Editor’s Message Dear readers, It’s been another busy winter heading into spring.

We just barely catch our breath from our Annual Membership Meeting and fundraiser/auction when show season begins.

January started off with attending sport shows after a taking a year break due to the pandemic. It was great getting back to “in-person” shows! APHA was able to participate in the Dallas Safari Club, Wild Sheep Foundation and Safari Club International shows once again this winter. All were very productive for us with lots of visits to the APHA booth.

The shows seemed to have fewer in attendance but those who attended seemed to be more serious about booking hunts and the overwhelming opinion was that most guides sold more hunts than ever before. With all the uncertainty surrounding COVID and travel, Alaska remains a most desired place for folks to come hunt!

A few years ago, we implemented our Business Partnership Program and welcomed sponsorships from The Wildlife Gallery, KUIU, Stone Glacier, YETI and Global Rescue. We are strengthening that program and are pleased to announce that Justin Walker has joined the APHA team. Justin has been brought on as our Strategic Partnership Director and will be working with our partners to give them the best return on their investment with us.

Justin will be working to strengthen our partnerships as well as bringing in new partnerships. In his first month, Justin brought Beretta, Kenetrek and Marsupial Gear to our group of partners!

Production for our first ever guide discount catalogue is underway. This will be a complete listing of all our partners and will offer their discounts along with instructions on how to purchase their products. Be on the look-out for this catalogue to hit your email in the coming weeks.

As is the case with most everything these days, magazine production costs continue to rise. We have started digitizing our current magazine and hope to have past issues as well as all future issues online soon. Once this digitizing process is done, we will be asking folks for their preference on how they would like to have their magazine delivered. We will continue to offer printed magazines but now you will have the option of reading it online as well.

I’ve been very fortunate to have been a part of this APHA organization for the past seven years. I love the work that APHA does and fully support our mission. I have been fortunate to have such a supportive board of directors and could not have found a better place to work.

We’ve come a long way in the seven years we’ve been working together, our fundraiser has grown substantially, we’re now holding extremely successful hunt raffles that not only benefit APHA but also support our guides, we’ve secured some great Governor’s Tags, built a business partnership program, improved the quality of our magazine that is soon to be digital and gone from a small organization that relied heavily on its grant in aid supporters to afford us the ability to fight to maintain hunting rights in Alaska. Due to the hard work of your board of directors, we are in a much better position to stand on our own.

I’ve enjoyed being a part of this growth and take pride in all our accomplishments. It’s been a super busy seven years and it is time for me to pull back to enjoy life a bit more. With that in mind, I will be going to part time effective in July. I’m pleased to announce that Angie Bloomquist will be coming back to join the APHA staff and will be doing some “job sharing” with me. Details of this transition will be announced in the coming weeks.

Yes, I’ll be cutting back my hours but you’re not getting rid of me yet!

I’m very excited to see what the future holds for the APHA organization. We’ve built a great team with Justin, Angie, Thor and Chelsea and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us.

President’s Message Greetings from Kodiak, Spring is in the air in Alaska! The snow is melting, the temperature is warming up, and it is bear hunting time. After a long winter of work in the office and attending regulatory meetings, guides are itching to get back into the field.

This was a busy winter for many of us in Alaska.

The Conservation Shows we all attend were back in full swing, and hunters were hungry to book trips to Alaska. In addition to the show cycle, for those who operate on Fish and Wildlife Service lands, it was a Concession Prospectus year. This entails spending weeks at the keyboard documenting our individual business operations plans and guiding experience to compete for the rights to guide hunters on Service lands in Alaska, for the next ten years. This is a stressful time for current permit holders as they try and hold on to their current concessions, and a hopeful time for newer guides to try and find an opportunity to expand their operations.

The Alaska Board of Game (BOG) and Big Game Commercial Services Board were also back to inperson meetings this winter. Unfortunately, the Central and Southwest Region BOG meeting, at the end of January, was not well attended by hunting guides. Even though APHA was in attendance for every day of the meeting, without additional guides there, our industry faced some substantial losses.

Thankfully, our membership heeded the call, and the Statewide BOG meeting in March was much better attended by the guide industry. Due in part to the efforts of our attending members, the Board of Game unanimously defeated numerous proposals that were intended to harm our profession.

In the Alaska Legislature, APHA’s biggest priority continues to be the Charitable Gaming bill. Currently the use of the internet to market and sell raffle tickets in Alaska is only legal because of our states covid disaster declaration. Passage of this bill would allow groups, such as APHA, to continue to use the internet to market and sell our raffles after the disaster declaration expires. This bill has widespread support in the legislature, however for various reasons it continues to be held up in committee.

On the federal front, the Federal Subsistence Board continues to close hunting on massive sections of federal lands in Alaska to all but local users. While most Alaskans support hunting preferences for local users during times of resource shortage, these closures are not being implemented due to animal population concerns, but rather to address perceived social conflicts. This system of dual federal and state wildlife management in Alaska is not working and a coalition of Alaska based conservation groups are starting to push back against these closures. APHA is engaged in this effort and is committed to helping to build a management model that is fair to all hunters, while continuing to offer priority use for those who need the resource the most.

Lastly, in the previous edition of The Alaska Professional Hunter, I noted that Angie Bloomquist would be stepping back from her paid position with APHA. However, I am happy to report that after taking two months off, she realized that she missed APHA and wanted to come back in an expanded role.

Also, I am happy to announce that Justin Walker has joined our team as the new Director of Strategic Partnerships for APHA. Some of you might know Justin from his time working with Global Rescue. We are thrilled to have Angie and Justin on our team and look forward seeing how they help APHA to continue to move forward into the future!

Legislative Update Dear Guides, On March 18th Congressman Don Young passed away suddenly and Alaska lost a giant. Young was first elected in 1973 and served 49 years in Congress. At the time of his passing, he was the Dean of the House and the longest serving Republican in history.

Don Young is the only Congressman I have known and a leader that I will forever admire.

I learned as a boy how to help with regulatory compliance. I think I was four years old when began helping monitor the discharge from our tailing ponds. I remember watching hours and hours of equipment time spent tapering tailing piles to the satisfaction of BLM reclamation requirements. As a young man working in the underground workings at Nolan Creek, just over the hill from my family’s property, it was impressed on me the value of knowing when the MSHA inspector was in route. From an early age I have been attenuated to the stress surrounding the arrival of an agent of the government in camp. I was taught and have come to fear the government and its agencies more than I fear a surprise encounter with a bear. Bears will hurt you, but the government will ruin you and your family.

Growing up, my family had a complex relationship with the Government. My dad moved to Alaska from New Mexico with the dream of founding his own mining company. Two weeks before Don passed my wife, Don, his wife Anne, Lisa and Verne Murkowski and I sat together at the SCI banquet in Anchorage. My wife decided she wanted to go alligator hunting in Louisiana and Don was exuberant on the idea.

“I’ve done it! It was great! You will love it!” He was the life of the evening holding court, joking, telling stories, and charming all of us with his blend of off and on color mischief. Lance Kronberger and I were visiting at one point in the evening and it came up that he should say hello to Don. Lance will have to tell you his side of the story sometime but it was easy to see the comraderie and mutual understanding pass between hunters and men of faith. My wife stole a great photo with Don and Anne promising to send pictures of her alligator to him as a reward. Don was sharp as a tack, quick witted and verbosely charming. Yet it was hard not to notice that he seemed winded after helping recognize Josh Revak for his accomplishments on behalf of sportsmen in the legislature. I’ll never forget the last evening I spent with the only Congressman for Alaska I have ever known.

May Don’s body rest in peace, surely his spirit will endure with all of us who were blessed to know the Congressman for all Alaska.

any living member of Congress. I don’t know this for a fact, but he probably sponsored just about as much legislation as any member of Congress EVER. Don fought for Alaska natives, he fought for miners, he fought for hunters, he fought for states rights he worked with republicans and democrats and never slowed down. After Russian invaded Ukraine he sponsored legislation to seize oligarchs yachts. President Biden featured this legislation in his state of the union address. Congressman Young was re-elected every two years for nearly fifty years. He secured earmarks, promises from agencies to get off Alaskans backs. He worked for Alaskans who voted for him, he worked for Alaskans who voted against him. He shaped fisheries management in Alaska he punished environmental groups and “antis” while voicing his support for legalized marijuana. Don Young was an institution and to many in Congress he was Alaska.

Nominations for Board members are made during the annual business meeting in December of each year. Directors are elected and serve for a three year term. Officers are elected during the first meeting of the new board at the close of the membership meeting.

SAM ROHRER, President - 2011-2023 Sam was born and raised on Kodiak Island in a guiding family. He has been involved in the business since his early teens. He has been fortunate to have the opportunity to guide in many different areas of Alaska. He received his Assistant Guide license at the age of 18 and his Registered Guide license at the age of 21. Sam lives in Kodiak with his very understanding wife, Sarah, and their four kids. They own and operate a big game guiding, sport fishing and wildlife viewing operation on Kodiak.

WAYNE KUBAT, Vice President - 2012-2024 Wayne received his registered guide license and started Alaska Remote Guide Service in 1986. He’s been a member of the APHA since then and is now a master guide. He guides for brown bear, Dall sheep, and moose and also markets a video on calling and hunting moose. He keeps active in wildlife and guiding issues through the BOG and BGCSB. He and his wife, Marilyn, live near Wasilla and Marilyn is vital to both businesses.

LYLE BECKER, Treasurer - 2013-2024 Born and raised in a small town in central Ohio, Lyle grew up hunting, trapping, fishing, and dreaming of one day moving to Alaska. After commercial fishing in Bristol Bay several summers during college, he moved up permanently in 2006 with the goal of trapping and one day owning a guiding business. He received his Registered Guide license in December of 2008. Lyle is a board member of the South Central Chapter of the Alaska Tappers Association, and resides in Anchorage with his wife Alexandra.

Introduced to the outdoors at a young age, Cabot’s passion has always revolved around hunting and fishing. Cabot worked in Alaska as a packer in his off months while obtaining a degree from Virginia Tech in Geography with a focus on Aerospatial and Environmental Analysis. He realized he wanted to fully pursue an outfitting career in Alaska and has since then obtained his registered guide license and now runs Alaska Wild Wind Adventures where he currently holds an exclusive concession on the Alaskan Peninsula.

DAN MONTGOMERY, Director - 2013-2022 Dan was born in a small town in eastern Washington and grew up hunting and fishing.

He moved to Alaska in 1982 and got his assistant guide license in 1985 and received his registered guide license in 1993. That same year he started his own guiding business Alaska Trophy Adventures. He has since earned his Master license and also holds a commercial pilot license for both land and sea. Dan has lived in Southeast Alaska (Juneau), the Arctic (Kotzebue) and now lives in Wasilla.

In 2010, the State of Alaska restricted the reindeer hunting season on Kodiak to six months and limited the annual take to one reindeer per hunter. The state also reclassified reindeer on Kodiak as “caribou”.

Reindeer eat the leaves of willows, sedges, flowering tundra plants, and mushrooms during the summer. They switch to lichens (reindeer moss), dried sedges (grasslike plants), and small shrubs (like blueberry) in September. A reindeer has a thick coat that is brown in the summer and gray during the winter. Its chest and belly are pale, and it has a white rump and tail.

A male’s antlers are larger and more complex than those of a female. A male usually sheds his antlers in the fall after the mating season, while a female keeps her antlers until spring. Reindeer can run as fast as 50 mph and are excellent swimmers. They feed on herbs sedges, mosses, and lichens in the summer but mainly feed on lichens in the winter, often digging through the snow with their hooves to expose the lichens. Reindeer breed in October, and after a gestation of 210 to 240 days, females give birth to a single calf weighing 6.6 to 26.5 lbs. One hour after it is born, a calf can follow its mother, and at oneday old, it can run at fast speeds. Calves are weaned when they are one-month old, and reindeer reach sexual maturity when they are one to three years old.

The Reindeer (caribou) population on Kodiak has remained stable over the past several years, and biologists estimate there are 250 to 300 caribou on the island. Mature male reindeer weigh about 350 to 400 pounds and female 175 to 250 pounds. Reindeer are smaller than a main-land male caribou can reach weights to 500 to 700 pounds. Life span is 15 to 18 years. Interesting fact with reindeer, is that their eyes are gold in summer and change to blue in winter.

They seem to travel on low line flat areas and seem to avoid mountains and hilly terrain.

Judging reindeer isn’t difficult, just a few things I look for, double shovels, double bez, long and wide main beams, good mass, double back-scratchers, symmetry, and more than two points at the top.

Palmated points on top are best. Harvest limit for reindeer on Kodiak is 1 reindeer (caribou) per-person Aug 1st through January 31st.

n 1924 reindeer were brought to Lazy Bay on the south end of Kodiak Island as part of a U.S. Department of the Interior program that began in 1892 to bring reindeer into western Alaska from Siberia to provide native Alaskans additional commercial and subsistence opportunities.

The reindeer herd was managed by residents of Akhiok, under a contract with the U.S. Reindeer Service. The herd ranged in the Cape Alitak and Olga Lakes area, in tundra vegetation that provided the best reindeer habitat on Kodiak. In spite of various political and biological issues that arose with reindeer in other areas of the state, reindeer on Kodiak were thriving and reached a peak of about 3,000 animals by 1950. The herd declined in size following a catastrophic cabin fire in the early 1950s, which destroyed hundreds of acres of prime reindeer forage. The herd escaped during the fire, releasing an estimated 1,200 animals into the wild. After the fire, most herders did not attempt to reclaim the reindeer and took better paying jobs in the fishing industry.

Active management of the herd ended in 1961, although reindeer meat continued to be sold to the canneries and individual hunters were allowed to kill reindeer for $25 a head. In 1964 the federal grazing lease expired. The lease was never renewed and a certified letter from the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife (June 10, 1963) stated, “Any property that has not been removed from the leased area or disposed of on or before July 1, 1964 will become the property of the United States Government.” The reindeer were not removed and were declared feral by the State of Alaska the next year. During 1960– 2000, state and federal management of the herd was passive, neither attempting to sustain or eliminate them. By having no closed season or bag limit, all hunters, including former owners of the herd, could take as many animals as they wanted as long as they obtained a caribou harvest ticket before hunting, salvaged all the meat for human consumption, and did not hunt on the same day they had been flying.

During that time the herd settled into favored range along the Ayakulik and Sturgeon rivers and stabilized at about 250–350 animals. In 2002 the Alaska Board of Game authorized same-day-airborne hunting and the reported harvest of feral reindeer increased as lodges and transporters began marketing hunts.

• The board requested an out of sequence review with the Division. We currently have surplus funds.

The board has decided to wait till the next licensing year to look at reducing fees. A portion of the surplus will be used to pay for the upgraded online services program being conducted.

• The regulation that was passed December 2021 to implement a refresher questionnaire upon licensing renewal was found to be outside the purview of the board. We will look to make some adjustments to allow for this.

• Overhaul of the supervision statute. The board will convene between June and July to vote on changes to the supervision regulation. See the website for recommended language. We received good feedback for amendments to the proposed language during the March meeting.

• Conflicts in the field. Licensees are encouraged to look at Statute 08.54.720 and Ethics Regulation 12 AAC 75.340. The board is willing and ready to uphold these standards of professionalism.

• New licensing and renewal applicants. When in doubt, disclose any violations. If not, do not expect a timely application process, expect a board action and don’t say we didn’t warn you. Our licensees spend tens of thousands of dollars chasing these “failure to disclose” applications each year. GuideOutfitters are encouraged to micro-manage their assistant guides licensing and renewal applications before being submitted. Licensees are spending a lot of money in this area due to lack of attention.

NEWLY ADOPTED REGULATIONS • Caribou will be removed from species specific licensing.

• Transporter Sub-committee. We have an increased trend in Marine Transporter activity specifically in southeast Alaska and Kodiak. The board is considering many changes that will be addressed in December 2023. Look for discussions that will include transporter use areas, limiting marine transporter activity and increased regulation for safety mandates.

• LLC and Partnership Business Practices Subcommittee. They will attempt to clearly outline lawful practices and regulatory requirements.

• Limited Guide Use Area Registration. The board continues to work on a limited GUA registration through prospectus format for state land. Look for progress by the December meeting. If you are a state land concessionaire, you are encouraged to participate.

• Online Tools. We continue to press towards a more efficient means of administration for all licensees.

The process is slow but currently underway.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE THE KEY TO MOOSE HUNT SUCCESS

BY JERRY MENESES If you are going to hunt moose anywhere and especially in Alaska, then there is one question you must answer before pulling the trigger: “Where is it going to fall?” As a new hunter in New York chasing whitetails during college, that question never entered my mind. After I retired from the Army and settled out West, it crossed my mind once or twice, but I never dwelled on it. Where I hunted mule deer and elk, in Colorado and South Dakota, I had always been able to access my kills with a truck or ATV. But hunting in Alaska for moose is a “whole ‘nuther ball game.” An AlaskaYukon bull moose is easily double the weight of a bull elk. So, before you pull the trigger in the Alaskan backcountry, and it’s just you and your guide, ask yourself that critical question— “Where is it going to fall?”.

com) I booked a hunt for 2020. Unfortunately, that hunt was cancelled three days out due to Covid—the local village would not allow in any outsiders and wouldn’t even allow the outfitter, Virgil Umphenour, a long-time friend of the tribe into the village to buy gas which is the lifeblood of these river-based hunts. So, everything got pushed to 2021, and with Virgil’s help I was lucky enough to draw a 1 of 1 tag for hunt DM 823. We hunted upriver about 45 miles from the village of Huslia. I only knew where it was because my wife, Christine, is an avid watcher of the National Geographic show “Life Below Zero”—as an aside I met one of its main characters, Ricko DeWilde, who posed for a picture like we were old friends. We (there were 2 other hunters in camp that hunted another area off the Huslia River) stayed in comfortable canvas tents and used Allweld boats to move up and down the Koyukuk River to look for moose sign on the banks then move through the thick patches of willows near the bank to call for bull moose.

Alaska’s moose season typically runs September 1st through the 25th; non-residents get to hunt one of two 10-day periods in that window. This year it was either 3-14 Sep or 16-25 of September. Some people say that the latter half is better because its colder and the bulls are more likely to be in the height of the rut. My availability and Virgil’s recommendation led me to hunt the 1st season and all things considered I didn’t have any complaints.

The temperatures ran from the mid-30s at night to mid-50s during the afternoon and except for a near constant drizzle, that was fine weather to run up and down the river checking out spots where either my native guide, Alvin Attla, had harvested bulls before or where we saw fresh tracks of moose on the banks where they came to the river to drink.

We did that for the 1st three days with nothing to

show for it but a couple of brief bull sightings but no responses to our calling. Even with good gear the chilling drizzle got old fast. After 3 and half overcast days and a slow start to the rut, our luck changed and the clouds broke on the 4th afternoon.

That evening, about 7:30 PM, we tied the boat on the bank at a spot we had already visited three times.

Honestly, my hopes weren’t high that we would see anything, but I dutifully followed Alvin up the bank. We moved on a narrow game trail through a 50-yard-deep stand of willows, and we saw a cow almost immediately after we got into the long (about 1200 yards deep) grass lake. We inched along the right side of the narrow meadow (about 110 yards wide) and spotted another cow about 280 yards away on the left side of the meadow. We waited 20 minutes before Alvin started to grunt and rake the nearby willows. Immediately, we got a response from beyond the cow and a few minutes later a single paddle from a giant moose emerged from the willows about 400 yards out. After a few brief minutes the bull closed to 333 yards and proceeded to tear apart a willow stand--branches and leaves flew everywhere. He then “waddled” (he was so big he dipped his head from side-to-side as he walked) another 120+ yards to get between the cow and us. Alvin whispered, “I think he’ll go 70 inches.” It didn’t really sink in. I just knew the bull I was looking at dwarfed the three bulls I had seen so far—and he was still at least 200 yards away.

One of the strange things about moose camp is that no one is in a hurry to get going in the morning. I mean I’ve been in other elk or deer camps where everyone waits for a guide or motivated hunter to get up and get the stove and coffee going before venturing out of their sleeping bags, but this was different. No one got their gear on and headed for the boats until it was clearly daylight out. It’s obvious once you think about it but after getting dressed, having some coffee and pacing around until the sun broke over the horizon, I finally had to ask about what I thought of as a “distinct lack of motivation to start hunting.” “Its not safe in the water when its dark,” my guide told me. Then he related a story of how a local family heading back to the village after dark, hit a bull moose that was swimming across the river and all seven family members died. There was also driftwood to contend with. After the explanation I was no longer in a hurry to get going in the morning. Not to mention since the sun set after 9:30 PM, we would have plenty of daylight to find a moose.

I wanted to pull the trigger, but Alvin said he could call him in closer… “if not we can come back early tomorrow when he is sleepy.” There was no way I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I let Alvin take the lead and continue to call. The moose slowly crossed the meadow, to get downwind of us I think, and then hung up about 125 yards out. I had my 30-year-old Weatherby MK V in Wby 300 Mag perched on a walking stick ready for him to emerge from the willows when suddenly Alvin cow-called. Now, I’m not criticizing his calling, but the moose surely didn’t appreciate it. He grunted loudly and retreated 50-60 yards. Luckily, he presented one last shot opportunity. The bull walked back across the meadow (to our left) towards the cow presenting a broadside shot at about 190 yards. Just as I was about to pull the trigger Alvin blurted out, “don’t shoot yet... let him get to the yellow grass because he’s standing in water.” About 4 steps later he cleared the green grass... I aimed for the shoulder to anchor him in place…Boom! I chambered another round and got back on him just in time to… witness him fall! Even though the 180 grain Accubond hit a little father back, it shattered a rib (on both sides) sending parts of the jacket and bone splinters through both lungs and into his spine. The bull didn’t even take one more step and just as Alvin urged, he came to rest on dry ground. The bull measured 70.5 inches wide!! Fifty inches or four brow tines is the legal minimum for a nonresident to take a bull moose. Alvin has been guiding for 21 years and shot countless moose himself and he has only had one other client shoot one over 70”. After some quick pictures we gutted him and covered him in willow branches. It took us almost eight hours the next day to break him down and pack the meat and antlers the 500 or so yards to the boat. After the second moose hunt was over, I talked to Virgil and he told me that in 34 years of guiding and outfitting I was only his seventh hunter to take a bull over 70”. I was truly blessed with an experience and trophy of a lifetime. My only regret is that it all happened so fast I didn’t take any pictures while he was alive.

ALASKA ARMS RUGER RIFLE ACCESSORIES

BY PHIL SHOEMAKER Working and living on what most of America considers the far edge of civilization, Alaskans have become used to the difficulty of finding competent local experts in a majority of fields. That certainly fosters a sense of self reliance and independence but when specialized tools are required it usually requires one to order supplies from “outside” and all too often, even then, the products are not up to the rigors of remote Alaska.

This spring he has just introduced a new, all steel magazine extension for the popular Ruger MkII bolt action rifle. Commonly referred to as a “drop box” on expensive English rifles used for dangerous African game, they allow for additional ammunition to be carried loaded in the rifle’s magazine.

Tools, and especially the Rifles used by guides, are a prime example. They naturally need to be both rugged and reliable and, as a guide gains experience, they often acquire signature and useful modifications as well. One ubiquitous modification is some additional means of carrying extra ammunition; usually some sort of bag strapped on the butt of the stock.

The new Alaska Arms drop box magazine extension simply replaces the floorplate on the ubitquous Ruger MkII rifles and allows one additional round of any of the magnum calibers. They are highly popular with all of my guides !

Feature #2 We are a family of hunters. As a child, I was taught to cherish, value and respect the animals we hunt and the environment in which they live. It was an easy lesson. My family’s 40-acre homestead is situated within a designated wilderness, surrounded by a National Wildlife Refuge that adjoins Katmai National Park. I grew up sharing the wilderness with the wildest of living beings.

Summers, I ran barefoot through the tundra hunting small game with my bow, spent hours fishing the streams, and trapped during winters.

The hope and promise of a game-rich land first attracted my parents to the area. And the Bristol Bay region of the Alaskan Peninsula is nothing if not gamerich. With a host of species ranging from the world’s largest Brown Bears, herds of caribou to an abundant moose population, it was an ideal place for a young family to start a guiding business 35 years ago. But it’s

the wilderness that kept our family here. A healthy, fully intact ecosystem that has allowed us to live the majority of our years surviving, thriving and enjoying this place we call home.

Our ‘lodge’ is tiny. It consists of a 24x24 rustic main building my father built in 1987, along with a modest scattering of outbuildings constructed utilizing surplus World War 11 Jamesway arches. My parents still insist we paint everything “tundra brown” or “alder green” to better blend in with our surroundings. “We don’t want to stand out and be an eye-sore,” mom explained while covering our buildings in drab colors. When early, archaic home-solar panels came out, my father installed them on our roof. He later invested 20 years of research and experimentation into a tiny wind generator that produces the majority of our power.

PROTECTING BRISTOL BAY RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE LIVE

The desire to be small, sustainable, and conscientious has passed from my parents to my brother and me as we slowly begin taking on the family business. The interdependence of everything magnified out here; our reliance on the wildlife and wilderness amplified in such remote existence. But our understanding and appreciation for wild places are not shared by all. One prime example is the highly controversial proposed Pebble Mine.

of wastewater and would involve dams implicitly leaking toxic chemicals into surrounding waterways. Gambling that toxin-filled lakes sitting on porous soil in a seismically active area will never leak is a fool’s bet. Statistically, it is a certainty. What’s more is that an unintended consequence of the resource extraction involves intentional flooding of an area that reduces critical, seasonal forage—the very item which serves as sustenance for all the region’s herbivores.

Mining, like hunting, when done responsibly and sustainably, can greatly benefit our state. This country needs jobs and raw materials, an angle the Pebble Partnership isn’t afraid to exploit. But the problem is location and magnitude. The foreign-owned openpit mine has the makings to be the world’s largest and would sit at the headwaters of the most massive Sockeye salmon run on the planet. While it is well established that Pebble has the potential to irrevocably change the most valuable salmon fishery worldwide, what does that mean for hunters?

Along with having a rich and dependable food source, the Peninsula is also game-rich due to the millions of acres of undeveloped lands. One of the most significant threats to hunting is habitat destruction. While the environmental issues involve the entire food web, it’s to say nothing of the effects such infrastructure and booming human population would have on our game.

The infrastructure Pebble would build to operate would have devastating implications. One example is the proposed road, which would quickly and severely impact the bear population as it would go within 400 yards of McNeil River Bear Sanctuary. History demonstrates that once the infrastructure of roads is in place, they will be used by all, thus fragmenting habitat.

The Alaskan Peninsula is one of the world’s last great game fields primarily due to the seasonable accessibility to high caloric fish for Brown Bears. Salmon are the lifeblood of this area. Without them, the entire region’s ecosystem would slowly collapse. Even herbivores such as caribou and moose depend on salmon as the decomposing carcasses create an influx of nitrogen, enriching and fertilizing soil and vegetation surrounding the streams. A mine of this size expels billions of gallons

Lastly, the decline in rich hunting lands will reverberate through Alaska. Increased hunting pressure within the area will lead to the displacement of hunters and anglers and dramatically increase pressure throughout other parts of the state.

Environmental Generational Amnesia is the idea that what we perceive as pristine nature is in reality progressively degraded through the generations. Each generation thinks what they have now is the norm. But

we need not look back far to see wildlife and hunting changing just within the state of Alaska. Suppose we all woke up tomorrow and fastforwarded 100 years into the future in terms of development. In that case, I am sure many (at least hunters and nature lovers) would be appalled and horrified. But the slow progression of losing one small piece at a time of our rights, our lands and our natural resources slips by unnoticed.

Many hunters have thumbed through the book “Last of the Great Brown Bear Men” and thought, “I wish I could have experienced hunting then!” It documents what it was like to hunt the 49th state some 70 years ago with the famed Kodiak guide Bill Pinnell and Morris Talifson. But hunting opportunities throughout parts of populated Alaska, the lower 48 and Africa (to name just a few close to my heart) are quickly diminishing. Fortunately, the Alaskan Peninsula is not one of them. There is no need for habitat restoration or animal re-introduction programs. We don’t currently have a crisis affecting the largest remaining wild salmon run or the world’s densest Brown Bear population.

All we need is to retain what we have. But the irreversible damage and long-term environmental consequences the

proposed mine threatens would go beyond anything the world has seen and stands to jeopardize the heart of our hunting heritage.

There is a sticker my father placed on the fridge years ago. It is a Cree Indian prophecy that reads, “Only when the last tree has been cut down and the last fish has been caught and the last stream poisoned will we realize we cannot eat money.” And my father reminds us that there will always be jobs and money, but once the world’s natural treasures are exhausted, they are gone forever.

Hunting is a way of life for many Alaskans. One we must fight to preserve if we wish for future generations to experience the same opportunities we have. And while those of us opposing Pebble have made progress, our collective work cannot stop here. The battle to secure long-lasting, durable protection is not over. Now more than ever, we need to band together to let the current administration and Congress know the only way forward is to issue permanent protection for Bristol Bay.
