CELEBRATING 60 DIAMOND YEARS OF GLITTERING PANTO & MORE

This year The King’s Panto celebrates its 60th birthday, but pantomime has been part of Glasgow’s cultural history for much longer than that.

Since the first performance of A Wish For Jamie on our stage in December 1964, the city has changed dramatically over the years, but our annual pantomime remains a constant. Glasgow’s history with pantomime stretches back 136 years to The Forty Thieves, the very first one performed in the city, in 1888. The King’s has seen its fair share of famous faces on the boards, to name a few – Stanley Baxter, Gerard Kelly, Jack Milroy, Rikki Fulton, Gregor Fisher, Gavin Mitchell, Karen Dunbar and Jimmy Logan. Most recently, Elaine C Smith and Johnny Mac have lent their own festive magic, endless energy, wit and comic timing to cement The King’s Panto as one of the most enduring traditions of the Scottish stage. Star of stage and screen and current leading lady Elaine C Smith made her King’s Panto debut back in 1996 in Cinderella, while Johnny Mac joined the show in 2017’s Sleeping Beauty and has been a much loved staple ever since.

According to Theatre Director James Haworth, it’s just that family draw that keeps the regular festive occurrence so popular:

‘It really is for all the family and it’s a lovely time, you see the same faces on the same days year on year

because it’s a real tradition for so many. I don’t think people would ever let us stop the panto – not that we’d ever want to!’

In fact, demand is so high that this year we’ve added an extra week to the panto run, starting on Saturday 23rd November and running until Sunday 5th January.

Shining bright even 60 years on, The King’s Panto remains the diamond of The King’s stage.

This year’s Peter Pan is produced by Crossroads Pantomimes, the world’s biggest pantomime producer.
