We spoke to Conor Kerrigan about Rambert’s Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby and what it’s like to play the infamous Arthur Shelby.
Describe Rambert’s Peaky Blinders in 3 words. Magnetic, menacing and rooted.
You’re originally from Newcastle. Are you looking forward to performing at Sunderland Empire? Wey aye pet, I’m gannin yem! I’m so excited and proud to be touring with Rambert’s Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby and representing the North East. I performed at the Empire when I was part of Reavely Theatre School as a bairn so it’s surreal to be returning as a professional working dancer. I’m excited for audiences to experience a show they’ll never forget.
What makes this production different to other dance shows? It’s an ambitious and unique show. It’s a big risk to take a national treasure like Peaky Blinders and interpret it into theatre dance, but a lot of great minds went into the creation, so it won’t disappoint. It’s raw, gritty and unpredictable. Even if audiences think they know what’s going to happen, it will still fill you with surprises along the way. We don’t shy away from embodying the show so fans, and those who love going to the theatre, will feel right at home watching this immersive production.
Why will Peaky Blinders fans enjoy this production? Steven Knight, the writer of the TV show, and Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer worked closely with us to get the story and timeline in order. You will recognise characters and iconic moments as well as new takes, illusions, and top-quality dance by powerful performers.
What do you enjoy most about playing Arthur Shelby? It took a lot to sit and create this role, but I was inspired by Paul Anderson’s physicality and look, so I shaped and experimented with that style. It’s rare in dance to be able to be truly intimidating. I believe my northern grit lends itself to this, and shouting ‘Roooooiiiiigghhhtttt’ into the audience is always pretty satisfying.
Finally, why should people come and see Rambert’s Peaky Blinders? Screen entertainment can only go so far. This work will showcase the importance of live theatre, sparking a fire within the audiences because of the raw, real performances. I’d recommend people be open-minded. Our aim as a company is to inspire, to show that dance is not all about tutus and pointe shoes. Come support us and raise the northern spirit!
Tue 29 Oct – Sat 2 Nov
Spectacular dramatisation and breathtaking dance is heightened by a live on-stage band performing specially commissioned music by Roman GianArthur and iconic Peaky tracks. Throughout Rambert’s packed-out UK theatre tour, long-time fans of the TV show and audiences coming to Peaky fresh were united in their enthusiasm for this adaptation written by the series’ creator Steven Knight with direction and choreography by Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer Ages 15+
