Chapter

My story starts when I was living in the place of pyramids called El Tajin (El Ta-hin).

It is near the vanilla-producing town of Papantla (Pa-pant-la) on the east coast of Mexico. I had been there for many months, since I became separated from my family.

Mi historia comienza cuando yo vivía en un lugar de pirámides llamado “El Tajin”.

Se encuentra cerca del pueblo de Papantla, un pueblo que produce vainilla, en la costa este de México. Había yo estado ahí muchos meses hasta que me encontré separada de mi familia.

Before that, I lived and traveled with Atayde (A-thai-de), Mexico’s oldest and most famous circus. Members of my family were all highwire artists. It was a good life and I was happy enough. But one day, for some reason, I just wandered away.

Antes de esto vivía y viajaba con el Circo Atayde, el circo más antiguo y famoso de México. Los miembros de mi familia eran trapecistas. Era una vida buena y yo estaba bastante feliz. Pero un día, por alguna razón, yo simplemente me fui.

When I finally found my way back to the circus, it was gone— all the animals, all the tents, all the trucks. . . even my family’s trailer house was gone. I guess they couldn’t wait any longer for one foolish puppy to return.

My life was soon more difficult. I became very sick. I hadn’t eaten for a long time. My hair started to fall out and I was dirty and smelly.

There were bugs living on me. . . it was maybe a flea circus. If I went near people, they would kick me or throw rocks at me.

Sometimes, women would hit me with their brooms. No one wanted to help me because I was ugly. And I was tired, so very tired.

Pronto mi vida se volvió muy difícil. Me enfermé seriamente. No había comido por algunos días.

Mi pelo empezó a caerse, estaba hambrienta y olía muy mal. ubo bichos viviendo en mi pelaje–¿quizá H era un circo de pulgas? Si me acercaba a la gente me pateaban o me aventaban piedras.

I had just dozed off one day, when a huge noise woke me. Usually El Tajin (El Ta-hin) is a quiet place. But on this particular day, the noise was deafening because six motorcycles had just arrived.

I watched the riders for a while and then I went back to sleep.

Un día apenas me había quedado dormida, cuando un ruido estremecedor me despertó. Generalmente El TAJIN es un lugar tranquilo. Pero aquel día especial el ruido era ensordecedor porque seis motocicletas acababan de llegar. Observé a los motociclistas por un instante y me volví a dormir.

When I awoke, I saw a woman sitting on the edge of a beautiful fountain. I moved towards her quietly and lay down between her feet.

When the woman glanced down, she was surprised to see me there. She reached out and touched me.

Cuando me desperté vi a una mujer sentada en la banqueta cercana. Tranquilamente me fui hacia ella y me acosté junto a sus pies. Cuando la mujer vio hacia abajo, se sorprendió al verme ahí. Extendió su mano y me tocó.

Oh, her touch was so gentle, so kind.

I had forgotten what it was like to be touched that way. And she smelled good. I was embarrassed because I smelled bad.

Oh, no ... no, no, no. She is moving. She is getting up and leaving me. Where is she going? Uh oh, she is approaching that man called Juan José. He is always mean to me. What is she doing? She’s buying a t-shirt from him. Then she opens the door to a bright orange car and places the t-shirt on the front passenger seat. How strange. She turns, looks at me, approaches and picks me up and places me gently on the t-shirt. How is one to believe this?

She gets in the driver’s seat next to me.

I don‘t move a muscle for fear that she will put me back on the street. Suddenly, I hear the motorcycles start their engines and, to my amazement, the woman puts down the book she is reading and we drive off in the orange car, following the motorcycles.

Oh no, no, no. Ella se está moviendo. Se está levantando y me está dejando. ¿A dónde irá? Oh, se está acercando al hombre llamado Juan José. Él siempre se comporta mal conmigo. ¿Qué está haciendo ella? Le está comprando una playera. En seguida ella abre la puerta de un coche anaranjado brillante y coloca la playera sobre el asiento del copiloto. ¡Qué extraño! La mujer se voltea, me mira, se acerca y me levanta y me coloca suavemente sobre la playera. ¿Cómo se puede creer esto?

Se coloca en el asiento del chofer junto a mí.

No muevo ni un músculo por temer que me vaya a regresar a la calle. De repente oigo a los motociclistas arrancar sus motocicletas y a mi gran asombro la mujer deja su libro que está leyendo y nos vamos en el coche anaranjado siguiendo a los motociclistas.

We travel for two hours in the orange car.

I sleep as it is pleasant being beside her, and I am exhausted. When the car stops, she opens the door.

I squint open one eye. I see that we are parked beside a roadside restaurant. A man approaches the car. He looks at me, then at the woman, and shakes his head.

Viajamos por dos horas en el coche anaranjado.

Yo duermo ya que es agradable estar junto a ella y estoy exhausta. Cuando el coche se detiene ella abre la puerta. Yo bizqueo abriendo un ojo. Veo que estamos estacionados junto a un restaurante al lado de la carretera. Un hombre se acerca al coche. Me mira, después mira a la mujer y mueve su cabeza de lado a lado.

“You are absolutely crazy,” he says.

“Who cares?” she replies, and walks quickly towards the restaurant.

I still don’t move a muscle. I can’t imagine what will happen next. Then, I’m wonderfully surprised. The woman returns with a plate of scrambled eggs and beans. She places the food next to me. I sit up and try to remember my manners. I take small bites, pausing politely between each one. You can’t imagine how good eggs can taste. I eat everything on that plate. I lick it clean. Then she offers me water. That tastes wonderful, too. Now I really need to sleep again. I curl up on the t-shirt, and within seconds, I am back in dreamland.

Aún no muevo un solo músculo. No puedo imaginar que va a suceder enseguida. Luego estoy maravillosamente sorprendida. La mujer regresa con un plato con huevos revueltos y frijoles.

Coloca el plato junto a mí. Me siento y trato de recordar mis buenos modales.

She must have driven four to five hours after lunch before we arrive in Xalapa (Ha-la-pa). I think we are going to spend the night here. I hope I can sleep in the car. But no, she lifts me out and stands me on the grass. I know what I am supposed to do. I do it quickly, watching her all the time.

“What a good puppy you are,” she says, patting me on the head.

I love her. I really love her. She walks away carrying Juan José’s t-shirt. I watch until she turns and calls to me.

“Come with me puppy,” she says. “Come with me.

You will sleep in my room.”

“Ven conmigo, cachorrita”, me dice. “Ven conmigo.

In my entire life, I have never slept in a room.

I’ve always guarded the trailer house when I was with the circus. I slept outside, under the steps, rain or shine.

En toda mi vida nunca había dormido en una habitación. Siempre había cuidado la casa sobre ruedas cuando estaba yo con el circo. Yo dormía afuera bajo las escaleras, estuviera lloviendo o no.

We enter a large bedroom. There are no other rooms, not even a kitchen. The woman places the t-shirt beside the bed.

“You can sleep here tonight,” she says, and leaves with the man who told her she was crazy.

They lock the door. I worry that they won’t return. I check out every smell in that room. Many people have slept here before and some dogs have also been here. I curl up on Juan José’s t-shirt and fall asleep. Later, the woman and the man return. We all sleep peacefully through the night.

Entramos a una amplia habitación. No hay otros cuartos, ni siquiera una cocina. La mujer coloca la playera junto a la cama.

“Puedes dormir aquí esta noche”, y se va con el hombre que le había dicho que estaba loca.

In the morning, I hear the man call the woman Karen.

That’s her name. His name is Robert. They leave again for a while, but when they return she brings me more scrambled eggs and beans. I drink some water, do my duty in the grass, and then the woman, I mean Karen, and I get back into the car. The man, that’s Robert, roars off on one of the motorcycles.

I am feeling much better today. We are driving again. To where? I don’t know.

I don’t care. I just want to be with Karen.

She has rolled the window down on my side of the car. I put my head outside and feel the wind on my face.

When I was with the circus, I always rode in the truck with the giraffes. They are very polite animals, giraffes.

Karen talks to me all the time as we speed along the highway. She sings. She also mentions something to me about a bath, but I don’t know what that is. I have never tasted one. But I’ll try it.

En la mañana oigo que el hombre llama a la mujer Karen.

Ese es su nombre. El nombre de él es Robert.

Salen por un rato pero cuando regresan traen más huevos revueltos y frijoles. Bebo un poco de agua, hago mis necesidades en el pasto y entonces la mujer, quiero decir Karen, y yo regresamos al coche. El hombre, Robert, sale con ruido estrepitoso en una de las motocicletas.

Me siento mucho mejor hoy. Estamos manejando de nuevo. ¿A dónde? No lo sé. Solo quiero estar con Karen. Ella ha bajado la ventana de mi lado del coche.

Saco la cabeza y siento el aire en mi cara.

Cuando estuve en el circo siempre viajaba en el camión de las jirafas.

Las jirafas son animales muy gentiles.

Karen habla conmigo todo el tiempo mientras andamos velozmente por la carretera. Ella canta. También menciona algo acerca de un baño - pero no sé a lo que se refiere. Nunca he probado uno.

We continue driving until noon, when we stop at another restaurant. Karen puts a collar around my neck and attaches a leash to it. Such a pretty red color. She must have bought it last night. She tries to bring me with her into the restaurant, but I don’t want to go. I know I’ll be kicked or hit with a broom.

Continuamos por la carretera hasta mediodía y paramos en un restaurante. Karen pone un collar alrededor de mi cuello y fija en él una correa. Es de un rojo muy hermoso. Debe de haberlo comprado anoche.

Ella trata de llevarme al restaurante pero no quiero entrar. Sé queme patearán y pegarán con una escoba.

“Come puppy, come puppy,” she insists.

“You’re safe with me.”

“Ven cachorro, ven cachorro”, ella insiste. “Estás a salvo conmigo”.

So I follow her inside, staying as close to her as possible. I lie down on the floor beside her and try to be invisible. Guess what? She gets me more eggs and beans. If I continue eating eggs, soon I’m going to lay an egg. While in the restaurant, though, I realize just how many people are traveling with us on this journey.

Karen stands up to speak to them. Hey, she is talking about me.

“The puppy, the puppy,” she keeps saying. “I am going to name the puppy Chica, because she is such a sweet little girl.”

In Spanish, you know, Chica means little girl. Everybody is clapping. People walk over, pat me on the head and speak to me.

“Hello, Chica. Welcome, Chica. You’re such a lucky dog, Chica.”

I have never had a name before.

I am so happy. I have never in my life been this happy.

“El cachorro, el cachorro”, dice repetidas veces, “Llamaré al cachorro CHICA porque es una muchachita muy dulce”.

En español, tú sabes, Chica significa muchachita. Todos empiezan a aplaudir. Las personas se acercan, me acarician la cabeza y hablan conmigo.

“Hola Chica, bienvenida Chica. Eres una perrita muy afortunada, Chica”.

Nunca antes tuve un nombre.

Estoy muy feliz. Nunca antes en mi vida había estado tan feliz.

Karen promises to give me the bath tonight before we go to bed. I can hardly wait. I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

We drive all afternoon and finally arrive at a place called Cuernavaca (Kwerna-va-ca). We sleep in another bedroom, but before going to sleep Karen gives me the bath. . .

El Baño The Bath Really, Karen didn’t give the bath to me; she gave me a bath. Big difference.

I have to be honest. I hated the bath. It’s not something to eat, you see.

Verdaderamente, Karen no me bañó, me dio un baño. Es una gran diferencia.

No. A bath is getting completely wet, as if you fell into a river.

Un baño significa mojarse totalmente, como si te hubieras caído a un río.

Then something called shampoo is rubbed into your fur until there are bubbles everywhere. The bubbles are rinsed away and rinsed away and then you are wrapped in a towel and rubbed dry.

I did kind of like the towel part.

But I hope I never have to have another bath.

Tengo que ser honesta. Odié el baño. No es algo que se pueda comer, como sabrás.

I have scrambled eggs for breakfast today. . . no beans. Karen and I get back into the car.

Robert joins his motorcycle friends, and we are traveling again. Sometimes I sleep. Sometimes I put my head out the window. Karen talks to me about Puerto Vallarta (Puer-to Va-yar-ta) and a place called Nebraska.

We stop to eat in Puebla (Pue-bla), and I am allowed in another restaurant. I am wearing my new red collar with the leash, of course. And I smell really good.

Hoy desayuno huevos revueltos. . . sin frijoles.

Karen y yo nos subimos al coche. Robert se va con sus amigos motociclistas y viajamos de nuevo. A veces me duermo. A veces saco la cabeza por la ventana. Karen me platica de un lugar llamado Puerto Vallarta y otro llamado Nebraska.

Nos detenemos en un lugar llamado Puebla y me permiten entrar a otro restaurante.

Estoy usando mi collar rojo con la correa naturalmente. Y huelo muy bien.

We travel all that afternoon until we arrive in Patzcuaro (Pats-kwah-ro). It was there that I saw the beautiful, yellow butterfly. It was huge. Karen was in love with that butterfly, so I tried to catch it for her. But

she kept saying, “No, Chica. No, Chica.” I finally gave up and the butterfly flew away.

Viajamos toda la tarde hasta que llegamos a Pátzcuaro.

Fue ahí donde vi la hermosa mariposa amarilla. Era enorme. Karen estaba encantada con esa mariposa, así que traté de atraparla para ella.

Pero ella me siguió diciendo: “No, Chica, no Chica”.

Finalmente me di por vencida y la mariposa se fue volando.

We sleep in another bedroom that night and in the morning I eat more scrambled eggs and beans. I don’t want to be ungrateful, but I’m getting a bit tired of eggs... and, of beans.

Today, we drive all day until we arrive in the large city of Colima (Co-lee-ma). Karen leaves Robert and me to shop. Robert says women like to go shopping. He says they’re always looking for something new. I don’t know anything about that sort of thing. But when Karen returns, she is carrying many packages and one of them is for me. It is a bag of food made especially for dogs. Can you believe that someone makes food just for dogs? Well, I want to tell you “dog-food” is delicious. Better even than eggs and beans.

I have more of that food for dogs in the morning. Then as we get into the car, Karen tells me that today will be our last day of driving. I have loved being with her in the orange car. What will we do if we are not in the car?

Hoy manejamos todo el día hasta llegar a una ciudad grande que se llama Colima. Karen nos deja a Robert y a mí para ir de compras. Robert dice que a las mujeres les gusta ir de compras. Él dice que siempre están buscando algo nuevo. Yo no sé nada acerca de esto. Cuando Karen regresa carga muchos paquetes y uno de ellos es para mí. Es una bolsa de comida especial para perros. ¿Puedes imaginarte eso? ¿Alguien haciendo comida solo para perros? Bien, te quiero decir que ‘Comida para Perros’ es deliciosa. Manejamos todo el día.

We drive all day.

Just before dark, the six motorcycles and the orange car, with me in it, of course, arrive in Puerto Vallarta. I can smell the ocean nearby, but we don’t go to the beach. Instead, we drive up a steep hill to a beautiful house. It is a large house, not just a bedroom, and it has walls on only two sides. It has a lush garden, where I do my duty. The house is really tall and we travel from floor to floor in what is called an elevator.

It’s a magic machine that only goes up and down. If you are tired, you don’t have to climb the stairs. There is a great-smelling kitchen and a gigantic table, where everyone eats. I later learn that Eugenia and Fernando prepare all the food and it’s delicious.

“Tomorrow,” Karen says, “we are going to visit a veterinarian. A veterinarian,” she explains, “is a special doctor just for animals.”

But I know that because the circus had a veterinarian. Karen says I need papers to enter a place called the United States.

Puedo oler el mar cerca pero no vamos a la playa. En cambio subimos manejando una loma empinada a una casa hermosa. Es una casa grande, no sólo tiene una habitación.

Tiene muros solamente de dos lados.

Tiene un jardín frondoso donde hago mis necesidades. La casa es excepcionalmente alta y subimos de piso en piso en algo llamado elevador. Es una máquina mágica que solo sube y baja. Si estás cansado no necesitas subir por las escaleras. Hay una cocina que huele muy bien y una mesa gigante donde todos se sientan a comer. Más tarde me entero que Eugenia y Fernando preparan toda la comida la cual es deliciosa.

“Mañana,” dice Karen, “vamos a visitar a un veterinario. Un veterinario,”ella explica, “es un doctor especial que sólo atiende animales.” Pero yo sé eso, porque el circo tenía uno. Karen me dice que necesito papeles para entrar a un lugar que se llama Estados Unidos.

Where is the United States? I don’t know, but I don’t want to go unless Karen goes with me.

After dinner, I see Karen throw away Juan José’s t-shirt. She lays a clean, soft, blue rug beside her bed.

“This is for you, Chica,” she says.

I lie on that sweet-smelling blue rug and sleep until morning.

After breakfast, Karen is busy packing bags. When she is finished, she calls me.

“Come, Chica, we must go see Dr. Ochoa

(Doc-tor O-cho-a) and get your papers. We are leaving for the United States and Nebraska today and you must have a rabies shot.”

I drive with Karen in the orange car to the doctor’s office. The doctor seems nice enough. He lifts me onto a high, stainless steel table. Hey, I really don’t like this slippery table one bit.

“Yikes. Ouch.” He bites me with some really sharp teeth. I turn around to bite him back, but Karen is holding my head. She gives me my first kiss ever, right on my nose.

¿Dónde están los Estados Unidos? No lo sé, pero yo no quiero ir a menos que Karen vaya conmigo. Después de la cena veo que Karen tira la playera de Juan José a la basura. Ella coloca un tapete limpio, suave y azul junto a su cama.

“Este es para ti, Chica”, dice ella.

Me acuesto sobre ese tapete azul que huele delicioso y me duermo hasta la siguiente mañana.

Después del desayuno Karen está ocupada empacando bolsas. Cuando termina me llama.

“Ven, Chica, debemos ir con el Dr. Ochoa para conseguir tus papeles. Vamos a los Estados Unidos y a Nebraska hoy y necesitas una vacuna contra la rabia”.

oy con Karen en el coche V anaranjado al consultorio del Dr. Ochoa. El doctor parece bastante agradable. Me coloca sobre una mesa alta de acero inoxidable.

Oye, no me gusta nada esa mesa resbalosa. “No, no, auuch” - me muerde con unos dientes verdaderamente filosos. Me volteo para morderlo, pero Karen me detiene la cabeza. Me da mi primer beso de mi vida, justo en mi nariz.

“I love you, Chica. What a beautiful, brave girl you are,” she says.

“Te quiero, Chica. ¡Qué niña tan hermosa y valiente eres!” dice ella.

I give her a kiss right back. But I don’t like that Dr. Ochoa (Doc-tor O-cho-a). Karen actually gives him money for biting me. I don’t understand that.

También le doy un beso. Pero no me gusta ese Dr. Ochoa. De hecho, Karen le da dinero por haberme mordido. No entiendo esto.

We return to the tall house, load all the bags that Karen packed into the back of the car and kiss Eugenia and Fernando goodbye. Robert gets into the car with us. We are now a threesome. We drive to the airport, where all the airplanes are parked. What happens next is hard to believe, but it’s true. We climb into an strange, apple- green airplane covered with brightly colored spots. Happily, the colors inside are more calming. Karen puts my blue rug on one of the seats and I jump up onto it. Karen sits across from me. Robert sits in front and gets ready to fly the plane. I’m not a bit nervous. Karen is with me.

Nothing can happen if she is here.

Robert lifts the airplane into the sky.

Yes, we are flying. We are flying. We are flying like a brightly, colored bird.

Regresamos a la casa alta, subimos a la cajuela del coche todas las bolsas que Karen empacó y besamos de despedida a Eugenia y a Fernando. Robert se sube al coche con nosotros. Ahora somos un trio. Manejamos al aeropuerto donde están todos los aviones estacionados. Lo que sucede ahora es difícil de creer, pero es cierto. Nos subimos a un estupendos avión de color verde manzana cubierto de círculos de colores vivos.

Afortunadamente los colores en el interior del avión son más tenues. Karen pone mi tapete azul en uno de los asientos y yo salto sobre el. Karen se sienta frente a mí.

Robert se sienta enfrente y se alista para volar el avión. No estoy nada nerviosa.

Karen está conmigo. Nada me puede pasar si ella está conmigo. Robert sube el avión hasta el cielo. Si, estamos volando. Estamos volando. Estamos volando como un pájaro de colores vivos.

GLOSSA RY Cover—Chica dressed as Frieda Kahlo.

Frieda Kahlo is seen by many as one of Mexico’s best artists. Having survived polio as a child and a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo captured physical pain and transformed it into deeply personal, introspective paintings. In many of her paintings she included herself as the main subject. Not to draw praise for herself, but to share her struggles with others.

Through her expressive, colorful clothing, Kahlo rose above her physical ailments and expressed her personal love of life through her clothes.

She defied many female fashion stereotypes by being herself and never conforming to the standard women’s clothing of the day. By blending traditional Mexican styles with her own imaginative tastes, Kahlo exemplified her inner joy and creativity through her fashion.

Over a thousand years ago the pyramids of El Tajín were thriving with activity. The most ornate building at the El Tajín complex is the Pyramid of the Niches. Believed to be built around the year 800 CE, this monumental structure contains 365 seperate Niches, or small, open rooms. These rooms were most likely related to the solar calendar and used for ceremonial purposes. Today the complex at El Tajín has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a monumental marker of pre-hispanic culture in Mexico.

The Circo Atayde, was one of the longest, continually running circuses in the world. Founded in 1888 in Mazatlan, the circus grew over time to incorporate high-wire acts, acrobats, and of course, clowns. In addition to the many human performers, Circo Atayde included performances with ponies, elephants, and tigers, just to name a few.

These colossal heads have dotted the Mexican Landscape for millennia.

The heads were built by the Olmec people and are believed to depict Olmec rulers. Seventeen of these head sculptures have been discovered to date and most of them date back to over three thousand years ago. The heads range in size from about five feet high to over eleven feet high and weigh thousands of pounds a piece.

The Aztec people were from a variety of ethnic groups in and around central Mexico in the early 1200’s. Over time, alliances were formed among different cultural groups and the Aztec Empire was born. This empire dominated much of Mesoamerica from the early 1300’s till the early 1500’s when Spanish explorers overthrew the empire, marking the end of the final great Mesoamerican empire.

This ceramic dog sculpture is often referred to as a “Colima Dog”.

Originally found in tombs in western Mexico, these sculptures are believed to have been given as burial offerings to help the deceased in the afterlife.

GLOSARIO Cubierta—Chica vestida como Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo es considerada por muchos como una de las mejores artistas de México. Habiendo sufrido poliomielitis de niña y un accidente de tranvía en su adolescencia, Frida Kahlo capturó el dolor físico y lo transformó en pinturas profundamente personales e introspectivas. En muchas de sus pinturas se incluye a ella misma como tema principal, no para llamar la atención sino para compartir su lucha personal con otros.

A través de su expresivo y colorido vestuario Frida Kahlo sobrevino su padecimiento físico y expresó su amor personal a la vida a través de su ropa. Ella desafío a muchos estereotipos femeninos de moda al ser ella misma y nunca conformándose con la moda femenina del momento. Al mezclar estilos mexicanos tradicionales con su propio gusto imaginativo, Frida Kahlo manifestó su alegría interior y su creatividad a través de su moda.

Chica frente a una de las pirámides de El Trajín. Hace más de mil años hubo mucha actividad en las pirámides de El Trajín. El edificio más adornado del complejo de El Trajín es la Pirámide de los Nichos. Se cree que fue construida alrededor del año 800d.C. Esta estructura monumental consta de más de 365 nichos separados o cuartos pequeños abiertos. Estos cuartos se relacionaron probablemente con el calendario solar y fueron usados para propósitos ceremoniales. Hoy en día el conjunto de El Trajín ha sido conservado y nombrado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO y sirve como marca monumental de la cultura prehispánica de México.

Además de los muchos actores humanos el Circo Atayde incluyó funciones de elefantes, tigres y caballos enanos solo para mencionar algunos.

Estas cabezas gigantes cubrían parte del paisaje mexicano por cientos de años. Las cabezas fueron esculpidas por los Olmecas y representaban gobernantes. 17 de estas cabezas han sido descubiertas hasta la fecha y tienen más de 3000 años. Estas cabezas miden de 2 a casi 4 metros de altura y pesan varias toneladas.

Los aztecas eran gente de varios grupos étnicos que llegaron a poblar la parte central de México. Con el paso de los años formaron alianzas con otros grupos de diferentes culturas y así nació el Imperio Azteca. Este imperio dominò gran parte de MesoAmérica entre los siglos 14 y 16 d.C. cuando los exploradores españoles vencieron a los aztecas, dando así fin al gran Imperio Mesoamericano.

A esta escultura de perro de cerámica se le conoce como 'Perro Colima'.

Originalmente fue encontrado en tumbas en el oeste de México y se cree que fueron ofrendas para acompañar al difunto en su vida de ultratumba.
