MACRO OVERVIEW:

Sharjah

RESIDENTIAL REBIRTH IN AL RAS: Deira has been one of the oldest commercial centers in Dubai. This embodiment of trade and culture has been bored by the persian gulf, Sharjah and Dubai Creek. However in the recent years, Deira has been loosing its importance as it has become the land of the low wage income group and earning class where the livability have become substandard.

This is mainly due to the development along the Sheikh Zayed Road and areas down the coast towards Abu Dhabi.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT : From the maps we can understand that deira exisiting before had a lot of green spaces. Over time due to urbanization and the increament in the density of the population in relation to urban gentrification, the low income individuals got discplaced into the hosuing units that was focused on money and substandard livability.

Another takeway would be the evolutioin of the creek and the usage of the abras. Its noticed that back then people used to have hand carriages as there wasnt much cars and the primary source of movement were in fact the abras. Moving forward in time, there are a lot more cars, hence there isnt enough space to move around the due to the substantial increase in traffic, hence they still use hand carriages.

POPULATION DENSITY: Initally the the analysis was done by dividing Deira into various sector to try and understand the communities and the denisity growth over time.

Then in the next stage of the analysis the highest population density sectors was chosen and then inference was driven that most people would be living around that sector as the demographic chosen does not own cars so the accomodation of the working class was close by so they can go for their work on foot.

Since the popoulation density of these areas were substantially high and the land area covered by these sectors were significantly small especially with Al Dhagaya and Ayal Nasir, it was pretty evident that these places contained the most amount of accomodation with alot of bed spaces with 6-7 people living in a studio flat.

The Creek

From the mass and void diagramas, we can sort of understand the underlying the pattern that cramped and tightly packed city of Al Ras opens up closer towards our site.

The amphorphous texture of the city has no underlying grid with buildings concocted to accomodate as many bachelors as possible under substandard living conditions. From the dense urban fabric the site opened up to these beautiful alley ways which represented some of the urban pores that were identitfied.

CONNECTED PORE SPACES

The Idealogy of urban Pores were through the inbetween spaces presented by the sikhas. Primarily Pore spaces are something which donot connect two intangible masses. However, within the aura of Al Ras, alot of people make use of these sikhas.

It could be used for functional reasons or non functional reasons such as easier routes for potters or for resting in between a hot day at work.

Hence the utilization of this “inbetween” was quite interesting.

MICRO SITE KEY FINDINGS :

MOSQUE FACING EACH OTHER: The two Mosques facing each other attracts a lot of residents along the hub of Al Ras. This probably suggests that the direction towards the NW has a lot of potential to create a functional magnet to lure these Demographics into the project

VISUAL CORRIDOR ON THE CREEK: Standing at the site itself, It was observed that the visual corriodor on the Creek was lost. This was mainly due to the fact that the banyas road towards the SW side is at higher level blocking the visual corridor

EXIT OF THE SPICE SOUQ: The natural aura has seamless end to the SE direction of the given site. This suggests that their could an extention of the souq into the site itself.

DOWNSIDES OF DEIRA ENRICHMENT PROJECT : The key findings from the Deira Enrichment Project that they have mainly focused on is that to provide the of Deira with Seamless connectivity and production of urban gentrification.

They provide with 700+ shops, 2200 residential units, 10+ community plazas.

However while planning with the urban gentrification they never took the demographic into account as most of these people wont be able to afford these multistory dueplex and luxuary flats. The average cost of a 1 BHK flat is around 70000 dhs, however the working classes monthly salary is around 30004000dhs.

Hence they continue to choose to live in substandard live conditions in bedspaces.

Hence with Urban Gentrification comes to power to displace low-income individuals

Morning: 7-10 am

The Nodal points extends to three main regions within the site. Another key inference taken during the site survey when conducted was the constant urge for parking.

This was a important factor to be considered as many of the existing residents had constant complains about the inavailability to get a parking space within the hub of Al Ras

Afternoon: 12-3 pm

PHYSICAL 1:500 MODEL SHADED SIKHA From the Shadow Analysis it was pretty evident that the Sikha gets most he shade during the time.

Hence forth it would also lead to identitiying as a good seating place for the residents to use.

OPEN SHOP DISPLAY: The housing project can also be embedded with an open shop display, this can be done possible by creating a large storage green house space where it creates an oppertunity to the residents to sell various groceries ranging from vegetables, fruits, diary products. This creates an additional ideology of pluralism where two different demographics comes together in a co-housing project using the power of economics or bussiness.

CREATING AN ECOSYTEM RATHER THAN A LANDMARK

COMMUNITY DINING: Food is something these two widely distinguished demographics suffers from as the present living conditions in their existing bed spacesissubstandard. Henceforth dinning together to exerciese the idealogy of pluralism, creates an aura of self sustaining using the methods of economic sustainablity presenting opertunities to earn money for the ones cooking the various meals and ones running the marketing.

The schedule however can take turns between these 100 residents.

Iteration 1 failed as there was no relationship to the existing sikha, rendering the sikha into a dark alley pit.

ITERATION 2:

RAISED DECK: Platform was raised to extend the souq to facilitate parking

COMMUNITY DINING WITH A VISUAL CORRIDOR: The community dinning was raised up a level to respect the creek view.

RAMP TO THE CREEK: Ramp runs along the food spine to move the people towards the raised community dining.

5M COURTYARD: A 5x5 m Grid was then placed across to subtract the courtyard spaces along the south western winds.

SKEWED MASSING : The masses was then skewed towards the North eastern direction to enhance the creek view.

POROUS BALCONY : The transitional space between the 3 masses tunrs into an outdoor space relating to the urban porous.

COURTYARD SKEWED: The courtyards were then skewd around to channel the south western winds into the project.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION: The middle block was fixed to be the vertical circulation.

STAGERRED TOWARDS ON TOP: The masses was then staggered on the top to create more balcony spaces which become a place where two pods would share a common balcony.

CONNECTING THE BALCONIES : The pods facing across each other would share a common balcony where its a multifunctional terrace space such laundromat drying spaces, shared public areas. etc.
