Did you notice our new name when you picked up this issue of Akron Community Foundation’s magazine? That’s right: “The Signal” is now “Foundations.”

You may remember that earlier this year, the foundation made a significant multi-year commitment to fund a new nonprofit newsroom for our Greater Akron community called Signal Akron. This newsroom is part of a larger network of nonprofit newsrooms known as Signal Ohio, which also operates the Signal Cleveland newsroom that launched about a year ago and plans to start newsrooms in other communities throughout the state.

What can we say? “Signal” is a great name; we get why they chose it.

But with this necessary and exciting news venture of course came the need for the community foundation to rebrand The Signal magazine to avoid confusion.

Within its pages, “Foundations” tells the stories of individuals, organizations and movements that are dedicated to building a stronger community, like our Black Giving Collective Fund, which you can read about on page 8.

Much of the content you already enjoy in our magazine is still here – stories about critical challenges and the organizations working to address them, about our donors and their charitable passions – but with a fresh approach and a focus on more impactful and informative content.

This isn’t the only change we’ve made recently. This past summer, our board finalized an updated vision, mission and values statement that simplifies and better captures the heart of our work. I truly believe that “we are our community’s champion and generator of enduring philanthropy.” You’ll see these captured below.

FROM THE COMMUNITY Akron Community Foundation helped our mom-and-pop shop stay afloat all through the pandemic. When most food pantries shut down, we remained open! Through rain, hail, sleet and COVID-19, the food must go to feed all people. Now we are in 2023 and facing a worldwide food insecurity crisis, and once again, ACF has stepped up to fund our organization to make sure no family is left behind. Mother Teresa said if you can’t feed one hundred, then feed just one. Because of ACF funding, in 2023-2024 we can feed over 70,000 meals and distribute 83,000 pounds of food and fresh fruit and vegetables in the North Hill (44310) area and surrounding communities.

Holly Harris Bane Women’s Endowment Fund Advisory Board Member Cristina (González Alcalá), thank you for helping us with the grant for 2023. After we received the grant, we got a phone call from Ohio.com, and one of the reporters wrote an article about all the great things

happening to Popeye’s Boxing Gym and Fitness Center. The next thing we knew, we were asked to come meet with the LeBron James Family Foundation at the I Promise School.

That meeting led us to move to 533 West Market Street across from the new House Three Thirty. In August, we will be taking on additional classes for the LJFF students, teachers and staff. While all of this transpired, we started receiving requests from firefighters, police and health care workers for training.

All of this would not have been possible if you hadn’t helped us.

Craig Haines Popeye’s Boxing Gym and Fitness Center Thank you for your Millennium Fund grant in support of the United Way of Portage County Literacy Kit program. The kits include a book and a hands-on activity and are given to kindergarteners and Head Start students each year. Since the program began in 2015, we have given out 7,384 kits in Portage County.

FOUNDATION Longtime Staff Member Promoted Congratulations to Laura Lederer, who was recently promoted to vice president and chief development officer at Akron Community Foundation after more than 12 years of service to the organization.

During her tenure at the foundation, Laura has been instrumental in garnering new fund and donor relationships, as well as building our Professional Advisor Council. She currently serves as the president of Northern Ohio Charitable Gift Planners. Laura’s promotion follows the departure of Margaret Medzie, who served in this role for more than a decade, during a time of significant growth in both contributions and new funds. We’re grateful for Margaret’s leadership of our development and donor engagement team and thrilled for Laura’s well-deserved new role.

ACF Welcomes New Staff Member We’re excited to welcome Mariana C. S. Silva, who joined the community foundation’s staff in late September as our community investment specialist. In this role, Mariana assists in cultivating and maintaining relationships with grant seekers, grantees, donor-advised fundholders, and other internal and external partners by providing guidance on the foundation’s community investment processes.

She also works closely with our Center for Family Philanthropy to match charitable families with needs in the community. Mariana earned an MBA in marketing and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kent State University. She most recently served as a marketing specialist and content writer for America SCORES Cleveland and as the associate director of donor engagement at the National Inventors Hall of Fame. $7.2 Million in Grants Awarded Over the past six months, Akron Community Foundation has distributed $7.2 million in grants back into the community, including through our board discretionary grant cycles, which have distributed nearly

$1.3 million combined for both arts and culture and civic affairs programming. Additionally, we announced nearly $200,000 in grants to support local food pantries in ZIP codes with the highest food insecurity rates, as well as nearly $450,000 in grants from the Summit County Opioid Healing Fund, which was created by the County of Summit to provide funding to organizations working to combat addiction. Three Community Leaders Join ACF’s Board Akron Community Foundation recently welcomed Mark Bachmann, Laura Culp and Tracy Dowe to its board of directors.

Mark Bachmann is a partner at Marcus Thomas, where he provides senior counsel to the integrated advertising agency. In addition to serving on the Akron Community Foundation board, Mark is a member of the 4A’s (American Association of Advertising Agencies) National Board of Directors and is a passionate board member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio and the Jesuit Retreat Center. He has joined the Community Relations Committee.

Laura Culp is a partner at Sikich, where she helps the owners of privately held businesses grow their wealth and implement tax savings. Laura also serves on the boards of GAR Foundation, Corbin Foundation and Cleveland Clinic Akron General. She will serve on the Community Investment Committee.

Tracy Dowe is the city president and middle market team leader for Fifth Third Bank, where he oversees the Akron, Canton and Youngstown markets. He also serves on the boards of the Akron Art Museum, Business Volunteers Unlimited and the Development Finance Authority of Summit County. Tracy has joined both the Community Investment and Governance committees.

Housing, Mental Health and Public Safety Top Issues in Needs Assessment In partnership with The Center for Community Solutions, Akron Community Foundation recently completed an assessment of pressing needs facing our community, with housing, mental health and public safety emerging as the top issues in Summit County. The information gleaned from this assessment will help drive the foundation’s proactive grantmaking, educational opportunities and other initiatives. When it comes to wealth in the United States, the numbers are clear: The typical net worth of white families is nearly 10 times that of Black families.

And though Black individuals give a higher portion of their income to charity compared to white individuals, when it comes to philanthropic wealth, such as endowment funds, disparities also loom large.

“When I chaired the foundation’s Women’s Endowment Fund, I saw firsthand what endowments can do for a community,” said Tracy Carter, Akron Community Foundation board member. The Women’s Endowment Fund, which started in 1993 with $106,000, has since grown to $4.4 million – while also contributing nearly $2.1 million to nonprofits serving women and girls.

When Akron Community Foundation began creating its current strategic plan, which included a continued focus on diversity, equity 4 8

and inclusion, an idea began to form. “Our Black community deserves to benefit from this long-term approach, too,” said Carter.

She and community foundation staff began discussing potential next steps with other key members of the board, including Theresa Carter, Carla Chapman, Bennett Gaines and Dr. Rachel Talton, as well as then-president of the Women’s Endowment Fund, Kendra Philon. And so, the inaugural Black Giving Collective committee was born.

“Even though we all felt strongly that this would be a great opportunity for our community, we knew we needed to do some serious listening first,” said Carter. “The Black community often feels disenfranchised with financial institutions – even charitable ones – so we needed to hear and understand their concerns and requests before we moved forward with our planning process.”

philanthropy Over an eight-month period, the committee met with nearly 150 Black individuals and received candid feedback that will help the foundation build better trust within the Black community and shape a fund with the participants’ feedback in mind.

Overwhelmingly, though, the committee heard that a collective giving opportunity, specifically created by Black individuals and allies to benefit the Black community here in Greater Akron, is indeed needed.

On Aug. 28, 2023, rounding out Black Philanthropy Month, the Black Giving Collective committee and Akron Community Foundation staff members announced the official creation of the Black Giving Collective Fund. It was established with an initial $50,000 gift from Akron Community Foundation and a $50,000 match if the fund can raise that amount by March 31, 2024.

In November 2025, Akron will welcome “The Soul of Philanthropy,” a national touring artistic exhibit that showcases the often untold story of the history of Black philanthropy.

“Providing the seed money to start this affiliate fund was a first for the foundation.

Our other eight affiliate funds have been established exclusively with money from the donors who created them,” said John T. Petures Jr., president and CEO of Akron Community Foundation. “And while this fund is being shaped by our passionate board members and the new advisory board members they identify, we felt compelled to make a substantial contribution because this fund is long overdue.”

The exhibit, inspired by the book “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists” by Valaida Fullwood, includes photography, poetry and prose to weave vivid stories and reveal the long and unsung legacy of Black philanthropists. These are the stories of all philanthropists – from generous donors of significant wealth to those who had little financial resources but still found ways to give significantly to charitable causes.

endowment The purpose of an endowment fund is to ensure you will be able to support the causes you care about… forever! Charitable gifts donated to Akron Community Foundation – such as through the Black Giving Collective Fund – are invested and grown over time, with a portion of the dollars available to grant out to nonprofits in the community every year. So, what could this mean for the fund 10 or 25 years down the road? The balance of a $1 million fund after 10 years (with no additional gifts made to it) would exceed $1.3 million – while also giving away nearly $430,000 over that decade. After 25 years, the fund will have given away more than its original value and have grown to more than double its initial balance.

AFFILIATE FU Bath Community Fund In August, Bath Community Fund supporters gathered at the Regal Beagle pavilion in the Bath Nature Preserve to celebrate the fund’s impact in the community and to look ahead to the fund’s 10th anniversary in 2024. During the annual meeting, fund leaders recognized founding board members Jody Konstand and Nancy Fay for their years of dedicated service to Bath Community Fund. Also honored for her leadership was outgoing board chair Kathy Sidaway, who closed the evening by introducing the fund’s new executive committee members, including the Rev. Mark Frey as the new board chair.

Bath Community Fund recently announced $50,000 in grants for 2023, bringing the fund’s total grantmaking to more than $250,000 since it was created in 2014. See all the recipients at akroncf.org/ BCFgrants.

Gay Community Endowment Fund In June, the fund held its annual exhALE celebration to benefit the GCEF Scholarship Fund, which awards academic scholarships to LGBTQ+ and allied students. In early December, the fund hosted its annual Sugar Plum Tour of Holiday Homes. The Gay Community Endowment Fund will award its next round of grants this winter. Strong preference will be given to programs that create safer environments for LGBTQ+ youth, combat phobias of the LGBTQ+ community, and support mental health and suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ+ people. Applications for both impact grants and micro grants are due Dec. 15.

Green Community Fund This fall, members of the Green Community Fund Steering Committee hosted a series of informational gatherings to share the vision and purpose of this new fund and to discuss how a collective giving effort could benefit the Green community. Guests learned about growing needs in the city, as well as plans to provide a permanent source of funding for the more than 230 nonprofit organizations located in Green. Millennium Fund for Children A partnership between Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Beacon Journal/ Beaconjournal.com, the Millennium Fund for Children enriches the lives of children throughout the newspaper’s audience coverage area. Since 1999, the fund has grown to $1.2 million and invested nearly $950,000 into local children’s causes. Gifts from individuals and corporations alike help fuel this growth, including the nearly $40,000 in gifts made last year. See the full list of donors at akroncf. org/MillenniumDonors.

Vernon L. Odom Fund As president of the Akron Urban League for nearly 30 years, Vernon Odom spent much of his career improving communities of color through education, advocacy and mentoring. Since 1993, the Vernon L. Odom Fund has continued his legacy by investing nearly $225,000 into local programs that promote diversity and support ethnic and racial harmony.

Women’s Endowment Fund The Women’s Endowment Fund officially celebrated its 30th anniversary on Nov. 3, 2023. The first 30 years of the fund’s history will be preserved in a special timeline exhibit at akroncf.org/WEFtimeline.

Earlier this year, the Women’s Endowment Fund welcomed guests to its annual Circle of Empowerment gathering at House Three Thirty. To date, the circle has grown to 112 members who collectively contribute nearly $160,000 to the fund annually. Learn more about joining the Circle of Empowerment at akroncf.org/ WEFCOE. In September, the fund hosted its biennial Forum on Women and Girls. This year’s topic was “Women, Work & Wealth Creation.” Results from the forum will be available online later this year and will help to inform the Women’s Endowment Fund’s future grantmaking.

FORGING NEW paths

Born during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and named after the city at its very epicenter, it seems Selma Theresa Carter was all but destined to be a progressive and inspirational leader.

Theresa, our 54th recipient of the Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award, has led a life of success formed by forging new paths at every turn.

It’s a journey that’s taken her from the Deep South to Northeast Ohio, where she’s overseen some of the most significant contributions from corporate philanthropy in the area.

Though Theresa was born at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, the most significant town in Theresa’s upbringing was 12

600 miles south: Demopolis, Alabama, where Jim Crow laws were enforced right up until the 1970s and where her grandmother Madeline was the first African American to serve white customers at the town’s only department store.

Theresa’s mother, Clarissa, moved Theresa and her siblings back home to Demopolis when she was just a few years old, making it her true hometown. There, Theresa joined 4-H, but rather than working with animals, she leveraged this experience to develop skills as a public speaker, taking home ribbons for her accomplishments. She also became Demopolis Junior High School’s first Black cheerleader, along with being elected “Miss Demopolis Junior High School.” And she continued this

path into high school, becoming the first Black student to be elected president of the student council.

As class president, Theresa led a fundraising campaign to rent out the Demopolis Community Center for the students’ first integrated prom in 1979, taking her own initiative despite the doubt and prohibition from the school principal. Every year since, the tradition of having one prom for all students has continued at Demopolis High School, thanks to the efforts of Theresa and her classmates.

Though Alabama was home, Theresa’s connection to Northeast Ohio began during her teenage years, when Theresa and her sisters would spend their summers in Akron visiting their aunt. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in communications and a completed internship at a Selma TV station, Theresa moved to Akron, where she met her sister’s friend from church, who helped her move her furniture.

That serendipitous meeting led to marriage for Theresa and Garvin Carter in 1986, followed by the birth of their daughters, Erin and Cesily. Though their marriage did not last, their friendship did, and they continue to celebrate family events and cherish their time as grandparents to their grandson, Devon.

While Theresa initially moved to Akron to find work in broadcasting, a temporary gig from a secretarial pool at the General Tire &

Rubber Company blossomed into a fruitful career, including working in corporate communications, editing the company magazine, and eventually managing grant distributions to the 27 communities where General Tire had a presence.

Throughout General Tire’s transition to GenCorp and an acquisition by OMNOVA Solutions, which eventually became Synthomer, Theresa’s titles included executive director of the GenCorp Foundation and president of the OMNOVA Solutions Foundation. Her current position is president of Synthomer Foundation, which has assets of more than $30 million.

Over the last 32 years, Theresa has led the distribution of more than $50 million to charitable groups, arts and culture organizations, and civic projects.

Her work in Northeast Ohio has had a major impact on corporate philanthropy, but she’s also dedicated her time to serving on the boards of numerous organizations, including Akron Community Foundation, the Akron Urban League, Akron NAACP, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, and the Summit Metro Parks Board of Park Commissioners, just to name a few.

Theresa has been an integral part of the Sojourner Truth Project Committee, which was responsible for the creation of a statue and

legacy plaza dedicated to the abolitionist and civil and women’s rights activist near the site of her most famous speech, often referred to as “Ain’t I A Woman?”

But while Theresa’s been busy making an impact on a large scale, she’s also devoted her time to serving at the individual level. Whether she’s tutoring children through Project GRAD or mentoring young professionals, Theresa is always willing to make time for others.

For all of these accomplishments and more, Theresa was honored with the Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award, which she received on Nov. 6 in front of more than 450 family members, friends and community leaders.

The Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award was created in 1969 to honor the late Bert Polsky, president of the former Polsky’s Department Store and founding trustee of Akron Community Foundation. Each year, the community foundation presents the Polsky Humanitarian Award to the individual or couple who best exemplifies Bert Polsky’s selfless dedication to humanitarian causes in Akron. Honorees come from a variety of backgrounds, from business executives to lifelong volunteers.

AMPLIFY YOUR IMPACT WITH A GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE

It was a light-bulb moment the first time CBIZ Managing Director Naomi Ganoe learned about the benefits of gifting a life insurance policy to charity. As someone with a longtime passion for giving back to the causes she cares about, Naomi was drawn to the simplicity and effectiveness of this giving vehicle. “After seeing the illustrations, I realized that life insurance is one of those easy ways to make a significant gift,” she said.

“It made a lot of sense to me.”

Naomi soon put that strategy into action and secured life insurance policies that will benefit two of her favorite charities. One policy will support behavioral health at Summa Health, and the other will benefit her donor-advised fund at Akron Community Foundation.

“I’m at that age where I’m young enough and healthy enough to qualify for a new policy,” she said. “I’m also at the point in my career where I appreciate the charitable deduction I receive for the premiums.”

By naming Akron Community Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of the new policy, Naomi is able to make tax-deductible gifts to the foundation to pay the premiums. After her lifetime, Naomi’s donor-advised fund will receive the full amount of the insurance benefit, and her daughter, Cassie, will be able to follow Naomi’s example and continue both of their legacies of giving by making grants from the fund to charities they both care about. “I get a tax write-off now for something my daughter will be able to give away later,” Naomi said.

Naomi’s decision to name her donor-advised fund as the beneficiary of the gift allows Naomi to continue to pass her charitable values on to her daughter while retaining the flexibility to support a variety of causes in the future if interests or community needs change.

In addition, Naomi was able to structure the policy so it would be paid in full by the time she turns 60, ensuring that she won’t have to worry about paying the premiums during retirement. “If I retire or go part time, I would prefer not to have the premium expense, so we crafted the policy to fit my needs and my situation,” she said.

Naomi noted that some donors may also choose to pay for their policy with a single lump-sum gift. This can be an ideal option for someone with a recent liquidity event or high-income year. Depending on the person’s health, it’s possible to secure a high-value policy for a relatively low upfront cost, thereby amplifying the power of their gift.

The question to ask, said Naomi, is: “Would you be willing to part with $50,000 now for a potential $250,000 charitable impact? Everyone’s situation is different.”

For Angelina Milo, who serves as the vice president of tax services at Meaden & Moore, the benefits of gifting a life insurance policy are clear.

A decade ago, while serving on the advisory board of the Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation, Angelina made a gift of life insurance to support the fund’s “For Women, Forever” 20th anniversary campaign.

“I wanted to make a large contribution, but at that time I had other expenses, such as my kids’ private school,” Angelina said. “This was a great way for me to combine estate planning and income tax planning early in my career.”

Angelina secured a $50,000 life insurance policy with premiums of just $500 per year. Like Naomi, she transferred ownership of the policy to Akron Community Foundation and received a charitable deduction for the annual premium payments. After Angelina’s lifetime, the Women’s Endowment Fund will use her generous gift to uplift and empower future generations of women and girls in Summit County.

“I knew my charity of choice was the Women’s Endowment Fund, so I wanted to make a significant contribution now, while I’m living,” she explained.

Another key benefit, Angelina said, is that her life Angelina Milo insurance policy is separate from the rest of her estate assets. “It’s not as if I need to carve out $50,000 of my wealth; I’m actually creating that wealth by donating the life insurance outside of my estate,” she said. “I can still leave my estate assets to my family in addition to making other charitable contributions from my estate later in life.”

Both Angelina and Naomi noted that gifts of life insurance are most beneficial for donors who: 1)

Are in good health and can qualify for affordable premiums

2)

Have reached their high-income-earning years and need a charitable tax deduction

In order to secure the policy, donors have to complete a physical exam and also demonstrate to the insurance company that they have a track record of supporting the named charity. “There has to be a pattern of past giving,” Naomi explained.

In addition to gifting new life insurance policies, donors also have the option of transferring ownership of an existing policy to charity. These gifts can be more complex because they require a policy valuation, so it’s key for the donor to work with their advisors prior to initiating the transfer. In either scenario, gifts of life insurance are often a win-win strategy for both the donor and the community, Naomi and Angelina said.

“I learned a long time ago from a client who was selling his business that it’s important to give back to the community where you earned your wealth,” Naomi said. “This is one way that I can do that.”

Fun Fact: This philanthropic couple met at – where else? – a fundraiser.

The Steere family has long been known for its philanthropy in the Greater Akron area. Bill Steere’s father, Frank W. Steere Jr., was one of the early recipients of the Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award in 1981, and both Bill’s parents and grandparents cared deeply about giving back to the community.

So, when Bill and Trish Steere began thinking about a plan for their philanthropy, involving Bill’s children was key. While Trish’s three children from her first marriage all live out of state, Bill’s sons, Brock and Brian, were born and raised in Akron.

They now help run Steere Enterprises, a thirdgeneration family business.

In 2014, Bill and Trish established a donoradvised fund at the foundation, the Steere Family Fund. A few years later, Bill joined the foundation’s board. He and Trish traveled with foundation staff to the National Center for Family Philanthropy conference soon after and helped champion the creation of The Center for Family Philanthropy.

How did you get your children involved in philanthropy?

Bill: That was the way they grew up. You sort of pass it from generation to generation.

Their grandparents were very involved in the community, and they saw Mignon (their mother, who died in 2010) and I be involved, too.

Trish: It’s good to get them involved sooner in life, rather than waiting until their kids are raised. Younger people always think, “Oh, we don’t really have the money to do that right now because we have all these other expenses.”

But bringing them in through the center let them see how they could afford to start giving, 18

no matter what the amount was. That’s why the foundation allowing people to establish a donor-advised fund with a lesser amount of money to get started is good. It’s saying that giving back isn’t just for the wealthy. When you’re raising a family, you can get so focused on saving every penny for your family, but there’s always someone who you can help out.

Are you also thinking about involving your grandchildren in your fund?

Bill: We’ve been talking to Karen Hrdlicka (director of The Center for Family Philanthropy), and I was surprised when she said that some families are bringing in young children. So, I think that’s going to be our plan next year. Karen put together a great program to help our family determine our interests. It was a nice family bonding process that actually worked even better than I thought it would.

support. Rather than having it all come out of the same fund, we created the Bill and Trish Steere Fund, which we’re using just for what she and I really want to support. And then we created the new Steere Family Fund, which is the one that our entire family has a say in.

What made you choose Akron Community Foundation for your donor-advised fund?

Bill: I didn’t want someone who could care less about where my money is going and why I’m spending the money. It’s just a financial transaction for them.

Trish: Akron Community Foundation does so much of the work. Like I said, Karen was able to help us make our choices and introduce us to organizations we would not have heard of otherwise.

Trish: We got so much more out of those meetings than just determining who we were going to donate to. We learned a lot about each other and what our goals were, especially with how to best use the business to give back.

It helped us narrow in on all our interests. I think it was great, not only for deciding what organizations we wanted to support, but also for supporting each other and our beliefs.

Bill: But you’re not going to get that from a private foundation or commercial company.

If I say, “Hey, what are some organizations working in health and human services that I may be interested in?” they’ll say, “Google it.”

One thing that also really resonated with me was the ability to donate a chunk of money and get a tax deduction in that year, without being obligated to give all that money away at one time. You can parcel it out to a number of different organizations. And the foundation makes it really easy. We just call and say, “I’d like to give $10,000 to this organization,” and it gets processed.

Bill: Because of that process, we realized we needed to have two donor-advised funds. Trish and I were using it (the original fund) for our giving, and then we were using it to support organizations that the company wanted to

Mission: To overcome blight and alleviate hunger in the community by teaching people to grow, prepare and preserve their own food while working alongside them to beautify neighborhoods.

Garden programs. Let’s Grow Akron’s deep community roots help the organization attract a variety of volunteers of all ages, especially schoolage students and interns.

Let’s Grow Akron, founded in 1988, is a true grassroots organization in every context. For 35 years, the nonprofit has helped improve neighborhoods and alleviate hunger by working alongside residents to create healthy food systems using community gardening and education.

Not only are people eating healthier as a result, but they also learn to prepare and preserve their own food, proactively improving their health, while beautifying these neighborhoods.

Helping to organize the community and creating shared spaces for growing food has created long-lasting and authentic relationships for Let’s Grow Akron.

With last year’s $12,000 Health & Human Services grant, Let’s Grow Akron served 3,500 people, with an abundant range of services and outcomes, like distributing more than 10,000 seed packets, launching 25 Community Food Gardens that serve 200 households, and providing 10,000 pounds of fresh food grown for community meals, food pantries and direct delivery.

The nonprofit also hosted weekly Summit Lake Farmers Markets, in addition to conducting monthly seasonal cooking classes, food preservation and community canning sessions, and weekly Kids in the

“Positive interactions among neighbors in a shared effort to transform unsightly vacant lots into productive community gardens increases a sense of pride and ownership that often leads to other issues being addressed,” states the organization’s website. “Healthy relationships, community involvement, outdoor physical activity, and increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables all contribute to mental and physical health and wellness. Increased health and wellness ultimately builds a stronger community.”

Akron Community Foundation is proud to offer a fund option for those who dream of making a difference in their community but may not have the $5,000 minimum donation amount ready to give upfront. Like any donor-advised fund, the starter fund is a simplified, flexible and affordable option for beginning your strategic philanthropic journey.

You can establish a donor-advised starter fund with an initial donation of just $300 and then build it up to the $5,000 balance requirement over a period of three years. Donations can be made on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis – it’s your decision.

Once your fund reaches $5,000, you can begin making grants to the causes you care about. You can also continue to build your fund over time through tax-deductible contributions so that you’ll have greater giving power in the future.
