Accessibility

We are proud to open our doors to everybody and make theatre accessible to all. Look out for these symbols throughout this brochure: Audio Described – Live verbal commentary is given through headsets to assist patrons who are visually impaired. The description doesn’t change the performance for any guests, but fills in the gaps for those who require it.

BSL Interpreted – Trained British Sign

Language signers stand to one side of the stage and interpret the script used by the performers at the same time as the actions are being performed.

Relaxed – Offer a range of adaptions to both the theatre environment and the production itself. These may include reduced sound levels, removal of certain special effects and allow free movement in and out of the auditorium.

Touch Tour – Touch tour events offer immersive, sensory experiences tailored for blind and visually impaired audiences. These tours provide tactile exploration of stage sets, costumes and props before a performance, enhancing accessibility and connection to the show.

MobileConnect – The MobileConnect system amplifies the performance via your mobile phone or tablet. Audience members connected to the app will hear a live feed of the on-stage performance (with audio description, if attending an Audio Described performance), wherever they are sat in the auditorium. THE PARTY ISN’T OVER

Tracy-Ann Oberman reveals how a bold reimagining of Present Laughter brings fresh glamour to Noël Coward’s beloved classic.

There is a beautifully preserved myth surrounding Noël Coward. For many, he inhabits a world of silk dressing gowns, perfectly enunciated vowels and silver cigarette cases.

Present Laughter has always been one of my favourite plays. But when I looked more closely, I saw something beyond the sparkling comedy: a portrait of the cost of celebrity. At its heart is a fragile ego trapped inside a gilded cage, desperately trying to outrun time and the fear of becoming irrelevant.

In Coward’s original 1939 play, Garry Essendine is an ageing stage idol whose chaotic personal life is carefully managed by those around him. But the moment I flipped the gender, the story took on a fascinating new dimension.

Enter Geri Essendine – who has been thirty-nine for rather longer than she cares to admit.

I was drawn to the idea of a middle-aged actress behaving every bit as outrageously as her male counterparts. I thought of Mae West, Joan Collins, Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli: glamorous, talented and unapologetically powerful.

But where to place her? The answer came in the shape of New York, circa 1977, at the height of Studio 54. It was a world of glamour, excess and celebrity, where charismatic women commanded the spotlight and belonging to ‘the in crowd’ was everything.

What if Geri were an expatriate British actress who had conquered Broadway alongside her ex-husband, secretary and producers? They have built an empire together. But when the

handsome Johannes arrives, the delicate balance that binds them all begins to unravel.

Setting Present Laughter beneath the mirrored disco ball shines a fresh light on themes that feel strikingly contemporary. In an industry that has often judged women more harshly than men, ageing and relevance are about far more than vanity. For performers whose lives have been shaped by applause and attention, the prospect of losing the spotlight can feel overwhelming.

Yet beneath the Studio 54 glamour, Present Laughter remains exactly what it has always been: a dazzling comedy about love, vanity, friendship and the strange business of being adored.

Because for Geri and her gang, the party is never just a party.

The Brown Suite

Step into The Brown Suite, a bold, funk-fuelled production that pulses with rhythm, style and soul. An unmissable dance theatre experience set to the sound of James Brown, Etta James and Sam Cooke.

Set in the vibrant world of 1970s New York nightlife, audiences are transported into a community where music is more than entertainment. It is a force that brings people together, shapes identities and creates spaces of belonging.

Against the backdrop of a vibrant soul-era community, seven enigmatic lives collide in a story of desire, heartbreak and longing. As life’s intensity builds, the dance floor becomes a place of celebration and healing. Friendships are tested, passions ignite, and fragile bonds are pushed to their limits.

With its infectious energy, rich storytelling and soundtrack drawn from some of the greatest voices in soul music, The Brown Suite explores the universal desire to connect, belong and feel.

FRIENDSHIP, POWER AND BETRAYAL

Playwright Robert Khan on the real-life relationships behind The Gang of Three and why this political story still resonates today.

What makes this story relevant and attractive right now? Because it’s not about the 1970s. It’s about three political friends who agreed on everything and still broke each other’s hearts.

We open with Andy Burnham having entered Number 10 unopposed, but a party closing ranks behind one leader doesn’t mean rivalries have vanished. Labour is arguing all over again about what it stands for - and the real dramas tend to happen in private. These days, though, they’re played out in WhatsApp groups rather than smoke-filled rooms.

Does the union/government struggle shape the narrative? The unions and economic crisis are always there in the background. The country feels ungovernable – inflation, strikes, the IMF at the door – and that pressure raises the stakes on every private conversation.

Do you see the pressures of the 1970s reflected today? The 1970s rhyme with now – inflation, unrest, a mood of decline. History repeats itself just enough to make us uncomfortable.

What surprised you most about the three men? How funny and human they were. You expect monuments and find three men in carpet slippers: Healey’s ferocity, Crosland’s glamour, Jenkins’s loneliness.

What surprised me most was the tenderness, yet the competitiveness that never disappeared. Did you meet anyone while researching the play? We spoke to people who knew all three. We spent a happy morning with Bill Rodgers, and Lord Owen generously gave notes after a performance – two members of the original Gang of Four helping shape a play called The Gang of Three.

Was there a eureka moment in the writing process? Realising that the most dramatic thing they ever did was stay in the same room. Three friends, all on the verge of betraying one another, and none willing to say it aloud.

If you could have dinner with one of them, who would it be? Healey, easily. He’d quiz you on Yeats, play the piano, and demolish your politics in a single sentence.

Were the betrayals driven by self-interest or political passion? These men genuinely believed they could save the country – and believing that is its own form of vanity.

What do you think each of them would object to in the play, and what would they recognise as true? Jenkins would object to the vowels, Crosland to the suggestion he squandered his gifts, and Healey to being remembered as the bruiser. But I hope all three would recognise the friendship.

What do you hope audiences leave feeling?

Moved – and reminded that the people who lost the arguments often shaped the country as much as those who won them.

The Gang of Three

Roy Jenkins, Denis Healey and Tony Crosland battle for the soul of the Labour Party in this five-star smash-hit political drama.

In the heat of economic crisis, the Labour Party’s Roy Jenkins, Denis Healey and Tony Crosland clash over the soul of British socialism. Sharp, witty and gripping, the play captures towering intellects, fierce rivalries and the private tensions behind public power.

Following a sell out smash hit run in London, Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky’s five-star, electrifying political drama returns for a national tour this autumn, revisiting the high-stakes battle for the Labour Party’s future.

Smart, provocative and fiercely entertaining – this is political theatre at its most compelling.

Agatha Christie’s The Hollow

Renowned detective Hercule Poirot expected a quiet break in the country; instead he’s drawn into one of the most unsettling cases of his career.

At The Hollow, an elegant country estate, a glamorous circle of guests gather together one summer evening. But beneath the sunlit charm, something darker coils. Old passions refuse to die. New rivalries ignite. Dangerous infatuations take hold. Then – a shot rings out.

A body is discovered. A smoking revolver in an unsteady hand. The scene appears almost staged; a shockingly straightforward crime... it is anything but.

Starring Peter Polycarpou (Birds of a Feather; Evita; The Brutalist) as the ever-meticulous Belgian sleuth, The Hollow reunites Fiery Angel with director Lucy Bailey following the sell out tours of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Don’t miss this darkly seductive new staging of one of Agatha Christie’s most compelling mysteries in Richmond this autumn. Ages 12+

GET READY FOR THE ORIGINAL ROM-COM

Isobel McArthur explains why Pride & Prejudice is the ideal production for modern times.

A few years ago, Andy Arnold, the Artistic Director of Glasgow’s Tron Theatre wanted to host a re-staged classic in his summer mainstage slot. At the same time, on the other side of town, I had just read Pride & Prejudice for the first time, at age 28.

Shortly after, The Tron commissioned me to write the script. Some adaptations of Austen may have made her stories seem starchy –but she’s a riot! Pride & Prejudice is one of the original romantic comedies. It’s full of witty, incisive satire about the utter ridiculousness of being human. Rom-com marries with so much of what we wanted to achieve with the production. It also supports my preferred theatrical language in a way which is linked to the traditions of Glasgow’s music hall: with live singing and instrumentation, personality-led performances, and tonnes of gags.

The script went through many painful iterations but the biggest problem to be solved was about Austen being smug, lofty and too posh. There is a sense that her stories are about the lives of plummy-voiced Dukes in drawing rooms. So, it was clear to me that a story from a historical period so defined by divisions of class and status needed to be told by servants.

All five servants are female and there are artistic reasons why an all-female cast was perfect. Pride & Prejudice is about the plight of five daughters whose future hangs in the balance as a direct result of their gender. Without marrying, they will be destitute. Such was the lot of any woman without a man to legally represent her

in Regency England. Pride & Prejudice is also set during the Napoleonic Wars, meaning a disproportionate amount of household servants at the time were women.

Equally, Austen was unable to publish under her own name during her lifetime because of her gender. Elizabeth Bennet is the main character, but everyone goes on about Colin Firth. These things speak for themselves.

We also dig into questions about enduring love – is there such a thing as ‘the one’? Can you love someone else, flaws and all, before you’ve acknowledged your own shortcomings? And why do so many of us believe that having a partner is so essential to living a life fulfilled?

In Austen, everyone’s looking for the next party, so we’ve tried to make something fundamentally celebratory with this show and we invite you to join us at our party. Get yourself a drink, enjoy the music and hopefully you’ll fall head over heels, as we have, with this gorgeous story.
