DOUBLE INDEMNITY: HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO?

How director Oscar Toeman brings film noir to life on-stage.

Double Indemnity is a classic novel and acclaimed film noir. What drew you to direct this piece for the stage?

When Double Indemnity landed in my inbox, I was intrigued. I love the novel and the film, and the play remains a brilliant moral thriller – taut, psychologically intense, driven by the fatalistic momentum of a Greek tragedy.

Tom Holloway’s adaptation roots the piece in a world that feels close to us now, which sharpens the tension further. And he brilliantly uses the fact we’re all in the same room, together, to enhance the storytelling – with Walter treating the audience like we’re his conscience. It’s immediate, unsettling and gripping.

As a director, how do you balance staying true to the source while bringing your own vision?

James M. Cain’s depression-era story is instantly compelling, but adaptation requires reinvention. While Tom’s version explores how the story speaks to us now, my role is to find a visual and emotional language that speaks to today’s audiences, whilst holding onto the essence of Cain’s world. It’s about preserving the tautness, irony and fatalism, whilst expressing them through a contemporary stage grammar, getting under the skin of the story to tell it in a way that only theatre can.

Mischa Barton plays the iconic Phyllis Nirdlinger. What makes her right for the role?

Mischa has a fascinating mix of warmth and unknowability. These qualities felt perfect for Phyllis. Her intelligence, stillness and instinct for emotional truth will allow her to create a three dimensional Phyllis – grounding the character’s seductiveness and danger in someone ordinary and recognisably human.

What makes Double Indemnity resonate today?

Double Indemnity captures the moral corrosion that occurs when ordinary people are trapped in a system that insist there’s only one acceptable path. Written during the Great Depression, it reflects the economic anxiety of that time, and the curdling of the American Dream. Walter is just a middle-class insurance salesman whose crime grows from desperation and opportunity. The notion that anyone might cross that line feels as true now as then.

We live within a culture shaped by capitalism, where status and security come at a price.

Walter and Phyllis’ scheme reflects the sense that the system is rigged and the only way to get ahead is to cheat.

What can audiences expect?

Audiences can expect a production that’s seductive, stylish and charged with danger. Instead of watching from a safe distance, they’ll feel complicit as the story’s heartbeat quickens. And, beneath the surface lies a question that’s both human and unsettling: if no one was watching, how far would you go to get what you want?

Double Indemnity

Hollywood icon Mischa Barton (The O.C.) makes her UK stage debut as the ultimate femme fatale in Double Indemnity, the story that inspired Billy Wilder’s film noir classic.

Los Angeles, 1930s. Amidst the wreckage of the Great Depression, insurance salesman Walter Huff prides himself on spotting scams. But when he meets the dangerously seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger (Barton) to discuss her husband’s policy, desire and deception intertwine. Together they plot the perfect murder –but passion clouds judgement, and guilt corrodes even the most perfect of plans.

Adapted by Tom Holloway and directed by Oscar Toeman, Double Indemnity is a thrilling tale of lust, greed and betrayal. Ages 12+

A gripping new adaptation of one of the greatest crime novels of the 20th century.

EXPLORING LOVE, LOSS AND THE JOURNEY HOME

A powerful new stage adaptation brings The Beekeeper of Aleppo to life.

In 2000, Edward Said, wrote ‘Our age is the age of the refugee, the displaced person, mass immigration.’ Said’s words have proven strikingly true. Never before in human history have there been more refugees and forcibly displaced people. According to UNHCR, there are 37 million and 123 million, respectively. The conflict in Syria alone has produced over six million refugees and another seven million internally displaced. Although the war has officially ended, its story remains unfinished.

Christy Lefteri’s beautiful novel, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, follows Nuri and Afra’s journey from their home in war-torn Aleppo to England. More than a work of literary craft, it engages with a fundamental aspect of the modern human condition. As playwrights, we feel deeply the honour, privilege and responsibility of bringing this story to the stage.

We began adapting the play in March 2020, after early discussions with Christy in 2019. Written largely on Zoom between London and California, the collaboration spanned time zones and continents. Our lived experiences and identities are rooted in Syria, England, Cyprus and the United States, yet we share a belief in theatre’s power to create social change. Through this adaptation, we’ve sought to explore loss, displacement, and the human cost of border policies.

The novel and play begin in southern England, so there is no suspense about whether Nuri and Afra arrive. Instead, the drama asks how war, displacement, and migration reshape their marriage and mental health.

We do not see this as the Syrian refugee story –there are countless others. Refugees have been reduced, politicised, and used to serve various agendas, from xenophobic to well-meaning. Stories like this must navigate between opposing clichés: the refugee as either threat or victim.

As scholar Emine Fişek reminds us, theatre must avoid crossing the line between progressive storytelling and spectacle.

Live theatre offers a powerful lens through which to understand off-stage experiences –building empathy, challenging stereotypes, and humanising statistics. By bringing stories like The Beekeeper of Aleppo to the stage, we hope to invite audiences into shared humanity and the possibility of healing.

As told by Nesrin Alrefaai and Matthew Spangler, Playwrights, The Beekeeper of Aleppo.

Nuri a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo – until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape and must journey to find each other again.

Winner of the Aspen Words Award, runner up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and one of The Times top three best-selling books of 2020, Christy Lefteri’s best-selling novel is adapted by Nesrin Alrefaai, and Matthew Spangler who adapted The Kite Runner. The production, produced in association with UK Productions, had its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse and has received rave reviews wherever it has played. Ages 13+

Don José sacrifices everything for love to be with Carmen. When Carmen becomes infatuated with Escamillo she loses interest in Don José, whose love quickly turns to violent jealousy.

Carlos Acosta presents his adaptation of Georges Bizet and Prosper Mérimée’s story. In his version, the story’s universal and timeless themes are laid bare in a sparse and powerful setting.

FROM POP PRINCESS TO MURDEROUS MENACE

Kym Marsh brings complexity, charisma and danger to the UK tour of Single White Female.

Audiences will soon see the darker side of Kym Marsh as she takes on the iconic role of Hedy in the world-premiere stage adaptation of captivating thriller, Single White Female.

The drama unfolds when recently divorced mum Allie advertises for a lodger to help her make ends meet. Enter Hedy – sweet and trustworthy on the surface, but with secrets that threaten to turn friendship into obsession.

Kym, who played one of Coronation Street’s most popular characters, Michelle Connor for 13 years, has won a multitude of acting awards and has also starred in Waterloo Road, Strictly Come Dancing and presented BBC One’s Morning Live. So how does someone so warmhearted and likeable transform into such a sinister character?

‘I think I’m entering my villainous period – and I love it,’ Kym admits with a mischievous laugh.

‘It’s easy to play a typical moustache-twiddling baddie, but I want Hedy to be layered. I want people unsure if she’s good or bad right up to the end, maybe even feeling sorry for her.’

Kym’s connection to this project runs deep.

‘After I played Alex Forrest in the stage version of Fatal Attraction, we started talking about other possibilities and came up with Single White Female. It had never been done before, and the character is so interesting and challenging.’

This new version, adapted by author and broadcaster Rebecca Reid, updates the story for a modern world, dominated by social media. It’s a landscape that was beyond our wildest

imaginations in 1992 when the original film left cinema audiences on the edge of their seats.

Kym says, ‘In this new interpretation, we see how people can imitate lives online, and that fits perfectly with Hedy’s character. When you put social media in her hands, it adds another layer of danger.’

Fans of the film needn’t worry – while it’s set in a contemporary UK, the essence of the film is still there. ‘The big moments are all there, in fact it’s a real thriller. As for the iconic stiletto scene, you’ll have to wait and see!’

Touring theatre is something Kym relishes.

‘There’s nothing like the buzz of being on-stage. I love that instant audience reaction. Every town responds differently, and that keeps it fresh.’

Kym will celebrate her 50th birthday on the final night of the tour, ‘I’m not sure what we’ll do after the show, but I know it’ll be a celebration!’

From the producer of The Girl on the Train, Single White Female promises a suspense-filled night – with Kym Marsh at her most magnetic.

Sharing a flat can be murder_

Single White Female

The world premiere of the gripping new psychological stage thriller inspired by the hit novel and iconic 90s film.

Starring Kym Marsh (Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, Abigail’s Party) and actress and presenter Lisa Faulkner (Holby City, Murder In Suburbia and John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen), Single White Female is a bold reimagining of the hit movie that coined a phrase and led a generation to fear a stiletto heel!

Allie, a single mum launching her tech business, advertises for a flatmate – and Hedy seems perfect. But as their lives intertwine, secrets surface and identities blur with dangerous and unimaginable consequences.

Full of dark humour and stiletto-sharp suspense, this new adaptation, written by author, journalist and broadcaster Rebecca Reid, updates the story to the age of social media, in a tale of ambition and obsession.
