Brotherhood Unbounded

T

his year, AKPsi rolled out several new leadership development programs and activities for brothers to participate in.

We launched our first global conference in October and held the second session in April. In addition, we rolled out a new survey, the Birkman Assessment, to help brothers better understand their own personal leadership style, how they work in a team, how they analyze information, and how they solve problems. Further, we have partnered with several other professional fraternities in developing a series of programs to further brothers’ understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion within AKPsi and beyond.

CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENT PATHWAY Chapters leaders and advisors, have shown an abundance of creativity in adjusting to the virtual chapter experience, including conducting activities and programs with other chapters and engaging alumni in virtual fundraising and

philanthropic events. In addition, the professional staff and the management team collaborated to create new resources to assist chapter leaders and advisors. Going into the 2021-22 academic year, each chapter will have a business plan specifically catered to address each chapter’s needs.

This past May, several dozen alumni gathered for a virtual wine tasting, and there will be many more fun opportunities to connect with brothers starting in the fall.

AKPsi Podcast: Operations Avenue Operations Avenue is a podcast led by the AKPsi Student Service’s staff giving chapter leaders the latest in chapter news and education. This podcast launched fall 2019 and has hosted eight seasons.

PHONE ETIQUETTE In the age of messaging apps and social media, it’s easy to come off as inattentive or impolite in the workplace. Here are a few practices to help you keep it professional at the office.

PERSONAL PHONE CALLS DURING MEETINGS

Unless you’re expecting an urgent call, don’t bring your phone into a meeting. If your phone is in the room with you, keep it out of sight, silence your ringer, and let calls go to voicemail. If you must take the call, politely excuse yourself from the room and keep the call brief.

In general, personal calls are better conducted during breaks.

ZOOM MEETINGS

Avoid checking your phone during Zoom meetings. Even off screen, other attendees can tell when you check your phone, and you may miss important information being presented. Avoid multitasking, and look directly at the screen to show you’re being attentive and engaged.

ANSWERING THE OFFICE PHONE

A lost call is a lost opportunity—it’s everyone’s responsibility to answer the office phone.

When you answer, mention the name of your company. If the caller is looking for a specific person, record who the caller is looking for, what they are calling about, and how to get back in touch with them. Make sure you know how to put callers on hold or transfer them to other departments.

OTHER TELEPHONE DON’TS

When in public places, avoid using speakerphone, video calls, or other similar methods of conducting a call. Not only is it disruptive, but a business caller may not want their conversation broadcast to a room full of people.

Instead, make calls in private places where you and the person you’re speaking to are the only parties involved.

lpha Kappa Psi Fraternity has a new suit of clothes. At the beginning of summer this year arrangements were made with the regular fraternity tailor for a new outfit. The subject for the tailor’s measuring tape was found to be of athletic build, sturdy of limb, trim of trunk, long of arm, with a growing reach, and coming into the full bloom of young manhood with square shoulders, easy of poise, and, withal, the type of person who wears his clothes well. Under the circumstances, only the choicest fabric and the finest workmanship could suffice.

Accordingly, a very carefully wrought garment was built at Atlanta, Georgia. Because of the urgency of the case, overtime work by the fraternity's most skillful workmen turned out the completed garment in record time. Brother John T. Madden was the chief designer, and without the Trojan service which he rendered a very ill-cut and poorly-fitting garment would have resulted. With rare foresight as to future needs and a full realization of present difficulties which he had faced for two years as national president, he furnished a basic pattern according to which he and his good henchmen, Brothers Lasher, of Alpha; Gauch, of Mu, and Thacker, of Nu, were able to fashion a garment eminently becoming and fitted to its needs.

Doubtless repairs and even betterments will be needed from time to time, for the best of fabric and accessories are not ever-wearing. Rips, loose buttons and holes are the best evidence of growth and

activity, and this youth in the professional fraternity circle has much of both ahead of him. The new constitution adopted at Atlanta is a document of real merit. As the basic law of the fraternity, it provides the principles for the government of our Grand Chapter and the local constituent chapters. It also lays the foundation for a code of procedure. It is not conceivable that the requirements of the remote

Bearing these things in mind, and asking confidently for the kindly co-operation of all the chapters, the Grand Officers are entering uphold their

chapter which shall bear the name of the locality and a numerical designation, e.g., Boston 1. This should provide a suitable avenue for the activities of the alumni who are not yet ready upon leaving college to enter the ranks of the retired, and should, at the same time, place the responsibility for the management of the collegiate local squarely on the shoulders of the undergraduates, where it belongs.

The new Constitution thus makes clear definition of the persons eligible for membership and also the class of school in which a chapter may be installed.

A definite trial procedure is provided.

Voting by proxy at any convocation of the Grand Chapter is authorized and a procedure established for the prevention of abuse of the proxy.

A geographical districting of the country is authorized and a Grand Council-formerly the Executive Committee—composed of one elected member from each district, together..- with the Grand Officers, is provided for.

One of the most forward-looking features incorporated is the provision under which international extension becomes possible.

It may interest the brothers to

know that negotiations to that end are already under way.

These are a few of the features of the new law. It was deemed best not to promulgate the new Constitution until the work of each local had got well under way for the new year. In this way the familiar work of the opening of the school, such as chapter organization, pledging, initiation, etc., would proceed smoothly under the former methods. Each chapter is urged to study carefully the new law, and thereafter to conform its own organization thereto, and to be governed thereby in its relations to the Grand Chapter.

Interpretation of doubtful points should be referred to the Grand Officers.

All brothers will be glad to know that the fraternity is entering upon the new academic year with rare promise for a period of distinct accomplishment. Growth has been rapid in the last few years. With a new basic law capable of meeting the fraternity's needs for the future, with a program for the upbuilding of the local life of the chapter, and with a spirit of co-operation such as is typical of Alpha Kappa Psi, nothing is impossible.

The 1921 Atlanta Convention was the first Convention held Post-World War I that had not only deeply affected the world but also members of AKPsi. At the time of the convention AKPsi was composed of 26 chapters (21 of whom are in operation today) and about 709 members.

This summary of the drafting of an AKPsi Constitution marks a step toward the governing documents in use today. Presently, AKPsi is comprised of 210 chapters and about 11,402 collegiate members as of June 22, 2021. The tradition of policy improvements and updates continues with the use of the 19th edition of the Constitution and the new Code of Conduct which was introduced in 2020.

duties under the new Constitution, and shall strive to guide the affairs of the fraternity in accord with its letter and spirit. It is the purpose of this communication to give a brief summary of the main features of the new law, complete copies of which will reach the chapters in the near future.

Under the old law the general fraternity met once a year in convention, and only for the period of the convention did it in fact have an existence, during the interim acting through its delegated representatives, viz., the national officers and an executive committee. The new law provides for a grand chapter with members available for being called into assembly at any time.

Each local constituent chapter is authorized to select at its first regular meeting in November a member of the Grand Chapter, who shall be the medium of relationship and communication between the national and the local bodies throughout the year and who, it is expected, will represent the local at the annual convention.

This gives the Grand Chapter an existence in fact throughout the year and makes possible a convocation at any time the need is urgent. As indicated above, the fraternity has a dual existence through a Grand Chapter and Local Constituent Chapters.

A provision of the new Constitution makes possible the formation of Alumni Chapters.

In other words, locals are of two kinds, collegiate and alumni.

Ten or more alumni, resident in a given locality, whether or not formerly members of the same collegiate local, may petition the Grand Chapter for an alumni

Siegler Scholarship from the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation. Named in memory of Brother Siegler, the scholarship is one of more than 20 awarded annually to AKPsi student members that display a strong record of chapter, campus, and community leadership.

How did you find AKPsi on campus and what inspired you to join?

What lessons did you learn through officer roles/AKPsi activities?

I found AKPsi because I knew about it through my older sister, Kayla, who had joined the chapter at the University of South Carolina. She loved her experience and was able to grow so much professionally and meet amazing people who are still some of her closest friends to this day. When I found out that Elon had a chapter, I knew that I wanted to join as soon as I could.

I learned so many invaluable lessons from my leadership roles in AKPsi and from just being a member in general.

The top lesson is definitely the importance and power of networking. From the time that I started pledging AKPsi, I realized how valuable it was to network with the older brothers who had ample knowledge, experience, and connections. I continued to expand my network as

I searched for internship and job opportunities throughout the years and have been able to learn so much from each and every person I have encountered. I also learned how to be more confident about taking risks, especially when applying for positions that I didn’t personally think

position, which was the most rewarding position I ever held, and I am so grateful for their confidence in me. This lesson also translated over to professional opportunities as I then applied to positions that I previously would not have even tried to apply for.

Why did you apply for the Foundation scholarships?

I applied for the Foundation scholarships to help open the door to more opportunities.

I will pursue any opportunity I have access to, but some things are not always feasible due to financial constraints.

The money from the two Foundation scholarships I received throughout my undergraduate career helped make it possible to study abroad three times, hold four internships, perform undergraduate research, focus on my leadership positions, plus more.

What does the award mean to you and how did it impact your academic experience?

I am grateful beyond words for the awards and scholarships I received and am so thankful for all the generous donors who make these scholarships possible. My academic experience was greatly enhanced by the scholarships and so much financial pressure was relieved which allowed me to focus more on my academics, extracurriculars, professional development, and entire college experience.

What are your future plans?

The History of the AKPsi International Office

J.F. Wild and Company State Bank Building

The 1922 Cincinnati Convention appointed a committee to review the role of the Secretary-Treasurer (today’s CEO). It concluded that the secretary-treasurer should no longer be elected annually at the conventions.

Instead, the position should be a full-time professional position, appointed by the board of directors. Further, the related responsibilities of the secretarytreasurer should be conducted in a central, permanent location.

Recommendations were approved, and when AKPsi rented office space in the J.F. Wild and Company State Bank Building in downtown Indianapolis, from 1939 to 1952, it became the first professional fraternity to have a central headquarters.

The staff consisted of Secretary-Treasurer Dwight F. Bedell and Elizabeth Harris, the stenographic secretary.

AKPsi became the first professional fraternity to purchase and occupy its own office.

The former residence, a story-and a-half bungalow located at 111 East 38th Street (below), had less than 2,000 square feet. The Fraternity later purchased land behind the building, which was formerly used by the city as a trolley turn-around, with the idea of building a large national office on the expanded site.

An architect was hired in 1957 to design a modern two-story office building (Alpha Kappa Psi would occupy the second floor, and collect rental income from the first floor), but the plan never materialized and the building and its four lots were sold in 1969.

J.D. Sparks Headquarters 9595 Angola Court

Alpha Kappa Psi became a landlord when it purchased 9595 Angola Court (below) in August of 1990, and officially became occupants the following January after the tenants (an engineering firm) vacated the premises. Finally, the Fraternity had a onestory office that was built as a commercial office building. The facility, named for Secretary-Treasurer J.D. Sparks, who served in that capacity from 1928 to 1969, was on the city’s northwest side (near College Park, a hub of Greek-letter headquarters).

8001 E. 196th St., Noblesville

Just hours after selling 111 East 38th Street, Alpha Kappa Psi purchased 3706 Washington Boulevard (above) and joined eight other fraternities and sororities in the four-block area between 34th and 38th Streets.

The new headquarters, which included a paved parking lot and 5,000 square feet of available space, was approximately one block away from the former 38th Street headquarters. No renovations were necessary, and five days after the building was purchased, the national office was open for business.

But by the late ‘80s it was determined that the two-story former residence was inefficient and no longer fulfilling AKPsi’s needs. Committees were formed in 1989 to make recommendations, and in 1990, the board of directors authorized the purchase of 9595 Angola Court. When AKPsi moved out of 3706 it was the last Greekletter organization remaining on Washington Boulevard, as other groups had moved to the emerging College Park area on the city’s northwest side.

2005-2021

The Heritage Center 7801 E 88th Street

The J.D. Sparks Headquarters served AKPsi well for many years, but the growth of the Fraternity and its staff drove the need for a larger facility. With the idea that a larger building could also serve as a meeting facility for board meetings and space to display the historical archives of AKPsi, the Board of Directors authorized the purchase of 7801 E 88th Street (below left) on Indianapolis’ northeast side. With the change in facilities, the international office grew from 3,000 to nearly 10,000 square feet.

In March 2021, the AKPsi professional staff did the last walkthrough of 7801 E. 88th Street, and drove the 10 miles north to our new AKPsi home at 8001 E. 196th St (above), embarking on a new chapter in AKPsi history and the many possibilities that lie ahead.

In a year of many changes in AKPsi, including a shift of our educational programming events from in-person to virtual and the expansion of our educational programs through Brotherhood Unbounded, a change of address almost seems par for the course.

Looking to the future, the new building is more than just a building. It represents the opportunities ahead — to expand our career and leadership development resources through the creation of a learning lab and retreat center. It also provides more opportunities to leave behind many more footprints — of leadership, of learning, of friendship.

OFFICE TO-DO APPS

As busy professionals, our office and home lives are filled with never-ending tasks and deadlines. But while Post-Its stuck to the refrigerator may cut it for grocery lists, your workplace to-do lists are better managed by apps that can store, sort, search, and organize information while also integrating with other office software tools. Here are some apps for building and maintaining your to-do lists worth checking out.

EVERNOTE

Evernote has long been one of the top note-taking apps and offers features such as cloud-based note storage, templates, document scanning, and sharing notes with team members.

Evernote has a business-tier platform that is great for optimizing workflows and team projects. It integrates with Slack, Outlook, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, and Salesforce.

Evernote can be installed on Android or iOS.

TRELLO Trello is a popular task management app with a pinboardstyle interface.

Trello is projectbased, so you can customize, organize, and manage individual “to-do” task cards for a project among

multiple team members. Trello lets you easily track progress, share updates, create timelines and calendars, and attach files. Trello has plenty of third-party functionality with apps like Google Drive and Slack.

Trello is available for both Apple and Android devices.

ONENOTE OneNote is part of Microsoft’s 365 Suite as an alternative to note-taking apps like Evernote. It offers organizational tools and to-do tagging, as well as the ability to draw and annotate, share media, and share notebooks or content libraries with coworkers.

This cross-platform app is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android devices as part of Microsoft 365.

REMINDERS For Apple devices, Reminders is a great way to track tasks and to-do lists to ensure your day-to-day workflow runs smoothly.

Substacks create added layers to your lists, so every task gets completed on time.

Reminders helps to keep track of due dates and times, share lists with coworkers, add attachments, and more.

GOOGLE TASKS AND KEEP

Each of these tools is useful for creating and organizing lists and substacks, as well as accessing your lists from the web or a mobile device.

These tools are nested with other Google tools such as your calendar.

However, there is some difference in functionality between the two.

Google Tasks offers structured information and substacks with a minimalist textbased design. You can add date and time reminders to tasks and set up recurring task reminders. You can also organize tasks by date or some custom order.

Google Keep keeps notes in poster format, to which you can add text, pictures, web content, and drawings. You can add date and time reminders to entire notes, and set up recurring location-based reminders. You can also drag your notes into Google Docs or use other integrated tools.

One of the key differences is that Keep allows you to share tasks and notes with coworkers.

Raking Herbs THE HERBTASTIC IS COMING TO A STORE NEAR YOU

F

or most, innovation is born from necessity. For Kendall Buck, Stetson ‘19, it’s born from black bean salsa.

The Stetson University Sophomore created her herb rake — the Herbtastic — to simplify her most dreaded kitchen chore.

“My mom makes this really good black bean corn salsa, but it uses an entire bundle of cilantro,” she said. “We absolutely hated stripping the cilantro leaves, to the point where we’d trade off other chores to avoid it.”

Buck comes from an entrepreneurial family. Her late father, a chef, had opened a restaurant in Florida before pulling up their stakes and moving

to Arizona, so her mother could help open a private medical school. Buck said they constantly sought out new opportunities, and they weren’t afraid of risk. She carried that spirit from her high school DECA club into Stetson’s Alpha Kappa Psi chapter.

As a family, they ordered and tested existing herb-stripping products on the market, and found them all lacking.

“The old way of doing it is to pull the herb through a slotted spoon, and all the products we tried basically did the same thing,” Buck said. “One day, one of us said, ‘We just need to rake it off, what’s the big deal?’ That’s how the idea of a rake dawned on us.”

Buck worked with the 3D print-

ing lab at Stetson to refine the Herbtastic rake’s design and 3D print a few prototypes. Buck sent the prototypes to friends and family members, who tried it and passed it along to someone else with surveys to collect feedback on the rake.

Based on user feedback, they gave the rake a few more features, adding a pressure block to the back and changing the angle of the rake’s teeth. Buck printed out a new round of prototypes and sent them out again with great success.

Buck then upped the ante and created a Kickstarter campaign to gauge interest in her invention. The campaign drew $5,000 from 131 contributors, well over Buck’s original goal of $2,000.

“That’s when we knew this could be a real business,” Buck said. “We used a manufacturer to make the Herbtastic because 3D printing plastics aren’t very heat resistant or sturdy.

I wanted to make a durable, dishwasher-safe product.”

Today, the Herbtastic is available on Amazon and at theherbtastic.com. Buck promotes the rake by using it to make different kinds of salsa on the Herbtastic’s website and social media accounts.

This summer, Buck plans to get the Herbtastic into brickand-mortar locations in the Deland, Florida area (where Stetson is located), as well as in Arizona, where her mother still lives.

“We make a lot more black bean corn salsa now, which was the goal all along,” Buck said.

“We’ve got new products in the works. Next, we’re working on an ice cream scoop and a zester.”

York graduated from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo in 2006 where he studied computer engineering and minored in business. He also served as the chapter president for AKPsi’s Cal Poly-SLO chapter.

“I remember going to an awards ceremony for the engineering department. I was impressed by the 4.0 GPA people—which I wasn’t,” he said.

“I didn’t want to be a full-time engineer.

I wanted to have more of a business atmosphere to my career. When I found Alpha Kappa Psi, it seemed like a natural progression.”

“Every new employee we hire is the biggest company I’ve ever worked at,” he said.

“As HG grew, it had different needs. Seven or eight years ago, we had to learn how to hire and interview.

Then it became managing and growing our teams. Now it’s defining goals and enabling our leaders.

After graduation, York found part-time work with an IT consulting firm, which helped him build connections with numerous businesses in the Santa Barbara area. He found himself faced with the choice of moving to the Bay area to work for a big company, or to join a philanthropic search engine start-up called NOZA. NOZA won out.

“It was a leap into waters unknown,” he said. “I always envisioned working at a small company and helping build that company.”

mbarking on your startup journey can feel like riding a rollercoaster with no safety harness. As you weather the exciting, terrifying swings of collaborating, funding, troubleshooting, and launching your big idea, you need a trusted partner to keep you sane and keep you on track.

Going into business with an AKPsi brother or family member may seem like the obvious choice, but a working relationship requires its own unique set of parameters.

The stakes are high. Choosing the wrong partner might not just cost you your business, it could cost you a valuable friendship.

Save yourself some tears. Consider these factors before taking on a friend or relative as a business partner.

Getting along well isn’t enough.

A fruitful partnership demands more than a good rapport. Your potential partner should be worthy of your total trust and respect, from their work ethic and decision-making to their personal integrity and motivations.

Bringing your startup to life will require open communication, radical honesty, and a willingness to compromise. You need someone who treats the opinions and perspectives of others with sincerity, who can collaborate as part of a team.

Consider how your potential partner handles conflict, adversity, and setbacks.

Can they put aside their personal feelings to act in the best interests of the company? Can you trust them to hang tough when times

BIRKMAN METHOD ASSESSMENT For an organization or business to run like a well-oiled machine, businesses must understand their people as deeply as they understand their protocols. Numerous personality tests have crept into the hiring process over the past decade, but only one speaks specifically to the context of a work environment—the Birkman Method.

Putting Your Agreement Into Black and White BUSINESS PLAN When partnering with a friend or relative, it’s easy to assume you’re on the same page when you aren’t. Putting your business plan, strategy, and values in writing leaves much less gray area and room for conflicting interpretations.

PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT When you form your partnership, put your partnership agreement in writing. Your agreement should include the percentages of ownership, the distribution of

profits and losses, and the duties and powers of each partner. It should also outline how the partnership can be terminated and how a partner may buy their share of the partnership.

Chehannah Hayden, East Carolina ‘19, worked closely with other chapter officers along the Carolina Coast to provide support and share strategies throughout the year.

HOFSTRA

Motivational speaker Russ Terry, Jr. led a virtual professional event organized by the Hofstra University chapter. During the event, Terry provided attendees with interview tips and helped them set personal goals.

MISSISSIPPI

The University of Mississippi chapter held a virtual alumni roundtable, where alumni spoke on topics like personal finance, staying involved with AKPsi after graduation, and how to navigate the first 100 days at a new job.

When the pandemic canceled internships, the Indiana University chapter developed an alumni mentor program to help members explore their career path.  Dana Walker, Indiana ‘17, said, “This was a program to help people's who internship experiences were changed be able to get a better sense of the positions or industry they were looking into. Many alumni said their internships were the things that helped them decide if their career path was a good fit, and they wanted to be able to provide that to current brothers.”

NEBRASKA

A discussion panel of professionals from the Kiewit construction and engineering corporation was hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln chapter, the panel focused on life as a business professional.

Many chapters went above and beyond to maintain the AKPsi experience. From recruiting and rush activities to spotlighting success, the AKPsi spirit held strong.

SOUTH CAROLINA

The University of South Carolina chapter conducted a full rush week and eight-week new member experience for the 45 new members who joined Beta Upsilon in 2020.

The chapter won Best Professional Fraternity on campus from the Garnet Media Group, which was established in 2017, it represents the collective partnership between the student media organizations at the University of South Carolina.

The Central Michigan University chapter partnered with the university’s Career Development Center and the College of Business Administration to hold a virtual career fair. The event connected students of all majors with recruiters, internships, and entry-level job opporutnities.

Virtual panel discussions about the consulting industry and an open networking with nine consultancies was featured during the University of Maryland chapter’s 11th Annual Consulting Career Day. PENNSYLVANIA

Empowering Communities AKPsi’s philanthropic efforts held strong during the pandemic. As tough as it is to keep a chapter running, many chapters still fulfilled their commitment to the needs of those around them, outside the walls of their universities.

NORTH TEXAS

$1,500 for the North Texas Food Bank was raised by the University of Texas at Dallas chapter. Their donation provided around 4,500 meals for those in need within the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

WASHINGTON

The Washington University chapter launched a virtual fundraising event selling custom printed COVID masks and stickers. All proceeds went to the Forward Through Ferguson nonprofit, which seeks to bring about racially equitable systems in the St. Louis region.

LOYOLA- CHICAGO

The University of Pennsylvania chapter has worked to promote creative contests for all students to participate in, allowing the chapter to maintain its corporate sponsorship with Adobe.

LIPSCOMB

A graduate school panel to help prepare attendees to take the next step in their educational journeys was held by the Lipscomb University chapter.

Over $1,000 in donations to Global Giving, Black Lives Matter, and the Equality Federation was raised by the Loyola University-Chicago chapter.

Pressing Forward As a new year approaches, we hope our chapters continue to communicate and collaborate to keep growing and providing members and the communities around them with service and opportunities.

1971: Special award was given to NASA at 1971 Las Vegas Convention and NASA representative wrote an interesting article for the following Diary detailing the importance of space exploration for the future.

MIKE ENZI GEORGE, WASHINGTON ‘64-LIFE, served in the United States Senate from 1997 to 2021.

He also served as a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1987 to 1991 and as Mayor of Gillette, Wyoming, from 1975 to 1983. In 2009 the Senator traveled back to his Alma Mater, where he once served as Chapter President, to speak to the chapter and offer some advice to his undergraduate brothers. During his guest speaker appearance, Enzi discussed leadership and building relationships with diverse group of people.

His participation helped the George Washington Chapter’s campus reputation, increased recruitment and morale for several years after his visit.

M

y introduction to Alpha Kappa Psi was in 1975 as a member of the Gustavus Adolphus College collegiate debate team where I met several upperclassman brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi. The fraternity was appealing to me as it was a national professional business fraternity. When the opportunity was made available to pledge in 1976, it was a dream come true. Crossing the threshold of membership on October 21, 1976, was a day I have never forgotten and never regretted.

Attending the 1977 National Convention in Atlanta, GA, exposed me to the vast network of our brotherhood. No matter where I moved, it was easy to stay involved and connect with Alpha Kappa Psi brothers.

In 1982 was elected to the Board of Directors as the Southeast Regional Director, and in 1985 at the National Convention in St. Louis, MO, was elected

to serve as the first female National Vice President. Traveling the country, visiting chapters, and encouraging expansion, an added responsibility was finding talent to continue to serve the fraternity. The talent pool was rich with young brothers that were willing to fulfill their lifelong commitment. Many of this young talent pool continue to give their time, talent, and treasure and serve the fraternity in a variety of positions. Trust me it was a wild ride. Working full time and spending weekends on the road to visit our chapters — one year traveling 18 consecutive weekends. Not to mention the correspondence and phone calls.

Plus taking vacations to attend week-long National Conventions.

Our fraternity was in a period of needed change from 1985 to 1993.

Development of our national staff was a key priority, and programming that better served our members. Reorganization was not easy and led to a significant change to our leadership structure. Beneficial changes that brought about continued growth in our membership and enhanced our professional business network.

Still remember the experience like it was yesterday!

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO AKPSI? TONY: I had recently changed majors to Finance and was looking for networking and professional opportunities within the College of Business KATIE: I was looking to join a group and make friends. I had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time. There were always a group of people hanging outside the business school. Everyone genuinely seemed to like each other. I thought it was a bonus to learn interview skills, resume writing, etc.  WHAT IMPACT

HAS AKPSI HAD ON YOUR LIFE? TONY: I never would have met Katie if not for joining AKPsi. We met at the 1999 Convention in Orlando and it’s been a fun ride together ever since! KATIE: AKPsi prepared me to confidently enter the working world. It truly gave me a leg up over other new graduates. The most significant impact is meeting Tony at the 1999 National Convention. We got married three years later and have 2 beautiful children.  WHY DO YOU BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT TO GIVE TO THE FOUNDATION? TONY: Thinking back to my days at UF, I wish the Academy had been around at that time. I believe that providing such a unique professional leadership opportunity, as well as the annual professional seminars (called Success Institutes back in the day) will continue to allow current students to prepare for the ever-changing world around us. KATIE: I think it is important to give to something larger than yourself and invest in others. Tony and I benefited from AKPsi because others before us invested.

Additionally, our world has become digitized, computerized, and most recently socially distant. People need human contact now more than ever. AKPsi brings people together. We are a brotherhood and brothers stick together! 

YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS RELUCTANT TO GIVE? TONY: Think back to when you were a student, and the friendships and great times you experienced with your fellow brothers. It’s a small way to pay it forward for the experiences and benefits you’ve gained both while in school and after graduation.

KATIE: I completely agree with Tony. I would also add there are many ways to give. If you can’t give financially, perhaps there is a chapter near you that needs help so you can donate your time. Tony and I were chapter advisors at Jacksonville University (Epsilon Tau) at one point to help re-boot the chapter.  IF YOU COULD GIVE

YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?  TONY: It’s okay to step outside your comfort zone.

It’s something I came to know well later in my career and continues to help guide my perspective and challenges each day. KATIE: You don’t have to have it all figured out.
