A Kettle Prime As the bass player for A Kettle Prime, I got to experience more than I could have ever imagined. The four of us became very close, both as musicians, and as friends. The audio recordings, the videos, and the photos all help bring back fantastic AKP memories. We shared moments, on stage, and in rehearsal locations, that no one else will ever fully understand. A band of brothers that quickly rose to popularity in Maui, and got to travel as a band to the worlds largest music showcasing festival in the world. “Tall Tim Rausch

A Kettle Prime Maui’s Original Psychedelic Rock Based Jam Band The band A Kettle Prime - known fondly by their many fans as AKP - formed in the summer of 2007 each member bringing with them the unique experience of previous bands. In the short period of time between then and now, the band has had a major impact on the local Maui music scene with its truly diverse and original sound. A Kettle Prime transcends the pop mainstream and normal island reggae feel to invigorate their crowd with crafty compositions and lingering note play reminiscent of today's hottest jam bands. Whether psychedelic or trance, soaring melodies or in full momentum it seems obvious that A Kettle Prime is rising. The band cloaks metaphorically driven lyrics that reach into our daily lives with a thunderous assault; delicately balancing between subtle and melodic to furious and chaotic. This produces the sound where the band truly thrives. A sound that is saturated with honesty and dripping with irony. Whether the band is playing a haunting or melodic version of the same song, they have evolved and in turn the audience has evolved with them. "Both musically and lyrically we are always reaching inside for more, leaving everything out so that everyone else can peek in." Discussing anything from subconscious vs. conscious thought to current political or social issues, A Kettle Prime has arrived with a fresh sound that is bold and fearless. Thank you to Gina, Jessica, Miryeha, our families, and our loved ones who where there for us every day with love and support. We know it wasn’t always easy, and we will always be grateful to you!
The first flyers, the two official logos, & first practice location - Jonas’s Garage. After being kicked out of the garage by the neighborhood, AKP practiced at the local VFW, where they weren’t exactly welcomed either...
First AKP public appearances - Lake, Tim and Peter at the Dog & Duck, with Todd on hand drums. The beginning of a great fan base, and the band that brought everyone together!
A Kettle Prime playing Charley’s in Paia.
Frontman Lake McLain - Lead Guitarist and Lead Vocals - Writing both lyrics and music for the majority of the songs AKP played. The great story teller of A Kettle Prime.
Jonas Troxell on Drums, the backbone, and driving seat for so many of A Kettle Prime’s extended jams. Jonas spoke to the band with drum hits, creating crescendos and decrescendos, or changing directions in songs.
“Tall” Tim Rausch on Bass Guitar and Vocals - cementing together the rhythm sections that allowed AKP to thrive as well as the creative force behind all of AKP’s advertisements and visual stimulus for live shows.
Peter Hamilton, AKA “Petr - On Keyboards, the MOOG, Guitar, and Backing Vocals. The Missing Link - Peter filled in the gaps with the ability to switch instruments, and provide the layering for AKP.
Kalama Park Gazebo - AKP’s public out door practice area, and a great way of gaining new fans.
A Kettle Prime at The Sports Page in Kihei - Just what sports fans want during the game, some loud psychedelic jam band starting off, still learning their songs, still finding their own unique sound...

Rolling At Mission Canyon and Seven Falls The lizard is my friend As I look for my kind he cools his belly skin Sunsets will begin to fade as the reds And yellows turn back from day And I will know I’m there and feeling We’ll be rolling, rolling back home to you We’ll be flying, and I can look down On each one of you And smile at all of you I feel the fire in my feet to dance Its about time for a new sound So show me your belly skin I see the heads bobbing up To the beat that you are riding Like a wave of sound we will ride On our backs our life we keep holding? And we’ll be rolling, rolling back home to you And we’ll be flying and I can see each one of you Let’s keep rolling, rolling along to see you….. * First Verse Written by Phil Cothran
Soul Our eyes are smoked, sullied Blurred by what you’ve seen tonight Devil you quit walking In my blue suede shoes Down the backstairs you climb Finding a way to say your fine Off to the bathroom baby Maybe 30 minutes less time Cause you don’t know where you’re going And you don’t know where you’ve been They can take your life Might take your freedom But they can’t take……..your soul
AKP’s first Lahaina gig at The Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar included missing gear and Shaka Doug’s Party Bus breaking down. John Shappell filled up his VW and got the crew up to Lahiana and back safely!
Mulligan’s On The Blue, in Wailea, always seemed like home turf. Not to mention playing St. Patty’s Day, and New Year’s Eve Night! One night with AKP’s friend Andrew “Bear” Hunter on harmonica.

Cypher Dark Clouds are sinking low in the West But the moon creeps up so slow The Rivers they twine with the sky to see the heavens down below I can see it shining in the glaze of your eyes A million bloodshot wanderers seeking solace in the night Better run and hide soon… The hunt is on for your little soul my child The wine is so sweet to taste, yes, my friend it will sour down in your veins As you reach out for one more laughter, a stranger has come to say Run to the hills boy, evil’s on its way I’ll see you on the other side, unless we live through today Cause the hunt is on for your little soul my child The hunt is on for your little soul my child Fabled Gods at the Lake— “Better (So) tuck your children in a little tighter here tonight, Blood drips off the rooftops onto their window sills outside ‘cause the devil he is riding. In the distance, I could hear you screaming, I could hear you, I could hear you and you are where? Heavens where the souls scream… Heavens where the souls scream, To let us all back in, yes He’ll creep up on you like a whisper in the dark.
Burn Road The rattlesnake quivers and blows the horn Clowns sit by and ‘wait’ ask for more Nasty bears the name of the beat Stretch yourself too thin Bass will bump you back again To the place where you came from Ohhhh Burn your own road Go down burn road Sit there and scratch your head Wait too long and you’ll be dead That’s not how we roll We’ve burned it at every end Won’t look back to say that we didn’t burn our road Wild are the people who play tonight Dance and cheer and unite We play to mend our souls We’ve played to empty parking lots Talked to god underneath the stars Would you like to hear It won’t be long until the end By grace, we will shine again We all have to eat our groul We tasted the limelight Daddy wasn’t home tonight The chaos that has ensued stars shot out one night 4 One came home to play tonight Together we found a (our) home We’ll play on until the end When it comes let us ring out again Let us burn down that road Ohhhh burn your own road Go down burn road
Eliza It’s been such a long time Since I’ve been away So many things to tell you But now its too late I’m just a sad story Written by fabled Gods One who is laughing And one who saw a sad start I want you to know I can see you cryin’ Tears fall in the morning This song’s for Eliza Starry eyes lay upon me In this shackled down cell I’ve thought about my mistakes And all the time long gone All the broken whiskey bottles All the burns and scratches on your arms Why did I give up Why did I fall? I want you to know Your face still haunts me Its because of you…no Its because of me Can you feel my footsteps Down the hall with a door at the end Other side is my future One God is laughing again Please forgive me For all my sins (At least I’ll see you one time again) (A little girl in a yellow dress never to play again) Sometimes I’ll see her Shining down through the clouds on a rainy day She looks down smiling This song’s for….
All Right Now I’ll see you on the mountain having a good time Sitting in those chairs all alive with a liquid smile Now Barb is wondering how to score the nightly ride Soaking in the sun we’re having a good time…well alright Cause I want to ride tonight Cause I’m feeling alright I want to do it one more time Won’t you join me tonight We went down the road, we went to Telluride Charlie did it for the first time and he did the whole line Santos was there he was right by my side Charlie and his own demons we laughed until we cried… well alright I want to ride tonight Cause I’m feeling alright I want to do it one more time Will you join me tonight I hope you know where your friends are You’ve had a good time Hope you know where your friends are You’ve had a good night I’ll see you on the mountain alive with a liquid smile My friends are right here and we’re having a good time well alright I want to ride tonight Cause I’m feeling alright I want to do it one more time Will you join me tonight

A Kettle Prime’s official live CD from Mulligan’s, entitled “Walk On Down, Feel The Poison.”
Walk on Down, Feel the Poison Walk on Down, Walk on Down, Feel the Poison Hail Hail to the chief I can’t help but listen My Brain is soft with the seeds That you’ve been growing I think in my mind A little bit of the strange kind It’s hard to hear myself thinking My thoughts are dreams Dreams are Visions TV the master voice underneath the radio listening Come on down, Feel the Poison Do you see bones wrapped in skinNo one to let them in Can you see the stars shining, Don’t you wish you were one of them? I can hear the phone ringing, But I don’t know whose listening And a snake has bitten us with a painful poison
I Am Sorry I am sorry I must be going Down that road It leads somewhere Forgive me If I have wronged you I’m just a man Just like you Do we see that Or are we blinded Always to walk A path alone I am sorry If I ever upset you Never my intention It was all my fault It’s just the passion That fuels the fire And it burns In everyone’s soul Just forgive me As I forgive you And let’s all walk Down the road I am sorry If I hurt you I know I’ve hurt More than just myself But that is ok now It’s all behind you Only sunshine Shines for you I am sorry I must be going Down the road It leads somewhere Just forgive me As I forgive you And let’s all walk Down the road

“What I admire most about AKP is their willingness to explore songwriting. They don’t write within any kind of constraint imposed by any genre, and it’s refreshing. They follow their ideas where they naturally feel like they want to go, o matter which band member is writing. Very Cool.” - Erin Smith of The Throwdowns
Lost Blank Stares ,empty faces I’ve seen those before Twisted greetings and shallow hellos Deck the halls that are screaming Away we wander Into the stillness of the night Sharing a burden we all must bear But, there is a light in your dreams tonight Round we all go but we never slow down Round we go but we won’t get lost again Won’t get lost again! I spit on my hands To wash the mud away from my eyes Get back on my feet again To see who kicked me down this time you may run to the hills you can run far away run to the edge of the earth dear kin but you cannot escape me Round we all go but we never slow down Round we go but we won’t get lost again Won’t get lost again!
Hypothetical Sunshine Roads are frozen glass Widely eyed funk kid Watch the fire climb in your head I gotta move I need to move Makes you burn inside Can you quench my fire Each one of us An undying thirst inside I need to move I need to move Beautiful ways Creation made All the people dance in space I can hear The echoes of a thousand years Beaming in my night You sprinkle into my dawn a little bit of your hysteria Can you feel it Underneath your feet Circus thunder and the people meet That is why we move I need to move Inconspicuous voyeurs Parade your skin The world is watching Your lovers and your friends No private theatre No splendid dance Whores are we the people Looking for the cheap romance We need to move, I need to move
Boomshuga Women fill the alley way Air so humid their clothes stick tight They came to hear the music play That’s the most delicious site I’ve seen tonight Tingles form in your spine Bodies sway together drunk from the smell of sunshine And the beat starts in your hips The night rings in sounds of delight Boomshuga, Boomshuga Burn the fires bright The animals are reaching in They’re pulling us out tonight Hello my demon mind I almost forgot your name Ringing out so true Our bodies ache to work that way And the dancers and their thighs my thoughts turn to her sunshine And the beat starts in your hips Arms raise to the sky Chorus Women fill the alley way Air so humid their clothes stick tight They came to hear the music play That’s the most delicious site I’ve seen tonight Tingles form in your spine Bodies sway together drunk from the smell of sunshine And the beat starts in your hips The night rings in sounds of delight Chorus Boomshuga , Boomshuga Burn the fires bright The animals are reaching in Neither black nor white
Broken Window Fell out of bed, Early this morning Something hit me when I hit the ground Heard a voice inside of my head It said Hey, Boy! Don’t turn around Staring out life’s broken old window Getting lost in this fog and rain I know there’s got to be something .Something that’ll numb this pain Called my Dad on the twelfth of March .And I, Told him how I missed his smile He asked me when I’d meet a nice girl Settle down, maybe, for a while That night, I took Gina for dinner The waiters knew me, they knew my songs Used to watch me down on 9th street Hey Man! It’s been much too long Drove home, picked up my guitar Felt like I haven’t played in years Stayed up all night, singing songs about girls Some brought laughter, others brought tears Thought about love, and the flowers surrounding Seems to me, love blooms, then dies Note enough water, Maybe it was too much Sun is shining in this cloudy sky

Railroad Railroad I hear your running Running back down my tracks Hoping to seek my deliverance underneath the maple saps Ghosts line the railroad ties As the coal burns, the beast comes alive Oh momma I hold my hands to heaven “Deliver me Oh Lord! I cried.”
Chambermaids gossip in the corridor light Wood creaks and rattles The wheels put forth all their might Lives intermingle for the love battles The cemetery whispers as we roll by Railroad bring me home tonight Talk to thy neighbor, but my neighbor never hears me Railroad bring me home tonight Oh momma I hold my hands to heaven “Deliver me Oh Lord! I cried.” Railroad bring me home tonight Talk to thy neighbor, neighbor never seems to hear me Railroad bring me home tonight
Fury The wind is howling, It’s about midnight .I think its time to go I can see the bombs exploding right outside my window I am falling, My arms flailing I drop to my knees As you laugh in my face while I beg for mercy But, the only thing you will hear is silence Time is out the world is burning Shine on; Get back up: We are rising Oh I will live so free The white horse jumped across the breadth of my glance My hairs stand at attention waiting to relax again I am breathing, I hope you can see the fury inside me I want to live in a world where I can be free Oh yes we are running Oh yes we are running Shhhhh! Dogs are barking, Chickens gather The wolves are ready for their share You’ve done this all your life You’ll get what you deserve In the end, You can scream, You can dance Better do it before it ends The other side has come calling Calling out to you now friend All you want now is Mercy Time is out the people are learning Shine on; get back up, we are rising Oh we will live so free Oh yes we are running Oh yes we are rising.

War When I was born, my country was at war. Grew up, went to school, just to learn some more. One day a man came knocking on my door. Put down your books son, the army needs you more. There is, There is, War! And I'm just not sure what we're fighting for! There is, There is, War! And I'm still not sure what we're fighting for! Mother looked at him, a tear ran from her eye. Why must you take away these boys with you to die? Ma'am, your son will be a hero one day, Or he'll come home in a box, the trumpets they will play. There is, There is, War! And I'm just not sure what we're fighting for! There is, There is, War! And I'm still not sure what we're fighting for! Is it greed, or is it hate? That's got us stumbling around in this fate. It's time to end this war, lay down your guns. Let's try to live, live as one. There is, There is, War! And I'm just not sure what we're fighting for! There is, There is, War! And I'm still not sure what we're fighting for!
Snapshot of the 21st Century Gold & Silver, traders of the pink pearl Don’t mind the crying, tears dry due to sulfur air Her hills on fire all do to you and me It is a snapshot of the twenty-first Century Oh hear it coming, don’t try to quiet me Silence it can be so deadly It is the snapshot of the twenty-first century The shot on her thigh hasn’t even hardened yet While we devour each other and all the land we can Stroke it lick it, bring it front to back again Snapshot likeness, look in the mirror my friends Chorus Oh how quiet the night air is As it pulls at the sides of the lips, I form a sly grin Murder, madness, chaos, & greed Generals of this troubled century Oh hear it coming Beatings and Savagery Too many people are still going hungry It’s the snapshot of the twenty-first Century A river of red flows so freely Its not your God and don’t try to blame me Gold and Silver, traders of the pink pearl Snapshots for the whole world to see Oh hear it coming, don’t try to quiet me Silence it can be so deadly It is the snapshot of the twenty-first Century It is the snapshot of the twenty-first Century
