01.KUZUBAĞ WINERY -REFLECTION
OF SITE- type: place: status: winery fabrication visitor centre design çal/ denizli constracted landscape design
This exquisite estate is encompassed by breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views, surrounded by vineyards that encircle the property. The gentle undulations of the landscape offer a vantage point from which you can almost observe the entire estate at once. The design of the Produce and Visitor Centre was carefully planned to seamlessly integrate with the natural surroundings. During the planning process, we identified the various minerals present in and around the location, and we were able to utilize these natural elements, including soil, rocks, and water, to enhance the overall aesthetic. The design concept drew inspiration from the diverse textures available in the area, and we made efficient use of the dynamic movements of water. By envisioning each contour of the estate’s topography as if it had been shaped by these water channels, we incorporated clean lines and precise shapes into the design. Path to the Vineyard - The Cypress Road connects us to the entrance. The tectonic topography we created between the entrance, courtyard, amphitheater, and terrace is an architectural landscape pattern that allows access to the architectural structure. The combination of earth, concrete, and the artificial topography created by earth-like transformation of concrete permeates all the structural surfaces, offering a new form of existence. The designed landscape has now become integrated with this geography. The courtyard is a manifestation of the return to the earth, with the unique texture of light and a single tree.

The word ‘Çal’ actually means ‘Stony ground, bare hill, calcareous soil’. In our design process, we thoroughly investigated the connection between plants, soils, and rocks, and incorporated them into our architectural project. The topography of the area gradually unfolds itself to those who explore it, offering a unique and captivating experience.

Çal also embraces its natural morphology. By examining the town’s map, one can easily notice distinct patterns and areas within the town. The dynamic movement of water through the canals and canyons is one of the defining features of the city. The name “Çal,” which means “High place” or “Plateau,” was given to the district due to its elevated and naturally advantageous location.

The project ‘Aqua’ challenges the conventional notion of being confined to small spaces within and around the hotel during short-stay breaks. Instead, it offers a unique experience where guests, especially children, can enjoy the open air and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the Mediterranean nature. Originally, the client requested a design for a new aquapark to replace the existing one near the hotel. However, the design approach aimed to move away from the typical kitschy images associated with aquaparks. With the client’s support, the project area was expanded to include the adjacent area with large pine trees, in addition to the existing family pool area.

Starting from the initial proposal of the structural elements and extending to the site plan, our main goal was to create a sense of fluidity between the various spaces. Specifically for children, we designed unique activities and programs within the water area, allowing them to engage with different forms of water. From an architectural perspective, the “Kids Club” is divided into two distinct components. Firstly, we designed concrete shells to encourage extended play activities. Secondly, we constructed wooden cassette structures that offer a more open-ended and free play experience. These lightweight concrete structures were intentionally kept small in height and scale to blend harmoniously with the existing pine trees and the semi-open and open environment surrounding them.

03.VOYAGE TORBA HOTEL -RECONCILING WITH THE TOWN-
The project is situated in the town of Torba in Bodrum, a place currently experiencing a convergence of tourism, construction, and increasing rental pressures. Torba primarily consists of two-story detached structures with a few boutique hotels, the largest being the ‘Voyage Torba’ hotel. The project area is divided into five different regions, each evaluated based on its specific needs and requirements. The design of the project is heavily influenced by the local architectural style, which typically incorporates open, semi-open, and indoor plans to accommodate the Aegean and Mediterranean climates. The town is characterized by narrow streets and street niches that contribute to its unique identity. The integration of local buildings within the streets has a somewhat random nature. The project was carried out in two phases over a span of two years. Each phase, involving demolition, rough construction landscaping, finalizing the ground layers, and making them suitable for guests, took approximately five and a half months to complete. Construction management was executed through detailed drawings and regular site visits. One of the significant challenges we faced was preparing the landscaping elements to visually appeal to guests within the limited timeframe available.

04.MÜZE GAZHANE (GASWORKS MUSEUM)
Hasanpaşa Gasworks, located in Kadıköy on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, was a significant industrial complex comprising production equipment, storage facilities, and service buildings. After the factory ceased operations in 1993, the site was abandoned and fell into a state of disrepair. However, in recent times, Hasanpaşa Gasworks has gained recognition as one of the most important industrial heritage sites in Istanbul, with its founding dating back to the late 19th century.
The dilapidated industrial structures of Hasanpaşa Gasworks were meticulously restored and repurposed through a collaborative effort involving DS Architecture, ITU (Istanbul Technical University), and the neighborhood association. This project stands as a pioneering example of a multi-disciplinary and multi-actor process in Turkey. The primary aim was to transform the site into a cultural hub for the entire metropolitan Istanbul area. With a vast expanse of 32,000 square meters, the complex now accommodates a diverse range of functions. These include exhibition halls, a climate museum, a comics museum, a library, a bookshop, workshops, a study hall, cafeterias, a market, and three gas holders that have been adapted for various uses.

In total, twenty of the structures were re-functionalized, while the two non-existing gasometers were visually rebuilt with contemporary materials to preserve the spatial integrity of the original project area.

Since 2019, when I was included in the project, the focus had been on ‘Ga and Gb’ buildings, which are non-existing and re-functioned gas holders, respectively. A theatre is located in Ga whose upper is sky garden while Gb includes a theatre for kids and an art gallery on its top floor.

05.LAGOON BARUT LARA HOTEL
Lara Hotel, located in Antalya, has several charming buildings as well as a swimming pool area. Originally built in the 1990s, the hotel featured modern and innovative structures and a medium-sized swimming pool area providing ample space. Our aim was to offer new and unique experiences to customers, so we developed a design where we increased the new water surface and activities that allow hotel guests to fully enjoy the water are To achieve this, we developed a plan to remove the old concrete flooring surrounding the existing pool areas. In our new design, each ground floor hotel room was conveniently located adjacent to the swimming pool area, allowing guests to easily access the pool directly from their rooms. from our design plan.
At the heart of the pool area, we created a spacious ‘island’ public space for all hotel guests to enjoy. This area includes a shallow pool for children and other necessary amenities such as mixed changing rooms, showers, and sun loungers. Previously unused areas between individual buildings have been transformed into common spaces accessible to all hotel guests. In close proximity to the pool, we have designed a new bar that adds to the elevated experience for our guests. Our aim is to create a delightful and immersive atmosphere where guests can relax and enjoy their time. To enhance the overall ambiance, we have incorporated a diverse array of Mediterranean plants throughout the entire pool complex. These plants bring a natural beauty and contribute to a more serene and inviting environment. This design detail can be seen in our carefully crafted design layout.

Belek is located approximately an hour’s drive from the center of Antalya, which is widely recognized as a popular tourist city. It is renowned for its beautiful long beach and uninterrupted sea views. Maxx Royal Belek is a golf hotel situated in one of the largest green areas in Antalya. Our goal was to seamlessly integrate the existing pine tree zone with the beach site through a well-designed landscape. Considering the limited project area and the density of the program, we strategically reorganized the overall spatial structure of the garden. By dividing our main design into components, we aimed to optimize space usage and enhance the overall experience.

The existing zone with family suites was replaced by the Lagoon area, the most important part of this design. This zone contrıbute a special character and unique conditions into the general design area. We developed a massive pool in which floating rooms and various-sized isles are placed. These islands, consisting of drainage channels and plant pots, are positioned towards the center of the pool. Moreover, the calculations of the drain channels, i.e. the required mass flow rates of the water, were made in collaboration with pool consultants, especially in this zone of the design.

‘Maslak Square’ project is an urban reference office project located in Maslak, Istanbul, with an A+ quality standard, a Green building certificate, consisting of a total construction area of 81,800 m2. The building adapts to the existing topography. With continuous further development within the region, it will strengthen its “central” position and contribute to city life as an urban object. The project landscape area and that of the passage area located within the middle of the two blocks are designed as public spaces. The key idea was to create an open and light spacial green environmental area on a human-scale that is integrated in its form and rhythm into the existing height and scale of the buildings. The landscape design was highly demanding, since most of it is built on the roof of the carpark. This demanded extremely careful planning and co-operation between the designers.

09.ZONGULDAK PORT AREA -PROJECT AREA 2-

In the mining area of Zonguldak, a city situated on the Black Sea coast with a prominent port, there has always been evidence of fertile soil. The port area historically thrived due to abundant coal deposits, which were supported by a well-established railway infrastructure. The city also boasts fertile forestry and agricultural areas. The morphology of the city is defined by streams that run parallel to the railway and eventually flow into the Black Sea.
Unfortunately, over time, Zonguldak Port, once a vital transportation hub for coal, underwent a decline and became a deteriorated and neglected area. The disuse of this historically significant port by the public served as a clear indication that the area required urgent transformation. The primary objective of this project was to reintegrate the people of Zonguldak with the coastal area, fostering a renewed connection and revitalizing the region.

The nature zone is organized as a green valley with flowing water streams down the slope and circulation paths that wander through the landscape.
The human circulation is enriched with different lengths of equestrian routes that connect to the manege area, providing the residents a chance of nature walks with the horses. Various extension nods on the circulation lines become different activity zones.
Descending from the ‘Quarter Zone’, the users have a spectrum of alternative routes downslope, including a zipline that’s going over the dense tree canopy layer.
The middle of the nature zone is characterized as an adventurous ground consisting of kids’ adventure fields, climbing areas, the zipline and other various play fields. A number of resting areas, wellbeing and relaxing gardens are defined along the circulation paths for the residents who want to slow down their exploratory journey.
The naturalistic formations as the wetland areas generate a diversity of native species and attracts birds. Bird observation towers are located on the surrounding hills to allow users a peak through the ecological cycles of the area. The horse tracks connect to the equestrian area where it is enhanced with productive gardens, fulfilling a farm image.

10.RAMS UZEL RESIDENTIAL&COMMERCIAL URBAN DESIGN
The project is situated in the premises of the old Uzel factory. The project site encompasses a diverse range of programs, including educational facilities, a public park, a conference building, retail spaces, and residential units. The design proposes two separate building blocks to create smaller, interconnected blocks, with two courtyards at their center.

The layout of the buildings allows for continuous pedestrian circulation between the courtyards and the public park, fostering a sense of connectivity. To ensure privacy, the residential blocks are strategically rotated. The ground floors are designated for retail use, while the upper floors are designed for residential purposes. Inner semi-private gardens are thoughtfully designed to cater to the residents of the project, providing serene spaces for relaxation and recreation.
