DR RANJ SINGH & JULIET!
Dr Ranj Singh, the popular TV doc talks to us about how it feels to be making his stage debut in the wonderful show, & Juliet.

For people who think they know Romeo and Juliet, how does the show shake things up? Romeo and Juliet is iconic, and everyone knows the tragic ending. & Juliet flips the script by asking: What if Juliet didn’t die? What if she could rewrite her story? This twist offers a fresh, female-empowering, and diverse take on the classic. It’s lively, fun, and a fantastic reimagining.
Who is Lance and what’s his role in the story? Lance is Francois’ dad, a former French army man who wants his son to follow in his footsteps. Francois, however, has different plans and wants to explore the world in his own way. Their relationship is about negotiating these differences. Lance is an upbeat character who’s rekindling an old romance.

beautifully diverse cast and inclusive themes. It’s important for audiences to see themselves represented on-stage, making them feel safe and celebrated. & Juliet is all about joy, and I’m proud to be part of it.
Are you a fan of the pop music featured in it? Yes! The show is full of well-loved pop songs, based on the music of Max Martin, who wrote hits for Britney, Backstreet Boys, Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson. The nostalgia of these songs adds to the fun.
Are you nervous about your musical theatre debut? Absolutely. It’s a big deal for me, and something I’ve worked hard to achieve. It’s a major shift from my usual work, and I know I have a lot to prove. I’m feeling the pressure but love the challenge. I’m both nervous and excited!
We know from Strictly, All Star Musicals, and your West End show Scrubs & Sparkles that you can dance and sing. How are you preparing for the acting aspect? I’ve done some theatre and panto, but I’m taking this role very seriously. I want my acting to do the role justice, so I’ve been taking extra classes with an acting coach. The long rehearsal process has been invaluable, and I’m learning a lot from my amazing co-stars.
It’s a very inclusive musical. Was that part of the attraction for you as an LGBTQ advocate? Absolutely. I see inclusion and diversity as strengths. This show embodies that with a
You trained as a clinician. Was getting into show business a happy accident? I never expected to go into media or theatre after university. As a kid, I was creative and loved music and art, but it didn’t seem like a realistic career prospect. I pursued academics and science but now feel I’ve earned the chance to explore my creative side. I want to show that you don’t have to fit into one box – you can do it all.
Looking back on your time on Strictly, what’s your takeaway? My dance partner Janette Manrara taught me to give 110% and adjust later if needed. Strictly was intense, balancing hospital work and the show, but it showed me I could do more than I thought possible. It also helped me discover the therapeutic power of music and movement, which I’ve continued for my mental health.
The tour calls at Sunderland Empire. Does it have any significance for you? I haven’t been to Sunderland before, so I’m excited to explore. I enjoy finding good restaurants and meeting people at the stage door. There’s nothing better than seeing the audience enjoy the show and getting to say ‘hi’ afterwards.

Available for the first hour of opening on a range of our delicious cocktails. Venue opens up to two hours ahead of showtime. Offer excludes matinées and early shows.

FE-FI-FO-FUN!
We catch up with Matthew Wolfenden about his starring role in our upcoming panto, Jack and the Beanstalk.
What was your first experience of Panto? Every year we used to go to the Bradford Alhambra to see the panto – I remember when I was about five, seeing Bonnie Langford as Peter Pan flying through the air and just being amazed. I think that’s when I first discovered my love of theatre.
Have you performed in Panto before?

No, I haven’t. I suppose the closest would be a production that I was in at The Old Vic with Sir Ian McKellen playing a Dame. It had a panto quality but without the audience interaction.
Will you be getting any tips from your former Emmerdale colleague Charlie Hardwick who starred in Beauty and the Beast in 2023? She did! I saw her in it. I might give her a call.
You’ve recently starred as Buddy in Elf The Musical, what is it about performing on-stage that you enjoy? I started my acting career in musical theatre. I trained as a gymnast from the age of four and trained with the British squad until an accident put paid to my ambitions when I was 17. I then went to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and trained as a dancer, before working in the West End for five years. Wanting to work in musical theatre again is the reason I left Emmerdale after 18 years.
What are you hoping to bring to the classic role of Jack? Well, my character in Emmerdale was a bit comedic and silly so I hope to bring a bit of David to Jack but I’ll also get a chance to sing and dance so he’ll be upbeat and fun.
What’s the best part of this show for you? I’m really looking forward to the audience participation and a bit of ‘he’s behind you!’ The kids can shout out and have fun joining in. It also brings out the kid in adults, it’s great.
You seem to play nice guys; do you ever want to play a baddie?
Ah, well I’m actually just about to film the part of a baddie for a television series, so watch this space…
Do you have any pre-show superstitions? I do! I always touch the wood on the scenery that’s backstage. I’ve done this before every performance since I was 19.
What are you most looking forward to about being in the North East this festive season?
I absolutely love the North East and I got to know the Sunderland Empire when I was in Saturday Night Fever. I’ve got some mates in the area and one of my friends who’s a teacher has just moved back, so I’m hoping he might bring his class to the show!
Why should people come and see Jack and the Beanstalk this Christmas? It’s a classic! Such a brilliant panto – I saw it last year in Bradford and the Sunderland Empire is such a fantastic venue for panto. It’s a beautiful theatre with a massive space and an electric atmosphere – you can’t help but have a fun time in that theatre.
Finally, if you could climb a magical beanstalk in real life what would you like to find at the top of it? A red Ferrari! A really nice shiny one!
Matthew Wolfenden is set to bring a GIANT helping of magic to this year’s pantomime spectacular!
Best known for his role as David Metcalfe in Emmerdale, Matthew also won Dancing on Ice and most recently played Buddy in Elf The Musical.
Back by popular demand are Wearside favourites, North East Queen of Comedy Miss Rory and the hilarious Tom Whalley.
Join us for a fabulous, reimagined romp through a classic tale you thought you knew… with amazing 3D effects!
