The End as We Know It All of the discussion and media attention about the Mayan calendar and the date of Dec. 21, 2012, caused several University of Akron retirees and friends to journey to El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize this past August to see for themselves. We found out that the ancient Mayan calendar does not foretell the “end” but rather the calendar simply starts over!

What’s on your Bucket List?

I didn’t even know I had one until I saw the movie of the same name.

a kid before someone explained the laws of physics to me. But I still had the dream.

By the time I realized that I had a bucket list, I had already done many of the things I would have put on it. Of the things remaining, foremost was jumping from an airplane.

A couple of years ago I agreed to power parachute attached to an experienced instructor. I was going to write a story about the experience, and our photographer, Shane Wynn, was going to photograph the whole thing. The day of the flight, the wind kicked up to an unacceptable speed, and we weren’t able to reschedule before the season ran out. I had shoulder surgery that fall and was out of commission during much of the following year.

I envisioned myself, attached to an experienced sky diving instructor, parachuting from 10,000 feet and landing safely on the ground. Then an odd thing happened: A sky diver attached to an experienced instructor jumped from 10,000 feet and landed in the field next to our farm in Mogadore. Both were killed on impact; their parachute didn’t open properly and the second chute tangled in the first. No sky diving.

Then I fell in love with Ultralites, hang-gliders powered by a small gasoline engine. But when twotime Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi crashed one into his own orange grove, breaking his back and seriously injuring his 5-year old son, I realized the potential dangers inherent in the sport.

The worm turned again. I was driving by one of our parks a couple of years ago when a power parachute literally fell from the sky.

I stopped the car and ran to where the un piloti gently touched down. His parachute was rectangular and multi-colored, a fan-like device about a yard in diameter was strapped to his back. While he unstrapped himself, I peppered him with questions about the safety of power parachuting.

He told me that before he flew for the first time, he had been acrophobic (afraid of heights). His wife had given him an emergency parachute for his birthday. (Nothing says love like an emergency parachute.) He had been as high as a mile or more and never felt in danger. This seemed like a reasonable alternative to sky diving, in fact, better in that I would actually get to fly just like I imagined as

In the meantime, during the immediate recovery and under the influence of heavy painkillers, I saw myself hanging in mid-air, being able to only see my legs and feet and then nothing but empty air for more than a mile down. And it scared the hell out of me. I’ll let you know if I ever do get off the ground. >> I can’t let this month’s cover go by without explaining about the Goodyear racing tire that was used as a prop by photographer Shane Wynn. It once was attached to the left rear corner of Paul Newman’s Nissan race car. I don’t have any proof except the eyewitness who absconded with the tire and wheel from Lime Rock Raceway in Connecticut where Paul Newman had been testing the new 280ZXR Nissan. In truth, his team pulled out of the race track and left the used tire and wheel behind. So maybe "abscond" isn’t the right word.

They found their way to me sometime in the ‘90s and have been displayed in my offices ever since.

I’ve always thought it was pretty cool, but not long ago a young intern asked me about it, and I told her very proudly that it had belonged to Paul Newman. She stared at me blankly and asked, “Who’s Paul Newman?” I might as well have said that it was once owned by Rudolph Valentino. and her recognition level would not have been lower. To her, it was just a dirty old tire. The baby in the tire, however, is a fresh young thing named Vivian Rose Stewart.

Even the intern would recognize that.

The amount of paper recycled during the 3rd annual mixed paper drive competition. The event was sponsored by Keep Akron Beautiful (KAB) in conjunction with the River Valley Paper Company in recognition of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, 2012. The competition consisted of 24 Akron public schools and nine private schools in the Akron area competing to recycle the most paper between Oct. 15 and Nov. 9.

Dubbed the “Golden Flasher” by the media, a middle-aged man sent Kent State into a tizzy after exposing himself to groups of people

on campus. First-hand reports call into question the city’s repeated claims that “big things are happening in Kent.”

A Mentor police officer is in trouble after putting his head in a bucket of urine on a dare from fellow officers. Upon hearing the story, local news outlets were frustrated they’d already assigned “Golden Flasher” to the subject of a previous news story.

Cuyahoga Falls police Tased and arrested an Akron man for burglary and resisting arrest after a resident awoke to find the assailant sleeping in his bed. The defendant is countersuing the homeowner for having delicious Sleepytime Tea in his cupboard, which he says prevented a successful burglary.

A Munroe Falls man was cited when he showed up at the Stow Police Department to retrieve his truck — which he’d abandoned after getting stuck turfing an animal hospital’s lawn. The man also asked about the MacArthur Genius Grant he was due but officers couldn’t find evidence to verify the story.

After being stopped on I-480 for traveling 115 MPH, a Windham man reportedly bragged to officers that he usually drives at higher speeds between 160-190 MPH. The man also made a number of other claims, including one that he ran a marathon in under two hours.

“No Storm Lasts Forever” / A father’s journey by Dr. Terry A. Gordon /

“It is not often that something is placed before us that defines in crystal clear fashion, our purpose,” says Terry Gordon, a retired cardiologist and author of the book, “No Storm Lasts Forever.”

For Gordon, that moment came when a 15-year-old Brunswick High School football player died of sudden cardiac arrest, and the people who tried so desperately to revive him didn’t have the means to do so. Gordon says if an automated external defibrillator, or AED, had been available that night, Josh Miller might still be alive today.

I was experiencing,” he says.

“Over the course of the 2-1/2 years it took me to complete my manuscript, I found that the journal imparted to me an unencumbered view of the whole process, revealing the progress I had made along this, at times, dreadful path.”

“At the time of Josh’s death, I was the president of our local American Heart Association, and I vowed this would never happen again in our community,” he says. “We ultimately raised the funds to place AEDs in all of our middle and high schools, becoming the first county of its size in the nation to do so.”

As a final reflection on his work, Gordon cites an ancient text of Judaism called the Kabbalah, which reads, “The falls of our life provide us with the energy to propel ourselves to a much higher level.”

For his efforts, Gordon was named the American Heart Association’s National Physician of the Year in 2002. His initiatives convinced Ohio legislators to pass the State of Ohio School AED Initiative, a $5 million grant that placed nearly 5,000 AEDs in schools throughout Ohio and trained five individuals in each school in CPR and the use of AEDs. To date, at least 15 lives have been saved as a result of his initiative, and a national bill to place AEDs in every school in our country is currently awaiting passage in the Senate. >> In June 2009, Gordon’s own life was thrust into turmoil when his son Tyler was paralyzed in a near-fatal car accident. Though this tragedy weighed heavily on Gordon and the rest of his family, through months of reflection and healing, he ultimately came to a point of acceptance and even enlightenment.

In his book, “No Storm Lasts Forever,” Gordon describes his family’s struggle to piece their lives back together after the accident and the revelations he made along the way.

“Even in the midst of profound sadness, if you allow yourself to look around, you can focus on beauty that lies right before your eyes,” he says. “It’s there right alongside the suffering.”

Part of Gordon’s struggle throughout the book and in his personal life was answering key questions: Why do bad things happen to us? Why must we suffer? What purpose do these things serve?

“It would take quite some time for me to sift through the quagmire in

order to uncover them,” he says.

“I learned that all the pain and turmoil of this existence, those things that cause us to suffer, are beautifully balanced and coupled with those things that bring us pleasure.”

Instead of seeking counseling after his son’s accident, Gordon used writing as his own form of therapy. Putting his thoughts on paper drew out the pain he couldn’t talk about in person and ultimately helped to relieve it.

“It’s the falls of our life, the difficulties we face that can be a source of strength that enable us to rise above adversity,” he says.

She’s the ultimate book reader, line leader and ABC’er. She’s the queen of circle time, snack time and play time — and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Kelley began teaching at her local church, and when she wanted to learn more about education, she read books and attended conferences.

When the Shaw Jewish Community Center in Akron approached her to teach 2-year-olds, she reluctantly accepted the position. Today, over 30 years later, she’s still teaching at the same school and has had the same classroom helper, Patti Ulrich, for about 15 years.

Having interacted with so many children over the years, Kelley knows what works and what doesn’t. She understands how to talk to kids and how to open their minds to learning.

She once attended a conference in which the teachers were told that they can either cause children to love school or hate it. Many dropped out of the conference because it was too much responsibility for them.

“I took it as a challenge. I want to have these kids believe that learning is fun,” she says. “I want them to have the time of their lives in my classroom.”

Why did you pursue teaching? Did you expect you’d be teaching for over 30 years?

SK: I didn’t always want to be a teacher, but I always had people skills. I think it started with my baby brother; I helped with him when he was young. He was such a joy! As I grew older, I always found

myself teaching and helping others.

I remember taking piano lessons and then teaching everyone else the tunes.

It takes a lot of patience to train children, and not many people have the patience. They yell, and yelling is not teaching. Teaching is training these kids to do the right thing.

I never imagined I’d be here so long but I love what I do, and time has gone by so quickly. When something is your passion, time flies. I haven’t even considered retiring. I take it one day at a time.

What’s the most rewarding part of your profession?

SK: Seeing how my children grow into loving, caring, kind adults. A couple of girls that I taught are now teachers, and they come and visit me. A lot of my former students who were friends when they were two are still friends to this day.

What was it like to win the “This City Reads! Literacy is Life Award” last year?

SK: It was amazing! My boss, Lori Bernstein [director of the Shaw JCC’s Early Childhood Education and School-Age Services] nominated me for the award. There was a breakfast at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, and they surprised me.

I’m so naïve; I opened the program and said, “Look! There’s a woman speaking today named Sherry Kelley too! She has my name!” Then they had to tell me it was me. I was so shocked but I was also honored.

I love books and love training my children to love them as well, to turn pages, and to teach them that letters form words.

What are the most typical questions parents ask you?

SK: They mostly ask me how I do it all day, every day! I tell them it’s a passion and a gift, and I love it so much. You couldn’t do what I do unless you love it. Potty training is also a big thing, especially with boys. I just tell parents that boys are little men, and they’re stubborn; they won’t potty train until they’re ready.

How should parents deal with “The Terrible Twos”?

SK: I don’t believe in The Terrible Twos. People just don’t know how to talk or communicate with 2-year-olds. Children don’t understand abstract concepts. Telling them to “stop being mean” or “to share” is not the answer; those are not concrete. You have to tell them that friends are for loving and not hitting, that we hit pillows instead if we’re upset. Instead of sharing, I tell them about “taking turns” — it makes things more concrete.

What do the kids learn in your classroom?

SK: They learn listening skills, following directions and self-control. I teach them ABCs, words, books and puzzles. I try to develop their fine motor skills by using Legos and building with small blocks. Bouncing basketballs and running around the gym develop their gross motor skills. I’m always switching things up in my classroom. My children are always different, and they learn differently from one another.

Do you have children or grandchildren?

SK: I have two children, and my three wonderful grandchildren have all come through the JCC for schooling. I even have a great-granddaughter who’s 1-1/2 years old; I really hope she comes here when she’s two!

In my spare time, you’ll find me …

SK: Babysitting! I baby-sit at weddings, bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs. I love spending any spare time I have with children; I know that’s not normal for most people, but I love it.

What would surprise us about you?

Hillary Clinton once said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” That concept is easy to grasp but it’s not until you have a child that you actually understand what it means.

You don’t need a license to become a parent. You don’t need anything but a car seat to take your baby home from the hospital, and once there, you quickly learn that children don’t come with instructions. It doesn’t matter how many books you read or how many classes you take, nothing can prepare you for parenthood. It’s on-the-job training.

After our daughter was born, a single friend asked me what parenthood was like, and I told her it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. She seemed taken aback so I clarified. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve done,” I said, “but the most rewarding.”

No term paper in school, no project at work, no interview I’d ever done is as challenging as being a parent. That’s because there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to kids. They’re forces of nature, and like the weather, you can’t predict what they’ll do. That’s part of what makes them so wonderful — and so exhausting.

So, in the spirit of parenthood, I’d like to thank the village of people who have shaped the kind of mother I am, who have given me strength when I was at my wits’ end and who have served as beacons when I was lost. Here’s to you.

To my parents and my in-laws: Thank you for being such amazing grandparents. You can do things with the kids I wish I had time to do. Without your expertise and enthusiasm, homemade Halloween costumes and fairy gardens would just be ideas, never to see the light of day.

To our friends who shared parenting advice: Thank you for reminding us that we don’t have to be perfect parents, we just have to be present.

To our children’s teachers: Thank you for your patience and encouragement. We hope to repay you by raising future Tony- and Nobel- prizewinners who will, no doubt, thank you in their acceptance speeches.

To retail employees and restaurant staff members who are good with kids: Thank you for showing interest in my kids, conversing with them and treating them like children rather than annoyances. You let my son play with your toy VW Bug (Ang at Rubber City Clothing), have a free toy basket in your studio (Cari at Sunthing Special) and allowed my kids to choose their own stickers (Camille at Retro Dog.)

These small acts mean so much to parents, and in the end, it costs you next to nothing and is a win-win.

To the woman in the Wendy’s drive-thru line: Thank you for being in the right place at the right time several winters ago, when I accidentally closed the car door on my daughter’s hand. “Stick her hand in the snow,” you shouted from your window, and I did, and my daughter survived, bruised but intact. And when I looked up to thank you, you were gone … like a fairy godmother.

To the person who designed the track inside Dick’s Sporting Goods in Montrose: Thank you for providing a place for my kids to run while my husband tries on sneakers. A couple of laps before we leave, and the kids are out like a light before we get to Market Street.

To Summit Mall: Thank you for building the children’s playground in Center Court.

It’s THE PLACE to see and be seen for the 7-and-under set. And, it’s a spot where parents can have their own time-out while letting the kids play in a safe space. And, it has outlets where grownups can charge their phone. And, it’s right across from Starbucks … winner!

And, saving the best for last, to my husband: Thank you for taking on this ginormous responsibility with me. Thank you for not laughing (too hard) when I say things like “ginormous.” Thank you for putting up with my obsession with making the kids’ birthday cakes. Thank you for not flinching when, after a long day with the kids, I tap you on the chest, say “Tag, you’re it” and head upstairs for a nap.

The Means Behind the Scenes / WITAN members raise funds to help Akron’s nonprofits. /

In every community, there’s a group of people that keeps the city thriving and successful. In Akron, one of those groups is WITAN, a nonprofit that attracts Akron’s most dynamic women of all ages and from all walks of life. The organization name, WITAN, is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “Witenagemot,” meaning a group of carefully selected leaders operating under democratic rule.

Since its founding in 1943, WITAN has raised and granted more than $2 million to area agencies, and WITAN’s members have performed more than 3 million hours of volunteer service.

With a current membership of over 300 women, WITAN has three different “classes” of membership. The first is an annual Conditional Class of prospective members that usually includes 20 to 25 women. After the first year, these women become active members of the organization; there are presently around 90 at this level.

Then, after many years of active membership, a woman can become a “sustaining” member which means that she’ll always be a part of WITAN but she’s no longer required to fulfill the duties of an active member.

According to Beth Fink, WITAN Imagine Ball Committee Chair, the group’s oldest active member is 72, and WITAN has sustaining members in their 90s. She says WITAN has several sustaining members who continue to volunteer, attend business meetings and work at WITAN’s events.

To maintain active membership within WITAN, every active and conditional member must pay dues, attend three membership meetings each year, volunteer a mini-

mum of 30 hours annually at an approved location and must work at WITAN’s annual 2-day juried, invitational art show, The French Market. The ladies also take on several smaller, short-term projects throughout the year.

Fink says The French Market and the annual gala (this year called The Imagine Ball) have been held annually for nearly 25 years and provide nearly $50,000 annually to help 501(c)3 nonprofit agencies or organizations that serve the needs of the greater Akron area.

In addition to fundraising efforts, WITAN offers “socialization with a purpose” with its autumn party and holiday event to collect toys or coats for children in need. >> An interest in volunteering is one reawomen join WITAN. Fink says WITAN also is a fantastic venue to meet new people and establish long term friendships.

“I’m a 21-year member, and the folks I met in my very first year in WITAN continue to be close friends,” she says. “We all come to WITAN from different walks of life and different age groups, and we discover the talents and abilities of each other through WITAN.”

“I’ve enjoyed so much what the organization has to offer. This is a very hard-working group of women. Our efforts have paid such great dividends: socially in building true friendships, and especially providing for others who are in need in our community. If a woman really wants to imagine the difference she can make, WITAN may very well be her answer.”

FLASH A Look Back at Social Events of 2012 Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center’s 9th Annual Butterfly Gala The gorgeous home of Dr. Kevin and Brenda Spear was the backdrop for Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center’s 9th Annual Butterfly Gala on July 21. The Spears welcomed more than 450 people onto their property, and the organization raised more than $182,000. The gala enables Stewart’s to offer free services and programs to those touched by cancer.

This year’s theme, An Evening in Paris, inspired everything from the decorations to the éclairs served for dessert. Guests were greeted with champagne and Parisian music and had the opportunity to get pictures taken under the weeping willow and in front of a 15-foot Eiffel Tower. Among the live and silent auction items were sporting adventures, health and beauty spa packages, entertainment-filled weekends and even a jukebox. The Akron General Medical Center’s Women’s Board transformed Portage Country Club into a James Bond-style movie set with a dinner and live auction for the organization’s annual Gala.

Four-hundred people attended the event, which was expected to raise more than $100,000 for the new Neuroscience Institute at AGMC. The evening began with specialty martinis and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner was served followed by a live auction with auctioneer Dick Kiko.

Entertainment and a casino night with donated prizes wrapped up the evening’s festivities.

The Women’s Board honored the memory and accomplishments of Dr. Kamel Muakkassa.

“Yes, please,” to veggies

egetarian Cullen Taussig and his fellow Hudson pals, Garrett Murdoch and Matthew Henry, meet every Tuesday for “wing night” at Buffalo Wild Wings in Streetsboro. It’s an unexpected setting for a vegetarian, but 20-year-old Taussig stays clearly in the fold, yet on the fray, of the ritual gathering. He pays no mind to the basket of wings on the table and munches on a cheese quesadilla.

“I still give him a hard time,” says Henry, who has been dining on mainstream meat meals alongside his vegetarian friend for more than a decade.

Accustomed to the friendly razzing, Taussig, who was raised as a vegetarian, says he can’t imagine ever eating meat. He has never — ever — had a burger, a steak or a chicken wing.

“Meat, when I see it, doesn’t look or smell unappetizing, but I don’t have an interest in it,” he says. “I don’t know what it tastes like. I don’t have a draw to it.”

While Taussig’s vegetarian upbringing places him in the minority — a 2007 Centers for Disease Control poll found that one in 200 children 18 and younger are vegetarian — a meatless diet can be a healthy choice for a growing child.

“It’s becoming more common as people, in general, become more health conscious,” says Dr. Susan Shah, a Twinsburg pediatrician with Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics. “You can have just as healthy a vegetarian diet as one containing animal products. I don’t recommend one over another. It’s all about balance.”

That balance, Shah says, includes a diet offering necessary nutrients. A well-rounded vegetarian diet lacks only vitamin B-12, which supplements easily supply. Shah points out that vitamin B-12 dosage requirements vary with a person’s age and should be physician-directed.

Maintaining a nutrient-sufficient vegan diet, or one without animal products, is only slightly trickier. Shah says a vegan diet could lack necessary amounts of calcium, which nondairy foods like kale, bok choy, almonds and tomatoes provide. >> Emma Fobean, a 16-year-old Hoban High School student, made the switch from a vegetarian to a vegan diet several months ago, after researching cruelty to farm animals.

“I was looking up information about animals and how they were treated, and it sort of all culminated that I should go vegan, that it’s the best way to help them out,” she says.

While Fobean says at the start of her vegan diet she faced challenges with food options — think traditional peanut butter cookies containing

eggs — she has since discovered a trove of choices. Her favorites — fried zucchini, vegan muffins and pasta tossed with vegetables — find their place at the family dinner table thanks to her parents’ support of her diet.

“For teens, I would say it’s not as hard as it sounds,” she says. “If you know what you need to put meals together, it’s not difficult.”

Fobean says she plans to stay the vegan course. “I don’t see a reason for consuming animal products,” she says. “I see myself being vegan for the rest of my life.”

Motivated by both the personal health and animal welfare benefits of a vegetarian diet, Taussig says he’s committed to vegetarianism for life.

Growing up in a household with a vegan father and a vegetarian mother, sister and brother, Taussig says his family kitchen has always supplied a steady stream of meatless selections. His years spent at campsites as an eventual Eagle Scout, however, tested his vegetarian lifestyle.

“With that comes campfires and cooking lots of hotdogs. I had to find alternatives. I wasn’t about to change my ways,” says Taussig, who would fill his hotdog buns with lettuce and cheese and snack on apples and energy bars along hiking trails. “I tended to eat more often than my meat-eating counterparts because I didn’t have large protein-filled meals that would sustain me. I’m more of a grazer. You learn very early that you have to find unique ways to replenish as a hiker, to combat getting empty or feeling hungry.”

Taussig and Fobean both say they have friends who have expressed interest in vegetarianism, but none have taken the plunge. After all, these are deep waters to navigate without a lifeline of family support, especially if you’re a child not in charge of filling the home refrigerator.

“If you do your research and show your parents options, they can be supportive,” Fobean says.

Taussig suggests that youngsters ease into vegetarianism by starting as flexitarians, or part-time vegetarians. For instance, designate Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to planning and helping to prepare tasty vegetarian meals for the whole family.

“If kids can possibly show their parents that they can make good-tasting vegetarian meals, it’s a start, but it’s a slow process,” Taussig says. “I know how lucky I am to have had my parents make that decision and to follow suit. How to fall down the rabbit hole without losing your mind.

melia Gippin loves “Alice in Wonderland.” Really loves it.

A lot.

“She’s seen the movie about a million times,” says her mom, Shane Wynn.

So when it came time to plan Amelia’s 4th birthday party, the theme was a no-brainer for Wynn and her husband, Josh Gippin. Because the “Alice in Wonderland” story is so complex with so many creative possibilities and characters, Wynn chose several of Amelia’s favorites and incorporated them into the invitation, décor, food, entertainment and favors.

The party, which took place last September in the backyard of the family’s Highland Square home, included 35 guests. Among them were relatives, Amelia’s friends and their parents and siblings.

Invitation Wynn used evite.com and selected a brightly-colored teapot and checkerboard design for Amelia’s invitation.

This website is helpful for planning because it keeps track of RSVPs so the party-planner doesn’t have to. And, because it’s online, there’s no need to buy stamps.

Décor A Mad Hatter’s tea party is a musthave for this kind of celebration so antique chairs and couches were moved outside, along with a table set with teacups and teapots that Wynn bought at estate sales. The teapots were filled with iced sweet tea.

Wynn found oversized playing cards at a garage sale and turned them into a banner that framed the scene. She also ordered Amelia’s “Alice” costume online at etsy.com; her daughter continues to wear it as a dress.

Food Party guests enjoyed food catered by Hudson’s Restaurant in Montrose. The

grownups sampled mini sandwiches, goat cheese-stuffed peppadew peppers, the Queen of Hearts’ phyllo tarts, Tuscan flatbread and grilled vegetables.

With kids, finger foods are always the smart way to go, and both the young- and the young-at-heart enjoyed boneless chicken wings with barbecue sauce, fresh fruit skewers and spiral-cut potato chips.

The children went crazy over tiny, corked glass bottles filled with pink and blue fruit drinks, tied with notes that read, “Drink Me.” For dessert, guests ate pastel mini cakes printed with the words, “Eat Me,” just like in the movie.

Entertainment To keep the kids occupied, the backyard was transformed into a croquet court with balls, mallets and wickets.

Wynn’s mom, Diana Kunze (who dressed as the Queen of Hearts), made white tissue paper roses, which the children painted red.

Local balloon artist Mot Buchanan served as the Mad Hatter and made whimsical balloon-sculpture headwear for the children and adults. Wynn’s sister, Jen, dressed as the White Rabbit, carried an alarm clock and reminded the children at dessert time that they were “late for a very important date.”

Favors The centerpiece for the tea party table was a small bush, decorated with ribbon necklaces, each strung with a key to open a magical door. The adults were amused watching the kids run around the backyard, trying to find a door to unlock. >>Whatever theme you choose for your next family celebration, the Internet is a great source for ideas and products that you can’t find locally.

So, you’re sending your 18-year-old baby off to college. What should you expect? And how should students get ready for the most significant decision of their young life?

“We like to tell students and their families that it’s all about finding the right fit,” says Amanda Paulus, Enrollment Management and Student Services Advisor of Kent State University at Stark.

According to Paulus, this means getting onto college campuses early and visiting often, as well as arranging to meet with an admissions counselor, having a guided tour of campus and, if possible, talking with faculty.

“It’s not until you’re walking the halls and greens of campus that you truly get a sense for the environment that you will be investing in,” she says.

Sarah Bishop, a graduate from The University of Akron and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, says parents should know that the first year at college is often the most difficult, and students are often forced to learn through trial and error.

Having an empathetic parent during this time can make students aware that mistakes are part of the process and reminds them that someone’s in their corner, even when the right path isn’t clear.

“Parents often feel anxious about sending their kids off to college for the first time, but sometimes it’s less obvious that the students are feeling insecure themselves,” Bishop says.

“A parent’s calm influence during the process can make a huge difference.”

Things are going to change for your teenager whether you like it or not. Their newborn freedom may come to haunt them in the long run. Bishop, who has also worked as an adjunct professor at Kent State University, strongly recommends that first-time students prepare to be their own motivators.

“No one forces them to get out of bed in the morning, and instructors won’t come looking for them if they don’t attend class,” she says.

“But this freedom often becomes a detriment when students realize they’re behind and aren’t sure what to do about it.” >> It’s important to come prepared when picking the right college. Students should make a list of what they hope to get out of their visit and see if the school meets those expectations. They should explore every inch of the university so they have plenty of reasons to make a final decision.

“Choosing the right school is never about a single characteristic, but rather making sure that the big picture fits together well and is appealing as a whole,” Bishop says.

One of the most crucial things a first-time student should find is a healthy middleground between school and social endeavors.

Some students walk a thin line between the two during their first few semesters on campus.

“The truth is, most college students can find the balance between the social aspect and the actual education part of college,” says Hannah Harbert, an instructor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University. “It might take them getting a D on an exam to find the balance, but it will happen.”

If there’s one thing that will ensure success more than anything else, it’s keeping an open mind and being willing to accept

criticism. “You’re new at this, and the faculty members are the experts,” Harbert says.

“You need to be a sponge and forego any all-knowing mindset you may have arrived with.”

And finally, parents need to be aware that it’s time to loosen the reigns.

“They’re not doing their children any favors by completing their college applications for them, scheduling their campus visits or choosing a major on their behalf,” Paulus says. “Parents need to encourage independence and sound decision-making, and this can only begin if a parent lets students take the initiative.” / Writer and web editor Aaron Fowler received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kent State University.

Take more than mental notes of the campus when you visit. Make a list of the pros and cons of each school you visit, and snap a few pictures on your smart phone of places you enjoy or things you may want to research further.

FIVE Sneak away to check out the residential buildings and social activities going on around campus. Model dorms or apartments are occasionally fashioned to look like they belong in an Ikea catalog. Make sure you get an eye for what you’ll really be experiencing at the beginning of the school year. Also, be on the lookout for what’s going on in the area. Having a social life at school can be just as important as studying for your next exam.

As a financial advisor, I’m frequently asked for advice on college saving. The first thing I tell my client is that it’s never too early to start saving for college, which will allow the money more time to grow.

And, it’s also never too late to start.

Busy lifestyles and multiple priorities make investing and college saving more challenging than ever. In today’s complex and ever-changing financial marketplace, it’s important to evaluate and talk about all of the available options for college planning.

529 Plans A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to aid in saving for the cost of higher education. 529 plans are “qualified tuition plans” sponsored by states, state agencies or educational institutions. These tax* advantages and sponsorships are authorized by Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code.

There are two types of 529 plans: prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. All 50 states and the District of Columbia sponsor at least one type of 529 plan. In addition, a group of private colleges and universities sponsors a pre-paid tuition plan according to each state’s website.

Ohio sponsors two 529 plans that offer a variety of investment options that you can manage yourself and one that offers professional guidance.

One of the biggest benefits of 529 plans is the tax advantages* they offer if used for college expenses.

Savings Bonds While they may not provide as high a return as other investments, they’re easy to purchase and their value is easy to estimate. The interest is exempt from federal and state income taxes* when used for

certain college expenses such as tuition but not for room and board.

Savings Accounts Savings accounts are typically used by students already in college who need access to liquid funds. Most savings accounts don’t cost anything to set up, and the money is FDIC insured. In today’s rate environment, savings accounts earn little to no interest, so these accounts may not grow much.

You Earned It. Certificates Of Deposit CDs are also FDIC insured, although they lock up the money for a specified time, limiting their liquidity. The CD benefit is that the money is more secure.

The current disadvantage is that the interest rate is likely less than 1 percent.

CDs are a good option for students who will go to college in a year or two, already have significant money saved in a 529 plan and don’t want any additional investment risks.

Teaching Teens About Money / Young adults need financial management skills to survive. /

As children blossom into young men and women, most insist on planning and running their own lives. Parents worry about all the basic essentials for their kids’ independent living, like housing, eating properly, staying warm, being careful at night and more. But most parents forget to teach their youngsters one of the most important lessons of all — financial responsibility. The resulting turmoil can spell disaster for a child’s future.

Consider this: The average young adult amasses $45,000 in debt by the time they turn 29, according to a recent PNC Bank report.

“This generation of 20-somethings was raised during an economically-thriving period,” says financial expert Mark Hansen, author of “Success 101 for Teens.” “Undisciplined spending habits, student and car loans, and a tough job market have stymied their financial growth. Perhaps the worst culprit is financial ignorance, but we can count this as a lesson for future 20-somethings.”

For young people, organizing finances can be intimidating to the point of prohibitive, he says.

“We need to have a curriculum in schools, from kindergarten through 12th grade, that ensures our kids graduate with financial literacy,” he says. “From balancing a checkbook to understanding what it means to pay — and earn — interest, kids need basic money management skills to survive in the world, and most aren’t getting them.”

Hansen says all teens should know and practice these techniques so they can control their financial destinies.

• Saving for dreams: The three-envelope method: Use the first envelope for your day-to-day expenses: gas or lunch money. Pause before blowing this money at the movie theater or a fast-food

• How to create a budget: A budget lets us know what’s possible, and not possible, with money. There are six steps to creating a budget.

1. List all of your expenses.

2. List all income.

3. List monthly expenses.

4. Add up these lists separately.

5. Tweak your budget so you can meet your expenses with money left over for savings.

6. Review your budget every week.

• How to set and follow through on goals: First, figure out what your current finances are, then determine what they’ll be in the future — one year out, then two years out, then four years later. How will you get to your one- or two-year goal? You need a plan, and most of the time that means either earning more money, spending less or a combination of the two. Finally, you have to stick to your plan for it to work.

• Understanding interest rates, such as credit cards: Interest is a fee paid for using someone else’s money. Simple interest is straightforward: 5 percent accrued in your bank account with $100 yields $5 in interest at the end of the year. Compound interest, however, means ever-increasing amounts.

This is crucial to understanding debt you may take on from lenders. Know what you’re borrowing, and the terms that go

along with it. Just as your money can work for you in a bank account, money borrowed can work against you if it’s not paid back in a timely manner.

• How to write checks and balance a checkbook: These days, it’s easier than ever to review accounts online, which automatically tracks exchanges. However, banks do make mistakes, which is why it’s wise to track your accounts independently. Ask. Don’t be embarrassed. Banks are putting a premium on service and want to establish a positive relationship with young customers. If you have a question, speak to someone at the bank. As you take control of your money, you’ll also take control of your life.

Weddings are steeped in tradition but today’s couples are making their own rules.

When you receive a wedding invitation, you automatically assume certain things will be part of the special day: the dramatic white gown, the iconic march down the aisle and the joyful reception filled with dancing and tearful toasts.

And while most ceremonies stick to tradition on the big stuff, many brides and grooms are opting to inject their personalities into the day’s festivities through clever cake decoration, quirky foods and memorable favors that are all their own.

Ashley Williams, certified event coordinator for Piece of Cake Event Coordinating in Medina, creates highly customized wedding packages throughout Northeast Ohio. Her company was voted Best Wedding Planner of 2012 in the FOX 8 Akron-Canton HOT LIST. From the groom serenading his new wife to a New Year’s Eve wedding with a raucous countdown, Williams guides couples in creating their own storybook weddings.

“My best advice on how to add unique elements to the wedding is to focus on the interests and hobbies of the couple,” Williams says. “For example, I had a couple who loved their dog so much and couldn’t imagine not incorporating him in the ceremony. Actually having their dog there wasn’t practical so they made a cartoon cardboard cutout of him and had it standing at the altar with them.”

Guests were enticed onto the dance floor with masks and noisemakers, the ceremony was translated into Spanish for all attendees to appreciate, and guests were prompted to show off their artistic talents.

“The bride and groom had their guests paint a picture for them. Instead of the traditional sign-in book, each guest painted a different part of the picture so they could hang it in their new home,” Williams says.

Williams says one couple invited their wedding guests to sign a quilt rather than the traditional sign-in books. Other weddings included personal touches, such as laying down the red carpet for a movie-loving couple or using the names of bands instead of table numbers for a couple who met at a radio station.

Finding the right venue can be a challenge, but not everyone needs (or wants) a banquet hall. One couple, Williams recalls, held their (See WEDDING, page 51)

“We both love the style of dress during that era, and we’re also both huge fans of the HBO series, ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ which takes place in that time period,” Jenny says. “We chose to have a majority of our pictures taken at the Hyatt Arcade Hotel, where we and most of our guests stayed. Being a historic hotel, it certainly fit the overall theme of the day.”

Jenny says about 75 percent of her wedding guests participated in the theme and dressed in 1920s-style attire but, she adds, “Prohibition certainly did not apply during the reception, though.”

Ben and Jenny say engaged couples should do what they want for their wedding day.

“Don’t let other people influence you too much. Your wedding is a day for the two of you to remember, so make sure you do it up in a way that’s going to make you both happy,” Jenny says. “Also, don’t let your heart get set on one certain aspect or over-worry about minor details. Things will come up that alter your plans a bit.”

reception at the Akron Art Museum. They chose to forego the traditional sit-down dinner and invited guests to dance, mingle all night and tour the museum throughout the entire event.

Not only do personalized elements dazzle guests who have likely seen their fair share of traditional weddings, but creative thinking and planning ahead can even save money.

“Some of the most common requests I have from my clients are how to incorporate candy bars or tables and photo booths. They’re a great way to create a memory, escort card and favor all in one. They can be fantastic moneysavers and are always a lot of fun!” she says. >> Williams also recommends that couples reconsider traditions that don’t make sense for their particular occasion.

“If your wedding is out-of-town or if you have a lot of out-of-town guests who you really want to attend the wedding, send out savethe-dates,” Williams says. “Otherwise, I’d save the money and put it toward the invitations themselves. They’re so important and set the tone for the entire event.”

Taking into account other members of the wedding party can add surprising touches as well. In one case, Williams says the young ring bearer slurped on a ring-shaped sucker while walking down the aisle instead of carrying actual rings, and the flower girl handed out blooms instead of dropping petals.

Personalized elements can extend beyond the wedding and reception. Parties following the rehearsal dinner are gaining popularity, Williams says, through intimate bonfires or gatherings at favorite local watering holes. But ultimately, the day is for the bride and groom, and the wedding should reflect that.

“Adding personal touches can make all the difference when trying to create a memorable event,” Williams says. “Guests enjoy seeing the couple’s personality played out in the ceremony and the reception.”

Heather and Aaron were married Sept. 22, 2012 at the First Congregational Church of Akron, and their reception was at the SYB Hall in Stow.

The bride loved the movie, “Bridesmaids,” so she chose to re-enact the movie poster with her bridal party on her wedding day. “I thought it would be funny to have that particular photo, with the same poses, hung in our entertainment room,” she says. “I think this photo will make great gifts for my bridesmaids. I plan on making them a copy as a thank-you gift!”

Heather also had specific poses that she wanted to have captured on her wedding day so she compiled a Pinterest page with all her ideas.

“My photographer, Shane Wynn, was able to view these photos and get some ideas of what I was looking for on my big day,” she says.

Heather says brides-to-be should focus on what’s important to them on that day and where they want to spend their money. She says her reception venue provided a list of recommended vendors, which made choosing caterers, florists and other special occasion businesses much easier.

“My last piece of advice? Enjoy every moment of your big day because it goes by way too fast,” she says.

Favorite part: It’s difficult to identify a single moment from a days’ worth of excitement, but nothing will ever top the moment we met eyes for the first time down the aisle.

Tough call: Since the wedding was in a backyard (albeit a big backyard), we had to put a cap on the number of guests. The most challenging part was making a guest list and deciding who could come. We had around 150 guests, and for us, that was the perfect size! We mingled and spoke with everyone, and there was a good balance of friends and family.

Biggest hit: It was never our intention to plan a wedding that could be defined by a single moment. Instead, we envisioned an evening full of talking points, laughter, dancing and fun. Our friends aren’t talking about just a single point; they’re still talking about the whole wedding!

Dress love: My dress was perfect! It was primarily made of tulle with a rhinestone belt.

The structure underneath was fitted, had a sweetheart neckline and flowed from the waist down. The tulle was draped overtop, which made it light, airy, fun and beautiful.

When trying on dresses, I was out of the room when my mom, maid-of-honor and sister-in-law saw the dress. They all thought it was beautiful, but thought I would hate it

(I swore I would only wear a strapless gown). To their surprise, and mine, I loved it!

If the shoe fits: As a runner, I considered wearing my running shoes down the aisle; however, my bridal party kindly explained that I didn’t want to suggest that I was a “runaway bride.” So I opted for a comfortable pair of flats that came off directly after the ceremony. I was in my bare feet for the rest of the night, which was perfect.

The vows: We didn’t write our own vows but opted for a spin on the traditional. We found

it romantic to say the same vows thousand of others have said over the years. We did include a beautiful poem that brought everyone to tears, including us.

First dance: “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers. We chose this song for its sweet message and charm.

Kids at the wedding (Cute or chaos?): This was an easy decision for us. We value family so naturally we welcomed children of any age. The wedding was in a backyard so they had plenty of room to play! I have two little sisters, both under the age of five, who were walking down the aisle as my flower girls.

They were a hit! They danced all night and soaked up all of the attention.

Piece of cake: We strayed from the traditional large cake and opted for several smaller cakes that were some of the centerpieces. Our cake was white with fresh flowers placed on top. It was vanilla with lemon filling and buttercream frosting. All the guests walked from table to table, trying all of the different flavors of cake; it was a great way to get people to mingle!

Doing a favor: We handmade our save-thedates, invitations, programs and arranged all of the flowers so, naturally, we made our favors. Keeping with the backyard theme, we made s’mores. Each person received graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate with the message, “Sending you s’more love.” Later on in the night, we roasted our s’mores over a fire as a late-night snack.

Wedding wisdom: The most important advice we can give is simple: Remember what you are celebrating. You’re celebrating your relationship, your love and future together.

Try not to get wrapped up in the details; you won’t remember what the program said or the color of the napkins (and neither will your guests!). You will remember the happiness, love and pure bliss you felt and will continue to feel from that day on.

“I Dos”: Dec. 17, 2011. The wedding ceremony was at St. Sebastian Catholic Parish, and the reception was at the Akron Art Museum.

Favorite part: Both the ceremony and reception were special in their own way. At the altar, the culmination of emotions and realization that we made such an important commitment to one another was especially memorable. By the time the reception began, all of the day’s pressure had subsided, and we were able to celebrate the occasion with each other and all of those closest in our lives.

Tough call: [The hardest part was] choosing a venue that we felt to be unique yet would be able to comfortably accommodate our guests. We ultimately decided on the Akron Art Museum and couldn’t be happier with our choice.

Biggest hit: Everyone was thrilled with the reception venue and enjoyed viewing the galleries during cocktail hour. We were also able to celebrate in merry fashion with the local favorite, Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Christmas Ale; it’s a tradition with friends and family throughout the holidays.

Dress love: I wore a gown designed

by Vera Wang from Matina’s in Beachwood. The dress was a sleek, floorlength silk charmeuse gown with a chapellength train. For the ceremony, I wore a cathedral-length veil. Matina’s provided a wonderful experience in all aspects, including alterations.

First dance: “The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. We’re fans of the artist and thought the song’s chorus simplified our thoughts for each other.

I like to drink a red wine or sometimes a Tawny Port, which is a nice way to warm up from the snowy, cold outdoors. One of my favorite red wines is the Sebastiani Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon, and I enjoy Sandeman Tawny Porto. >>The Sebastiani Vineyards and Winery has been around since 1904 and is located just a few blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza. With over 100 years of winemaking experience, the winery focuses on crafting premium wines from the Sonoma Valley. This wine has won the best of show at the WVIZ wine tasting two years in a row.

I like the blend of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 percent Merlot, 3 percent Petit Verdot and 1 percent Syrah, all grown in the Sonoma Valley.

This blend from specific sub-appellations comes together to produce this well-balanced and complex Cabernet Sauvignon. This Bordeaux-style wine is an excellent drink to serve with marinated steaks, red sauce pasta, hamburgers or any grilled meats, and it pairs very well with chocolate. In 1811 he purchased an aging cellar in Portugal and started shipping Porto and Sherry all over Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and as far away as New Zealand. In 1877 the Sandeman brand became a registered trademark and is one of the oldest in the world.

Sandeman was also the first wine company to market and advertise its wines. Its trademark logo was created in 1928 with a design by George Brown, an artist for the Lochend Printing company. The silhouette of “The Don,” dressed like the Spanish caballeros de Jerez in a Portuguese student’s cape and wide-brimmed hat, became the first iconic logo for wine.

This Tawny Porto has fresh flavors of red fruits with just the right complexity of wood aging with an excellent finish. This Tawny Porto is excellent as a chilled aperitif, as an appetizer or at the end of a meal. It retails for $15.99.

Diesel - Sixpoint Brewery After home-brewing for years, beer enthusiast Shane Welch took his 100-plus recipes and decided to start a brewery in the most unlikely of places: an 800-square-foot garage in Brooklyn. In 2004, Sixpoint Brewery became a reality.

>> At the time, the neighborhood was not in great shape but has since seen an abundance of growth and renewal, in which the Sixpoint crew believe they’ve played a part. The brewery’s six-point star logo comes from the Middle Ages, when it was customary for brewers to brand their beer with a six-pointed star to signify purity and excellence. Today, the brewery is housed in a 16,000-square-foot building and brews 25,000 barrels a year.

Known for innovative and style-bending beers, Sixpoint strives to consistently create beers that are outside the box. The brewery focuses on constantly improving every beer with each batch and is not afraid to do things its own way.

Last year, Sixpoint transitioned to 16-ounce cans, which it calls “nanokegs.” Among its core releases are The Crisp, a pilsner; Bengali Tiger, an India Pale Ale; Righteous Ale, a rye beer; and Sweet Action, a cream ale. This past winter welcomed a double IPA called Resin and quite possibly the brewery’s most beloved brew — the dark, roasty and devilishly hoppy stout, Diesel.

Aromas of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts are present in Diesel, a seasonal release which some have called Sixpoint’s best beer. Beer aficionados could also argue that the brew is more IPA than stout — thanks to its strong hop presence. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: Diesel is one enjoyable and well-crafted brew.

Diesel is available in 4-pack 16-ounce cans for $8.99. It can be found at Acme Fresh Markets, Giant Eagle, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Heinen’s, West Point Market and other fine craft beer establishments. I like Retro Dog because it’s decorated with bright colors and lights, like an amusement park, but has higher quality food. I ordered the signature Retro Dog without the bun and ate it with a fork because the coney and cheese sauces make it so messy. I consider myself a cream soda aficionado, and the Dog’s homebrewed cream soda is very vanilla-y and not overly sweet.

Retro Dog reminds me of a “Back To The Future” movie set. I ordered the Retro Bean Burger, made of black beans, corn, brown rice and chili peppers, and topped with lettuce, tomato, shredded pickle and tasty Retro Rocket Sauce.

I’ve never ordered a bean burger in a restaurant and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. If I went back, I’d definitely order this item again.

Aquaboy tastes the Kraut Dog. I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to hot dogs. You see, I’ve been eating at least one hot dog at the turn of every golf course I’ve played over the years. Retro Dog’s hot dogs are some of the best but the kraut was mushy. Next time I’m gonna try a hot dog with the homemade Coney sauce.

The White Hot dog was okay but the basket of Veggie Fries was the showstopper: crispy, hot fries covered in cheese sauce (which was nothing special) with a side of vegetarian Coney sauce. The Coney sauce — with tomatoes, sweet onions and a touch of spice — was the perfect topping. Although the sauce was delish, I can’t bring myself to spend nearly $10 for a hot dog, fries and drink that remind me of stadium food.

Potentially the Web Guy tastes the Big Sal. I’ll be honest: When I ordered the Big Sal, I was totally expecting a honking slap of traditional Italian sausage but was pleasantly surprised to see the offering in patty form. The verdict: A healthy slice of provolone and the restaurant’s secret Retro Rocket Sauce make for one scrumptious lunch and a refreshing change from the hot dog heavy menu.

The Beekeeper’s Wife tastes the Carolina Dog. This hot dog had some texture to it and was served the only way a dog should be served: char-grilled. The bun was a little lacking for me as I would have liked it toasted. I liked the snappiness of the coleslaw which was a great counter to the spicy Coney sauce. And what’s a hot dog without yellow mustard? My mouth is watering as I relive this doggy delight.

The Spicy Vegetarian tastes the Retro Veggie Dog. I’m very picky when it comes to veggie products that pose as their meat counterpart, and veggie hotdogs are very hard to make tasty. The vegetarian chili on top was very good, and the veggie dog was spicy, which I usually like; it just didn’t work well for me and isn’t something I would get again. I love the Retro Dog concept so I’d definitely go back and try something different.

Akron Sewer Pipe Co. / Before the days of impersonal e-mails … /

In 1898, David Hill, president of Akron Sewer Pipe Co., wrote this letter to Ferris Miller of Tallmadge, in response to his request to use a clay bank as a skating rink for local boys. Hill gave his permission, saying “I trust that it will give them as much pleasure in occupying it as it does me to grant your request.”

Called “the dean of the sewer pipe industry” and “one of Akron’s most prominent men” in his 1901 obituary in the Akron Daily Democrat, Hill served on the town and school councils of Middlebury (the first settlement in what is now Akron, located east of The University of Akron), as a Summit County commissioner and as an Akron city councilman. He was also the first president of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

In 1928, David Hill Elementary School was built and named after him. The school was torn down in 2004 and replaced with the David Hill Community Learning Center in 2007.
