits to doing just that, but this year, she challenges women “to not just hear about the importance of heart health, but to act on it … by first taking care of ourselves.”

Sarkar, who is also the National Practice Lead for FirstFamily and Manager of the Charitable Advisory Group for FirstMerit PrivateBank, says she’s incorporated small changes to her life that make a big difference.

“I now keep aspirin in my glove compartment and in my nightstand.

I found out where our AED unit was at FirstMerit, and we called our department in to ask if they knew where it was located; many of them didn’t,” she says. “I try to make at least two healthy lunch choices a week now, and I even started a Zumba class.

“We all need to be aware of heart health issues and make the changes in our personal lives. No matter how inconsequential it may seem, it is empowering.”

Sarkar’s heart healthy changes also have included more walking and using her slow cooker rather than falling for the fast-food trap.

“I’m also more selective on where I want to spend my time. I found the evening work events would just cause me stress on managing work-family balance,” she says. “And, I find the time to laugh everyday. What an easy stress-reliever.”

Sarkar’s passion for Go Red is inspired by her father who passed away from a sudden heart attack in 2010.

“He would probably say this in his Indian accent I so adored, ‘Daughter, I am very proud of you but remember it is not through a title you can make change. You have always had the power to make change. Go do something meaningful,’” she says.

As chair of Go Red, Sarkar says her role is to listen to what women are saying,

be their voice and raise awareness.

She also encourages men to honor the women in their lives by supporting Go Red. “This year, thanks to Jeffrey Heintz, our Red Tie Society chair, we have more Red Tie members than any other year. However, I want more community support. … I want to raise awareness that this issue affects more than just women,” she says.

“And finally, I’d like to see more men and women at the Go Red For Women luncheon. I challenge every woman to invite a man to the lunch this year. Let’s raise awareness.”

Like a Pile of Bricks

Knowing the heart attack warning signs saved Shirley Bradford’s life.

Sometimes heart disease strikes when you least expect it, and Shirley Bradford learned several years ago the importance of listening to her body.

She had just gotten out of her car in a parking lot and was walking a short distance to her destination when she began having sharp chest pains and severe shortness of breath.

“I told my doctor what happened, and he ordered a stress test for me,” she says. “After the test, I went home,

and hours later, my doctor called and told me to get back to Summa immediately. He said, ‘Your stress test was abnormal, and you had a heart attack.’

Supports Go Red for Women

“I noticed the chest pains were unusual, and the shortness of breath was a sign of a heart attack. It felt like a pile of bricks laying on my chest with increased pain and not being able to catch my breath.”

A cardiac catheterization found that Bradford, in her 60s and with a family history of heart disease, had blood vessel disease, and she underwent a cardiac bypass in 2009 at Summa.

Surviving a heart attack could leave some people in a rut, but Bradford is a strong survivor who maintains a heart-healthy lifestyle as well as a positive attitude. Today, she exercises

“I’m living my life and loving my life,” she says.

goRed Making the Right Call 9-1-1 saved Dawn Hawkins’ life.

Dawn Hawkins is the kind of woman who’s always taking care of everyone else. That’s why it was so hard for her to admit she was having a heart attack.

“I woke at 2:30 in the morning with chest pain that felt like a muscle strain,” she says. “I had had a mammogram and thought this pain was the result.”

She slept in her recliner for a while, went back to bed and then got up at 5:30. After taking a shower, she still didn’t feel “right” and decided to work from home. By 10:30, she was nauseated, anxious and in a cold sweat – the classic symptoms of a heart attack.

“I chose to ignore them and discount their importance,” she says. “I didn’t have time to have a heart attack, therefore I couldn’t be having one.”

Despite her family history of heart disease, Hawkins called her sister and asked what she knew about heart attacks.

“She asked me why, and I told her how I felt. She said something smart, ‘You’ve called 9-1-1, right?’ so I called 9-1-1,” she says. “Even then, I was so sure that I was being a hypochondriac that when the EMTs showed up, I walked out of the house without my purse or phone and told them if I was being silly to send me back in. They told me I was not being silly and asked what hospital I wanted to go to.”

At Akron General, she learned she had three blocked arteries, and stents were inserted to hold the arteries open. Not long after her surgery, Hawkins began cardiac rehab with nurse Donna Dannemiller.

“The hardest part was just starting,” Hawkins says. “Once you get into the routine and meet the rehab staff, it becomes enjoyable. You look forward to going, and without realizing it, you find yourself stronger and healthier. …

Donna took me under her wing. She listened to what I was not saying. She saw, and understood, my fear of the unknown.”

Today, Hawkins watches her diet, has reduced her caffeine and bread intake, and — most of all — listens to her body. “I sleep when I’m tired rather than forcing myself to stay up, and I push away from my desk when I feel the stress building,” she says.

Hawkins says this experience has changed her outlook on life.

“The days are sunnier, and life is brighter,” she says. “If you can get out of bed, it’s a great day.”

The Gift of Life

10-year-old Sarah Staudt values her heart health.

When Sarah Staudt’s parents, Karen and Brian, noticed that their normally happy baby was limp on the diaper changing table, they knew it was time to seek medical advice.

Three-week-old Sarah had supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), an arrhythmia that caused her heart to beat too fast. While she was in an Akron Children Hospital ER trauma room, she experienced cardiac arrest.

Her parents later learned that Sarah’s heart had been racing for so long — probably stuck in tachycardia for over 48 hours — it was exhausted. Her pulse had reached about 260, double an infant’s normal rate, and the stress was keeping her heart from pumping effectively.

A week later (having tried medications to control Sarah’s heart rhythm), Dr. John Clark, Sarah’s pediatric cardiologist/electrophysiologist and the director of Akron Children’s Arrhythmia Center, tried doing an ablation surgery to correct her arrhythmia. It didn’t successfully destroy the extra pathway in her heart, and Sarah had to wait until her heart was larger to try the surgery again.

“Sarah took heart medications for five years to control her heart rhythm,” Karen says. “At age 5, Sarah had her second heart surgery at Akron Children’s. This time she benefited from a cryoablation, approved by the FDA the year she was born and made possible through research. This procedure allowed the doctor to use a catheter to freeze the cells that produced the fast heart rhythm. Both of Sarah’s surgeries were catheter procedures and never required open heart surgery.”

Today, Sarah is a fourth grader at Highland Elementary in Stow, with an older brother, Johnathon, and a younger sister, Katherine. Her arrhythmia is no longer a problem, and she hasn’t taken any heart medications since her surgery in 2009.

Karen said Sarah received “world-class care” from Dr. Clark and the medical staff that cared for her daughter, and she encourages parents of children with heart disease to be patient and hopeful.

“Advancements are being made in medical technology every day,” she says. “As parents, you are your child’s best advocate. Stand up for them.

Know that you are doing what is right in their care. Pray and trust that miracles can and do happen.”

As for Sarah, being a heart disease survivor has never limited her physical activities.

“To stay heart healthy, I take dance, play volleyball, and I eat healthy,” Sarah says. “Now that I’m 10, looking back [on] my heart problems and that my heart stopped, it is really amazing that I’m still here. And it’s really a blessing.

Prepared for the Inevitable When Lin Gentile needed a heart valve replacement, she was ready.

Sometimes heart disease doesn’t sneak up on you.

You know your family’s medical history; you’re familiar with the heart disease warning signs, and you’re under the care of a great cardiologist.

Lin Gentile, who works as the vice president of facilities and support services at Akron Children’s Hospital, understands this situation. She’s a longtime volunteer with the American Heart Association, attends the AHA Heart Ball and the Go Red For Women luncheon, and serves on the executive leadership team for the AHA Heart Walk.

By March 2013, Gentile spoke with her cardiologist.

“During another heart cath, I was told it was time [for the surgery] and asked what plans I had for the summer,” she says. “Unfortunately, I also had an infection that other doctors were trying to identify and treat prior to having the valve replacement. That took some time, so we had to wait on the heart surgery.”

On Sept. 20, 2013, Gentile had a heart valve replacement at Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Joe Sabik. Less than six months later, she’s back at the gym, eating well and taking her prescribed medications.

“I’ve always been a fairly positive person. Now it’s even easier to put things in perspective,” she says. “I’m trying to spend more time with my family, and I’m working on a transition plan at Children’s to lighten my workload and looking toward retirement.”

We Support Go Red for Women

For several years, Gentile and her Summa cardiologist, Dr. Otfried Niedermaier, were watching the progression of Gentile’s heart valve issues that were most likely caused by radiation treatments she received at age 30 for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She also knew her father and brother had heart disease.

“We knew it would get worse but didn’t know when, so it took lots of tests and checkups along the way to monitor,” she says.

In addition to her community involvement, Gentile likes to workout, but she had begun to suspect that her heart valve issue was getting progressively worse because she found it tougher to make it through her exercise classes.

“I was having symptoms that my doctors all told me to watch out for: fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty on exertion,” she says.
