HISTORY OF THE DEBUTANTE PROJECT

In the spring of 1953, the Service Committee of Upsilon Omega Chapter, Alpha KappaAlpha Sorority, Incorporated®, met to discuss ways in which the sorority could best serve families of the Richmond community. The committee agreed to establish a fund to provide shoes for school children not attending school due to a lack of shoes.

In the fall of 1953, the Chapter adopted the “Cinderella Contest” as the fund-raising project in order to provide shoes on a regular basis. The participant bringing in the highest amount of money was crowned “Miss Cinderella,” at the first “Cinderella Ball” held in the spring of 1954. The contest was a tremendous success and provided many enriching experiences for the high school girls from all areas of the city who participated.

Through the years, the format of the “Cinderella Contest” gradually changed, and in the mid-seventies Upsilon Omega adopted theAKA Debutante Project. Its purpose is to provide enriching experiences for girls who are high school juniors and seniors and to contribute to theAKA Shoe Bank fund. The annual Debutante Ball is the culminating activity for the project.

Upsilon Omega Chapter established the “AKAShoe Bank Fund” in September 1954 in an attempt to preserve and financially support its commitment to needy children of the Richmond Public Schools. Today, this fund continues to meet the needs of thousands of children in the city of Richmond, as well as in the neighboring counties.

In 1986, Upsilon Omega Chapter established a policy that a portion of the proceeds from the AKADebutante Project, in addition to providing funds to purchase shoes, would also be used to provide financial assistance in recognition of academic achievement.

MRS. BERNICE JETER YOUNG

THE AKA SHOE BANK

We honor the memory of Mrs. Bernice Jeter Young, the chapter member who, in her capacity as chairman of the Social Services Committee of Upsilon Omega Chapter, presented the idea for the AKA Shoe Bank. At that time, Mrs. Young was employed as a School Social Worker for Richmond Public Schools. As a result of her investigations, she was aware that many of the student absences from school were due to the lack of properly fitting shoes to wear. Upsilon Omega Chapter accepted the idea, and the AKA Shoe Bank was established in 1954.

Subsequently, the chapter adopted the Cinderella Contest as a means to fund the Shoe Bank. As the AKA Debutante Project history reveals, it was in the mid-1970s that the Cinderella Contest was renamed the AKA Debutante Project with the same purpose, to raise money to fund the AKA Shoe Bank. Although there are many other agencies that provide free shoes for children in the city, the AKA Shoe Bank continues to meet the needs of area children who need properly fitting shoes to attend school regularly.

Dear Sorors of the Upsilon Omega Chapter,

Congratulations on the 68th annual AKA Debutante Project and Annual Debutante Ball! Over the six decades that you have sponsored this community event, you have reached hundreds of young women and men in the Richmond, Virginia area.

Following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, chapter members, debutantes, their supporters and community partners have raised funds for scholarships and the shoe bank, which benefits families in need. I am certain the workshops, community service activities and relationship building events have built the confidence of the debutantes, while simultaneously elevating their personal and professional leadership development skills. Additionally, the dollars contributed to support these talented young women further enables them to continue their dreams of furthering their studies and studying to become our nation’s next trailblazers in industries from medicine and business to education and entrepreneurship.

I commend Upsilon Omega Chapter and your leadership for the hard work in planning and executing a successful AKA Debutante Project and Annual Debutante Ball. The service you provide in the Richmond community showcases your commitment to carrying out the sorority’s program initiatives. As part of the 2022-2026 international program theme, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood, your chapter’s work showcased the power of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in the Marvelous Mid-Atlantic Region.

We wish future success for all debutante participants and escorts Again, congratulations!

Sincerely,

UPSILON OMEGA CHAPTER UPSILON OMEGA CHAPTER

Greetings 2022 Debutantes, Escorts, and Parents,

My memories of sparkling lights, white dresses, and smiling faces had almost faded. Oh, how I missed attending the Debutante Ball during the 2020 and 2021 years due to the COVID pandemic. When the Upsilon Omega Debutante Team announced the reinstatement of the Debutante Project for 2022, I was ecstatic. The theme, "Timeless Reflections of Pink and Green," and the culminating activity in the grand ballroom at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, on the evening of Saturday, December 10th, 2022, was a moment I was anticipating. Twenty-six young ladies' dreams of wearing white gowns and dancing with their fathers and escorts will finally come true.

The signature Debutante Project, presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Richmond Chapter of Upsilon Omega, will be an elegant evening with pink and green flares. Thank you for your presence and support for the 2022 debutantes during this meaningful and memorable event. Thank you to the Debutante Committee, chaired by Andrea Coleman, for coordinating such a vast project to inspire young ladies and gentlemen to strive toward success and achievement. The Debutante Team worked diligently to manage this project, and without their wholehearted support and dedication, the programming and events would not have been successful. The young ladies fulfilled commitments and raised money to assist with scholarships and shoes for children facing a crisis. With immense admiration and affection, I wholeheartedly thank their parents and guardians for their unwavering support of our dear Debutante Project.

Debutantes, as you move toward adulthood, I know you will bring much joy and happiness to others, contribute to the community, and seek out the best for yourself. I hope your evening is a magical experience, and when you share your memories of being a 2022 Debutante, let your smile tell your story.

God bless you in your future endeavors, and always reflect upon this night as an unforgettable pink and green experience.

Warmly,

7

Congratulations to the Debutantes, Parents, and Grandparents! What an amazing 2022 Debutante Project it has been!

Andrea D. Coleman

In June of 2022, twenty-six beautiful young ladies and their families committed themselves to participating in the 2022 Debutante Project produced by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Upsilon Omega Chapter! Each debutante brought and shared her unique gifts, innovative perspectives, and compassionate ideas. It is evident that the young ladies will have a great impact on the future of our communities, our culture, and even our nation.

It has been my pleasure and honor to chair the 2022 Debutante Project. The debutantes were always eager and excited to participate in the workshops and activities. Their willingness to learn and offer their perspectives regarding the need for change in our community was quite amazing. During many workshops, the presenters were amazed at the responses, awareness, and level of maturity demonstrated by our debutantes. Their ability to show care, concern, and commitment for important causes at such a young age is remarkable and refreshing. As each of our debutantes moves on to college, the workforce and other professions, we are proud to know that they are doing so with the love and support of a village. Parents, grandparents, other family members, teachers, and community advocates have invested their time and talents to enrich the lives of our debutantes, and their commitment to them shows through.

Our chapter members are thankful to have had the opportunity to share some of our knowledge, skills, and abilities with our future leaders. They are our future teachers, scientist, medical professionals, spiritual leaders, mothers, lawyers, politicians, technologists and more.

To the lovely debutantes, we, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® pledge our support for your future endeavors and whatever adventurous and positive paths you choose to take or create. Know that your journey is not written in stone. There is no specific script that you must follow. Remember to always use your resources, gifts, and talents as you make decisions and choose where to leave your footprints. Be bold, fearless, and unafraid to sow into whatever you want to see grow. We can’t wait to see all of your gifts unfold. Enjoy the journey, and remember to stop and take in a snap shot of all of your experiences while on the ride. We are proud of all of you, and we can’t wait to see your future shine big, bright and beautiful.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents for allowing these young ladies to participate and for the time, support, and resources that you invested in their participation in the 2022 Debutante Project. Each young lady will forever have these beautiful memories to cherish. Thank you to the families, friends and community supporters who provided ads and patronized the debutante project. Because of you, the young ladies raised funds that will benefit their community by providing shoes for students who are in need and scholarships for students who endeavor to attend college.

Best regards,

[Untitled: A Poem About Children]

Your children are not yours.

They are sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you, but not from you.

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love, but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, But seek not to make them like you.

127
~The Prophet Khalil Gibran (1883-1931)

(translation)

Which is most important?

The beginning or the end?

To hear and to have the power to do must be followed by OBEDIENCE.

The ENEMY is in you, if it is telling you to disobey what the Lord told you to do.

A Beautiful Flower

It was a cold January day when she arrived into our lives. A little early, but she could not wait to grace us with her presence. She was a precious little soul that was showered with love from day one, Greatly anticipated by her parents, brothers ,and a village of family and loved ones.

Through the years we have marveled at this special little girlSo sweet, talented, and full of life!

It has been such a joy to see her grow and thrive. Beauty, brains, and so much more!

Today we are so proud of her accomplishments and ambitious goals. She is just getting started, and we can’t wait to see her take the world by storm.

Her future is so bright that she is shining like a star!

Morgan has grown into a poised young lady, and she is like a “Beautiful Flower” with her arms outstretched, Taking in the rays from the sun and destined to be Blessed. So happy to celebrate her today and praying that God will make all of her dreams come true!!

With love, Sherl Moses *

AKA Silver Star & Life Member CONGRATULATIONS, MORGAN M. TARRER 268

Our Morgan

On January third of two thousand six, The most beautiful little girl was born into our family mix. She had the prettiest big eyes you’d ever want to see. And needless to say, we were as happy as could be.

From that day forward, we have all been so amazed. We fell in love with her and that love has lasted all of these days. During all of her childhood she has been such a joy. Actually, sometimes we think she’s our little toy. Now that she’s all grown up to be a fine young lady. Making us proud and elated.

It’s hard to believe that she will soon graduate And start a whole new life, and boy she can’t wait.

But no matter whatever or wherever she is, We’ll be right there bringing on the cheers.

We congratulate her in all her endeavors, And want her to know that we love her forever.

Lots of Love, Aunt Sophie, Uncle Al, Sharon and Aaron
