AY UP ME DUCKS –JONATHAN WILKES CELEBRATES 20

YEARS OF PANTO!

Jonathan Wilkes, Stoke-onTrent’s very own panto king, reflects on his 20th anniversary of appearing in pantomime.

From the lovable Buttons, to the mischievous Smee, and the courageous Robin Hood –Jonathan Wilkes has played them all and has been putting smiles on the faces of Regent Theatre audiences for 20 years. But what keeps him coming back year after year?

‘I always say this, but Stoke-on-Trent audiences are the best audiences in the world’ says Jonathan. ‘Every time I walk out onto that stage it feels like a huge warm hug. The love we receive as a cast is like no other and it is my absolute privilege to provide some magic each Christmas to the people of my home city.’

He believes in the power of theatre, particularly pantomime, to create a magical experience for audiences. ‘Theatre is magic. It provides an opportunity to leave all your problems at the door and get lost in a world of princesses, pirates, giants and fairytales. And it’s our responsibility as actors to make audiences believe in that magic. Pantomime is often the first time a young child comes into the theatre. I think it’s my job to become their best mate. If a child can walk away from the theatre saying that they loved the show, then that’s the next generation of theatregoers; it’s keeping theatre alive!’

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 2008/09

Dick Whittington 2024/25

But it’s not just the audiences that make the Regent Theatre pantomime such a special experience for him – it’s the team behind the scenes as well.

‘The Regent Theatre is a special place – it’s my second home. We’re just one big family. From the tech team to the front of house staff, to the marketing department and the theatre management – everyone works so hard to bring the best experience possible to the people of this city. I love it so much and I’m so grateful to be welcomed back for my 20th anniversary. It’s going to be a special one!’

As Jonathan celebrates this milestone, he remains as enthusiastic as ever. His commitment to bringing festive joy to Stoke-on-Trent audiences hasn’t waned, and with his 20th anniversary at the Regent Theatre set to be a memorable one, it’s clear that his passion for pantomime and the people of his hometown is as strong as ever.

HEAR HER ROAR!

We catch up with actress Gerardine Sacdalan to find out how she’s shaking up Shakespeare’s classic character Juliet.

For people who think they know Romeo & Juliet, how does the show shake things up? It gives a familiar story a more modern, very clever twist. By asking ‘What if Juliet didn’t kill herself?’ it rewrites her life and gives her an opportunity to explore the world without Romeo.

How would you describe Juliet, as depicted in the show? She’s fiery, super sassy and opinionated without knowing where to direct those traits. I see a heightened version of myself in Juliet. She can be super silly and faces every problem head on. Jack Danson, who plays Romeo, is great because he gives me a lot of things to play off. She wears the trousers and stands up for herself, which is something I admire and something that I think young people could learn from.

Do you see Juliet as a contemporary role model? Absolutely. She’s a heroine for young people in the audience and a heroine for me as well. She finds herself while navigating life and I can relate to that. She’s a little bit like a guardian angel for me really.

What makes Max Martin’s music so special? It spans several generations, so there’s something for everyone. I’m a massive Ariana Grande fan and her collaborations with Max are always my favourite tracks on her albums.

This is your first professional role. That must be exciting. It’s beyond exciting. It’s exceeded my expectations. Even the audition process was great. It was so much fun – the team was lovely and so warm – there was no additional pressure on top of the usual nerves. It’s a brilliant show and the songs are just fantastic.

What do you especially enjoy about performing in musical theatre? It’s such a beautiful form of expression. Whenever I don’t have the words to express my thoughts and feelings, musicals and plays do it for me.

What are you looking forward to about taking & Juliet around the country? Seeing how our version of the show develops as well as seeing lots of new places. I’ve only been to my hometown Cambridge and to London, which is where I went to drama school, so going on tour will be fun.

& Juliet

Currently breaking box office records on Broadway and following a phenomenal award-winning run in London’s West End, & Juliet is taking the country by storm and is heading to Stoke-on-Trent.

Fabulously fresh and riotously funny, & Juliet will have audiences roaring for more!

From the writer of multi award-winning Schitt’s Creek, Juliet’s new story explodes into life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including Britney Spears’ …Baby One More Time, Katy Perry’s Roar, Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling, Backstreet Boys’ Everybody and many more – all from pop music’s no.1 hitmaker Max Martin

Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as Juliet ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love – her way. This hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told.
