Hanging onto the Edges of the Flat Earth One of the major subjects from which a monthly columnist wants to steer away is the weather.

There are two reasons for this. First, the weather about which the monthly columnist is writing could very easily be just the opposite when the reader is reading about it. The second — and maybe the most important reason to not write about the weather — is that your editor will think (and in most cases, rightly so) that you have run out of ideas and need a respite from your monthly column.

But I, the aforementioned cautionaries notwithstanding, am going to talk about the weather.

I have been a weather watcher ever since I can remember. As a small boy I liked to lay on my back on a summer’s day and watch the layers of clouds trace by. To this day, as I play golf and have to wait for other players to play their shot, my eyes drift toward the sky and the clouds and weather overhead. I can attest to both the beauty that is always present and the danger that a storm front can bring. And I can attest to the changes that have happened over my lifetime.

This winter ranks right up there with the winters of ’77 and ’78 as being one of the worst I have witnessed. We not only have endured waves of deep snowfall, but also weeks of below-freezing and, on many days, below-zero temperatures. This winter season has qualified for a top ten ranking of all-time worst winters since these stats have been kept from back in the 19th century.

All of this dastardliness, and I have liked it. Yes me, the one who can’t wait to get out of the snow and cold and take a trip or two to warmer weather as winter moves into Northeast Ohio. But this winter was different. I realized that I am a bigger fan of weather than I thought. This winter I wanted to stay at home to experience the deep freeze and the bitingly cold air and piercingly clear night skies. Each wave of sub-zero temperatures is bracing and somehow comforting to those of us who have a warm place into which to escape.

My reasoning starts with the extinction of the dinosaurs due to a meteorite the size of a football field hitting the Yucatan Peninsula. The impact caused massive forest fires to emit a huge amount of smoke. Debris from the impact itself sent mile after square mile of dirt into the atmosphere causing a “Nuclear Winter” where the sun never shines. Most plants and animals that lived off the plants died and never returned. This leads me logically to believe that after 5,000 years of pumping smoke — from wood, coal, gasoline, cigarettes and all sorts of fossil-burning contraptions — into the air we breathe, we have had some effect on our weather today. Maybe a big effect. But how much is too much?

Is there anything we can do to reduce or eliminate these bad weather seasons? From forest fires and drought to floods and monsoon rains; from the sub-zero temperatures that shut down businesses to temperatures so hot they have to halt professional tennis matches? No matter, we have to try. I support government representatives who acknowledge climate change. To do otherwise is like hanging onto the edges of the flat earth.

I want to welcome William Teckmyer III to our Creative Director’s position which had been held by Kathy Baker Moorhouse since the first issue of akronlife magazine (nee Akron Life & Leisure).

Will has studied under Kathy since 2008 when he was hired as Production Manager and Artistic Director. Will is a graduate of Kent State University where he studied journalism, information design and English literature. And, since this issue features our Single in the City cover story, I want to spread the word that Will is still single. He’s also good-looking, funny, smart, and he’s got a job.

And if you compare what we are going through this winter in Northeast Ohio with the other intense and extreme weather going on around the globe recently, you begin to see something happening here.

Let me make this disclaimer: I believe in science. Science has led me to believe that the climate throughout the world is going through a dramatic change. And I think man has something to do with it.

New restaurant to open at Canal Park

The Game Grill + Bar is scheduled to open on Sat., March 22 and will occupy the South Main Street-level space below the area formerly used by Wing Warehouse and Menches Brothers. Soul Searching Back when I was single, one of my favorite inspirational authors was Iyanla Vanzant, Oprah’s buddy. Her book, “In the Meantime,” helped me get through a lot of tough times.

One of my favorite parts of the book focuses on the concept that just because you’re ready for a relationship, it doesn’t mean your soulmate is. Vanzant uses the idea of a house to represent our souls, from the messy basement where we store all our “baggage,” all the way up to the enlightened attic. While we’re waiting to find our soulmate, she says our job “in the meantime” is to maintain our spiritual house.

For me, that meant establishing a singles group with funding by a local organization, planning social events, and sitting on the floor, watching “Felicity” on TV while I put postage stamps on 125 newsletters every month. (This was before the days of Evites and Meetups.)

Of course, I had ulterior motives — to find my own soulmate — but in the meantime, I had some great adventures, made lifelong friends and, in the end, found my husbandto-be sitting right next to me on the planning committee.

Being single isn’t easy but ones we’re featuring in this month’s Single in the City cover story have thrown their hearts and souls into groups that support the greater good here in our community. They’re changing our neighborhoods for the better, finding causes to become passionate about and, in turn, living their best life. As Vanzant says, “Before you find out who you are, you have to figure out who you aren’t.”

Considering a Complicated Food Culture /

I don’t go to a lot of high-end restaurants, preferring eateries with online reviews that read, “Good prices, great food, will come back,” but on special occasions my wife and I will throw caution to the wind and visit a venue from our personal No Man’s Land of listings: The Four-Out-of-Five-Dollar-Signs places.

So that’s how we found ourselves seated at a clothcovered table in a dimly-lit room, being lectured by a kind, but insistent, waiter on the sous-vide technique of preparing New Zealand-raised venison.

“Old Yeller” while my mother, out in the front room, lectured fellow Southern women on the method of assigning points to the steaming plates of fried potato wedges featured prominently on the Sunday lunch buffets.

Food. I love it but sometimes wonder if we haven’t overcomplicated sustenance a bit. While I’m absolutely positive my ancestors held deeply-rooted opinions on the topic of venison, I suspect that, rather than touting a preparation technique that requires a pricey machine for slow cooking a specially-sealed piece of meat reared in captivity on the other side of the world, their dining philosophy boiled down to a four-step plan: Get, Cook, Eat, Live.

When faced with the hallowed rite of teenage rebellion, my path was crystal clear as a pitcher of sun tea steeping on an ivycovered porch: I would become a vegetarian, eschewing the meatloaves, ham stews and chicken casseroles that decorated the table of every social event I had attended since birth. Implausibly, without even a hint of PETAlevel indignation toward the plight of table-bound animals, I sustained a vegetarian diet for well over a decade until, one evening, woozy on a few glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon from the esteemed vintner Charles Shaw (you know, “Two Buck Chuck”), I dozed off during an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” and woke up with an insatiable desire for lamb that, days later, I quelled during a visit to Aladdin’s.

Mind you, I’m totally susceptible to all the peripheral trappings of food culture. I was raised in the long shadow of Southern religion, a Baptist upbringing where, every Sunday morning, I listened to a pastor weigh the “bread of life” against “forbidden fruits” (not to be confused with the “fruits of the spirit”), then, after a closing hymn, filed out the double doors, skipped out to the car, and my family was off to the nearest steakhouse to enjoy a lunch buffet with fellow church-goers. I also remember hours of my early life spent in back rooms of Diet Workshop meetings, reading books like 10

So I get it. I get the meat-fueled religiosity of Paleo eaters, the wild-eyed fervency of the glutenfree. I can’t judge vegans, won’t tsk eaters who say things like, “I just don’t like vegetables.” I don’t understand freegans, but I guess eating out of a dumpster is ... fine.

Our species is so flush with choices now, when every department store touts a grocery section and Whole Foods has multiple competitors in the big-box health store marketplace, that weeding through an existence in which buying macaroni-and-cheese requires extensive research and demands parameters that go beyond “good food, good price.”

I don’t like labels so much, but I say that as one who’s frequently called a “foodie” and a “locavore” — classifications I suppose I’ve earned through subscriptions to Eater newsletters and all those sagging shelves of Michael Pollan and Wendell Berry books. I have opinions about foie gras. I have a favorite chef and was genuinely excited when I finally got the chance to eat at his restaurant (not the sous-vide place).

But a year ago, when our backyard garden swelled to more than 2,000 square feet, challenging the property lines of our postagestamp-plot of suburban land and forcing my kids to play between rows of bright squash blossoms and snaky tomato vines, a friend of mine slapped a label on me I didn’t mind so much: “farmer.”

Within the course of the year between then and now, we sold our little piece of suburbia and packed our kids away to 12 acres in the country. We harvested that suburban garden, sure, but since

then we’ve also processed a flock of broiler chickens just feet from our new house and filled a freezer with the meat of two well-loved Berkshire pigs. We have two cows with a calf on the way. So yeah, I'm a farmer.

If there’s a point to this column — and you should know this is in no way a requirement my editor has given me — it’s that all of our eating habits, from the likes and dislikes we encounter at the dinner table to the ideals and philosophies that guide our hands as we reach for an item on the grocer’s shelf, are the result of personal experiences, and that each choice you or I or the guy filling his plate at the buffet restaurant make are equally valid.

I’ve seen relationships strained, friendships shuttered over militant dietary practices, and this seems as silly to me as it would be for me and my wife to demand our friends sell their homes and move to a farm.

Because, in the end, food really isn’t more complicated than Get, Cook, Eat, Live. / Rodney Wilson is a freelance writer who can still be found slumped over a laptop, writing a young adult novel and listening to Taylor Swift.

Save Our Schoolhouse / Stow group raises funds to move, restore historical building. /

About a year and a half ago, Annie Hanson, manager of continuing education and outreach at The University of Akron, got a call about a one-room schoolhouse in Stow that was about to be torn down.

Hanson, who now serves as the co-chair of Save Our Schoolhouse (S.O.S.), agreed to be part of a committee to move the Stewart School building 1/4 mile down the street and restore it to its original historical character.

It wasn’t just because this was the last remaining one-room schoolhouse in Stow — built in the 1880s — but also because her grandfather attended the school, which was on her family’s farmland.

When Stow schools were centralized in 1906, the building was used for storage, revival meetings, community dances and neighborhood get-togethers. In the 1950s and 1960s when Firestone Golf Course was being built, Green Valley Baptist Church purchased the building, moved it and converted it into a church.

“What’s amazing about the building is it’s still in remarkably good shape,” Hanson says. “We had architects come in who were able to point out where the original doors were, what type of stove it likely had, what the original windows were like.”

The building was most recently situated on Young Road on property owned by Metro Parks Serving Summit County and the land was scheduled to be used as a parking lot.

The parks system offered the building to the Stow Historical Society if the society could raise enough money.

Several months and $50,000 later, S.O.S., working with the Stow Historical Society, had enough money to move the building to Heritage Reserve Park on a rainy day last October.

“It probably took 20 minutes,” Hanson says. “One of the neat features about its new location is the original foundation stone that was holding the building up in its original place on the golf course was donated by the city of Stow, and we were able to reuse it in its new location.”

Now S.O.S. is moving on to Phases Two and Three, which include renovating the building back to its original interior and facade, and filling it with 1880s-era artifacts to be used by the community as a place to learn, gather and host meetings and speakers.

“It’s not going to be one of those things we’re just going to put in moth balls and open it once or twice a year,” says John Pribonic, S.O.S. co-chair and Stow councilman. “We’re hoping to really use this building so the community can enjoy it and learn from it at the same time.”

People from Stow and the surrounding communities have worked hard on a campaign to raise money and donate time and artifacts to complete the move and the restoration project. S.O.S. has received an original school desk, records, yearbooks and photographs from the school system, and the historical society donated a graduation dress worn by a woman in the early 1900s.

“It’s one of those efforts in which you can be young or old and participate,” Pribonic says. “It’s interesting to see how school has changed.”

Hanson says she’s amazed by the historical aspect for the school and its transitions over the years.

“I think nearly everyone in the cities of Stow and Munroe Falls has some tie to the school and to the historical perspective,” she says. “I think this is really special.”

Hanson says members of S.O.S. plan to finish the restoration and open the schoolhouse to the public this coming October.

“This isn’t just a piece of the city of Stow,” Pribonic says. “It’s important for people to see how far we’ve come and how far our education process has come. We’ve been able to find out some things about Stow that even Stow didn’t know about, and I think each little piece adds to the puzzle.” / Writer Caitlyn Callahan is a senior at KSU working on her bachelor’s in magazine journalism.

Dave Lieberth was born and raised in Akron, graduated from The University of Akron, worked in journalism and practiced law in Akron, and recently retired after 10 years as Mayor Don Plusquellic’s Chief of Staff and the Deputy Mayor of Administration. Now, he is writing to tell the nation and the world about our history-rich and technology-advancing city.

In 2009, California-based Cherbo Publishing Group Inc. approached the city of Akron with an idea for a historical book, but it was six months into the recession, the timing was poor, and no one knew where the economy was headed. Three years later, the publisher re-approached the city, and Mayor Plusquellic agreed it was the right time. Lieberth volunteered to write the book, and upon his December 2012 retirement, he began the 22,000-word manuscript.

“I was, and essentially I’ve always been, a writer and a reporter,” Lieberth says, “And those are the skills this book required. I fundamentally wanted to write a report about what the community looked like in the first decade of the 21st century.”

A self-proclaimed “history nerd” in high school, Lieberth joined the Summit County Historical Society as a teenager, which led to an officer position and the eventual presidency of the group. He did radio and other programs about Akron’s history, and he wrote speeches for the mayor and other documents about Akron’s status, its development and the performance of its institutions.

“I just had some kind of natural interest in the city’s history and where things came from,” he says.

Although Lieberth already had an abundance of knowledge about Akron and its history, more research was necessary to fully understand its innovation and technological background. The most interesting thing he learned was that in the 1950s, Goodyear Aircraft was one of the leading providers of analog computer systems in the country, and he also learned that the Telxon Corp., formerly based in Fairlawn, created some of the original wireless technology still used today.

“First of all, I wanted to do a scene-setting historical piece for each chapter, something that would identify the facts in context that the world didn’t start here in 2001 but that we had a rich history and background,” he says.

“We are an unusual place. We are not the same old Midwestern city.

We have wonderful restaurants and locally sourced food, incredible entertainment and night life, a vibrant downtown. [People] want a place that knows its history, that has its old buildings, that doesn’t look like Anytown, USA. We have some authenticity, and it’s a very creative community that’s always defined us.”

What’s next for Lieberth? He says he’d like to create a historical piece about the area, specifically in the 1920s.

“I think for future historians it’s a pretty good resource for knowing what Akron was like during this time period,” he says.

Lieberth says the audience for the book isn’t necessarily local, but national and overseas audiences. “When the city goes to recruit companies to move to Akron, they need a way to very quickly exhibit to the candidate what this community is all about,” he says.

More than 300 people attended Hattie Larlham’s 13th annual Circle of Caring Nov. 2 at the Bertram Inn & Conference Center in Aurora.

Presented by The Alpha Group, Circle of Caring is Hattie Larlham’s marquee annual fundraiser. The event successfully raised more than $204,000 to support programs and services for children and adults with developmental disabilities at Hattie Larlham.

Each year, the Circle of Caring recognizes those who have positively impacted the lives of people with developmental disabilities. At the 2013 Circle of Caring, Hattie Larlham honored University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital President Patricia DePompei, RN, MSN, and Akron Children’s Hospital President and CEO William H. March of Dimes’ 15th Annual Signature Chefs Auction The March of Dimes hosted its 15th Annual Signature Chefs Auction on Oct. 23, 2013, at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Over 200 supporters and local restaurants came together for this fundraising event to support the March of Dimes’ mission to help prevent premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality.

While sampling signature tastes and treats, guests bid on unique silent auction packages and enjoyed an upbeat live auction of imaginative dining packages offered by the participating chefs, as well as other outstanding auction items.

During the "Fund the Mission" portion of the evening, guests made taxdeductible donations directly to the organization. Leading these efforts is Ron Marhofer, the Fund the Mission chairman.

In Summit County, one in eight babies is born too soon. Prematurity is the leading cause of infant mortality, and the March of Dimes is helping to lead the efforts in the reduction of these rates.

Wes Warne (previous page) Growing up in Cambridge, Ohio, Wes Warne saw his mother participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and he often walked some laps with her in memory of his grandfather who lost a battle with lung cancer before he was born. ”I’ve always been a fan of the Relay for Life,” the 25-year-old says. “My mom taught me that it’s important to take the time to do your part.”

Today, living in North Canton and serving as a Senior Business Development Specialist with the Canton Charge, Warne is proud to work for a company that understands its role in community involvement.

“Our players, dance team and whole front office staff get out on a regular basis to do work like serving meals at shelters, hospital visits, food drives and fitness clinics,” he says.

“We’re also very involved with the United Way. The team is always excited for the opportunity to pitch in on some community service during the Day of Caring. Last year, we spent the day planting flower bulbs and painting playground equipment, which makes for some great team bonding.”

In my spare time, I like to: Spend my lunchtime at the gym and my evenings mountain biking and trying to golf, when the weather allows / Favorite local hangout: Loby’s / I’m a sucker for: Dogs. I’m the kind of person that will say hello to the dog with its head out the window in the car next to me at a stoplight / Most people don’t know I: Am a fan of Pixar movies.

I never have a problem with watching a movie with my nieces when I’m home, and yes, I do own “Despicable Me” on DVD / The craziest thing I ever did: Was being named ‘Most Daring’ and ‘Biggest Threat to Pedestrians’ in high school / My idea of a great date: A bike ride on the Towpath is a great way to spend some time together.

A nice conversation over dinner and wine is always a good time as well, but any date can be a great one if you’re going with the right person.

Emilia Sykes If the Sykes family name sounds familiar, it’s because 28-year-old Emilia is the daughter of Vernon and Barbara Sykes, both of whom have represented the 34th District in the Ohio House of Representatives since 1983. Their youngest daughter has launched her campaign to take over her father’s seat, which will become available due to term limits.

A licensed attorney with a master’s degree in Public Health, Sykes is the Administrative Staff Advisor for the Summit County Fiscal Office.

She says she’s best described by the book, “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandburg and, in particular, the chapter titled, “Sit at the Table.”

“I’ve always wanted to position myself in a place where I can really help people and make a positive impact in my community,” she says.

“I can’t do that unless I’m sitting at the table where decisions are being made.”

Sykes has volunteered at Sarah’s House food pantry and with Community Legal Aid Services’ HEAL program, a medical-legal partnership with Summa Women’s Health Center.

“It’s really a great collaboration that deserves much more attention than it currently receives,” she says. “I was happy to be a part of it.”

Samantha Coldwell When you’re talking to Cuyahoga Falls’ Samantha Coldwell, she looks you in the eye and pays attention — a trait she says is part of her charm. “I’m a great listener and very open minded, which makes for easy conversation,” she says.

The 31-year-old is a Marketing Management teacher at Barberton High School as well as a member of Torchbearers, and her passion is local causes. “I like making a difference in my community and giving back to the world that directly surrounds me,” she says.

Coldwell serves on the planning committee of the Halloween Charity Ball in Akron, which supports two local charities each year.

“I love being part of such an amazing event,” she says. “This year we chose Akron Rotary Camp and Victim Assistance Program. We are very excited to raise this money for them and get involved in their causes.”

She says the song that best describes her is “Dreams” by The Cranberries, especially the lyrics: “Oh, my life is changing every day, in every possible way.”

“It’s a song about remaining optimistic,” she says. “I try to view changes in life as opportunities. I love meeting new people, visiting new places and trying new things.”

In my spare time, I like to: Run or bike the Towpath and hike the Metro Parks. During the winter I am yoga-ing (I’ve decided it’s a word) at Yoga Bliss studio / I love living in this area because: I have a large extended family that I’m close with, and many of them are here. Plus, Akron is a great city with much to do. It bugs me that the city is underestimated at times. The culture, the arts and the parks are amazing / Favorite local hangout: Luigi’s for its pizza and salad; Baxter’s after work; and Portage Lakes during the summer / My guilty pleasure: Pedicures / Pet peeve: Spelling mistakes / Most people don’t know I: Backpacked through Australia when I was 20 / The craziest thing I ever did: Lived and worked in the Greek Islands in my early 20s / My idea of a great date: Good wine, great conversation and a comfortable atmosphere.

Amber Genet Amber Genet wants to be the girl in a Bon Jovi song and identifies most with the song, “It’s My Life.” “I try not to be a face in the crowd, but stand up and live my life,” she says. “And in the end, I want to say I did it ‘my way.’”

This 29-year-old corporate event planner at Westfield Insurance realized after college that she was missing the camaraderie of peers going through similar struggles in finding a career.

Then, she discovered Torchbearers, a group of young professionals who were also interested in the same community service, education and social opportunities. Not long after that, she joined the Downtown Akron Partnership Emerging Leaders and now serves as the group’s president.

“The connectivity I’ve gained from my groups is, by far, my favorite benefit and outweighs the sometimes overwhelming time commitments,” Genet says.

“I’ve made lifelong friends, and while we move on to different groups or start new ones, we have a deep understanding of the importance of service to our community. I know that this is something I want to continue throughout my life.”

I love living in this area because: I’m constantly going places that are new to me. When people live in this area, we take for granted all of the wonderful things around us / Favorite local hangout: I’m having a love affair with craft beers. I enjoy beer spots like Baxter’s, The Lockview and the new Lizardville. In the summer I must attend the Blues & Brews event at Lock 3 / Pet peeve: When people touch their eyes! It totally grosses me out, even when it has to do with contacts. / I’m a sucker for: Good manners and charisma. When someone is polite and has good manners, it speaks to them as a person but also to their appreciation of the people and world around them. For me, it’s also about more than opening doors and not talking with your mouth full. It’s about being on time, good to your word and respectful.

Paul Charles LaGuardia Paul LaGuardia is a first-year member of Akron’s Torchbearers but, like many young professionals, he’s still searching for that one cause to direct his passions.

“By aligning myself with a great organization, it provides me the opportunity to get involved in many different areas in the community,” he says. “As I continue 38

to get involved, I hope to find my niche.”

The 30-year-old sales manager/ project manager for Diamond Communications LLC — and a former member of The University of Akron’s soccer team — lives in the Portage Lakes and takes time to coach a team of 4- to 7-yearolds as part of the Manchester

Youth Soccer Association.

“When many of the other coaches focused on victories, we focused on having the absolutely best time possible,” he says.

“When the kids from other teams were begging their coach to go into the game, my kids were begging to come out of the game and hangout with ‘Coach’ on the side-

line. We won approximately one game in three seasons but, more importantly, we were undefeated in snacks after the game.”

In my spare time, I like to: Go to the gym, golf, check out great restaurants and go to Browns games / My guilty pleasure: Absolut and soda with a lime / Pet peeve: Steelers fans. Unfortunately we actually have a couple in my immediate family,

It’s barely 6 o’clock on a cold, Saturday night and already the line spills out the front door and down the sidewalk. Teenagers in high school letter jackets and families with kids in tow come expecting the wait. Hipsters rub shoulders with empty nesters in the crowded lobby of the place that’s weathered decades of change without revamping its menu or redesigning its décor.

If pizza is your comfort food, then Akron’s Luigi’s is your surrogate Italian mother. You can count on her for fresh baked bread, a mountain of mozzarella on top of your salad and a thick, crispy-edged pizza with just the right ratio of ingredients to sauce.

And you can count on her to treasure your hometown memories – even when preserving them takes way more time and effort than you may have ever imagined.

That’s why it mattered to owner Tony Ciriello when the bandbox above the entrance (that some people don’t even notice) started acting up last year. When it finally quit working eight months ago, Tony wasn’t sure how much time or money he’d have to invest to get it moving again.

The restaurant’s electrician, Butch Pastik, did the rewiring and a repairman at an old jukebox warehouse in Cleveland got the mechanical parts working again. Then Mickey and some friends began looking for characters to replace the old foam band members – brittle and crumbling from dry rot.

Superman and Barbie

After discovering that Ken dolls and GI Joes didn’t work in the bandbox, Mickey settled on some 8-inch action figure Superman dolls.

They were just the right size, and their arms were flexible enough to be posed with the musical instruments. Then he decided to swap out the male lead singer for a more glamorous blond Barbie.

Like everything at Luigi’s, the mechanical bandbox has a history. You can see it in a 1951 picture of the restaurant on the celebrity photo wall in the main dining room.

Tony was just a kid in the ‘70s when his uncle Mickey Ciriello rescued the broken-down band from storage. Even then, coin-operated bandboxes – that gave customers something fun to watch when the jukebox was playing – became relics. They were rarities that few people cared about or knew how to refurbish.

Mickey hired a local seamstress to create tuxedos for the band and created mop-top wigs for their heads. He replaced worn-out rubber bands with metal springs to keep the various parts moving and cut a piece from a roll-up (Continued on page 42)

The Funky Connection After being introduced to Luigi’s as a good place to eat after midnight, Medina artist Tom Batiuk, creator of the comic strip “Funky Winkerbean,” says he took his young son Brian there to see the jukebox. It soon became a regular stop on their guys’ night out.

The timing of those early visits in the ‘90s coincided with Batiuk’s plan to restage his comic strip by allowing his characters to start growing up in real

time. As part of that reboot, Batiuk gave his main character, Funky, a job delivering pizzas for Montoni’s Italian restaurant. Montoni’s, with visual inspiration from Luigi’s, has been a backdrop for Batiuk’s adult characters ever since.

Then last fall, the strip mentioned that Montoni’s bandbox was out for repairs, joking that maybe the band had retired.

It wasn’t until visiting Luigi’s that Batiuk discovered the uncanny timeliness of that

strip — created nearly a year in advance of publication.

Batiuk made an enlargement of the panels referencing Montoni’s bandbox refurbishing, and Tony placed it above the entrance of Luigi’s to let customers know his bandbox wasn’t gone for good.

snow sled to cover the missing red plastic facing below the stage floor. That first reclamation took seven years to complete.

Painstaking restoration Tony called jukebox companies, electricians and even a car alarm guy but no one had the background or expertise to tackle the project.

Then one day last summer, a customer dropped off a phone number for Keith Miller, a local man who’s been collecting and restoring coin-operated pinball machines, slots, vintage soda dispensers, jukeboxes and gumball machines since the early ‘80s. Tony didn’t know who provided Miller’s number. Still, he made the call. Coincidentally, Miller lives just minutes from Tony’s house in the Portage Lakes.

“He’s worked with people all over the country on this stuff,” Tony says, amazed to find the expert he was looking for right in his own backyard. “In the first five minutes of talking with Keith, I knew this is the guy I’d trust to repair and restore my bandbox.”

Miller rewired the bandbox according to its original specifications – in some cases undoing what was done on the fly in the ‘70s. He painstakingly cleaned and restored anything that could be salvaged and replaced everything that couldn’t with the goal of making the bandbox look and perform like new.

He spent about 100 hours over four months on the project, returning it to Luigi’s in time for Christmas.

One of a kind Only a couple thousand Chicago Coin Co. bandboxes were produced, and of the few that remain, almost all are in private collections, Miller says.

Luigi’s bandbox is the only one he’s ever seen with a cymbal and an NBC microphone.

Today, reproductions of the band members are available in more long-lasting foam construction. Tony bought a full set in case he needs them in the future.

For now, a new Barbie doll has replaced the ‘70s lead singer, but the male band members from the first restoration live on. One has been wearing a Superman suit under his tuxedo for all these years.

In the tradition of protecting Clark Kent’s real identity, Tony won’t say which one is the true Man of Steel.

Retirement Planning / Nearing Retirement? /

Most people have an ideal retirement age in their head. Perhaps you hope to retire early and travel the world, or stop working right at age 65 – for years, the traditional retirement age. Or maybe you’re nearing your 60s, or even your 70s, with no desire to slow down.

Be sure you know how much you can expect from Social Security. Knowing the amount of your benefits is essential if you’re planning to rely on them during retirement. Remember: You can start receiving Social Security benefits at age 62, but you’ll receive more money each month if you wait until your U.S. government-deemed full retirement age. Your benefits will continue to increase the longer you wait to file, up until age 70.

Am I On Track?

Essentially, the decision when to retire is yours. And it’s one you should consider carefully and base on a number of factors, such as your retirement savings, when you’ll begin collecting Social Security, your plans for retirement, and your health.

Do I Have Enough Money?

Whether you’ve been stashing away money since the beginning of your career, or started a retirement fund a little later than you intended, you’re likely wondering if you have enough savings to stop working. Financial experts estimate that you’ll need between 70 and 80 percent of your pre-retirement income to maintain your standard of living. Yes, less than 100 percent, because hopefully you’ve paid off your mortgage and other installment loans, aren’t carrying a heavy load of credit card debt, and no longer have costs associated with children, such as childcare or college tuition. Plus, you’ll no longer be saving for retirement.

To determine your post-retirement income, you may want to start with a thorough examination of all the resources you’re planning to use during retirement. These might include a combination of funds from Social Security, your pension, a 401(k), an IRA, mutual funds, stocks and bonds, annuities and savings accounts. w w w. akronlife.com

Now that you’re aware of your resources, calculate your retirement income to see if you’re on track. If you’re unhappy with the results, you can try making some small changes to boost your retirement savings these last few years, such as increasing your savings as much as you can, making sure you’re contributing enough to your employer-sponsored plan to receive the full match, and contributing the maximum to your IRA. Remember, you can make “catch-up” contributions if you’re over 50, which are additional contributions to your IRA. You may also consider tightening your budget to increase your savings. At the same time, to make your post-retirement budget lower, work to pay off credit card debt and your mortgage.

Should I Reevaluate My Investments?

Now may be a good time to conduct an asset allocation analysis to compare how your assets are invested in stocks, bonds, and cash. Since you’re nearing retirement, you need to consider the risk of your portfolios. You may want to seek a combination of investments that are more conservative because you have a shorter time frame to compensate for the inevitable fluctuations of the market.

You also might consider investing part of your retirement savings into an annuity. Annuities are often offered by insurance companies, which make a series of payments to you in exchange for a single premium or series of premiums. These payments can continue for a defined length of time or an indefinite period, such as your lifetime. Deferred annuities begin at a set time in the future and help you accumulate money for future use.

Should I Readjust My Plan?

If you fear that the amount in your retirement fund won’t be enough to get you through the rest of your life, you may want to adjust your timeline. Extracurricular Activities / Helping your children occupy their free time /

There comes a time when parents realize it’s better for their children to participate in an extracurricular activity than to stay cooped up in the house.

“Families should determine these conditions ahead of time, and even come up with a list of criteria regarding commitment levels,” she says.

Summer camps and other summer activities are a great way for children to try programs that may provide unique opportunities. Once they’ve sampled a particular program, they can decide if they want to participate in the activity for the long term.

Kraus says parents shouldn’t be discouraged if their children start a program and then choose to leave.

“A child realizing that he wants to quit (an activity) can be a good thing, in that making effective personal decisions is a needed life skill,” she says. “Developing a way to sift through the decision-making process together can be beneficial in helping a child learn the importance of balance.”

Sophia Kraus, interim director of The University of Akron Center for Child Development, associate clinical instructor, and director of the child care laboratory school, says the age to get children involved in extracurricular activities depends on the individual child, his personality and temperament, as well as his parents’ values and goals.

“Some children, at a very young age, may show a unique interest or talent that can be fostered through extracurricular activities,” Kraus says.

“With a young child, the parent may look for opportunities that align best with what they know about their own child. Older children would benefit from being a part of the decision-making process.”

No matter the age, Kraus says extracurricular activities are important for children’s development and learning.

“Extracurricular activities can offer creative outlets not available in traditional academic settings,” she says. “Children learn how to get along with others and truly experience the development of important social and emotional skills.

“These are opportunities for children to experience a bit of the ‘real’ world and develop their personalities by seeing their own potential. This can be a powerful motivator in life and give children self-esteem and coping skills.”

Before deciding on a specific activity for their children, Kraus recommends that parents research available options, talk with other parents and connect with local resources. Parents also need to discuss the parameters of the activities such as cost, time frame, how many activities their children can participate in, and the commitment level.

But, Kraus says, because extracurricular activities are necessary for development, if children are hesitant to get involved, it’s important for parents to find out why.

“If a child is shy, a large group setting isn’t going to cure the shyness,” she says. “There may be a way to work through the child’s hesitation by partnering him up with a friend or finding a smaller setting. If a child is unsure about his own skill level, he may avoid trying the activity. A parent can help build the child’s skill level up first.

“Also, the activity may not be for everyone. In time, children’s interests may change. Just keep opportunities open.”

Kraus says popular activities today include ones related to the arts such as music and drama, as well as the STEM areas of science, technology, engineering and math, especially because children love sensory and exploratory activities.

Parents should keep in mind that helping their children choose an extracurricular activity doesn’t have to be a decision made overnight, but rather a thoughtful choice.

A New Leader In late 2013, Summit DD’s board selected John Trunk to lead the agency into a new and exciting era. Trunk brings many years of experience and innovative ideas with him. He’s committed to building relationships and creating new collaborations with partners that will continue to propel the agency forward in 2014.

A New Definition of Community Kids are kids! That belief is why the agency strives to ensure that Summit County’s youngest citizens and their families have the tools they need to succeed in their communities. Through Early Intervention services, community inclusion programs and school-age support, Summit DD works with families to build supports that are flexible yet customized to each family.

Summit DD is also there to support community programs and child care centers through the agency’s Community Partnership for Inclusion (CPI) program. Through this program, Summit DD staff provides inclusion training to organizations in the community which ultimately increases inclusive opportunities for all children, with or without disabilities.

“Our staff is able to offer strategies, training, equipment and other adaptations which ensure the success of inclusive experiences,” says Holly Brugh, director of Children’s Services at Summit DD. To date, the CPI program supports 26 privately run child care centers and has trained 475 child care professionals in Summit County.

Support doesn’t stop with infants and preschoolers. School-age children sometimes need a little extra support too. From assistance with Individualized Education Plans, or IEPs, to summer camps, Summit DD is available to help.

A New Inclusive Workforce From birth through adulthood, Summit DD believes that the best supports are created when people are empowered to work toward goals they set for themselves, and for many adults, dreams include employment. The agency offers a variety of supports to help make informed choices about community employment, uncover vocational talents and participate in integrated, community employment. Summit DD connects people to the individualized supports they seek.

A person-centered approach provides adults in center-based environments the opportunity to learn and practice self-advocacy, as well as make informed choices about their lives, including decisions about employment.

Individuals who are able to and want to work in the community have the opportunity to work toward discovering their interests and talents to gain community employment.

The agency also offers job exploration supports for youth during transitional years. This allows teens to uncover interests, as well as identify and develop skills needed for community employment after graduation. Last year 65 teens participated in job exploration through Summit DD-funded programs, uncovering vocational ambitions and preparing them for future employment.

For Oberon Wines, they select classic Bordeaux varietal grapes from the selective appellations of Oakville, Rutherford and Stag’s Leap District.

Because the Napa Valley is a box canyon with Mount St. Helena at the northern end and the southern end open, this traps the cooling moisture and layers of fog lines from the San Francisco bay.
