Debutante Ball Memories and Pictures

History Of TheDebutanteProject

In the spring of 1953, the Service Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Upsilon Omega Chapter met to discuss ways in which the sorority could best serve families of the Richmond community. The committee agreed to establish a fund to provide shoes for school children not attending school due to a lack of shoes.

In the fall of 1953, the Chapter adopted the “Cinderella Contest” as the fundraising project in order to provide shoes on a regular basis. The participant bringing in the highest amount of money was crowned “Miss Cinderella,” at the first “Cinderella Ball” held in the spring of 1954. The contest was a tremendous success and provided many enriching experiences for the high school girls from all areas of the city who participated.

Through the years, the format of the “Cinderella Contest” gradually changed, and in the mid-seventies Upsilon Omega adopted the AKA Debutante Project. Its purpose is to provide enriching experiences for girls who are high school juniors and seniors and to contribute to the AKA Shoe Bank fund. The annual Debutante Ball is the culminating activity for the project.

Upsilon Omega Chapter established the “AKA Shoe Bank Fund” in September 1954 in an attempt to preserve and financially support its commitment to needy children of the Richmond Public Schools. Today, this fund continues to meet the needs of thousands of children in the city of Richmond, as well as in the neighboring counties.

In 1986, Upsilon Omega Chapter established a policy that a portion of the proceeds from the AKA Debutante Project, in addition to providing funds to purchase shoes, would also be used to provide financial assistance in recognition of academic achievement.

Mrs. Bernice Jeter Young

THE AKA SHOE BANK

We honor the memory of Mrs. Bernice Jeter Young, the chapter member who, in her capacity as chairman of the Social Services Committee of Upsilon Omega Chapter, presented the idea for the AKA Shoe Bank. At that time, Mrs. Young was employed as a School Social Worker for Richmond Public Schools. As a result of her investigations, she was aware that many of the student absences from school were due to the lack of properly fitting shoes to wear. Upsilon Omega Chapter accepted the idea, and the AKA Shoe Bank was established in 1954.

Subsequently, the chapter adopted the Cinderella Contest as a means to fund the Shoe Bank. As the AKA Debutante Project history reveals, it was in the mid-1970s that the Cinderella Contest was renamed the AKA Debutante Project with the same purpose, to raise money to fund the AKA Shoe Bank. Although there are many other agencies that provide free shoes for children in the city, the AKA Shoe Bank continues to meet the needs of area children who need properly fitting shoes to attend school regularly.

Aliah,

To an amazing daughter, sister, and friend. To the one that made me a mommy. I love you so much. We have grown up and learned so much together. You are an amazing sister to your siblings and I thank you for that. As we celebrate this journey of a girl who’s grown into an elegant and graceful woman, I wish you nothing but the best. I know you will succeed in everything you put your mind to as you always have. You have not always made the best choices but you also have the ability to learn from your mistakes. Throughout your schooling, you have maintained straight A’s, been accepted into honors societies and specialty centers, and been inducted as Secretary in 2 HOSA Chapters. You make me so proud, and I am proud to call you my daughter. Congratulations on your big day! Myself, Elijah, Averie, and Kai love you so much.

To our Granddaughter,

Wherever your journey in life may take you, always be brave and strong. Believe deep in your heart that you are smart and capable of achieving anything your heart desires. Whenever your crown gets heavy, remember whose granddaughter you are.

Aliah, as I sit down to write this, I find myself reflecting on the beauty and complexity of growing older. Watching you navigate this journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Every year, you grow not just in age, but in wisdom, strength, and grace. There’s a quiet power in stepping into each new chapter of life. As a young woman, you are learning to embrace change, to find comfort in uncertainty, and to understand that time, though fleeting, is one of the greatest gifts we have. It allows us to grow, to love, to make mistakes, and to try again. Growing older is often accompanied by a deepening sense of self. It’s in the moments of self-discovery, both joyful and painful, that you begin to truly know who you are. You’ve already shown a remarkable ability to learn from life’s lessons, to keep your heart open, and to stay true to your dreams. Don’t fear the passing of time; instead, let it remind you to live fully. Celebrate the milestones and the quiet momentsalike.Cherishtherelationshipsthatenrichyoursoul, anddon’t hesitate to let go of what no longer serves you. Trust in your ability to face challenges with courage and to celebrate your successes with humility.Astheyearsunfold,Ihopeyoucontinuetofindbeautyinthewomanyouarebecoming. Sheisstrong, compassionate, resilient, and full of life. Neverforget that aging is not a loss of youth, but a blossoming into your fullest self.

With all my love and admiration, Solomon
