WHERE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE

We caught up with the cast of Sleeping Beauty ahead of their arrival in December.

Woking’s festive season is set to sparkle, having launched the New Victoria Theatre’s enchanting pantomime, Sleeping Beauty. Back in September we took the cast of stage and screen favourites to De Vere Horsley Estate for an official launch in the stunning chapel!

Leading the cast is panto legend Christopher Biggins, who returns to Woking as the Spirit of Dreams. Biggins expressed his joy at stepping back onto the stage: ‘The best part of panto for me is always the audience –their laughter, excitement and sheer joy. You can feel the wonder and curiosity, and there’s nothing like it.’ he said.

Joining him is Faye Tozer, of Steps fame, who plays the wicked Carabosse. For Faye, it’s the camaraderie that makes pantomime special:

‘The cast becomes a family, supporting each other through the run, and getting through the winter months together.’ Faye is planning to fill her dressing room with decorations and photos to make it feel like home during the

panto season. Richard Cadell, beloved for his work with Sooty, plays the lovable Muddles. Richard recalled his early years in showbiz as a child actor before combining his love of magic with the stage: ‘It takes determination, practice, and time to become a great magician and performer. But the joy of panto is the children’s laughter.’ Richard explained.

This year’s cast also includes Rhiane Drummond as Princess Aurora, Will Richardson as the Prince, Brenda Longman as the Queen, and James Paterson as the King. Together, they’re set to create a magical panto, brimming with festive spirit.

We were joined at Horsely Estate by Gordon and Ann Parris MBE, founders of the Children with Special Needs Foundation. Each year they attend our launch event to present a donation that will allow children with special needs and their families to attend the opening performance of our pantomime.

BACK IN THE SADDLE

Vicky Edwards talks to the award-winning author, Sir Michael Morpurgo as the National Theatre’s War Horse begins a new gallop around the country.

Marking 110 years since the start of the First World War, the new tour also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the book’s publication. Selling over 35 million copies worldwide, the backstory of Sir Michael’s literary thoroughbred is every bit as captivating.

As a child in London, Michael’s family were friends with Eric, an elderly veteran of World War I. Although very smart, he had terrible burns on his face, missing fingers and only one eye and one ear. As a grown man, Michael apologised for staring at him when he was a child. Eric said: ‘I remember. And I liked it. What I never liked was when people looked the other way.’

In 1976, he and his wife Clare set up Farms for City Children, a charity enabling children from disadvantaged communities to experience the adventure of working together on farms. One evening, Michael spotted a young boy by the stables. Although usually non-verbal, he was seemingly talking to a horse – and the horse was listening.

In the local pub, Michael met Wilf Ellis who had served in WWI when he was seventeen. Wilf told Michael, ‘All we had was fear – some went silent, some screamed, and some went mad. What we couldn’t do was talk to each other about it.’ But Wilf told his horse things that he couldn’t tell anyone else. He said: ‘And that horse listened’.

As many horses as men were killed during WWI, and this inspired Michael to create War Horse, using the animal as a neutral observer of the universal suffering of war.

Twenty-three years after its publication, Tom Morris at the National Theatre approached Michael. Morris wanted to stage a play with an animal puppet at its heart and believed that War Horse could be the perfect story.

After watching footage of South Africa’s groundbreaking Handspring Puppet Company, Michael said, ‘This extraordinary giraffe puppet was walking across the studio floor. I found that I was crying. It was so moving and done so well. I thought if they can do this with a giraffe, they can do it with a horse’.

One of the most life-affirming plays you will ever see, and engaging audiences of all ages, War Horse is the most successful play in the history of the National Theatre winning over 25 major awards and thrilling 8.3 million people worldwide – to date.

War Horse is at New Victoria Theatre, Woking, from Tue 14 – Sat 25 Jan.
